‘I need an RDP house’ Living conditions make woman’s life impossible } Tladi Moloi EVELYN DLADLA (54) is chained to her bed in her rented shack in Extension 1, Bohlokong, Bethlehem. She cannot do anything for herself and is dependent on her daughter Modiehi (27) who had to leave school six years ago when she was in gr. 11 to look after her mother. Dladla broke her leg a few weeks ago after she had slipped near the door outside her shack when it was raining. “A few years ago I was hit by a speeding vehicle and now I broke the same leg that had been injured. After that my life became difficult. I was okay until I broke my leg again, but now I am depended on my child for everything,” she said. Even though Dladla has a wheelchair she cannot even go to the toilet outside because the condition of the area outside her shack makes it impossible. She has to use a bucket when nature calls and Modiehi has to remove and clean it. “I need an RDP house because it has a toilet inside. I have lost hope because I will never recover completely.” Dladla said she had applied for an RDP house a long time ago. “The first time I applied was in 1994. At the time we thought everything would be easy after the ANC came to power. I’ll still vote for the party though because they

Dladla said the ward councillor was aware of her living conditions and that the councillor had said they would attend to her situation. “I used to meet with her. When I reminded her of my request, she said she remembered me,” she added. Mamotshwane Mokoeng, the ward 7 councillor, said she was aware of the conditions under which Dladla was living. She said Dladla was on the waiting list, but that they did not have a site to build houses for the community. “I am very disappointed that she went to the paper. I am only following instructions. I cannot do what I want,” said Mokoeng.

Grab a book and read } Jabulani Dlamini DROP everything and read! This is what the Free State Education Department, in conjunction with the Express Group, wants you to do, at least for 30 minutes every day. The two organisations have embarked on a ground-breaking initiative to collect reading material. This includes books, magazines, et cetera. The books can be dropped off at any Volksblad or Department of Education office across the province. The initiative was launched at the Volksblad offices in Bloemfontein and was graced by a high-powered delegation from the Free State Department of Education as well senior managers at Volksblad. The book collection drive will culminate with the celebration of World Book Day on 23 April. “If we can get our children to read, and especially get parents to read to their children, I know we will be able to turn this country’s literacy levels around,” Tate Makgoe, Education MEC, says. Zandile Qwati, director of General Education and Training at the department, says the department has put in place measures to address the problem areas in the schooling system. “International and regional studies demonstrated that South African learners achieve below acceptable levels in reading and writing. “Low performance in annual national assessments (ANA) in First Additional Language in gr. 4 to gr. 6 and gr. 9 is a cause for concern given that English is used as the language of learning and teaching,” Qwati said.

Water project brings hope EDNA MOLEWA, the minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, in conjunction with the Free State government, will launch the Bethlehem and Paul Roux Bulk Water Project today at the Paul Roux Stadium. The launch is expected to start at 10:00 and the project promises to bring an end to the water problems in Paul Roux. The recently completed bulk water scheme is from the Saulspoort Water Treatment Works via the newly built Morelig Pump Station, a 17 km pipeline in a westerly direction to the new Meyerskop pressure break tank whereby water is fed under gravity through a 30 km pipeline along the N5 highway to Paul Roux. In Paul Roux a 48-hour reserve reservoir is also being built. As a result of the scheme Paul Roux and its settlement will no longer use ground water which was found to be high in manganese and iron and posed health risks to the inhabitants. The scheme will also allow future developments like flushing toilets. Fateng tse Ntsho is still using the bucket system. The bulk water scheme will further allow economic development projects in the area. The Department of Water Affairs (DWA) has provided support to the Dihlabeng Local Municipality (DLM) with regards to the implementation of the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) programme and the project is complete, operational and ready to be launched. The DWA is the custodian of water resources in the country guided by legislative mandates. The department also renders support to local government through its Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) and the purpose of the programme is to supplement the financing for the development of the regional bulk water infrastructure, water treatment works and waste treatment works.

Makhesini tackles ANC } Tladi Moloi
MANDISA MAKHESINI, the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) premier candidate for the Free State, criticised the ruling party for lowering standards in Qwaqwa. She said Qwaqwa had been a better place before 1994, with more schools and factories.
‘The parties are fight ing. They all want to rule the country and we pray for peace and fair elections.’ – Paulos Mohatlane
Makhesini spoke at the recent election prayer meeting which was held at the Robala Lodge in the industrial area in Qwaqwa. “Qwaqwa has produced many professionals, but that was before 1994. That has not happened under the leadership of the ANC, because they are all criminals. They have ruined the colleges and factories in Qwaqwa,” she said. Makhesini said the EFF would ensure that all factories were brought back after the elections and that they would give land to South Africans. “Kenneth Mopeli, the former chief minister of the South African bantustan of Qwaqwa, did it all for Qwaqwa. Proper roads and schools were built by him. “Look at the roads that were built under the ANC leadership.
They have potholes – all of them. Mopeli believed in quality, because there were no tenders then,” she said. The prayer meeting was organised by the Priesthood Forum. According to Paulos Mohatlane, the event was aimed at praying for peaceful elections on 7 May. He said the forthcoming elections would not be like those in the past. “The parties are fighting. They all want to rule the country and we pray for peace and fair elections,” he said. Mohatlane said they had invited all the parties to the event and added that he was happy with the turnout. “We believe the turnout would have been bigger if people knew beforehand that we had changed the venue. However, we are
happy that we have achieved our aim with the few people who attended,” he said. Even though the event was organised by the Priesthood Forum, it raised eyebrows that the programme director was an EFF member. To make matters worse Makhesini was the only party representative who had a chance to address those who had attended. ) Do you think the EFF will win the elections? Mokitlane back in ANC colours } Selloane Khalane WITH less than a month left before the 2014 National Elections, Caska Mokitlane, former Congress of the People (Cope) Free State leader, and his ally, Gertrude Mothupi, are now chanting ANC slogans. The same Mokitlane criticised Free State premier Ace Magashule’s State of the nation address on 26 February. He said Magashule’s speech was just elevating Pres. Jacob Zuma and attacking leaders from opposition parties. Hailed as the ANC’s prodigal son, Mokitlane has waltzed back to the ruling party after an apparent fallout with Cope leader Mosioua “Terror” Lekota. A former Free State ANC deputy chairperson and Education MEC, Mokitlane is one of the disgruntled ANC members who left the ANC to co-found Cope in 2009. Addressing a packed Mangaung Municipality Auditorium, where a handful of defectors were welcomed back into the ANC fold, Mokitlane said Cope was a dying party. “Its death is fast approaching. Cope is constructing a cult figure and no longer concerned with building the party,” Mokitlane explained.
The event was also attended by defectors from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) bussed to Bloemfontein from all over the Free State. Meanwhile, Mxolisi Dukwana, the former Free State ANC treasurer and Economic Development MEC, was also given an olive branch by the party’s deputy chairperson and Mangaung mayor, Thabo Manyoni. Dukwana was part of the ANC members who lead the party’s “regime change faction” that had wanted to topple the current chairperson Magashule. Consequently Dukwana’s contestation for Magashule’s position led to him being booted out of the Free State cabinet. Dukwana told Express he was now a “house husband” who played golf and tended his family. He denied rumours that he had defected to the EFF and said that he was an active member of the ANC at branch level. “I was never a disgruntled member of the ANC, but I was disappointed in the way matters were handled in the running towards the ANC provincial conference,” Dukwana explained. Mokitlane said the ANC would decide where to position him after the elections.

FS Stars still facing relegation } Tladi Moloi DESPITE losing 2-1 to SuperSport United last Wednesday at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa, Kinnah Phiri, the Free State Stars mentor, is still confident that his side will escape the relegation zone. Free State Stars are second last on the Absa Premier League table with 21 points in 25 games. They are just three points behind the PSL rookies of Polokwane City and seven points away from Golden Arrows who are rooted bottom of the log. Phiri was not happy with the performance of his boys on the day and said that they had given away cheap goals to their opponents. “They didn’t work hard to score the goals. We just gifted them three points and two goals. During the first goal we played many touches in our own half and lost the ball. However, the second goal was an own goal,” said Phiri. Even though he was not happy with the performance, he still hummed the same tune: “I think we’ll still catch up.” Judging by his face, the coach is not as confident as he was when the team still had about nine games to play and when he took over the coaching reigns from Themba Sithole who is now the
assistant coach. “We’ll survive. We must just continue to work hard until the last day,” he said. Ea Lla Koto are left with five games before the season ends. The home team should play like a team in need of success going into these remaining fixtures. It is now clear and evident that they will have to double their efforts in order to escape relegation. Free State Stars will have the home field advantage in their next three games, while two of their games will be away against Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows. They will welcome the University of Pretoria at the Charles Mopeli Stadium today. They will then play the high-flying MP Black Aces on 26 April at the Goble Park Stadium and wrap up their home games with the struggling Orlando Pirates on 6 May at 18:00 at the Charles Mopeli Stadium. They will play against Chiefs on 30 April at the FNB Stadium. The boys in red and white will end the season away playing Swallows on 10 May at the Dobsonville Stadium. If Stars finish 15th on the log table, they will battle their way back to the elite league against the three teams from the National First Division (NFD) that finished second, third and fourth.

Mathematically both teams can overtake the FET boys should they win all their remaining games and Maluti fails to get a point in all games. Roses can finish on 30 and Rovers 27 respectively. The boys in blue and white will welcome Milano United FC on Sunday at the Charles Mopeli Stadium. The game will not be easy for the home side as they face a team that is fighting for a place in the promotional play-offs. United are third on the table with 42 points after the same games played by Maluti. They are tightly marked by Jomo Cosmos and Baroka FC who are not giving them any room to breathe. The three teams have 42 points apiece with only goal difference separating them.

Mandaza’s skill beats Warriors } Tladi Moloi DAVID VILAKAZI has pointed out that experience “robbed” African Warriors of a win when they lost 3-1 to Maritzburg United in the quarterfinal of the Nedbank Cup at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday. He said his team had played well as their opponents had to work hard for their victory. “I am happy with the performance, but not the outcome. They scored from set pieces and we knew that would happen. I told my players not to give them a chance on the near poles, because they are very dangerous from that range.” Maihlome Ihlasele lost the game when it mattered most in the first half of extra time. The National First Division (NFD) outfit had produced world-class football to send the game into extra time as they managed to hold the high-flying United to a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes of the game. Warriors were eventually beaten by Terrance Mandaza who came from the bench to send his side to the semifinals of the tournament.
Pirates meeting held THE Bethlehem branch of Orlando Pirates will have its annual general meeting on 4 May. This will be held at Phekolong Park near the Thabo Thokoza Secondary School. The meeting is scheduled to start at 11:30. There will be a braai a day before the AGM at the clubhouse at Stella’s Tavern at R20 per plate.
“We were killed by Mandaza. I told my boys immediately when he was introduced that it is not going to be about pace, but that he is very strong on the ball. They lost concentration and he punished us.” Vilakazi has, however, admitted that their performance was extraordinary. “Remember, this was a televised game and every player wanted to show the world what he is capable of.” He said he would go back to the drawing board and advised the boys to keep performing through the last four games of the league. “I will be happy if we can win the remaining games, because that will surely better our position on the league table.” Warriors will travel to Cape Town to face Blackburn Rovers at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on 19 April. They will welcome Vasco Da Gama at the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium on 27 April and drive down to Durban to face Thanda Zulu Royals FC at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex on 4 May before wrapping up the season against Sivutsa Stars FC at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on 11 May.
