HUMBOLDT CANNABIS MAGAZINE

SPRING 2022

The soil and sunshine of Humboldt County yield the most sought-after cannabis anywhere. But it’s also the product of the people who tend it and the land it grows on, generation after generation. It’s not something you can set up overnight. In this issue, along with sharing sources for that fine local product, we’ll introduce you to some of the folks who raise and refine it, and the bonds that connect them to this place and each other. Recent years in California have been marred by devastating wildfires. And like so many farmers, cannabis cultivators on the North Coast have faced the twin disasters of seeing the landscape and their livelihoods imperiled, and in some cases destroyed. In our story on the impact of recent fires, you’ll hear the experiences of local farmers and how they’re pulling together and planning ahead. That’s not the only way small cultivators are coming together, either. We’ve got a forwardlooking story on cannabis co-ops and the nonprofit workers helping small operations come up with business models to help them compete against the corporate giants already moving in on the industry,

and hopefully preserve the character and quality of Humboldt cannabis. Restoration is on our minds, too. Recent grants distributed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are being put to good use in our county and elsewhere in the Emerald Triangle to repair the damage done by illegal grows on public land and elsewhere. We’ll break down how the funds from taxed sales of legal cannabis are going toward healing the rivers, plants and fish of our watersheds that have been harmed by black market cannabis. We’re also talking to Jeremy Kurtz of Humboldt Known, whose hemp-derived CBD water, supplements and gummies are not only popular with customers, but the cancer patients who receive them free in care packages. As always, we’ve also got a sampling of our favorite Humboldt products, zeroing in on the region's amazing extracts. And, of course, a packed listing of local cannabis producers you can browse by company and farm or by product to get your hands on the best our county and its cannabis community has to offer. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill

When the

SMOKE CLEARS Cannabis farmers cope with years of loss and prepare for the next fire season By Carly Wipf

AS THE AUGUST COMPLEX fire ripped through the

Emerald Triangle in 2020, Humboldt cannabis farmer Sequoyah Hudson remembers the fear she felt not knowing when flames might reach her property. “It was really scary because we were literally seeing embers fall on the ground, and were having to sit there and put them out,” she said. Hudson was one of many Northern California cannabis farmers who lost crops to the 2020 August Complex fire, which burned 1,032,648 acres across Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity, Tehama, Glenn, Lake and Colusa counties. year, the Knob, McFarland and Monument fires continued to devastate family businesses. Unsure what will happen this next fire season, growers are preparing for the worst. Some say they are not planning to grow cannabis at all, some may harvest early, while others are ready to face the flames. Hudson’s farm, 8 Mile Family Farms, has a cultivation area of just under 20,000 square feet. She estimates about 75 percent of the farm’s crop was unusable in 2020 and 25 percent couldn’t be cultivated in 2021. The smoke gave her plants an ashy smell and taste, which made them unsellable. The

family joked about selling the product under the name “2020 Aroma.” “But it wasn’t really funny,” she said. What was harvestable was simply left in the ground, chopped down or composted. Hudson said it was too expensive to harvest, trim and pay taxes on cannabis that wouldn’t turn a profit. “It just wasn’t worth it to go through all that effort and maybe get your money returned, and not even make any money,” she said. “It just was overwhelming, especially after having such a loss from before.” The financial loss was so great that Hudson and her husband plan to hold off on growing HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2022

cannabis this year. In the meantime, her husband is working as a contractor and she is busy advocating for other cannabis farmers. Hudson works at Humboldt Sun Growers Guild, a collective that provides services to cannabis businesses. The guild partnered with Redwood Roots, another cannabis company, to evacuate people and products from farms during the 2020 fires. Hudson is thankful they didn’t have to evacuate anyone last year but they are prepared to evacuate farms again if necessary. But not every farmer wants to evacuate. Duncan McIntosh, who currently grows produce, was growing medicinal cannabis at the time

his cannabis crop wasn’t destroyed by last year’s fires. The team was able to harvest its plants at the first sign of smoke and freeze them for storage. The majority of Booney Acres’ 640-acre property burned so most of the flammable brush is gone. But smoke and ash particles from nearby fires still pose a concern. Brown said using the fresh-frozen method can help save cannabis plants before they are tainted by ash. “Even if you have to cut it a little bit early, at least with fresh-frozen, you may get something out of it rather than nothing,” Brown said. While the future for cannabis farmers remains uncertain this upcoming fire season, Hudson said she takes comfort in the fact that farmers across the Emerald Triangle will continue to look out for each other. “It is really cool to see the camaraderie that comes out of disasters and everybody working together, being in touch and being available as resources, whether it’s providing tools, machinery, food or going to check on the place next door,” Hudson said. “It just reminds you that your neighbors or your community are there for you.” Carly Wipf (she/her) is a freelance reporter who's covered communities across Northern California. of the Helena Fire, which ravaged the Trinity Alps Wilderness in 2017. He remembers the impact of losing his cannabis crop when the fire seared the bottom half of the McIntosh Farm in Willow Creek. “I could hear propane tanks exploding. I could see [fire] on the ridge that hopped to the river and at that point, my wife pretty much grabbed me by the collar and said, ‘We’re leaving,” McIntosh said. “It was the most depressing and helpless feeling I think I’ve ever encountered .... My homestead is my life. It’s not just a home, it’s a way of life and leaving that was traumatic.” After evacuating once and realizing the fire department wasn’t anywhere close to his property, McIntosh returned to save his land and plants. He and his neighbors chopped down flammable trees and cleared brush as fire roared in the distance. “We stayed and defended our lands,” McIntosh said. He added the fire department was overwhelmed ensuring the fire didn’t spread to Weaverville. “They didn’t even know that it burnt the whole bottom of my property and then on top of it, once we were there, we could not leave. This is a direct parallel to my experience during the Monument Fire.” McIntosh didn’t leave the area during the Monument fire, despite official orders to evacuate. If 2022 brings another blaze, McIntosh said he will “absolutely” stay again. “Nobody knows my water system like I do and nobody is going to care about my property like I do,” he said. “That’s why many of us have stayed.” Jeremy Brown, co-owner of Booney Acres farm in Trinity County, counts himself lucky that

is on the forefront of sustainable and environmentally friendly cannabis farming, the scars of harmful, illegal operations can linger long after they’re shut down, sometimes on public lands. Water diversion and pollutants can damage soil, rivers and fish for years to come. But thanks to a recent round of funding, the county is getting a boost in its efforts to restore crucial watersheds. In April of 2021, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife solicited grant proposals for watershed remediation and enhancement projects. Through CDFW’s Cannabis Restoration Grant Program there were $2 million ready to allocate to worthy recipients. This money comes from the tax paid on cannabis products through California’s Environmental Restoration and Protection Account. According to Maggie Massie, senior Environmental Scientist at CDFW, the tax “created a dedicated funding source that is continuous appropriation, to focus for the first five years on the cleanup, remediation, and restoration of environmental damage and watersheds affected by WHILE HUMBOLDT

cannabis cultivation and related activities.” This is a time of environmental reckoning with past cannabis cultivation, including the use of water diversion and pesticides, and these grants are crucial to restoring what has been degraded for decades. Public agencies, nonprofits and tribal governments are all eligible for the grants. After receiving seven proposals, CDFW awarded $966,649 to four exciting projects. “These awards ensure California’s vital biodiversity in priority watersheds is being enhanced and protected,” said Jeremy Valverde, CDFW’s Cannabis Program director. The approved projects vary in scope and concept. “We are committed to working with organizations of all sizes to support a variety of remediation projects that improve and sustain California’s delicate ecosystems throughout the state,” said Valverde. The Watershed Research and Training Center based in Hayfork received $172,691 to treat road sediment in the Barker Creek watershed. Barker Creek is northeast of Hayfork and drains into Hayfork Creek, which eventually runs into the South Fork of the Trinity River, a vital home for salmon, among other wildlife. The funds will be used to collect baseline data, develop plans and implement projects to reduce sediment impacts to anadromous fish populations in the watershed. The Integral Ecology Research Center (IERC) in Blue Lake will use a $388,855 grant to work with other local groups to remove trash, active water diversions, environmental contaminants and old infrastructure from illegal grow sites on public land. This project includes sites in Monterey and Trinity County. In 2017, IERC, whose stated goal is the “remediation and restoration of every last illegal cultivation site that remains,” was awarded a grant through the Cannabis Restoration Grant Program to remove refuse from 100 illegal grows on public land. Its efforts removed 148,000 pounds of trash, 727,000 feet of irrigation pipe, 83,000 pounds of fertilizer and 1,000 pounds of concentrated pesticide. Another grant went to the Salmonid Restoration Federation, based in Eureka. The amount of $277,936 will go towards designing, permitting and implementing a water storage and augmentation system for Redwood Creek in Humboldt

County. The project will take place on a 1,000acre parcel recently purchased by Lost Coast Forestland, where approximately 7 million gallons of wet season overflow will be stored in ponds. The water will supplement summer dry season flows in upper Redwood Creek, where it has been “bone dry, summer after summer,” according to Dana Stolzman, executive director of SRF. Forested waterways like Redwood Creek comprise some of the best coho salmon habitats in Northern California and, with enhanced flow, refugia for juvenile coho can be restored. This project is one of several working to “meet

ENVIRONMENT

16

our target flow goal of 50 gallons per minute and flow augmentation from the headwaters to the confluence,” said Stolzman. The Wildlife Conscious Certification received $127,167, to be administered by the Humboldt State University Sponsored Programs Foundation, a university-adjacent nonprofit whose main role is to administer externally-funded grants. With those funds, the WCC will conduct an 18-month pilot project that aims to “establish the WCC, refine its criteria with input from stakeholders and experts, install wildlife enhancements on four demonstration farms and monitor wildlife response,” said Matt Johnson, HSU wildlife professor and co-director of the project. It will continue to use scientifically based management practices to inform certification criteria as the project evolves. The long-term vision for WCC is to become a voluntary certification that verifies and encourages farmers’ best practices toward wildlife conservation. In addition to these four grant recipients, CDFW announced in August of 2021 that it is accepting concept proposals for its Qualified Cultivator Funding Opportunity until Dec. 1. This program will distribute funds for increased cleanup, remediation and restoration “that may be unaffordable for many smaller cultivators, and also promote environmentally sustainable practices,” said Valverde. These funds are not given directly to cultivators but can be acquired through eligible organizations, such as nonprofits, government agencies or tribes. (Read more about Qualified Cultivator Funding at www.nrm.dfg.ca.gov.) We can’t gloss over or ignore the past, but we can acknowledge that the destructive ramifications of illicit cannabis continue to run into our creeks and rivers, affecting entire watersheds, fish populations, soil health, upland and lowland areas. Combating these elusive and ruinous methods can seem daunting, but with funding comes action. When licensed cannabis is economically successful, it means increased revenue for ecological restoration. It’s time to let Northern California’s magnificent and unique watersheds heal. Hollie Ernest (she/her) is a botanist and forestry technician. part of Humboldt County’s economy, but an evolving market and strict regulations are putting local farmers at risk of being pushed out by large companies. As more and more competitors flood the market post-legalization, cannabis cooperatives are emerging as a way for family farms to survive and compete. Cooperation Humboldt, a local nonprofit helping small businesses work sustainably together, is leading the charge to educate farmers about how they can use cooperative business models to their advantage. “Whether you consume cannabis or not, there is the need for a cooperative economic system because corporate cannabis is coming — it’s here — but not nearly as much as it’s going to be over the next several years,” said David Cobb, executive director of Cooperation Humboldt. “We’re gonna see an onslaught and what we’re trying to do is to create systems to produce, grow, manufacture and distribute cannabis in truly a cooperative way.” But creating a cannabis cooperative can be confusing, expensive and chock-full of regulatory restrictions. This is why Cooperation Humboldt is partnering with local cannabis farmers who have experience forming co-ops to create a Cooperative Cannabis Economy Group, which HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2022

ers about formal and informal cooperative business models and help them form a cooperative if they so choose. The first group, which is starting now, is comprised of farmers from the Salmon Creek area, dubbed Salmon Creek Legacy Farms. “The cannabis legacy farmer is a big part of the reason that Humboldt County is what it is because, frankly, we would be like the Appalachian region, if not for cannabis — just one more extraction zone of poor rural people exploited and oppressed by the big corporate extractors and dominators,” Cobb said. “We need to protect and defend the cannabis farmer, the local legacy cannabis farmer who has protected us.” So how exactly can cooperatives help and protect legacy farmers? Cooperative work can save farmers money and increase income through sharing resources, such as equipment, insurance, transportation, packaging and branding. Unlike traditional businesses typically owned by a single individual, multiple members own, run and use products produced by members in a cooperative. Local co-op founder Drew Barber said keeping farms small can also help local farmers maintain their culture and produce a higher-quality, artisanal product.

“The smaller farms can pay attention to their individual plants and their individual plant needs, and end up at the end of the season with a flower that has a better taste,” Barber said. The cannabis giant ended the Sept. 3, 2021 quarter with $286 million in cash, according to its financial reports. Cordoni said this type of competition in today’s market is simply too much for small farmers. “I don’t see any other way except figuring out: How do we pull together so we can do collective marketing or cooperative marketing? Can we do cooperative sales?” Cordoni added that banding together is the only way to ensure small farmers

don’t get “wiped out” when pitted against “predatory capitalism.” “People are getting desperate and seeing, ‘I can’t do this all alone,’” she said. In a survey with 82 respondents, Cooperation Humboldt and the Center for the Study of Cannabis and Social Policy found more than 85 percent of cannabis farmers across Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino were interested in cooperative business as a way to reduce the burden of high production costs, low prices expected by consumers and an inaccessible market. Barber saw the cultural and financial benefits of small farms working together early on and founded Uplift, one of the first cannabis-friendly co-ops, after Proposition 64 legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older. Uplift lowered insurance, bookkeeping and branding costs for local cannabis businesses, but that success did not come without a series of setbacks. Barber, who initially reached out to see how Cooperation Humboldt could help train new co-op members, is now one of many local experts advising the organization as it crafts the curriculum for farmers. Barber’s biggest hurdle in creating a co-op was deciding which type of co-op to form. After launching Uplift as a cannabis cooperative, he re-established Uplift as an agricultural co-op due to rigid land-use restrictions placed on those who form cannabis cooperatives. Cannabis cooperatives cannot operate on more than a combined four acres of land, making it nearly impossible for a group of small farms in

HUMBOLDTCANNABISMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2022

Humboldt to band together and compete with a large-scale operation holding multiple licenses. The California Department of Food and Agriculture once championed a one-acre cap on cannabis farms but this cap was scrapped, allowing individual growers to stack licenses to grow cannabis on larger amounts of land. Not enforcing an acre limit saturated the market with more cannabis than could be sold. Meanwhile, co-ops can still only operate on a combined four acres of land. This made it all the more difficult for small farmers to get ahead. “Those acreage caps essentially made cannabis cooperatives irrelevant and not useful,” said Nicole Riggs, with the Center for the Study of Cannabis and Social Policy. “Unfortunately for farmers, that means that we’re looking at alternatives.” Riggs said those alternatives can include working with trade organizations like Origins Council, or Humboldt County Growers Alliance to lobby for changes or removal of co-op acreage caps or seeking out alternatives to forming cannabis cooperatives, like forming agricultural or marketing cooperatives that support production. The research is ongoing to see what the cannabis community needs, she said. Shawn Cherry of Cherry Valley Farms, a cannabis farmer who is a member of Cooperation Humboldt’s first Cooperative Cannabis Economy group, hopes it will help the participating cultivators create their own brand as a collective and decide which type of cooperative entity to form. “I’m really excited about having a roadmap for

Uplift’s infancy. “I’d love to help people not make those kinds of mistakes so that they can be more successful,” Barber said. “I want there to be more co-ops. I want my farther out neighbors to succeed as small farms and I want them to be forming cooperatives to do so.”

After a crash course in the legalities of owning a hemp-based company, several years of developing processes, testing products, and fighting for legitimacy as a business, as well as some initial resistance from the city council, Kurtz and business partner Tim Bones set up shop in Fortuna in 2016. Humboldt Known was born and the rest is history. Kurtz seemed endearingly in awe of the company’s triumphs: “We didn’t mean for all of this to happen … we didn’t even mean to start a business, it just took off on its own.” Two things in particular make Humboldt Known stand out: its commitment to quality and its commitment to community. “We raised the bar for a lot of other CBD companies,” Kurtz said of their products and processes. On the day he spoke with HCM, Kurtz was busy at the Humboldt Known factory in Fortuna, working on the production line, putting in the same love and labor that has consistently gone into the company since its inception. But later that evening, after respite from a long day of work, Kurtz was more than happy to share how Humboldt Known came into being and what makes it special. Many disparate things seemed to come together around the mid-1990s for Kurtz, bringing the earliest iteration of Humboldt Known into focus. As a self-proclaimed “water snob” and an employee of South Fork Mountain Water Co., Kurtz became interested in water system technologies and dreamed of owning his own operation. Around the same time, someone close to him was diagnosed with cancer and Kurtz started exploring the benefits of CBD and its potential as a wellness alternative. He believed that CBD could offer relief and comfort for those suffering from a variety of JEREMY KURTZ,

current rules — or lack thereof — regarding hemp. “The FDA has dragged its feet when it comes to CBD … Other ‘bathtub products’ on the market need regulation.” Aside from the standards they’ve set for themselves, Humboldt Known is also working to set the bar high for others. In fact, Kurtz is a member of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, a coalition of companies and organizations committed to safe hemp and CBD products. Humboldt Known has several products available, its flagship development being the gallon jugs of Redwood Coast Hemp Water. Gummies (back by popular demand!), a topical cream and capsules for better sleep, focus and inflammation are also part of the hemp-derived CBD lineup. The capsules are competitively priced. “We put a lot into these capsules,” says Kurtz, “we make sure they’re worth every penny.” Kurtz and company have also worked to drop prices as inflation rises, which you can see first-hand on retailer’s shelves. According to Kurtz, water-based products, like those created by Humboldt Known, have significantly higher bioavailability than oil-based products, which make up the bulk of what’s on the market. In layman’s terms, you get more bounce for the ounce and more bang for your buck when CBD is delivered via water. Customers have confidence in the quality and effectiveness of Humboldt Known’s products, as evidenced by the testimonials on Humboldt Known’s website and the many times Kurtz has been approached in person by someone singing its praises.

Humboldt Known has also set the bar high for how a business interacts with its customers and community. Kurtz jokes, “It’s a bigger investment than Bitcoin.” Kurtz, Bones and production manager Angie Gearhart care deeply about connecting people, especially those with severe illnesses and ailments, with CBD products that may help alleviate symptoms. Humboldt Known makes care packages with its products for folks with cancer — free of charge. It also donates funds back to the Humboldt County community where it was founded. “We didn’t do it for the money, we did it for the people,” Kurtz reflected. That’s the stuff good businesses are made of. Cassie Curatolo (she/her) works for the English, Philosophy, Journalism and Communication Departments at Cal Poly Humboldt. She enjoys gardening, roller skating and reading.

QUALITY MATTERS

FARMS DIRECTORY

Here at Full Moon Farms, we pride ourselves on being one of the small craft farms nestled in the hills of Humboldt County. Being a craft farm means working with nature, respecting the land, always using organic methods and bringing you the highest quality cannabis that we can produce. Our family has been in Northern California for 7 generations, and we care deeply about our community, and give back to it as often as we can. Craft farmers have

a chance to break the traditional corporate model by putting people before profit, not always doing things the easy way, but doing things the right way — like a water neutral system that utilizes rain catchment and the use of companion plants to help with pest management and plant oil production. You can always feel good about our flowers. Come taste the difference and see for yourself why the hills of Humboldt are so legendary. – Nik Erikson
