Red exudes confidence, energy and strength, while pink represents a sense of calmness, romance and friendship. Red is the color of love and passion. According to Feng Shui, a red front door welcomes prosperity to residents. It’s also the signature color of Frank Lloyd Wright. Pink, on the other hand, is more feminine but just as energetic without being as aggressive. It offers a sense of happiness and the exhilarating feeling of being carefree.

“Full of passion and drama, red raises your blood pressure and demands your attention, making it a fabulous choice for those personalities who want some excitement or to live large and experience life to the fullest. However, red, the color associated with blood and fire, can still exude a sense of warmth and intimacy when introduced with warmer neutrals to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere you’ll never want to leave. But stir in a large amount of white to your red (muted pink), and suddenly the drama of red dissipates into a serene place of romance where calm rules and stress melts away.” Karen Mills, interior designer and radio host of “Living Large”

BRIDGING STYLES This contemporary kitchen in a Parkville Colonial, designed by Megan Lynch, AKBD, of Schloegel Design Remodel, benefits from a dramatic reinterpretation of space and style. From the beginning, her client said she wanted something bold, but when decision time came, she tried to take the neutral route with color. “I had to push her to take the leap, and when she saw it, she said it was unbelievable how much she loved it,” Lynch says.

THINK PINK After a remodel left this space without a purpose, the Fairway homeowners decided to build it out as a library, but not just any ordinary library. Clay Lyon, CR, of Lyon Construction + Design, lined three of the four walls with bookshelves and incorporated a fireplace and mantel, daybed and art wall. The lady of the home, who loves pink, selected three shades of the hue. That should get those neurons firing.

PERFECT POMEGRANATE Updated yet mindful of the period of the home, this Kansas City, Mo., guest bath looks crisp and clean in a black-and-white palette with a striking pop of red. Designer Megan Lynch, AKBD, of Schloegel Design Remodel, pulled the color from the bedding in the adjoining room. Best yet, in partnership with One Week Bath, the remodel was completed in only six days, with everything new but the tub. B E N JA M I N M O O R E A F F I N I T Y ( A F- 2 9 5 ) P O M E G R A N AT E

“Orange is the happiest color,” Frank Sinatra once said. And he would certainly know. Orange is a fun, trendy color that grabs attention wherever you use (or wear) it. It’s an enthusiastic and adventurous color that creates a sense of endurance, fascination and encouragement. It gets the creative juices flowing while stimulating mental activity, appetite and socialization. And, of course, it sparks controversy more than any other color.

ORANGE POP The young-at-heart owners of this Fairway residence have a great perspective on their home and its space, says designer Elizabeth Goltz, CKD, of Orion Design Inc. After a previous botched remodel, they got what they wanted in a classy blackand-white combo personalized with a chalkboard-faced sliding barn door and a happy burst of orange on a bookcase built into the back of the island. Committed to the color but in a small dose, it’s only for the eyes of those who dine at the breakfast table behind. Photo by Bob Greenspan

ETHNIC ATTITUDE Affectionately called “the jewel room,” this small sitting room spices up the entry of an Overland Park home, featuring Benjamin Moore’s Peachland with a copper metallic, custom, hand-painted stencil reminiscent of the East. Appointed with a luxurious daybed, leather club chair and ‘directional’ rug atop a tile floor, it’s an inspired space perfect for armchair traveling. “[The homeowner] wanted the room to be more dramatic,” says designer Rena Shanks of Great House LLC. Done.

COPPER CONNECTION Complemented by peaceful blue walls and accompanied by bomber jacket leather chairs, raw woods and polished pieces, this fireplace surround anchors a relaxed, natural family room. “The family was hesitant about using metallics,” notes Jill Tran, IDS, of Tran + Thomas Design Studio, “but it’s another case of something you’re leery of at first turning out to be your favorite feature.” She also designed the mantel — or lack thereof — to feature metal art pieces.

WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD Smoky, coppery finishes in this Overland Park dining room set the scene for a feast. Designer Adrienne Molstad at Twigs Interiors says the entire vibe is warm, with splashes of abstract art collected from the homeowner’s travels. From the aged, handmade Phillip Jeffries wallpaper to the LusterStone faux-finished ceiling, this room positively glows. Even the peacock green drapery panels feature metallic accents.

EASY AS PIE Not everyone can handle the tangy bite of Benjamin Moore’s Lemon Meringue, but designer Ann Egan, ASID, of Ann Egan Interior Design, had no qualms putting such a bold, saturated color on her living room walls. “I didn’t want a weak yellow, something that was too close to cream,” she notes. “The room is big enough to handle it.” Plus, it holds its own against Egan’s French antiques and makes a fabulous backdrop to Susan Tinker’s brightly

THE SANDS OF TIME While most homeowners in southern Overland Park seem perfectly content in beige spaces, Kathy Bryles’ clients love the ocean and wanted their home to feel like a retreat. The designer at Becky Berg Design chose Benjamin Moore’s Desert Tan that, technically by name, fits into that neutral category, but with lots of windows and colorful fabrics, it reads a happy yellow. “It’s a really comfortable room that’s family-friendly,” Bryles comments. “It’s a place where memories are made.”

MINTY FRESH A spring breeze swept through this Overland Park kitchen remodel designed by Kathleen Ramsey, Allied ASID, of Ramsey Interiors. Her client was not afraid to use color and especially loves cool colors. After finding the Hirsch glass tile for the backsplash, Ramsey focused in on green for the walls and matched it to Sherwin-Williams’ Easy Green. It’s toned down by blue drapes and painted cabinets, but the fresh, fun feel remains.

HOMEWORK H AV E N You can tell this room is an office, but look closer and you’ll see it’s for the younger members of the family. A bench sidles up next to the wall so kids can stand and look at the maps, and the table folds out for big group projects. Jill Tran, IDS, of Tran + Thomas Design Studio, treated the space to Artichoke by Sherwin-Williams to maintain a maturity in a room so close to the front entry and main living area. “It’s studyfriendly but not silly,” she says.

OLIVE JUICE Refined for a small space like a bath, Benjamin Moore’s Nantucket Gray makes a big impact. Designer Jan Burket selected this historical hue for her Mission Hills client. Documented in the 18th and 19th centuries but relevant for today’s homes, it complements the tumbled stone and hardwood floors. The cabinets are painted Deep Creek.

BLUE {

TIPS FOR USING BLUE Paint your ceiling a soft blue. Don’t be scared to paint the trim the same color as the walls. Imagine chocolate walls with a delft blue fireplace…yum!

}

With the color blue, it’s all about trust and loyalty, wisdom and confidence. Soothing to the mind and body, it provides a calming, tranquil feeling. It’s also associated with faith, understanding and productivity.

E F F E RV E S C E N T SKY When Ann Egan, ASID, of Ann Egan Interior Design, moved to a new home, she left all her old fabrics behind but took along her paint color, Benjamin Moore’s Saratoga Springs. The designer broke the rule of finding the fabric before the paint, “but I just loved that color,” she says. She indeed found fitting replacements of Fortuny linens that complete a classical, balanced and subdued sense of space.

PRAISE FOR PERIWINKLE It started with a shirt. Everyone in John Wolfe’s family liked it, so they took a swatch into the store and made a custom color for their mudroom. “It worked well with the other colors in the house,” says the homeowner and co-owner of Scovell-Wolfe & Associates. Specks of the color also can be found in the granite countertop. The shirt is long gone, but the color happily greets the family every time they come in from the garage. 58 • KCHANDG.COM

TURQUOISE FOR A TOT Transitioning from a nursery to a child’s room is easy to do with paint (although it may be emotionally tough for a parent). A neutral gray befitting a baby made way for a threeyear-old’s love of the ocean. Jill Tran, IDS, of Tran + Thomas Design Studio, selected SherwinWilliams’ Composed, which, she admits, is bright, but it’s a background only. Tran added wainscot with a wide ledge for displaying and playing with toys and a cushy rug that creates a sense of place to play.

PURPLE {

TIPS FOR USING PURPLE Look to fashion designers and how they pair outfits and fabrics. Try it with reds, grays and whites. Start in small doses __ a headboard, coffee table or the inside of a china cabinet.

Magic and mystery, power and nobility, the color purple represents the crowned heads in all of us. A color for the creative, it’s original, eccentric and ambitious. These days it’s also a popular color in garden design.

CALM AND COOL A purple couch? “Why not?” asks designer Jill Tran, IDS, of Tran + Thomas Design Studio. “It’s a cool purple, not girly or royal. It’s calm, chill, masculine even,” she describes. It finds the middle ground between the cool gray walls and deep purple curtains, and it’s balanced by wood tones in the trim and furnishings. And just like paint, if you decide you hate the color later, “you can always reupholster,” Tran says.
