from thepublishers The baby garden’s doing well and thanks to Tommy building a fence around the thing, the deer and rabbits have stayed away. So have our dogs. Over the years, we have told you about our dogs’ odd taste buds. There was the olive oil binge a couple of years ago, which if you remember, was followed by an olive oil purge. Our beloved Millington crunched on dry wall once to reveal a snout full of white powder reminiscent of the Studio 54 era. Angelo the cat likes cream and squirrels. Things dairy and hairy. And all of the pets, to varying degrees, have enjoyed feasting on our poor vegetable garden. Not this year. The tomatoes are safe, as are the squashes and zucchini. Which means we’ve been enjoying the tomatoes in our omelettes, and Baby Stafford will be eating a lot of puréed zucchini. Yum. Have you ever puréed zucchini? Better yet, why would you ever purée zucchini? Baby food, of course! Puréed strawberries look adorable when you freeze them in those heartshaped silicone muffin molds. We poured the peaches in the round ones. Once those were done, the zucchini was next. If liquid Kryptonite existed, puréed zucchini would be what it looks like. Our dogs love steamed Kryptonite.

Once the slices had cooled, I fed them each a few pieces. Nick, as territorial as he is, raced back to his pillow to finish his off. Jerky stayed at my feet knowing that the more he stared at me, the weaker I’d get. Or was it the Kryptonite? By the way, I need to thank the mystery person who left the gift on our porch a while back. You left no card so we’ve never been able to thank you. So, thank you! And, for the record, Taylor and Mandi named their “Full Nelson” Hayden Thomas Smack, not Hayden Taylor Smack. Blame it on my pregnancy brain. It’s been puréed. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com

Domaine de Trévallon Part I My friend Alice J. Brinton handed me a bottle of Domaine de Trévallon on the same day that, earlier and by chance, I tasted the wine in the Répaire du Bacchus, a wine shop on the rue du Cherche Midi, now no longer. I always considered this an unusual and fortunate coincidence and from that day in the late eighties I have been fan of this wine from Provence (technically Bouches du Rhône), and it has never disappointed. In 1973 when Eloi Dürrbach and his wife Floriane began the Trévallon dream, the wines of Provence were still for the most part regarded as dubious— simple, summer rosés at best. But with the beginnings of certain estates (Mas du Daumas Gassac in the Languedoc and Trévallon in Provence), the reputation of France’s southern wines began to slowly change. In 1955 Dürrbach’s father bought the farmhouse at the northern edge of the Alpilles, a haunting and beautiful limestone crest whose scrubland makes the perfect environment for growing olives, almonds and grapes. But it was not until 1973 that Dürrbach left the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he

was studying architecture and decided to make wine. Thus the fun began. Dynamite was used to break up the rock and the ground was worked at a deep level, melding the splinters of rock into the soil. In ’73 he planed his first three hectares of vines, and in 1976 produced his first wine. On an autumn visit just before harvest I spoke with Floriane, once the mayor of St-Etienne-du-Grès, the nearest town. Tulip, her yellow lab joined us strolling through the vineyards—fifteen hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and two hectares of Marsanne, Roussanne and Chardonnay. Floriane handles the sales and marketing and Eloi works the vineyard and cellars. Now Trévallon sells all over the world, but Floriane recalled a time when she would take their old car with kids in the back and travel from one restaurant to the next to take orders for the wine. That to me seems amazing, considering Trévallon’s reputation today. It is the red wine of Trévallon (the name comes from “Trés Vallées” or “three valleys”) that have always enchanted me, and as we walked in this magical setting Tulip seemed to agree, preferring the red grapes over the white

(and the Syrah over the Cabernet) as she trotted along, snipping a bite here and there. I can’t remember if the bottle Alice gave me was a ’76 or ’78, but I know it was good. On the visit I bought a 2000 which in the cellar was rich and full, tasting of toffee, earth, and rich dark fruit. It was perfectly balanced and structured and I’m saving it in my own cellar, letting the magic that has always been Trévallon do its own things.

got And views? would you like to enjoy them? Is there any place in the world as beautiful as Nelson County in the summer? In my personal opinion, I would say there isn’t. And, come fall, Nelson’s foliage is breathtaking. There is nothing better than enjoying each season, and all the spectacular splendor that Nelson has to offer right from the comfortable setting of your own home. Every time I am driving through Nelson County and see all of those gorgeous homes with their windows facing those amazing views, the blinds and curtains are all pulled. Why are these spectacular views being blocked out? Am I missing something? Should you not be soaking in the view from your Nelson dream home, enjoying the sense of openness and flow from the outdoors to the inside of your home? I have to believe that it is not the homeowners’ fault. With all of that sunlight pouring in it has to be very hot, and very bright, and not to mention the fading of the floors, furniture, and everything in between. What is a homeowner to do? Of course they want to enjoy their views, but they don’t want everything in their home destroyed by the sun, and that air conditioning just can’t keep up. Fortunately, there is a solution that can solve everyone’s problem: 3M Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting. Window film allows homeowners to still see out of their windows, and to keep out the damaging rays of the sun. Look at film like a water filter. If you put a water filter on your tap, you eliminate the harmful chemicals in

your water. Film will eliminate 99.9% of the UV rays, and can reduce the amount of glare by as much or as little as you like depending on the film you choose. What about all of that heat gain that comes through the windows? Film takes care of that as well. It used to be that darker films were more effective. Thanks to 3M, that is no longer the case. With its new Prestige line of window films, Clear View Window Tinting can now apply a clear film to windows that will reduce as much heat and fading as some of the darkest films out there. What about the film going bad, peeling, or changing colors? 3M has taken care of that with a residential lifetime warranty. If anything goes wrong with your window film, 3M and Clear View Window Tinting will replace it free of charge. 3M was rated the third most innovative company in the world last year by Money Magazine ( just behind Toyota, and Google ) for being a world leader in adhesives, and many other products. The 3M name is one to stand behind. So please get those views back that you fell in love with the first time you saw them. Having Clear View Window Tinting install 3M window film on the windows in your home will make you see Nelson County the way it was truly to be intended, and that is by you. To find out more about the amazing new films from 3M Corporation, call Darin Martin, Jr. with Clear View Window Films at 434-996-TINT (8468) or go to www.clearviewtint.com.

“It’s an aging population,” says Nelson County Extension Agent Mike LaChance, speaking of the typical beekeeper. “If we don’t do anything, people will get older, get out of the business, and we’ll have a further reduction in [bee] numbers.”

continued from page 12 With help from a state grant aimed at increasing the honeybee population by attracting beekeepers to the fading hobby, Mike is training people, like Larry Whitaker, to raise the insect. “I’m as green as can be when it comes to knowing about the bees,” Larry says, guiding his wheelchair to his leather shop inside Blue Moon Antique Mall & Bookstore in Lovingston. “They’re doing all the work. It’s pretty amazing that they do all that in the dark, in that little box.” Amongst an array of leather saddles and scabbards sits a wooden hive drying from its first coast of primer. Once painted, it will join a stack of hives behind the building. The first batch of honeybees are already feeling quite at home. Mike suits up and starts a smoker to calm the bees as he inspects them.

Mike is carrying on a tradition that began in Virginia in the 1600’s. As Europeans colonized the region, they brought honeybees which then formed their own colonies. In recent years, the bee population has been dropping, mainly from winter starvation, disease and mites. The trend was wiping out an average of 31% of the state’s colonies. But losses increased last year when more than half of the bee colonies disappeared due to an unexplained phenomenon scientists term Colony Collapse Disorder. As honeybee numbers dwindle, farmers are forced to replenish the population by importing bees from other places. The long term goal, Mike says, is to offset the imports by building up Virginia’s beekeeping industry. “We are somewhat limited in pollination opportunities,” he says. “The apple crop, other crops in the state, require bees to be brought in, especially our higher value crops. So the idea of having a bee industry in Virginia is very attractive. We are importing a lot of bees from other states and with that importing of other bees to do pollination, you increase the risk of Africanized bees and such.” As Mike inches closer to the hive, he lifts out a honeycomb. “What you want is a high number of bees ready to go in March and April to catch that big honey flow which is in the spring time,” he says. “And then, in a good year, you should be able to get two, three, maybe four supers of honey coming off the hive, each of which is 25 pounds of honey.” As he fiddles with the hive, Mike feels a sting. “It is just a fact of life,” Mike says as he slowly walked away from the hive. “If you’re going to keep bees, you’re going to get stung.” Because Mike didn’t react violently to the sting, the bees have settled down and have gone back to work. After all, Mike is a guest in their home. “It is a true act of altruism by the worker bee because that rips out of her back end,” Mike says, grabbing a pocket knife to coax the embedded stinger out of his arm. “She is dead. She is dying when she stings you. But that bulb is the poison gland and that will continue to pump poison into you.” Keeping the safe distance of an observer, Larry doesn’t get stung today. But it won’t be long before the beekeeper-in-training suits up. “It’s not as complex as it appears but it’s like anything else,” he says. “There’s time and expense. But it’s a neat hobby and it’s a lot of fun. But it’s seasonal. You have to pay attention to the season and the bees, as I said, they do most of the work.” NCL

SUMMER SCOUTING

Piney River Boy Scout Troop 32 just got back from a week of Boy Scout Camp at Camp Powhatan. The youngest scouts spent time on Brown Sea Island where they learned the basics of scouting. The remaining 9 older scouts worked on merit badges at the Powhatan camp and Claytor Lake, participating in activities such as sailing, shot gun sports, first aid, space exploration, and emergency management preparedness. The boys were part of more than 1,000 scouts from across the country attending camp on this 16,000 acre scout reservation in southwestern Virginia. Even the big boys in the group, adult leaders Dan Hunt and Stuart Smith, participated in several classes in addition to keeping a watchful eye out for the boys all week.

givingback Heather Collins of Lovingston was severely injured in an auto accident and needs help covering health and transportation costs. You can contribute to the Heather Collins Benefit Fund at your nearest Union Bank & Trust branch. Helping Heather Heather Collins is not a biker. But in her time of need, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts are creating a big push for fundraising. The Nelson County Southern Cruisers Riders Club, one of sixteen chapters of the Riders Club in Virginia, is a new club – they just opened the chapter in October. Sure, they ride bikes together, but one of their main goals is to raise money and help those in need. 21-year-old Heather Collins of Lovingston was injured in early June in a single car accident on US 29 on the Nelson/Albemarle County line. One of her numerous injuries is a severe brain injury, one that was originally not going to be covered under her health insurance. From the beginning, the Southern Cruisers has promised to raise money, with the help of the community, to help Heather get down to the Shepherd Center, a small, but highly-specialized brain injury facility in Atlanta, Georgia.

Finally, in early July, Southern Health agreed to cover the costs of Heather’s treatment at Shepherd, but not her transportation costs. Heather is not ambulatory, so she requires ambulance rides from place to place and a specialized flight for the majority of the trip. “Just traveling expenses is very phenomenal with gas prices the way they are,” said Rhonda Ponton, a member of the Nelson County Southern Cruisers Riders Club. “So whatever it is they need, we will want to try to be able to cover it for them.” The Southern Cruisers held a 200-mile ride to raise money for Heather on July 5 in addition to a 50/50 raffle at the Car and Motorcycle show at Sparrow’s Café in Nellysford. According to a post from Heather’s grandmother, Paula Collins, to the Nelson County Life web site on July 15, Heather is in Georgia and already getting treatment. Her family has been with her when they are able and her boyfriend is visiting often as well. NCL

wildnelson We like it when loyal Nelson County Life reader Ann Strober of Nellysford gets trigger happy with her Nikon. She writes: “I have developed a habit of looking out my deck doors to see what’s out there. One day I looked out to my left, towards a bird house. There was a dark thing on top. I grabbed my binoculars and saw that it was a big black snake, later identified as a racer because of the white markings on its face. I took a few shots from the deck and then went down to the lawn. I continued to shoot from various angles and moved closer and closer. The snake began to enter the hole and soon it was entirely inside. The nesting material occupied half the height so it was remarkable that the entire snake could fit inside. A little while later you could see the head of the snake peeking out. It extended out and withdrew several times. I backed up to give it a greater sense of safety. It began to leave the bird house and make its way down the metal post. The young bird sat atop the wooden post not sure what to do. The mother bird began to approach the snake. You could see her on the fence getting closer and closer. Once the snake was off the post and on the ground the mother bird began to aggressively fly at the snake, pecking it. The snake disappeared into the field, probably into its burrow ...”

Looks like Ann needs a snake guard. Milly Colella, the Nelson Coordinator for the Virginia Bluebird Society, knows a thing or two about installing them. You can reach her at 434-361-1348 or at rolmil1@verizon.net.

Marlo Allen’s mission trip to Port Au Prince was organized by Haiti Outreach Ministries. For more information, visit them online at HaitiOutreachMinistries.org. Marlo Allen of Nellysford – who happens to pen the At Home with Marlo column – just got back from a mission trip to Haiti. She writes: Misty, my niece, and I were in Haiti June 28-July 5th. We celebrated the 4th of July in Port Au Prince where we visited several churches and schools that we sponsor through Haiti Outreach Ministries. Misty and I both sponsor a child at the Blanchard School which is one of the schools that we worked on painting the vocational training rooms and the library. Our team also assisted with a retreat for 150 church leaders and provided computer training to many teachers.

Our church, West Waynesboro Church of Christ, did not have enough people or funds to send our own team, so Misty and I traveled with a team from Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg which sends a large team every two years. There work and funds have built several churches and schools and provided meals and clean drinking water to many families and children ...

pasta, passion, pistols! STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTO by TOMMY STAFFORD

And you thought Stoney Creek was a nice, quiet neighborhood. As Odette Henderson’s famous meat balls simmer in the crock pot, the cast of an upcoming murder mystery dinner is rehearsing its lines – and getting a little violent. Pepi Roni’s dead and his killer could be anyone. Father Al Fredo, Clair Voyant, Marco Roni; they’re all suspects. A cast member shrieks and lunges at Odette, as another chuckles and sips on a glass of red wine. “At the end of each act we are going to stop and ask the audience to guess who the murderer is, Odette says, explaining the format of the dinner to be held August 21 at the Lake Monocan Building. Guests will feast on an Italian dinner from Vito’s and D’Ambola’s Restaurant, paired with wine from Cardinal Point. Audience members then vote for the murderer by depositing raffle tickets in certain baskets. The winner gets a prize and proceeds benefit the Nelson Food Pantry based in Lovingston. To arrange a prize or monetary donation, Odette says you can call her at 434-361-1887. If you get voicemail, leave a message. She may be busy disposing of Pepi Roni’s body. That is, if she’s the killer. NCL

losing face We iron out the wrinkles in the mystery behind Nelly May’s missing face. PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

‘Utterly shocking’

is how several Nelson Farmers’ Market goers described the sudden disappearance of Nelly May’s face in July. No, we are told, her face was not stolen nor was it vandalized. A source close to the investigation tells us Nelly May was due for a

face lift.

“She was rusting pretty badly and her ear was rotted,” says the source. “She is now all back together and looks wonderful.” A few more of these sessions and we might just see Nelly May in the next Geico commercial. NCL

fighting fires

up high PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

After a year-long wait, Wintergreen Fire Department took delivery of the newest and only ladder truck in Nelson County. ”This allows us to get a downward spray on the fire and fight it where it is,” says Wintergreen Fire Chief, Curtis Sheets. The truck’s bucket extends nearly 100 feet up into the air (are you queasy yet?) and came with a $750,007.10 price tag. “We didn’t have any aerial trucks before this one, Curtis says. “The last time, we had to get Augusta County to come over [and it took] an hour and 18 minutes to get here.” WFD members who will man the truck have already put in more than 100 hours of training prior to a 3-day instructional session with engineers from Sutphen, the company who manufactured the truck. In preparation of the grand opening of Oakland – Nelson County Museum of History, a group of rising 7th graders at Nelson Middle School are studying the ways in which children entertained themselves before electricity came to the county. “These kids are doing a summer school project to research the games that people played before electricity,” says Oakland volunteer, Katharine Townsend. “ The games will be presented at the opening.”

Using a stick to toss and to catch, Victoria Gormes and Kristina Ryan hurl a rope ring at each other. The activity was once considered a “girls’ game” as females were discouraged from playing stick ball, a “boy’s game”.

One game, played amongst girls, involves one player tossing a ring while the other catches it with a stick. Another game, which derived from the American Indians, involves a player throwing a dart through a hoop, so as to mimic the shooting of an arrow. Students also learned that the modern day battery-operated whirligig has its roots in colonial times and was then fashioned out of a leather string and a wooden button.

Oakland’s first exhibit, “Cuttin’ on the Lights,” takes place at Oakland Sunday, August 17, from 3pm to 5pm. For more information, call 434-263-8400.

Deloris Goska is one of several Nelson County seniors spending Nelly May Bucks at the Nelson Farmers’ Market. “I looked in my cookbook to find recipes that I could buy stuff for,” she says. “I found one for a yellow squash casserole and a zucchini pancake.” “We intend to do this on an annual basis,” says Nelson Farmers’ Market Co-op president Donna Kincaid. “We have chosen the four senior centers from Nelson County and we have distributed Nelly May Bucks to them that they can spend here at the market on anything they want.” Nelson Farmers’ Market Board member Bill Schutte says the board had

considered a government program that would give seniors $40 to spend at the market. “We looked into it but it had a whole list of restrictions like they can’t buy a pumpkin, they can’t buy a jar of jelly, they can’t have honey, and a whole lot of things.” So, using profits from the market, Bill says, seemed a simpler way to go. Needless to say, Deloris is enjoying her Nelly May bucks. “I may get some baked goods, don’t need any tomatoes because I have those at home. These tickets are good until October so if I don’t spend them no, I can come back!” NCL

Brewmaster Jason Oliver recently moved to Nelson County to help launch brewery start-up, Devils Backbone. Shawn Goodwin of Beech Grove joins the team as the Brewery’s chef (below). Located at the Village at Glen Mary, the Brewery is scheduled to open its doors later this year (far right).

developing backbone Tanks? Check. Chef? Check. Brewmaster? Check. STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD While Nelson County isn’t short on places that make alcohol on a daily basis, a new micro brewery is always welcome. Steve Crandall of Tectonics II is the creator of the Devils Backbone Brewery and he plans to open late this year in Beech Grove along with the brewery’s complete restaurant. Even though he’s at the building site four or five times daily and erects buildings for a living, Crandall is amazed by this project. “Yea, there are a lot of a details that have to be dealt with here and I’m the only guy that can do it. But I’m awestruck,” he said, looking at the soon-tobe brewery. “The building is tall, it’s grand and it’s unique. So yea, I’m enjoying it.” Chef Shawn Goodwin is still keeping much of his menu in the dark, but he’s excited, too. What he looks forward to most is using some of the resources and produce that Nelson has. He plans to get cheese, meats and vegetables from some of the farms local to his restaurant. “As much as we can do with the community,” said Goodwin. “Fruits and vegetables… the farms, the meats, the chicken. Free range, we’re going to try to utilize as much of that as possible. It’s going to be refreshing.” Goodwin has lived in Southwest Virginia for about seven years now but hails from New Mexico (most recently) and hopes to bring a little Southwestern flare to the kitchen in Beech Grove, but he also plans to vary the menu from month to month. He’s still pretty hush-hush about the menu, but his kitchen is a completely different story. They’re still at the very beginning, but Goodwin says he’s building most of the $70,000-plus kitchen around a char-broiler and a sauté area. The kitchen should be done sometime next month and then it’s time for a sampling. MMM-mmm. But what’s a micro brewery without beer? Jason Oliver, the Devils Backbone’s head brewer didn’t exactly start out in the beer world – he has

36 NELSON COUNTY LIFE AUGUST 2008

a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and History. It wasn’t until after college that he opened up a book of unique careers, saw the word “Brewmaster” and saw his life before his him. He went back to school to learn more about his beloved beer and eventually, in 1998, was one of 24 people to pass a nine-hour internationally-recognized brewing examination that’s given once each year. Since then, he’s spent most of his time brewing in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. He most recently joins us here in Nelson from Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant where he was a regional brewery supervisor. And the beer you’ve been waiting for? Don’t worry, there will be plenty of it. There will be four year-round beers on tap in addition to two additional categories, one or two seasonal brews and two to three guest beers from other Virginia breweries. There will always be a Bavarian gold lager, an amber Vienna-style beer, a Bavarian hefeweizen and an American IPA. There will always at least be one dark beer, any kind, and at least one Belgian beer. Jason hopes to offer guest brews from area breweries and move on from there. Got your drinking songs ready? NCL

wintergreen winery’s

e x p a n s i o n STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

With a view that can’t be beat, no wonder people want to get married at Wintergreen Winery. Soon, they’ll be able to. And co-proprietor, husband and winemaker extraordinaire Jeff Stone hopes that he’ll be able to start taking bookings next spring – barring any disasters. “We just started framing this morning and we’re on a pretty aggressive framing schedule. And my framer is taking a week’s vacation in the middle there,” he laughed, “so we don’t have a lot of wiggle room in terms of any foul weather or anything like that.” While there may not be much flexibility on getting the work done, the extra room will definitely give

more options in the events they can hold. Stone and the winery have never been able to have catered events, for one. And they already have a couple interested in booking a wedding next summer. “Primarily what we’re looking for is the ability to do more wine and food related things right here at the winery,” he explained. The 10-year-old winery hosts a popular wine and cheese pairing event twice each winter and they’ve had to cut off attendees at 40, even though more would come if there was room. “We know we can reserve 75 to 100,” said Stone. “This facility will definitely accommodate that.” He’ll use the new the new addition to the oper-

ation’s 240-year-old building for other things, too. When it rains on a music event, for example. Or perhaps an indoor wine festival held during ski season. And, of course, weddings. The new part of the building will accommodate a variety of events with a 3,200-square-foot indoor portion, including bathrooms and a small warming kitchen, and 1,300-square-feet of outdoor seating. Stone plans for the outdoor area to be done just in time for the winery’s “Romp, Stomp and Chomp” festival held Labor Day weekend. “That’s aggressive,” he admitted. “But with any luck we’ll be able to debut at least some of the facility then.” NCL

Jeff Stone of Wintergreen Winery oversees construction of the Winery’s new event space. The outdoor portion of the facility is scheduled to be completed by Labor Day.

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

Where Maples Dare Few specimen plants are as valuable as the dwarf Japanese Maple in their appropriate setting in today’s landscape. Although some designers and homeowners alike will move this specimen to just about any location in their yard, I tend to gravitate toward raised beds, planters and other elevated areas for this species since they have a prostrate habit and very dissected, ‘checkme-out’ leaves that are best viewed from close up. The catch is that your typical Japanese maple has a USDA Hardiness of just around 6 (sorry mountainous Wintergreen people). A nice alternative to the Japanese Maple with a similar effect is Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’. This plant has a rating of Zone 4 – yeah that basically means it can live in Montana. ‘Black Lace’ blooms and grows much faster than a Japanese Maple, responds well to pruning and yep, will actually live in a VERY cold environment. What do you say we meet your next addition to your landscape? Elderberry (as it is commonly called) is a shrub that grows about 6-8 feet tall with equal width. Even with that size, I always try to place Black Lace in an area where the deeply dissected foliage can be viewed up close in the landscape – preferably with at least 6-8 hours of

sun per day so that it will maintain its deep blood-red/almost black foliage. If exposed to less sun, the leaves will turn a lighter shade of black – kind of a green-black. Obviously one must always remember that, unlike Japanese maples, Elderberry can be pruned, nipped or even whacked, so trying to get this plant to fit in a specific spot that may be short on real estate can easily be done. On a side note, it worked very well this spring at our nursery in large container gardens. One of the neatest features of Black Lace is the fact that, unlike Japanese maples, this species blooms. Large, 6-inch clusters of cotton-candy pink blooms adorn this shrub in early summer. After the blooms fade, you ‘birders’ will be excited to know that the resulting blackish-red fruit will be at the top of the menu for your feathered friends as autumn approaches. While there is no great contrast from the berry to the foliage, the fruit is never-the-less attractive and adds to Black Lace’s multi-seasonal landscape appeal. One thing that I have never seen done with Japanese maples is a planting ‘en masse’. Perhaps on an elevated wall near a water feature or something of that nature you may see a few planted together but for the most part, it is a specimen type of shrub that likes

to stand on its own. Sambucus is different. This species is quite attractive planted in large groups of 3, 5 or even 7 plants. The key, however, is to always mix them with other species that both complement and contrast the dark foliage. Mixtures of pinks, reds (sparingly) and yellows really help to pull out all hints of color in its foliage. Also bold leaves such as those of a Canna lily contrast nicely with the fine, deeply dissected leaves of the Elderberry. In my landscape, my favorite Canna, Tropicana, which is a mixture of pinks, yellow, oranges and whites, matches up

well with Black Lace. If you like to share plants with your neighbors, Black Lace propagates very nicely from a softwood cutting during the months of June and July. The procedure is simple - just cut the top 4 inches of a shoot off, strip the bottom foliage, apply a rooting hormone found at your local garden center and place in some bedding plant mix (also found at your local garden center). Now just keep the leaves fairly moist and the roots will appear in no time. Until our next article, happy gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine

Dear Dr. Steve, Why should I have a physical? Two months ago I wrote about the importance of preventative maintenance for the body. Like keeping your car tuned up, keeping the body well tuned allows it to “run” smoother and for longer. For adults, that is what it a physical is all about. For children, however, it is slightly different. Imagine if you could observe the assembly line while your car was being built. You could watch for all of the bolts to be tightened just right, and maybe even suggest a little more undercoating on a place that might tend to rust. Children are in a way “being assembled,“ both mentally and physically, all through their growing years. At a well child check, or child’s physical, we get the chance to observe that development. We can do things that we hope will help them grow healthily and keep a close eye on any problems that show up early. In the first months and years, well child checks are largely about physical growth, getting the recommended immunizations, and helping

parents trouble shoot problems. As a kid gets older, we still watch growth and look for illness, but we can also work on reinforcing healthy eating habits, avoiding substance abuse, encouraging physical activity and exercise, making sure language is developing, reinforcing the importance of school and thinking, and promoting the idea that one’s own health is important and something to be active with. Parents, I know it is a scary thought, but often teenagers have told me things they won’t tell their folks. Sometimes this puts me in a very privileged position to try and promote healthy behavior. At a well child check a child, parent, and doctor get to sit down and work together on raising a healthy person. What better preventative maintenance could their be?! Keeping the Balance Our daily lives take a lot of turns and twists. Hectic work schedules. Child care: camps, play time, reading time, and crafts. Maintaining the house (laundry, dishes, paying bills, cleaning) and yard (cutting grass, weeding, mulching, planting, pruning). Errands, grocery shopping, car maintenance, dentist visits, medical visits and more. The list goes on and on. And, then there is someone always writing or reminding you to fit exercise into your schedule. The nerve of that person! Without a doubt – it is a challenge to add exercise in the mix. Personally, this summer, I have changed my exercise schedule to rise at 5:15am, take care of the pets, and then head out to exercise. It is hard especially since it is darker in the morning. Am I successful every morning? Not a chance. Is each workout the best in my life? Not a chance. I give myself a pat on the back for just doing something. And I am getting better. We are bombarded with so much in our lives, it is important to find a balance. It is important to take time for

you so you are the best that you can be for your family and friends. Many times we are so busy taking care of everything else that we forget to take care of ourselves. Several years ago, I was drawn to yoga because it encompassed so much besides just exercise: it offered breathing techniques, meditation, relaxation and a quiet insight to one’s own spirituality. Not only did it help with stress but it helped me keep the craziness of life in perspective. It helped keep the balance in my life when I felt things were getting unmanageable. And, I felt myself getting stronger with less aches and pains. One of the most wonderful things about yoga is that it is something you can do for a lifetime. And it is never too late to start. remembering Camille STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

Thirty-nine years after the most devastating day in Nelson County history, a second marker has been erected in memory of the victims of Hurricane Camille. The first maker, one located at the Courthouse opposite a Confederate memorial, was put up in 1971, just two years after the hurricane. “One of [the monuments] represents probably Virginia’s worst natural disaster,” said Cliff Wood, a man who vividly remembers the minutes of that day and the days following the flood. “And the Confederate monument represents probably our worst man-made disaster. And then in the middle of it is the American flag.” One reason why Hurricane Camille did so much damage, is that it was so unexpected. Wood lived along the James River. He went to bed, unconcerned, during a thunder storm. He woke up to a flood worse than any he could remember. In the hours and days following, he cleaned debris, scouted for damage and as a member of the County Board of Supervisors, took a lot of responsibility for himself. After the initial people he helped to safety with a small boat, he and the men he was working with had hoped to discover more people who were in need. “We were thinking in terms of rescue,” he remembered quietly. “It didn’t turn out to be that way, it was all body recovery.” Dozens of people in Nelson County died as a direct

result of Hurricane Camille. The second memorial marker, recently put up at the Rockfish River bridge at Elk Hill, is in specific memory of Ed Ewing and his wife – the only two lives that were lost on that side of Horseshoe Mountain. “On the night of August 19, he and his wife went to bed and the flood hit in the middle of the night and took their house away,” said Peter Agelasto III, owner of Elk Hill and the man behind the move to erect the marker. “Took them away and they perished.” With a second monument, Agelasto hopes to use the bitter memories of the disastrous flood to teach others. “We are trying to raise awareness and create an education level,” he explained. “It’s a very short marker, about 100 words, and it summarizes the horror and the tragedy of Hurricane Camille.” Wood, too, thinks the road marker installed by the Department of Transportation is a positive commemoration. “It’s our duty [to remember],” he began. “Twenty years down the road, no one’s going to do it. We would have maybe forgotten about it.” While there are books that have forever etched Camille’s history, Wood believes they are infrequently read. A monument, however, even a small one, is something he thinks people will see every day. “If you have a marker on the road, and people look for these Virginia markers – they’re popular, they’re well-done and they have significance,” he continued. “When you see one, it usually means something.” NCL

Cliff Wood and Peter Agelasto discuss Hurricane Camille’s devastating effect on the area in 1969 (above). A marker at the Rockfish River bridge near Elk Hill has been erected to memorialize the event (top).

What fuel cuts green house gas emissions on roads, at home, and on farms?

Propane. It works. It’s here. It’s now. Choosing propane can help save energy, reduce emissions and protect the environment. Across a wide range of uses — from fleet vehicles to home heating — propane produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional energy sources such as gasoline or electricity. And propane gets the job done: it’s reliable, readily available, and best of all, it comes with an existing and affordable refueling infrastructure. In the quest for clean alternative energy, America can look to propane. Now.
