PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW OFFICER BOARD. THEY HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND AND ARE TAKING THEIR MEMBERSHIP TO NEW LEVELS. WE’RE DELIGHTED TO HAVE THEM ALL. TREASURER: JAILENE CONTRERAS PARLIAMENTARIAN: IGGY PREVITO

VICE PRESIDENT’S PLAN like Google Forms and can even be integrated into our website. Next year can be seen as a trial run for such a system, in which the members can get used to technology, and bugs/glitches/ inconveniences can be identified and fixed.

With a completely fresh young board comes both challenges and opportunities. Getting the new board up to speed, organized and ready to handle any task will take a bit of time, but I’m confident that this new board will be able to achieve all our goals and push for excellence in our region and in the community we volunteer for. My biggest plan for next year is to improve on the infrastructure of Key Club – the systems we have in place to inform members and coordinate the club. For example, sign ins and volunteering logs are traditionally done on pencil and paper, and the information is decentralized – each member records their own hours. Secretaries are able to obtain the information through the members, however this process is inefficient and members can forget to log their volunteering or lose their log sheet, and sign in sheets could be unavailable. Technology is the answer. A new system of safe centralized record keeping can be setup with light weight programs

I hope that with our new board we will be able to increase the perceived presence and prestige of Key Club in our school. Currently, although everyone knows what Key Club, our accomplishments are not that well known. The new board has tons of vigor and creativity. I think we will be able to spread the word of Key Club to even more people than this school year, and I think we will be able to direct more of our efforts into posters, announcements, and freshmen outreach (as we have a separate 9th grade building for freshmen, which makes it difficult for Key Club to get in touch with freshmen). Continuing off the freshmen, they are a barely tapped resource that if we can connect better with, would prove to be the greatest boon to North Crowley Key Club in years. The problem of reaching out to the freshmen has been known for a while now, and this year was the first time NCHS Key Club has attempted to solve it – by hosting separate meetings at the 9th grade campus. I believe this gives the new board a solid foundation to strengthen our presence across all classes and recruit a flood of volunteers. Big hopes, I know, but I have confidence in all of our abilities and our will to act. Article By: Vincent Berardi

What Story Time is, is an event that we have every Saturday at Barnes and Nobles located at, 4801 Overton Ridge Blvd #100, Fort Worth, TX 76132. Members must arrive at 9:30’o clock in the morning or 10’o clock in the morning to setup the story time. We officially start reading to the lovely children at 11’oclock in the morning and we start our crafts or worksheet at 11:30 and continue up until 12’oclock in the afternoon. Story time has been one of the main events that we have every weekend, other than the other events that we have. What this does for North Crowley Key club is that we get to connect to the local youth, by reading them stories and get them to color things related to the story we read. It also gets them involved and expands their communications and also they get to bond with an older generation. The reason why story time is important is because that we get to see how many people come out to join us in story time. Anyone is welcomed to come anytime and join us in story time, and also join us with arts and crafts, and worksheets with your child, or you can even bond with other youthful people.

more and more people would come to volunteer and help out. We would begin to set up and pick out which books would be a great option to read to the kids that day, and also pick out crafts and worksheets to color afterwards. When all of that is done the announcer of Barnes & Nobles would say if anyone is up for story time it is going right now. I’d say we don’t get a lot of people to join us in story time, but I’d say it is a decent amount of people. Overall story time is great, and I’m glad we have it every Saturday. We are also known for this event, and I don’t want that to change. This event is a great opportunity for people to communicate with other younger generation, so they can build relationship. This creates a bond with them by reading them stories and doing arts, crafts and worksheets together.

I remember my first experience with Barnes & Nobles story time. It was pretty empty at first, maybe because I showed up pretty early. While time progressed

OFFICER

TRAINING

& DIGITAL POSTER MEETING

On Friday, March 25th, the old officers met the new at Barnes & Noble to give them tips on how to perform the tasks associated with their positions. First, everyone gathered around a single table and we had a mini officer meeting. Then, everyone split into groups. We paired up the old officers with the incoming ones.

Kelly and Oanh were both quick learners. Soon enough, they knew how to use the basics of Photoshop as well as me. They were making layers and changing colors and typing in text boxes. They even sorted through pictures and picked out a few to use on a side project.

Finally, the incoming officer board had their own meeting without us. It was a moment filled with both pride and sadness because it enforced the idea that our time as Key Club officers is almost over.

Whether it be for key club, other volunteer organizations, or just for your own desire; serving is a fundamental aspect of a great human being. Not only that but the world you live evolves as people like us take part in making it more and more beautiful each and every day. When you sign yourself up for an event that has to do with volunteering you should be proud because you are taking a step to make this planet better for everyone on it. Without service selfish attitudes would run rampant and no one would be willing to help each other out. Our race (Homo Sapiens) was able to become such a prevalent organism because of its ability and its desire to work with each other. No obstacle was too big for our ancient ancestors because of our power as a unit. This reason should be the reason why we serve. Let’s take our minds off of the hours and the fun trips like DCON for one second and view the true reason for our service for our community. The real reason why there are things like key club is so that we can be of use to the millions around us that might not be as lucky as us.

17

There are many people that are suffering every day and so we are needed to push them forward; to help them survive. In some ways we are a hero for the planet; saving the planet and the people living in it. We are setting an example for others when we provide service and we are tell them to do the same. When we provide service and become a better person we encourage others to step up and better themselves as well. When we go out to a cleaning and pick up a trash we are making the earth healthier for the animals living in it as well. Everyday animals are threatened when a plastic bottle or a soda ring it thrown into the environment. The pollution is also very poisonous for the environment and therefore our service is a necessity for the health of our whole planet. We are also motivators for the people that might have given up on life. Service is the key to becoming a better person and the key to making the world a more bright and better place to live in for us and everyone on it.

Cowtown Cleanup

Article By: Fawaz Khan

This year, Cowtown Cleanup consisted of students from AVID, NHS, and Key Club. Everyone met up at the front of the school at 8:30 am to get gloves and trash bags, two for trash and one for recycle. Once everyone got their supplies and split up into groups 6-8 people, we were sent off into directions to pick up trash. My group was Daisy, Jordan, Karen, Yerasly, Oanh, Clarence, Danielle, and me. We were sent to area by the football field and we worked our way around the fence of the field and back to the front of the school. While we were cleaning, we realized that North Crowley is a lot cleaner than we expected. As we were picking up, we decided to play a few games of who could find the weirdest piece of trash, or who could the biggest single piece of trash, and even who could pick the trash up first. I actually found a Dr.Pepper can, so I technically won when it came to finding the biggest single

19

piece. The trash bags we had we actually really big, so big that we could fit Jordan in there, so we all ended up having a running joke of calling Jordan “trash”. We would either make a subtle joke to her about it, or we would just bluntly call trash. The most dedicated person in our group though would have to be Daisy. When the entire group would be laughing and making jokes, not picking up trash, she would be 30 feet ahead of us, picking up trash along the fence and in the grass patch. But no matter how much we picked up, there was no way we could fill up the whole trash bags. Those things were huge. If we put took the bags we had and put them into one, we would only be able to fill up half of it. But it doesn’t matter if we picked up a lot of trash or a little bit of trash. We helped better our community and made a cleaner place and I’m glad that I did this with the best people at school.

TARRANT AREA food donated is from local grocery stores! I did not realize how much stores like Kroger and Walmart donated to our foodbank; we had boxes and boxes full of all types of bread from there. It took a while to sort the bread into different boxes, but with the help of other Key Club members from various clubs around the district, we completed the task with ease. On Saturday, March 5th, from nine until noon, North Crowley Key Club helped organize food at the local Tarrant Area Food Bank. The food bank dedicates their time to providing sustenance for the people in our community who may not have access to food. Every few Saturdays, clubs from different schools attend to help separate, organize, and group food into packages to give to those in need. When the members first arrived, workers led them to a small room, where Key Clubbers signed-in and picked up their name tags. After that, the food bank workers separated the members into groups and took them into different rooms. These rooms were filled with different items in an attempt to make sorting easier. The first room I was taken to was the room dedicated to bread sorting. There, we had to separate non-sweet bread from sweet bread. Often, the

After we finished sorting the bread, we were taken into another room. This room consisted of different types of drinks, varying from water to soda; baby food items, varying from juice to powdered milk; and toddler snacks, varying from dried foods to canned items. We had to wash off the products with water and a rag to insure that they were as clean as possible before being handed out in our community. We were also given boxes. We had to fill each with 42 pounds of drinks and baby food items. Once all of the boxes were filled up, we stacked them in a crate to prepare them for future transport in various locations. After all the products had been packed up, we cleaned up the area and were free to go! Helping sort food at Tarrant Area Food Bank was a nice experience because it made me feel good knowing that I had assisted the community. I can’t wait until I can do this again!
