from thepublishers The boys should be happy. They’re getting a brother. Before the ultrasound tech asked us if we were absolutely sure we wanted to know the sex of Baby Stafford, Tommy claims he had already spotted the junk. They say sometimes the baby is modest. Ours is apparently an exhibitionist. A boy! A dude. A little hombre. When he’s 16, he can help daddy deliver magazines. But in the meantime, there are more important things to think about. Like, should the zip line go from his tree house down to the creek or, better yet, from the deck to the bottom of the hill? I’ve always wanted a tree house but in order to have one, you must own a tree. I never did. Tommy did but he didn’t need a tree house to get into trouble. Cotton trailers and matches sufficed. There is something in the water out here (wine, beer, whiskey). We’ve got a set of twin girls down the road, an army of boys on up and around this highway, and I absolutely love it. Fisher Price Dance Party 2009, bring it on! There’s talk about a skate park coming to Nelson. I can’t wait. The soccer, baseball, tennis – all of that’s here. So is the music: the mandolins, the cellos, the flutes. And we haven’t even crossed over to Rt. 250 yet. We don’t have to.

There are horses, goats, chickens, and sheep. And they don’t live in cages. Our son will have beagles to play with and a cat. Speaking of the cat, Angelo brought us two squirrels last month. He managed to drag one of them to the bumble bee doormat on the deck. The other one we found on the stoop. Though he deserves to eat these critters, Angelo doesn’t. He just sits next to them and guards them. Angelo is a trophy hunter. And a boy. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com

Summer Wines Summer’s heat brings to mind cool white wines and spicy rosés. Think of rosé as the red wine drinker’s summer wine, although summer need not preclude one from drinking red, especially when chosen to compliment a dish. The following red, white and rosé have all proven themselves to me as great warm weather wines. Berrano Gavi, 2005 – Gavi is both an appellation and a wine of the Piedmont region of Italy. When I think of the Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian), that haven for gourmands, the wines that come to mind are the great Barolos and Barbarescos, both red. But Gavi is a dry, fresh and fragrant white, with aromas of flowers and citrus, made from the Cortese grape. The taste, with nuances of honeysuckle, lime and vanilla, is more complex than the price suggests. Great lunch wine, with fish or any light meal. $10.99 Château Miraval, 2004 – In the Côtes de Provence where once quality was questionable, Château Miraval proves exceptional—a unique, historic wine estate in the France’s sunny south. The white made from the Rolle grape displays a round expansive palate and a long citrus-tinged finish. Very elegant. Serve

with delicate fish dishes or when trying to please wine snobs. $21.99. There is also a stunning rosé, which I think is one of the best of the year, very pale amber, made from 100% Cinsault, $21.99. And a deep, berry-scented red, rich and complex that will evolve nicely over 3-5 years. Earthy, spicy, delicious. $22.99. Tavel: Tavel is a region in the southern Rhône next to Lirac and Châteauneufdu-Pape; it is also a wine, a rosé to be precise, for all Tavel is rosé. Tavel is considered by the French (or at least by the inhabitants of Tavel) to be the best rosé, as evidenced by the big sign when you drive into the city, proclaiming “Tavel, home to the best rosé in France.” How’s that for advertising? What I like about Tavel is that, in part due to its high alcohol content (the hot summer days of the southern Rhône insuring ultra ripe grapes), it can be paired with heavier dishes, and thus fills the role a red wine would when paired with barbecue, salmon or sausage on a hot summer night, but served chilled, it remains cool and refreshing. Tavel is always dark in color, amber colored or orange tinted, with hints of Seville orange, melon, anise, strawberry and raspberry. Château Ségriès, Tavel, 2006 - $16.99, Vignerons Tavel, Carte d’Or,

2007 - $14.99 and Domaine de la Mordorée, - Tavel $21.99, Côtes du Rhône $15.99 – Mordorée, which means woodcock in English, is one of the great producers of the southern Rhône, using all sustainable methods of agriculture. Domaine du Carra, Juliénas, 2007 – Juliénas is one of the ten Beaujolais cru, though rarely will you see the B word on the label, so you just have to memorize the crus. Often maligned because of the hype of Beaujolais Nouveau, a different breed altogether, the cru Beaujolais named after their villages are some of the most lovely and delightful wines—uncomplicated, satisfying, smooth and always full of ripe, fruity Gamay. They make for the quintessential summer red, perfect picnic wines. The lighter Beaujolais, such as Villages, Nouveau, Chiroubles or Chénas can even be chilled. Domaine de Régusse, 2007- Here is a wonderful discovery from the Alps of Haute Provence, a light, fruity, soft and delicious red, 100% Pinot Noir. And you thought Provence didn’t cultivate Pinot Noir. Excellent with cheeses, pastas on a summer evening. $12.99 Kay Pfaltz is co-owner of Basic Necessities in Nellysford.

STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

The year was 1979.

Gas was $0.86 a gallon. Your Sony Walkman cost $200. And Tim Gorman was sweating a Santa Cruz 5-ply.

“These are my original Tracker trucks from 1979,” Tim says, showing off his board’s underbelly. His homemade deck is much like the one he rode nearly 30 years ago. “It’s based on a Santa Cruise 5-Ply. But note the cabernet franc reserve on the label.” A board’s decals are a rider’s graffiti so the cab franc sticker is fitting for Tim, who manages the vineyard at Cardinal Point. But back to the board. “These [wheels] are old,” Tim says, giving the fat rubbery discs a spin. “These are reissues. They’re modern wheels but they’re based on wheels from ‘79.” Tim’s nostalgic love for the sport is much to blame for the mobile skatepark set up at the back parking lot of the Rockfish River Elementary School. I got an email from Tim earlier in the year telling me he had just formed Skate Nelson (also known by its 3-letter logo, SK8), a non-profit group trying to create a firstrate community skate park. Little did he know that I, too, was a closet boarder.

Not so much in the closet is John Howard, the manager of the Freestyle shop at Wintergreen Resort. He showed up with a bag full of elbow and knee pads to donate to the program. He also brought along his son, Jonah, 13. “When he came out of the womb, I was standing him up on my skateboard and riding him around the house,” John says, chuckling. Like Tim, John skated old school, beginning in the early 80’s with a Powell Peralta. Today, he’s on a Freestyle deck. “I’m 35 years old and I’ve never grown up,” John says. “I want to say that it’s attributed to decently healthy living and riding a skateboard.” Unlike their sons, Tim and John grew up with places to skate: pavement, sidewalks and curbs. The nearest skateparks are some 30 miles away which is why a venue in Nelson County, John says, would be great. “We need a place where we can bring all the kids

A non-profit group of skateboarders aiming to create a skatepark in Nelson County, you can keep up with Skate Nelson online at SkateNelson.org.

together. A place where everyone can come and sit down and get together.” With help from the Nelson County Parks and Recreation Department, the mobile park is on loan from Augusta County and the City of Waynesboro. The Blue Ridge Community College Trucking School delivered the trailer at no cost. Local wineries – Cardinal Point, Flying Fox, Wintergreen and Veritas – stepped up as sponsors to offer the Skate Park to boarders for free. Members of Skate Nelson are currently researching sites for a permanent park. Watching his son wax a rail, Tim senses the popularity of the mobile park is a taste of things to come. “It’s great to have some pavement to ride on. It’s good to see people out there. And older people, too, like me.” Old guys who remember $0.86 gas and the feel of a 5-ply on Tracker trucks. NCL

These days, it’s a good idea to get to the Nelson Farmers’ Market as early as you can before the popular stuff sells out. This year’s bumper crop of local cherries is making its way to tables across the county in the form of cherry pies and crumble! The Market is located in Nellysford adjacent to Wintergreen Real Estate. It is open Saturdays 8 a.m. until noon.

“Move on” or “Move in”

Creating a win-win situation for buyers and sellers

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

This is a buyer’s market and buyers are in control, or are they? You might be surprised to know that many offers being submitted to sellers are not being accepted. Unfortunately, when an offer is rejected, there are no winners. Both parties may be left feeling defeated, since neither achieved the desired outcome. If you don’t want to be on the losing end of a win-lose or loselose situation, you may want to follow these guidelines to help your receive, or make, an acceptable offer. Seller Tips Price the home right; In a buyers market you must rely on sold comps to paint a realistic picture of market activity. If you set the asking price at the lower end of the recommended selling range, you will be more likely to get an offer. Appeal to your market; customize incentives to the buyer when possible. Creative incentives, such as a free trip with purchase, may not appeal to every buyer. A reduction in price or money

toward closing may be much more alluring. Prepare for visitors; Have your home de-cluttered, cleaned, repaired, and basically sparkling before you put it on the market. Make every effort to keep it in that same showing condition! Be flexible about showings; don’t make people jump through hurdles just to see your home. If the house is vacant – let it be shown anytime. Otherwise use the “call, no answer, use lockbox” approach. Anticipate the offer; market conditions don’t necessarily yield an offer at asking price. Consider the reality and determine in advance your desired outcome and bottom line. Don’t dig your feet in the sand; even though you have a bottom line, don’t absolutely refuse to budge. Consider other aspects of the offer. The cost of holding out could have greater financial and emotional consequences. Buyer Tips Be prepared and pre-approved; at-

Meticulously Maintained and Upgraded!

tach a pre-approval letter with the offer. In order to take a home off the market, a seller needs reassurance that finances won’t kill the deal. Do your homework; ask your agent for a market analysis. A purchase price decision should be based on current market data derived from recently sold comps. Offer quick money; if you are making an offer substantially below the asking price or the fair market value, offer a quick closing. Settlement in less than 30 days may be enticing to a motivated seller. Minimize contingencies; a onesided offer may get you no where. If you need money toward closing costs, ask for it. If you must sell your home, request a home sale contingency. (Explore other options before using a home sale contingency; this is the most rejected contingency because no one knows when or if your home will sell.) If contingencies are requested, don’t also expect to get a price reduction, the appliances, and the family heirloom.

No Subdivision & No Restrictions!

Don’t fuss over the non-essentials; identify needs verses wants and prioritize them. Hold firm on your priority needs, but be willing to compromise on things that are not at the top of your list. Be reasonable; Most offers are never ratified because the parties can not come to terms on price. If this is the property that you want, is it worth losing over what might be an incremental increase in a monthly mortgage payment? Don’t let emotions cloud your judgment. Whether buying or selling make the most of the current opportunity. When an offer is negotiated to a point of agreement, a win-win outcome is achieved. Sellers can “move on” while buyers “move in”! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

July 5 marks the fifth anniversary of The Ebony And Ivory Street Riders’ annual fundraiser in Roseland. Money raised from the event goes to various local causes the club supports. For more information, visit EbonyIvoryStreetRiders.com.

Classic Cars. Who could not appreciate the unmistakable American craftsmanship that is now long gone from our highways and byways? As a photographer who specializes in vintage automobiles, it was a no brainer that I chose The Ebony and Ivory Street Riders as my first official interview on behalf of this magazine. On their web site, the Ebony and Ivory Street Riders mission statement reads as follows: Our mission is to provide an honorable car club for persons of any race or gender that want to participate. To create friendships and special bonds between its members and supporters. To cruise the highways in a safe and legal manner. To help support the com-

Formed in 2003, The Ebony and Ivory Street Riders currently boasts 39 members including (l-r) Victor and Brenda Dunning (pictured with their 1975 Corvette), Club president Bobby Cabbell (shown with his 1975 Corvette), and Brenda Cabbell, pictured with her nephew’s 1979 Camaro.

munity, local authorities, volunteer safety and area events in order to help bring awareness to whatever the cause may be. The history of the club’s name is very interesting. Back in the ‘80s, local Nelson County baseball teams played many games at the Ebony And Ivory Baseball Field in Roseland. The founders of the Ebony and Ivory Street Riders all were a part of this piece of baseball history and thought it only fitting that they name their car club after the playing field. Starting out in 2003 with just five members, their numbers have now increased to 39. As of last year, they are proud to include five women in their club. “We’ve always been into cars all our lives,” says

club president Bobby Cabell. “It’s one of the only things to do when you’re living out here in Nelson County country. We knew of people in the community restoring their cars individually so we thought- why shouldn’t we join together collectively as a group? We can accomplish more and get more exposure.” Members of the club help each other with the process of restoration on their individual cars. They have formed an automotive co-op of sorts which helps members locate hard-to-find parts for their vehicles. Joe Gaines owns a 1972 Camaro and when asked about rising gas prices, he gets a twinkle in his eye. “Believe it or not, my car actually gets better gas mileage than yours. You drive yours everyday and mine sits in the shade six days a week!” NCL

graves grocery STORY by ELIZABETH FERRALL PHOTO by TOMMY STAFFORD

Graves Grocery owner John Lim and his daughter, Sun, run the counter during a busy afternoon. Old favorities like the breakfast biscuits will stay on the menu, but expect to see specials like vegetable lo mein. If you live in the Nellysford part of the county, or drive through it, you have probably heard that Graves Grocery has changed owners. After owning Graves for 22 years, Greg Shifflett has sold the store to the Lim family. “Don’t expect anything to change,” said Sun Lim. “Everyone is comfortable with the store the way it is.” Sun and her parents, South Korean immigrants Angela and John, have relocated from Northern Virginia, to run Graves. They are a friendly family, who also run a campground in West Virginia. After just over a week behind the counter, they are already beginning to recognize some of the regular customers.

“I really like them” said Kayalan Clark, a familiar face to Graves’ regulars, who will be continuing to work at the store. “They are really friendly, and fun to work with.” Greg has stayed for the first few weeks, to help the new owners get accustomed to running things, but he will be moving on. He shrugs and confides that “I’m really looking forward to a Monday through Friday job.” He won’t be moving from the area, or retiring, but he has a smile on his face when he says that he is looking forward to fixing up the house, and maybe doing a little fishing this summer. When I asked the important questions Sun laughs

and says “Yes, we will still have the biscuits for breakfast, and the menu will stay the same. But we will add some different daily specials.” The Specials Board listed vegetable lo mein with two pieces of chicken, on the day that I stopped by. I heard about a rib eye sandwich special one day, “Everyone loved it,” said Kayalan. Sun’s smile is reassuring when she says, “The name will stay the same, the store will stay the same, we will keep selling gas, we are planning to get a new menu board, but the items listed will still be the same.” So the owners are new, but they are planning to keep the good stuff. STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

30 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2008

Oh vinegar mother where art thou? In the steel pot, of course, protecting the vinegar as it converts from wine. The by-product has been shown to aid in the healing process in artificial skin graft operations.

Inside the old post office building at the Alberene Soapstone plant is a pot from an old whiskey still. Welcome to Schuyler. A friend of Jay Rostow’s had tipped him off about a steel kettle that was available in a barn on the other side of the James River. “It was still partially buried under some hay,” he says. “And we found this 80 gallon stainless steel still pot that had been plumbed properly to make some of Buckingham County’s finest shine.” These days, the pot makes vinegar sourced from surplus wines from area wineries. Jay operates the company, Virginia Vinegar Works, with his wife, Steph. When Jay pitched the idea to Steph, she thought it was “another one of his crazy ideas.” “First I thought it was kind of a wacko idea,” Steph says. “But actually, with all the wineries around, it might not be a bad idea [I thought].” Case in point: in the middle of the building sits a pallet full of rejected dessert wine. Not only can the Rosotws re-use the bottles for their vinegar, but the wine itself – though not suitable for resale – will make a perfect dessert wine vinegar. “You’ll find that most wine makers have at one time or another had a product that would have found a wonderful home at a vinegar plant.” Even so, sour wine doesn’t necessarily make great vinegar. “We can’t truly start with a bad wine. You can start with a wine that has what’s called volatile acid problems ...” We know people with volatile acid problems. “ ... [it’s] basically on the way to becoming vinegar on its own.” And that’s where the Rostows step in. First, they store the rejected wine in barrels until they can convert each individual batch. “We take the wine here and start out with a sort of a sourdough-like process where we’re taking some unpasteurized vinegar from the previous batch, which contains the aceto bacteria that’s responsible for converting alcohol to acetic acid, and we use that as a starter for the batch.” He then mixes in two parts wine to one part water to thin out the alcohol content. The mixture gets poured into a stainless steel vat – or old whiskey still pot – where it begins the conversion process. A leathery layer of bacterial cellulose known as vinegar mother begins to form on the liquid’s surface and acts as a protective shield during the delicate conversion phase. Once conversion is complete, the vinegar is aged to smooth out some of its inherent sharpness. The batch then gets bottled and labeled for purchase. “I don’t even buy salad dressing anymore since we started making our own vinegar,” Jay says, sniffing a cup of a young white wine vinegar. “It’s just oil and vinegar on the greens, or just vinegar on the broccoli or the brussel sprouts. Or vinegar as a poaching liquid for fish ... We use more vinegar now than we ever did before and it’s quite healthy.” Not to be left out, a local brewery has supplied the Rostows with a batch of uncarbonated malt beer that will be turned into malt vinegar that restaurants can serve over a basket of french fries. “It’s to die for!” Jay says. Ketchup is so 2007. NCL

Jay and Steph Rostow own and operate Virginia Vinegar Works out of the old Post Office building at the Alberene Soapstone Plant. You can get their vinegar at Feast! in the Main Street Market in Charlottesville. For more information, call Virginia Vinegar Works at 434-263-5795.

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT

After reading about the vandalized North Branch School project truck in our magazine, Carelton Luck of Stoney Creek decided to donate $500 to the program. “I’ve always been interested in automotives and it sounded like a nice opportunity to try to help kids growing up and have them hopefully get interested in something to do with automotives, ” he said. North Branch parent David Ferrall, who heads up the auto shop, was able to replace the vandalized truck with a Nissan pick-up he won at this year’s Batesville Day truck raffle. He says Luck’s donation will be put to good use. “North Branch doesn’t have any tools so I was thinking some basic hand tools for the auto shop would be good. The truck does need a muffler, needs some buffing, maybe a little painting, and maybe we can use some of the money for that.” The finished truck will then be auctioned off at BandFair, an annual school fundraiser held at Cardinal Point Winery.

All That You Leave Behind As technology continues to breed newer, more advanced technologies, the relative pace of the average American continually presses onward. Who would have imagined in the year 1908 that one could hold a camera, date book, phone, typewriter, clock, radio and photo album all comfortably in the palm of your hand by the year 2008. From a technology standpoint, most of us are but mere pawns in an international chess match between companies pouring billions into the next super gadget. However, from the vantage point of our landscape, we are in control of the foundation we leave for our children. For every landscape, there are species that transcend time and leave us with the foundation that will be enjoyed for many years to come. Without these species, tire swings, hammocks, bird nests, fresh air, tree forts, lawn furniture and Plow & Hearth are much more difficult to realize. They are not part of the landscape, they ARE the landscape – creating microclimates under, around and next to their canopies that will either take the life of surface rooted plants or produce life in their massive limbs and trunks found within. It is a necessity to plant around these species while they are young but always keep in mind that in the evolution that all landscapes experience, one day you will be transplanting or removing

snapshots

other species due to these mammoths’ overall size and future growth. So for the calculated landscape planner, here is the legacy that you leave to the future generations of children, critters and the cause of leaving this world a bit better than your contractor left it… White Oak – No tree can match the breadth and majesty of this wonderful tree. Deodar Cedar – This is not the first or last time that this selection will make it into Sam’s Gardening – it is gardener friendly, creates a wonderful graceful form and creates a 12 month escape for all feathered and fury friends alike. Southern Magnolia – No landscape is complete without this heirloom. Norway or Blue Spruce – In form and utility (Christmas tree), few trees offer as much form to the 12 month landscape. Sugar Maple – One of the region’s best fall colors cannot be easily sidestepped for some of the more aggressive growers. Shagbark Hickory – The large specimens found on the Blue Ridge speak for themselves – the bark is amazing, the fall color beautiful the drought tolerance incredible. American Holly – Nothing says Christmas better than our Native American Holly with its red fruit and deep green foliage.

Katsura Tree – Michael Dirr of the University of Georgia, considered one of the leading horticulturists of our time, states that, “if I could only plant one tree in my landscape, I would choose the Katsura Tree”. Enough said. Weeping Willow – When located near a water source, few plants can offer the splendor displayed beneath its branches on a breezy summers day – the ultimate feeling of ‘Ahhhh’. Black Gum – The deep orange red foliage is enough in itself to plant this specimen. With its slow growth rate, this

tree will be around long after the last curtain call. As easy as it is to write and read about these species, I can only hope that each year gardeners and landscapers alike pick up the shovel in preparation for the planting of one or more of these wonderful trees. Then and only then will I feel like that we offer as much sweat and tears to the environment and future generations as we speak about in opportunistic settings. For what we have taken, here’s to what we leave behind. Until our next article, happy gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine

Dear Dr. Cole, I keep getting tick bites. Do I need to worry about them? Not all ticks are infected with bacteria – in fact most are not. The most common tick born illnesses seen in Virginia are Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Lyme Disease is transmitted by infected deer ticks. After several days to weeks most infected people will develop a painless rash. As the rash gets larger the center clears giving the “bull’s eye” that people talk about. Other symptoms may include headache, fever, muscle and joint aches and tiredness. Untreated Lyme Disease can affect joints, the heart or the nervous system. Infected dog ticks can spread Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever which causes the sudden onset of fevers, chills and severe headaches. After several days a rash develops around the ankles and wrists that spreads to the rest of the body. It can be deadly if not treated. You can prevent tick born infections by avoiding the ticks. Tick infested areas like tall grass and dense vegetation should be avoided. Tucking your pant legs into your socks prevents ticks from crawling up them and light colored clothing makes

ticks more visible. You should frequently check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks. Tick repellents are available both for people and pets. Removing ticks as soon as possible is important because most authorities believe that ticks needs to be attached for 24 hours before an infection is spread. Ticks are best removed by grasping the tick close to the skin with forceps and gently pulling straight out. Try to get the whole tick – leaving the mouth parts in the skin may cause irritation at the site. Avoiding ticks and removing ticks as soon as they are discovered are the best prevention of Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Awareness of symptoms is important because these infections are easily treated in early stages. If you are concerned about tick borne illnesses or are not comfortable removing a tick be sure to see your doctor. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Active Gaming There is a term coined from companies such as Atari and Nintendo to describe the virtual, interactive games that are available on the market. The phrase is “active gaming.” The Wii is a popular choice and more games will be on the market in the future. The ability to move around physically with a game on TV such as volleyball or tennis can be fun and has some benefits. Already, the Wii is being utilized in nursing homes and assistive living facilities to get the elderly population moving even if they are confined to a wheelchair. For young brain injured patients, it is incorporated in their therapy for balance and coordination skills. These programs make rehabilitation more interesting for young injured persons and can bring joy to less abled older persons. However, for the able bodied, the virtual games should not substitute actual physical activity or exercise such as games or sports outside. And, the Wii should not be considered an exercise replacement for able bodied individuals. Why shouldn’t it? One reason is that exercise needs to elevate your heart rate for a sustained time of 30 minutes for cardiovascular training to increase your endurance. Walking, running, swimming and riding bicycles are beneficial. Game

with other adults or children such as kickball, soccer, tag, jump roping, dodgeball can be fun family events. Or make up your own game. Now, that summer is here, the pool or lake are great venus for fun. The sustained running and jumping builds bone strength, muscle strength, balance and coordination for all individuals. In addition, being outside and away from the TV improves mental focus and it improves sleep. Participation in recreational or school sports is also very beneficial. It appears these days that many are trying to specialize in one sport at any early age in order to excel or become a star. I suggest a change in focus – participation in many sports and involve as many children and teenagers as possible. Be inclusive to all to teach the benefits of physical exercise, sportsmanship and team work. It can be one tool to help address the continued rise of childhood obesity. So, save the virtual games for a rainy or oppressively hot day or less able bodied person. And remember with most electronic games, it will be replaced by something else next year (so save your money). The good old plastic or rubber playing ball has been around forever and still offers lots of fun.

Another reason why people trust Afton Family Medicine.

Natural Cures for Headaches. Two-thirds of all adult men and greater than 80 percent of women in developed countries suffer from headaches, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). People who suffer from chronic daily headaches amount to a staggering 4 to 5 percent of the world’s population, surpassing the rate of many other illnesses. The most common medical treatment today involves dangerous medicines THAT ONLY COVER UP THE HEAD PAIN. “Dangerous, you ask. Consider this. Aspirin and other similar drugs actually kill more than 2,000 Americans EACH and EVERY YEAR. Tylenol itself claims 450 lives every year. Headaches are simply indicators. Like the “check engine light that may come on in your car’s dashboard, it is a warning signal. Something’s wrong. Taking medication is just like putting a piece of tape over the “check engine light in the car. It may make you feel a little more comfortable in the mean time, but soon you’ll have a serious problem. So what’s the

“I’ve always wanted to go to Paris. Paris is the thing I am most excited about, says rising Nelson County High School sophomore Martina Cook. Though she has never traveled to Europe, she’ll have her chance next spring. “I want to go to feel the new cultures and see everything that’s different. For the past six or so years the NCHS Foreign Language department has organized a trip to France. “It costs about $4000 a kid, says Sarah Ponton, the school’s foreign language chair. The kids begin raising money a year in advance, doing everything from working the concessions at John Paul Jones arena, to organizing raffles and selling t-shirts. This fall, they’ll be selling peanuts. “Because of their financial situation at home, some kids are very poor and they really, they have to work their butts off for it, Sarah says.

One of the group’s largest fundraisers is a captain’s choice golf tournament held July 18 at Winton Country Club in Amherst County. “It’s a great opportunity for these kids to get out of the country, says Jenny McCarter, who is helping coordinate the tournament. Her daughter is planning to be on the spring trip as well. NCL Those wishing to help the group can sponsor a hole at the tournament for $100. The club is also looking for people and groups of four to play in the tournament. For more information, email Sarah Ponton at samponton@embarqmail.com or call her at 434.831.2932.

alternative? Are there alternatives? Is there actually a CURE - let alone a “Natural cure - for headaches? On June 25th I taught a class on headaches to a sold out group at the Nelson Center. The class was a two hour symposium called Natural Cures for Headaches. From acupuncture and chiropractic to herbs and self massage, all kinds of remedies were explored. The most important thing we discussed was finding the cause of the headache. Now that’s a novel concept. Participants walked away with detailed, printed class notes and techniques that even the novice could begin using the very same day! Based on the high demand, an expanded version of the symposium will be repeated in the near future. At DelFosse Vineyards & Winery, the alternative to Deere and Bobcat may be Llama and Sheep.

STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

6 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 008

Bonnie and Lito are both almost six feet tall. The couple herd sheep on a vineyard for a living. They don’t really like dogs all that much. And they eat grass. Bonnie and Lito are llamas and part of the newest addition to DelFosse Vineyards and Winery in Faber. The two camel-like animals were brought in along with about 30 sheep by vineyard manager Grayson Poats last fall. Like most of the world, he’s working on cutting costs. “We have them here [because] it’s nothing more than a money saving effort,” Poats explained. The llamas came from family friends of the DelFosses and the sheep from a neighbor down the road. “They do a great job keeping the area mowed for us so we don’t have to spend time and diesel fuel keeping that area maintained.”

The vineyard itself takes up about 100 acres in total, but the small herd can’t quite handle that much grazing. For now, they maintain about 10% which Poats says is already a big help- he hasn’t mowed in that area since October. He hopes the sheep will eventually be able to wander the property over the winter months to keep the area maintained and provide a source of natural fertilizer. For now, they graze on what used to be the old apple orchard. Bonnie and Lito will have to stay home, though. “They tend to eat things higher up off the ground,” said Poats. “Even the dormant grape vines might be open to their attack.” Also open to their attack? Anyone trying to hurt their sheep. Llamas in general are social animals and like to be

with others. Since llamas are few and far between in Nelson, Bonnie and Lito are settling for smaller woolbearing animals. Poats said they became immediate herdsmen and watch over the sheep. Once, a dog followed Poats up to where the animals live and made the mistake of going in the fenced area for a visit. “The llamas very, very quickly charged that dog, had him pinned up against the corner of the fence. From what I understand, if that intimidation doesn’t work, the next thing they do is rear up and actually come down on the dog, coyote, wolf, whatever it is.” Fortunately, Poats was able to get the dog out safely, but doesn’t think he’ll be back any time soon. I bet the Three Little Pigs wished they had llama body guards. NCL

As a way to cut down on soaring fuel costs, DelFosse Vineyards & Winery in Faber is using a pair of llamas and a herd of sheep to keep the property mowed.
