awareness for funds, goods and services for children in need, ages 18 and under,” says Joyce Eacock, director of special events. Funds cover anything from eyeglasses, medical equipment and beds to abuse counseling, dental treatments and myriad other needs. “We rely on a vast network of case workers, medical professionals and other third-party professionals to be our eyes and ears in the community. They observe, identify and validate a need then apply to the Love Fund for assistance on behalf of a child in their care,” Eacock says. She also notes that the Love Fund’s mission is crucial in these modern times of government budget-cutting. “As more government programs are eliminated or budgets are severely reduced, children’s needs still exist. Without our fundraising efforts, the thousands of children we serve each year would not receive help,” she says. And that’s just not acceptable, according to Bryant. The board meets annually to determine how to distribute donations to requests on the docket, and the Love Fund League, a group of dedicated and exceptional volunteers comprised of men
“take nothing for granite”
and women of various ages and gifts, supports the mission to improve children’s lives in whatever way it can. The Love Fund operates with the FOX 4 station’s encouragement and support. The organization’s office is physically located at WDAF with its 2.5-person administrative staff, including Executive Director Lisa

FOX 4 also assists in volunteer personnel, disseminating public service announcements and sponsoring some of the fundraisers, such as the Lunch with an Old Bag, a great ladies event with donations of designer bags both new and “gently” loved; Summer Slam Softball Tournament; Sack It For Santa; and KCH&G’s Boulevard of PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Dreams Homes Tour. Herron says the Love Fund thrives in great part because of the station’s involvement and passion for it. “Of course, FOX 4 is instrumental in telling the public of our successes and our needs,” she says. Corporate entities and community groups also have helped create success. “eData Solutions, CVS Pharmacy, Applebee’s International and Silpada Designs are just a few of our loyal supporters, and many of them have employees who serve on our Love Fund League of volunteers,” Bryant says. In addition, countless organizations have named the Love Fund as benefactor of their fundraising efforts. Eacock reflects that KCH&G’s Boulevard of Dreams Homes Tour is the perfect partner for the Love Fund. “We’re in the business of answering functional needs of children and helping them develop self-esteem and identity. The involvement with the homes tour will help us get that message out to a compassionate audience.”
HOW YOU CAN HELP The Love Fund continues by the grace and goodwill of compassionate individuals and businesses. If you would like to help, they welcome you to: ●

fund services to area children. ●

Homes in The Meadows range from $400,000 to $500,000. Houses in The Manor are anywhere between $500,000 and $800,000, which overlaps with prices in The Estates, where homes are $700,000 to $2 million. The broad range of prices doesn’t interrupt the cohesive flow of the subdivision, though. Why not? Because each village has its own specific building and landscaping requirements to which homeowners must adhere. “People drive into Mills Farm and say they love how it feels, but they can’t put their finger on why,” says Mills Farm real estate agent David Mombello. “The reason why is because all the homes built go through a design review committee and an architectural review committee.” Those committees administer the rules and regulations that allow people to tailor their homes to their own wants yet keep the homes from looking drastically different than their surroundings. While each neighborhood has different guidelines, all homes must be stucco with trimmed windows on all four sides and have a predetermined amount of square footage per floor plus a certain number of trees. “We’re not concerned about what style of house someone picks; we have Contemporary, French Country, Arts and Crafts, Tuscan and Old World style homes,”

FINE HOME DESIGNS SINCE 1954
Because of his previous developments, Adam has learned that attention to finer details is what satisfies customers at the end of the day. After all, it was he who chose the bronze horses lining the entrance to Mills Farm. The statues are definitely unique but aren’t unusual for Adam. In fact, the bronze detail has become somewhat of a trademark for his developments. When he constructed the community of GlenEagles, he opted to PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Homeowners are treated to a stellar clubhouse offering amenities such as a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, a caterer’s kitchen, high-tech workout facilities with his-and-her locker rooms, and three different swimming pools, says Mills Farm agent Mindy Shane.

“One [pool] is an 18-and-over infinity pool,” Shane says. “Then there’s a fenced-in toddler pool and a Junior Olympic-sized pool.” Additionally, Adam says he is currently constructing a basketball court, sand volleyball court, playground and two tennis courts that will lie adjacent to the clubhouse. Sitting in the middle of the development is Timber Creek Elementary, the newest primary school in the Blue Valley School District. Mills Farm is also within the boundaries for Aubrey Bend Middle School and Blue Valley Southwest High School, two of the latest additions to the district. Adam says that having an elementary school within walking distance to the homes is just one of the many things that residents have come to love about Mills Farm. “[Homeowners] love the pools, they love the fitness center, they love their neighbors.” It’s like any product: [people] are going to buy from whoever can offer the best product at the same price. And we have a far superior product. The consumers are pretty smart; they know that.”

Starr Homes Award-winning Starr Homes is a name synonymous with an exceptional standard of living and an expectation of amenities. Kit Starr, who started the company a decade ago and was joined by his brother, Gerry, in 2005, had a vision of building homes to fit a customer’s specifications. Gerry, who earned two engineering degrees from the University of Missouri, shares his brother’s passion of creating living spaces that match a homeowner’s lifestyle and budget. Energy efficiency, fresh ideas and quality, cost-effective construction techniques are trademarks of a Starr-built home. In addition, each home is energy-audited and performance-tested. “On average, our homes are 30 percent more energy-efficient than a standard house,” says Kit, who holds an MBA from Creighton University. “In today’s market, that’s important.” Starr Homes combines a reputation of integrity with superior planning and a proven platform of exemplary customer support with the synergy of two brothers committed to excellence. Gerry says the business relationship that Starr Homes crafts with each client is as crucial as the expertise that goes into building a custom structure. “As a builder of custom homes, primarily in southern and western Johnson County, we deliver exceptional value,” Gerry says. “We’re known for building homes that will last, maximize living space, eliminate wasted Starr Homes
space and minimize the cost of homeownership.” Kit says Starr Homes rarely builds the same home twice, though he and Gerry have introduced unique concepts and features that many clients now request, including a large pantry to accommodate a second refrigerator and a floor plan without a formal dining room. “We have a flex room in many of our designs that homeowners use in various ways,” Kit says. “Many of our clients don’t want a specific formal dining room.” The Starr brothers don’t have a goal of becoming the biggest builder in Kansas City; instead, they want to keep in touch with their customers and maintain the quality that is a hallmark of their company. “Quality at

EL-J Originals The Boulevard of Dreams home is a pictureperfect example of how architectural designer Ellen Weinstock works in tandem with Starr Homes to produce a seamless environment for a modern family’s lifestyle. “The home features compacted square footage but is big on design and amenities to complement a homeowner’s busy life,” says Weinstock, who has been drawing up plans for 30 years and has worked with multiple builders. “There are two laundry rooms, a flex room that is a Starr Homes signature and a loft area for children.” The striking home in this year’s Boulevard of Dreams captures Weinstock’s affinity for efficient design that still makes room for fresh, innovative style. Weinstock, whose client base is based on referrals and who still draws her residential home plans by hand — a lost art in today’s world of computer-generated design — thrives on creating a unique canvas for each home. “I interview clients to find out their needs and dreams,” Weinstock says. “Sometimes we’ll talk for several hours, and I’ll interject questions along the way.” When that intimate conversation ends, she is armed with puzzle pieces that she then compiles into a cohesive design. “Learning how people want to use their homes, and not just live in them, is a fascinating part of my job,” says Weinstock, whose love affair with designing homes and floor plans began at an early age with a Big Chief tablet and No. 2 pencil. She works with clients relocating to Kansas City from other parts of the country and enjoys incorporating their styles. “It’s interesting to see what ideas people bring from the West coast or the Northeast, for example,” Weinstock notes. “That makes our landscape varied and interesting.”

Jan Burket Interior Design Jan Burket’s distinctive flair has captivated homeowners from the Rockies to the Atlantic, encompassing interior designs for high-rise condominiums to vacation homes. Burket, who is based in Kansas City, emphasizes that each of her projects defines the ultimate design. “My design work is driven and inspired by the client’s needs and particular style of the home,” she says. “I don’t have a certain ‘look,’ and my design isn’t dictated by fads.” Her biggest thrill is to have clients say the finished product exactly reflects their vision. She has designed two or more homes for many of her clients. “When a homeowner tells me that they love being surrounded by their favorite things or that their friends tell them the home looks just like them, I know I’ve done my job,” she remarks. Each home speaks its own language to Burket, and she listens carefully to both the structure and the client. “Someone can’t tell me too much about what they want. I need to know who they are, how they entertain, what their interests are,” she says. In addition to versatile and adaptable design, Burket offers design consultation and services, and provides a broad range of furnishings and appointments, including custom-designed and custom-manufactured products. When

encourages them to see a project as a whole. “It’s important for someone to envision what this granite, that fabric, that paint color are going to look like together,” she emphasizes. Burket’s husband, David, is general manager and assists in project management. “He acts as my 10 right arms,” Burket says.

patterns featuring colorful birds, elephants, lions, antelopes and tigers drape the walls. “It’s a bit of a departure from the main level,” Burket says of the loft. “It’s a fun atmosphere for adults and kids.” The guest bedroom is star-worthy with leather stools and a faux-leather headboard. Taking a leap across the color wheel is the soft pink and white girl’s room, with white furniture pieces and mirrored butterflies scattered about the walls. It’s feminine, “but it isn’t so sweet that it makes your teeth hurt,” Burket remarks. The boy’s room is 100-percent masculine, featuring two black metal bunk beds with desks underneath and yellow-orange chairs, round black butterfly chairs and artistically placed bicycle wheels. No matter what space you’re drawn to, all can agree that each flaunts superior design, inviting living quarters and down-to-earth elements. “People are going for casual, comfy living that’s more functional and practical,” says Kit Starr, CEO of Starr Homes. designed without a formal dining room; open, functional spaces with lots of natural materials; and energy-efficient surprises that make it a cleaner, greener home — standard features in Starr’s homes. After all, it’s the extra details that you don’t “see” that create a more comfortable, less-drafty house. “Hidden” features include thicker walls (compared to average construction practices in the area) sealed with an elastomeric sealant prior to the blownin insulation for a virtually airtight building envelope (upon visual testing and verification); concealed ductwork inside the second-floor conditioned envelope, increasing energy efficiency on the second floor by more than 30 percent; an ERV system that brings in fresh, filtered air; and increased efficiency in new windows and heating/cooling equipment. This home, like

all the others built by Starr Homes, is in the process of being certified as an Energy Star home — preliminary testing indicates energy savings of about 40 percent versus the same home built to code. “We have found it to be less costly to upgrade a few construction materials and methods than to build a cheap house when you factor in the cost of energy that you save over time,” Starr says. The final energy audit results will be posted during the tour. With its mixed use of materials, earthy colors, green features and sporadic pops of color, the Aspen Ridge floor plan offers a cozy — and stylish — place to live and hang out. “We want to make you feel like you’re in Colorado at a remote vacation lodge rather than a home in the suburbs,” Starr says. In that case, welcome to the Rockies. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Willis Construction Family owned and operated, Willis Construction has been in business for 45 years. The company specializes in designing and building luxury custom homes throughout the Kansas City area, including prestigious communities such as Mills Farm, Loch Lloyd, Highlands Creek, WatersEdge and White Horse Villas. Owner Bob Willis and son Patrick dedicate their success to focusing on quality and personal involvement. “Our clients deal directly with us from beginning to end,” Bob says. “Our hands-on, personal involvement makes us readily available to them, and it keeps communication open.” Because it has stayed small and selective, Willis Construction is able to maintain a high level of quality for customers. “We’re small enough to handle our work in the way it needs to be handled __ well. We’d rather have 10 to 15 happy customers a year than have a ton who are not,” Bob says. Willis’ homes range from formal estate homes to casual maintenancefree villas and styles that are traditional, French, English, Tuscan, country and contemporary. “Our work is tailored to our clients. Sometimes it’s a splash of all of those styles that make a home,” Bob says. “We work with some very reputable architects to help get people what they want.” Willis Construction has specialized in building homes tailored for Willis Construction
clients with special needs, including universal design features, elevators, lifts and zero-step entries. “There’s a great deal of satisfaction in making a beautiful house that also helps someone,” he says. Over the years, Willis Construction has been recognized as a leader in Kansas City’s housing market. It has won several awards from KCH&G as well as the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. “We stress quality of construction and materials, and that’s made us successful even during difficult times. If we do everything right today, tomorrow will take care of itself.”

Design Ideas by Nancy For 27 years, Nancy Vasquez, owner of Design Ideas by Nancy, has been creating beautiful interiors for homeowners in the Kansas City area. An art major in college, she discovered her niche for interior design during her first job at an architectural firm. She loves the personal contact with clients that the interior design business brings. “People are so thrilled when I turn their house into a home,” she says. “I get hugs at the end of a job, and it’s just a wonderful feeling.” Many of her clients are repeat customers or family members of previous clients. With a business built on referrals, Vasquez knows the value of good customer service. “I like to build long-lasting relationships with my clients and really try to personalize the experience,” she says. Vasquez doesn’t have one design style. Instead, she bases a design on homeowners’ desires with something that fits their lifestyle. “I ask a lot of questions so I can take care of the homeowners’ needs,” she says. “Everyone has a vision in their head for their home; they just don’t know how to create it. I try to give them information and also give them reasons why I do what I do.” Vasquez

their homework. The master bath also sports superior functionality with his-and-her vanities, a separate makeup vanity, coffee bar and built-in closet dresser. Whereas some floor plans incorporate an office or library next to the front door, The Brooks’ is set at the back of the house, next to the master suite. “So many people work out of their homes, and this location gives them more privacy and a nicer view of their backyard rather than the street,” Patrick says. Upstairs, three bedrooms each contain a private bath. Connecting them is a loft featuring a pocket kitchen and laundry room. “It offers older kids their own independent space, or if the homeowners don’t have kids at home, it’s a place for their adult kids to come back home to,” Patrick explains. Families of all sizes enjoy The Brooks’ flexibility, convenience and casually elegant design sense.
