WHEN I RETURNED TO Colorado at the end of February for this fabulous job, my husband, Chris, remained in Kansas City to sell our home—a task that has not yet been completed. But that’s another story. In the meantime, I’ve been living with my sisterin-law. She has gone above and beyond the standard hostess duties over the past several months, and I am forever grateful; our family could never have made this transition without her generosity. And she has a lovely home filled with lovely things. But as pretty and clean and comfortable as it is, it’s her home, filled with her things. I have to admit, I miss my things. It feels a little inappropriate to say that. We’re not really supposed to value things, are we? But I do. I’m not talking about basic stuff like dishes or linens or lamps. I have missed the milk glass vases I inherited from my grandmother, a quilt made from my late father’s work shirts and the abstract painting we bought in Mexico on our 20th wedding anniversary. These are the things I treasure and display where I can see them every day. And they make me happy. Chris and I have recently moved into a small apartment in Denver while our Kansas City home languishes on the market. Downsizing gave us the unique opportunity to decide which things were truly our favorites. And I have to say, it was easier than I thought it would be. Our August issue is all about beautiful, meaningful things. From “The Goods,” which shows how you can mix antique furnishings with contemporary art and accessories (page 15), to our featured homes that all contain exquisite art collections (starting on page 42), this issue is filled with ideas to help you make the most of your collections. Because every single thing you buy, collect or inherit should inspire happiness.

A Day at the Beach

A beach in the middle of the Rocky Mountains? You bet. Although completely manmade, the grounds of this Steamboat Springs home look completely natural, thanks to landscape archtect Scott Sones’s careful planning and knowledge of alpine-friendly plants.

26

Ta k e i t O u t s i d e

Celebrate the parting days of all-too-short summer with a Steamboat Springs landscape that has everything—even a beach BY MARY BARTHELME ABEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID PATTERSON

DON’T BE FOOLED: this lush, serene landscape just 10 minutes outside Steamboat Springs used to be a hay field. But the homeowners’ vision for a tranquil outdoor space surrounding their new home led landscape architect Scott Sones to turn a once-blank meadow into a layered, natural landscape in just three months. The request for a mountain stream, waterfall and small lake—and the ability to draw upon water sources on the property—was the starting point for this large project. Inspired by family trips to Cape Cod, Sones, who recently merged his 15-year-old firm with Eagle County-based Land Designs by Ellison to form Ceres+, developed the concept of a beach— right in the middle of the landlocked Rocky Mountains.

27

“The key,” says Duensing, “is the random placement of the boulders. It’s not as easy as it looks; in fact, it’s an art.”

28

(above) Plantings include Miscanthus ornamental grass, alpine-friendly perennials and more than 200 trees. “We like to plant large groves of aspen; it creates a natural sweep and sort of tucks the house in,” Sones says. (opposite) The stunning waterfall and pond were created by David Duensing. “You must be able to stand back and consider what it’s going to look like in a few years,” he says.

By building sand paths lined with ornamental grasses and “planting pockets,” as well as several intimate seating areas, Sones created the feeling of a beachfront home. But where does one find enough sand to make a high-country beach? Sones got lucky at a quarry in Leadville. The mountain stream that surrounds the home and the beautiful waterfall into which the stream feeds were conceptualized by Sones and brought to life by designer David Duensing, who’s been constructing elaborate water features all over the world for more than 20 years. For this project, he hauled in and arranged 100 tons of boulders to create a waterfall that looks as though it’s been there forever. “The key,” says Duensing, “is the random placement of the boulders. It’s not as easy as it looks; in fact, it’s an art.” But that was the ultimate goal for both designers—to create the illusion that the landscape and water features were there long before the home was built—and for that, the act of sculpting was worth the effort. “Most people have no idea [the waterfall] was built,” says Duensing. “This was certainly one of my most successful projects.”

We went on our own little treasure hunt to compile this happy guide, which points to those antique shops—some well-known emporiums, others small-scale hidden gems—that bring the finest finds from the farthest reaches of the world right here to Colorado

Treasures

Untold BY CAROLINE EBERLY

DENVER SHEPTONS ANTIQUES sheptonsantiques.com

Most of the goods you’ll find at Sheptons are of the architectural variety—doors, capitals, pillars, “miscellaneous items you can use to build into your home, or assemble to make something unique,” says shop owner Kent Frick, who does the bulk of his buying in India and Indonesia. But that’s not his only specialty; he also deals in teak furniture, especially tables, which he customizes by hand for his clients. One-of-a-kind finds: Architectural finds, ethnic art, wardrobes, textiles and ceramics, teak furniture LEE ALEX DECOR, leealexdecor.com

You’ll get a dose of happy when you step inside this retro shop, the creative venture of Heather Lee Byron and Theo Alexander Byron. Vintage art decks the walls; smartlooking dressers and case goods hold down corners; Danish modern furniture creates inviting vignettes. The duo also has a special knack for resurrecting old furniture frames

and reupholstering them to look better than ever. One-of-a-kind finds: Mid-century furnishings, from case goods to seating to lighting and art; one of the best vintage table- and barware collections in all of Colorado ERON JOHNSON ANTIQUES eronjohnsonantiques.com

No list of Colorado antiquing destinations is complete without this venerable purveyor, which deals more than 8,000 pieces that span three centuries and 38 countries, and ships to clients around the globe. Eron Johnson’s architectural salvage department is particularly hefty, and the company’s top-notch website is updated daily. One-of-a-kind finds: Lighting, decorative accessories and art, fine furnishings, architectural salvage and garden décor

odds and ends you’ll find inside this boutique, with an inventory that stays true to its name. Harvey Gilmore, who keeps shop with the help of his wife Nanci, believes in “the whole art of recycling,” and to him, dealing vintage wares is the epitome of just that. After owning Little Bear Antiques in Aspen and Carbondale for more than 20 years, the Gilmores brought their business down the hill, opening their new shop off Pearl Street in June. One-of-a-kind finds: Antique furniture, autographed books and photos, Native American artifacts, a guitar signed by The Who

LEGEND ANTIQUES, Colorado Springs, legendantiques.com

Husband-and-wife owners Mark and Roxy Warzecha have spent the past couple of decades building a network of contacts in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England—with the help of thrice annual buying trips–to curate the mix of roughly 1,500 pieces you’ll find in the warehouse. The Warzechas also have a full restoration shop to bring your old items back to life. Add to that a design career that includes stints in Palm Beach and New York, and Van Der Mije offers not only a shop full of distinctive furnishings, but also the design savvy to help her clients go from statement piece to finished room. When an oil bust caused a number of businesses to vacate Main Street 24 years ago, Ron Maupin saw the downturn as an opportunity; his shop has been a fixture in the town landscape ever since. Maupin, who served as mayor of Grand Junction during the mid-1990s, draws upon a background of fine art and design to curate the vignettes in his 5,000square-foot, two-story mall.

Artful Elegance

Inspired by a top-notch art collection, this midtown Denver condo pays homage to European style. CH&L talks with designer Ingrid Fretheim

Venetian plaster walls by Denver’s Sarah Ashford Studio and neutral draperies by Summit Drapery Designs frame the formal living room, defined by an off-white silk-andgold custom rug by CPA Floorcoverings.

Colorado Homes & Lifestyles: Tell us what the homeowner had in mind when she called you in.

Interior designer Ingrid Fretheim: The homeowner bought the show model of this condo building so it already had several nice features. But she wanted to make it hers. In fact, we took out walls, totally redid all the bathrooms, and added a butler’s pantry. The homeowner’s keyword was “elegant.” So that’s what drove the design. CH&L: What was the starting point for the design?

IF: The homeowner fell in love with the piece of art that’s now hanging in the dining room. (Amazingly, the woman in the picture resembles her, but that’s just a coincidence.) She loved not only the subject matter but also the colors. We used that palette to pick the iridescent silk for the dining room chairs and the lavender crystals that hang from the chandelier. Lavender is one of her favorite colors. That picture also works beautifully with the Chagall that hangs directly opposite it. CH&L: Since the homeowner bought everything new, how did you choose furniture that would enhance the art?

IF: I didn’t. When you pick out art that you love, it works on its own merit. That said, the real key to making it stand out is paying attention to scale—in other words, selecting the right floor plan and size of furniture. We chose high-end French reproduction furniture that was just the right size to frame the art visually. For the designer, it’s a skill. For the viewer, it just feels right. (above, left) The front entry sets the tone for the rest of this 6,000-square-foot condo, with its ornate Louis XV reproduction console, Niermann Weeks bench and silk-covered walls. Nothing in the space is antique, but high-quality reproductions, mirrors and chandeliers create the feeling of European sophistication. (above, right) A clear end table by Alan Knight keeps the living room feeling airy and adds a modern touch; the painting over the fireplace, Silver Chalice, is by Canadian artist Johanne Cullen. (opposite) Designer Ingrid Fretheim creatively mixes carefully selected pieces. The Asian-inspired desk, by Julia Gray, is paired with a boldly upholstered William Switzer chair. The abstract painting in the breakfast room is by Ivy Jones.

European Elegance Five Ways to Add Grace To Your Space

The artwork at the head of the table inspired the color scheme throughout the dining room. Purchased in Palm Springs, the painting—Jeanette Pasin Sloan’s Solace—picks up the colors in the iridescent silk-covered William Switzer chairs. The ornate mirror, also by Switzer, plays dramatically off the unframed painting. (above, right) An original Chagall is displayed between two slender table lamps. Crystals in lavender (the homeowner’s favorite color) hang from the Schonbeck chandelier. A bright white porcelain bowl sits atop a gorgeous cream lacquer-andmetal Niermann Weeks console.

MIRRORS These easy-to-find jewels add depth and light to a room. If you don’t have wall space, consider a piece of mirrored furniture. ANIMAL PRINTS A very European touch, using leopard, zebra or tiger prints—great as floor coverings—can provide a sense of connection to the natural world. Smaller elements like animal-print pillows or an ottoman can keep the look subtle. GREEK MOTIFS The Greeks knew beauty, and traditional designs, such as the Greek key pattern, add “wow” to draperies or chair coverings. A TOUCH OF GOLD Overdo the gilt and you’ve gone gaudy, but add just a little gold leaf on a piece of furniture or some molding, and elegance reigns. SYMMETRY European design has always relied heavily on symmetry (two table lamps, two busts, two sconces) as of way of composing space and bringing order. Overdone symmetry, however, can evoke the coldness of military precision. The goal is to appease the eye and create calm instead of chaos.

CH&L: Tell us about the design principles at play when mixing contemporary and classical art.

IF: Mix away. But also look for elements in one piece that converse with another nearby. Maybe the paintings share a certain color. Or maybe you’ve framed them similarly. Notice in this condo that some pieces are framed ornately, some more simply, some are merely canvases. There are no rules except what the eye tells you. We may, at some point, frame some of the unframed pieces and move them somewhere else. That’s the beauty of art— it can be changed or left alone. 43

(top) Fit for royalty, the master bedroom is serene and comfortable. A Murano chandelier hangs above the canopied bed, with embossed leather head- and footboards designed by Nancy Corzine. To shake things up, Fretheim chose contemporary William Switzer nightstands. (above, left) Touches of gold continue in the glamorous master bath. (above, right) Opposite the bed is a custom wall of cabinets and a desk from Moda Antica. The mirrored doors hide a television.

44

(above) A Matti Berglund painting, commissioned by the homeowner, creates the focal point in the sunroom. The chandelier is by David Iatesta; the chairs are by Minton-Spidell. (below) Outdoor furniture designed by Bruce Eicher, Inc., creates a comfy seating area, which is surrounded by potted plants in the style of a European patio.

CH&L: The space looks so European, but with an updated twist. Besides scale, what did you look for in furniture and architectural details to make this home classical yet fresh?

IF: We gravitated toward reproductions of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI because those periods of design have stood the test of time. The French have always been at the forefront of European design, and there are many wonderful variations on the French aesthetic. The three King Louis styles, in particular, mean gold leaf, detailed ornamentation, luscious animal skins and sparkling chandeliers. And when you use reproductions, you must buy the best because of the attention to detail and craftsmanship. This condo pays homage to both of those qualities, resulting in a sense of classical beauty. DESIGN DETAILS

Art and Craft A dark and dated bungalow is transformed into a sleek, modern space filled with light and art IT’S NOT EASY TO WEAVE TOGETHER THE OLD AND THE NEW.

But the owner of this 1914 Boulder home wanted to create a dialogue between modern living and historic roots, so he hired architects E.J. Meade and Claire Jordan of Arch 11 and builder Rich Sands of Hammerwell, Inc. to make it happen. Walls came down, ceilings were raised and windows greatly expanded to create a contemporary interior. “Our client wanted the living space to unfold from indoors to outdoors, with some memory of the Craftsman bungalow,” Meade says. Warm Douglas fir and an original brick fireplace speak to the vintage aesthetic; modern spaces, furnishings and a striking collection of regional, contemporary art place the home squarely in the present.

Where the main level was once broken up into smaller spaces, it now flows from living room to kitchen in a clean, unbroken sweep. “The direction of the wood floor helps elongate the space,” Jordan notes. Furniture-like kitchen cabinetry is raised on legs to keep the look feeling light. A bay window in the dining space was reinterpreted into a floor-to-ceiling expanse of glass, while walls of windows and glass doors in the kitchen extend the connection to the outdoors. Clean-lined, neutral furnishings from Room & Board, HW Home and Design Within Reach recede, allowing the art to pop, and also add warmth to the space. Bobbi Walker of Walker Fine Art in Denver pulled together a diverse mix of abstract and non-representational art for the home. “We didn’t want to compete with nature, but accentuate the vision of bringing the outdoors in,” she says. Color-field pieces by Sabin Aell and Miani Carnevale add vibrancy to the kitchen, while the signature piece that hangs between the living and dining rooms—made by Roland Bernier of carved wood letters covered with photographic images—provides color, texture, and drama. 47

Hints of the past “The house is a blend of clean lines and comfortable materials,” says builder Rich Sands. That blend is especially evident in the living room, where the original brick fireplace was refurbished and topped with a sleek wood mantel. A Ben Strawn abstract oil painting pulls together all the colors in the room. “The windows are a nod to the original two-by-twofoot windows,” Meade says. “The small section on top is a little memory of what was once there.” A wood sculpture by Anne Shutan brings out the rich tone of the Douglas fir floor and adds drama to the fireplace. 48

Treetop retreat The second floor addition, which replaced a smaller attic, is perched like a treehouse to capture panoramic views of Boulder and the Flatirons. Clerestory windows above the bed maintain privacy while allowing light to stream into the master bedroom. Neutral bedding and upholstery set a quiet tone and let nature become the focus of the room. Sabin Aell’s experimental photography of floral images is framed in 100-year-old fence wood that speaks to the homeowner’s interest in recycling. “I always recommend very still or meditative art to bring a sense of peace to a bedroom,” gallery owner Bobbi Walker says. The upstairs office is wrapped in windows on three sides, offering views from the mountains to the eastern plains. A built-in desk and bookshelves help keep order, while artwork offers a relaxing counterpoint. “By placing sculpture [by Anne Shutan] on the desk, the room becomes more livable and not just a functional space,” Walker says. “Above the sofa, we chose a whimsical mixed-media piece by Don Quade with neutral colors, shapes and forms to add serenity.”

50

Outdoor connection Set at the base of Flagstaff Mountain, the house is on a spacious double lot. The rectangular form of the addition is a clear departure from the original clipped gable roof; a new stucco finish contrasts with the old brick. “We are firm believers in a real distinction between old and new, where the passage of time is understood,” Meade says. “We are unapologetic in the contrast of geometries.” The rear facade brings together the original brick-and-stone walls with large expanses of glass. “The old bones are still there and what was added serves the space like an exclamation point,” Sands explains. Landscape architect Luke Sanzone planted a green roof of grasses and wild iris atop the dining room and added new landscape elements to the venerable fruit trees in the yard. A bronze floral sculpture by James Dixon “looks like it grew under the tree as part of the landscape,” Walker says. “The scale is perfect.” Further back, a steel sculpture by Mark Castator anchors the garden with height, weight and a bit of urban punch.

Art Historyy

Soft color blends with neutral fabrics to create a cozy framework for cherished antiques and contemporary art

BY PATRICK SORAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD

WHEN MOST INTERIOR DESIGNERS say they start with a painting, they usually mean they take a piece of art and select colors from it to create the color story for a room. That’s not the case with Sandra Reichborn-Kjennerud, Denver-based designer and art consultant. When she starts with painting, she literally starts with painting—buckets of paint and a crew with brushes in hand. “I never pick paint color from art,” she insists. “The art stands by itself.”

The eye-popping red entry door hints at the brilliance of the art within. The reds in the Amy Metier painting collude with Martha Daniels’ sculpture, Red Nike, and the lacquered walls of the dining room to bring fresh life to this historic home. The dining room furniture is from Henkel Harris.

53

(above) The house has a classic Georgian plan with the addition of an arch-windowed solarium supporting a deck off the master bedroom. (right) Stephen Dinsmore’s This Side of the River dominates the living room’s west wall. The owner selected landscape paintings for the living room for their soothing quality, and because the large paintings fit the expansive wall area.

When choosing colors for her clients, Reichborn-Kjennerud takes an intuitive approach. She looks at the furnishings they will be bringing into their new rooms. What have they already chosen to live with? What hues seem to resonate with them based on existing fabrics, rugs and accessories? From this the designer makes a perceptive leap into her clients’ psyche. “All of us have a palette of colors that we love inside our heads,” she says. “I discover what’s on that palette.” Then she works to select colors from that inner sense, knowing that any future art they buy will fit right in. The process works. Reichborn-Kjennerud selected paint colors for this historic Denver home, for instance, that would create the perfect landscape for both furniture and art. The buttery ecru she chose for the entry, living area and sunroom is a hue similar to one she has often paired successfully with traditional furniture. She shifted to a slightly warmer tone for the kitchen, breakfast nook and bedrooms to accompany Chinese antiques. And the dining room? “I knew I wanted a red lacquer so I went to my manicurist,” she chuckles. Benjamin Moore matched an Orly nail polish color called “Forever Crimson.”

54

{

A New History

Sandra Reichborn-Kjennerud, a long-time collector and art consultant, offers advice about living with antiques: Simply the Best Buy the best antiques you can afford. That might mean trolling garage sales during your twenties or bidding at auction as your earning power expands. Owning high-quality pieces enhances your love of them—and they will always hold their value. Not So Fussy Reichborn-Kjennerud has two words of advice for antique owners: use them. Don’t think of your pieces as rare stow-away items; think of them as part of the house. Plus, with daily use, older pieces take on a wonderful patina. Hang On When a piece begins to lose its thrill after a few years, don’t get rid of it. Reichborn-Kjennerud suggests storing it for a while; if you liked it once you’ll probably like it again. You can refinish and reupholster a piece after a couple years, and it will feel new—er, old—again, but freshly repurposed. Soft Touch Caring for antiques can feel burdensome, and in Colorado’s dry climate things are likely to have cracks. Make sure that the furniture you buy has been in the state for a while, so you can detect any damage. To care for old wood, Reichborn-Kjennerud suggests dabbing it with a barely-moist soft cloth, then quickly wiping away any moisture left behind. 56

(above) The quiet wall color and treasured furniture create a cozy feeling in the living room. Beneath the coffee table are two antique Tibetan boxes that the owner uses to store her children’s art supplies. (opposite, clockwise from top left) The dining room is furnished with traditional furniture and a crystal chandelier, brought up to the moment by contemporary art. In a corner of the entry hall, a Lauri Lynnxe Murphy piece is paired with an antique Chinese chest. Amy Metier’s Secondary Light anchors the second-level landing, and a chandelier adds drama to the small space. The island carries the red motif into the kitchen; halogen pendants add sparkle.

(left) Homeowner and designer agree that while antiques are indeed precious they should also be useful. Collected over many years, the Chinese table and chairs are used for breakfast every morning and homework every night. (above) The sunroom mixes bright liveliness and cozy comfort. Window coverings are Brunschwig & Fils Pillars of India cotton; artwork is by Joellyn Duesberry and Robert Kelly.

After the painting was done, the homeowner set her furniture in place and hung the art. Right away, everything blended beautifully; elements complemented each other without competing. “I didn’t have that sense of being truly home until the paintings were hung,” the homeowner says. “The art is such a part of our family.” Homeowner and designer both agree that contemporary art makes a brilliant counterpoint to antique furniture and traditional fabrics. “[That mix] creates an edge,” says Reichborn-Kjennerud. “It says, ‘wow.’” This homeowner’s inner palette seems to guide her to Colorado artists; many works are by Amy Metier, Emilio Lobato and Stephen Dinsmore, all represented at William Havu Gallery in downtown Denver. The designer’s strategy works similarly for fabrics and lighting. For this client, who already owned much of her furniture, Reichborn-Kjennerud selected fresh upholstery and window coverings. She gathered dozens of

samples from sources at the Denver Design District, edited them based on her knowledge of the client, and then together they made final selections. Lighting was selected from Trog de Lights, a local showroom that imports traditional European-style fixtures from South America. Adding to her collection of new art and old furniture, the homeowner mixed in Chinese antiques and ceramics. Her father spent time in China during World War II and passed on his passion for the culture to his children. She has been collecting for years, but has avoided the pitfall of purchasing pieces too precious to use day to day. The family draws yokeback chairs up to a carved elm table for breakfast. And in the living room, two antique Tibetan chests contain art supplies. Art and antiques bring meaning into their everyday life, the homeowner says: “These pieces give me and my children an appreciation of what came before us, and of how different people have lived and created things in the world.”

STARS 2011 STEAMBOAT WINE FESTIVAL BENEFICIARY

STEAMBOAT ADAPTIVE RECREATIONAL SPORTS’ (STARS) mission is to empower and enrich the lives of people with physical or cognitive disabilities in Colorado’s Yampa Valley and beyond by providing them with recreational opportunities. The organization began in 2006 as an adaptive winter ski program, and today offers winter and summer skiing, biking and kayaking programs, as well as numerous specialized adaptive recreational sports camps throughout the year. Participating in recreational sports gives people with disabilities a chance to be on an equal playing field with their able-bodied peers, and to experience fun, healthy activities. Last year, STARS’ 120 volunteers and instructors provided more than 300 winter participants with 1,000-plus days of adaptive ski lessons. In 2011, The Steamboat Wine Festival will donate 5 percent of ticket sales and 100 percent of auction proceeds to this important nonprofit organization. To learn more about STARS’ special fundraising events during The Steamboat Wine Festival, and how you can help, visit www.steamboatstars.com.

Distinctly Historic BY PATRICK SORAN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSEPH FLORES

ALTHOUGH DENVER OFFERS A STUNNING VARIETY of established neighborhoods and old houses, the city has set aside 51 districts as being so architecturally significant they deserve special treatment. “Historically designated neighborhoods are full of wonderful older homes,” says real estate agent Merlin Parker with Home Real Estate. “And no one can ever ruin them.” These historic districts—some barely comprising a full block, others encompassing entire neighborhoods—are protected by law from being changed in any way without the approval of Denver’s Landmark Preservation Commission. Neighborhoods become districts in a multi-step process, beginning with a few passionate neighbors taking pictures and collecting historic data, and ending with a formal application process and hearings with the Landmark Preservation Commission, the Denver Planning Board and the City Council. (You can learn more about this process by visiting denvergov.org.) So what are the pros and cons of buying into one of these exclusive enclaves? The houses themselves offer the biggest upside. They’re old. They have history and personality. Many are awash in hardwood and high ceilings, paneling and pantries. More importantly, no one can ever wreck the value or the visuals by building an odd addition or popping a top next door. For the downside, look at the opposite face of the same coin. Anytime you want to do anything to the exterior of your own home—even put on a new roof—you must fill out forms and submit them to the Commission, which can lead to several weeks (or even months) of lag time, depending on the complexity of the issues. Commission members can often be history-loving nitpickers. For instance, while homeowners in standard neighborhoods may choose any replacement window

Living in one of Denver’s historic neighborhoods can be pure pleasure, but know the pros and cons before you buy

they want, new windows in these districts must be appropriate to the historic design, which can drive up the cost significantly. But while repairs and upgrades might burden the bank, historic-home owners can breathe easy knowing the value of their gem isn’t as susceptible to dips in the market as conventional homes may be. From an investment perspective, these neighborhoods are rock solid. “Historic homes are labors of love,” says Parker. “People move in and never leave.” Which means there are few opportunities to buy. “The recession has hit everyone,” he says, “but these areas held a lot of their value.” If buying a slice of the past is sounding like a good idea, turn to these beloved historic districts.

H UMBOLDT I SLAND, COUNTRY C LUB AND 7 TH AVE . These neighborhoods represent the grandes dames of Denver’s historic districts. Stately homes by important local architects such as Jacques Benedict and Frank Edbrooke flank tree-lined, flagstone sidewalks. Each is perfectly perched between the hustle and bustle of downtown and the chic shops of Cherry Creek. “Two words—tranquil and elegant,” Parker says. C URTIS PARK Urban hipsters with a penchant for Queen Anne painted-lady homes find themselves hopping on the light rail for the short commute downtown from these sometimes-gritty, but on-themend districts north of downtown. Seven little historic enclaves have been designated here since 1995, and another is in the works. H IGHLANDS The Highlands neighborhood also contains a number of historic districts within its broader borders. The advantages here are the dazzling views of downtown and the mountains, the eclectic mix of Victorian and bungalow architectural styles, and some of the best restaurants in town. Plus, Sloan’s Lake is within skipping distance. A LAMO P LACITA “The best kept secret in Denver,” says Parker. Here, bungalow-style homes with loads of built-ins surround the flowerbedecked acreage of Alamo Placita Park on Speer Boulevard between Ogden and Emerson Streets. While other symphony orchestras around the country may be struggling, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra is reporting record-breaking ticket sales. Every 21-week season, approximately 220,000 patrons get gussied up to hear a wide variety of performances, including the star-studded Pops Series. After naming Red Rocks Amphitheatre the “Best Small Outdoor Venue” for eleven years straight, Pollstar magazine eliminated the venue from the running. The award is now called the Red Rocks Award. The Denver Performing Arts Complex spans four city blocks (12 acres) and features 10 performance spaces connected by an 80-foot-tall glass roof. It is the world’s largest performing arts facility under one roof.

In 2011, the Durango Arts Center sponsored its first 10-Minute Play Contest. Referred to as the “haiku of the American stage,” 10-minute plays have become a fun genre for today’s audiences and playwrights. The Center will perform the five finalists’ plays on September 16 and 17. Although coloratura soprano Dolores Mae Wilson performed all over the world, she is best known for originating the title role in the world premiere of Douglas Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe at Colorado’s Central City Opera in 1956. After a $92 million overhaul in 2005, Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House has become renowned as one of the world’s finest acoustical venues. The sound is so good that performers don’t need (or use) microphones to carry their voices to every single one of the 2,225 seats. Seventy-five years ago, in a resort town with a population of 35,000, philanthropist Alice Bemis Taylor financed the opening of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center—one of the first institutions in the country to offer facilities for both the visual and performing arts.

Denver has long been a place of culture, hosting a performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in the 1860s before the city even had a school or a hospital to its name. Not far away, the Central City Opera house opened its doors in 1878, making it the fifth oldest opera program in the nation. Built by local publishing giant Walter Walker in 1923, the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction has hosted such colorful artists as John Philip Sousa, Al Jolson and Lyle Lovett. Having just concluded its 50th season, the Colorado Ballet is a nationally recognized regional dance company that was conceived as a ballet school by Denver natives Freidann Parker and Lillian Covillo. The Colorado Ballet Academy continues today, honing the skills of future ballerinas.
