Place for Grace DCM

Article By: Daisy Doan On Saturday, December 12th, 2015, the Kiwanis of Weatherford hosted their annual “Place for Grace” Christmas Party at Antonio’s Mexican Restaurant in Weatherford from 1:30-4:30 pm. The Christmas party was also combined with the DCM, or Divisional Council Meeting, for the month. The “Place for Grace” party was dedicated to the foster family that has been supported by the Kiwanis for the past years. North Crowley Key Club had the privilege of being invited to join the Christmas party in order to participate in giving back to the foster kids in the family, especially during the holiday season. Prior to the party, we had received a list of the children left that needed to have gifts bought for them. We chose to sponsor and shop for a young man named Hayden Ekas. His wish-list consisted of different clothing items and ski attire and we were thrilled to be able to buy gifts for someone this Christmas. Although we had no idea who he was, it made us happy to know that we could impact his Christmas positively just by giving. We then set out to shop for the gifts and prepared it for the party.

13

On the day of the “Place for Grace” Christmas party, another officer, Yerasly, and I carpooled to the restaurant with our gifts. We arrived and were welcomed by many familiar faces – our Kiwanians! We recognized many Kiwanians from previous DCMs, especially our home Kiwanians of Southwest-Fort Worth. We were greeted with many friendly smiles and were welcomed by our past adviser

and Regional LTG, Ms. Newsham. As everything got situated, the DCM began and we all stood up for the pledge and greetings. Ms. Newsham then took the floor and discussed events and topics that were going on with the Kiwanis from different clubs. We were also able to share what North Crowley has been participating in during the holiday season. As the DCM came to a closing, the family of “Place for Grace” was introduced. We were finally able to see the faces in family and were so excited to be able to meet them. The party began as Santa Claus and his elf arrived and sat In the front of the room to be able to gift each member in the family. Each family member got the chance to sit with Santa to receive the gifts contributed by all the Kiwanis and Key Clubs. It was so heart-warming and humbling to be able to see how happy each child and parent was to be able to open and see their gifts. We also got the chance to see the young man we sponsored open his gift and were so blessed to see the smile on his face. It made us feel so thankful to be able to make a difference to others this holiday, especially a stranger. Once everyone finished opening their gifts, we all gathered to take a group picture with our Kiwanians and the foster family. We also got the chance to meet and personally speak to Hayden, who was so sweet and kind. The “Place for Grace” Christmas party not only was fun, but was so heart -warming to be able to spend more time with our Kiwanis and to meet a new, loving family.

BELL

RUN

On Saturday, December 5th, I attended Jingle Bell Run with my friend David. We arrived and walked through Burnett Park. We were greeted by the sweet sound of Christmas carols being sung by a woman on stage. There were lots of booths set up where people could sign up for raffles, listen to music, or get their faces painted. It took us a while to find our volunteer station, but once we found it, we received our Jingle Bell Run t-shirts. We then waited for all of the other volunteers to arrive so we could be debriefed at the same time. While we waited, we took a group picture. We were all freezing, but seeing how large our Key Club family had grown made me feel really happy. We had a full group of volunteers in the picture, and we had to form rows! After everyone arrived, we were given vests and told that we would be route guides for the race. We walked a couple of blocks as a group and were then separated into smaller groups and loaded onto a truck. David and I were assigned the first station, so we got off on the first stop. First, we directed children to the left as they ran by. For the official Jingle Bell Run/Walk, we directed everyone to the left. Before we saw the runners, we heard the distinct sound of bells ringing in the distance. The runners, wearing bells, soon

came into sight. It was really exciting to see all of them in their Christmas attire. Some had reindeer horns and Santa outfits, while others had elf costumes or tutus. Some people even ran with their dogs! After the last runners passed us, a truck picked us up and took us on its route as it removed cones from the street. We then arrived at a water station, where we helped clean up and then were loaded into another truck and sent home. Even though the weather was cold, I had a great time at the Jingle Bell Run/ Walk. The winter weather got me in the mood for the holiday season, and it was a fun experience because I got to help people with a friend. The 5K run/walk was the nation’s largest holiday 5K race aimed to cure arthritis. In Fort Worth alone, it raised over $93,339 for the Arthritis Foundation. Volunteering at races is always a rewarding experience because not only do they raise money for a certain cause, but they also raise awareness about it.
