Editor’s Corner: Hello Key Club! I hope you’re all doing well in school and don’t forget to keep volunteering! -Kelly Le, Editor.
Bicyclists are preparing for the race at the annual Cowtown Classic!
Hello everyone!
I hope everyone is doing good with school so far! Managing both school and cub activities can be difficult, so it’s best to try to balance those things out. Don’t forget to sign up for Remind101 to be informed about new events!
Yours in service, NCKC President

COWTOWN CLASSIC
Article by: Elizabeth Rodriguez
While outside, we waited for the bikers to finish the ride and cheered all of them on! We shouted out positive cheers and held up the posters we’ve made. The posters consisted of encouraging messages for the bikers as they race through the streets. One poster said, “Go bicyclists!” while another said, “You can do it!” Once everybody finished, we allowed the posters to dry down a bit. During that period, most of us headed outside to cheer on the bikers as the race was near ending. While we did this, some decided to stay inside to clean up a bit. Cowtown Classic is an annual bicycle race in which Kiwanis raise money for Key Club. It was held on Saturday, September 10th from 5 A.M. to 1 P.M. We (the volunteers) had to be there at 5 in the morning to help set up. This event was double hours, so every hour actually counted as two.

UCC MOBILE FOOD PANTR
Article by: Kelly Le
RY
On Saturday, September 24th, Yerasly and I attended the UCC Mobile Food Pantry. This event was located at the United Community Wesley Center. Volunteers were expected to be there at 8:30 a.m. So when we arrived at that time, we were expecting to help set up and get the event started. However, much to our surprise, the event already started and everybody was in full work mode! To my left, I saw lots of volunteers already there. There were some with shopping carts helping the people carry their food while others were handing out food. They had tables laid out and tons of food ready. They even formed an assembly line to hand out food, which made the process much easier. On the other hand, I saw a long line of people waiting to receive food. Some had plastic bags that were handed out by volunteers while others brought their own. The people were eager to be there, and I couldn’t wait to help them. Before we could volunteer, we had to sign in. So we made our way into the building and signed in at the front desk. They gave us
a badge that said “volunteer” and told us to find Ms. Angela who will assign us work. When we found her, we were assigned to hand out ham croquette. There were other volunteers on each side of us. To my right was a lady who handed out different kinds of bread and next to Yerasly was a lady who handed out juice boxes. There were tons of people, so we were kept busy for quite a while. Seeing the different faces of people and being able to help them made me realize how much I love volunteering. It reminded me how fortunate I am to be here, and I wouldn’t trade this for anything else! After a while of being at the food pantry, we noticed our fellow Key Club members, Johnny, Rich, and Yajaira. I was ecstatic to a see familiar faces at the event! Johnny and Rich took on the job of discarding empty boxes while Yajaira helped people with carrying their food. Shortly after, other members arrived! This time was Harrison, Kat, and Genesis. Genesis helped with carrying the people’s bags, Harrison discarded trashes, and Kat helped handing out food. The event eventually died down at around 10:30 and it was time to clean up. Even though we handed out a lot of food, there were still some left. The leftovers were put into storage so some items can be reusable next time. I was deeply content participating in this event. It made me realize that I love volunteering! I love helping people and to know that I’m capable of contributing to those in needs brings me great joy. I cannot wait to do this again!

MUMS & GARTERS
we would staple a black ribbon to the back; and for the white ribbons, we’d staple a blue ribbon to the back. Unfortunately, we had to go back and put more ribbons on there because the five that we had were not enough. So Johnny and I put on random ribbons as symmetrically as possible and it still came out looking amazing! As a club, we made a total of almost 25 mums and garters to handout on Friday. It’s senior year and homecoming is right around the corner. Mums and garters are huge accessories for homecoming. So huge that some people would spend the whole night trying to make one! Well, what about the kids that are unable to make one? That’s where Key Club comes in! We spend one day after school a couple of days before homecoming to make a mum or garter for every special needs senior. This is the first time I participated in this event, and it was also the first time I’ve made a garter! I’ve got to say, I thought it was going to be difficult making a garter, but it was actually pretty easy. The only problem I encountered was with the glue gun. I burned myself several times because it was so hot! Johnny and I were set out to make the most good-looking garter ever. We decided for each ribbon have a background color, so to speak. For example, for the black ribbon, we would staple a gold ribbon to the back; then for the blue ribbons,
When Friday came and it was time to hand them out, Yerasly, Tina, and I went during first period to the four special needs classes that had seniors and it was heartwarming. These seniors’ faces lit up when we said that we had mums and garters for them. They were extremely eager to get one and was overjoyed when they got theirs! This is what Key Club is about: making the day of another person and doing something for them that they will never forget. At the same time, you are doing something that you will never forget. Making mums and garters for the special needs seniors for the first time this year made me regret not participating in it last year. But then again, I’m glad I did it in the first place, and I hope that when I leave, mums and garters will forever be a North Crowley Key Club tradition that will last forever.

Article by: Brian Tran Grace Lutheran Fall Festival was my favorite event in September. It was a local festival and since it was my first time going, I didn’t really know what to expect. It was held on September 17th from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. North Crowley Key Club was given a booth to create a game for the kids. Our exciting game was balloon darts. The kids’ goal was to successfully hit balloons with 3 darts and they would receive a prize at the end. Of course, it was pretty dangerous if you were sitting behind the darts as you could get hit if a kid missed. However, most of the kids’ aims were pretty good, so I was saved from the pointy darts! There was also a range of kids who, no matter how hard they tried, just could not hit the balloons. Even so, that did not deter us from giving them a prize! A for effort, right? I greatly enjoyed this game because I was able to interact with the kids. Also, seeing their faces lit up when I handed out their prizes was a joy to see. The prizes included candies and small toys. Besides giving out prizes, I was also tasked with pumping balloons and setting up the game. Luckily, I didn't have to pump the balloons all by

hands, for I had a machine that could pump balloons for me. Therefore, I was able to finish it quickly. During our break, Alvin, Sandy, and I decided to tour the festival. There were tons of other booths there! I even won a Frisbee when I correctly answered an environmental science question! Besides the different booths, there were also live music performances and square dance. I would’ve participated in the dance but was too embarrassed since the last time I danced was in fourth grade. After a while of participating in other booths and not winning prizes, we had to go to Walmart to purchase more prizes for our booth, which was a fun experience on its own. Even though I had to leave early, I greatly enjoyed my time here. We had an amazing turnout for our club that day! Overall, I loved these festival events because of the fun and light atmosphere it has. Also, I’ve always enjoyed helping kids in some way, so these festival events was a perfect opportunity for me to do that!
