SOME OF OUR

FAVORITE THINGS

The Polar Express was our favorite book to read every Christmas. Each of my boys had a special Christmas morning where they found a silver bell under the tree with a note: “Always believe in your heart” — Santa Claus. The bell still rings for us. ~ RENÉE DEMOTT, PUBLISHER I absolutely love decorating (and accessorizing!) for Christmas each year. With holiday music blaring in the background, it’s a fun process decorating our real Christmas tree. ~ BROOKE MCGRATH, EDITOR My grandmother used to make different crocheted ornaments filled with candy that she placed by our dinner plates each year. ~ DARIN BENSON, ART DIRECTOR This Santa has set on our mantel every year since I can remember. Just seeing it brings back those childhood feelings of joy and excitement. ~ BRENDA MITCHELL, ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR I collect Christmas trees for my home. Rather than having one big tree, I have lots of little trees. Merry is my favorite! ~ MARLA WESTRUP, ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE The angel ornaments I am wearing as earrings are two of my favorites that Grandma Wanda gave me when I was young. I can tell they’re going to be heirlooms because my daughter Sophia wants to play with them. I’ll have one to give her and one for new baby sister Tessa. ~ ANDREA DARR, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR My parents started my ornament collection when I was two. I have a blast decorating the tree while telling my kids stories about the memories associated with each ornament. While I still collect, I’ve started collections for both of them too. ~ MARY PARKER, ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE My aunt in Minneapolis has been collecting Patience Brewster Krinkles ornaments for me for as long as I've been putting up a tree! Having them up each Christmas makes her a little closer (without having to brave the Minnesota winter!). ~ TAMARA T YREE, ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

From all of us at KCH&G, here’s wishing you all of your favorite things this holiday season.

Holiday Spiced Truffle

André’s Confiserie Suisse has been a heralded destination in Kansas City for 55 years. A third-generation chocolatier, René Bollier’s culinary dreams started at age 5 while working with his father, Marcel, and grandfather, André. “I began with the simplest of tasks and slowly worked my way up, learning as much as I could from my family,” René says. He also spent three years in Switzerland, training under top Swiss pastry chefs. René acknowledges that all the training has helped create recipes like this holiday spiced truffle. Perfect for those cold winter months, this delectable nugget has a pinch of spice “to warm your throat while the rich flavors of our chocolate tantalize your taste buds.” Find the recipe online at kchandg.com/spiced-truffle

Raspberry and Chocolate Mousse Cups When Dean & Deluca opened its doors in December 1997, Brandon Henderson made a beeline to this gastronomic destination, where he now manages every department. “What’s gratifying is the entire crew’s passion for the products and the luxury of offering the complete epicurean experience,” he says. One of those talented people is Pastry Chef Jason Provo, a JCCC student, who’s finally realized his culinary acumen. Jason loves it when he’s up to his elbows in batter, or, in this case, Raspberry and Chocolate Mousse Cups. Find the recipe online at kchandg.com/mousse-cups

Ridiculously Easy Milk Chocolate Fudge Blessings come from batching up big. That’s what Tekia Thompson, otherwise known as the Dean of Deliciousness at The Culinary Center of Kansas City, whisks. Her silky fudge recipe is so tempting (and so easy, she says) that it glistens. Tekia manages a hefty schedule as chef and administrator of the Culinary Center’s more than 600 cooking classes and counts sweet tea and fried chicken as favorites. This southern belle is all about good cheer spread with ease, especially at this most wonderful time of year! Find the recipe online at kchandg.com/milk-chocolate-fudge

Panettone Bread Pudding Testing recipes is tradition in the Mirabile family. “In fact, we test every Sunday,” Jasper Jr. says. He knows that loyal customers count on the high standards that this venerable 45-year-old family restaurant maintains. Tradition is the passion that fuels Jasper’s incessant desire to learn the “how-to” then adapt the finest Italian dishes found throughout the world, especially during the holiday season. The legend of Panettone, the Bread of Toni, has it that a Milanese baker had no dessert to offer his guests one Christmas, so a mere kitchen boy named Toni prepared a sweet bread. It was so good that he won the praise and honor of the owner and guests and was now worthy to marry the daughter of the owner of the bakery. “This is one of my favorite holiday desserts that I have featured at the restaurant for many years,” Jasper says. Sweet Brittle with Savory Bacon Le Taillevent, Park Avenue Cafe and the Museum of Modern Art are notable restaurants where Executive Chef John Smith bolstered his skills. Now settled into the lead at Leawood’s Pig & Finch Gastropub, he features this crunchy treat originally developed by Grant Hitsman, pastry chef at 801 Chophouse Des Moines. This smoky and salty “pub snack” pairs a sweet brittle with savory bacon — a true bacon fest! Holidays or not, for those who love anything bacon, this brittle is sure to disappear quickly. Ginger Snap Strips In December 2004, 3 Women and an Oven opened the doors to its retail space in Overland Park. Thousands of desserts later, owners Jayne Torline and Stacey Webb, plus a crew of skillful hands, continue to make magic by cracking eggs, whisking sugar and sprinkling in flour for their marvelous creations. “When a cake is part of a special moment or memory in someone’s life, we are honored to be part of that special celebration,” Jayne says. “We just can’t imagine doing anything else.” A personal favorite for this time of year is anything with aromatic spices, such as these ginger snap strips. “Women Serving and Supporting the Community” Johnson County Young Matrons (JCYM) has had the great fortune of hosting the Home for the Holidays Homes Tour for 22 years. This event is the organization’s major annual fundraiser and wouldn’t be possible without the philanthropic-minded homeowners. These families open their homes to local designers who sweep in and transform lovely homes into holiday masterpieces. It takes months of planning, but all the homes are now decorated and ready for the public to walk through on Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 9:30 a.m-8 p.m. The homes on tour this year are located in Colton Lakes and Heritage Hills West. "We are grateful to our homeowners for allowing us to showcase these beautiful properties decorated for the holidays, to our designers and underwriters for their contributions, and to the community for their support of

our Tour,” says Diane Marshall, JCYM president. “All of this makes it possible for us to return 100 percent of our profits to our philanthropies and JCYM scholarship recipients.” Each home has partnered with one or more interior designers as well as tablescape designers for a professionally decorated look. All designers, some returning from last year, some new, will be creating stunning holiday decor that will offer tourgoers creative ideas for their own homes. Don’t forget to stop by the free two-day boutique at the Ritz Charles on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from noon-10 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Find more than 50 vendors representing shops and boutiques from around the metro area. Not only do you have a one-stop shopping opportunity but you also can feel good that 20 percent of your purchase benefits JCYM’s philanthropies. Puttin’ on the Glitz, a special event held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, will feature a dinner and fashion show. Tickets are on sale at jcym.net. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Colton Lakes Situated in Colton Lakes, this warm and inviting two-story stucco and brick traditional family home lives larger than expected. The bright, open entryway is anchored by a curved staircase decorated with an ornamental iron railing and a striking patterned carpet in earth tones. The open dining room, to the left of the entry, is framed by bay windows and accented with crisp white woodwork that contrasts nicely against the warmth of the wood floor. The dining room’s bay window is repeated in the light-filled formal living room. The homeowner’s use of an industrial-style coffee table is an eclectic but interesting complement to the contemporary furnishings throughout the room. A see-through marble fireplace in the living room connects to a stone-faced fireplace in the family room, with a large, open kitchen beyond. Wide, arched doorways lead from the family room to an enclosed addition (a former porch) featuring a slate stone fireplace perfect for reading or watching TV. Faux-painted walls, leather upholstered barstools, textured fabrics in the sofa and warm hues make for a handsome family gathering spot. Tucked under the stairs off the kitchen is a small door beckoning the little people of the house into a miniature playroom with just enough space to make mischief or magic. Did they leave a few handprints behind on the walls? A generous, oversized master bedroom suite, including a spa bath and large walk-in shower located just up the stairs on the second floor, is the perfect retreat from a busy day, while the spacious lower level, enhanced by a rich multicolored stone floor, includes a full bar; large, casual dining area; and exercise room. This is definitely a home that’s perfect for making family memories.

RUTH GREEN, MY FAVORITE THINGS

15 2 21 P E R RY S T. , OV E R L A N D PA R K

Colton Lakes

Ruth and her designers enjoy taking holiday decor and creating a colorful, warm and festive home for the holidays. This holiday season, she was inspired by this beautiful home and the love of family! Ruth says that the house will speak for itself, reflecting love and many cherished traditions and memories held by this family. A mixed palette of colors –– bronze, gold, green and red –– will be the common thread that welcomes those who drop in for holiday cheer or an intimate gathering of friends and family. Beautiful trees, lots of greenery, and touches of color and whimsy make this home an inviting place to create memories and celebrate the joy of the season!

A majestic blue spruce evergreen guards the front door of this stone and stucco home with Craftsman-style accents. In the entry, stairs accented with patterned carpet and a decorative wrought iron railing divide the light-filled office on the left from the large traditional dining room on the right. Glimpses of the lake through a wall of windows beyond invite the visitor into the formal living room. Furnished with four tailored chairs, this elegant room is just right for conversation and relaxing views of the lake. Throughout the main living area, rich hardwood floors and wall tones stand out against the crisp white trim and woodwork. The picture above the see-through fireplace in the family room reflects the homeowners’ love of New York City. A large, open archway leads to the spacious island in the kitchen, which is filled with cabinetry that mirrors the opposite wall of cabinets in the family room. Beside the kitchen, the outdoor screened-in living room is framed by stone walls and a large see-through fireplace that connects with the family room. Access to the lake for casting or fly-fishing practice is just beyond the porch stairs. Located on the upper level of this home, the large master suite includes a sitting area and fireplace. Down the hall, the children’s rooms feature a feminine bathroom with pink-and-black-striped wallpaper, a table set for a tea party, and a fashion-themed bedroom decorated in silver, black and grey. An oversize mirror opens up the stairs leading to the large, roomy lower-level entertainment area and mother-in-law suite. A playroom under the stairs and a bar area complete this space. Views both in and around this home encourage charming lake and community living. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

CRAIG SOLE, CRAIG SOLE DESIGNS

“The holiday season has a hard time living up to our expectations. Entertaining isn’t really effortless, and those pesky strands of lights can test our seasonal good cheer. So when we pull a look together, I like to add to a customer’s previously stored decor and change the ribbons or the room placement to make it feel like the homeowner spent Sunday afternoon watching the game while futzing with the mantel. Not too contrived, but you can’t win Project Runway if you are always safe!”

TABLESCAPE DESIGNER:

DAVE BRUNDAGE

“This season we have infused a modern interpretation of the bold and exciting Greek key and quatrefoil graphics. When combined with our rich gold and silver metallic finishes, it will create a beautiful presentation. After many years, we are reintroducing our signature black. Together with emerald, the Pantone color of the year, we’ll highlight these two striking yet grounding colors in our seasonal collections.”

The façade of this award-winning Colonial-style home with majestic columns and inviting veranda is a beautiful prelude to what lies beyond. With the help of creative architectural elements and sophisticated textures, the owner of Madi Mali Homes designed and built a remarkable home for his family. The double curved staircases, carpeted in a diamond-style pattern, contrast beautifully with the rich black-veined Carrera marble floor in the foyer. The luxurious dining room on the left features an intricately designed ceiling with multilayered wood trim and inlaid medallions. Two crystal chandeliers are reflected in a handsome mirrored-and-glass inlaid table designed exclusively for this space by the homeowner. To the right of the foyer, the music room showcases a grand piano elegantly positioned atop a calfskin-style rug. The office, richly bathed in red jewel tones and accented with black trim, features a floating fireplace among the builder’s gallery of home collections. The adjoining and expansive formal living room, family room and kitchen area creates an open, magical space. The soaring ceilings, topped off with a 23-foot atrium, glow at night. In the formal living room, whimsical artwork placed high above on the fireplace wall, oscillating ceiling fans and mirrored inset cabinet fronts continue the eclectic vibe that flows throughout the house. The lower-level lounge is reminiscent of Hollywood Art Deco glamour days. Stainless and brushed chrome tiles, glass, mirrors, pewter-infused porcelain floor tiles and crystal-accented light fixtures add to the glitz and glamour. So as to “not take oneself too seriously,” the homeowner designed and built a wall fashioned from leftover wood pieces that he cleverly arranged to hold wine bottles. The state-of-the-art outdoor living area includes a cabana, sport pool, bar area for dining and a hot tub.

TERRI MANCUSO, KC SURROUNDINGS “This Prairie-style home will remind you of Christmas past. It is sure to warm your heart and reflect a loving family enjoying the holiday season.” TABLESCAPE DESIGNER:

Heritage HillsWest After moving walls and adding a new kitchen location, this inventive homeowner took the original Arts and Crafts bones of this house from modern to the organic, natural Craftsman style it successfully demonstrates today. As you enter through the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired leaded glass door, the quality is apparent in the hand-scraped hardwood floors, Venetian-style textured walls, and natural stacked stone on the fireplaces and pillars. Arched doorways open up the large kitchen that features distressed, cream-colored cabinets. A

“Dressing a table for a variety of events this season will be a joy. With a well-stocked pantry of must-have core items, start with a foundation for a simple holiday brunch to an elaborate dinner party and anything in between, and infuse color and pattern. Layer a few chargers for texture and the perfect holiday glassware for sparkle. Lastly, learn to swap out a few key pieces so you can take the same table setting from day to evening. wall of windows over a farmhouse sink frames the bucolic view of the backyard pool and lake beyond the property. The stylish Aga gas range, the focal point of the kitchen and the pride of the homeowner, matches the black tone of the contrasting island and refrigerator cabinet. Furnishings upholstered in leather, cowhide and animal prints continue the organic “prairie earth” vibe of this unique home. A touch of whimsy can be seen in the office light fixture as multicolored lampshades are hung upside down like a balloon bouquet. The lower level is resplendent in stainless and brushed chrome accents,

mirrored walls and sparkling chandeliers. A game of pool, the latest movie on the projection theater screen, or relaxing by the stainless tile clad fireplace make for entertaining evenings. Outside in the fantasy backyard is a full kitchen and professionally landscaped area with a pool and slide. The fire pit at the edge of the property and the sport court nearby are perfect for seasonal activities. The detached carriage house includes a one-bedroom apartment with a ceramic weathered wood tile floor, marble kitchen counter and light fabrics reminiscent of the beach. When it’s time to decorate for the holidays, putting ornaments on our 12-foot tree sparks a collection of memories. It has gone from sparsely covered to abundantly full with Christmas ornament souvenirs from our numerous family trips. To name a few, there’s the lobster from Martha’s Vineyard, the fake gingerbread cookie our grandson tried to eat from Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, and the

DESIGNER/FLORIST FLORAL DESIGN INC./RANDY NEAL Holiday romance is in the air as you step into the grandest of entrances at the Starke home. taxi from the first time we took the kids to New York to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The nutcracker collection displayed on the dining room buffet also reflects our experiences over the years. We started with the usual suspects: Clara, the Mouse King, the Sugar Plum Fairy and, of course, the Toy Soldier. We then added a Viking from a Minnesota trip and Millennium Man, who saluted the new millennium with a wooden top hat and bottle of champagne. For a little Christmas cheer year-round, we have a brightly colored red, gold and black painting called Asian Holiday by Kansas City artist Jeffrey Owen Hanson that hangs over the fireplace.

Decorating for the holidays is a major production in our home. We decorate every room, some with two or three trees, and when all is said and done, we have about 12 throughout the house. The color scheme is generally gold and cream, sometimes also silver, and each tree has a theme. For example, in our lower level, we have a spacious, oldgentleman’s library with an Egyptian tree as well as

trees decorated in French themes that match our traditional, French and Italian-influenced home, including a small candy tree chock-full of little cupcakes, candies, etc. There’s also the Travel Tree, the Fabergé Egg Tree and our largest, the 12-foot Santa Claus Tree that has eight boxes worth of ornaments and such on it. Our holiday season begins in October when we start decorating some of the trees on the lower level before kicking it into high gear the day after Halloween. We’ve been doing it since we built the house in 1999, and now we’ve almost got it down to a science!

Our home is conducive to dinner parties and entertaining. Its best feature is the open first floor, including the kitchen, living room and dining room. Because our lifestyle is all about entertaining and having people over, it’s the perfect layout for us! To decorate for the holidays, we use the traditional

ornaments garnered from Beth’s 36-year career with the company. Every year she purchased several ornaments, each evoking its own special memory of things going on in our life or special interests for that year. Examples include several horses from the rocking horse series, the friend tea time ornament that reminds us of someone who has since passed away, and a picture frame ornament from when we got our new puppy. The tree is a nice, attractive feature that we can enjoy from the large and spacious kitchen, where our family and friends tend to gravitate. We love this, as it fosters an informal gathering ambiance and makes people feel comfortable in our home.

Our home is a blend of traditional and Old World, with a large first floor and an open floor plan. We built it years ago with our family of six in mind (four kids ages 10, 11, 14 and 16), particularly in the kitchen and along the counter where family and friends always seem to gather. And, with (almost all) teenagers, there is generally food involved in every discussion! Our holiday decorations change from year to year. We used traditional red, green and gold last Christmas; however, we also have purple, silver, rust and brown decorations. The one constant color we usually use is red. Accent pieces are from Chip’s Santa collection as well as our girls’ nutcracker collection. Even though the kids are now 18-23 years old, they still get excited to wake up on Christmas morning to see what the jolly ole man has left them. After opening our gifts, we enjoy a special Christmas breakfast of scrambled eggs and sweet rolls before the grandparents arrive with more gifts and food.

DESIGNER/FLORIST THE MONARCH FLOWER COMPANY/KELLY ACOCK What a magnificent home in which to create a charming holiday floral setting! One of my passions is utilizing repurposed and redesigned elements to create interesting and awe-inspiring focal points. These can include platters, frames and cups…anything that one might not normally encounter among traditional Christmas tree decorations. Taking items that the homeowners already possess and augmenting them with other objects often inspires people to create their own new, everyday decor elements.

We built our home six years ago in a wonderful neighborhood where our neighbors are more like family than just friends. For the past three years, we have hosted a Christmas party for more than 130 people, featuring joyful Christmas music that can be heard blocks away and Santa telling a story to all the children gathered at his feet while one of his elves hands out jingle bells that can only be heard by those who “believe.” Our holiday celebration actually starts on Halloween

One of our favorite parts of the holiday is Stephanie’s love of cooking and baking. One of our special family holiday traditions is making toffee together. We use Tricia’s Grandpa Wilkins’ secret recipe and deliver it to family and friends on December 24. We seem to be very popular that month, and not a week goes by without finding a returned toffee tin from last Christmas on our front steps.

Christmas is a special time in our home because a great deal of it is centered around our children. In addition to our regular tree, we have a children's tree adorned with their handmade ornaments and some purchased at Hallmark. On Christmas morning, the younger children pass out the presents, and we all enjoy sitting around and watching the unwrapping magic happen! In addition to the traditional red and green holiday colors, our holiday decorating includes several Norman Rockwell ornaments and a white nativity scene. When we entertain, family and guests typically congregate in the great room or kitchen. The extra activity here during the holidays continues to provide us with memories we will cherish for years to come.

This Is Where Shopping Is Fun! The very reasons we love the holiday season can be our undoing. The lights, the sparkle, the smell of pine needles, the gifts that must be wrapped “just so,” the perfect gifts for friends and family on our holiday lists –– it is exhausting to contemplate, let alone accomplish! The Holiday Boutique just might be your solution for gift selecting, home decorating, open-house planning, and finding those darling holiday clothes and accessories. And you’ll have a great time doing it in one convenient location. More than 200 companies will offer the latest fashions, jewelry, accessories, decor, food, beverages, and holiday gift wrap and gifts, all in one place. The Holiday Boutique takes place at the Overland Park Convention Center November 14-17. A portion of ticket sales from the Holiday Boutique benefits Marillac, the area’s leading provider of mental health services for children with emotional and behavioral needs. Marillac’s Enchanted Forest, which takes place concurrently at the Convention Center, will have decorated wreaths and trees that will be sold by silent auction. Bring the whole family to experience the Enchanted Forest (and bid on a tree or wreath); there is no admission fee to view the Forest. The Holiday Boutique is one-stop shopping that can take the stress out of the holidays and give you more time to enjoy the things you love about the season!

Enchanted Forest and Holiday Boutique Are a Winning Team! For the third year, Marillac will join forces with the Holiday Boutique November 14-17 at the Overland Park Convention Center. The Enchanted Forest provides a festive addition to this grand shopping experience with wreaths and trees decorated and/or donated by individuals, professionals, companies and civic groups across the area. The trees are silently auctioned during the Boutique, with all proceeds benefiting Marillac’s programs and services. Marillac has been a safe haven for children with emotional and behavioral needs for more than 115 years in the Kansas City area and is embedded in the hearts of residents. The organization’s staff is excited about changes that have taken place the past two years in regard to improved services and programs. Marillac and the University of Kansas School of Medicine (KUMC) have collaborated to create a Center of Excellence in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry within the current Marillac Overland Park campus. Today, KUMC’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences faculty work hand-in-hand with the Marillac hospital staff to ensure every child gets the highest quality behavioral health service available. This affiliation allows Marillac to have two clinical teams, providing expert psychiatric care seven days a week. These partnerships and the generous support from individuals in our community allow Marillac to continue exploring new specialty programs and research opportunities. The goal of Marillac is, and always has been, to alleviate suffering and improve the lives of children with mental illness and developmental disorders.

The Enchanted Forest thanks NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) for supplying doors for our beautiful wreaths at the Enchanted Forest!

Make It Your Own Mass production certainly has its benefits. Fashion, jewelry, personal accessories and home decor can be churned out at a rapid rate, ensuring the availability of trendy items for fashionistas everywhere. But along with that instant availability comes anonymity, while the majority of us have a basic desire to express ourselves and let others see who we are, as unique and special, with a very personal style. Individuality makes life interesting. One way to insert personal style in the home is to say it or spell it out –– literally, with words. Tosha Jackson with TYPOGRFX creates custom-designed art for the home that reflects its inhabitants. The customer supplies words and colors, and Tosha turns them into a piece of art she calls “Yours Truly!” A family name might be included as well as dates, places, phrases, descriptions, hobbies, pets names, and favorite movies, books or thoughts. Tell Tosha what you want, and she creates the artwork. The unique, one-of-a kind pieces are done in colors that complement the buyer’s decor. Van Liew’s Home & Garden sells an iron monogram that is individually handcrafted and suitable for both indoors and outdoors. This popular gift item personalizes the outside of a home. The monogram can be hung with a wreath hanger or ribbon for the holidays. Crooked Creek Ranch Designs creates custom-designed tiles personalized with names, dates, families or phrases that have meaning to a specific person or family. Amy Hunter with Love Letters also creates monograms that can be incorporated into decor as well as a line of jewelry that can be customized. The personalization of jewelry has become a cottage industry in its own right and has been around since the beginning of time. Earliest records of the wearing of charms is in regard to amulets used to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. Today, jewelry is all about being fully customizable. While a bracelet or necklace PHOTO COURTESY OF TYPOGRFX

can be purchased as a completed piece, there is a growing desire to acquire individual beads, charms, initials and repurposed items, and put them together in a manner that reflects the wearer’s personality, complexion and preferences. In response, many vendors carry the “pieces” necessary to make the perfect bracelet. This might include chains, ribbons or neck wires as a base, with a variety of beads and adornments. The beauty of these custom items is that the wearer can make additions or deletions simply and easily, as interests evolve. The mere availability of all these customizable items ensures that the consumer can put them together in a way that is truly unique, stylish and affords the individuality we crave! TYPOGRFX, Van Liew’s Home & Garden, Crooked Creek Ranch, Love Letters and many other jewelry purveyors will be exhibiting at the Holiday Boutique

Presented by the Kansas City Symphony Guild (an adaptation of the Homes of Note tour), this one-night event features a candlelight tour, cocktails and musical entertainment by members of the Kansas City Symphony.

This West Shore Estates home of John and Twyla Wilson in Riss Lake took three years to build, but the holiday collections on display have taken a lifetime to amass and were enlivened by the decorating expertise of Mary Carol Garrity and her staff at Nell Hill’s. As you enter through the double doors and pass through the 22-foot Corinthian columns, you are greeted by five of 20 Jane Howard Santas displayed throughout the home. Guests will certainly be captivated with the leadedglass windows and doors, freestanding curved staircase and twin fauxfinished domes located 24 feet above, as well as the 12-foot “Symphony Christmas Tree” decorated with 13 full-sized musical instruments and antique music stands. To keep cozy during the winter months, there are three fireplaces on the main level. The designers from Nell Hill’s incorporated music stands and antique sheet music on the mantel in the formal living room. In the hearth room, berries, greenery and ribbon provide Christmas cheer. The third fireplace in the master suite features a collection of nutcrackers as well as “memorables,” such as the tennis nutcracker purchased by the Wilsons’ daughter at the Graden Elementary Christmas store along with others given as gifts through the years. The knotty alder-paneled library is adorned with vintage Santas as well as mementos from the Wilsons’ travels to Africa, New Zealand and India. Here, they also display business awards, service recognitions and some photos from the day they hosted the President of the United States in their home. The formal dining room, with its red Venetian plaster walls, generously accommodates seating for 12. Again, the musical theme is featured in table decor, along with a five-branch silver candelabra and stacked antique china place settings. A custombuilt cabinet across from the table features a Jane Howard nativity, one of several unique nativities in the home. The kitchen and hearth room mix Christmas old and new. The upside-down Christmas tree is decorated with toys from the Wilsons’ past as well as ornaments and letters-to-Santa ribbon that are part of this year’s holiday collection at Nell Hill’s. The setting is complete with a life-size Jane Howard Santa seated next to a vintage mailbox. The breakfast room takes on a Gen Y look with holiday decor in green, pink, purple and teal. The pantry off the kitchen goes retro with 1970s ceramic Christmas trees and Fitz and Floyd collectibles. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served in the trophy room downstairs. The event is presented by the Kansas City Symphony Guild, the Northland auxiliary supporting the Symphony since 1971.
