Allegedly stabbed his wife } Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows goal minder Nkosana Maseko is in hot water. Maseko, who hails from Baken Park near Bethlehem, is on the police wanted list for two charges of assault common and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to his wife, Mpho Maseko (31). It is alleged that Maseko stabbed his wife with a knife on Friday, 8 August, at the Dihlabeng municipal headquarters. He is still at large. A source in the municipality told Express Eastern Free State that Maseko had arrived at her workplace looking for his wife on that Friday. “We were shocked when he chased his wife before he took out a knife and stabbed her. She had tried to run for her life but she could not escape from her husband. I think he was under the influence of liquor. A security guard tried to catch him but he fled the scene,” a source said. According to a source, the wife WANTED: The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows goal minder Nkosana Maseko who is wanted by the police. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix
was taken to the Mediclinic Hoogland in Bethlehem for treatment after the attack. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and added that two warrants of arrest had been served out for Maseko. “He is wanted for two charges of assault common and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” he said. He said on 26 July Maseko assaulted his wife after they had had an argument. “It is alleged that he requested money from his wife claiming that he was going to Johannesburg for a Carling Black Label game between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Later that day he called his wife and wanted to know where she was. When he arrived home on 26 July, he called her a liar before punching and kicking her,” he said. Mophiring said the second incident happened at Mpho’s workplace where Maseko stabbed her with a knife. “It is alleged that he was under the influence of liquor when he arrived there. He accused his wife of removing a ring from her finger before he chased and stabbed her with a knife. She was stabbed in the head and the back. She was taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.

Municipality leaves people powerless } Nkareng Moloi QWAQWA. – The electricity supply in the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality is a nightmare since the termination of the Rural Maintenance contract and now the community is up in arms. The community of Namahadi Village in Qwaqwa recently hosted a meeting and they are planning to take action. Apparently they had spent seven weekdays without electricity and water. This meeting was attended by about 70 residents. Express Eastern Free State has learnt that this area is one of the few that had the electricity meter boxes installed by Rural Maintenance and they are now struggling to buy electricity. Neo Mahao, one of the concerned residents, told Express EFS that the municipality is violating their basic needs. “In case of the electricity, we are not the
ones who brought Rural Maintenance into our homes but the municipality. The transformers are damaged. It is their responsibility to buy new transformers. As for why we can’t get water, only the municipality knows,” he said. Mahao further explained how tough it was becoming for them to live a normal life. “Some people really need that electricity because their medication is stored in a fridge. For us to have a proper meal, like buying meat, one has to take a taxi to Setsing because local businesses are also affected so that they can’t sell meat. I suggest that we write down our challenges to the mayor, municipal manager, the premier and public protector,” he said. An effort to get a comment from the municipality was fruitless. Questions were submitted to the communication department last Friday, but at the time of going to print, they failed to respond.
THE community of Namahadi Village in Qwaqwa gathered to discuss the electricity failure.

BETHLEHEM. – Michael Masutha, the minister of Justice and Correctional Services, has established a sexual offences court in the Free State at the Bethlehem Court on Friday. This came as a result of a petition from the community of Bethlehem to the deputy minister of Justice, Andries Nel, to intervene following the escalating levels of sexual violence against elderly women and children. The petition was submitted early this year. Masutha says they are a government that listens to its people, hence they had to intervene as they could not allow criminals to
be a menace to the society. He says this was done towards enhancing the services regarding sexual offences in order to protect and promote the rights of victims as complainants in the sexual offence court. “We ought to take pride in our Constitution for globally positioning our country as one of the most liberal countries that expressly affords all victims of crime with internationally recognised human rights that entrench the culture of equality. “The re-establishment of this sexual offences court aims to provide victim support services in a bid to eliminate secondary victimisation of complainants in sexual offences.
“This will also ensure that sexual offence trials are dealt with speedily, especially those involving children and that the investigation and prosecution of the sexual offences are effective and strengthened through the cooperation between stakeholders,” he said. Masutha says it is not fair that women and children of South Africa are living in fear in their own country. “As part of the three-year commitment to the roll-out, the 57 courts received funding to monitor the outcomes of the first nine sexual offence courts which were established in terms of the 2013-’14 Medium-term Strategic Framework from Criminal Asset Recovery Account,” he says.
Apply for ID smart card } Tladi Moloi HARRISMITH. – The Department of Home Affairs in Harrismith is appealing to the citizens of Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality to come and apply for new ID smart cards at the Harrismith Local Office and Bethlehem Local Office. Motake Mopeli, the manager of the Harrismith office of Home Affairs, says they are not happy with the number of people who applies for the smart card. It might happen that people do not have the correct information that is why the department has a slow turnout. “At the first stage we concentrated on the first-time applicants and the pensioners. We could not attend to all the people because we had long lines at our offices,” he said. “We help everyone. It does not necessarily mean you have to go to the office in your residential area.” The offices are open Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 14:00. These are the requirements for an ID smart card: (1) Citizens 60 years and above (pensioner) ) Identity document

Search for Miss SA is on
THE Miss South Africa 2015 Road Show is underway as women across the country celebrate Women’s Month. Two of South Africa’s most beautiful women, the current Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, and a former Miss South Africa and the pageant’s national executive, Melinda Bam, are visiting university campuses across the country. They are talking to the students about their personal ambitions and being driven to achieve success, reveal who they are beneath all the make-up and glitz, and disclose what it will take for prospective entrants to walk away with
the Miss South Africa 2015 crown in Sun City in March next year. The Miss South Africa pageant is a powerful platform for developing potential. It is a celebration of the country’s savvy, smart and beautiful young women who are determined to be the best they can be while being true to themselves. The road show allows young women to hear first-hand what being Miss South Africa entails and learn about the myriad of opportunities it can provide. Great prizes are also up for grabs. The road show started last Tuesday at
the University of Pretoria. It was followed by the University of the North-West, the University of the Western Cape and the University of Stellenbosch, as well as Rhodes University. Today both Strauss and Bam are visiting Varsity College (KZN). Thereafter they will be at the University of Limpopo before they wrap up the tour at the University of the Free State. Those wishing to enter Miss South Africa 2015 can enter online or download the entry forms at www.misssa.co.za. Entries close on 31 August.
HARRISMITH. – Six high school learners of the New Horizon College (NHC) in Harrismith punched above their weight when they made it into the fourth position at the Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (Sage) World Championships in Moscow, Russia, last Monday. This group represented the Free State and was competing with other entrepreneurially inspired learners from 55 countries from all over the world. The Free State team took fourth place after Ireland, America and Nigeria as announced at a gala dinner held in Moscow. They received medals and a trophy. This exciting youth empowerment entrepreneurship programme is the initiative of Sage, a non-profit organisation which aims to enhance entrepreneurship skills among high school learners. Mosebenzi Zwane, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, supported the New Horizon High School as part of the department’s SMME incubation and entrepreneurial development. Speaking from Russia after the announcement, Retshedisitswe Losabe, a New Horizon College learner, said this was the opportunity of a lifetime. “We were competing with the best in the world and this has given us confidence that we can compete on the world stage. This programme will go a long way in fighting crime and contributing to job creation in our country,” she said. Retshedisitswe explained that what she had noticed about other countries participating at the competition was that they were represented by more than two schools compared to South Africa. “I would like to encourage other schools in our country to enter the competition next year, as this will add to our advantage in winning,” emphasised Retshedisitswe. She thanked Zwane on behalf of the team for supporting them and believing in them.

There’s no looking back KOLOTI MALAKOANE (49), who hails from Wilgepark in Harrismith, says women should stand up and pursue their dreams. She says nothing is impossible through hard work. Malakoane took a risk years ago when she resigned as an acting principal at the Iteboheleng Primary School and joined the Independent Field Advertisers (IFA), the network marketing division of Clientèle Life. She has never looked back. She has travelled to Thailand, Mauritius, Indonesia, Europe and Brazil, courtesy of IFA. She is also a shareholder of MTN, Vodacom and Sasol, to mention just a few. Tladi Moloi chatted with her to find out more. KOLOTI MALAKOANE (49), who hails from Wilgepark in Harrismith, poses next to her big black car. Photo: Tladi Moloi
Tell us about yourself. I AM Koloti Malakoane, the third child in a family of five. I am married to Thabiso Malakoane. We are blessed with two daughters, Lebohang (29) and Pontsho (27).
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Tsheseng Village in Qwaqwa. Believe you me, it was very nice to grow up in such an underrated village. People always thought Tsheseng was in Lesotho.
Where did you go to your school? In 1976 I first went to the Tsheseng Lower Primary School. From there I went to the Koos Mota Primary School in 1979. I then went to Phofung Secondary before I finished my matric year at the Manthatisi High School. I furthered my studies at the Sefikeng College of Education where I got my Primary Teacher’s Diploma. In 1990, I went to the University of the Free State (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus to study for a BA degree. I studied for a Further Diploma in Remedial Education at the University of Johannesburg in 1994. I went back to the UFS for an honours degree in Geography. I also did Educational Management the North-West University in Potchefstroom.
Where did you work first; where did you go from there? I started working at the Katleho Primary School as a teacher in 1992. I was promoted to a head of department (HOD) position at the Sekgompepe Primary School in 1995. Then, in 1998, I was a deputy principal at the Iteboheleng Primary School. I was promoted again at Iteboheleng as an acting principal. I resigned in 2004 from the Department of Education.
The problem that most people have, is that they are never focused and they end up losing what they want.
Why did you resign? I came across this IFA business in 2002 and it won my heart. I worked in that business for two years while I was a principal, but after that I saw no reason to stay at the school.
How was it, leaving your profession and going into business? I compared the two fields – I realised that there was more money in the IFA. I worked for the Education Department for 12 years and only worked part time at the IFA for two years. But I’ll tell you, what I was getting at the IFA was already on the same level with what I was getting anyway. I asked myself, what would this give me if I concentrated more on it? I then made a choice and that worked for me.
As far as I know, however I could be corrected on this one, you are the most successful woman in the IFA from Thabo Mofutsanyana. How did you manage to achieve this? It is simple to be successful. However, it takes a strong person to achieve that. You need to be dedicated and be determined. You should also be focused and have a passion for what you are doing. You need to imitate from people who have already been on top.
August is Women’s Month. What message do you have for women? What I can say to them, is to work hard. They should associate themselves with the best because they will be able to learn from them. They should keep going no matter the situation. The problem that most people have, is that they are never focused and they end up losing what they want. Perseverance is the mother of success.
You grew up in the dusty streets of Tsheseng. Did you always think you would get this far? I never believed (ntate). Never. But once I got into this business, I never looked back. I refused to look at those who had failed.

Increase in taxi fares is daylight robbery they are told regardless of the truth. One would ask where I am headed with this and the answer would be our public transport industry. Bethlehem is a growing town and the executive municipality without a university, radio station or a shopping complex in the location, yet you find the residents paying crazy taxi fare amounts. I mean, one would try to understand the method used to calculate these fares. I was shocked when I got back last
I AM the last born and the only boy in my family and this saw me growing up as a loner. In most cases I would use the time to analyse and try to find reason in how life works. I got to realise that life is very simple and tailored in such a way that all is relative and people will believe anything
year to see that we are now paying R10 for a single trip. I mean, Bethlehem isn’t even half the size of Bloemfontein or Welkom, yet I still pay R8 minimum in Bloemfontein to go to suburbs kilometres away from the CBD. I then realised why we are paying so much. We have taxi owners who have about ten taxis on the route and the industry is being
monopolised by no more than five big players whose taxis are everywhere, from long distance and kasi to town daily routes. What baffles me is that should one buy a taxi, getting a permit is a nightmare as these big players regulate who gets in. Bullying is also the order of business and prices are being inflated so as those with one or two taxis could break even because it makes no sense to
pay R10 from kasi to town. They will claim it is due to running costs and maintenance plus salaries, yet how is it then that one pays R8 in Bloemfontein for a distance that is four times further than that from circle three to town? Well, then again, I guess the citizens are happy and see nothing wrong with this injustice, so I guess the sooner I leave here, the better.

Students learn about space science

PHUTHADITJHABA. – Three students of the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus were recently invited to attend the prestigious National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme (NASSP) held at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town. The programme is targeted at students from formerly disadvantaged institutions of higher learning, where the subjects of Astronomy and Astrophysics are not being offered. As such, NASSP currently works with a number of institutions like the UFS Qwaqwa Campus, the North-West University Mafikeng Campus, University of Zululand, University of Limpopo and University of Venda. Students are invited to apply for the programme, with emphasis put on students majoring in Mathematics and Physics, though
students from other fields are also invited to apply. This allows for the development of black astronomers and astrophysicists, which are in demand in the ever-growing environment of astronomy in South Africa. The programme runs for two weeks and it is held in conjunction with the National Research Foundation. One of the students, Thokozane Ngcongwane, said the programme challenged them to work on basic astrophysical concepts in groups, with individual written assignments being part of the learning process. “Every group had a post-doctorate mentor who helped with the unravelling of the tasks at hand. We also had guest lecturers giving us understanding on the multitude of research topics offered within the umbrella of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Topics such as gravitational
lenses, black holes, stellar evolution and the mysteries of cosmology were presented and students were invited to engage with the speakers during and after the presentation,” said Ngcongwane, a third-year Entomology and Zoology student. Ngcongwane said the lectures offered were relevant to quite a lot of the topics they studied as students. “The information given by experts in their specific fields became a treasure to the young and excited minds, as the information could be used to further enhance their own knowledge, as well as help in their individual studies. And given the lack of information about the complexities of Astronomy the students had, this was the most ideal time to learn about all matters Astronomy and Astrophysics,” Ngcongwane said.

EASTERN FREE STATE “We are going there to compete. We don’t want to win the league but keeping our status will be a priority,”
‘The Great’ has big plans } Tladi Moloi
DEDICATION: Edwin "The Great" Mofokeng, the Free State Development Academy mentor.
BETHLEHEM. – Edwin “The Great” Mofokeng, the Free State Development Academy mentor, says he is ready to compete in the South African Football Association (Safa) ABC Motsepe League for the 2014-’15 season. Mofokeng guided his team to the Motsepe League through the national promotional play-offs after he had won the championship of the Safa Thabo Mofutsanayana South African Breweries (SAB) Regional League. He said winning the league had not been an easy task, but he had managed to do it after five seasons. “We won it as that was our target for that season. We were there for a long time and we felt it was time to play in the next stage,” he said. Academy, a development outfit of the Absa Premier league team Free State Stars, finished second on the log table in the four seasons that they had played in the SAB League. They watched the likes of Hurricanes FC, Dla2 FC and Mighty Wits snatching the title under their nose. Hurricanes won it twice in the 2008-’09 and 2009-’10 seasons, Dla2 in 2010 -’11, while Dla2 FC and Wits from Bethlehem won it in 2011-’12 . However, all those teams never made it to the next league as they were knocked out in the national play-offs. Mofokeng said they were not going to the Motsepe League to add numbers but to compete. However, he put it straight that winning the league would not be their target for this season. “We are going there to compete. We don’t want to win the league but keeping our status will be a priority,” he said. He said their main aim was to
produce players for their senior team. “We would be happy if we could produce players for our senior team. There is talent that needs to be nurtured at grass-root level and it is our duty to develop that because a senior team has no time to nurture players,” he said. They are preparing the team and they hope to produce 25 players at the end of the month. “We have some trialists at the moment who are still working with our squad from last season. I am not in a position to say who will stay and who will go until the end of the season. We need strikers,” he said. After winning the league, Themba Sithole, who has been with Ea Lla Koto for more than ten years, was demoted to work with Mofokeng at the development team. They will be working together for the next season. Mofokeng said working with Sithole was a blessing in disguise. “I am happy to work with him because I am learning from him. He has been in football for a long time and we know that one has to work with the best to be the best,” he said. During this year’s Stars Gala Awards ceremony, which was held at the Orange Guest House which is about 20 km from Fouriesburg on the road to Clarens, Rantsi Mokoena, the general manager of the team, said that the team would make sure that they equip Mofokeng for his coaching career. He said they would send him on courses. “He has done a great job and he deserves better. We’ll help him. Maybe he will be able to guide the senior team in the season to come,” he said.
