ow do you choose an architect or interior designer? When you think about it, you’re asking this person to take on a very personal task. You’re asking him or her to create your home, that one place that reflects you—who you are, what you love, the way you choose to spend your time. It’s funny that we so often hire someone else to take on such a personal endeavor. Maybe that’s why it’s so magical when the person we choose creates a space that is so “us” in every way. So how do you find that person? Sure, you can create a list of questions a mile long—and get great answers to them all— and gather piles of references and recommendations, but when it comes down to it, isn’t it really a gut feeling? I’ve looked at thousands of homes over the years, and while I’ve seen many designs I’ve loved, there are a special few that stand out in my mind; places where I can imagine living every day. It wasn’t just the setting or the finishes or furnishings that appealed to me. It was something less tangible. I felt that if I were to meet the architect or designer who created the space, he or she would really “get” me—and my idea of home. It seems that I’m not alone. For the past five years, we’ve published an annual list of Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers, and every year we hear from many of you who visit the website of each and every firm on that list. You pore over thousands of photos until you find that architect or interior designer whose work speaks to you. And that’s the person you hire. In this issue, we’re proud to present the fifth edition of Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers, our exclusive guide to the design pros we’ve featured in the pages of Mountain Living over the years—as well as those whose work we know and admire. But this issue is about more than a list. It’s about celebrating all of the design professionals who have taken the time to really understand us; to get at what makes us tick, give it form and bring it to life. It’s magic, indeed.

Before you come visit, Apex Mountain Homes wishes to advise you that this home is “Rated G.” Here, “G” stands for Green Built: Sustainable for All Residents! The building features and techniques implemented here by Apex Mountain Homes are a synergistic combination of low-tech, old-fashioned common sense and cutting-edge green technologies designed to reduce the home’s carbon footprint. The home functions as a complete system, encompassing everything from the food grown on site to the energy conserved and the message of resource stewardship it sends to future generations. Features include an attached Mediterraneanclimate greenhouse and earth-sheltered garage roof garden for growing food. An 8.1-kW solar system generates electricity for the home and the owners’ 100-percent electric car. Energy usage was further reduced by installing hanging racks in the laundry room instead of a clothes dryer. DESCRIPTION While searching for a site on which to build their mountain home, Kansas City residents Lynn and Doug found this wooded lot close to the town of Breckenridge. And after meeting the staff at Mountain Log Homes of Colorado, they knew they had found the right team to make their dream home a reality. The couple fell in love with Pioneer Log Homes of British Columbia’s large, handcrafted Western red cedar logs and decided to incorporate them into their home’s design. Breathe in and look up as you tour this home to appreciate the aroma and beauty of these extraordinary logs. Doug also wanted central gathering spaces for family reunions with the couple’s three grown children, outdoor living space where they could enjoy their Ten Mile Range views, and lots of room for the family to cook and enjoy meals together. Kitchenscapes helped the couple design a gourmet kitchen with a large central island. Light and fresh air were also priorities for the homeowners. They got both with a large wall of low-E windows in the great room, as well as operable windows thoughtfully positioned throughout the home to ensure good airflow. Strategically placed task and mood lighting highlight the unique log features, while four fireplaces—including a wood burner for log-cabin authenticity—provide warmth during the cold winters. Each of this home’s bedroom suites has a unique theme. The bunkroom, which sleeps six, features genuine multicolored Pendleton blankets and animalthemed lighting. The natural stone on the fireplaces

and bathroom tile contribute to the home’s sophisticated lodge feel. The game room is yet another great gathering space and features a wet bar, log pool table, and access to a covered paver patio complete with a hot tub and gas ﬁrepit. The entry foyer was designed to highlight “Peace Offering,” a bronze sculpture created by the late artist Walt Horton. The homeowners have given their own special names to the whimsical animals found throughout their home, including “Benjamin Beaver,” who was hand-carved into a log tail on the deck. Says homeowner Lynn: “My dream is that everyone who visits may ﬁnd a wonderful peace and feeling of warmth and love surrounding them.”

Beal in the style and tradition of Apex Mountain Homes. The architect and builder were tasked with constructing a budgetconscious, energy efﬁcient home that would be affordable for both the short and long term, and here they accomplished just that. For this project, the guiding principle was practicality—while maintaining beauty and the highest quality. Together, Apex Mountain Homes and the homeowners adopted a concept of “Real Green.” This meant staying away from the latest “green” gimmicks and selecting products and processes that offer real value. First, Apex used a framing method called Keymark, a groundbreaking way to transform the architect’s plan into a 3D framing plan. Every framing element was detailed and sent to a German Hundegger saw, measured exactly, then cut and marked for immediate assembly by the onsite framing crew. This process not only reduced waste but also improved the speed and quality of the construction. Cabinetry and interior trim were created by Cutting Edge Woodworking, an award-winning Leadville-based ﬁrm that employs the latest computer and tooling techniques. The elegant handcrafted

cabinet fronts were installed at the end of the project to preserve their perfection. The enviable living room ceiling features salvaged beetle-kill pine from Vintage Woods. An all-natural process was used to give the wood an instant patina. The “Real Green” efforts have paid off, as this home has scored a remarkable 135 points under the Summit Sustainable Building Code, and has also qualiﬁed for a refund of the plan-review fee by the town of Frisco. The homeowners were very pleased about their collaboration with Apex Mountain Homes and David A. Beal and Associates. “Not only did we get more than we expected,” they say, “but it was great fun.”

In Perfect Harmony OPPOSITES ATTRACT—RUSTIC AND REFINED, MASCULINE AND FEMININE—IN A LARGER-THAN-LIFE HOME ON THE SHORES OF MONTANA’S WHITEFISH LAKE

To keep the focus on the spectacular views of Whitefish Lake, interior designer Hunter Dominick kept things simple in this outdoor dining area. OPPOSITE: A 28-foot-tall fireplace is the undisputed star of the great room. “You have to stand in front of it to really get a sense of the scale,” says residential designer Lyndon Steinmetz. “The firebox alone is 5½ feet tall; a person could walk right into it.” Because some of the stones used weigh more than two tons, they had to be lowered into place by a crane.

The home is called “Tetelestai,” and appropriately so. Of Greek origin, the word translates to “it is finished,” and according to the owner of this Montana residence, completing the 10,000square-foot home was no small feat. But thanks to the superb synergy among its design team, the lakeside retreat is finished—and as spectacular as its mountain backdrop. Key to the success of this project was the owners’ clear vision. After narrowing their list of potential architects to two firms, they asked the finalists to draft proposals. In the end, Lyndon Steinmetz of Kalispell, Montana-based Lyndon L. Steinmetz Design was the winner of the mini design competition—in part, says his client, because “he could complete our sentences. When taking on a project of this scope, it’s important that you’re communicating; that you have the same ideas.” Set on the shores of Whitefish Lake, the homesite was “very desirable, but tight,” says Steinmetz. “It’s only about 100 feet wide, hemmed in on the north by mountains and by an existing house and pond on the sides.” Steinmetz also had to contend with a vertical constraint, as local building codes specify a 35-foot vertical limit. “[The client] was looking for something >>

“Our goal was to do something a little different and unexpected.” — Hunter Dominick partially timber framed,” says Steinmetz. “He wanted to use timbers and native materials while varying the roof pitches, much like you see in old mining buildings around here.” To satisfy the homeowners’ desire for a home that appeared old beyond its years, Steinmetz selected stone of varying shapes and sizes to clad the walls. Then the search for reclaimed timbers began. But because of the home’s large scale, the right sizes just weren’t to be found. So Steinmetz turned to timber framer Sandy Koness of Centennial Timber Frames, who set about creating customized timbers for the project. Starting with new Douglas fir logs, she roughed up the edges, made marks with braces and bits, and even added and removed bolts and washers. To add an instant patina, she applied ferrous sulfate, which reacted with the wood to give the timbers a weathered gray tone. When interior designer Hunter Dominick joined the collaboration, she worked with the homeowners to create refreshingly unexpected interiors that juxtapose rustic with refined, masculine with feminine. In fact, what started as a simple search for fabrics in Dominick’s Whitefish showroom evolved into the designer’s involvement in every aspect of the project. “[The homeowner] brought in photos of her former home in California so I could get a sense of their style and, like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words,” says Dominick. Because the owners were virtually starting from scratch, Dominick had the luxury of working with a clean slate. Still, there were some definite must-haves. For one, the owners wanted to infuse the rustic home with some formality. >> 129

The grandeur of stonework, timber framing and exceptional lighting is found both indoors and out, evidenced in this fireside seating area. OPPOSITE: Characterized by an enormous amount of rock—more than 1,100 tons—and large-scale timbers, this residence seems to organically grow out of the landscape. To add to the effect, the structure’s stone face was slightly tapered. “The stone walls slope 1 degree out from the building from the top to the bottom,” explains Steinmetz. “The stone needed to be at least 4 inches thick at the very top of the walls, so as we sloped down, we increased the thickness to almost 16 inches wide at the ground. The result is a massively thick wall around the first floor doors and living room and great room windows. I think this really added to the home’s overall appeal.”

That request is fulfilled beautifully in the great room, where a luxe leather sofa and gold-leafed side table face a towering stone fireplace flanked by oversized hickory chairs. In the dining room, chairs upholstered with a lush cinnamon-hued velvet seem perfectly at home next to a rustic window wall and rough-hewn ceiling beams. The home’s predominantly gold-and-copper color palette, inspired by Italy’s sun-drenched landscapes, infuses each space with warmth, even in the cold of winter. To add visual interest, Dominick chose a layering of textures: from sparkling glass tile to embroidered silk fabric, smooth granite countertops to grasscloth-covered walls, there’s a surprise for the eye at every turn. But surprises are what this home is all about. Straightforward architecture is paired with intricately detailed interiors. Masculine elements stand comfortably next to pieces with feminine flair. It’s a rustic-meets-refined point of view that, instead of coming off as contradictory, creates a home balanced in perfect harmony. ●

Factor IN A WYOMING TOWN WHERE TRADITION REIGNS, A MODERN DWELLING DRAWS ATTENTION

In the rolling hills of Casper, Wyoming,

where wildlife sightings are commonplace and nature buffs are drawn to the raw beauty of the landscape, an architectural anomaly draws attention. Home to a local physician and his family, the decidedly modern residence makes a bold statement in a town where the predilection is toward traditional designs in neat, predictable neighborhoods. “When we decided to build a new home on the outskirts of town, we were open to the architectural possibilities that varied from our traditional roots,” says homeowner Phil Krmpotich. “We wanted to do something a little bit different. When we discovered the Midcentury-Modern style, we liked how it worked with the mountain landscape.” The design’s original two-story façade was quickly edited to a single story to contend with the harsh Wyoming climate. Bitter temperatures, unrelenting snowfalls and a biting wind that can gust in excess of 60 miles per hour all combined to create a unique design challenge. >>

A contemporary work of art, the kitchen features a stainless-steel countertop and cherry cabinets that expertly hide appliances and complement the home’s design. OPPOSITE: At the central point where the structure’s two wings meet, the architects designed a playful central node with three “spots” of light. Taking inspiration from the architectural detail, interior designer Nina Seirafi created an impromptu gallery, placing three solid petrified wood spheres in the middle of the walking space.

Considering these formidable forces of nature, Abramson Teiger Architects of Culver City, California, created a design plan that worked in concert with the surroundings and addressed the Krmpotichs’ desire for a decidedly different design. In response to the site’s challenges, the architects designed a low-slung structure anchored in concrete, steel and wood that clings to the base of a hillside. Forming a contemporary X shape, the home has gracefully elongated wings that stretch into the countryside. “The design plan we created translated into a beautiful composition,” says Douglas Teiger, AIA, managing principal of the firm. “The unconventional shape of the house allowed for different views from every room while also creating a very functional living space with private and public wings that are connected by a family playroom at the junction.” The home’s unique footprint not only creates an aesthetically pleasing design but also serves as a calculated answer to nature’s wrath. As the gusting wind crests the hill behind the home, it plummets down and across the rooftop. The arc-like, aerodynamic shape of the roof channels the wind, shielding the structure from the forceful gales. On the home’s exterior, concrete, steel, wood and glass add texture, accenting the structure’s sloping wings. Thick concrete walls extend up from the ground to a 10-foot-high baseline. Above this visual break are horizontal bands of redwood that add warmth and a Western quality to the modern home— as well as a striking contrast to the cool, industrial concrete. Walls of windows further the home’s connection with its surroundings. “Most of the homes we design in Southern California have a strong indoor/outdoor interaction,” says Trevor Abramson, FAIA, design principal of the firm. “We wanted to bring that California feeling to this home by highlighting its physical connection to the land.” Because the harsh climate prohibits large windows that open to let the breezes in, the architects opted for expansive inoperable windows designed to withstand strong wind gusts while still capturing “the beautiful quality of light and picturesque view,” says Abramson. With its strong connection to the land and thoughtful detail, the home embraces the fundamentals of understated modern elegance. Inside, handpicked furnishings and artistic embellishments are the perfect complement to the home’s strong, architectural lines. Bold pops of color add interest and a touch of warmth that channels the family’s traditional roots but stays true to the feel of a modern mountain dwelling. A topic of conversation in Casper from the start, this home seems to be changing some preconceived notions about modern design. “In the beginning, the challenge was building a contemporary house in a town where all of the craftsmen were skilled in traditional design,” Teiger explains. “But, as the project progressed, these craftsmen really put their hearts and souls into it, creating a home that transcends the perception of the unconventional modern home, and rooting it in the traditional Wyoming landscape.” ● 136

“When we first met, [homeowner Jamie Krmpotich] had a clear plan for the design,” Seirafi explains. “She wanted to keep the modern language of the house while incorporating the functionality of a traditional home. Not willing to compromise on comfort and luxury, we embraced her vision and added character through an eclectic mix of pieces that evoke different vibes in different rooms.”

MODERN BY DESIGN When it comes to accessorizing modern spaces, many homeowners struggle to achieve a clean, modern look that still feels livable and warm, often going to extremes with a bland color scheme and severe furnishings that make a space uninviting and austere. Interior designer Nina Seirafi offers a few words of advice for those looking to strike the balance between comfort and modern style:

CREATE A DESIGN PLAN “Before you begin the design process, consider how you are going to use the space and how your family functions in that space.” A room that functions well is naturally comfortable.

KNOW YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES “With a firm plan in hand, begin picking items based on the character of each family member. Be careful to only use those materials and colors that you respond to.”

UNDERSTAND YOUR ENVIRONMENT “The colors of nature, as well as the function of a room, often precipitate the color palette. In a home with expansive openings, it’s especially important to select a palette that reflects nature to alleviate tension between indoors and out. In an arid landscape, reflective materials are a necessity; they help create a pleasing flow inside the space. The materials you choose should also respond to your surroundings. In the Krmpotichs’ home, we shied away from coarse materials, like wool, because we wanted to soften the contours of the interior in contrast to the harsh environment.” GO ORGANIC “To suggest movement, which is especially important in a dry mountain landscape where things tend to be static, use contrasting proportions of the same shape.”

FINISH WITH ART AND ACCESSORIES “Adding a variety of artistic embellishments brings the room to the next level. A space that is only accented by modern pieces often loses its appeal, whereas a space with both contemporary and vintage elements creates excitement and a unique complementary quality.”

In the serene master bedroom, a solid satinwood bed, decidedly understated and modern, complements the vintage furnishings. Luxe textures and silver hues—accented with pops of purple—give the room a sensual feel. PIECES OF HISTORY

ARCHITECT IRA MARTIN HAS AN EYE FOR MATERIALS. Not the latest, sleekest fabrications, but old reclaimed materials that are full of history and character. Martin and his team at the Texas-based design-build firm Tony Martin Inc.—started by Ira’s father, Tony—comb the country in search of those perfectly imperfect buildings that have been worn, grayed and weathered over time. Then they carefully dismantle the old and reincarnate the bones into something beautiful and new. One of these transformations took place in the hills near St. Helena, California, where Martin recently created an array of dwellings. Comprised of a 2,000-square-foot main house, a detached study and three 1,100-square-foot guesthouses, the family compound was pieced together using reclaimed materials sourced from all over the country. The flooring was found in a 1950s sewing factory. The hand-hewn beams come from the Ohio River Valley and date back to the mid-1800s. And the stone Martin discovered in an old Pony Express outpost in Indian Gap, Texas—a place so small, it’s really nothing more than a few buildings. “It’s just a sign, not even a town,” Martin says. >>

In the great room of the main house, the kitchen, dining and surrounding living areas—all crafted from materials reclaimed from dismantled old buildings—flow together in a smart floorplan. Architect Ira Martin describes it as “individual spaces that can feel open but intimate.” Oversized warehousestyle shelves in the dining area help define the space while maintaining that open feel, and a custom light fixture and vent hood, both designed by Martin, add a distinctive touch.

The main house (on the far side of the pool), one of the guesthouses (to the right) and the pool itself all share a similar footprint, which Martin describes as “simple, straightforward and not too fancy.” Other design elements, including the chimneys and door openings, were also modeled after this shape. OPPOSITE: A large steel-clad fireplace, which takes center stage in the entry to the main house, was inspired by a bit of European history: “If you’d walk into a home in old Italy, you’d see the grandmother coming and going all day, stoking the fire to keep the house warm,” Martin says. “It really was the centerpiece.”

As Martin passed through the town one day, a simple structure caught his eye. Its hand-sawn stone exterior fit together so well that it appeared to be one smooth surface. “It had developed what I call a French palette—that bluish, gray-green patina,” he says. “You know, you can’t buy that.” That striking stone, which now covers the main house’s façade, would provide the inspiration for the dwelling’s entire materials palette—the grayish floors left unsanded, the off-white plaster walls. To create an interior scheme that would complement these architectural materials, Martin teamed up with homeowner Shea Kos, who had a clear vision for the space. Kos hoped to achieve a sophisticated industrial look; a blend of delicate lines and rugged materials. The industrial component is evident in the rustic unfinished stone and beams on display in the main residence’s great room, and in the exposed concrete walls in the master suites’ spa-like bathrooms. You can see it in the warehouse-style shelving in the great room—oversized to match the materials’ scale—and in the entry’s steel-clad fireplace. >>

A collection of furnishings, amassed by Kos over the course of several years—and several trips to Europe—mix with some surprisingly delicate touches to add an air of sophistication to the otherwise rugged, masculine space. Thinly framed steel windows and doors add elegance, and exposed plumbing in the bathrooms balances the concrete walls. In the great room, a custom light fixture and dramatic vent hood, both designed by Martin, complete the space. Martin’s approach to reclaiming the past may not be the fastest, most efficient method. In fact, the team only works on two or three projects at a time. But it’s all by design. They understand that there’s a beautiful balance and proportion to be found in history—and that achieving it often requires a look back before moving forward. “Old buildings are really proportionate,” explains Martin. “They have that old farmhouse look because they were simple to build.” And because construction was so straightforward, he says, “you could focus on the materials.” Martin and his team aim to work with homeowners who are as passionate about the process as they are, and who they hope will keep the structures in the family for posterity’s sake. “We create these legacy estates for people so they can enjoy them with their families,” he says, “then hand them down like a piece of furniture or an antique.” ●
