Editor’s Corner Hey, Key Club! I hope those of you who are attending are looking forward to our upcoming District Convention and International Convention! Keep up the hard work! -Lexi Cepak, NCKC Editor

Hey Key Clubbers! Hey guys! I hope everyone has been keeping track of hours and attending as many events as possible. DCON is right around the corner, so please try to come help out with our projects that will be entering in the contests. We are extremely excited for this district convention and it is such a huge deal for many of us, so we need all the help we can get :) Although, key club is pretty slow with events right now, we are always open to new ideas for events members have for us. Also don’t forget that members have to have 80 hours by the end of the school year! If you are worried that you will not meet that standard, please come talk to me and we can always work something out, because I know a lot of us students have jobs and other duties to attend in other clubs. I hope you all had a great spring break and don’t forget that AP exams are coming up, so study and you will all do great :)

FINI

On Saturday, March 28th, 2015, North Crowley Key Club participated in the "Finish Strong" Community event to help encourage kids of all ages to be motivated into finishing their year off "Strong"! The Community event was located at the Greenbrier Community Center and Park in Fort Worth. It consisted of many games and activities such as basketball, carnival games, bounce houses, inflatable games, educational sessions, and music concerts. Key Clubbers arrived at noon that Saturday and were welcomed by a busy staff who were setting up for the event. Key Clubbers helped out by filling up the coolers with ice, water and fountain drink cans in order to have refreshments for the community. After they were done, the Key Clubbers carried bikes from inside the building out onto a stage outside in order to prepare for a prize contest that would take place later that day. Once that was done, NC Key Clubbers were assigned to accompany and watch the children at the inflatable games outside. This was such a fun task because the volunteers were able to engage with many kids of all ages, from a young toddler to even 12 year olds. The kids were so friendly and en-

thusiastic. The volunteers talked to many of the older kids about school, asking how they are doing, how they feel, and if they are excited. They were all thrilled to find out that the kids were super excited and engaged, all thanks to this event. The Key Clubbers were able to encourage the kids about school while also having fun with them. Some Key Clubbers even went through the inflatable obstacles to help the younger kids, especially toddlers, through safely. Though hesitant at first, they were able to have a fun adventure! The Key Clubbers also helped guide parents and encourage families to be engaged into the concerts and sessions. Many families were drawn in and had the opportunities to gain prizes just by participating. As the event came to an end, NC Key Clubbers helped clean up and break down the area. Through teamwork and hard work, they were able to make the task successful and finished! This event was so engaging, exciting and moving because Key Clubbers were able to be apart of helping kids be successful in school and finishing off their year STRONG!

BARNES & NOBLE STOR was Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I immediately started drawing Belle with crayons on one of the coloring pages. The girl came and sat by me while I drew, handing me colors and telling me what color various parts of Belle were. When I finally finished drawing Belle, I handed her the drawing. I was immediately given a big hug that I will always remember. Barnes and Noble Storytime is a great event for Key Club members that love to work with children. It’s really rewarding to be able to entertain Analiese Claire, Victor Amajor and I had an especially great experience at Barnes & Noble Storytime on Saturday, March 28th. We arrived at 10

COWTOWN CLEAN-UP

I went to North Crowley High School on Saturday March 28 to help clean up my own school. The amount of people that showed up was awesome, and the event was great too. We had to be there by 8 in the morning, and we waited for other people to arrive so we could start. Big garbage bags were provided with gloves for each one of us besides a bag for recycling. It was really nice seeing a lot of people wearing the same shirt and doing the same thing. It made me feel that we were all engaged to what we were doing, no matter what club we came with (be it NHS or Key Club, since this was a shared event). I clearly saw how all of these people cared about their school and their city. We were also told to take pictures of unique stuff if found before putting them in the bag because they wanted to give prizes. We got into groups of 5 to 6 people and got assigned an area. I was in a group with Demi, Daisy, Danielle, Vincent and Christina. The weather was kind of nice, especially walking on grass with flowers around you; somehow, it took our minds off the usual idea that runs through people’s minds, "Picking up trash is nasty."

We got to meet new people from our own school, some of which I haven't seen before. It was a great opportunity to make new friends! We got to see how things started to dispose into the ground and that's pretty cool. Honestly, I was very proud of what I saw. There wasn't too much trash around, there wasn't any inappropriate stuff, and everything looked pretty clean, and that made me really proud. I enjoyed the sense of accomplishment I got from helping out my school and community. I feel like we really made a difference. I also loved getting the opportunity to take pictures of an event for the first time, since Jordan Peyton, North Crowley Key Club’s 2015-2016 vice-president (along with Olivia Courtney) and current Key Club historian, has been helping me prepare for my new position as Historian. Everyone had a great time posing for pictures and helping the community. It was a great event mostly because we bonded with other clubs, and I am really looking forward to doing it again next year.

The people that competed were really friendly and a bond was formed between the competitor and the judge as the day went on. After each group of competitors, awards were given out to those who performed the best and scored the most points for the activity. The reactions of those who won were priceless! BLOOD DRIVE

By: Lexi Cepak

On Thursday, March 25th, North Crowley Key Club held their final blood drive for the 2014 - 2015 school year. I had a great time helping out with the blood drive after lunch. I got to spend time with Ms. Laing, North Crowley Key Club’s sponsor, Karen, our vice-secretary, and Sara, our newly elected historian. I even got to spend time with Bernice and Demi, who will be graduating this year. I love getting to help with the blood drive because although I don’t weigh enough to donate, it makes me happy to see so many students that are willing to give their blood in order to help others. Helping with forms and paperwork makes me feel like I’m a part of the blood donation process, even though I don’t get to give my own blood. Karen always has a great time taking pictures of me when I’m busy. We have a great time together. I even got to know Sara a little better, which was great since she’s going to be part of our officer team for next year. I even got some silly pictures of Ms. Laing while she was telling students which bus they needed to go to in order to give blood.

T ARRANT C OUNTY G ARDEN

By: Lexi Cepak

Sara Al-Midany, Dang Nguyen, Jordan Peyton, Destiny Salcido, and Julie Tran helped out at Tarrant County Garden this March. They helped the community by planting vegetables that could later be harvested. Destiny said, “The community garden was a great experience!” The first thing she saw when she arrived was an average church, but she was soon led to a small, beautiful garden. There were already a lot of volunteers from the community and other schools there, but they welcomed North Crowley Key Club to help them. They all grouped together and got to work. They planted vegetables and even got to water them. They learned how to garden, plant, and grow vegetables. “This gave me a sense of helping those in need and my community,” said Destiny. It was a rewarding experience to get to help out the community in a way that would have lasting impact. Most Key Club events focus on helping the community in short term ways like by picking up trash, volunteering at races, and attending food banks. This event was unique because if they continue to plant vegetables, volunteers will be able to impact the community in lasting ways.
