Some of our fineSt art captureS colorado’S hiStory and noStalgia. and SometimeS it’S heart.
It starts with a blank canvas. It finishes as a color-
ful, historic memory. In between, artist Lee Reedy captures the essence and magic of Colorado with oils, brushes, passion, craftsmanship, and a particular fondness for detail. The result is one of many meaningful expressions you’ll find on exhibit here at Elements 5280. Our gallery walls dance with vivid colors from Colorado artists, whose pieces touch the heart of our great state.

A Not-So-Secret Love Affair Award Winning Design Firm
I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE. Well, not so much a confession as an outright exclamation: I am an art junkie. Those who know me already understand my passion. I love to view it, learn about it and, of course, buy it. Whenever I travel out of town or out of the country, I hit as many galleries and museums as humanly possible. However, I really don’t have to travel very far to get a good art fix: Colorado’s vibrant and ever-growing arts community allows me enjoy fabulous art to my heart’s content, with a plethora of exciting galleries, renowned museums and lively art festivals. Needless to say, I’m in heaven during these summer months, when we are in the thick of art-festival season. So I’m thrilled to present this year’s Art & Antique Issue. It’s always so fun to find beautiful homes that are filled with incredible art, and fascinating to listen to homeowners talk with great passion about their collections. And the homeowners in this issue certainly have passion. One couple even built a home with the specific intention of showcasing their contemporary art collection. We’re also honored to share stories about two important personalities in the Colorado arts scene: painter Monroe Hodder (I’ve coveted her work for years) and Terry Adams, president and CEO of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, I’d love to hear about your summer art adventures. What festivals have you attended? What new artists did you discover? Feel free to drop me a note at mabel@coloradohomesmag.com or leave a comment on our Facebook page (/CHLMagazine). I’m always happy to promote our wealth of artistic talent. Cheers,

There is wealth. And then there is a life lived richly. What’s truly important? Family. Friends. The more you invest in those, the higher the return. Real assets aren’t a tally sheet of numbers. They are tangible. A community that increases your connection to the great outdoors. A home that multiplies the ways your family comes together. A place like that? Well, that would be worth investing your time to find out more.

Color Story
Shades of
Gray
Vanderbilt Velvet pillows and Tribeca Ottoman by Mary McDonald for Schumacher, fschumacher.com
Interior designer Mary McDonald shares her tips for working with the new neutral “GRAY HAS BEEN AROUND forever,” says Los Angeles-based interior designer and author Mary McDonald, explaining its appearance in nature (think slate and marble) as well as mid-century Scandinavian design. More recently, the ongoing popularity of stainless steel appliances and silver hardware and fixtures make the color gray a shoo-in for today’s home. McDonald’s new collection of fabrics and trims for Schumacher (available at the Denver Design District showroom) shows plenty of gray, beautifully complemented with vibrant colors such as pink, orange and aquamarine. “It’s easy to use gray as a grounding color,” says the designer, who suggests using lighter, silvery tones with white or ivory for a more traditional look. To go clean and contemporary, try dark, charcoal shades with bold, high-contrast accents. McDonald also insists on trying out several shades before choosing, especially for large areas such as walls and floors. “Gray can look purple or mauve depending on the light. I would keep it cooler, with blue or black undertones.”

The Queen of COLOR GANSTA PARADISE, 2012, 52” X 44”, OIL ON CANVAS
Monroe Hodder’s vibrant paintings pulse with life—thanks in part to the inspiration she finds in Steamboat’s quiet beauty. Find out why the artist calls Colorado home, how she understands color and why she paints

CH&L: Did you always want to be an artist? How did this happen?
Monroe Hodder: I painted and drew like all children do, and I had sort of special little gifts for it when I was younger. The real moment for me was when my husband and I went to Amsterdam one summer to work. Well, he went to work and I went to paint. It was our anniversary, and he gave me this bowl of yellow roses. I painted and painted them. When he came home from work, I said, “What are you doing home so soon?” I had totally lost my sense of time. I had no feeling that a whole day had passed me by. That was 40 years ago. I still have that feeling when I’m painting. Through better and worse, making art has stayed with me. There have been some times when I’ve thought, ‘Why did I do this as a career?’ It’s hard to be an artist, but it’s very, very satisfying. You live in New York and Steamboat Springs. What drew you to Steamboat?
That has to do with the fact that I’m still married to the same man for whom I painted those flowers. He grew up in Colorado and Wyoming, and skiing is...perhaps it is the love of his life, or a close second! We’ve only been here about seven years, and I’ve come to love Colorado. COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

And do you paint here?
I would say that I do most of my work here. I have a very big studio not too far from my home. I can just drive over there and get completely lost in work with no distractions whatsoever. That doesn’t happen in New York. There are always people visiting and art shows to see and that kind of thing. But there’s also a kind of energy in New York that’s very good for my painting.
THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY, 2010, 52” X 44”, OIL ON CANVAS
I read a review that says your most powerful language is color. You’re like Matisse! What draws you to color?

COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM
Color is not just pretty. It’s a vehicle of expression for all my emotions. I had a very sad trip to New York to see someone who is sick. And in the show [this spring at the William Havu Gallery in Denver], the painting I made after that visit was hanging right next to a painting about a rafting trip down the Colorado River. Color is the way I was able to describe both of those experiences. Your paintings certainly reveal emotion. They almost vibrate with it. Do you know what a painting will become, what it will say, when you begin it?
More often than not, I don’t know what a painting will become. I have this feeling and desire to do this painting. It sounds a little silly, but there’s also a will of the painting itself that takes over. It kind of molds itself, and at a certain

point I just have to follow along. It’s as though the painting becomes so real that it expresses its own being. Those are my best paintings, when the painting takes over and becomes what it wants. When did you begin painting these bold stripes of color that characterize your recent work?
When I came to Steamboat. I went to drop someone off at the airport, and there’s this beautiful road along the Yampa River with these little bits of color, and I thought, ‘I just have to express this winter beauty.’ That was my very first stripe painting. Your work makes me think you’re a happy person. Is that true?
NEW YORK CROSSTOWN, 2011, 72” X 64”, OIL ON CANVAS
CRAZY LOVE, 2012, 52” X 44”, OIL ON CANVAS
I was wondering about that myself. I looked at one of my paintings recently, and I thought, ‘Only a person who experiences joy could have painted that.’ I believe very strongly in certain values—love, generosity, joy, forgiveness—and because I believe in those values, even though I’m not always happy, they are what I want to communicate. You know, there’s a lot of physical and mental struggle in getting your work done and into the world. My husband once said to me, ‘Are you sure you want to put up with all this? You could just be taking a walk.’ And it’s true. But my work is kind of like my gift to the world. It’s essential to me to give that gift.

Terry Adams President and CEO of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival
BY HILARY MASELL OSWALD
PHOTOGRAPHY
TERRY ADAMS HAS A REQUEST: he’d like a retractable roof over all of Denver’s Cherry Creek North shopping district. “I suppose that’s not possible,” he laughs. “But believe me: I’ve wished for it.” You can’t blame him. As the leader of the non-profit that produces the hugely popular Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Adams spends 362 days of the year preparing for the three-day extravaganza, which takes place July 5, 6 and 7 this year. And each year, as the festival days approach, “I watch the weather like crazy,” he says. “It’s wild to look toward something all year and know that success depends, at least partially, on something you can’t control.” It’s a good thing Adams is unflappable, the kind of guy who knows how to keep the big picture in mind while he tends to the

details. Now in his 12th year as the festival’s leader, he has a job description that varies depending on the day of the week. Sometimes he’s securing the corporate sponsorships that bolster the festival’s offerings; other times, he’s managing the extensive logistics that come with working with the city and hundreds of shop owners in Cherry Creek North. And on the day after the festival ends, he’s up at sunrise with his team, combing the streets of the chic shopping district with trash bags to make sure there’s no trace of the festival anywhere. “It a job for a generalist leader,” Adams says. “I know a little bit about a lot of things.” That’s an understatement. Adams’ resumé suggests that he may have been training for this gig his whole professional life. He earned a degree in accounting from the University of Arizona, and his
first job was as a cast director for Up with People, the non-profit educational organization that takes college students and young adults all over the world to perform musical productions and serve the communities they visit. Adams performed with the group during an extended break from college and accepted a job after graduation. He met his wife there and together, they spent six years on the road; Adams worked in the organization’s headquarters for an additional nine. “It gave me such a solid background,” he says. “You’re working with different cultures, different personalities. You’re helping people understand a shared vision. You’re adjusting to surprises. Sometimes you’re performing in high-school gyms, sometimes in high-end theaters. You learn to problem-solve. I loved it. But once we had kids, kissing babies in the
WE WERE JUST WONDERING... What would you do if you didn’t have this job? I have a passion for university athletics—promoting their advancement, fundraising, developing sponsorships. It’s a calling I never pursued, but maybe that’ll be my final act. I’m a huge sports fan. Do you have any artistic ability? I can’t say I do. I’m a pianist and vocalist. But when it comes to visual art, Canvas and Cocktails is about all I can pull off. What’s the last great book you read? I just finished reading All In by Chester Elton—a great book that reminded me how important an organization’s culture is to its success. When you find time to unwind in Denver, where do you go? When I have the time, my greatest getaway is the golf course. There are so many great ones to choose from in this region.

crib and then going to the airport got old.” He and his family moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he served as the development director for a Catholic school. He planned to raise his family there. Then a phone call from a former Up with People board member, who was a founding board member for the arts festival, led him to Denver and a job that gets bigger—and more fun, Adams insists—every year. As anyone who has been there knows, the festival is a big deal; it regularly ranks among the top five outdoor arts festivals in the country. It brings in as many as 350,000 visitors, who buy $2.6 million in work from 250 artists. A culinary tent hosts chefs who demonstrate their skills to standing-room-only crowds. An impressive line-up of regional musicians adds to the festive spirit, and kids’ crafts tents give families a break from the sun. And new this year, mega-gym Life Time Fitness is hosting 5K and 10K runs for women, called Esprit de She, that will end at Fillmore Plaza, the heart of the festival. But the focus is always on the visual arts component first, and though he’d never say it, the festival’s recent success is due in large part to Adams’ clear vision. He’s sensitive to the artists’ experience, and always mindful of the fact that they drive their vans, loaded with their work, hundreds or thousands of miles to set up their tents and sit in the sun for three days. “We work hard to treat them well,” he says. “We make their lives as easy as we can while they’re here.” It’s a vision that has served the festivalgoers well, too. “The cool thing about this event is that it offers something to the experienced art collector, but it can also be someone’s first chance to buy a piece of artwork,” Adams says. “You get hooked. You get addicted to that experience.” And lucky for Adams, that’s a feeling no fickle Colorado weather can ever wash away.
Why the Arts Festival Matters Year-Round Cherry Creek Arts Festival is a non-profit with a mission to take the arts into area schools. The organization’s Mobile Art Gallery travels the seven-county metro area—and occasionally treks up into the mountains— offering arts exhibitions in schools. The program trains upperclassmen to serve as docents, who then take the rest of the students through the exhibition. They learn about the materials, process and inspiration for each piece. “As arts programs get cut, the gallery might be the only experience students have with visual arts all year,” Adams says.

THE FUN & FUNKY
Dancing Bear
Dancing Bear, Aspen’s super-chic residence club, redefines mountainmodern style

FUNKY MOUNTAIN STYLE doesn’t have to be complicated or pricey. Try a few of these designer tips to bring this look home: Make small changes for big impact. “Just buying new pillows or other small accessories with bright, fun colors and designs can quickly update a room,” Smith says. Embrace the Darkness. This lobby has very little natural light; Smith used the darkness to her advantage by choosing warm, rich colors and textures. “It’s the perfect environment for après ski after a cold day on the mountain,” Smith says. Take a big idea and scale it down. Larger commercial spaces can handle dramatic, oversized pieces, but homeowners can get the same feel on a smaller scale. “The checkerboard floor may be hard to live with every day,” says Jacobs, “so bring in a smaller dose of the same pattern through artwork or accessories.” Modernize the “mountain” look. “If you have amazing mountain views right outside your door, why do you need pictures of mountains inside?” asks Smith. “Go with abstract art instead. And if you must have that antler chandelier, update it with black or red lacquer.”
DAVID MARLOW
“I WANTED SOMETHING different for Aspen,” says Los Angeles-based designer Shayne Smith. “Modern, but not sleek.” That was the starting point for the lobby design at the Dancing Bear Aspen, a residence club in the heart of the upscale mountain town. When the owners gave Smith free reign on the look and feel of the new space, she, along with Yvonne Jacobs of Slifer Designs, jumped at the opportunity to create something that would set it apart from the other hotels in town. Inspired by European hotels that have that “funky, hip style with pieces that look like they’ve been collected over centuries,” Jacobs says that she and Smith took their cues from different time periods. The result is an eclectic mix of old and new, contemporary and western. The key, says Smith, is using traditional, organic materials and applying them in a modern way. Case in point: the sofa is traditional in shape, but rich chocolate velvet upholstery, yellow accent pillows and a faux-fur throw give it a modern edge. Same with the wall behind the desk–cowhide is quintessentially western, but dye it red and apply it to a wall and you have something fun and unique. And what about those amazing red floor lamps? “Not everyone likes them,” says Smith, “but they’re definitely conversation starters. Just as good art and design should be.”

Taking It Personally
Drawing on their travels and a deep love of furniture and art, Susan and John Gowen create a home that speaks of their personal history BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD
WHEN YOU LIVE IN A HOUSE that has seen its share of Colorado history—such as a home once owned by members of the Coors family—it’s important to put your own imprint upon it. Susan and John Gowen did just that when they renovated this 1940s Denver home in classic style. But that was just the beginning. 54
(above) Slipcovered pieces lend a comfortable, neutral backdrop to the mix of Chinese and French antiques in the family room. (left) Susan Gowen discovered the oil painting of the Buenos Aires San Telmo district at an antiques market in the South American city. She combines it with a bronze sculpture and a bowl of shells her sons collected on a recent trip to Mexico. The Japanese vase above was a wedding gift. (opposite) An acrylic painting, Old World, by local artist Mark Friday, hangs above a Chinese sideboard in the breakfast nook. “I especially love the shapes and colors in the painting,” Gowen says. “My sons, who are developing an appreciation for art, call it the spaceship painting.” On the sideboard is Norman Epp’s Stone Dancer, through Walker Fine Art. The Gowens commissioned the painting in the living room, Montmartre, from artist Betsy Eby, Winston Wächter Fine Art, New York.

What makes the two-story brick Georgian home truly theirs is the way the couple furnished it with rich, storied items, from the drop-leaf cherry table that Susan traded a dress for years ago, to the first pieces of furniture the couple bought together while living in Hong Kong, to artwork discovered at the Paris Flea Market. “I’m not an interior designer,” says Susan Gowen, although her experience as a photo editor and her degree in art history inform her decorating decisions. “I just buy the things I love and hope they work together. My home is all about simple furniture and great art.” The décor features eclectic furniture collected when the couple lived overseas and later when Gowen had a business importing antiques from southern France. They also shop Denver’s multitude of antiques shops, and are not afraid to mix styles and types of wood. Gowen is drawn to old, worn furniture—more interested in shape and texture than provenance. “I like strong pieces that (above) Gowen was drawn to the movement and colors in Vaporizing: Sublimatio II, an encaustic (wax) painting by artist Betsy Eby. A dainty French directoire-style walnut side table holds Gail Folwell’s sculpture, Meso Ecto Endo (through Walker Fine Art) and contrasts nicely with a hefty Chinese chest-turned-coffee table. (left) The kitchen is part of a new addition that includes the family room and master bedroom. The homeowners chose white subway tile backsplashes and honed black granite countertops for a clean, timeless look that fits the home’s vintage. (opposite) A French Louis Philippe walnut-and-pine game table has the worn character that Gowen loves. “I imagine all of the good times had at this table over the years,” she says. She bought the table and the Chinese elm Shanxi chairs at Eron Johnson Antiques in Denver. The painting, People of the World III, is by Janet McGreal, Aspen Art Gallery.

have a lot of character, that show their age,” Gowen says. With three little boys and pets running through the house, the furniture must be livable as well. “Nothing is off limits or too precious,” she says. A neutral palette of beige, white, cream and gray sets a serene backdrop for the interesting lines of the furniture. It also allows the artwork to enjoy a starring role. Passionate about art, Gowen will exclaim, “That’s my favorite painting,” in almost every room of the house. She collects primarily contemporary art, although she also favors mid-century European paintings. “I love beautiful shapes and forms and certain colors,” she says. “I bring color into my home with art. There is a little red in every room.” The Gowens seek out art galleries and antiques markets whenever they travel: “It makes a home more interesting and personal to showcase pieces that you’ve fallen in love with on a trip, whether a table from New Orleans or a painting from the Chelsea Flea Market in New York,” Gowen explains. couple also enjoys the flourishing Denver art scene in the Santa Fe arts district, the Student Art League of Denver, the Golden Triangle and the Highlands. “We have a house full of character because of our history and travels. We chose things we love and want to live with. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to find great art and furniture, either locally or internationally,” advises Gowen. “If you buy with your heart, it will always work in your home.”

CONCRETE FLOORS, steel accents and near-spartan furnishings—not quite what you’d expect to find within a neo-Craftsman home nestled near the foothills in North Boulder. “You expect one thing on the outside, but as soon as you see that entry door, you realize that you’re not in Kansas anymore,” says architect E.J. Meade, co-founder of Arch11 in Boulder. The home’s polished concrete floors are complemented by cementitious plaster on an accent wall in the living room. Architect E.J. Meade and his team had an oversized leather ottoman custom made for the space by Ackerman’s Furniture Workshops. The orange Arne Jacobsen Swan chair from Design Within Reach and Will Day’s acrylic painting, Integrity, are perfect counterpoints to the gray color scheme of the room. Mark Castator’s metal sculpture, Chanel, was purchased through Walker Fine Art, as was Jerry Wingren’s #7, from his “Resting Stones” series. The staircase, inspired by one the homeowner saw in a European design magazine, features floating wood treads anchored on steel risers, all encased in laminated glass. Known for his modern sensibility, Meade and project manager Claire Jordan were tasked with turning a half-built spec home with rugged board-and-batten siding into an ultra-modern, minimalist showpiece for a young couple and their two children. Via a sleek front door, the mountain-contemporary exterior now gives way to an open, airy, mostly monochromatic interior featuring polished concrete floors, bamboo finishes, exposed steel and aluminum-framed windows and pocket doors. The home expresses the wife’s vision of modern, uncluttered, efficient living with clean spaces that are perfect for displaying art. “As I studied design magazines and tried to figure out what gets me going, I quickly realized that I don’t like anything curved. I wanted straight edges everywhere,” she says. “I wanted angles, I wanted to see metal in the house. I wanted it to be almost industrial.” Her penchant for angles and simple surfaces is evident throughout the space. Meade opened up the floor plan, removing the majority of the ground floor’s partitions and lining much of the back wall with sliding glass doors. In the living room, a wide, rectangular fireplace floats in an accent wall coated with cement-based plaster above a streamlined white oak bench. There’s no mantel or hearth, preserving the wall’s lean lines and allowing the fireplace to serve as a functional art installation. In the kitchen, Meade designed custom cabinetry that flows almost seamlessly into the walls and conceals most of the appliances. Lacquered finishes mimic the reflective quality of the nearby wall of windows. He installed stainless-steel countertops to integrate the space into the home’s white-andgray palette and to provide a highly efficient, low-maintenance surface. Offsetting the space’s refined industrial vibe, Meade centered the room around a hefty, warmer-toned kitchen table. “The homeowners wanted the room to be spare and minimal, but the kitchen really is the center of their lives, so we created a modern farm table. It’s a four-by-nine-foot bamboo slab and it serves as their gathering place,” Meade says. The homeowners admire the German efficiency of bulthaup kitchens, so Meade designed flatfront, high-gloss custom cabinets that conceal most of the appliances, and installed functional and cost-efficient wrapped stainless steel countertops. Since the family spends a lot time together in the kitchen, Meade designed a “modern farm table,” a four-by-nine-foot bamboo slab. “It’s a monster—and we love it,” the wife says. The vertical wall art, Paul Ecke’s Patterns with a Purpose Q (through Space Gallery) adds a fun dose of color. Double Dot Bubble Bowls, by Scott Graham and Cristy Aloysi of Viscosity are available through PISMO Fine Art Glass. Cabinets by BKI Woodworks. Countertops by Broomfield Sheet Metal, Inc.

The true focal point of the home, though, is the staircase, a modern architectural sculpture with floating wood treads anchored on steel risers, all encased in laminated red glass—a significant dose of color in the home’s otherwise austere palette. Inspired by a photo in a European design magazine, the wife wanted the staircase to serve as the home’s primary source of visual interest. “Each time that I look at the staircase, it looks like a different color,” she says. “Sometimes it’s a deep red, while other times it’s almost fuchsia. And the way that the sunlight hits the glass, we frequently get these little prism effects with rainbows scattered across the floor. It warms up the whole room. “Given my desire for a simple white and gray palette everywhere else, my husband was worried that I’d get sick of all of that red, but I love it more every day.” Meade and his team custom-designed the dining table and flanked it with sculptural and airy Lucite chairs. “There’s no true head of the table because of its shape, so we like to think that the host’s chair is the lone clear one amid all of the green,” Meade says. Industrial Elements #10 by Paul Ecke adds drama to the back hall; on the buffet rests John Wood’s mixed media on paper, Gold Brocade Rolled Back. Atop the buffet is a steatite sculpture by Jerry Wingren.

The homeowners’ favorite painting, Dancers, by artist James Strombotne, sits on a piece of drywall specially designed to hold art on this concrete block fireplace. Hung higher than usual, the painting’s colors mirror the sky outside. Architect and designer Katherine Kiefer chose furnishings that are simple, sumptuous, and most importantly for this young family, comfortable.

GOOD CLIENTS MAKE AN ARCHITECT’S LIFE EASY.
Great clients remind an architect why he or she chose the profession in the first place. For Katherine Kiefer, owner of West Elevation Architects in Steamboat Springs, the owners of this house on a bluff overlooking a river fell into the latter category. “They called me from out of state one night after seeing one of my projects in a magazine,” says Kiefer. “They simply said, ‘You need to design our second home.’” There were a few specific directives: four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths. Otherwise, the main request was to create a home that highlighted the owners’ growing art collection. For Kiefer, who worked as an art curator before she became architect and designer, this was like winning the lottery.

The property, just outside of Steamboat Springs, was once an old ranch that had been subdivided into lots. The stunning views—the river, the ski area, the sunsets–seemed to dictate that the home be an elegant combination of rustic and contemporary materials. Kiefer chose maple cabinetry throughout, concrete floors (softened by area rugs), concrete blocks for the floor-toceiling fireplace and steel beams that still showed their foundry markings. The key was to create a tasteful but quiet background in order to frame the natural views and showcase great art. “The couple already a good collection of paintings when I first met them,” says Kiefer, “and as the house was being built, we talked back and forth about different artists and exhibitions. They narrowed down what they liked and purchased more pieces.” Kiefer’s advice to them (and all clients): if you find something you like

and you keep thinking about it, it’s meant to be yours. Don’t worry whether it matches your other art, or even your furnishings. If you love it, it will work. Kiefer designed expansive walls for specific works. Case in point: she specified an off-center piece of drywall on the concrete block fireplace for James Strombotne’s painting, Dancers, one of the clients’ favorites. Though Kiefer normally hangs pieces so the center point is 60 inches above the finished floor, this one works when hung a bit higher because it is off-center and picks up the colors of the Colorado sky outside both floor-to-ceiling windows. One of Kiefer’s challenges was to place all these dissimilar pieces of art (some representational, some abstract) and make them look as if they were conversing easily with each other. Her guiding light was a central design principle: look for repetitions in texture, color and shape. Let larger pieces stand alone. Place smaller pieces in more intimate spaces so viewers can get up close. “In a home like this,” she says, “if you’re not looking at the spectacular views, you’re looking at a spectacular piece of art. Everything needs to flow.” She and the homeowners were also not afraid to move pieces from their pre-planned places. Kurt Solmssen’s painting, Puget Sound, was originally placed in the master bedroom, but after Kiefer installed the customdesigned credenza in the dining room, opposite a window that looks out on the river, everyone decided the seaside picture was best in that room. Likewise, an Emilio Lobato painting now resides where an early 20thcentury French poster once hung. “After the couple purchased the Lobato,” Kiefer says, “it was obviously a better choice for this spot.” If art is meant to be a source of joy, this home delivers. So much so that the owners simply can’t leave: what was once considered a second getaway home is now their primary residence. What greater testimonial to the power of good art and architecture?
(opposite) A maple bed-and-side-table combination continues the focus on using simple, earthtoned elements throughout the house, which allows art like this trio by Hally Thacher, Nudes, to take center stage.

Villa Soul A carefully curated collection of Spanish Colonial art, reclaimed artifacts and storied antiques resides within the stucco walls of a Mediterranean home

EMILY MINTON REDFIELD
“MY FIRST LOVE IS SPANISH COLONIAL ART,” says Julie Anderies, an independent art historian and researcher whose declaration is no surprise to anyone who’s been inside her home. With the help of architect Jon Hindlemann, designer Stephen Kohlbeck and builder Bob Knepper, Julie and her husband Joe have created a uniquely personal home that showcases the couple’s enviable collection of art and antiques gathered over several decades of travel. Referencing the vernacular of traditional Spanish architecture, the home blends easily with the historic houses in and around Denver’s Observatory Park. “We love this neighborhood, and I’d always wanted to live in a home with a courtyard,” Anderies says. “When we found a rare double lot for sale here in 2006, we decided to buy it and scrape the existing house so we could build a new home that really suited us.” The couple had been friends with Jon Hindlemann for many years, and there was no question that he would be the architect. (opposite) A vintage door from Denver’s Eron Johnson Antiques opens into the entryway, where a reclaimed carved wood column was meticulously cut and wrapped around a steel support beam. “The home’s Old-World style really begins at the curb,” says Hindlemann. “We went to great lengths to remain true to a Mediterranean aesthetic, which in turn influenced the materials palette of stone and stucco, and the exterior details like the balcony, the arched windows, the rustic doors, the clay tile roof, and even the landscaping.” The 4,200-square-foot, four-bedroom home was designed around a central courtyard into which many of the main floor interior rooms open—including an office for Julie and a music room for Joe, a professional musician. Knepper Construction broke ground a year after the couple purchased the lot, and as the building progressed Hindlemann incorporated numerous vintage architectural elements into the home—many salvaged by La Puerta Originals of Santa Fe. Ancient gates showing vestiges of original turquoise paint lead to the entrance, and the foyer 76

We also have a friend who owns a gallery and loans us art on a rotating basis, which keeps things interesting.” When the courtyard doors are open, fresh air flows through the house—often accompanied by the jazz notes of Joe practicing his saxophone or flute in the music room. “You might say there’s a confluence of the arts coming together here,” Hindlemann says. “This home is really a canvas for Joe and Julie’s lifestyle.”

Look What’s Brewing in Fort Collins... With its Main-Street-USA charisma, the town on the Poudre River has so much going for it that buyers make compromises just to be here
Franklin Avery home, 1879, on Mountain Avenue
By Mark Samuelson Are there any downsides whatsoever to living in Fort Collins, with its good looks and archetypal outdoor lifestyle? Maybe two: The convivial town that rubs shoulder with the northern Colorado Rockies is 65 miles from big-Denver sports attractions; 70 miles from airlines at DIA. But this is a place people make compromises to be in; and top-selling Coldwell Banker agent Carrie Holmes sees a remarkable influx doing just that: some coming for jobs at HP, AMD, Intel and other tech employers; others involved in a bevy of startups that span from software to the same sort of lifestyle-oriented ventures that Boulder attracts.
Still others are imagining Fort Collins as a place to retire...or invest. “There’s so much going on,” says Holmes, who orients buyers with a driving tour of attractions – starting with CSU (a lure for that growing tech sector); then a few blocks north to historic downtown (its 1880s-era banks and hotels were picked by Walt Disney himself to replicate for Disneyland’s ‘Main Street USA’). The movie-set feel spills west into arbored neighborhoods Old Town’s vintage buildings were the model for Disneyland’s Main Street USA. along Mountain Avenue that radiate their own Queen Annes and Victorians, served by a trolley that still runs two miles out to sprawling City Park with ballfields and lakeside water slide. Along the way Holmes points to a plethora of metropolitan resources: Discovery Center Science Museum; The Lincoln Center theater-music-arts venue; Budweiser Event Center (on the way to Loveland, locals call it The Ranch and know it for big entertainment); Oak Street Plaza and other “Old Town” sites with evening art walks and lunch concerts. “In summer, you could attend something every day of the week,” Holmes says – more so in August when ‘New West Fest’ arrives, with eight stages showcasing 60 bands, plus kids’ carnival and beer gardens.
Cyclists gather for an event outside New Belgium Brewing Company
Beer is served up more prominently at the ‘Colorado Brewer’s Festival’ celebrating boutique breweries that have joined Anheuser-Busch in setting roots here – some like New Belgium, getting national reputations. All that activity gives confidence to buyers and sellers, who are stepping into the market with new assurance. “If you’re a buyer, you can’t hesitate,” Holmes says. “You need your financing in order, and if you like something, you have to move on it.” Fort Collins prices, she adds, look attractive by Denver/Boulder standards, particularly for ‘luxury’ homes.

Cooking with the Sisters In her new book, Irene Rawlings shares favorite cast-iron recipes from a group of traveling ladies who know there’s more to camp food than franks and beans
BY MARY BARTHELME ABEL
PHOTOGRAPHY
IN 2010, AUTHOR IRENE RAWLINGS INTRODUCED us to the Sisters on the Fly, a group of adventurous women who refurbish vintage trailers and travel around the country to camp, fly fish and, of course, eat. In her new book, Cast-Iron Cooking with Sisters on the Fly (Andrews McMeel Publishing), Rawlings shares a fun collection of easy recipes using cast-iron pots, pans and Dutch ovens, as well as lots of tips for restoring vintage cast iron.
BY
DAVID FOXHOVEN
“Anything you can cook in a slow cooker, you can cook in a Dutch oven,” says Rawlings, who includes instructions for making the recipes in a kitchen as well as in the great outdoors. “Cast-iron cooking is becoming popular again. We’re finding our mothers’ old Dutch ovens, scrubbing off the rust, and discovering that it’s a wonderful way to cook. You just set it on the campfire in the morning, and when you get back from fishing, dinner is ready.” COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

and bubbly. Fit the bottom pie crust into a 9inch, deep-dish pie pan. Ladle the mixture into the pie crust and top with the other sheet of pastry dough. Cut a few slits in the top of the pie crust. Line the Dutch oven with parchment and carefully place the pie pan on the parchment. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350°F and bake for 25 to 30 minutes more, until the crust is well browned. The pie can be served hot or cold. NOTE: This recipe can be made in a 14-inch Dutch oven using 14 coals on top and 18 coals on the bottom. When reducing the heat, remove 4 coals from the top and 4 coals from the bottom. HINT: Brush a little milk over the top of the pie and especially around the edges to help it brown without burning.
pictured on previous page This savory French-Canadian meat pie recipe is great for a potluck because you can make it in advance, and it is easily cooked in a Dutch oven. It tastes great with a side of piccalilli, sweet relish, hot pepper sauce or spicy ketchup. Jayne Kennedy (Sister #203) makes this dish at Christmas. Serves 4-8 1 1/4 pounds lean ground pork, crumbled 12 ounces lean ground beef 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 2 / cup finely chopped celery 1 garlic clove, minced 1 4 / cup chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 4 / cup chopped celery leaves 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt 1 2 / teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 4 / teaspoon dried marjoram 1 4 / teaspoon ground mace 1 8 / teaspoon ground cloves 1 2 / teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 4 / teaspoon ground allspice Dash of cayenne pepper 2 slices bread, crumbled or whirled in a blender 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 4 / cup beef broth 1 pie crust, bottom and top Preheat the oven to 425°F. Sauté the pork and beef with the onion, celery, and garlic until the meat is browned and the vegetables are soft, stirring occasionally.

Cilantro Lime Martini The citrusy taste of fresh cilantro combines perfectly with the spice and pepper of the ginger. Rachel Beissner (Sister #1240) and Janet Castagnola (Sister #511) have a few pitchers ready at cocktail time.
Stir in the parsley, celery leaves, bay leaf and seasonings. Simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the crumbled or whirled bread to act as a thickener. Stir in the flour; add the broth, stirring until well blended. Cook until thickened
Serves 1 Heaping handful of fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon grated, minced fresh ginger Juice from 1 lime 1 tablespoon simple syrup 2 ounces citrus vodka 1 2 / ounce gin Fill a shaker with crushed ice, cilantro, ginger, lime juice, and simple syrup. Muddle well. Add the vodka and gin and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Award-Winning Chili pictured on previous page Here’s a recipe from Molly Westgate (Sister #190) that can be thrown together in a matter of minutes and cooked for only half an hour. And it is even better the next day. Serves 12 1 pound ground turkey 1 pound ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 2 (14-ounce) cans beans of your choice, drained 2 (14-ounce) cans chopped or crushed tomatoes 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce 3 to 4 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 2 / cup chopped green bell pepper (optional) 1 (4-ounce) can diced mild chiles (optional) Garnish 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese 1 small onion, finely chopped Sprigs of flat-leaf parsley Place a 14-inch Dutch oven over 17 coals. Brown the meat, adding the onion halfway through. Cook until the onion is soft and translucent. Drain. Add the remaining chili ingredients and cook for 20 to 30 minutes. Season to taste. Garnish with the grated cheese, onion, and flat-leaf parsley.
Iron-Skillet Cherry Pie We could eat cherry pie every day...and we often do. This recipe was an old standby for a generation of women who knew their way around pie crust. Serves 8 Crust 2 cups all-purpose flour Pinch of salt 1 cup shortening 1/2 cup cold water Filling 1 4 / cup quick-cooking tapioca 1 8 / teaspoon salt 1 cup plus 2 teaspoons sugar 4 cups pitted cherries 1 4 / teaspoon almond extract 1 2 / teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons butter

Preheat the oven to 400°F. To make the crust: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles pea sized chunks. Stir in the water until the mixture forms a ball. Divide the dough in half and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. Roll one half out and fit into a 12-inch cast-iron skillet. To make the filling and assemble the pie: In a large bowl, combine the tapioca, salt, the 1 cup sugar, cherries, and almond and vanilla extracts. Let stand for 15 minutes. Turn out into the bottom crust. Dot the top with the butter. Roll out the other half of the crust. Cover the cherry mixture with the top crust, flute the edges, and cut decorative vents in the top. (We used a star-shaped cookie cutter.) Bake for 25 minutes. Turn the oven down to 350°F. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes more, until golden brown. Sprinkle immediately with the 2 remaining teaspoons sugar.

Our Favorite Room
Iconic Dining BY JAMIE SIEBRASE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEIGH WEATHERILL
“HANDMADE. MODERN. TEXTURED.” These are the words the owner of this mid-century home in Denver’s Hilltop neighborhood spouted off when he first sat down with interior designer Ashleigh Weatherill, owner of Ashleigh Weatherill Interior Design. Those cues led Weatherill, who starts every project by asking clients to offer several words that describe their vision, to create a dynamic dining room full of mod furnishings and interesting details. A show-stopping walnut table with sturdy yet sleek powder-coated steel legs rests atop stained oak floors that were installed with the home’s original wood details in mind. The table, designed by Weatherill and crafted from local slabs cut by Buena Vista woodworker Alex Mirich, is a handsome and handmade touch. “You typically see a live edge on the outside of a piece,” Weatherill explains. “We put it inside to make the table more inviting.” The crowning touch, a cool Tom Dixon Beat Pendant light fixture, features relaxed angles that pair well with the curvaceous silhouettes of eye-catching orange Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs. “It’s hard to get more classic mid-century modern than this,” Weatherill says. The chairs’ woven rush seats, along with fun floor-length Creation Baumann laser-cut curtains, give the minimalist room texture and pizzazz. While each furnishing is unique, no one piece steals the show. “Usually you have a lead, supporting actors and extras,” Weatherill says, “but with this space, it’s an ensemble cast.”
