We wish your daughter all the very best for the future. It has been a privilege to be part of her life and to help her prepare to take on the world. NHSG and its founding Schools have been educating girls like your daughter since 1872 and for almost 150 years the generosity of others has made our School and its forerunners open to bright, dedicated and talented girls, regardless of their financial circumstances. In the UK today, 60% of children from the poorest households do not achieve five GCSEs at school, leaving them without the basics they need to access further education or secure a good job. This is not just a personal tragedy for each and every one of these children, it also has profound consequences for society and the economy. Working with the SHINE Trust we offer educational support to expand the horizons and increase the aspirations of primary school children from some of the North East’s most disadvantaged areas. We work with these children to help raise their ambitions by encouraging them to become more confident and positive about the value of education.

NHSG Sixth Formers volunteer with this programme and our Scholars’ Fund was created to enable our Sixth Form girls to give the gift of an NHSG education to the children they worked with. Every child deserves the best start in life – regardless of background or where they live. When your daughter started her school career with us you paid a deposit and we are now asking whether you would consider donating that deposit to our Scholars’ Fund on behalf of your daughter. We already have two pupils from the SHINE programme enrolled as members of our School and with your generosity we will be able to give a life-transforming education to another girl. If you do decide to donate your deposit your generosity will be acknowledged with a seahorse pendant bearing your daughter’s name on our Scholars’ Fund chandelier. Thank you,

Mr M Tippett Head

NHSG is educating the leaders of tomorrow, our bursaries are an investment not only in the lives of the individual girls but in all our futures. Jo was awarded a bursary to study at Central Newcastle High School and left in 2004. She is the Founder and Director of architecture charity, AzuKo, and her passion lies in humanitarian work, disaster relief and sustainable development.

‘It all comes back to education. It enables us to consider our options and to make informed decisions. It opens up our minds to new possiblities of a better way, connects us to a wider world, builds our confidence and resilience, and gives us control of our own lives. I have built my life and career on the determination that every inch of kindness counts. I’m striving to pay forward the many opportunities and lessons learned over the course of my life, starting with my time at School. Strong educated girls become a force to be reckoned with and a force for good. Girls, I ask you now, let’s stand together and make this world a better place for all.’
