FROM THE EDITOR

IT WAS PARTY TIME at photographer Nancy Nolan’s studio as our creative team, special projects editor Laura LaRue and art director Mandy Keener, geared up for our photography sessions for this issue. The room was ďŹ lled with festive decor, owers, cakes and beautiful dresses, all the elements of a great party, as well as a great wedding. By the time we bring these items to the studio, we’ve planned, coordinated, searched and scheduled all the details for months, and seeing everything come together in one place can be both nerve-wracking and gratifying, but ultimately, fun, much like a wedding. And we’ve coordinated and tended to it all in order to offer you inspiration for your big day. Inspiration is our mission, and we offer ideas more ways than ever before. Visit weddingsinarkansas.com and you’ll ďŹ nd both a digital edition of this magazine (with extra features not seen in our print edition) and our blog, where you can: -See real Arkansas weddings, ďŹ nd project ideas, view the latest color trends and more -Discover wedding resources and access them directly through links -Share ideas easily with family and friends -Link to our Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest pages Enjoy the party as you ip through these pages, and then ďŹ nd a daily dose of inspiration for your own celebrations.

The perfect day deserves the perfect space. The ideal venue for everything from your rehearsal dinner to your reception. :HVW 0RXQWDLQ ‡ ‡ ZZZ WZQFHQWHU FRP

REAL WEDDINGS

Nicole Stec

&

Zac Phillips JUNE 18, FORT SMITH ELEGANTLY INSPIRED BY NATURE with a splash of tradition is how Nicole describes their wedding day, and it was filled with family and friends. “I spent most of the previous eight years away at school, so it was great to spend so much time with my family,” she says. Details Weddings & Events coordinated Nicole and Zac’s big day as a stress-free way to keep the emphasis on fun and family.

<

VINTAGE STYLE

CLEVER KEYS Custom touches included a craft-store initial and a vintage typewriter to display the couple’s rings.

NEWLY WED

<

PURPLE POWER The bridesmaids wore a variety of purple dresses while groomsmen sported purple ties, setting the color palette for the event.

<

“I’m a bit nostalgic and wanted to honor all of the women who have been so important in our lives,” says Nicole. “So I decided to display everyone’s dresses. It was a bit of a challenge to find that many dress forms!”

Nicole wore a Priscilla of Boston gown, to which she added length to the train. What was on Nicole’s mind as she walked down the aisle? “I think it was mostly disbelief that we were finally actually married,” she says.

< <

<

LIGHT BRIGHT Lanterns and violet floral arrangements adorned the reception tables. “I was going for elegant, but natural and woodsy. We wanted everyone to enjoy themselves and to be comfortable,” says Nicole.

SUMMER FRESH Tanarah Luxe Floral & Event Styling created a bouquet of summery flowers nestled inside tree branches, a look Nicole describes as “unique, earthy and beautiful.” Purple stock, pink roses and greenery placed in simple jars tied with twine adorned the tables.

REAL WEDDINGS

Payton Rosenzweig

&

Robert Bridewell Jr.

AUGUST 27, FAYETTEVILLE FOR THE BIG DAY, Payton wore a crown of blossoms as a headpiece rather than a traditional veil. The couple chose a sunset, outdoor wedding ceremony overlooking the Ozarks, accentuating the evening with simple, romantic details. “It was wonderful and precious, and it turned out to be everything I had dreamed,” says Payton.

<

PICTURE PERFECT

<

TRIO TIME

<

Payton took photos with her bridesmaids before the wedding, with the bridal party selecting their own dresses in shades of white or cream.

“Both of my parents walked me down the aisle,” says Payton. “That’s something I’ve always envisioned and it was a personal touch to our day.”

The wedding took place at the family home of Payton’s maid of honor. “We wanted it to be really simple because the setting is so idyllic, looking over the mountains,” says Payton. “There were even deer in the field during the ceremony.”

<

GARDEN GALA

<

Robert surprised Payton with his great-grandmother’s ring when he proposed. Both wedding bands were custom made by Lauray’s The Diamond Center.

<

Payton and Robert opted for a large wedding party including family members and friends from both college and high school. Several hundred guests attended the event, which the outdoor location easily accommodated.

REAL WEDDINGS

Leanne Day

& Doug Simpson APRIL 9, HOT SPRINGS & LITTLE ROCK AS A VIOLINIST for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Leanne wanted to incorporate unique music into her elegantly styled wedding day. She selected Broadway tunes, which musician friends played as she and Doug exchanged vows at Garvan Woodland Gardens, and a lively jazz trio serenaded the Capital Hotel reception. “It matched the mood of the event perfectly,” says Leanne.

<

SPRING STYLE

PEACOCK PROUD

<

Leanne’s lace and beaded off-the-shoulder gown from The Bridal Cottage combines both vintage and modern styling. “I love the sleek, figure-hugging fit, the lace panels on the sides and the one-shoulder look,” she says. Each bridesmaid carried a different bouquet of white flowers, such as freesia, calla lilies and tulips, while Leanne’s bouquet included a combination of all of them, plus peacock feathers.

The cake design was based on a stained-glass peacock that Doug’s mother and Leanne found in a Hot Springs store while searching for venues. The stained glass quickly became the wedding’s design basis and was displayed at the reception near the cake.

<

ELEGANT ACCENTS Family members helped Leanne find elements and compose the centerpieces, which included apothecary jars and vases filled with flowers and trimmed with ribbons. The regionally inspired reception menu included specialties for which the Capital Hotel is well known, including Gulf shrimp with local Arkansas rice grits.

PAPER PRETTIES The wedding programs and placards continued the blue theme of the day, and were handmade by Leanne and her family. It was after first making the wedding invitations that she realized all the other printed materials would then have to match. “All in all, we were working on the paper items from nearly beginning to end,” Leanne says.

<

< ALL IN ORDER In addition to the traditional bride and groom’s cakes, guests enjoyed cupcakes decorated with the Simpson family crest. Attentive Capital Hotel staff stood ready and waiting to accommodate guests’ needs.

< UNDER MY UMBRELLA The parasols were a spur-of-the-moment purchase by Leanne’s father and added a final decorative touch of peacock blue.

REAL WEDDINGS

Melissa Wooten

&

Matthew Kalkbrenner

MAY 21, LITTLE ROCK

WHIMSICAL, VINTAGE AND ECLECTIC was Melissa and Matthew’s goal, creating a wedding day full of both charm and uniqueness, down to the last detail. “Our wedding day was the most surreal experience I’ve ever had,” Melissa says. “I never dreamed a wedding like this was possible. The whole day was amazing; we laughed, cried and laughed some more.”

< BLUSHING BRIDESMAIDS Melissa’s bridesmaids wore a variety of garden-party style dresses from J. Crew in shades in gray, selected as a soft accent pairing well with peach hues.

< FRAGRANT FLORALS

<

LAYERED LOOK

Instead of traditional flowers, Melissa opted for magnolia leaves, along with honeysuckle, hydrangeas, viburnum, roses and peonies.

The cake, by Donatello, incorporated a variety of vintage-inspired looks in Melissa’s chosen peach and white color palette.

<

HISTORIC HOUSE “Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to get married at the Terry House,” Melissa says of her vintage-style wedding. “It was a dream then and it came true for me now. It was the perfect backdrop for our day.” Lanterns and swags of magnolia and honeysuckle around the front door decorated the porch.

<

ELEGANT ESCORT A vintage 1940 Cadillac brought Melissa to the Terry House, where her father and brother greeted and escorted her to the front porch to meet the groom.

< PRETTY PEARLS <

GARDEN PARTY To continue the vintage theme for the reception, the couple added antique tables and chairs placed on rugs to create small seating areas around the lawn.

Melissa wanted a simple yet unique dress, and she fell in love with the detailing of this one. She complemented the wedding’s vintage theme with a simple netting veil. Her brother, Tyler, custom designed a string of family pearls with a diamond clasp, embellished with diamonds from a variety of family pieces.

REAL WEDDINGS

Deanne Turner

&

Joe Warren JUNE 18, CONCORD WORKING AS A FULL-TIME EVENT PLANNER, Deanne had already used what would become her own wedding venue several times for private dinners and parties. “Arkansas doesn’t showcase landscapes like this, so I knew it would be a jaw-dropper the moment my guests arrived,” she says. What’s more, Joe surprised Deanne with a horse-drawn, vintage carriage to take them to the reception. “I had no idea, and the shock is evident in all the photos,” she says. “The moment was priceless.”

<

WE’RE JAMMIN’ “Our wedding was what the South is all about, so nothing was too formal or stuffy,” says Deanne. “We invited our guests to wear their ‘country best’ and served up hamburger sliders and mac and cheese. Guests were even given a jar of homemade strawberry jam to take home at the end of the night.”

<

<

BOLD HUES “I wanted my bouquet to look effortless and I think my cousin Ryan (ryanlawson.com) did a phenomenal job,” says Deanne. The bouquet included red and yellow sunflowers, succulents, Belles of Ireland, protea and fern fronds. For the floral arrangements, Deanne wanted a “really organic but vibrant selection,” she says, which included assorted shades of dahlias.

<

TOUCHING TIES Deanne found many of the wedding-day items on etsy. com, including these ties she tea-stained herself and then had monogrammed for both Joe and her father at a local shop in Batesville.

BASIC BLACK Deanne opted for classic black dresses for the bridal party, adorned with colorful accents. “Most women have a little black dress hanging in their closets at all times, so I knew it would cut down on their costs,” she says. For her own dress, she opted for a lace, one-shoulder style and added a belt.

PIE PALACE Deanne and Joe opted for assorted pies and strawberry/blueberry cake donuts. “We were able to please more taste buds this way!” she says. The dessert table included a banner that read “Slice of Heaven” because, as Deanne says, “that’s exactly what it was, all 10 varieties. We cut a key lime pie as our ceremonial slice.”

<

Theresa Lincicome

Christopher Harrell

MAY 14, LITTLE ROCK ELEGANT SETTINGS AND SOFT HUES for dresses and flowers made the entire wedding day utterly romantic. “You hear people say all the time that their wedding day is the best day of their life,” Theresa says. “I didn’t really know what that meant until my day came. I was filled with joy the entire day!” 36 spring/summer weddings 2012

<

MEN IN BLACK With the wedding and reception held downtown, Little Rock street scenes were ideal for photo opportunities.

<

LACE LOOKS

<

THE HAPPY COUPLE

<

Long-time friend Kandace Gerber of Save the Date Designs matched all of the rose-colored details in both the programs and invitations to the lace in Theresa’s wedding gown.

Theresa wore an Aire Barcelona strapless dress and added a bow at the waist. She also pinned her great-grandmother’s brooch to it as a family tribute, and wore her aunt’s veil.

The mini chandeliers on the reception tables at the Arkansas Arts Center were a unique means of creating a warm, romantic atmosphere.

< TASTY TREATS

<

PRETTY IN PINK

CHIC SETTING

For dessert, Theresa wanted something easy to serve in a variety of flavors, so she opted for vanilla, chocolate and red velvet flavored cupcakes adorned with the couple’s monogram.

The bridesmaids used inspiration photos Theresa sent to them to each select her own dress, designed to fit into the soft and romantic color palette of the day. “It didn’t feel right to put them all in the same dress and not let their personal style show,” says Theresa.

<

ROSY HUES For the bridesmaids' bouquets, Theresa wanted a lush but soft look. She shared several bouquet images with Tanarah Luxe Floral & Event Styling and they chose seasonal flowers to fit the look. Theresa’s advice? “Select vendors whom you trust and allow them to work their magic!”

< MIX IT UP At the end of the day, guests took home jars of waffle mix since Christopher’s father runs the Waffle House locations throughout the state. “We love Waffle House, and it’s a part of our lives, so we wanted to share it with our guests,” says Theresa.

Rebecca Hatfield

David Walton

JULY 16, SEARCY THE SUMMER WEDDING of Rebecca and David was filled with vibrant hues of Kelly green, royal purple and tangerine orange as a tribute to the bride’s love of color. Rebecca envisioned a whimsically elegant setting and used the mix of colors to create a light-hearted mood. “People told me the wedding looked just like me, and that made me feel that I had been true to myself,” she says. 38 spring/summer weddings 2012

< TWINKLE TOES All the bridesmaids chose their own style of shoes with only a few color guidelines. “The more outrageous, the better!” says Rebecca, a shoe aficionado.

< CUSTOM CREATIONS

<

VINTAGE STYLE

Shannon Jeffery of KatEva Designs made custom bracelets for the bridesmaids by mixing beads and antique pieces from a plethora of other jewelry, all in Rebecca’s palette of bright green, purple, orange and pink.

The couple chose a black vintage car from Vintage Motorcars in Mayflower for their getaway. “It was a surreal feeling being in the car and realizing ‘we’re married!’” says Rebecca.

<

SATIN CHIC Rebecca's Alvina Valenta dress from Proposals featured eggshell satin with a box-pleated strapless neckline and side pockets. The wide ruched band at the empire waist was accented with jeweled floral details and pinned with a brooch belonging to the bride’s maternal grandmother.

<

SWEET SOUNDS Music was an integral part of the occasion, since David is a professional singer. The groom’s cake featured a copy of the song he wrote for the proposal.

<

FLORAL FLAIR Rebecca’s bouquet continued the bright-hued color scheme and consisted of royal purple hydrangeas, orange and hot pink gerbera daisies, green mums, tangerine roses, lime green hypericum berries and small pink spray roses. The colorful assortment of flowers carried over to the cake as well.

AFTER MONTHS OF PLANNING the ceremony and reception, Kendra describes the big day as very calm and relaxed—which is exactly how she wanted it. Although the event was traditional in style, Kendra mixed in fresh twists whenever possible. “I tried to do some different things,” says Kendra, “but I didn’t want to look at pictures in 50 years and wonder what we were thinking. When it was all said and done, we had the feeling that it was a perfect fit for us.” 40 spring/summer weddings 2012

<

Purple passion Since purple is Kendra’s favorite color, she incorporated it into the wedding palette, but kept it subdued by using different shades of the hue and adding green to the mix. Kendra chose the bridesmaids’ dresses after spotting them in a magazine, and was even more amazed when she saw them in person. “I wanted something fun that looked good on everyone,” says Kendra.

<

<

memorable moment As Kendra and her father walked down the aisle, she told herself to “walk slowly and take it all in—remember the moment,” she says.

<

cozy candlelight

Kendra’s ruched wedding gown was the first one she tried on, and she bought it that very day. The gown’s layered train was the inspiration for the elegantly detailed wedding cake, created by Tasty Cakes.

The couple, who began dating while Kendra attended law school in New Orleans, worked closely with Justin’s cousin, Jessica Zimmerman, owner of A Southern Tradition, to give the reception a New Orleans courtyard feel with wrought iron and candlelight.

Kendra wrapped her bouquet with leftover fabric from her dress and secured it with a locket that belonged to her grandmother. Photos of her grandmother and grandfather were inside the locket. “It was a way for me to make them a part of the day, even though they weren’t there,” says Kendra.

Justin and his groomsmen wore Paul Morrell tuxedos and classic white boutonnières.

< timeless touch <

< ELEGANT ATTIRE

Tables surrounding the dance floor featured flowers arranged in ball vases as well as candles. “I wanted to replicate the feeling you get while spending an evening in a New Orleans courtyard,” says Kendra.

Courteney Booy

AUGUST 13, MOUNTAIN HOME

COURTENEY AND ANDREW’S CLASSICALLY ELEGANT wedding in Mountain Home was full of summertime details, including all-white accents and a chic strapless dress which Courteney describes as “love at first fit.” 42 spring/summer weddings 2012

<

COOL COLORS

<

CLASSIC CONFECTION

“We wanted to incorporate color, but in a soft way,” Courteney says of the blue and purple palette she’s always loved. “The blue was airy, fun and sweet, while the purple was a little more bold and romantic.”

LIGHTING LOVE

<

As a cake aficionado, Courteney made sure that the cake tasted as good as it looked. She opted for a white-on-white classic design with hydrangea accents for floral flair.

Paper lanterns were suspended from the reception hall ceiling to add soft lighting for a romantic ambience plus a pop of whimsical color.

<

ELEGANT ACCENTS Ribbon-adorned wedding programs continued the soft blue color palette and the classic, elegant style.

SIMPLY SOUTHERN Courteney’s grandmother made blackberry and blueberry jam, and Andrew’s mother made strawberry jam, which guests took home as favors in fabric-covered jars.

MEMORABLE MOMENT Both the ceremony and the reception were held at Mountain Homes' First Assembly of God church. Courteney describes the moment standing at the altar as feeling "overwhelmed with the truest happiness."

<

<

< FLORAL FUN Courteney’s all-white bouquet included a mix of hydrangeas, freesia, roses and lisianthus, while the bridesmaids’ bouquets were a combo of blue hydrangeas, purple freesia and purple lisianthus.

< VINTAGE VIBE The couple drove away in Courteney’s grandfather’s blue 1963 Ford Thunderbird. “Andrew loves classic cars and my grandpa has this wonderful Thunderbird, which he was happy to let us use for our grand exit,” says Courteney.

Darron Pitchford

MAY 14, LITTLE ROCK LONDON AND DARRON’S WEDDING day was full of pure happiness and sunshine yellow, as the couple tied the knot in a romantic ceremony with vintage accents and unique details. London enjoys planning and one of her favorite parts was hashing out all the details with her mother. “We had so much fun together!” she says.

44 spring/summer weddings 2012

< FUN WITH FRIENDS “My bridesmaids and I had a great time,” says London. After brunch, the bridal party dressed for the event in a suite at The Peabody hotel. “It was great to relax and laugh together,” adds London.

< BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET

<

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

A mix of yellow and white peonies, roses and orchids filled the bride’s bouquet, arranged by Lauren Frost, a family friend.

TABLESCAPES

<

For the big day, London wore a lace Enzoani gown from Proposals. At the altar, the couple exchanged rings from Sissy’s Log Cabin.

For the reception, London used a mix of orchids, roses and hydrangeas, placing them in vintage vases she gathered from shops around the state. Favor boxes were filled with mini wedding cakes.

<

DESSERT DELIGHT London was referred to Julie Wakley of Mena for the couple’s cakes. “She made beautiful cakes that were also very tasty,” says London. The chocolate groom’s cake was topped with chocolatecovered strawberries.

< LEMON LOVE

<

FESTIVE FLORAL The bridesmaids’ bouquets continued the yellow, gold and ivory color palette, and included peonies, roses and orchids to mirror the bride’s.

Using magazine photos as inspiration, Julie Wakley of Mena helped London decide on a lace-inspired, multi-tiered cake with alternating layers of white cake and lemon curd.

SWEET SURPRISE

<

Courtney’s bridesmaids selected their own dresses “so they could be comfortable and feel like themselves,” she says. “I gave them our color scheme and it came together so nicely.” Courtney’s flirty footwear complemented the pale pink color palette.

Courtney’s grandfather surprised her with a group of beautiful white birds on the big day, and the couple released them into the air after saying their vows.

<

DASHING DESIGN Courtney discovered the cake design in a magazine and took the photo directly to Rick’s Bakery. Keeping with tradition, the couple saved the top tier for their first anniversary.

< BEAUTIFUL BRIDE <

Peonies were the stars of Courtney’s pink and white bouquet, complementing a simply stylish dress with a classic sweetheart neckline. Her flower girl carried a sign coordinating with the pink and brown color palette.

< SOUTHERN CHIC

PERFECT PINK

<

The event took place at Fayetteville’s Pratt Place Inn, with the ceremony occurring outside the barn and the reception held inside.

“I liked the idea of having some color, but I didn’t want it take away from the simplicity I had in mind, so pale pink fit just right,” says Courtney. Mini jute-edged chalkboards served as placards, while additional pink and white peonies continued the floral theme.
