So many of our banner days are also day one of a new season in our lives. That’s how I always like to think of weddings—day one of a marriage. It’s a public expression of a couple’s devotion to one another and the lifelong commitment they are making. It’s also the moment at which two people embark on the journey of a shared life. Day one is a symbol of their promise to one another moving forward, and it sets the standard for the weeks, months, and years to come. Certainly that is why brides- and grooms-to-be want their weddings to be unique in every detail. Weddings in Arkansas is a perfect resource for couples seeking inspiration for how to make their big day special in a way that feels completely authentic to them. Wedding trends are shifting and changing faster than they ever have, and this publication is all about keeping you in touch with fresh ideas while empowering you to make choices that you feel are a perfect expression of your bond. For this issue, our team had the very difficult task of narrowing down the many outstanding wedding submissions from around the state in order to finally settle on our five featured weddings. Each time I would see a clever, unexpected detail or an original color palette, I would always wonder, “Why hasn’t anyone ever done this before?” From timeless and traditional to totally new and unique, the possibilities for your wedding day are truly endless, and it is my hope that what you see on the pages that follow will inspire you to create your perfect “day one.”
We fell in love with this floral wall created by Pigmint for our “Oh Happy Day!” feature. Read more about it on the Weddings in Arkansas blog.

With spring and summer weddings just around the corner, we asked the team at Pigmint Flowers & Gifts to ENVISION a setting—perhaps for a rehearsal dinner or small, intimate wedding—fit for a fun-loving bride and groom. Using the clean architecture of Springdale’s Fairlane Station as a backdrop, THEY created a bright, citrus-inspired fête. Producers: Tiffany Adams and Mandy Keener Photography: Rett Peek
10 Weddings in Arkansas | Edition I 2014
Inspired by Scandinavian design, the large main room of Fairlane Station has a welcoming, down-to-earth feel and is the perfect canvas for a variety of palettes, including these bright citrus hues. Bar-height tables paired with grass-green industrial stools for seating are a contemporary approach to traditional dining tables. A flowing banner of tassels, loosely hung along a row of sconces, carries the color throughout the room and adds to the festive feel. Previous page: A pair of bikes—ideal for a newlywed getaway (or arrival!)—greets guests outside the barn doors of Fairlane Station. A garland made from garden roses with gardenia and bay laurel foliage adds a feminine flair to the bride’s cruiser.

CUTLINES
Punched-Up Color
1. Preppy pinks, garden-inspired greens and imaginative shades of coral, peach, and amber create the cheerful palette. Using the floral colors as a starting point, Pigmint worked with Eventures to select linens and dinnerware to coordinate with the hues. The goal was to create a spectrum of shades within the palette rather than to match everything exactly. The dramatic contrast of brights against the black-and-white setting makes for a modern look. Barn-style doors at either end of the room open to invite guests to mingle indoors and outside. 2. The Fairlane Station sign hangs outside the main entrance. 3. The table’s three centerpiece arrangements feature Cherry Brandy standard roses, which have a coral orange exterior and open to reveal amber hues, as well as bright Pink Piano garden roses and kumquat branches grouped together in bleached wood containers.

1. Mary’s Rose, a rosemary-infused vodka lemonade made by Early Bird Catering, is a colorful signature drink. Lemon slices and mint sprigs not only add garnish to the glasses, but also additional flavor. Small polka-dot straws with letterpress jewel toppers mimic the setting’s color scheme. 2. A small sideboard, made from a painted door and wooden slab, is the perfect spot to serve the light appetizers to guests. The Pink Piano garden roses, which are also used in the centerpiece arrangements, create a simple, one-flower bouquet, while cut kumquat branches carry over the citrus theme. 3. Contemporary acrylic boxes hold popcorn to snack on before dinner is served. A variety of toppings, including Early Bird Catering’s signature dill seasoning, allow guests to personalize the treat to their liking.

Stephanie Duckworth & Robert Krummenacker THE DATE: July 13, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Small-screen careers brought together this “big picture” couple. Stephanie and Robert both work in television, and the couple first met at an industry seminar. After their work lives brought them together a second time, they went on a first date and have been together ever since. THE ENGAGEMENT: Stephanie is a devoted fan of the band Train. When the music group announced a performance in Robert’s hometown of Binghamton, New York, he surprised her with a backstage pass. Caught up in the excitement of meeting the band members before the show, Stephanie never saw the much bigger surprise of the evening coming. Surrounded by friends and family, Robert proposed as the group performed the song “Marry Me.” THE PLANS: The historic Capital Hotel is a favorite place of the pair, so it felt like a natural location choice. Stephanie loves the classic décor of the hotel and didn’t want to introduce elements that might compete, but she also wanted the ceremony to have a more traditional and reverent feeling. Her solution? White church pews were brought in for guest seating, and a leaded-glass window provided an elegant backdrop. Stephanie’s personal collection of church hymnals was also incorporated into the décor, adding to the gathering yet another note of Southern simplicity and grace. Tulips were Robert’s one request, a personal tribute to his late father and to memories they shared in Amsterdam. THE BIG DAY: Stephanie tucked wedding day photographs of both Robert’s and her parents inside a bible, and carried it along with her bouquet down the aisle. After taking traditional vows, the couple also exchanged a few personal words— commitments for how they will live together as a family—which they sealed with a high five. Their top priority for the wedding day was to celebrate in a spirit of total authenticity. “We really wanted our guests to see the ‘us’ they see every day,” says Stephanie; “Our entire focus was bringing family and friends together without a lot of fuss…just a lot of fun and laughter.” They danced from the first song—“Endless Love,” a duet by Lionel Richie and Marc Anthony—until the very last song, with no dramatic exit and no fanfare. In place of a honeymoon, Robert and Stephanie shared a “familymoon” in Bermuda with their children as well as Robert’s sister and mother. 18 Weddings in Arkansas | Edition I 2014

Katy Mendelsohn & Parker Brooks THE DATE: June 8, 2013 HOW THEY MET: To mutual friends, these two were an obvious pair. A blind date at a Super Bowl party kicked off a two-year courtship. THE ENGAGEMENT: It was a Sunday morning ritual for Parker to bring a venti latte to Katy when he arrived to escort her to church, and one such Sunday she noticed that her drink was unusually light. Parker had filled the cup with pink roses and an engagement ring, and he had written love verses from the Bible on the inside. As soon as she saw it, Katy says, he knelt down and asked her to be his wife. After church that day, the couple attended a surprise brunch at his mother’s home, where family and friends were ready with well wishes and congratulations. THE PLANS: Katy’s vision for the wedding was that of a “whimsical magical fairytale,” she says, “a modern-day, romantic version of Marie Antoinette” combined with “the enchantment” of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She knew she wanted her colors to be pink and French blue with gold and pearl finishes. Personalization was a priority in all details of the event, and a custom monogram was incorporated into many of the wedding’s elements, from the invitations to the cake. THE BIG DAY: Just before the wedding ceremony, Parker and Katy shared a special “first look” moment at the bride’s parents’ home, after which they traveled in a horse-drawn carriage to the Calvary Baptist Church where, Katy says, they were wed in a “beautiful, Messianic ceremony, blending our Christian faith and Jewish heritage.” Parker remembers, it “was such a special moment; a feeling I will never forget.” The bride wore an antique tiara—a family wedding heirloom; and an abundance of peonies, hydrangeas, and roses in every imaginable shade of white and pink wove through the curly willow chuppah, striking precisely the tone of lavish romance the bride had imagined. A glamorous reception—complete with Lucite columns and floral swans made of white Dendrobium orchids—greeted the 375 guests at the Country Club of Little Rock, where the dinner menu for the evening was French cuisine. The bride’s cake was layered in flavors of raspberry, Italian crème, and white cake. The groom’s cake was a chocolate tiered cake with a bold, black-and-white design, and it was topped with strawberries dipped in white chocolate. The couple honeymooned first on safari in Sabi Sands, and then they spent a week at the Four Seasons in Seychelles. Edition I 2014 | weddingsinarkansas.com 27

Stephanie Bass & Chris Bradley THE DATE: August 31, 2013 HOW THEY MET: You might say that Stephanie and Chris have been in tune with one another from day one. The pair met in junior high school at a choir competition in Monticello. However, their romance didn’t take flight until they reconnected over a dinner date in Washington, D.C. years later. THE ENGAGEMENT: For weeks, Stephanie had expressed an interest in going to tour President George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Chris acted as though it were any other Saturday outing and took her. They walked around the beautiful grounds until he found the perfect spot overlooking the Potomac River. As the sun set, he got down on one knee and asked her to spend the rest of her life as his wife. THE PLANS: After graduation from college, Chris and Stephanie both moved away from Arkansas and haven’t lived here since, so it was important to both of them to be married in their home state. Since they would be planning the wedding long distance from Washington, D.C., they were hopeful to find a reception venue that was all-inclusive when it came to tables, food, and setup. They found just what they were looking for at Little Rock’s Clinton Presidential Center. “We were immediately sold on the beauty of the open space and the windows in the great hall,” says Stephanie. The center’s design was also in line with the modern, elegant look the couple desired for their big day. “Yellow has always been my favorite color, so it was another must-have,” says Stephanie of the palette selection. The cheerful hue, along with contrasts of black and white, was used throughout the ceremony and reception. THE BIG DAY: After witnessing Stephanie and Chris exchange vows at Trinity Presbyterian Church, the wedding party headed to the Clinton Presidential Center for the celebration. Guests dined on a wide selection of fare including chicken and waffles, salmon, fresh fruit and cheese, and a mashed potato bar. The bride’s cake was a four-layer confection featuring strawberry, chocolate with raspberry filling, and two layers of butter cake, all topped with cream cheese icing. The groom’s cake was a tribute to his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, and it bore the brotherhood’s crest. After a surprise fireworks show, the happy couple made their way down President Clinton Avenue to the Capital Hotel in a horse-drawn carriage as well-wishers waved sparklers in the night sky. As a final celebration, they departed on their honeymoon, a three-week-long, five-city tour of Asia. Edition I 2014 | weddingsinarkansas.com 35

Kate Squires & Jeff Stambough THE DATE: October 5, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Kate and Jeff met in their intern year of residency during their rotation in the ICU. “It wasn’t as romantic as ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’” they say, “but we knew it was something special from the beginning.” THE ENGAGEMENT: Being residents, both Kate and Jeff work long hours and keep early bedtimes. After one particularly long week, the couple went to dinner at a favorite sushi restaurant. Jeff’s plan was to propose when they arrived back at the house, but Kate fell asleep as soon as they were home. “He paced the hallway the whole night and then nervously blurted it out the next morning over breakfast. It was perfectly unplanned and natural,” she says. THE PLANS: Kate and Jeff spent a year planning their wedding. The couple wanted to highlight the beauty of fall in Kate's home state of Arkansas, so an outdoor venue was key. They chose October because it offered fall color, yet it’s still warm enough for guests to be outdoors. After finding Marlsgate Plantation and meeting with David Garner, they knew they had the ideal location. “Mr. Garner places such a personal touch on all that he does,” says Kate. “Since Jeff is from Cincinnati, a majority of our guests were not from Arkansas, and we wanted them to truly experience the Southern hospitality in which he specializes.” THE BIG DAY: Kate and Jeff exchanged vows on the steps of the historic plantation while the sounds of The John Jarboe String Quartet serenaded them and more than 170 friends and family. From there, it was on to the plantation’s tent for dinner and dancing. Guests dined on local duck, wrapped in bacon and served with a plum dipping sauce, along with chilled shrimp, and grilled pears for appetizers. They enjoyed a traditional Southern-style meal of pork tenderloin, sweet potato casserole, corn soufflé, and local green beans for dinner. “The menu for the event was purely Southern. We wanted the food to be a reflection of the local produce,” says the couple. The cake was equally as exquisite—a four-tiered confection featuring a base of buttercream with orange and lemon zests and a spritzing of Grand Marnier topped with buttercream icing. The couple shared their first dance to “Dancing Shoes” by Green River Ordinance. “It’s a little-known song that means something truly special to us,” says Kate. After an evening of celebration, the newlyweds made their exit down the plantation’s walkway through a tunnel of sparklers held by well-wishers. Edition I 2014 | weddingsinarkansas.com 43

Brittany Arroyos & Doug Murray THE DATE: September 21, 2013 HOW THEY MET: Sometimes you find your soul mate early on in life. Brittany and Doug were lucky enough to meet at a concert in high school and have been smitten ever since. THE ENGAGEMENT: After dating for eight years and graduating college, Brittany accepted an internship with Seventeen magazine, and Doug was accepted into an advertising program. Both positions required them to move to New York. Before the big move, the couple boarded a cruise to Italy with Doug’s family. On the last day of the trip, Doug led Brittany to a fisherman’s pier where they observed the water and envisioned their new life together in the big city. After carrying the ring in his pocket the whole trip, waiting for the right moment, he dropped down on one knee and proposed. Too surreal a moment, Brittany’s initial response was, “Is this real life?” She then followed it with an eager “Yes!” THE PLANS: Brittany and Doug first met in the month of September and are both fond of the transition from late summer to early autumn in their home state of Arkansas, so the date was a clear choice. They sought a venue that felt secluded, yet captured the al fresco splendor of the state, and they found the view from the Whitney Mountain Lodge incomparable. Brittany envisioned the day as a “fuss-free, woodland fairytale” that would stay true to their quirky personalities and vintage taste. “I like whimsical touches to classic things,” she adds. THE BIG DAY: Brittany didn’t arrive at her wedding as she would have expected. After fracturing her foot three months before the wedding, she was forced to put aside her heels. Instead, she found sea-foam green Vans sneakers that fit the color scheme and served as a reminder of when she met Doug (she was wearing Vans then, too)! Paired with her “big fluffy white dress,” the bride and groom had their first dance to “Such Great Heights” by Iron & Wine. Close family and friends dined on miniature cheeseburgers and grilled cheeses, as well as a mashed potato bar and an assortment of other food at the reception. When it was time for the newlyweds’ exit, guests set off paper wish lanterns into the night sky as the bride and groom drove away. Edition I 2014 | weddingsinarkansas.com 51
