Father’s legacy kept alive Construction company wins two Govan Mbeki Awards

} Teboho Setena MOFEDI NKABINDE is overjoyed about their construction company having received two awards for the first time since the death of her father, Toko George Molefe, in 2005. The company scooped two awards, one for the best rural housing project and another for the best woman contract project, at the Free State Govan Mbeki Awards of the provincial Department of Human Settlement. The awards were presented at a ceremony last week Thursday in Welkom. Nkabinde is one of four daughters of the late Molefe, who was a well-known contractor in Qwaqwa, a former homeland situated in the Eastern Free State. A delighted Nkabinde dedicated the two awards to her father, who she said had been influential in her decision to become involved and to manage the company. “I’m very thankful. This is the first time the company has received award recognition since my father passed away in 2005. This is for my father. He would have been very proud to see that we are upholding his legacy. “I feel very blessed that we, as his family, are keeping his legacy alive in the construction industry. I wish he were alive to see what we are doing. I did not expect the company to receive recognition, especially two awards. It took me by surprise,” said Nkabinde. She said the company was run by the Molefe family full-time – by women only. Serving on the board are their mother, Winnie, and her four daughters, Sejo, Mothiba, Mpho and Mofedi Nkabinde. Nkabinde said the strides the company were making and their sustainability were due to the solid foundation the late Molefe had laid during his lifetime. “The company received recognition under his management. The two awards the company have received bring fond memories of his dedication and hard work in the construction industry,” said Nkabinde. Under their management the company has continued to make strides, by empowering women through transferring skills and creating employment opportunities.

I’m very thankful. This is the first time the company has re ceived award recog nition since my father passed away in 2005.

The awards were presented at a function held last Thursday in Welkom. Photo: Teboho Setena Nkabinde said the core of the 20 staff members employed full-time were women. “We employ 15 women and 5 men. Through sub-contracting we create job opportunities for about 130 people,” she said. The aim of the Govan Mbeki Awards is to showcase excellent work done by the department through empowering contractors with special emphasis on the department’s

programmes to promote best practice in the delivery of the core mandate sustainable Human Settlements and improved quality of household life. The awards also honour the struggle icon Govan Mbeki for his acclaimed contribution in the fight for decent housing and security of tenure. The awards also seek to acknowledge and motivate all role players in the

housing value chain that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making a reality of the Freedom Charter adage: There shall be housing, security and comfort. The awards are to be contested at both provincial and national level. ) More photos at www.expressnews.co.za.

DA worries about FS ROY JANKIELSOHN, leader of the DA in the Free State, laments the rising unemployment in the province. His grave concern stems from a survey by Statistics South Africa revealing a negative picture of a general household in the Free State. Jankielsohn raised his concerns recently during the Free State Government Departments’ budget vote debate in the Free State Provincial Legislature in Bloemfontein. The survey revealed that youth unemployment in the Free State was currently at 48,2%, the highest in the country. “The survey revealed that out of a population of 2,7 million people, only 514 000 cited salaries as a main source of income, while 477 000 cited social grants as the only source of income. “This means that roughly only 59,6% of Free State households are salaried, while 55,2% are either completely dependent on social assistance or depend on grants to supplement income,” he said. The current unemployment rate is at 40% (expanded definition). “This means that out of a total possible workforce population of 1,25 million, 496 000 people are unable to find jobs. The DA has a vision for a prosperous Free State. A Free State in which every person has an opportunity to reach his or her potential, depending on their own personal efforts to do so. This administration must adopt a ‘Free State First’ policy within the procurement process. “Local small businesses will benefit from this and it will create employment. We need to embrace entrepreneurs, assist where we can and allow small businesses to flourish,” said Jankielsohn. He challenged local municipalities to play their role in turning around the province’s socioeconomic situation. “Municipalities have a role to play in contributing to economic development.

“The Free State requires municipalities that provide basic services and understand local economic development, we need to improve our roads infrastructure, we need to provide a safe and secure environment and we need to provide skills for our labour force. An economic environment that levels the playing field of opportunities and encourages and sustains investment. This is not beyond the potential of the province. The DA’s vision of an open opportunity society for all encapsulates this.” Jankielsohn emphasised the province had the potential to improve its sorry state of affairs, further challenging the ruling party to practise what it preached regarding job creation. “We simply need to implement the National Development Plan. The DA will support any positive initiatives to improve the economy of our province. The Free State has the potential to turn around our ailing economy and prove to the rest of the country that we are a winning province,” said Jankielsohn. Leona Kleynhans, DA member of the provincial legislature, pointed out that the agricultural sector in the Free State was in drastic decline. “This sector has shed more than 39 000 jobs over the last ten years. The agricultural sector contributes 3,9% towards the provincial economy and it provides 19,2% of formal and 58,9% of informal employment opportunities in the Free State. “This important industry faces serious challenges, with little or no support from government. “A lack of support to emerging farmers, a failure to ensure the safety and security of our rural communities and a total disregard for the crucial economic importance of agriculture create an environment of instability, a hotbed for criminal activity, continuous economic decline and also threaten food security.”

Health officials put on special leave } Selloane Khalane

Worker dies at MEC’s house

MATHABO LEETO, the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, has appealed to the Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprise (SMME) sector to ensure the safety of their workers when they are on duty. This followed the death of Franklin Davis, a worker who accidentally died while working at Leeto’s house. The deceased worked for the company that was appointed by Leeto to fell a tree at her private home in Welkom. Tankiso Zola, the department’s spokesperson, said: “The facts surrounding the incident are not known, the incident is still being investigated by the police. “Neither Leeto nor any member of

the family was present when the incident occurred.” He said information received from both the contractor and the family of the deceased indicated that Davis had been rushed to hospital by the contractor and his fellow workers. “On arrival at the hospital Davis was declared dead. “The contractor should have called the ambulance service to take the worker to hospital. “The police were called by the hospital and now the matter is under police investigation,” said Zola. He said Leeto regretted the incident and had contacted the Davis family to convey her heartfelt condolences.

FIVE officials of the Pelonomi Regional Hospital in Bloemfontein have been put on special leave after Premier Ace Magashule found medical equipment and consumables locked in a transit store at the hospital. Estimated to be worth millions the consumables and equipment were discovered by Magashule on 18 July during a clean-up operation which coincided with International Nelson Mandela Day. Some of the consumables included new heart monitors, uniforms, syringes and toilet paper. David Motau, the head of the Free State Department of Health, announced the suspension of the five officials last Thursday during a media briefing held at Bophelo House in Bloemfontein. Dr Benny Malakoane, the MEC for Health, neither denied nor confirmed whether the chief executive officer of the hospital, Marcus Molokomme, was one of the officials. Sam Mashinini, the MEC for Public Works, said an investigation had been launched after the items had been found. This comes in the wake of the National Treasury transferring financial management authority of the Free State Department of Health to the Provincial Treasury. This followed the revelation that the trouble-ridden department had racked up R700 million in debt and was on the verge of collapse. Mashinini said there was the possibility of putting more officials on special leave pending an investigation. According to him, the special leave had been imposed to ensure that implicated officials did not interfere with the investigation. Malakoane said the investigation would not be restricted to the Pelonomi Hospital but would also probe other health facilities in the province.

Photo: Charl Devenish “We apologise to the people of the Free State for what they had to go through while the necessary consumables were unavailable,” said Msebenzi Zwane, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and acting Free State premier. The shortage of medical consumables at Free State health facilities has been a huge problem for the beleaguered Malakoane and has since caused a public outcry. Malakoane has been under extreme pressure with non-government entities and opposition parties pointing fingers at him and calling for his axing from the influential position of MEC.

Tractors put farmers on right track } Tladi Moloi QWAQWA. – In an endeavour to uplift the economy of the rural areas of the Maluti-aPhofung Local Municipality through African Rainbow Minerals, a subsistence farming initiative, one of South Africa’s multi-millionaires, Patrice Motsepe, has recently donated three tractors to the community of Makgolokoeng, Batlokoa and Bakoena. These tractors were handed over to the village chiefs with the believe that they are the ones who will take care of and use the tractors. However, Director Matlala, the transformation executive leader at African Rainbow Minerals, has pointed out that the tractors were for the community and they would be lent to them on request. Matlala said they were trying to encourage people in the rural areas to use the land to plant so that they could have food. “We want them to use the land sustainably. We want them to make the land they are living on rich with mealies, cabbage, potatoes and many others crops,” he said. He said it was not the first time they had visited Qwaqwa to donate tractors. “We just added some to the ones we have donated before,” he said. “Our understanding was that the first tractors have already been used but we are still looking at ways to improve their effectiveness.” Morobinyana Letshela, a representative from Batlokoa, said they would like to thank the management of African Rainbow Minerals for what they had done for the community. He said they had nothing to thank the company with but they would make sure that they encouraged the community to use the tractors to make the companies come through. “It is the first time that we get a big donation like this and we pray for divine intervention so that they would be used in harmony by the community. “We know that when things like these

A Chevrolet Spark Campus to the value of R112 400 is the winning prize in this year’s For Our Children project. You stand a chance of being the owner of the Spark by making a R20 donation. Your contribution of R20 might be one of the sparks that kindle the flame of caring. This flame will make a huge difference in the lives of many children. Tickets are available at all Engo offices and centres in the Free State. The closing date for entries is 23 November. On 9 January 2015, PwC will announce the five finalists. The final draw will take place in Bloemfontein on 23 January 2015 and the winner will drive away with a brand-new Chevrolet Spark Campus. During the next seven months there will be several promotions across the Free State, where people will be encouraged to buy tickets. The Spark Campus will be at the Kos-en-kunsmark of Volksblad, the Vryfees in Bloemfontein, the Cherry Festival in Ficksburg and several shopping centres across the Free State. The project would not have been possible without the support of loyal sponsors. This year’s sponsors are Imperial GM Bloemfontein, Radio Rosestad and the local papers of Volksblad. Engo child- and youth-care centres are non-profit organisations that take care of children who were removed by the children’s court from their homes,

What you need to know about adoption ENGO FAMILY CARE has been rendering adoption services since 1964 and is accredited to render adoption services in the Free State. There are different types of adoption: ) Disclosed adoption – when the identity of the biological parents and adoptive parents is known to one another. ) Non-disclosed adoption is when the adoptive parents and biological parents are not known to one another. Services from an accredited adoption agency to the biological parents include helping them make an informed decision regarding their child’s future. If the parents agreed to the adoption of their child, several forms need to be because they were in urgent need of care. These child- and youth-care centres create a homely atmosphere for the children and are located within the communities of the Free State. About 800 children from 0 to 18 years are being cared for in 34 child- and youth-care centres across the Free State. Additional support is provided to approximately 2 500 children who live in risky conditions in surrounding communities. The vision is to create hope in children’s lives and the goal is to provide protection and care for as many children

completed regarding the background of the parents. The unmarried biological father of the child must be involved in the whole adoption process and he has the first option to adopt his child. Services to the adoptive parents imply that they must go through a strict screening process to ensure the best placement of the child by the adoption social worker through amongst others office interviews and home visits. ) For more information regarding adoption, call Lorraine Botha at Engo Family Care on 051-522-6914/5/6 or send an email to adoptionsl@engo.co.za or adoptionsm@engo.co.za. as possible in the Free State. Engo youth-care centres in the Free State are struggling financially. The government’s subsidies have increased very little over the past few years and the centres are still expected to provide food for the children with less than R12 per child each day. It has become essential for the community to become involved in projects such as these. For more information on the project and the availability of tickets in your area contact 051-407-7222 or visit www.engo.co.za.

Donations a help

WITH donations received from various businesses, members of the Phase 7 United Soccer and Netbal Club renovated an elderly woman’s house and did work at three other households in Phase 7. According to Thabo Miya, vice-chairperson of the club, they painted the home of Evelyn Nhlapo (88). They also did electrical work, fixed the roof and water pipes. At Maria Radebe’s (74) home some building work was done, resulting in a built-in toilet. Waterpipes were also installed so that she could have running water. New taps and water metres were installed

at Shila Motaung and Makhatliso’s homes. This was all done for Mandela Day. EXPRESS EASTERN FREE STATE, WEDNESDAY 30 JULY 2014

EASTERN FREE STATE

The team’s defence appeared not so solid last season, and they conceded a lot of goals that saw the club descend ing from the top half of the log after a good start.

Coach aims to strengthen team THE management of the Qwaqwabased football outfit Maluti Further Education and Training (FET) College is in the process of beefing up the squad for the 2014-’15 term. As one of only two clubs, including African Warriors, in the Free State’s campaign in the National First Division (NFD), Maluti survived relegation in their maiden season of 2013-’14, finishing in the bottom half of the 16-team competition. The club’s effort to strengthen itself for the new season has seen it enlist Thato Haraba, Thulani Maseko, Tshepo Tomanyane and Simphiwe Mafene. The players have great experience between them and Morena Ramorebodi, Maluti’s coach, hopes they will make a big difference in his effort to transform the team into a formidable side. Mafene captained the North-West University in the Universities Football Competition last year. Journeyman Tomanyane had a stint with clubs like Bloemfontein Young Tigers, Jomo Cosmos, Chippa United and defunct Karara Kicks. The newly-recruited players will give the club’s coach more options in the attacking department. To balance the squad, the team is also on the hunt for competitive defenders. The team’s defence appeared not so solid last season, and they conceded a lot of goals that saw the club descending from the top half of the log after a good start. Maluti conceded 59 goals and scored 44. It was one of the six teams that scored the highest number last season. Their downfall was their poor defence which compelled their coach to recruit quality players to tighten the backline in the forthcoming season.

Nominate Free State’s young sports stars

SUPERSPORT’S LET’S PLAY and Express Eastern Free State are searching for youths in the region who excel at sport. Are you good at sport or is someone in your school or place of education good at sport? Are you a young coach who is coaching future stars? We want to hear from you. SuperSport’s Let’s Play identified the need

amongst the youth to become more sport active. With this in mind SuperSport and Let’s Play, in association with Express Eastern Free State, are running a special initiative for 2014. They want to find and give recognition to learners at either primary or high school level who excel in sport or who are helping others to be more active. SuperSport’s Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month is

a competition for anyone aged 6 to 18. The winner is chosen from all the nominations received for that month. The monthly winner will receive a Let’s Play hamper filled with goodies. From all the entries received each month, one athlete will be chosen as the SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month. At the end of the year one candidate from all the Star of the Month winners during the year will

be chosen as the SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year. Send them your nomination today. Nominations must include your name, age and a short paragraph (200 words or less) on what you have achieved, as well as your contact details.
