Editor’s Corner Hey, guys! SUMMER BREAK is finally here! Have fun. Relax. Continue to volunteer! Don’t forget about Key Club just because school is over. Keep up the good work! -Lexi Cepak, NCKC Editor

LETTER FROM THE CO CO--

VICE PRESIDENT J O R D A N

P E Y T O N

North Crowley Key Club officers are sworn in by LTG Vanessa Castañeda at their officer meeting. (L-R: Daisy Doan, Olivia Courtney, Lexi Cepak, & Vanessa Castañeda.)

Hey, Key Club! As last year’s North Crowley Key Club Historian, I’m excited to start my new role as club Vice-President with Olivia Courtney. I’m thrilled to be able to take on a bigger role in my school and community. Continue to serve your school and community during the summer. School is over, but the community still needs our help. Please volunteer at our car washes on June 6th at Chick-Fil-A on Alta Mesa and June 12th at Joe’s Pizza to help raise money for Sara Al-Midany and I’s trip to ICON! We’ll need all the help we can get since we’re taking time out of our summer to represent District 1S at International Convention. Key Club is Life! Yours in service,

NCKC Vice President

PANTHER OLYMPICS

By: Lexi Cepak

North Crowley Key Club got the opportunity to participate in our school’s Panther Olympics this year on Friday, May 22nd along with other clubs like National Honor Society and Student Council. Panther Olympics is a school event that allows children with disabilities to participate in a fun activity where they can exercise, socialize, and have fun. Key Clubbers were called out of class in the morning to begin the event in the gym, where they met their Panther Olympics partners and did various warmups with them like jumping jacks (pages 2-3). They jumped rope with them and had a great time. Then, it was time for the “race” around the school where Panther Olympics participants marched down hallways and paraded around the entire school. Everyone in the entire school was invited to leave their classrooms and line up around the edges of the hallway to cheer for the helpers and participants as they marched by. Volunteers got to bond with the participants and other caring students from their school. Overall, this was an amazing event where members got to help disabled students have a fun school day that they’ll never forget while still having a great time themselves.

S PRING T RAINING C ONFERENCE

By: Danielle Scott

On May 16th, I attended the Spring Training Conference with Daisy Doan, our president and Jordan Peyton our vice president. We met at Arlington High School where there were tables and chairs set up for all officers from Division 1 South. The theme this year was “Wizard of Oz,” and members had to dress up as a character from the movie. Along with dressing up, we had the opportunity to attend forums, play icebreakers, and enjoy refreshments such as pizza and soda. The Spring Training Conference was very helpful in providing new ideas that will continue to lead us in the right direction for next year. I attended the forum for secretary’s, which included a brief power point presented by our District Secretary, Crystal Loh. The power point presentation included a synopsis of the tasks that each secretary is responsible for completing throughout the year. The secretary forum was very informative and provided a great insight to what is to come as secretary next year. Overall, I enjoyed the Spring Training Conference, because it provided a fun and interesting way to learn more about Key club and meet new officers from Division 1 South. Spring Training got me exited for my position as Secretary!

FEED THE CHILDREN

Article By: Lexi Cepak

On Saturday, May 9th, North Crowley Key Club headed to Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center to participate in our community’s Feed the Children event. When we arrived, we were directed to a large open area and given hairnets. Our Key Club was assigned to a station with other community members where we were to prepare food.

We were all given different jobs. Jordan Peyton was in charge of holding bags under a funnel that we poured various dried soup ingredients into. We were each given numbers so we could pour our ingredients into the bag quickly without forgetting any steps. One the timer started, we measured out and poured our ingredients into the bag. We excitedly shouted, “One! Two! Three!” We continued to work and count and pour our ingredients into bags to the rhythm of the music, trying to fill as many bags as possible while competing with the other teams at different stations. The children and parents helping our team weighed and labeled each bag after we were done filling it. They then loaded the bags into boxes. When each box was complete, they shouted the number of boxes that we had finished. We had a great time working together to feed children. The workers for Feed the Children were really encouraging, upbeat, and organized,

which made the event seem effortless and fun. By the time the timer went off, we had bagged almost all of the ingredients in the building that were to go into the soup mixes. We helped clean up, condensing all of the leftover ingredients into single containers and helping pack everything up.

After we finished, we gathered into a small group by a stage. The speaker told us that we had helped them exceed their goal of making 300,000 meals that day. He said that the ood would be sent to children in other countries where they’d cook it and give it to hungry children. We took pictures with the sign and then we were offered samples of the soup we had just made. It was pretty good!

It was amazing to know that even though each of us had only spent about two hours helping, we could come together and really make a difference for people in another part of he world. Overall, this was a wonderful event, and I can’t wait until there’s another opporunity to participate in a Feed the Children event in my community.

BARNES & NOBLE STORYTIME

By: Lexi Cepak

On Saturday, May 30th, North Crowley Key Clubbers attended Barnes & Noble Storytime, an event held every Saturday. Yera Duran, Danielle Scott, and Jordan Peyton read Peanut Butter & Cupcake to children at 11:30am. The children were so interested in the story that some of them got up on the stage to look at the book closer. They even stole books and started looking at the pictures for themselves. After Danielle and Yera finished reading, they headed over to the arts and crafts table where they gave the children coloring sheets and crayons. The children had a great time coloring the cupcake and peanut-buttered toast characters from the book. They also enjoyed the mazes. Jordan had a fun time taking pictures of the children while they were being read to and as they were coloring, capturing the moments that would forever be held in a special place in her heart. The Barnes & Noble Storytime children are always so fun to work with. They make this event truly worthwhile and a great experience for all members.

P ANTHERS R ECYCLE

By: Lexi Cepak

On June 3rd and 4th, the last days of school for North Crowley High School students, Key Club was still hard at work. Before and after school, they worked together to collect all of the recycling from teachers and dump it into the recycling bins outside of the school. It took a lot of work since all of the teachers were dumping out all of their extra papers from the entire year. Sara Al-Midany, Jordan Peyton, and Daisy Doan had a fun time working and bonding, even though the school year was coming to an end. By the time they finished recycling, all of the school’s recycle bins were filled to the brim with papers and other recyclable objects. That’s about 300 cubic feet of recycling per recycling bin! Making paper from recycled materials like what we put into our recycling bins instead of producing new paper heavily reduces the contribution to air pollution. Recycling one stack of newspaper three feet high saves one tree, so throughout the year, Panthers Recycle has saved hundreds of trees! Recycled paper doesn’t only save trees, but water, landfill space, energy, and oil, as well. Panthers Recycle is an amazing project that has a major impact on the community.

JA HARGRAVE CARNIVA

AL Danielle Lockridge and Victor Amajor were assigned the Claim your Book table where children got to pick out books. They had a great time socializing with each other and helping the children. Other Key Club members were assigned to things like twister, where children could compete with each other to win prizes, and the lock game, where children had five guesses as to which key would fit into the door and unlock it. On Saturday, May 30th, 2015, North Crowley Key Club volunteered at J.A. Hargrave's annual children's carnival from noon until 5pm. They had the opportunity to work alongside other community members as well as other clubs from their school, such as Computer Science Club. As the members arrived, they were required to sign in and then were sent to their assigned locations. The carnival consisted of many activities such as bounce houses, Twister, face painting, raffles, cake walks, and other game booths. North Crowley Key Clubbers were assigned to a variety of game booths, bounce houses, and check-ins. The key clubbers helped out by showing the kids how to play the games and keeping them in order. They also gave out game prizes and expressed enthusiasm as the children played the games. The key clubbers at bounce houses were in charge of making sure the children played orderly and safely. They were thrilled to watch the excitement in the children as they raced up the inflatable obstacle course.

As the carnival came to an end, the key clubbers helped clean up and pack up. They broke down the booths and picked up trash as well as stacking up tables and chairs. They then organized the equipment and returned the school back to normal. Once everything was cleaned up, the key clubbers and other volunteers gathered in the cafeteria for a prize drawing. Many volunteers as well as NC key clubbers won awesome prizes such as a camping kit, utensils, makeup, and gift cards. The carnival turned out to be very fun and successful as the key clubbers enjoyed volunteering with all the children, and the children enjoyed the various games and prizes. This event never gets old, and I can’t wait to volunteer at J.A. Hargrave’s Carnival again next year.

Ashley VanKeer was assigned the Lollipop tree. Some of the lollipops were marked with black dots at the end, and if the child chose a lollipop that was marked, she’d give them a prize. Either way, they got a free lollipop. Article By: Daisy Doan
