Welcome fromSLHL

There’s no place like

home

Recently, I received a press release from Antiques Roadshow, by way of their appraiser Phil Weiss, who disclosed five of the highest valued Academy Award-winning collectibles in the past ten years. The first item on the list was “Dorothy’s” iconic pair of ruby slippers, which sold at auction for $666,000. Just as you might expect, the indelible image of Dorothy clicking her heels together, reciting the ever-so-meaningful words, “There’s no place like home,” came to mind with great clarity. It’s easy to imagine that most of us, upon hearing about the famous, magical ruby red slippers, would immediately recall the same image – one that is ingrained in our memories with great fondness and endearing sentiment. It’s a bit of “history” with a universal message. For Tom and Ruth Brouster of St. Louis, the treasured words from The Wizard of Oz could easily describe their affection for their history-inspired home, featured in this issue (pages 3951). Fondly referred to by the couple as a “family home,” the magnificent, Georgian-style residence takes its inspiration from the Westbury House at Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island. The story of the Brouster home’s architecturally rich, traditional roots transports us (happily, not by tornado) back to an era marked by a sense of tradition and classic, gracious living. Images come to mind of formal balls, garden parties and generous hospitality. The home’s traditional Georgian architecture (the name given to the set of architectural styles current between 1720 and 1840) adheres to a focus on proportion, balance and symmetry. Its elegantly comfortable décor and superbly landscaped setting honors its distinguished roots. Our June/July issue reveals a lily-white urban courtyard garden and a suburban water garden built with family in mind. Inspiration overflows on every page. Let it be the springboard for your own outdoor space, and be sure to visit our Outdoor Living section (pages 62 and 64) for experts who can achieve your vision with quality design service. As always, I’d love to hear about the design projects that have transformed your home and lifestyle. Our October issue will feature STL area home and design professionals’ favorite spaces in their own homes. It will be exciting to see the best of the best! COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

POOL PHOTO COURTESY OF SCHILLI PLASTERING

Plaster Master

Plastering pro Dave Schilli embraces a lost art and brings it to life today. BY JUDY UELK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

The art of plastering may indeed be somewhat lost in today’s modern world of construction. Aside from historic homes, it’s hard to find the stunning ornamental plasterworks that graced the homes of yesteryear, and walls are more likely to be drywall than plaster. But plastering as an art form hasn’t disappeared completely, and the masters of this art are successfully bringing its beauty and function into the 21st century – with options that extend beyond the home’s interior walls. Combining true artistry with impeccable craftsmanship is what defines a true master of plaster. And it is what defines Dave Schilli. Owner and president of Schilli Plastering Co., Dave continues the legacy left to him by his father, Elmer. With his son Ryan, Dave oversees the work of more than 20 veteran employees, each with 10 to 12 years of experience. “It’s a team concept at Schilli,” says Dave. “We all pitch in to get the job done. In fact, up until last year, Ryan was still spending a lot of his time plastering pools.” “My father started Schilli in 1950,” says Dave. “Back then, he did nothing but residential plastering, including ornamental, interior home, and exterior stucco plastering. Now of course, pools are also the benefactors of the craft. Schilli is the only Pebble Technology, Inc. licensed applicator in the Midwest. In addition to Pebble

16

www.stlouishomesmag.com

Tec®, Schilli also offers Pebble Sheen® and Pebble Fina®, as well as traditional Marcite plaster, Colorquartz Crystals, Beadcrete® and Diamond Brite™ finish. ArcusStone®, a product that closely resembles actual stone, is gaining popularity for interior and exterior residential and commercial applications,” says Dave. ArcusStone® weighs less than its genuine counterpart and can be far more cost-effective than the “real thing.” As a three-generation family business, Schilli has the unique opportunity to maintain a constant flow of development from year to year and generation to generation. “Passing on skills, while gaining new ones, is priceless,” says Dave. “It’s what can make professionals stand out in their field.” And Schilli certainly stands out. From something as small as a crack repair to an interior plaster veneer, an exterior Stucco application, or a new or refurbished swimming pool, Schilli has the knowledge and experience to get the job done right. And even though most ornamental plastering work doesn’t exist anymore, Schilli still has professionals trained in this “lost” art at his company. They, in turn, will pass their knowledge to the younger guys. “We’ll never lose sight of this beautiful art form,” says Dave. www.schilliplasteringco.com

Pool Perfection

Jim Bastian, pool designer and president of Westport Pools, is committed to design that complements each client’s lifestyle. EDITED BY VICKI PICKLE

PORTRAIT BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

DESIGNER SKETCH: Hometown: Ferguson, Missouri Years in the industry/at Westport Pools: 48 years/43 years Thoughts on pool design: The design of a pool should be approached as the focal point of the entire outdoor living and entertainment space. My goal at Westport Pools: To create a unique installation for each of our clients. COURTESY OF WESTPORT POOLS

What is the first step for homeowners who desire a pool to complete their outdoor living space? The first step is for the family to list and prioritize the functions they want the pool to serve. When my wife and I designed our pool, our list of priorities resulted in a small stone pool several feet from our front door. Water cascades from the pool and runs through a water garden filled with lilies and goldfish. Then the water goes over a waterfall into the main lagoon, which includes a shallow entry section for our dogs. At the opposite end of the lagoon is a negative edge where water drops into a rock stream that runs into a final small stone pool. What are the options when it comes to pool shapes and styles? The possibilities are endless. Anything from a formal Roman style with brick or stone decking to a natural blue lagoon, surrounded by natural stone, boulder walls, plantings and a modified actual deck area, can be designed to capture a family’s imagination. Recent technological advances in the pool industry bring new options in the areas of energy conservation (variable speed pumps and ultra-high-efficiency heaters), saltwater chlorine generators, automatic control systems and extremely attractive and durable finishes for the pool and deck.

18

www.stlouishomesmag.com

www.westportpools.com

How can extended features complement any setting? Over half of our projects include a spa, and many are elevated, with waterfalls that trickle or plunge into the pool. These are actually two separate bodies of water maintained at significantly different temperatures. Streams, waterfalls, grottos concealed behind waterfalls, swim-up bars, wet walls, firepits, diving rocks, lap lanes, beaches and current channels are all features that we have included in designs to transform a family’s dreams into reality. What timeline can be expected for completion of an outdoor pool? Westport divides each project into four phases: design, permitting, construction and commissioning, which includes hands-on training for our homeowners. The size and complexity of the project and permitting authority significantly impact the timeline. Generally, once permits are obtained, residential pools are completed in four to six weeks. We had one extensive project with a duration of nine months from initial contact to commissioning; this project was the Aquatech Society’s 2009 Gold Medal winner.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Homeowners who invest in James Hardie products do more than enhance their home’s efficiency and aesthetic – they increase its value. As an industry leader, James Hardie offers innovative fiber cement siding products that provide strength, beauty, durability and more to millions of homes nationwide. Several types of James Hardie siding are available in a variety of styles, such as HardiePlank® lap siding, the most popular brand of siding in America. In addition to being low-maintenance yet durable and beautiful yet sustainable, James Hardie siding has been specially engineered to withstand specific climates. This new technology, known as the HardieZone™ System, was developed with ten distinct climate zones in mind, so homeowners can rest assured that their siding is ideally suited for the local climate. When areaspecific factors, including temperature variation and humidity, are taken into consideration, the result is a siding that performs

optimally at all times – regardless of the natural elements. Aside from withstanding summer heat and winter snow, James Hardie siding is designed to resist hail damage and winds up to 150 miles per hour, as it is five times thicker than vinyl siding. James Hardie products are innately green, as well, because they are extremely long-lasting. The ColorPlus manufacturing process, which bakes on paint in the factory, eliminates VOCs during exterior painting, and a 15-year finish warranty reduces the need to paint. In addition, the company’s ten manufacturing facilities help to support regional economies while reducing the harmful environmental impact that is caused by the transportation of materials. And, most James Hardie raw materials are low in toxicity, while some are even recycled. Eco-friendly factors such as these allow James Hardie products to contribute to a home’s U.S. Green Building Council LEED® certification. James Hardie fiber cement siding allows homeowners to protect their greatest investments – their homes.

With the summer sun casting a golden glow over their outdoor paradise, veteran party-givers Tracy and Greg dove into summertime entertaining with style. This busy Frontenac couple, parents of Madison, Blake and Brooke, enjoy hosting any kind of soirée, but especially love to welcome their guests poolside. So, with June upon them, the couple called upon historic Lafayette Square’s SqWires Restaurant to create a fresh, summer-inspired menu. “I definitely recommend using a caterer, like SqWires,” says Tracy. “For me, a party is all about the details, and having someone you can count on to make the food fantastic and memorable is so important. It frees me up to plan all the little things that add so much to a party’s ambience.” Bethany Budde, owner and executive chef at SqWires, was certainly up for the challenge, providing Tracy and Greg with party fare extraordinaire. “We love doing events at people’s homes,” says Bethany. “Finger foods are especially good for pool parties. It’s much easier to mingle when you can grab a bite and continue to socialize. I suggest having a large variety of different items, say eight or nine dishes, that all work well together and give guests a lot of choices.” Using only the freshest ingredients from local farmers, SqWires’ custom-designed, mouthwatering alfresco menu included SqWires’ signature drink, the Urbantini. Landscape designer Terry Fontana and interior designer Marci Marsh were pivotal in creating the tablescape that

captured the sophisticated essence of this summertime gathering. “Terry and Marci both agreed that the décor should be simple, allowing the food to take center stage,” says Tracy. “Terry saw no need for large floral arrangements and felt that more natural elements, like the moss topiaries, would be just the right touch,” she adds. Tracy and Greg couldn’t have been happier. “Both Marci and Terry have great vision,” say the couple. “They think outside the box and always get it right. We count on their expertise for every party we host.” The party extended to the couple’s fabulous pool house, decorated with mementos from summers at the beach. And with the sparkling blue waters of their custom pool as the backdrop, the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Dominic Tricamo of American Holidays Pool & Spa created the swimming pool of their dreams, complete with a cascading waterfall and built-in spa. “It’s very special,” say Tracy and Greg. “Even our guests have said that they feel like they’re on vacation when they’re here.”

Masterful Presentation Notably poised and designed for sharing, the home of Tom and Ruth Brouster proclaims its presence with a declaration of classic elegance. BY VICKI PICKLE & GARDEN WRITER LUCYANN BOSTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB GRIMM

“Next to excellence, comes the appreciation of it.” (William Makepeace Thackeray, 19th-century English novelist). Although written in another time and place, this sentiment is echoed in the magnificent Ladue home of Tom and Ruth Brouster and the couple’s admiration for its welcoming grace. Reflecting their affinity for Old English countryside homes, the newly completed residence embraces a refined sensibility found in discerning homes with appreciable history. A repertoire of the couple’s restorations includes a home in Kirkwood, the historic Harriet Bakewell Portland Place residence and an 85-year old, historic house in Webster Groves, where the Brousters lived for 16 years. Embarking on another ambitious venture, the couple decided to build a new home with the feel of a home with history. The 8-year

process originally began with plans to build a home in Huntleigh, working with architect Patrick Nolan of PNM Ltd. Architects, before the couple found the perfect site – a splendid, tree-lined 4.8-acre setting in nearby Ladue. With a penchant for perfection, the Brousters continued to work with Nolan to design a residence with dignified spaces and unequivocal architectural style. The home’s multi-level expanse is punctuated with generously sized rooms that flow one to another and lead outdoors to brilliantly planned spaces that beckon year-round use. Tom, a St. Louis banking entrepreneur, and Ruth, a busy mother and volunteer, set their hearts on a spacious, yet welcoming, family-focused home with inviting warmth. Researching every aspect of the enormous undertaking and working in tandem with the team, the hands-on couple was instrumental in all of the interior and exterior design decisions, and they could not be more proud of the fabulous outcome. The primary body of the home is symmetrically arranged in a traditional “center hall” manner with three basic volumes on each floor. The main level features a central entry foyer, grand staircase and living

Opening pages: A spectacular gated entry leads to the Brousters’ Ladue home, which is inspired by the historic Westbury House. The primary composition of the residence is a symmetrical arrangement in a traditional “center hall” manner with three basic volumes on each floor, starting on the main level with a centered entry foyer, grand stair and living room, with formal dining and front parlor spaces adjacent to either side. The north wing includes the kitchen, butler’s pantry and breakfast room, with the billiard room and conservatory in the home’s south wing. Left: With compelling beauty, the stately dining room is punctuated by the sparkle of an exquisite chandelier, fine architectural detailing and 18th-century-inspired, hand-painted wallpaper that wraps the room in luxury. Fresh floral arrangements by Walter Knoll Florist complement the décor on the main level. Above: Natural light fills the formal and graciously cordial living room through impeccably styled draperies. Carter Noel designed the living room using an elegant palette of soft greens, pinks and yellows.

room, with formal dining and parlor spaces adjacent to either side. The north wing includes a carriage house, gated auto court and garage. A family entry area is in close proximity to the kitchen, breakfast room and sunroom, with a billiard room and conservatory to the south. A hearth room, powder room and library are located between the north and south wings. The south wing is an intentional style departure, with Tudor Revival/Gothic features and a Victorian English conservatory, which achieves textural variety and conveys the impression that this was at some point an “addition” to the original home. Its design concept is intended to belie the “newness” of the home and reinforce the perception of an established estate. The second floor houses all of the bedrooms, with the master suite occupying the entire south third. The high-tech lower level is dedicated to entertainment and family-oriented spaces, such as a game room and theater, which can accommodate large gatherings. A spacious, state-of-the-art fitness room is a precisely planned space in the lower level, as well. In whole, the setting provides a backdrop for “an album of wonderful memories” with the couple’s daughter, grown children, seven grandchildren, and community of friends.

“We like to think of our home as a gathering place for our families a place to create memories.”

- Ruth Brouster

“We feel we’ve been very blessed, and we try to give back to the community through various organizations that are dear to our hearts,” say the couple. The Brousters’ goal – to create a new, generously capacious home with a turn-of-the-century aesthetic – was achieved with pinpoint attention to detail. They worked closely with Patrick Nolan, builder Jim Minton and interior designer Carter Noel throughout the long-term process. “Just the way older homes are built appeals to our taste,” remark Tom and Ruth. “We spent a lot of time looking at older homes to pick up ideas about traditional design,” Tom explains. Desiring the authenticity of a period home with a strong English influence, Tom was inspired by the historic Westbury House on Long Island, a Georgian

Revival-style mansion and a superb example of an English country manor home. Surrounded by one of the finest English gardens in the U.S., the Charles II-style mansion was designed in the early 1900s by English architect George A. Crawley, in conjunction with American architect Grosvenor Atterbury. The landmark estate embodies the style and image Tom wanted, and it became the inspiration – the starting point – for the basic composition and many of the period-appropriate details for the Brousters’ new home. Builder Jim Minton explains, “Selecting materials that were consistent with the Westbury House and its architectural style – such as the limestone carvings that are part of Westbury and were masterfully replicated by Leonard Masonry – provided authenticity to the overall appearance and feel of the Brousters’ home.” The exterior, especially the west and east façades, include many ornamental features reinterpreted from Westbury, with design elements as rich and diverse as those from the Charles II, Beaux Arts and Adam style. According to Nolan, “The home was designed to have a firm stance and a grand presence – but most importantly, to display an attentive respect to detail.” Commanding rooms were designed as a consistent reflection of the form and composition principles of the home, primarily symmetry and order, but with features that uniquely characterize each space. “From a design standpoint,” says Nolan, “the large scale of the home reinforced the need for ‘depth’ in the details – mere surface appliqué would not be successful.” Working closely with Tom, the design team wanted the home to showcase a rich variety of well-executed details that, when woven together, express a high level of refinement. Nolan continues, “We projected the keystones, quoins, and carved limestone details to create shadow lines and

enhance the three-dimensional qualities of the house.” French doors open to levels of outdoor patios and terraces, extending the home’s entertaining venues. Interior designer Carter Noel explains, “While the house is extremely formal, I wanted to make it very family-friendly and inviting without taking away from the classical details.” Tom adds, “Carter has incredible taste and vision and understood what we were about, with our fondness for English traditional style.” The home’s well-orchestrated flow encourages guests to experience the variety of spaces and move from interior to exterior with ease. The first-floor terrace at the east flows gracefully with symmetrical curving limestone stairs that lead to the pool and pool house setting – a striking focal point for the axial organization of the outdoor living areas.

From the beginning of the project, Tom and Ruth were determined to give their new residence the same link to the land as the historic English country manors they admire. Blending the home into the hillside began with Tom walking the land to personally inventory the existing trees, selecting approximately 90 that would be spared during the building process. As early as 2006, Meyer Landscaping brought in and planted a screen of 18-foot-tall Norway spruce, Colorado blue spruce and southern magnolias to shield the nearest neighbors from the sights and sounds of construction. To further bond the home to the land, landscape architect Matt Moynihan balanced the formal drive leading to the home’s grand entrance with a series of less formal terraces off the side and back of the residence to “provide an architectural layer between

the house and natural landscape beyond the home.” He notes that a progression of increasingly less formal levels, bridging the space between the home and the countryside beyond, is one of the hallmarks of English landscape gardening. As with selections for the interior of the home, Tom had a hand in choosing most of the 250 ornamental and shade trees and hundreds of perennials and shrubs that provide year-round color and interest to the landscape, making it a breathtaking setting for sharing special occasions with others.

And in that spirit, Tom and Ruth are always in motion – preparing for their next special gathering. Last summer, the Brousters hosted a family reunion and a traditional Fourth of July celebration at their newly completed home, each for nearly 100 guests. These were the first of many occasions that will enliven the halls of the Brouster residence in the coming years. “Our family gatherings typically include as many as 45 to 50 people. We are together a lot,” the couple remarks, happily. “We built this home to share with family.”

Majestic stairs from terraces off the conservatory, kitchen and breakfast room descend, almost like roots, to tie the landscape to the pool area.

Ornate barrelvaulted dormer casings, trim and pediments are limestone, with some surrounds made of hand-carved limestone, reminiscent of the elaborate designs of the Westbury House. A detailed, carved limestone center cupola adds authenticity to the home’s inspired historic background. The proportions of the Greek Ionic order are maintained at every column and pediment throughout the home. Wrought-iron gates and railings by Todd Kinnikin of Eureka Forge are defined by brick piers with limestone caps and lantern lights. The view toward the carriage house speaks to the magnificent design of the setting. See page 78 for design resources.

Lilies in the CITY

A courtyard garden space unfolds in classic white. BY LUCYANN BOSTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB GRIMM

Barbara Barenholtz is a world traveler with a professional background in both retailing and real estate. “She’s very elegant,” says landscape architect Matt Moynihan. “Her home is in tune with her taste.” So when Barbara asked Matt to transform her small Clayton backyard into a special garden 10 years ago, he was happy to create what he calls a “little gem.” “I had just come back from a trip to England,” Barbara recalls. “I was

The courtyard garden is simple, elegant and peaceful.

inspired by the Cotswold gardens. I wanted something lowmaintenance, geometric and classical.” Barbara and her husband Milton Hieken already had a lovely deck that adjoined the sunroom of their home. The sunroom, decorated with a restful color palette by Kris Keller of The Design Source Ltd., included a slate-topped Knoll table and vintage steel wire chairs by Harry Bertoia. Barbara kept the look she loved inside her home and transferred it outdoors. More wire chairs,

a wonderful wire bench encircling a mature oak that protrudes through the deck, and simple striped fabrics set the tone for the garden furnishings. Planters and window boxes softened the rough brick exterior of the residence that abuts the deck. Matt saw his task as tying the deck to the remaining garden space and creating a “little postage stamp formal garden that was simple, elegant and peaceful.” In addition, he had one other critical charge; to incorporate

Built-in planters bring the garden to the deck and are filled with impatiens, dusty miller and silver foliage with perennials (astilbe and lilies) below. Above: The home’s brick façade is softened by flower boxes with summer annuals and cascading ivy. a contemporary “box within a box” metal sculpture by Kent Addison into the design of the garden. Barbara purchased the piece, titled “Maternity,” a number of years ago when the artist was teaching at Maryville University. There was no question regarding the color scheme of the garden. “I love anything white,” Barbara declares. Matt’s first step was to open up the deck and make a broader entrance to the garden. In addition, he flanked each side of the two-step entrance with a deck-height retaining wall and planter boxes that literally brought the garden onto the deck. The rear of the courtyard-style space also came alive with a wall of whiteblossomed climbing hydrangea. The sculpture became the “set piece” to control the color and the architectural lines of the garden. Working with its box-like design, Matt “paved” the center of the landscape with squares of bluestone, centered with soft tufts of fluffy green liriope minor. Referring to the center space as a “lawn panel,” Matt suggests that the flat plane of the area, coupled with the constant green of

the grass-like foliage, acts in the same way as a pool, serving as a resting place for the eye and creating a feeling of serenity and calm. “Ordered spaces give us a respite from the cacophony around us,” he says. Around the outside of the lawn panel, Matt left space for a border of white flowering annuals and perennials such as impatiens, begonias, variegated vinca vine, silver-leaved dusty miller, hosta and astilbe. But to Barbara, the highlights of her garden are the pristine, white ‘Casa Blanca’ lilies that Matt suggested she add to the border. Their midsummer blossoms flourish in the dappled sunlight of the space, and their beauty adds both elegance and fragrance to the garden. To achieve the maximum impact, Barbara treats the lilies as annuals and plants new bulbs each year. While Barbara loves her garden by day, one of her favorite times to be outdoors is on a soft summer night, with candles providing the only light and white flowers standing out against the darkness. “Whether a garden is contemporary or traditional, and regardless of its scale, ordered spaces give people a place for themselves,” Matt concludes. s

family dream

Overflowing with refreshing charm and family fun, a Wildwood water garden sparkles with delight. BY LUCYANN BOSTON

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG RANNELLS

“Some people have a gift for numbers; some people have a talent for music. I like to think that God has given me a gift for rocks,” says Todd Runquist. When Todd talks about rocks, he’s not talking about the kind of stones you can stuff in your pocket. Translate rocks as boulders, the kind of really big boulders that can dam up a stream and create a waterfall. And most often, when Todd employs his gift for working with these natural elements, he enjoys transforming the places where no rocks, let alone boulders, have gone before. As a designer and builder of outdoor water gardens, Todd, who heads West Winds Earthscaping, is used to looking at a piece of flat ground and imagining rushing streams and cascading waterfalls. “Somehow I can see what isn’t there,” he says with a laugh. In the 17 years he has been in business, Todd has created water features large and small throughout the St. Louis area, and his work has been featured in numerous publications. But the water feature that is closest to his heart is in his own backyard in Wildwood. It began as a piece of flat ground adjacent to the ranch home Todd and his wife, Chris, purchased five years ago. A dog kennel was its only decoration. What was once barren is now lush with evergreens, perennials, annuals, groundcover, vegetables, herbs and berries. Central to the landscape are two 20-by-30-foot ponds connected by a stream and a small waterfall. Todd designed both water features with the

couple’s young children in mind. A ledge just 6 inches deep encircles both ponds and allows the children to sit and splash in the shallow water. The pond adjacent to a flagstone patio graduates to 1½ feet, and then 2½ feet, before achieving its final 3-foot depth. The connecting pond is 4 feet deep at its center. Both ponds contain fish and aquatic plants that, combined with the rocks and stream, act as a biological filter for the water. “We swim in our ponds every day during the summer,” Todd notes. “When the kids are older and adept swimmers, I’ll dredge out the bottom

Although surrounded by water features, properly placed succulents thrive in the suburban garden.

of the 4-foot-deep pond to a depth of 8 feet. Over time, the ponds will grow with the family.” Currently, the shallower depths “allow for swimming lessons and interaction with fish, frogs, turtles and dragonflies,” Chris says. Her daughter loves to snorkel and pretend to be Ariel when she perches on the Little Mermaid-inspired benchlike rock her Dad installed under the waterfall. As he does with his clients, Todd planned his family’s water feature to be enjoyed from inside the house as well as outdoors. “Every window inside the house is like a picture frame for the ponds. When I was creating the ponds, I was constantly getting off the tractor to come in the house to see how they would

look through the windows. When the weather is nasty, you can be inside and still enjoy the outdoors,” he says. “When I put in a pond I always like to talk with the people I’m working with to see what interests them. You have to evaluate the property. Where do they sit to enjoy their garden? Do they have kids? Is there a safety issue? I need to locate the focal points in the house. If you are going to invest in a pond, you want to be able to enjoy it year-round,” he adds. Probably no customer of Todd’s has enjoyed their water feature more than Todd enjoys his own. Both he and Chris call it “a little oasis – a playground in the daytime and a retreat in the evening.” “I love what I do,” Todd adds. “I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure I’m not dreaming.” s

Towering Beauty An entry portico makes a grand statement with classically inspired design.

68

www.stlouishomesmag.com

The historic Westbury House, with its lovely, though one-dimensional entry portico, was the vessel that led Tom and Ruth Brouster to the vision of a richly layered structure that both welcomes their guests and provides a striking canopy with its majestic presence. With detailed planning by architect Patrick L. Nolan, AIA, of Pansing, Nolan, Matlock, Ltd., the entry portico at the Brousters’ history-inspired residence makes a monumental declaration with its classic Georgian style. One of the most significant of its influences is Neoclassicism, popularized during the reign of King George III of England. The style – and the portico – embody European and American styling inspired by Classical Greek and Roman architecture and encompass both Palladian and Adamesque Neoclassical style elements. From the cornice to the stepped plinth, the elements that comprise the smooth buff limestone portico follow the ordering of a Greek temple, without the pediment. In sequence from top down are the cornice, frieze, entablature, architrave, and columns, comprised of capital, a smooth shaft, and a base. All rest on three steps that create the plinth. The portico serves as the landing for a walk-out balcony, framed by a wrought-iron balustrade with polished brass finials on the home’s second floor. Wide limestone crown molding and soffit detailing create the cornice element; the size mimics the soffit overhang at the center of the home. A 4-foot-wide by 8-foot-tall six-panel front door is a focal point with a striking leaded glass transom. The substantial size is a reflection of the need to proportion the design elements with the scale of the home. “As with all of the design elements in the Brousters’ home, Tom was a tireless advocate for doing it the right way – he never compromised his vision or expectations of excellence,” says Nolan. See page 78 for design resources.
