TILE STYLE

Go bold with materials, placement and pattern for looks that make a (back)splash.

Left to right: glass, natural stone, metal, inset design on the diagonal and geometric shapes

TURNING A HOUSE INTO A HOME IS ABOUT FINDING THE right mix of function and personality. Nowhere is this more visible than in the kitchen. In an area where so many of the features are predetermined, the backsplash is one place where you can display your creativity. Here’s some inspiration. MATERIAL CHOICES:

Glass Whether it’s tiny square mosaics or larger subway tiles, glass tiles are an attractive way to add color to a kitchen. These tiles come on easy-to-install mesh backs and look great in contemporary kitchens. Add even more style with crushed glass.

Natural Stone Travertine, marble and tumbled stone add texture to a kitchen and work with any decorating style. Carrara marble backsplashes, white tiles with gray veins, are gaining popularity because they give the kitchen a “classic, clean and crisp look,” says Tiffany Rupp, interior designer for Kenny’s Tile.

Metal Homeowners who want a modern kitchen are choosing metal backsplashes. Metal tiles come in a variety of shapes, such as squares, rectangles and rhomboids. These tiles are easy to install thanks to mesh-backed sheets and grout. PLACEMENT:

Behind Appliances “I’m starting to see a lot of backsplashes behind cooking appliances,” says Jen Ebert, a luxury appliance specialist for the

20 • KCHANDG.COM

Kitchen Design Studio at Nebraska Furniture Mart. “The material used or pattern of the tiles behind the appliances differs from those used in the rest of the kitchen.”

Above a Stove “Homeowners are making a picture above the stove,” says Jeremy Mitchell, assistant manager for The Tile Shop. “Frame the area above the stove with a contrasting tile border to make a focal point.” PATTERNS:

Glass and Stone Many homeowners are playing with textures in the kitchen by mixing glass and stone tiles. “A decorative strip of glass tiles ties in the shine of the countertop,” Mitchell says. This look also works with metal tiles.

Diagonal Designs and Geometric Shapes Add interest to a wall of tiles by turning them on a diagonal, arranging them in a brick-like pattern or choosing irregular shapes. Arranging tiles in these patterns can add height to a kitchen, says Kyle Slattery, showroom manager for Sunderland Brothers. COLOR:

Forget neutral hues and have fun with color. Grays, greens and chocolates are great tile color choices for the kitchen. Grout also comes in many colors, making it an easy — and unexpected — way to add pizzazz to a backsplash. “Use a neutral-color tile in a pattern and highlight it with a contrasting grout color,” Ebert says.

IS THE MIDWEST SHIFTING AWAY FROM traditional design? We asked five designers for their latest kitchen remodels, and what we got was a straight-edge answer. Minus the frills, these hot spots for culinary action will still send envy chills down your spine.

A CLASSIC REBORN THIS SOLID 1923 COLONIAL-STYLE home deserved a period-appropriate kitchen. Formerly contemporary, the look needed to be reminiscent of the past while the function represented the present and future. Designer Randall Sisk of Kitchens by Kleweno reworked the room by removing an island that cut off circulation and a radiator that curtailed counter space. After adding a third window overlooking Ward Parkway and plenty of lighting, the space blossomed. Although it’s period in style, it’s modern in utility. The cabinet fronts were fashioned after the style of the house’s doors, custom-made by Draper DBS. A Sub-Zero column refrigerator holds the go-to food items, while fridge and freezer drawers have their own spot by the smoothie bar. A low table down the center doubles as eat-in space or for prepping food. A refinished antique pie safe holds the family dishware, its golden wood tones warming the room and balancing the understated gray tones of the countertops. “This fits more with the style of the house,” the delighted homeowner says. BIRCH ON A BUDGET MOST OF TODAY’S KITCHEN REMODELS include blowing out walls and creating one giant space, but after Ben and Jewel Allers settled on the fact that their Brookside residence wasn’t meant to live that way, the couple agreed on a pretty snazzy plan for opening the room up anyway. Allers, an architect, designed a store-front glass exterior wall, visually expanding the room into the backyard. “The sense of space has increased,” he notes. And the eastern exposure offers some of the best light of the day. “We spend a lot more time in here, especially in the morning.” The Allerses saved money not only by not removing walls but also by choosing to order cabinets from IKEA, known to help kitchen cabinet replacements come in around $15,000 or less. Allers also tripled countertop space by extending into a breakfast nook and opting to use their dining room table or barstools at the end of the countertop. Other upgrades include a downdraft cooktop, recycled glass countertop, floating glass appliances and heated floors.

MID-CENTURY MAKEOVER DON’T LET THE COLORFUL FIESTAWARE AND SPLASHY GRILL station fool you into thinking this kitchen is just for looks — owners Bruce McGillivray and Mark Pylypczuk are serious cooks. “It’s an intentional room,” notes Kristeen Armstrong-Scott, the couples’ certified kitchen designer. As part of a whole-house remodel, the kitchen comprises a large space on the main level with well-thought-out details. The original design was a Kivett & Myers (pioneers of the modern sports complex) from 1951. “Some of the elements were unique and some were awful,” Armstrong-Scott says. She kept the feel but rethought the current space and added square footage. The L-shape of the room is divided into a baking side and grilling side. The room was not wide enough for an island, so Armstrong-Scott designed a high top that’s inclusive but doesn’t get in the way. While there are no upper cabinets on the exterior wall, there is plenty of storage in the room as well as in the built-in hall pantry and a true walk-in pantry complete with a counter for cooling pies. (How very mid-century!)

A COMPLETE RETHINK IN A NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE ALL THE HOUSES LOOK the same, this one is a hidden gem. It underwent not just a remodel but an entire “rethink.” The homeowners — a power couple with dual careers and busy children — wanted a home fit for family and entertaining. Knowing their design style was foundationally different than the traditional home they were living in, they totally reinvented the entire home in a progressive fashion. Dramatically impactful in both style and functionality, it’s “warm but forward,” describes Geri Higgins of Portfolio Kitchen & Home. “They looked at what they had and decided not just to refresh it but to optimize it. It reflects not only how they live but how they want to live,” she says. PHOTOS

The main goal with the addition was that it didn’t look cut and pasted onto the original home. The team of experts sat down with the homeowners to determine a game plan to bring the blueprint and vision to breathtaking fruition. “My husband, daughters and I had lived in the house for five years and knew exactly how we lived and what our wish list was,” says the homeowner, who adds that her family was truly vested in and loved the property. “Adding livable space was the only viable option; we didn’t want to move.” Terstriep had worked with the homeowners five years earlier during an initial renovation. “We developed a synchronicity and a relationship of trust, and I understood that more than anything they wanted a warm, welcoming and comfortable place to enjoy a simple and fulfilling family life,” she says. The rooms are used often and reflect a lifestyle where the family of five gathers around a warm fire for game night, in the cozy theater room watching a movie or in the pool house on a languid summer evening. Stately in scope and spacious in size, the residence — influenced by Tuscan, European and French Country design — is full of intricate and sentimental layers. There are accumulated memories that go along with family heirloom antiques, portraits hanging above mantels and carefully collected objects. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

LEFT... An expansive kitchen overlooks the gardens that the homeowner helped design and tends to; gleaming hardwood floors and a breakfast nook open to an inviting hearth room that frequently plays host to all family members. TOP RIGHT... An inviting wine cellar with a tasting room was designed for the couple to enjoy their favorite wine selections. The room has a slate floor and an eye-catching antique cabinet with doors made from the colorful bottoms of wine bottles. BOTTOM RIGHT... Initially, a screened-in porch was planned off the master suite. “But once the space was framed out, we decided instead to have a sitting area with a fireplace,” the homeowner says.

The challenge was creating a seamless flow between the existing home and the renovation, not only on the interior but also on the exterior. Painstaking research produced the handmade whitewashed brick that was a perfect match to the original home. On the inside, careful attention was paid to preserving the integrity, from integrating tile and tumbled travertine into rooms like the library while maintaining the hardwood in other rooms. A barrel vault was added in the master sitting room with French doors leading to a balcony with a view of the gardens and pool; an unusual groined vault — a typical architectural feature of medieval European churches — was added to the master bedroom for spectacular effect. The new addition correlates with the family’s personal sense of style and living and is a harmonious place to live and play. “We have more space that is both functional and dynamic,” the homeowner says. Terstriep says the homeowners’ passions to not only make the renovation picture-perfect but to also make it feel like home helped to achieve a winning work of art. “The combination of old and new and the love of family will be forever present in this home,” she says.

Westlake Ace Hardware Sponsors Johnson County Home & Garden Show W

estlake Ace Hardware, a Kansas City tradition, is once again sponsoring the Johnson County Home & Garden Show March 2-4 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

Founded more than a century ago in 1905, Westlake Hardware has been a fixture in Kansas City neighborhoods for years. The Lenexa-based company has more than 25 locations throughout the metro area. Through the years, Westlake has built its reputation by having a knowledgeable, helpful and friendly staff committed to providing a level of advice and assistance that is hard to find. The company’s advertising tag line says it all: “Small projects. Big know-how. Ask Away.” Stop by the Westlake exhibit (#404) to see how they can help with your outdoor living projects.

Welcome Yourself Home F

eng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement to achieve harmony with

the environment. Practitioners believe cities, homes, buildings and even furniture should be laid out and utilized in such a way that energy, or chi, is maximized. Good energy results in harmony and balance within the space. Devotees believe that the front door of a home is where a large amount of energy enters, so having a front door that is appealing, in good working order and free from clutter directly affects the inhabitants’ fortune and health. Regardless of whether one worries about a home’s chi, a front door does have power. Just ask a real estate agent. Potential buyers form impressions quickly, and a front door is often the first thing they see. If that impression is good, regardless of other factors such as price, they will more likely find a way to justify their emotional response and buy that house. The best reason to put time, energy and thought into your front door is to set the mood for the whole home. It should be welcoming to visitors and make you happy to come home. The door also needs to withstand rain, snow, wind and damage from sun, and it must protect from would-be intruders. This is asking a lot from the portal into your home! CONTINUED ON FOLLOWING PAGE

If a door is solid and secure but looks tired, you could give it a simple facelift using paint. Instead of matching a door to the main color of the house, a bold color can make it “pop.” A red, dark green, orange or black door can change the entire appearance of a home. Faux painting is also an option; a faux graining can transform a steel door into one that looks like antique oak. New hardware also can help transform the look. Changing out a dull and worn brass knob, backplate and hinges can update your door inexpensively. For the older home, there are new escutcheons, rosettes and thumb turns that mimic their

old ancestors and maintain the flavor of the home. Exterior doors can take a real beating. In addition to damage from the elements, sticky fingers, dirty shoes and doggie drool can make a door look old, but it’s important to be aware when a door needs to be replaced. Rotting wood and metal that is out of shape are obvious signs. If the frame of the door is badly out of square because of the house settling, it’s time to call a professional. Have your door installed by the manufacturer or a professional for a number of reasons. The old door needs to be removed carefully to avoid damage to a home’s walls. It also needs to be plumb, level and square in the opening and sealed properly to prevent water damage and ensure energy efficiency. Exterior doors also can be heavier than they look, especially if they contain glass components. Dragging or dropping them can cause damage, preventing them from fitting properly. Finally, by having the manufacturer measure for the new door and install it, you are assured a perfect fit. More than a dozen companies that are purveyors of doors will be exhibiting at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show March 2-4 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

allow in; this is referred to as their “openness factor, which usually takes into account the direction a window faces, the glare that is generated and the view that is desired. Motorized retractable awnings can be extended or retracted with the push of a button and are available with metal or fabric roofs. Non-retractable patio covers are typically attached to the house and have improved in recent years. Wood patio covers and those mimicking wood are good choices if you want your patio cover to have a natural look that blends in with the environment. Covers also can be constructed from steel, copper or bronze. Using metal for a patio cover is a unique option and will probably last as long as the home while developing a beautiful patina. A patio cover with louvers that open and close is a good option for those wanting choices. They are typically constructed of formed aluminum, which gives them flexibility and durability to withstand the elements. A number of companies make the louvered covers to mimic wood, and they look much like a pergola but with the added advantage of being a solid cover __ at the push of a button. Consumers can request a patio roof to be divided into two separately controlled sections so one section can be left open to eliminate smoke from a grill and the other remains closed to maintain shade. These can be attached to existing decks or homes, or they can be constructed as standalone structures. Limiting our bodies and homes to direct sunlight has always been a concern. The choices for shading today are limited only by the imagination. And fortunately, a solution does not have to be a detriment to the overall beauty of a home, patio or porch; it can be a beautiful addition. Awnings

The Most Important Question to Ask Your Remodeler I

f you’ve made the decision to update your home, before you hire a remodeler, ask if he or she is a member of NARI. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is a not-for-profit trade association

committed exclusively to the professional remodeling industry and homeowners. Kansas City NARI is the voice of the remodeling industry and an ally to area homeowners. NARI members are experienced, ethical and professional. NARI suggests you ask some critical questions before you hire a remodeler: How long have you been in business? Does your company carry workers’ compensation and liability insurance? Is your company EPA lead-certified? How many projects like mine have you completed in the past two years? Can I have a list of references? Kansas City NARI represents remodeling contractors, subcontractors, product manufacturers, lenders and other allied businesses. Check out the Kansas City NARI list of qualified members at remodelingkc.com. Celebrating Life with Decor M

id-century modern furniture, also called Danish Modern and Scandinavian Modern, was in sharp

contrast to the lavish, ornate and extremely decorated furniture that preceded it. World War II was one catalyst for the design change, as there was a shortage of available materials, and manufacturers used whatever types of wood and supplies were available. The furniture was described as simple and streamlined and became popular for its contemporary and futuristic look. In the past decade, clean-lined furniture has experienced a resurgence. Its uncluttered, fluid style creates an ideal backdrop for seasonal decor, collections and special pieces. With simpler furniture, decorative items don’t compete for attention. In many ways, decorating satisfies our innate desire to celebrate each day, and rightfully so. Little touches can mirror a home’s inhabitants’ personalities, such as with collections. Items collected through the years tell a story. Most decor today, however, is typically a mixture of cottageindustry items and those that are trendy, mass-produced and a reflection of our collective culture. Rebecca Shipley, with Olathe Glass & Home Decor, says custom projects are increasingly used to change decor from season to season. She sells a number of items like lanterns and beautifully crafted but simple bowls that can be decorated to fit the current season or a special event. Shipley also tells customers who are seeking help decorating an entire room to bring a photo in so her staff can make specific recommendations. Decorating has been defined as “adornments that make PHOTO COURTESY OF OLATHE GLASS & HOME DECOR

an area more pleasant,” so find what works for you and make your home the most inviting and appealing place for you, your friends and family. Olathe Glass & Home Decor is just one of the companies that will be exhibiting at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show March 2-4 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

& Happy Habitat

AR TISANS

KARRIE KANEDA ahappyhabitat.blogspot.com KARRIE KANEDA IS A HAPPY (AND SPUNKY) homeowner, wife and mother of two who has taken her artistic talent to the drawing — uh, design — board.

Artist’s Creations I once read, “Do one thing and do it well.” I like to think I’ve stuck to that by saying that “patterns” have been my one thing I do well. I design patterned goods and currently have three pattern categories: eco throws (recycled cotton blankets), phone cases and stationery.

Popular Patterns You’ll find Fretwork, Tribal, Lattice and Zig Zag designs for your blanket, with additional patterns for cards and phone cases, including Trellis, Arabesque, Waves, Greek Key, Chinoiserie, Polka dot, Diamond and Circles.

Favorite Piece I get most excited about the eco throws, the Fretwork pattern being my favorite. I was looking for an Arabic patterned throw but couldn’t find one and thought maybe I could make my own. I love that they serve a function, are resourceful by using discarded cotton and are pretty!

Source of Inspiration Inspiration usually comes from traveling. At the core is my love for Moorish tile I first saw in southern Spain, which drives my passion for patterns. I’m attracted to anything exotic and love traditional ethnic patterns. And color has

I think I’m insatiable for creating, “ which keeps me going, almost like fuel for my soul. I’m constantly seeing patterns, colors and ideas wherever I go and filing them away in my head.

always been an inspiration — I get so excited about unexpected combinations. I believe that you can find inspiration just about anywhere. The other day, my son pointed out a beautiful pattern in a parking lot, so we took a picture, and it became inspiration for the Trellis pattern. BOTTOM More than the site of a handful of the country’s best haunted houses, the West Bottoms is a thriving place to work and play. BY BROOKE PEARL HISTORIC PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE WEST BOTTOMS BUSINESS DISTRICT ASSOCIATION LOCAL SHOP PHOTOS BY MATT KOCOUREK

WHEN AMBER ARNETT-BEQUEAITH INVITED ME TO SPEND the day with her in the West Bottoms, which is, as most of you know, a light industrial area and one of the oldest in the city, I thought I knew what to expect. But it was so much more — a hub of activity with tons of shopping venues; a self-sufficient destination for hundreds of travelers, both local and statewide; friendly faces; and local to a fault — this is the West Bottoms. Arnett-Bequeaith, vice president of Full Moon Productions (yes, the haunted houses), Group Real Estate and the West Bottoms Business District Association, led me from one local shop to the next with her uncle, Monty Summers, president of the three aforementioned organizations. This area of town, this community, is a fully functioning “city” in itself, implementing initiatives for safety, cleanliness and economic development, among others. And, they boast the lowest crime rate in KC. Logistics aside, this historic area houses artists’ studios, quaint shops, local restaurants, and a range of home and business services. It was enough to make me want to stay for the entire day…and return again soon. Liberty Belle, Bella Patina and Good Juju are three local shops that open to the public on the first weekend of every month — and they’re crazy busy every one of those days. These shops feature vintage, antique and repurposed furniture, decorations and embellishments — you’ll find anything you’ve ever wanted and then some. The Fleeting Flea, Bottoms Up and Architectural Reclamation Foundation are a few other local stores that carry more vintage finds, architectural salvage and home accessories.

Above.. From haunted houses and ghost tours to local, one-of-a-kind shopping venues, the West Bottoms offers something for everyone. Right... Historic West Bottoms during the 1903 flood (below) and Union Avenue in the 1900s (above). 84 • KCHANDG.COM

TO TOP During our stroll along 12th Street, we stopped into Jaskki’s Tobacco Café, where I had a delicious mocha; also featured is work from local artists and a Smoking Lounge Menu, too, if that interests you. After an all-day shop-a-thon, it’s nice to take a load off at any of the area restaurants, like Jerry’s Woodswether Café (which I hear is greasy but fantastic!); Golden Ox, a staple in the area; and the hip R Bar. Or maybe all you need is a quick pick-me-up, and for that I’ll be going to Amigoni Urban Winery. Sometimes, however, we need a little more help than a repurposed dresser can give, which is where the area’s home-service companies come into play, such as Quality Roofing, Cook Bros Insulation or CAS Woodworks (ArnettBequeaith has a custom kitchen island created by them). If it’s not your home but a body makeover you’re after, try Cardio Boxing by Aaron Blake or Pole Worx (something I’ve always wanted to try) to whip you into shape. After one trip, you’ll notice how the West Bottoms is like one big happy family, where everyone bands together in support of each other, but maybe I’m biased because I’m from a small town myself and appreciate the camaraderie. Either way, check it out to decide for yourself. And, keep your eyes peeled; sources say we might be seeing more “activity” in the future. Find out all you can on the West Bottoms at westbottoms.com.

FUN FACT

The Guinness Book of World Records recently visited the West Bottoms to add Full Moon Productions to the list as housing the largest snake in captivity in the world.

A Tasteful Grand Finale The end of last season left us salivating for the next.

C

hef Renee Kelly has a way with food. It’s homemade; it’s pretty; it’s delicious, especially when she casually whips up a menu that’s easy to prepare at home but looks — and tastes — impressive.

The Evening’s Menu: Endive with Caviar Popover with Braised Beef, Squash Purée and Cranberry Root Vegetable Ravioli with Celeriac Purée and Sage Butter Ginger Pear Cake

With a full house in Doolittle Distributing’s Lenexa showroom and Chef Renee on the menu, not only is preparing food fun, you learn a little something about the right tools for the job. (Tonight’s tidbit: get a sharpening steel for your knives and use every time you cut something.) Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery paired wines with each dish and debuted two new ones — Crimson Cabernet and Avalon. Feeling generous, Chef Renee drew four lucky names for free pastries and half off wine at Caenen Castle, where she hosts Thursday happy hour (seasonal), Sunday brunch and special events. It was the perfect way to ease into the holiday season and a memorable end to a fantastic year of food. Special Thanks to Our Partners: ddius.com somersetridge.com reneekellys.com

1. Heat oven to 375°F. 2. Toss the rutabaga, parsnip, garlic and olive oil together; season with salt and pepper. 3. Place on a baking dish and roast for 25 minutes or until soft. 4. Put the roasted vegetables through a food mill or a food processor until smooth. 5. Spoon the vegetable mixture in the middle of the wonton wrapper and seal the edges with the rice flour mixture. Place another wonton wrapper on top and cut out a “ravioli” with a round cookie cutter. 6. Heat a pot of water and cook the ravioli until it floats. 7. Heat a sauté pan and cook the bacon until crispy. Add the fresh tarragon and sauté for an additional minute. Add the butter and turn off the heat; stir until all combine. 8. Once the ravioli is cooked, pull out of the water and place in a dish, pouring the tarragon sauce over the ravioli. Inspiration: This ravioli is surprisingly creamy in texture. You can make it lower in calories by squeezing a fresh lemon over the cooked ravioli and serving with sautéed broccoli instead of bacon. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 • 89
