Supporters’ nerves wracked as Ea Lla Koto ward off relegation
} Tladi Moloi ADAM ABDUL-BASIT was a hero on Saturday when Free State Stars beat Moroka Swallows 3-0 to avoid dropping out of the Absa Premiership. Abdul-Basit and Lehlohonolo Thebekang saw the team run off the field with 3-0 as winners over Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium in their last league game of the season. Ea Lla Koto came into the encounter dying for a win while on the other side they had hoped SuperSport United would do them a favour by beating the stubborn Polokwane City who were two points ahead of them. The referee’s final whistle saw the Stars management, supporters and players celebrating like a team that had just won the league. But this time the team celebrated an escape from the relegation playoffs, also thanks to United beating City by 4-2. Stars knew that it would not be an easy fight in the relegation play-offs considering that no PSL team had managed to come back against the hungry boys from the National First Division. Abdul-Basit said he was happy to score two goals from the bench and most importantly the goals that saved the team. “We came to this game knowing that we had to fight for dear life. I told myself from the bench that I had to do something very big for the team and God helped me,” he said. Kinnah Phiri, the team head coach, said he was happy that they had managed to survive when it mattered the most. He added that they had to give glory to God who had helped them. “We started off badly, but those are things we should not talk about now. We just have to go back and prepare the team for the

Moeketsi Lebesa, a Stars supporter, has urged the management of the team to prepare the
team well for next season. He said they did not want to witness what had happened this season again. “We love this team and they should know that. They nearly broke our hearts. We even had various diseases that we never had
before including high blood pressure,” he said. Moleboheng Maboee, one of the Stars’ loyal supporters, said she believed that the team would survive. “I never lost hope. I am happy

Green, black and golden victory } Tladi Moloi PHUTHADITJHABA was painted green, gold and black on Thursday when about 5 000 or so members of the ANC celebrated their national and provincial elections victory. The ANC secured 69,85% of the 1 029 297 total votes cast in the Free State. In the second place is the DA with 23% or 164 672 of the votes and the EFF ended in third place with 8,15%. There were 1 449 448 registered voters in the Free State for the 2014 elections. When addressing the comrades, Vusi Tshabalala, the executive mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, said:
“I want to thank you all. I know it was difficult going to this election. I know that my people will always be loyal to the party.” Tshabalala says that they forget that the people are the ones who have entrusted them in their positions. “We are making a promise that the ANC was formed for the people. We are aware that people love the party. You should have hope. We will come back and correct the wrongs we did,” he says. Olly Mlamleli, MEC of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, was in attendance and she praised Moeketsi Lebesa, the president of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa
(DPSA) for his bravery. “That man is brave. We saw women kissing on television (referring to the Agang leader, Mamphela Ramphele, and the DP’s Helen Zille) the next day the marriage was over. But our marriage with the DPS will stay forever. We want to thank this leader,” she says. Mlamleli says the Free State premier, Ace Magashule, told her she should pass his gratitude to the people of Qwaqwa. “We are planning from today because we are used to this position. I know that people from Tsheseng could not make it here and I will come back to celebrate with them,” she promised. ) For pictures visit express-news.co.za.

BETHLEHEM is celebrating its 150th anniversary. This town was founded in 1864. The town in the Eastern Free State in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District started out very small, but it is now growing rapidly. With its tourist attraction unit of Clarens, the town has witnessed more tourists from across the world making it a destination. Tjhetane Mofokeng, the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, believes that Bethlehem has a rich history that needs to be documented. He says a team of researchers of the University of the Free State (UFS) is currently working on compiling the information. “We want our children to read about this town. We have a rich history,” he says. In making sure that this becomes a reality and enough information is gathered, the vibrant mayor has recently invited elders to the feast at the Baken Park Stadium.
The feast was aimed at bringing the elders together to share their stories. During the ceremony, the elders aged 60 years upward, were given a microphone and they shared their stories with those who attended the event. Mofokeng says they are quite aware that some might not tell their story completely accurately because of their age, but that this is where the researchers would come in to find out the truth behind the information. “I know that we have one of the books, but it focuses more on white people. We are happy about what others have written down and now we have to build on that. We have already given that book to them so that they can combine the information,” he says. Mofokeng says they will make sure that the book is available as soon as possible. “We are celebrating this year and I would love to see the book in our hands before the end of the year,” he says.

New laboratory a great asset THE South African National Parks (SANParks) recently handed over a science laboratory to the Setsoto Intermediate School in Qwaqwa. The school is one of the beneficiaries of SANParks’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives that aim to benefit those communities that live adjacent to the park and was chosen because of its proximity to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Addressing all invited guests at the launch, including the deputy director general of Education in the Free State, Fani Sithole, SANParks’s managing executive: Parks, Nomvuselelo Songelwa, said: “We as SANParks get excited each time we deliver a project such as this to the community. Our parks all over are doing well merely because of the people living closer to them and this is our way of giving back to those communities.” She spoke about SANParks’s involvement in the institutions of higher learning. “The relationship with the FET Colleges, especially the Qwaqwa Campus, has grown over time. We have now entered into an agreement to offer experiential learning at our Golden Gate Hotel for their Hospitality students, especially chefs who need practical skills. This is another way we are trying to live out our vision statement of Connecting to society.” Songelwa concluded her address by inviting all learners to consider careers in conservation and become part of SANParks in the future. “We have a lot of career opportunities that range from veterinary scientists to researchers that await all interested learners. “Although this school is not a high school, we hope that the learners that

Babalelo mothers spoiled at party BABALELO DAYCARE at New Horizon College held a Mother’s Day tea party for all their mothers and their little ones on Saturday. The mothers with their sons and daughters turned up fashionable in their traditional wear and the theme was enjoyed by everybody. On arrival, each child received a photo frame which was their gift to their mothers. Decorations for the frames were supplied by Babalelo Daycare and the mothers and children enjoyed decorating the frames together. The outcome was very special gifts for the mothers. Coffee, tea, juice and colourful cupcakes ended the day on a sweet note. The following poem is by an unknown author: A Mother’s Love There are times when only a Mother’s love Can understand our tears, Can soothe our disappoints And calm all our fears. There are times when only a Mother’s love Can share the joy we feel When something we’ve dreamed about Quite suddenly is real. There are times when only a Mother’s faith Can help us on life’s way And inspire in us the confidence We need from day to day. For a Mother’s heart and a Mother’s faith And a Mother’s steadfast love Were fashioned by the Angels And sent from God above

THE University of the Free State (UFS) has a mission to become one of the top research and teaching universities in South Africa and this is already paying dividends. Nthatisi Molefe is proof of this. This young aspiring researcher is currently at the Hokkaido University in Japan where she is undergoing intensive language training before she transfers to the Obihiro University to pursue her PhD studies in Veterinary Parasitology. Molefe, who is from Slovo Park-Katlehong in Qwaqwa, matriculated at the Mampoi Secondary School in 2007. “I am currently at the Hokkaido University until 22 September when I will be moving to Obihiro to begin my doctoral studies,” she said. When asked how it feels to be studying so far from home, she said it was great and more like an adventure, but admitted that she missed everyone at home. “Language is a problem here as no one speaks English. This includes university staff, doctors, nurses and shopkeepers. I happened to catch a flu and I almost lost my mind when I had to wait for an interpreter to finally make it to the doctor I was seeing. “However, the Japanese are very peaceful people. They are warm to each other and I have noticed that they use ‘I am sorry’ and ‘thank you’ quite frequently,” Molefe said.
The research for her Honours and Masters of Science degrees focused on the use of medicinal plants in treating parasitic round worms in animals and it was done with the help of the Seotlong Agricultural and Hotel School. “My research was on gastro-intestinal nematodes that is a widespread and important class of parasites in livestock. These pose a real threat as they cause productivity loss due to their ability to disrupt nutrient utilization of the livestock, thus leading to hunger and malnutrition,” she said. Molefe said what was of crucial importance from this research was that it confirmed an age-old usage of plant species like lengala, seletjane, koena and tsebe ya pela as a way of managing parasites by Basotho in the Qwaqwa area where she came from. “I have therefore found that our own indigenous plants are an important feature of modern scientific research. “This means the gap between science and our indigenous knowledge systems is being closed rapidly. “Our forebearers are knowledgeable and must therefore be afforded the respect they deserve, even in modern science. “I am determined to localise scientific research so that it benefits those around me. “I am also determined to learn Japanese and succeed,” she said.
Bogus officials commit crimes THE Phuthaditjhaba police warn the community to beware of people impersonating police officers, municipality workers or employees of government departments. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring says there have been three incidents in which people impersonated employees of government departments when committing a crime. The first incident took place at Mandela Park where three men identified themselves as social workers. A minor was stolen from her grandmother. “Also, during the weekend, six men broke into the house of business people at Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Two. They were wearing police uniforms and one was carrying a firearm. The suspects handcuffed the victim
and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. They were driving a white double-cab bakkie with no registration nimbers. A case of house robbery is being investigated.” The third incident occurred in Phuthaditjhaba. A business man alleges that he was in his shop when two men walked in pretending to be municipal electricians. They took cellphones, cigarettes and cash. A case of business robbery is being investigated. “No person should impersonate another – that is a crime. If you are not sure whether the person introducing himself to you is a police officer or works for the government, you have a right to demand an appointment certificate or work identity card.”

NHC celebrates 20 years NEW HORIZON COLLEGE (NHC) has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Erna Pelser, the NHC Secondary vice-principal, says a week of celebration proceeded with a fancy-dress occasion. She says on Thursday they paraded to the town hall and released 1 300 blue and yellow balloons. “Past. Kalimer opened with a prayer and blessed the school. Friday was a fun day. A company from Johannesburg brought inflatables. “All the learners enjoyed themselves thoroughly and indulged in a juicy watermelon feast. “Exhausted, everybody went home to gather energy for the following day. Saturday was the highlight of the week where a full programme was followed,” she says. Vernon and Margaret Botha
gave recognition for years of service to each staff member. Johnny and Verna-Mey Eyberg handed certificates to all the grounds staff. Mafu Solomon Rakometsi, the CEO of Umalusi, was one of the guest speakers. “During the mid-1990’s the Free State Department of Education was experiencing mediocrity in education, dysfunctional schools, low teacher morale, sporadic class attendance by teachers and learners and poor matric results. It took a visionary leader beyond the horizon to establish this bastion of education in the Eastern Free State – Vernon Botha,” said Rakometsi. Rakometsi singled out the academic achievements of New Horizon College and regards it as one of the best-performing schools in the country. He said his hands were itching to sign
the matric certificates at the end of the year. Botha indicated that he and his wife had completed the race successfully after 46 years in education. Neo Losaba, a former student, is studying music at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He inherited his beautiful voice from his belated father, Simon Losaba, who was also the school’s former principal. His songs reminded everyone of what it would sound like in heaven. The school’s mass choir practised very hard and the outcome was of a standard hard to be met by anyone. A car draw took place at 12:00. The lucky winner was Rachel Molete from Qwaqwa. Busi Tshabalala, the Department of Education district director of Thabo Mofutsanyana, also acknowledged that Botha

Mohapi back on air } Tladi Moloi AS the saying goes: You can’t keep a good man down. Phalli Mohapi has reunited with the Qwaqwa community radio station. Mohapi has been recalled to beef up the radio team after he was sacked in March 2009. He was on the list of presenters who were taken off the air after the management acted against renewing their contracts. The Turfontein, Qwaqwa-based presenter joined Qwaqwa Radio in March 2004 as a sports presenter. With his golden voice, he helped the station to attract about an 80 000 strong listenership. He said it was a good feeling to go back to work after he had spent 392 days without a job. “I never thought I would be back at the radio one day, but God knows everything. He is the answer to all our problems,” Mohapi said. Mohapi said he was happy with the warm welcome that he had received from the management, presenters and the board of directors. “I received a warm welcome from all of them and I am happy with that. I just need to focus and do my job. I am not new on the air waves. I am sure it would not take me long to get to the level where I was before.” Mohapi will be on air from Monday to Friday in the 13:00 to 15:00 show with Reja Lekomo and on Tuesday from 21:00 to 00:00 with Kgekge ya melatswaneng. His voice will also be heard on radio on Sunday from 15:00 to 18:00

Eagles face Bubchu } Tladi Moloi THE championship race is on for the Safa Second Division side the Super Eagles. The high-flying Eagles will be hoping to continue their fine form when they welcome Bubchu United FC in the league clash this afternoon at the Bohlokong Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00. The Bethlehem-based team come into this encounter with their heads high after victories in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District derby that saw them beating Moving Spurs FC from Qwaqwa by 4-2 in a game at the Makwane Stadium on Saturday. Bubchu were also in action on Saturday and were held to a 2-2 draw by the Shamrocks Flowers on their home turf at the Clive Solomon Stadium. Both Bubchu and Eagles know how important this game is if they are to keep their title hopes alive. The two teams are in the top four of the league. Eagles are sitting top of the table with 53 points in 23 games while Bunchu are sitting
fourth with 47 points in 23 games. Sibanye Golden Stars and Bloemfontein Young Tigers, who are sitting second and third respectively, are looking at the Eagles with hawk eyes, hoping for negative results in their favour. Surely the owner of the team, Strike Mabasa, would love to see his side qualify for the promotional play-offs with only seven games to go. Mabasa was selling the team when the season had started, but later decided to keep it after he had not agreed on terms with a few people who showed interest in buying the team. The team is no stranger to sitting top of the league. They did the same last season, dropping when it mattered the most. However, this season they are the hot favourites to become the champions and represent the Free State in the national play-offs.
