I am delighted to welcome you to the NHSG Careers Fair.
The support from the organisations and individuals for this event has been excellent and we consequently have over 30 exhibitors attending. The exhibitors will be able to explain to you, in detail, the varied careers and courses on offer within their organisations. They will also showcase the wealth of opportunities open to you here in the North East.
My advice to you when considering your future career is to keep an open mind. Find out about a whole host of jobs and professions – some of which you may already be familiar with and others which will be completely new to you. With the huge growth in technology, you may even find out about the jobs of the future.

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) is a defence engineering company based in the UK. We design, manufacture and support military vehicles used by the British Army and international customers. Job title: Healthcare and Life Sciences Equity Research Analyst
NHSG alumna, Leolie attended Newcastle University for her Bachelor’s in Pharmacology and Masters in Neuroscience. Leolie then completed her PhD in Neuropharmacology at the University of Edinburgh when she was involved in the creation of a spin out company based on her PhD data Post-university, Leolie worked at Airfinity, a life sciences data analytics start up, specialising in infectious diseases and advanced therapies. She now works in healthcare and life science equity research at Peel Hunt, a leading UK investment bank
Company description:
Peel Hunt is an investment bank specialising in UK-listed equities The business is split into three areas: advisory; research and distribution; and execution. Advisory provides services such as mergers and acquisitions, and financing. Research and distribution includes the sales team, as well as the equity analysts who determine which stocks to buy, sell or hold. Execution involves the traders who perform trades for clients, as well as Peel Hunt themselves. Each business area is split into industryspecific teams, such as healthcare and life sciences.
Role in company:
As an equity research analyst, Leolie’s main role is to advise clients and Peel Hunt which UK-listed healthcare and life science stocks to buy, sell or hold. To do this, she needs to understand each company, as well the market in which the company operates, in great detail; this includes the financial aspects, but also how the management teams are performing. Leolie uses financial modelling and forecasting to calculate the present and future values of a company and determine if now is a good time to invest.

I have always worked for children and families and have significant experience in child protection and court proceedings. Most of my career has been working in Court covering cases from private law to public law. For example Court of Protection, Deprivation of Liberty, criminal proceedings, gang violence and complexities on race/ethnicity.
I am currently employed by Cumberland Council in their Children with Disabilities Team. Children with Disabilities is a more unique team of social work whereby families are seeking support assessments to consider Need and Respite packages due to the challenges faced by their child having severe disabilities.

NHS Doctor - Consultant Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeon (Miss Sarah Kettle)
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeon and I have been working in NHS practice for the last 11 years. I completed my certificate of Specialty training on the West of Scotland training programme in 2012 and started my consultant career in Sunderland Royal Hospital. I then moved to James Cook Hospital in August 2019 to work with a bigger multi-disciplinary hand team.
My favourite part of the job would have to be the hand trauma part of my role as you never really know what is going to come through the front door. It could be anything from a fingertip crush in a car door to 3 to 4 finger amputation from an industrial machine or lawn mower!
I completed a year-long fellowship at the Pulvertaft hand Centre in Derby working with orthopaedic and plastic surgical Specialty hand surgeons. I have conducted research in nerve repair and achieved an MD degree and have passed the hand diploma organised by Manchester University in 2013.
I have always been a keen teacher and feel it is one of the most direct ways to make an impact on more junior members of the team. I have helped organise medical student and postgraduate Specialty trainee teaching sessions and courses since starting my career as a consultant. My own love of learning makes me passionate about teaching, supporting and mentoring the next generation or surgeons. I’m keen to make a difference people tend to remember their teachers and mentors for an entire lifetime, I am driven by a desire to help and support those around me, and I feel privileged to be potentially able to mentor and contribute to the development of those just starting out in their careers.
