CONFIDENCE These four kitchens make bold statements with well-chosen details, dynamic focal points and updated work ethics. And just like all great parties end up in the kitchen, the house design started with that room. The incomparable exterior surroundings became the framework for an ingenious design solution: a perfectly round and rustic, come-as-you-are kitchen to accommodate a crowd, a bevy of cooks or solitary contemplation. “The kitchen has such a fluid motion, and besides that, it generates really interesting conversation,” notes Wendlandt, who says the kitchen’s circular shape is itself a strong design element. The room’s punctuation mark is the arc of south-facing windows that flood the space with natural light. The kitchen’s oak beams, Kansas limestone and custom-designed oak cabinetry were chosen to echo the rest of the home’s Arts and Crafts style. Earthy granite and porcelain tile is juxtaposed against the stainless steel KitchenAid appliances and Viking stove. A large butcher block that deFlon sketched out for a craftsman serves as an additional prep area. “This kitchen works the way we live,” deFlon says. “We have daughters, grandkids and other family who live nearby, so this is a gathering room.”

Leslie and Chuck Erickson of Fairway hired Matthew Hufft, Jonathan Tramba and Kimball Hales of the acclaimed Hufft Projects — known for strikingly innovative and enduring design — to build their new home that included a timeless kitchen that would serve as a welcoming arena for entertaining family and friends. “We wanted a kitchen that would pull off the feeling of a great room, with living and dining in one space,” says Leslie, who wanted to incorporate products and materials from her family’s business, Carthage Marble Corporation. The architects delivered a high-style kitchen totaling almost 500 square feet that not only makes a delicious statement but also functions as a piece of art. An 18-foot-long island of Calcutta Gold splashed with gray veins reads as a monolithic block with bookmatched slabs that add to the piece’s visual intrigue and anchors the room with a compelling focal point. “There’s really nothing flashy about this modern kitchen,” Hufft says. “The custom cabinets are simple and minimalistic, and the soothing light design was planned to target different activities.” The strategic, artificial lighting includes canned fixtures to highlight the back walls of 3x6 white subway tiles, cove accent lights to wash stark white high-gloss laminate kick area. matched the veneers throughout the kitchen,” he recalls. There are also a wide variety of quality levels and pricing in cabinets. “Just because it is custom doesn’t mean it is better,” Gillpatrick says. “Do research on the shop you are looking at and find out what their capabilities are.” Ask the following questions: How much of your work is new construction work, and how much is remodeling? Do your cabinets match any quality standards? How are your cabinets constructed? One of the best ways to qualify a cabinetmaker is to see their prior work. “If you are building a truly quality product that is worth what you are charging, then you should have a good bank of customers who would be more than willing to show off their homes,” explains Damian Altenhofen, owner of Altenhofen Cabinets in Linwood, Kan. “If the cabinetmaker doesn’t want you to, that should raise a red flag.” While commercial construction has specific building standards, residential does not. The Architectural Woodwork Institute, a trade association for woodworkers, specifies three levels of quality: economy, custom and premium. “Most residential cabinets are not built to an economy grade. A custom grade means it has a well-built box and door,” Altenhofen says.
What to Look For There are three main types of cabinets: frameless, face frame with overlay, and face frame with inset doors. Frameless is a standard European style, with no wood face frame and usually a seamless, unbroken appearance. Face frame with overlay has a hardwood frame and a door that hinges on the face and covers the frame. Inset doors on face frames sit within the cabinet opening, and the hinges are hidden. “The most common type is face frame PLEASE TURN THE PAGE 50 • KCHANDG.COM

with overlay, but in my opinion, this is inferior to the other two,” Gillpatrick says. Because the hardware mounts to the back of the cabinet and directly to the face frame, it creates points of failure. “A lot of people are familiar with drawers falling over time and door hinges that become loose. Those things are a lot less apt to happen when using a frameless type of construction,” Gillpatrick says. Good quality hinges and drawer guides are also important. “You’ll open a cabinet door or pull out a drawer a million times, so get quality hardware. You’ll notice that quality lasting for years to come,” Wilson adds. Another thing to ask about is if the cabinet shop prefinishes cabinets prior to

The Process The typical process for custom cabinets involves an initial consultation, cabinet design, materials selection and ordering, cabinet construction and finishing, and installation. The time involved varies on the size and complexity of the project. “Homeowners don’t realize that they are able to use their kitchen during most of the process and are only down three to four days for the actual installation,” Wilson says. Working with a local cabinet shop also means close interaction between the homeowner and the maker.

Wine refrigerators are designed to chill wine to the perfect serving temperature. A basic wine refrigerator is fine for keeping bottles you plan to drink within a year or two. The temperature and humidity can be monitored by using a special gauge inside the fridge. The temperature can be set between 45°F and 65°F, depending on the wines being chilled. Wine refrigerators maintain the proper temperature for wine without the constant opening and closing that can result in temperature fluctuations. Different styles of wine require different temperatures, so look for wine refrigerators with multiple temperature zones.
Wine Cabinets Wine cabinets are designed to store wine for a much longer period of time than a wine refrigerator. A number of factors can cause wine to “go bad” or turn during the aging process. Because wine can be a significant investment, it’s important to properly store bottles to avoid light, extreme temperature (heat or cold), vibration, excessive or not enough humidity, and dried corks (allows oxygen to leak into the bottle). The main purpose of a wine cabinet is not to just have bottles of wine on hand for consumption but to protect them. It also makes an ideal long-term storage solution because it holds an ideal climate like a cellar. To enjoy wine later, you want to provide conditions that improve the likelihood the wine will be

better over time. To determine the right size of cabinet, a good rule of thumb is to think about how much space you believe you need — then double it, since your collection is likely to grow. If you just need a cooler for chilling wines, consider how much you consume on a monthly basis. For those

Other Storage Considerations Alarms — If wine is an investment, some units have alarms that will sound if the temperature or humidity levels are at unacceptable ranges. Interior — The best units have an aluminum interior, which conducts cold and heat much better than the plastic used in less-expensive models. Look for a textured, pebbled lining, which helps maintain ideal humidity. Shelving — Basic wine refrigerators tend to have fixed chrome-wire shelves; higher-end models use sturdier wood racks or wood-framed wire grids. Always think convenience: Is the shelving adjustable? Are you able to remove bottles easily? Are you able to see wine labels? Vibration — Shaking is detrimental to wine over time, so look for stabilizing solutions such as compressors mounted on rubber blocks and coated racks that grip the bottles.

Renee Kelly fired up Kitchen Studio: Kansas City’s all-Viking kitchen, wafting delicious aromas throughout the studio and sending the summer season out in style. With bottles of NV Cristalino Brut Cava on hand (and then some) from Off the Vine Design & Cellar and platters of Weston-based Green Dirt Farm cheeses, guests found their seats around the range top island and surrounding kitchen vignettes for yet another hands-on demonstration with dinner and wine. Finding free-alliance fish isn’t as easy these days, but Chef Renee searched it out, prepared it then shared the appetizer with the “class.” As a bonus, guest Shannon Hoffmann, also owner of GreenAcres Market in Briarcliff, talked about what free alliance means, which is supporting sustainable fishery and responsible aquaculture practices. Adding to the fresh and local theme that Chef Renee is passionate about, she passed around watermelon and tomato gazpacho with basil oil, along with Vita Craft stainless steel cookware she used throughout the cooking demonstrations. She also handed out a dish of sorbet to tide the group over while patiently awaiting the entrée, which

These five baths know how to mix business with pleasure.
STORY BY CHRISTINE BUCHAN
BATHS USED TO BE THE SMALLEST ROOMS IN THE HOUSE, a place you were in and out of in a rush rather than somewhere you’d escape to. They were utilitarian, with no flourishes or luxuries (unless you count the rubber ducky). Today is a different story, with many expansions, inventions and amenities, from his-and-hers vanities, built-in cupholders and accent tile that steals the show. Here are five that speak to a new era of design.

When his empty-nester father moved to a new home in Westwood, Bryce Wittenborn of R3 Home Renovation got to work on a wholehouse renovation, including this clean-lined modern bathroom.

Tropical Breeze With its calming sand-and-surf hues and fivefoot jetted tub, this bathroom is the perfect place for the homeowners to bubble their troubles away. “The clients are big Jimmy Buffett fans, so we incorporated a bit of Key West style by using beachy colors,” says Allen Harris of ALH Home Renovations, who worked with interior designer Lisa Davis to achieve the laid-back look. The green glass and marble tile used in the border around the bathroom and in the shelved niche above the tub was the starting point for the bathroom’s design. Its distinctive look (and high-end price tag) means it works well as an accent, providing visual impact as a backsplash above the custom-built glazed maple vanity and standing out from the Portofino marble countertop and beige porcelain field tile used on the bath surround and floor. “There are a lot of really gorgeous glass tiles on the market now. The challenge is that it’s pretty expensive, but you can balance that out with a less expensive field tile,” Harris says. A column of that same luxury tile supports the brushed-nickel rain shower and stretches all the way to the ceiling, emphasizing its lofty height. “We’re seeing a lot more openness in bathroom design today,” says Harris, who raised the ceiling from its original eight to 11 feet to make it feel more spacious. “We wanted to accentuate that new height,” Davis adds. “That’s why we have both the box-out of green tiles in the shower and the brick-shaped field tiles running vertically up the walls.” Other key elements aiding the room’s open and airy feeling include the European-style glass shower walls and the zero-threshold shower, which gives the appearance of uninterrupted floor space. Though the original plan was to use an Old PHOTOS BY JAMES MAIDHOF
World-style chandelier over the tub, the freeformed pendant lighting fixture caught the homeowner’s eye in a local stained glass shop. “It reminded her of a jellyfish, so it works well with the seaside theme,” Davis says. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

create a unique look, and it’s a trend she’s seeing increase. In this case, the effect isn’t only aesthetically pleasing, it’s practical too. “The carpenter was able to reconfigure the dressers so almost all of the drawer space is still functional. The client actually has more storage space than she did with the bulky old vanity,” Vogler notes. Though it didn’t increase the actual footprint of the room, the renovation did result in a more spacious bathroom. Replacing the old garden tub with one that had a slimmer surround and positioning it efficiently afforded more floor space. OCTOBER 2010 • 79

No-touch faucet: Keep a cleaner sink and give off a thoroughly modern vibe with an electronic or infrared-sensor, hands-free faucet. Kristeen ArmstrongScott, CKD, of Armstrong Kitchens points out that many clients today are interested in the concept, which proves surprisingly affordable. Some units even run on battery power. Armstrong-Scott generally likes models like the Delta Touch 20 system, which uses four C batteries snapped into a Velcro-seal unit that attaches under the sink. “I notice that the Touch 20 is smart enough to turn itself off after four minutes of unintended operation,” she adds. “That should keep [my cat] from brushing against the faucet and flooding the room.” In-closet washer and dryer: Your closet is where your clothes should start and end their day. Instead of lugging laundry down stairwells or across the house, homeowners are now incorporating stacked washer and dryer units into their master bathroom closets. Who doesn’t want less work and more convenience? Of course, if you live with more than your spouse, you may still have to do other people’s laundry. Since tinier closet units cater to fewer garments than full-size versions, you will use them to accompany — not replace — your primary set. Bidet: For the ultimate in luxury — and perhaps a little European extravagance — try a bidet toilet seat. “The most fully equipped models are heated and offer temperature-

en years ago, Doug and Cheryl Linder called David Dussair, architect and builder of Design Build Team (DBT) — who also originally
built their contemporary 26-year-old home — to update their interiors,
including a hot tub room addition that overlooks the rustic backyard. Last November, Doug finally got the space he’d always wanted: a sauna haus. Originally slated to attach to the home, the modern Scandinavian-inspired sauna haus (Doug’s ancestors are from Sweden) is a stand-alone building in a part of the uninhabited timber just a few stepping stones behind the Linders’ home. Design Build Team hand dug level ground for a solid foundation for the modern-style cabin. “It’s very much a retreat instead of it being a part of the home,” Doug says. “It’s separate and charming and offers peacefulness.” Because Doug is 6-foot, 5-inches tall, he wanted a space with high ceilings, as well as unobstructed views of nature, a sitting room to relax and read, and a separate space for a sauna and shower. “I like a hot sauna and cold shower to get the juices going,” he says. Dussair fulfilled that wish list.

A sliding barn door, just one of Dussair’s sculptural endeavors, separates the lounge and sauna. The tile in the sauna/shower space mimics that from inside the house, along with brighter

orange tiled walls, a color that’s integrated into the slate flooring, too. “I wanted something that jumps out a bit,” he says of the orange color. The sauna, which Doug admits to using every Thursday, on Sunday evenings and in between if it’s not taken over by his daughters and their friends, seats about four to six people. “It’s a great place to get away from daily buzz,” says Doug, who’s a law professor at UMKC’s School of Law. The interiors call attention to a Swedish abstract tree that stands next to one of his daughter’s paintings and a modern red chair, while the building’s exterior is the same material as the main home, making it look as though it has aged with the home. To complement and enhance the connection between the two, landscape architect Joann Schwarberg designed beds of plants to surround the retreat, along with a cozy sitting/patio area. Using a vacant piece of land, recycled materials, and help from a friend/builder/ neighbor, Doug can enjoy his sauna-thenshower ritual that invigorates the mind, body and soul — while reveling in the surrounding privacy and peacefulness his new haus provides.

OUTDOORS Outdoor living areas are extensions of interior living spaces, so spruce up your outdoor space with these new additions.
Splinter-Free Flooring Yes, that’s right — no more splinters, slipping or maintenance required with Hastings Tile & Bath PLI Distressed Wood-Look Series. This product is designed to look like wood but is actually porcelain tile that comes in a majority of “wood” finishes that can be used both inside and out. Even so, there’s still no running by the pool. www.hastingstilebath.com

Fume-Free Fire Now, a fire can keep you warm without making your clothes smell like bonfire. The Outdoor GreatRoom Company’s new Venturi Flame Technology features a turbo disc that’s combined with a glass cylinder that creates a spinning sensation without the toxic fumes for an energy-efficient fire. Three different collections use biofuel gel, LP or NG gas, no matter which outdoor or indoor fire pit, table or place you buy. Overhead Cover The hood’s movin’ outside! Danver’s 32-inch deep stainless barbecue hood is the first of its kind for use outside. NOT Blinded by the Light How many door screens do you know of that do double duty? Centor Architectural offers the S1E Eco-Screen, a large, horizontal retractable screen and blind system for windows and doors that spans up to 24 feet. It’s available in two fabric classes: the Insect Mesh keeps insects out but still allows fresh air and natural light in, while the Solar (UV) Blind Control protects from UV rays and doubles as a projection screen inside and out for game days. The Eco-Screen is 80-percent recyclable and is easily controlled by the touch of a button. Each one purchased receives a five-year guarantee. www.centorarchitectural.com
Form AND Function Designed by Patricia Urquiola, the Kettal Maia collection showcases architecturally designed furniture for the outdoors. Elegance shines through in the artisan braiding, aluminum frame, and the new Porotex and chenille fabric. With its durable, sturdy frame and incredible attention to detail, these pieces — a rotating daybed, swing or deck chair — can withstand Mother Nature…and look good doing it. www.kettal.es/kettal

To and From Nature With a striking piece like this in your garden or outdoor living area, don’t wait ‘til the last minute to get it going. Start a fire, and lighten up the party with Stone Forest’s Suspended Fire Vessel. Truly a unique piece, the side supports are hand-carved from natural granite boulder halves, each displaying its own marks from the stonecutter. Weighing in at 300 pounds, the iron basin will develop a rust patina over time. Available

Back from the Future This overall concept intertwines a traditional grill, made of sheet steel and then powdercoated, with that of a futuristic-looking structure that was inspired by the looping shape of springs. The structural frame allows everything to clip to it, leaving easy access to the main grill area and attached side-serving table, which is available in a variety of hardwoods and plastics. Because the frame is made of durable materials, it can be left outside, but all parts can be removed easily for cleaning and storage. http://alimessom.com
