People are designing for the way they actually want to live. In this issue, we’re bringing you stories that feature stunning design in smaller spaces. (Did you know that even metal stair brackets can double as a design element?) Speaking of fabulous details, this ribbon chair (circa 1966) that I’m sitting on is by Pierre Paulin, who says “a chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful.” I asked the homeowner if I could have it when he gets “sick” of it. But that's enough about the interiors. Grab your gloves and hat and follow George and Carolyn Kroh’s lead (page 48) to get your garden in tip-top shape. We can finally bask in the sunshine outside rather than just periodically enjoying it through the window. It’s been way too long.

As many organization experts will attest, if a room is only serving one purpose, it’s not working hard enough. The same applies to the furniture in that room. No matter how large or small a home’s square footage, it’s rare to use the kitchen just for cooking or a coffee table just for holding remotes. Check out these double-duty pieces of furniture that bring

1. Reinvented Wall Storage No matter how large the bathroom, there’s always a need for more storage space. Mix-and-match wall units create the perfect storage solution. Choose a wall cubby with shelves for storage and display space, a traditional medicine cabinet to hide personal toiletries, and/or glass shelves with towel hooks. The units come in white and espresso. $99-$199. potterybarn.com

A COLOR FOR EVERY STYLE HARDIEPLANK SIDING

2. This Ottoman Does It All A living room can never have too many surfaces to set drinks, seating or storage for blankets, games and movies. The Crate & Barrel 17.5 leather storage ottoman offers all three in one compact frame and five colors. Place it next to a couch or group four or more for a versatile coffee table. Need storage in the bedroom? Place two at the foot of the bed for storage and seating. $169. crateandbarrel.com

3. Ha ndy High-Top Need a table? Want a desk? This storage-packed high table offers lots of surface space for dining, entertaining, working and crafting. Store dinnerware on one side and important office essentials on the other. The center cubby has a hidden cord-management system to keep

cords tidy and charge electronics. Leave the table freestanding or push it against a wall. $399. cb2.com

4. Storing Nighttime Essentials

913.829.8665 www.diamondco m pa nie s. ne t

Need a good book to fall asleep but don’t have space for a nightstand? Drift off with a headboard that features storage space for e-readers, stacks of books, glasses, photos and other nighttime essentials. For extra illumination, just flip on the built-in lights. The Lang bookcase headboard comes in twin, full, queen and king sizes. $179.99. nfm.com

5. It’s All in the Couch Having overnight guests is a given. Rather than store an air mattress, choose a sofa that hides its sleeping potential. The double mattress on the Ikea Kivik sofa bed takes up less floor space when extended because it opens parallel to the sofa’s back. But the truly amazing feature is the arms that unzip to reveal additional storage for those extra sheets and pillows. Choose from nine colors. $999. ikea.com

6. Bottom’s Up Entertaining guests? Set up the Lexington mirrored butler tray and make it easy for everyone to get glasses, drink refills and store their beverages while mingling. The mirrored tray and nailhead trim add a touch of glamour to a room, while the glassware and bottle slots add function. After the party, remove the tray, fold the base and slide it away. $259.95. zgallerie.com

7. So Organized! The Incognito Compact Office offers desk space on an as-needed basis and display space all the time. Inside, there are storage shelves, a gliding shelf for a printer and drawers with hanging file storage. It comes in mocha and ebony. $999. crateandbarrel.com MAY/JUNE 2013 |

PEOPLE WANT HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL, DECORATED SPACES, and they’re requesting that of doors now, too. It seems the traditional solid wood hinged door has been passed up for aesthetically pleasing pocket doors and those on track-and-roller systems, which are popular space-saving solutions. Pocket doors, which slide into the wall cavity, and wall-mounted sliding doors create a barrier-free entryway. They’re easy to install during construction and free up additional (and valuable) square footage, allowing more wiggle room in cramped and narrow hallways and closets. With new homes being built with less square footage, owners are maximizing all available space; installing doors that slide rather than swing allows them to utilize extra space for accessories, furniture pieces, or shelving and organizational units. And, adding doors with glass fronts or inserts distributes more natural light to both adjoining rooms, making small spaces feel bigger.

Doug Reine, owner of Reine Construction, says people are reverting back to the middle of the last century when a home’s front parlor, the gathering space that showcased family possessions located just off the foyer, was enclosed by sliding or pocket doors. But modern times have reinvented the concept. “People want a 12-foot-wide opening to a home office,” he says, which can be closed off with four sliding doors. “It’s about being able to have a door when you want. They’re impressive-looking and add a lot of character, a wow factor and functionality to a room.” While functionality is of high importance, looks count, too. Pocket doors can seamlessly blend into the wall, but wall-mounted sliding doors — when in use or not — also serve as wall art. Incorporating architectural doors or a repurposed flea market find can enhance your home’s style, like with the repurposed

light play Natural elements illuminate and expand a high-style River Market residence.

John O’Connell is a light man. He covets natural light and minimalistic design injected with jolts of color, and the beneficiary of that adoration is O’Connell’s sophisticated 2,100-square-foot River Market residence. The freestanding urban jewel box pays homage to an aesthetic of stunning simplicity achieved through well-conceived design elements. O’Connell’s space dances in abundant pools of natural light. Shafts angling through an exquisite custom-built oak-and-walnut floating staircase punctuate a bright green wall that serves as the home’s centerpiece. Natural light floods the main and upper levels, spotlighting O’Connell’s well-curated collection of mid-century modern furnishings, which includes a vibrant mustard-yellow vintage Knoll bird chair by Harry Bertoia; a black leather Herman Miller Coconut lounge chair designed by George Nelson; a circa-1950s Brown and Saltman sofa; and a 1966 Pierre Paulin lipstick-red ribbon chair. The story is in the details: Looking past the 1950s Swan chair, the pink leather dining room chairs are 1984 Italian Saporiti with lavender legs and chrome bases. The kitchen backsplash is 100-year-old walnut and was also used in the hood facia and under the stool alcove on the island.

“the home’s overall design couldn’t distract from or compete with john’s furnishings and art collection.” The original floor plan was rearranged to achieve more privacy, and a six-inch 25-foot-tall wall was constructed, extending from the lower level to the master suite. O’Connell imagined the floating staircase as a way to capitalize on function while creating drama. Rift-and-quartered white oak on the diagonal allows the eye to sweep across the open design on the main level, activating the space. The downtown cityscape, visible through the wrap-around windows in O’Connell’s dining room and master suite, is a priceless organic design component. “I can see the Federal building from here,” points out O’Connell, perched on a fuschia leather and chrome 1984 Italian Saporiti chair at a sleek custom-built white concrete dining table. “And this light pendant [Wig pendant by FontanaArte] hanging above the table reminds me of the Sprint Center’s design.” For O’Connell, who was raised on a farm in England’s countryside but had London’s amenities available within a 30-minute drive, this River Market location is the perfect place to put down roots. “I love nature, and the river and Berkley Riverfront Park are nearby,” he says. “Plus, the River Market and downtown are right outside my front door.” Indeed, O’Connell’s light-filled home is balanced with the perfect combination of color and impeccable materials to conjure up a very mod 1970s London with a 21st century sensibility — all co-existing in high-style harmony.

Kansas City may be home for one well-traveled young attorney, but there will always be a fondness for the East Coast urbanity of Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown, where he attended school. “Moving back to KC, I wanted to surround myself with the feel of living in the city,” he says. Located among a tight clutch of older buildings, the vintage high rise he selected matched his notion of living within close proximity to a fashionable shopping district with a midtown sensibility. “When I saw this fourth-floor space overlooking a cityscape of interesting façades, it struck a chord that here was my opportunity: I could have a hand in designing my own condo to match my lifestyle,” he recalls. “The building was being transformed from apartments into condos and was nothing more than a blank canvas when the homeowner and I first laid eyes on what was a one- and two-bedroom unit,” says interior designer Lisa Sanford Duncan. “Lisa suggested we take the two units and merge them into one 1,900-square-foot space –– exactly what I had in mind,” the homeowner says.

Left... Come Sunday morning, the homeowner wanted an entirely different feel to contrast with the sleek decor in the rest of the condo. He opted for a cozier study where a dramatic, stark landscape papers the walls. He even had French doors built to close off the area should it ever be turned into a second bedroom. Above... One of the most important concepts was to give each space a distinctive identity. “We did this by creatively bleeding one room into another. The homeowner is never that far away from one area to the next. Here, the kitchen, dining room and vestibule are all within eyeshot of one another,” Duncan says.

Left... A metal dining room table surrounded by six red leather pencil chairs is the perfect touch of ‘industrial’ that the homeowner finds engaging and indestructible. Serving as a divider between the living room, dining room and kitchen is a simple console table. One objective in the living room was to increase the light into the adjacent hallway. “We added a translucent glass window embedded with a design that can be thought of as art,” Duncan says. Above... The angles of the island were really important since the kitchen is the first thing you see when you walk in the door. As a result, the kitchen needed to be sleek yet functional. “All of the appliances are stainless, there’s a metallic mosaic backsplash that heightens shine in the space, plus glass is everywhere: on the raised countertops, on the cabinet fronts and on one floor-to-ceiling column. “I love the pendant lighting that plays up all of the interesting surfaces in this space,” the homeowner says. Above... The 17’-by-14’ bedroom is ample enough for sleeping, yet there was a desperate need for storage. The entire window wall was the logical area to tap without adding more furniture in the room. Because only walls separate neighbors, the homeowner had his closet built behind the bedroom as a buffer. Low-pile commercial-grade carpet in a soft silver sage enhances the overall decor. Right... Black granite and alder wood accents outfit the master bathroom filled with handsome amenities like vessel sinks and a steam shower. Since there’s no external light source in the room, the surfaces are deliberately reflective: iridescent turquoise mosaic tiles line the sink wall, white porcelain vessel sinks top the salt-and-pepper granite vanity and built-in alder wood cabinets house personal essentials. 42

StylishlyStashed Because the homeowner thoroughly researched the design and materials with diligence and determination, it made the interior designer’s and builder’s jobs much easier. “He knew exactly what he wanted,” says Duncan, admiring the homeowner’s maturity and level of taste for such a daunting task that spanned 13 months, particularly when it came to maximizing space. There were challenges regarding the design and mechanicals. The team worked hard to compartmentalize all of the storage areas, building floor-toceiling bookcases in the vestibule and constructing 8-inch-deep cabinetry under windows in the bedroom and in the dressing area. “We carved out a laundry niche in a corner, utilized unconventional shelving in the study and even lowered the ceilings to 7 feet 10 inches to accommodate new wiring,” the homeowner explains. Underscored with quiet functionality, the condo succeeds with a deliberate attention to conserve space yet maintain an uncluttered point of view. Duncan admits, “Everything here is meant to grab attention with edgy, good taste that’s imaginative yet creative. The result: one very happy homeowner –– which is extremely gratifying.”

STORY BY GLORIA GALE | PHOTOS BY MATT KOCOUREK Plants are thrilled to be growing in Carolyn and George Kroh’s garden. Whether sown from seed or gifted as volunteers, the Krohs’ yard is a gardener’s paradise, even though it wasn’t always as lushly defined. “When we saw this home, there was basically nothing here,” George recalls of the decades-old grounds measuring just shy of an acre. “Except for the big, old trees –– oaks, maples and other varieties that line the streets,” Carolyn interjects. Despite its former barren condition, after 24 years, the Krohs are reaping the benefits of their exuberant landscape. With little more than a patch of grass, these Master Gardeners have taken the grounds in hand. “Really, it’s been Carolyn’s passion,” George says, noting that his wife of 46 years will often slip outside for a few minutes only to reappear three hours later. Meanwhile, George contentedly tends to his vegetable garden in “the back forty.” Creating their garden with a decidedly casual, English feel was never a challenge for the couple. “Gardening has always been a part of my life,” says Carolyn, recalling how, while growing up, her father grew his special iris and roses.

She then taught her children to grow their initials in lettuce seeds in early spring, and now the grandchildren continue the tradition in their own yards. George, too, learned from his parents’ Victory Garden during WWII –– all which instilled a love for growing vegetables. “It’s something I continue today, not only in my own backyard but with the Kansas City Community Gardens that I’ve been involved with for at least 15 years,” he says. The couple admits that their garden is a composite of their lives and friends. Clippings and cuttings that abound throughout have been nurtured from gardener’s gifts acquired through the years. “Some plants are from friends who have passed on. As the plants appear each spring, I remember them and thank them posthumously for the inspiration,” Carolyn says. Her talent to coax and pamper plantings is constantly evolving. “It’s always a work in progress –– like life, it never remains the same,” she explains. It’s clear from the moment you step through the white picket fence that the expanse of yard has been meticulously planned. Facing west, Carolyn visualized the herb garden that was initially an empty patch of ground for 10 years before managing to plant with soil, bricks and plants. Now, the orderly space features a symmetrical English herb garden trimmed with dwarf boxwood. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Blueberries, strawberries, lemon thyme, St. John’s Wort, mint, basil, oregano, dill, chives and arugula, among others, brim from inside their brick borders, promoting a pharmacy of fragrance. Perennials abound on the garden’s west side, where a mix of shade and sun envelopes hosta, holly, hydrangeas, astilbe, bleeding hearts, forsythias, violets and redbuds. “So my welldefined garden of the spring will turn into a free-for-all garden by the fall, but it’s always full of surprises,” Carolyn says. She admires the curly willow that started from just a branch but is now fully grown before moving along into the deeply shaded woodland garden filled with sweet woodruff, varieties of Japanese maple, viburnum, lungwort, witch hazel, hellebores, azaleas, ferns, holly and ever-expanding hydrangeas, heavy with bloom. George patiently walks alongside Carolyn, crossing along the backyard’s north side to his vegetable patch. Unlike Carolyn’s carefully weeded gardens, George’s vegetable plot is bursting with bounty and not nearly as tidy. “I plant too much too close together and by summer’s end, we have far more than the two of us can eat,” he notes.

The entire east side of the Krohs’ property is banded with magnolias, viburnum, hosta, juniper, hornbeam and winter honeysuckle. Carolyn knows the hosta are sun-struck. “But they’ll come back in the spring,” she assures. The east side of the house is the newest area where the Krohs are attempting to grow grass, “In due time,” Carolyn sighs. This shady side of the garden is framed with hosta, lady’s mantle, roses, hydrangeas, sweetspire and oak-leaf hydrangeas –– like much of the rest of the garden, this is an area that bursts with color in the spring. A brick patio anchored with a decades-old maple centers the yard. “The patio was here when we bought the house –– all we’ve done is add an ivy border to increase the dimensions. Our son, Brent, gave me a pond we installed in the corner for a Mother’s Day gift one year, so it’s a relatively new feature,” Carolyn says. The front yard, like the back, is picture-perfect. Fringed with purple beech, roses, boxwood, dogwood maples and hydrangeas, among others, the Kroh home welcomes family and friends. Last year, the Krohs participated in the annual Johnson County Master Gardener’s garden tour, which drew more than 2,000 people. There’s always work to be done in the garden for this couple who can’t imagine not getting their hands dirty. “It is this experimentation and surprise that keep me gardening and will do so for a long, long time,” Carolyn says.

Builder Mark Halloran lives the lake life in style at Porto Cima. Sto ry by J i l l H i l b r e n n e r

P h o t o s by M at t Ko c o u r e k

“I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted,” Mark Halloran says of his Porto Cima lake home. That idea was to create a stylishly masculine yet inviting retreat in the heart of the Ozarks. Two years ago, his luxe home design started with a single photo. Halloran, the president of Halloran Construction in O’Fallon, Ill., was no stranger to creating a home away from home. He’d owned a previous lake house at the point, but sold it and opted for a new space on a cove, allowing better boat access. When he moved, he shifted his design intentions away from the cozy neutrals of his old property to bolder pops of blue, with intricate textiles.

Halloran’s interior designer, Laura Strohm-Armstrong of Patricia Schmidt Interiors, recalls that the inspiration was a Ralph Lauren magazine ad. “He said that he wanted sort of a nautical look but not to go overboard since it was a lake,” Laura recalls. “We’ve worked together so long, she knows what I like and don’t like,” Halloran says of his 15-plus year design collaboration with Laura. When they visited the home — a six-bedroom, eight-bath property — in January 2011, Laura took hundreds of photos while noting his vision for the space. Also a pilot, Halloran wanted aviation to influence the look. And though the space had to be striking, it needed to hold up to typical lakeside revelry. The two had created a colorful oasis by summer, with unique accents, rich fabrics and unexpectedly practical pieces at every turn. Halloran makes it to his lake house about 10 times a year, enjoying the weekends he can with his son Evan, sister Lynn and brother-in-law Doug, along with their friends. He’s planning another home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but won’t be abandoning the Ozarks. After all, it’s only a quick flight to his impeccably decorated escape. “It takes me about 38 minutes to get there,” Halloran says.

A Plano, Texas, designer tweaks a recently remodeled Italian-style villa on the main channel near Ketchum. Mona and Rick Crider, former Oklahomans, had spent many a summer on Grand Lake’s clear and clean waters. Out on the boat with her brother and sister-in-law, everyone would joke “there’s Mona’s house” when they glided by a small cottage seemingly plucked off the hillsides of Positano, Italy, and deposited among similar craggy terrain jutting down to the main channel of the lake. “I would ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ every time we went by,” remembers the full-time Plano, Texas, resident. “We had a Hill Country lake home that slept up to 13 people at the time. That’s a lot of work. All I need is a small cottage.” Small, indeed. The 750-square-foot abode had been built in the 1950s and turned into a fishing cabin when the previous owners took possession. After a trip to Positano, the couple redesigned the home and grounds to reflect their travels. “That’s when they built the guest house and brought in 40 tons of rock for the gate and stairs,” Mona recalls.

Above... There is, in fact, more outdoor living space than there is interior space, including two terraces and a patio outside the main house’s bedroom. “You feel like you’re on the ballast of a ship, right there on the water… boats come by and talk to you from the water,” Mona says. “At the same time, the way the house is positioned, you almost can’t tell you have neighbors.” Right... “When you pull in the driveway, you can’t see the house, only the gate. The designer did a great job of intriguing visitors, letting the actual property reveal itself,” Mona says.

The whitewashed walls held their own in contrast to a warm, reclaimed wood ceiling with rough support beams. A 700-square-foot guest house up the hill featured a single bedroom and bath with the same reclaimed aesthetic. Above... A single long and narrow space comprises the living room, the core of the main house. The TV and fireplace are inset side by side below a reclaimed wood mantel, with a conversational seating arrangement around it. Mona confidently mixes eras with success; for instance, an 18th-century cabinet behind the sofa paired with a mid-century lamp base and modern-day shade. Right... A restored 17th-century chandelier hangs over the dining table. Mona found the early 1800s Santos box from Belgium with its original blue paint and had to have it for a pop of color and conversation. “I try to add history, but it’s most important that the space not only looks pretty but functions, too,” she explains.

But her love of antiques ends at most furniture she’d sit on. “We enjoy the comfort and scale of upholstered furniture we have today,” she notes. “Besides, you need a mix of styles. You don’t want everything to look 100 years old.” One of the biggest changes the Criders made to the house was adding window boxes and twin pergolas to the front of the house (the front, considered by most lake homeowners, being the side that faces the water). “They really give the house dimension,” Mona says. A terrace full of pots came with the house, and the Criders learned that first year what plants they could keep alive when they weren’t around. The previous owners lived in Tulsa and swung by once a week to water; the Criders added drip lines on timers to cover their longer spans away. In the future, the couple may add a garage, but only as long as the new building doesn’t compete with views of the water. For now, they simply enjoy their cozy home for what it is. “It’s magical,” Mona says. “You feel like you’ve been transported to another place. We can go to Italy for the weekend and not have to get on a plane.” Above... The guest house is only slightly smaller than the main house, containing a single bedroom and bathroom but just as much style. A largescaled armoire is the only storage in the space. Mona acquired the vintage swimsuits through her interior design shop in Texas.

Right... All storage in the main house is built in; there are no closets. In Mona and Rick’s bedroom in the main house, the bed is surrounded by tall closets for hanging items and shoe dividers under the bed. “There’s a lot of hidden space. It’s very efficient,” Mona says. Far right... The kitchen was remodeled with new appliances, but it has an aged patina with whitewashed cabinets. The light over the stove is a French commercial exterior streetlamp. “It has perfect proportions, “ Mona notes.

CRYSTAL CLEAR Praise to Walmart’s heiress who has endowed world-class art in a most unlikely location. STORY BY GLORIA GALE

PHOTOS COURTESY OF CRYSTAL BRIDGES MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

WOODEN SHIPS, JAPANESE-STYLE PAVILIONS OR ANCIENT ROUNDED MOUNTAINS undulating through the forest. All could be construed while studying architect Moshe Safdie’s powerfully created Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. After a decade of planning and construction, the museum in the Ozark hills is finally completed. Safdie’s rendering is located in Bentonville, Ark. at the behest of its patron, Alice Walton, Sam’s only daughter. Known to be unpretentious (even though she’s the thirdrichest woman in the world), Ms. Walton has embellished her galleries with a superb overview of American art reaching back to colonial times then forward into the modern era. Top: Overall view of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Above: The 20th-century art gallery wing at the Museum. Walton didn’t grow up exposed to much art, but as an adult she developed strong appreciation and amassed an outstanding private collection that, with the help of a billion-dollar Walton Family Foundation gift, she shares free of charge.

Offering The Finest For Over 25 Years

Bentonville, Walton’s home for part of the year (the other half spent in Texas), up until this point, wasn’t exactly a cultural mecca. But because the museum now sits on sprawling acreage that was once Walton’s backyard, the land, all 120 acres, was the perfect site for this structure. Safdie blended his architecture into the stands of hickory and oak and rocky terrain to create a museum that looks indigenous to the topography –– a hallmark of his genius. At Crystal Bridges, the architecture is unabashedly as important as the art it contains. This museum has plenty of drama but takes its time to emerge. First, there’s the woods, laced with six winding paths that display sculpture along the trails. A massive clearing reveals the building, but only the tip top. Like Safdie’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, along with his projects scattered throughout the world, the Boston-based architect marries art seamlessly with the environment. Sculptor Roxy Paine’s Yield, a 47-foot metal tree, greets visitors at the entrance to the museum, but nearly everything else is

housed below, anchored within curvaceous copper-clad and glass pavilions suspended over two spring-fed ponds. Four stories down, the museum presents itself. As if the stunning modern façade isn’t enough, it takes awhile to move inside, where glass, copper and Arkansas pine merge and span the exhibition space. The collection features heavy hitters from Stuart, Eakins and Durand to Benton, Rockwell, O’Keeffe

and Warhol, yet the tour of art isn’t overwhelming. It’s a compact journey, and unlike hulking museums with massive collections, there’s little chance of boredom; if the art doesn’t enthrall, the architecture will. Adults and children are welcome to take advantage of not just the exhibitions but the library, on-site restaurant, drop-in art studio, trail and gallery tours, Experience Art studio and an informal drawing class. Crystal Bridges is open Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. crystalbridges.com

Tender Loving Care

It’s the simple things in life that make us happy –– good food, good wine and good company, all of which were present at our last Cooking School. Peak at Home provided a cozy kitchen showroom that was taken over by Chef Charles d’Ablaing with The Raphael Hotel and 26 of our closest Cooking School friends. For him, it’s also about simplicity, quality ingredients and solid recipes that don’t require a lot of fluff to create a memorable meal: He uses water, not stock, in his risotto (vegetarianfriendly); he prefers cooking with butter over olive oil; and he cures his own prosciutto. Simply put, one bite of anything on his menu guarantees a return visit. Photos by Matt Kocourek

2 oz. butter 1 oz. vegetable oil 1 C dry white wine 1 1/2 oz. white onion, chopped 1 lb. Arborio rice 1 1/2 qts. water, heated 1 C fresh green peas 6 oz. jumbo lump crabmeat 2 oz. chives, chopped 4 oz. Parmesan, grated

Guests enjoying a glass of Somerset Ridge’s Crimson Cabernet. DIRECTIONS:

Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until soft. (Do not brown; they should be translucent.) Add the rice and sauté for 3-5 minutes more, making sure the rice is coated well and beginning to caramelize. Add the white wine and stir until almost dry then begin to add the water, about 1 C at a time. Stir over medium heat until the rice is almost dry and all the liquid has been incorporated. Repeat this process until the rice is cooked but still has a slight bite (the rice should be creamy) then add the peas. Just before serving, fold in the crabmeat, chopped chives, butter and Parmesan.

June 23 is the big day — that’s when the St. Jude Dream Home (estimated at $550,000) will welcome its new homeowner(s).

Here’s a sneak peek of a few key spaces and design details you’ll find inside this home, which features a “relaxed elegance combining natural elements, metals, patterns and pops of colors to create a look that feels modern for today’s family,” says Darrell Naeger, the on-staff designer for Summit Custom Homes. “Every year it is a group effort, and we couldn’t make it happen without our vendors who donate their time and materials.” The ultimate goal is to sell 10,000 tickets, which would surpass the $1-million mark for St. Jude this year. If that goal is met, the Kansas City market will have raised more than $3 million for St. Jude in the last three years. “St. Jude is an amazing organization that treats children with critical cancer who have no other hope of survival, all without charge to the patient and their family,” says Jake Loveless, director of purchasing and permitting for Summit Custom Homes.

A+ for Organization With its custom-designed cabinetry, a variety of storage options, and warm Wheat Penny on the walls, the craft/gift wrap room off of the kitchen “should appeal to busy moms,” Naeger says.

A Warm Welcome The entryway is open, airy and filled with natural light. The crisp white columns and custom trim complement the dark hardwood Shaw floors, while the color palette on the main level offers a fresh look, with neutral caramel and gray on the walls.
