Birthday party held in Thlolong for Samuel Molefe (116) } Tladi Moloi KESTELL. – Samuel Molefe, who hails from Thlolong, Kestell, recently turned 116 years old. On Saturday, Vusi Tshabalala of the office of the executive mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality (MAP), visited Molefe to celebrate his belated birthday with him. Molefe was born on 24 June 1898. The birthday party was attended by family members, relatives, neighbours and some of the employees of the local municipality, specifically from the mayor’s office. Molefe said he believes that no one in today’s generation would reach his years, because they were free to anything. He said his generation respected the elders and had always listened to what they were told not to do. “Alcohol is the biggest problem for our children. I never smoked or drank alcohol while growing up. We were told not to eat things like eggs, as well as some other things, and we did exactly that,” he said. When asked what his secret was to live for so many years, he said: “That I would not know. God is probably the one that can give the answer to that.” Molefe is the father of eight children, four men and four women. He is also the grandfather of 44 grandchildren. His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1993 and since then his children have been looking after him. The most interesting things about Molefe, who arguably could be the oldest man in the Free State, is that his first child was born in 1944 and mathematically it means he had his first child at the age of 46. What is more, he was 73 years old when his last-born child was born. Molefe said he had spent most of his life on the farm Winnelaagte near Afrikaskop. “I grew up on that farm. I went to school there and worked there for a long time,” he said. “The mayor has asked us to come here after he had been instructed by the premier, Ace Magashule. He said we should come here to give him (Molefe) this birthday cake and blankets,” said Masetjhaba Mosia-Lakaje, member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Women,

history there has been no one who has reached this milestone. “He said you have shared some historical moments with him and he was happy about that.”

Church invites people } Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – There is a new church in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. This church is situated at 5591, Phase 7 in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. It is called the Fire Army Restoration Ministries (Farm). According to Pastor Nkosinathi Ndwandwe, the church was launched in November last year. He said it was aimed at restoring people’s path to God. “We want people to connect with God and we are doing exactly that,” he said. He said the church has attracted about 40 to 50 people since its inception and added that they would love to invite more people to the church. The church service is on Sundays from 10:00 to 13:00, followed by the one on Tuesday from 18:00 to 19:00. Bible talk is on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 19:00.

BETHLEHEM. – Clem Harrington, the MMC for Local Economic Development at the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, has offered a helping hand to the Mlotshwa family by donating a wheelchair. Harrington handed over the wheelchair to Pascalina Mlotshwa (59) on Thursday. Even though it was handed over to her, it belongs to her son, Jim Mokhathini (38). Pascalina said Jim had had a wheelchair before but that it had broke. She said she had asked Thoko Tshabalala, the MMC for Disability at the Dihlabeng Municipality, for a wheelchair but that she had been turned down. “I am happy with what Harrington has done for my son. I only asked for it last Tuesday and after two days he came with the wheelchair. I knew that he would help me. Some of our leaders are useless. They grow wings when they are in high positions,” she said. She said Jim had become paralysed in a car accident a few years ago when they had come from a soccer match. “He was a soccer player. One day they were driving home from a football game and they had an accident. He is my only son. I love him so much,” she said. Harrington said he was happy to help. He said Pascalina had asked him for a wheelchair for her son. “She works as a cleaner at our LED Office. One day I came to see them and she asked for a wheelchair. My office will always try to help the community members,” he said.

Ace wants youth to be part of project } Tladi Moloi

REITZ. – A total of 230 people, mainly youths, will be temporarily employed for the construction of the R26 road over 66 km between Reitz and Kestell. This road has become a nightmare for motorists driving between Reitz and Kestell. Even though the speed limit here is 120 km/h, motorists have to drive as slow as 10 km/h in order to avoid all the potholes here. This will, however, soon be a thing of the past. Ruwacon Construction has been appointed to fix the road and it is expected to be finished in the next 15 months. Ace Magashule, the premier of the Free State, and his team recently launched the project and he said it would cost R147 million. He said they had heard people complaining about the road and felt they had to come on board to fix it. “Part of the road is still intact, so we have made it very clear that the youth should work on the road. This is the aim of the National Development Plan. We want young people and women to work here. We want empowerment and the radical economical transformation of our economy. “Therefore, we have made a plea to companies here and those unemployed graduates who have studied Civil Engineering. This is their chance to gain experience,” he said. He said the youngsters should work there in order to gain experience. “If they can gain experience we can use them to maintain our roads in future. We have confidence in the companies that are going to complete this road. I am also happy that they are coming to our province,” he said. He said he would motivate that those who worked there should be from Reitz, Kestell and the surrounding farms. “But if we need people with certain expertise, we’ll outsource. The companies will know which skills are needed. I am a South African and believe in a unitary state of one government, one nation, one South Africa. After all, the Free State comes after the country. We are not federal. We are a unitary state and that is what we want to encourage. But we should prioritise,” he said. Magashule said it was time to work. He said infrastructure would continue to grow

he said. He said the rehabilitation of roads would also focus on work on the Rietpan Road in Qwaqwa and added that the work would start in 30 days. “The Vrede to Memel and Memel to Newcastle Road will be rehabilitated as well as the Zastron Access Road, the

Clocolan to Marquard Road, the Meadows Road in Bloemfontein and Reitz Street in Kroonstad.” He said the construction of the township roads, as part of their township revitalisation programme, was already in progress in all districts and that other projects would start within the next three months.

Woman overjoyed with new house } Tladi Moloi BLUEGUMBOSCH. – Mathekoana Ntleru (70), who hails from Bluegumbosch, Qwaqwa, could not hold back tears of joy when Ace Magashule, the Free State Premier, walked into her house during his visit to inspect newly constructed houses in Bluegumbosch. Ntleru’s house was demolished in April last year by the Free State Government. After the 3 400 houses had been demolished people stayed in shacks for a few months while the government was busy building new and better houses as part of Operation Hlasela. “I want to thank you. You have helped me. I did not have money to make the house bigger. I live with nine grandchildren and the house is small, but this one is better than the first which had only one room. Today is better than yesterday,” she said “You see, people like you give us courage when you come back to thank the government. We appreciate your support,” said Magashule. Magashule took a walk through Ntleru’s house and promised to buy her a mattress. “I would like to thank the ANC government. Life was difficult before with one bedroom, but now I am happy that the children have their own bedroom. Now I can have peace of mind,” she said. Magashule said they had about 3 400 houses to build in the province but could not say for sure when they would be finished.

“We have many houses in the province that need to be fixed. I was worried when they told me that there were still about 800 houses in Zamdela, Sasolburg, with one door. We are faced with many challenges. “We are also demolishing two-roomed houses. We have started in Tweespruit, Welkom, and now we’ll be going to Heilbron. “This shows that we still have a lot to do. We don’t have enough money, but we’ll keep going with the little that we have. We’ll keep going until 2019,” he said. He also explained what they meant by the 102 days project. “The ANC is 102 years old, so we decided that during these days we have to do things to show people they did not make a mistake by voting for the ANC. When asked why they had chosen to launch the 102 days project in Qwaqwa just after the election, the premier said that more than 80% of the people living in Qwaqwa had been loyal to the party since 1994. They gave the ANC 93% and more. They never doubted Qwaqwa, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu when it came to supporting the ANC, Magashule said. “They have been loyal and they have extra-ordinary patience. The people of Qwaqwa never go on strike. “They always come and speak to us. “Most of the people in the Free State have been good to the government and that is why we always try our level best to make them happy,” he said.

Teams invited to brewing challenge THE South African Breweries (SAB) is calling all university micro-brewery teams to participate in the seventh annual SAB Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge. The Intervarsity Challenge is a key element of the SAB’s promotion of beer as the natural choice for the moderate and responsible drinker. As a low-alcohol beverage, beer is created to be savoured which adds to the enjoyment of life for the overwhelming majority of consumers who drink it responsibly. The Intervarsity Challenge thus seeks to promote responsible consumption amongst students who chose to drink beer. In terms of the competition, products brewed under the following competition-sponsored categories will be eligible to enter: ) Carling Black Label Champion Lager; ) Redds Best Cider; ) Millers Genuine Draft Best Speciality Beer; ) Hansa Beeg Dreamer Best Label; and ) Castle Milk Stout Winter Warmer. The style for each of the competition categories, which determines the judges’ tasting guidelines, is set by the Beer Judge Certification Programme (BJCP). Most beer styles are not defined by a single beer and many styles are broad, encom-

passing multiple statistical variants. An additional award, the Castle Lager Best Bru, will be presented to the team with the overall best beer from any of the other categories. Each category carries prizemoney of between R10 000 and R25 000. Further to this, participating university teams have the opportunity to win entry into an academic brewing programme offered by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD). The IBD is a longstanding partner of the SAB Intervarsity Brewing Challenge and presents the overall winners of the competition with the Ben Lamaletie IBD Floating Trophy. Participating universities each have their own micro-breweries where students brew, ferment, condition and package their beers prior to the final stages of the competition when they are tasted by independent and accredited craft beer tasters. The SAB has helped fund, along with the South African Stainless Steel Development Association (SASSDA), the construction of micro-breweries at several leading universities across South Africa. These micro-breweries serve as valuable teaching aids for students involved in microbiology, chemical technology and engineer-

ing programmes. The SAB Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge was founded by former SAB senior trade brewer and pioneer brewing legend, Lamaletie. It was through his efforts that the SAB sponsored the first university micro-brewery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus in 2003. The SAB Prospecton Brewery in KwaZulu-Natal and University of KwaZulu-Natal challenged teams from six other universities with micro-breweries to take part in the first Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge. The competition has since spread to many other universities in South Africa, which took advantage of installing microbreweries as part of their scientific syllabus. While the concept of the intervarsity brewing challenge was started in 2003, the first official SAB Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge was initiated in 2006 as a means of encouraging responsible beer appreciation amongst students and to introduce prospective SAB employees to the business. In addition to this, the SAB uses the initiative to help create a beer culture in South Africa. For more information call Azure Janneker, SAB media and communication, on 079-505-6966.

Mayor resigns after long run } Tladi Moloi QWAQWA. – Dr Balekile Mzangwa, the executive mayor of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, has resigned. Mzangwa, who has led both the local municipality and district municipality, jumped ship last week and resigned as both the executive mayor and councillor of Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality in the Free State. Mzangwa was elected the executive mayor of the district municipality in 2011 following local government elections. He was previously the executive mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, for two consecutive terms from the advent of the new dispensation of local government in 2000 to 2011. According to Matefu Mokoena, the communications manager at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, Mzangwa will now assume a new role in the Department of Health in the Free State. Rumours doing the round were that Mzangwa was going to be the chief executive officer (CEO) of the new hospital in Ladybrand. But Express Eastern Free State has reliably heard that Mzangwa is going to be a head of department in the Department of Health in the Free State. The outgoing executive mayor has expressed his sincere gratitude to his party, the ANC, councillors, members of the mayoral committee, management and staff of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality, communities and local municipalities in the district for their support and guidance. “It is with gratitude and humbleness that I greatly appreciate the opportunities granted to me and the trust bestowed upon me by the ANC to be its servant at local government level for a period spanning almost two decades. “Having served the organisation in various capacities in the local government

BALEKILE MZANGWA, the executive mayor of the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Munici pality, has resigned. Photo: Supplied sphere – both at the district and local level, most particularly as a councillor and the executive mayor – has been an invaluable experience and a momentous period which I will forever cherish and hold dearly. “It has been a learning curve and a period of political maturity for me as I mellowed over the years through the guidance, advice, political lessons and support of the organisation and its political leadership,” said Mzangwa. He wished his successor and the municipality all the best and successes in a pursuit for excellence in the delivery of services for the people of Thabo Mofutsanyana.

Party wants MEC to be fired ROY JANKIELSOHN, the leader of the DA, said the Free State premier, Ace Magashule, should fire his MEC for Health, Dr Benny Malakoane, immediately. He said it was alleged that Malakoane had interfered with ICU admission procedures at the Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem. “He abused his power and privilege to force the hospital to make an ICU bed immediately available in order to admit an ANC connected individual. “There are only three ICU beds available at the Dihlabeng Hospital. “According to reports, other patients in need of intensive care were dropped from the list in order to make a bed available for Malakoane’s politically connected friend,” he said. Jankielsohn said this latest revelation of

gross misconduct was unacceptable. “Health facilities across the Free State are struggling to feed patients. “At some facilities medicine has run out leaving medical personnel unable to administer it. Various other hospitals cannot attend to those in need of surgery due to a lack of equipment and critical professional medical staff shortages,” he said. He said the DA in the Free State had repeatedly called on Magashule to fire Malakoane to no avail. “We have reported the provincial Department of Health and Malakoane to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) last week, requesting it to investigate Human Rights violations perpetuated against the people of the Free State,” he said.

QWAQWA. – The Southern African Association of Youth Clubs (SAAYC) is an organisation that works with young people in the Free State and operates from the Makeneng Tribal Offices next to the Makeneng Primary School. The SAAYC ended Youth Month with a youth festival. The centre hopes to not only educate but also to empower the youth to participate in the programmes available to them. They aspire to encourage the continual growth of the community on a daily basis. Youth Month serves as a poignant reminder of a powerful moment in

history, and this date should not only inspire the youth and South Africans, but the entire world. Abel Ndaba, the centre project coordinator, said they celebrated the day with the Department of Health (mobile clinic), MMC (medical male circumcision), Absa, Old Mutual, SOS Children’s Villages, local authorities, local artists, schools and other partners in youth development who came to present and exhibit their respective institutions through information desks (stalls), sharing information with the youth and the community.

Granny now safe in donated home } Nkareng Moloi QWAQWA. – Mathulo Hlalele (75) has spent many years living in a one-room shack in her home village of Ha-Rankopane. She says she has been a victim of house-breaking and sexual abuse. She added that she had never enjoyed her grant as thugs would break in and take it and some groceries before abusing her sexually. But this could be a thing of the past after the community members had built a three-room house with the materials donated by Buy and Build a hardware store. A donation came after some of the community members decided to help the granny by asking for donations from the hardware store. Lawrence Mokhele, a community member who led the campaign, said: “We decided to take action as this situation was affecting us. So I approached the store to build a house for Mme Mathulo. They generously agreed, but community members had to build the house themselves.”

Mokhele said they donated enough material to build a three-room house, with burglar bars for the door and windows. “We are really happy that our neighbour is safe now. A million thanks to the hardware store,” concluded Mokhele. Ismael Kathrada, the owner of the hardware store, said he was more than happy to help where he could. “This is the only way of appreciating the support we get from our customers. We are doing this to honour Madiba. We donated the house, kitchen unit, stove, kettle and groceries.” According to Kathrada the donation cost them R18 000. Hlalele couldn’t hide her excitement when asked how she felt about it. “I am very happy. I do not know how to thank the people of the store. I can say now I am safe and have a decent home,” she said.

New coach for FS Stars BETHLEHEM – Free State Stars have confirmed the appointment of the Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet. KickOff.com reported on Monday that the former Malawi national team head coach had already started his duties at the Free State club. Free State Stars general manager, Rantsi Mokoena, tells the club’s website that Saintfiet’s appointment is aimed at improving on last season, after the club came close to being relegated.

“Saintfiet is now our new head coach. The coach brings vast experience and his track record as a coach speaks volumes. “One hopes that he will add value to our technical team having worked with a number of African teams. “We are happy to have Saintfiet in our arsenal. We hope he will take the team to greater heights and help us improve on last season’s disappointing performance.”

Saintfiet will be assisted by the former club captain Duncan Lechesa, and André Bronkhorst has been roped in as goalkeeper coach – the same role he had played at neighbours Bloemfontein Celtic. Meanwhile, the former assistant coach, Themba Sithole, has been redeployed and will now be in charge of the development squads. He will be assisted by Edwin ‘The Great’ Mofokeng. – KickOff.com

Harmony Academy keeps title } Sidwell Guduka THE Harmony Academy have proven once again that they are the kings of soccer in the Free State by winning the u.17 Engen Knockout Challenge for a record ninth time on Sunday. The Virginia side overcame Royal Stars 2-0 in a fast-paced final played at Grey College’s Windmill Park in Bloemfontein. Their goals were scored by Teboho Mokoena and Morapedi Mpuru early in the first half and Stars failed to conjure up any meaningful threat thereafter, while Pitso Mokoena’s troops held on for the R10 000 first-prize money. The opening 30 minutes saw the Virginia side in complete control as they passed the ball around effortlessly and controlled the possession stakes. Stars had to work hard for the ball and looked to be chasing shadows in the first half.

It was no surprise when Harmony took the lead through Mokoena who netted from the spot after referee Mmathibe Tshosane had penalised a Stars defender who had handled the ball in the box. Mpuru put the final nail into Stars’s coffin a few minutes later to help his side retain their Engen u.17 Knockout Challenge title. They will join PE Sundowns in the Engen Champs of Champs in October. The second half was similar to the first stanza as Harmony dictated the terms once again, but they were unlucky not to have scored more goals. In the end, Harmony proved they were the kings of the Engen Knockout Challenge. The Harmony Academy coach, Pitso Mokoena, praised his boys for a good showing throughout the tournament. “I’m very happy for the boys. When we

left Virginia for Bloemfontein our objective was to defend our title and we did exactly that. I’m very proud of my boys. They gave it their all today,” said Mokoena after the match. “Stars made us sweat blood for our win. I think they played well, but they looked a bit nervous in the beginning of the game. It was the first time for them to feature in the Engen Knockout Challenge final,” he added. Mokoena said his side had been successful in this competition because they gave their opponents all the respect they deserved. “Our only secret for winning this tournament is that we respect all the teams we play against. We don’t underestimate our opponents on the field of play. As a coach I respect other coaches and I tell my players to always be hungry for success.

I always try to instill a winning mentality in them,” he said. On the other hand, Stars coach, David Sekhonyane, blamed their loss on a lack of concentration. “My boys lost concentration in a very crucial moment of the game. We conceded two goals in the opening 20 minutes and failed to recover. We are all disappointed to have lost to Harmony in the final. However, we have taken the positives of the match,” Sekhonyane said. This exciting tournament now makes its way to Durban on 11 and 13 July at the Engen Refinery Sports Complex in Wentworth where teams from across KwaZuluNatal will battle it out to be the regional winners and to stake their claim in possibly being crowned the ultimate Engen Champs of Champs. ) For more stories, visit www,expressnews.co.za.
