from thepublishers’cat I’ve had a very good life as a cat. All nine of them, in fact. I was probably pushing life #6 when this picture was taken. Mom and dad were in a mad rush to renovate the upstairs bathroom so that mom – pregnant with Adam at the time – wouldn’t have to navigate the stairs in the middle of the night. If my head was larger than a double gang outlet, I would have been in trouble. Never quite the homebody, there was the time I met a bob cat at the bottom of the hill near the creek. I came back home to lick my bloody wound and mom and dad showered me with love and attention. While at home, I would catch mice and the white ones attached to mom and dad’s keyboards were no exception. It annoyed them but I knew they still loved me. When both Adam and Peyton were born, I would snooze with them in a drawer below the crib. Cat naps with babies are delightful! And then one morning, mom and dad noticed that the food they had set out for me below the hummingbird feeder hadn’t been touched. I had done this once before and came back a day or so later. But this time, I left the Staffords the same way as I first arrived: a surprise.

I had shown up unannounced just days before mom and dad’s beloved Millington died. As daddy sat in the shed crying for his beloved beagle, I hopped up on his lap to lick his tears. That’s when I became a keeper. My name was Angel until they discovered I had a boy body part, and added the “o.” Then I got a handsome leather collar with my name on it, just like Jerky and Nick. There was always speculation in the Stafford household that Millington came back as a cat. I never challenged that assumption. Think of it this way. Last year, only one hummingbird would come to feed. But recently, another showed up. I’m the handsome one with the red collar. And we don’t eat cat food. Enjoy! Angelo the hummingbird

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com To thine own wine be true, Domaine de la Mordorée Ne te quaesiveris extra, wrote Emerson in his essay Self Reliance. “Do not seek thyself outside thyself.” Or more simply, “Look within.” Above the temple of Apollo in Delphi are inscribed the words, Gnothi Seauton or “Know thyself.” After we know ourselves, we can begin trusting: “trust thyself.” And once we trust, we can be true to ourselves. “To thine own self be true,” as Polonius speaks in Hamlet, and these are simple yet prescient words, for how many of us could not stand to heed their advice, eschewing what others may think of us, trusting our intuitions and following the beat of our own drums? Or hearts. The same holds true for wine. To thine own wine be true! In this case those producers, growing in numbers around the globe, who disregard current trends (high alcohol, microoxygenation) or easy to grow international grapes (Chardonnay) and opt instead for wines and indigenous varietals that, while perhaps not as easy to appreciate as the approachable, Parker-influenced fruit bombs,

reflect the terroir of their particular regions and micro/mesoclimates. Domaine de la Mordorée is one such producer who continues to be true to its own self and the resulting wines, markedly different from vintage to vintage, exhibit this with outstanding quality year after year. Brothers Fabrice and Christophe run the winery, listed in Parker’s World’s Greatest Wine Estates. Christophe uses all sustainable methods in the vineyard and is leaning towards biodynamy. The ‘mordorée,’ or woodcock, whose migratory route goes directly over the estate, is a particular passion of theirs. The woodcock (also called bécasse on restaurant menus) adorns each bottle’s label and motifs are everywhere: paintings, prints, wooden woodcocks, ceramic woodcocks…. And a quick visit to the bathroom had me rather startled when I closed the door and sat down only to find a taxidermy stuffed woodcock staring me back in the eye. Speaking of Mordorée’s Tavel, which Basic Necessities sold out of in less than a week, Fabrice said to us in his deliciously accented English, “Bob [Parker] calls eet zee best rosé

in the world. But I disagree. Eet eeze za best rosé in ze universe!” Vying for best red wine in ‘zee universe’ is: Mordorée, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2009, La Reine des Bois, (which means ‘queen of the woods,’ yet another reference to our friend the woodcock.) – If you love a good, dark stout, and this is to wine what that is to beer. Rich & velvety with layers of licorice, coffee, blueberries and blackberries. I like that this blend of mostly Grenache also includes a touch of Vaccarese and Counoise, two CDP grapes infrequently seen. An elegant, complex wine to drink now, yet hold for 5 -25 years, and you might just say, ‘sublime.’ 93-96 pts, Robert Parker. National retail: $75-$95. Sotheby’s: $83.95. Basic’s special: $45. Mordorée, Lirac, 2009, La Dame Rousse- (‘the red lady,’ yet another reference to guess who?) – Raspberry and black-currant aromas, laced with lavender and anise. Could pass for a Châteauneuf at twice the price. WS, 90 pts. National retail: $23.95. Basic’s special: $19. Relax in Italy! Join Kay tasting wine across that most sensual of all countries. Glenn Clayton, Sr., of Hungry Hill Farm in Shipman, got his first bees back in the late 1960s. A friend who kept bees had been stung once too often and developed an allergy. “So who got ‘em?” Glenn Sr. asked. “Me. I take up any stray animal.”

He moved down to Virginia full-time in 1983 and brought his bees with him from New Jersey. And now he’s got somewhere between 150 and 175 colonies. “That’s since ’83,” he said. “Today is 2011. It’s been a long time.” Back in New Jersey, Glenn Sr. was a full-time firefighter for the Department of Defense and the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. And after a long shift, there was nothing he liked better than to come home to his family – and his bees. “If you ever start keeping bees, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about,” said Glenn Sr. And for those that want to follow in his footsteps – as much as his family has now done – Glenn Sr. has some recommendations: “Get a hold of a local beekeeper and see what he does and how he does it. Take a couple of classes. Get a couple beekeeping journals or books. So many stories have been written about honey bees. If you ever start keeping bees, you’ll find out how interesting they are,” he said. “And every time you open a hive, you find something different. It’s challenging.” Glenn Sr.’s son, Glenn Clayton, Jr., is one of the many Clayton family members to work in the bee business – though he didn’t get into it until the mid-1990s. In fact, he doesn’t actually remember his dad keeping bees around the house while he was growing up in New Jersey.

JUNE 2011 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 13

And Glenn Jr. agrees with his dad: “You just gotta pay attention to a mentor,” he said. “The only way I learned was through my dad.” But like his dad, beekeeping is now a great hobby for Glenn Jr. “Just watching the bees get to work. Getting into the hives and seeing how they structure everything,” said Glenn Jr., explaining why beekeeping is so interesting to him. “And teaching other people to do it – I enjoy it.” And these days, Glenn Jr.’s got himself a couple of his very own mentees: his daughter, Katie Clayton, and her boyfriend, Colin Johnson, just to name a few. Colin, who runs the farm’s website and Facebook page and also sells honey every Saturday at the Charlottesville City Market, took up beekeeping as a hobby, too. Though he works by day as a spatial analyst, he’s loved learning about the bees. “I’m a big gatherer of facts and trivia,” said Colin. “And every time I go out, I’m learning something new; I’m constantly feeding that hunger for knowledge.” Over the years, the bees’ honey has become increasingly more in-demand and the Claytons sell all over the area – at five markets, to be exact. “I do Lynchburg Farmer’s Market,” said Glenn Jr. “My wife does the Nellysford market. My daughter or my son do the Staunton market and Colin does the Charlottesville market.” Today, thanks in large part to Colin’s digital efforts, Hungry Hill is selling honey via the internet all over the world. And these days, Glenn Jr. is only getting stung 6 or 7 times a day. An improvement, really, from the 20 stings in 15 seconds that Colin reports from a recent batch of the black and yellow buzzers. [ improve living space ]

You NEED Window Tinting and This is Why Window Tinting will improve the living space and daily life in your home dramatically The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. I can make your views more vivid and drastically reduce the heat from the sun. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

a step forward STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS

Phyllis Reed truly believes that the difficult experiences of our lives are our greatest teachers. “But at those times,” she explained, “it is sometimes hard to take that one small step toward hope.” So, like several other Nelsonians of late, Phyllis wrote a book (Small Steps Huge Changes: The Extraordinary Moments of an Ordinary Life) to share her experiences with friends, family, neighbors, and anyone who might be going through those difficult experiences. “The intention behind the book was not really to sell a bunch of books,” said Phyllis. “The intention was to leave something behind for my family and my friends and it was really cathartic, too. There was a time in my life when I wrote only for me, but now I’m willing to share not only the joyful experiences of my life, but the difficult ones, too. Tremendous changes can take place when one person shares with another.” A combination of essays, poetry, and memories of growing up and coming to Stoney Creek, Small Steps Huge Changes was published in late March and is for sale directly through Phyllis’ website (www.reedrenderings.com) as well as several local bookstores (including Quest Bookshop in Charlottesville) and all of the large online booksellers. No one can drive past the Colleen Drive-in without noticing the giant ice-cream cone that marks the spot of a timeless favorite. Many people find it hard to actually pass by the Drive-in at all. That appetizing advertisement was patented in 1957 by Clarence S. Shank who shipped the prefabricated design to numerous states throughout the country as a chain called, “The Dairy Isle”. Luckily for us, the Colleen Drive-in on US 29 just south of Lovingston is the only one of these ‘Ice-cream Islands’ in the state of Virginia. The second and current owner, Nancy Saunders said, “I was about sixteen or seventeen years old when it was built. The ice-cream cone just came on the building!” On the day of its opening in 1964, local celebrity, Strawberry Goodwin of The Blue Ridge Pig, can remember the Drive-in giving away free mini ice-cream cone samples of their soft-serve. This small serving made a big impression, turning him into such an enthusiast, he decided to work

20 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JULY 2011

there when he was sixteen. “That’s where everybody met for the social events of the evening. ‘Meet you at the Dairy Isle’ is what we’d always say. It was a focal point in those days,” Straw explained. “People from everywhere came and met there. You meet your girlfriend there and go on about your business, it was real fun”. The ice-cream business wasn’t just dropped into Nancy’ lap; it was gracefully handed over with a napkin. “My husband bought it in the mid-eighties, but I wasn’t scared to take it over from Ed. B Saunders – they called him Ned – because I had already been working for him since ’65 doing bookkeeping,” Saunders said. The ladies that work at the Drivein don’t let the hard work stop them from indulging in their favorites on their breaks. Lizzie Hite, who has been working there for the past fourteen years, likes the chocolate soft-serve, “especially when it’s all fudgy.” Who wouldn’t? Megan Thompson has spent the last

year working and eating hot fudge sundaes with peanuts on top, while Evelyn Beverley, who’s been at the Drive-in for two years, still loves the classic banana split. “This place has been a hangout for teens for years. It was where everybody gathered Friday and Saturday nights,” Nancy told me. “They would have the dances down at Lake Nelson and then they would come on to the Dairy Isle ‘til it closed”. This classic Drive-in has always been part of the dating scene for locals who come to enjoy the kick-back to the ‘50s lifestyle, back when time didn’t move as fast and buying your girl a “Black Cow” (vanilla ice-cream and Coca-Cola) or a root-beer float was considered a typical first date. Bringing in crowds of couples that can barely be contained by their wrap-around parking lot, many sweet words and many a ring is sure to have been placed on a girl’s finger here over the years. This July for example, is the anniversary of when Faber-based plumber Jeff

Goff proposed to his wife, Kimberly Taylor in 1983. “There’s just so much to remember. We had a lot of good times here,” said Nancy. A “hot-spot” since its opening, the Drive-in has melted itself into many of our memories forever. Whether it be from finding sweet relief in the soft-serve, which is served out of the original soft-serve machine, after school and soccer practice, sharing a milk shake with your special someone on a fun night out, or indulging in the Chicken Finger Box for lunch twice a week (Guilty), Nelson County would be hard-pressed to find a group of people who aren’t fans of this classic Drive-in. While the surrounding cities and towns provide faster or more up-to-date restaurants, the Colleen Drive-in stands strong against the modern encroachment. Customers continue to choose this classic restaurant and show their support by making the Colleen Drive-in a main course their lives, right next to a big Sunday supper. NCL

As a child, when I heard my mother use this phrase I always thought she meant starting a task and sticking with it until it was finished. But now that I am in the hay making business, the old adage has new meaning. Early in May, every farmer in Nelson County begins listening to the long range weather forecast with decidedly uncommon interest. What they are hoping for is an optimum five day rain-free stretch of time so they can cut, fluff, rake and bale the hayfields that have been growing and are now ready for harvest. Only when the last bale on the wagon is brought into the barn and stacked in the hay maw is there a sigh of relief. Baling hay is an iffy business at best. Seems to me weather patterns have become very fickle in recent years. When the forecaster says no rain Monday through Friday the tractors roll out to start cutting Monday morning as soon as the dew lifts. By Tuesday afternoon dark clouds start moving in, threatening to drench the fresh mown hay. What happened to that five day dry stretch the meteorologist promised? Gone, and in its place a new forecast; showers the rest of the week. It’s enough to make a John Deere man cry. My husband Billy, who has been farming most of his life, says rain doesn’t hurt the mown hay the first day but ruins it when it’s fully cured and ready to come up. It’s a yearly gamble for the folks counting on having a winter’s feed for their stock safely stored inside the barn at the end of the season. Personally, we tend to err on this side of cautious and cut our hayfields in smaller increments rather than lose the whole batch to bad weather. It takes longer but we breathe easier knowing if we do lose some, at least we have another shot and all is not lost. Modern technology is a marvel

and even on the farm we can chart the progress of time-saving equipment over the years. From putting up hay loose, to square bales and now the large round bales, farmers have evolved in the way they harvest their hay crops. In the early years our family didn’t have enough land to warrant buying a lot of expensive equipment so the hay was put up the old-fashioned way. Billy said he and his father hand- cut the ten acre pasture with mowing scythes. When the grass dried for a few days they began the laborious job of gathering it up with pitchforks. The hay was then piled up on a haystack, sometimes reaching twelve feet high. The day they bought the old Farmall A tractor, sickle-bar and dump rake, the Coffey family thought they’d arrived! I don’t know how many times people stopped to take photographs of us riding the hay rake and pitching up loose hay on the wagon. About four or five years ago we broke bad and purchased an old baler that kicked the square bales onto the wagon behind, making the job of stacking much easier. Then came the fluffer, which cut a day off our curing time. We figure we are now somewhere in the twentieth century with our equipment, which is certainly not very modern, but works for us. The smell of newly baled hay in the barn is heavenly; the freshness of earth’s sweet harvest packed full of nutrition for our horses. It’s a lot of hard work yet each trip to the barn produces a satisfaction that cannot be matched. It makes for a thankful heart to God for His provision and gives a sense of personal accomplishment for one’s labors. When the last field is baled and in, Billy and I heave a sigh of relief, plop down in the rockers on the back porch and have us a “farmer’s cocktail”... two Advil and a glass of sweet tea! NCL

Do you know about the Livable Home Tax Credit?

for making one or more of the following improvements: • Provide a zero-step entryway or route from the driveway or sidewalk • Provide doors or hallways with minimum clearance standards • Install accessible light switches, outlets and thermostats • Provide accessible bath facilities (may be a half-bath) • Provide accessible and usable kitchen facilities The credit must be claimed on a form that is submitted to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) no later than February 28th of the year following the year of the improvements. The application is a simple form that just requires the taxpayer’s name and contact information. Documentation of the improvements such as invoices, pictures and canceled checks must be attached to the application. It is not necessary that the accessibility features are immediately needed for the taxpayer or members of the household. If you are making home improvements or building a new home and these features are included, you still qualify for the

Virginia Tax Benefits for Accessibility Improvements Your spouse or family member is recovering from an accident or serious illness and now you hope to make the transition from hospital to home. Among the many concerns that you have at this time is making the home easier to navigate by providing various accessibility improvements. Some costs, such as wheelchairs and walkers, are covered by your insurance. However, these devices may be useless unless you make modifications to bathrooms, doorways and entryways. A little known benefit has been available in Virginia for several years and has recently been expanded. The state provides financial relief in the form of tax credits for accessibility improvements under the Livable Home Tax Credit program. Tax credits offset Virginia tax liabilities on a dollar for dollar basis. Unused credits may be carried forward for up to five years. Homeowners that make modifications to a new or existing home may receive up to $5,000 in credit dollars

credit. DHCD will notify each applicant no later than April 1st of the amount awarded and will provide them with a form to attach to their state tax return. Although there is an annual limit of credits ($1 million), only $113,346 was awarded for 2010. DHCD’s website at www.dhcd. virginia.gov/lhtc is full of helpful information. You’ll want to review the detailed information with your contractor prior to making the improvements to make sure they meet the required standards. Contractors take note: you can provide an added value to your clients by being informed of the particulars of this program. You can download printable brochures and application forms from the DHCD website to share with your clients. We have a growing population of older and disabled citizens in Virginia that are often unable to visit friends and family due to accessibility issues. Consider providing at least one accessible bath and entryway when making your next home improvement and add “visitability” to the list of your home’s features.

You may qualify for up to $5,000 in tax credit dollars!

Identifying with home buyers and sellers

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Long gone are the days in which you could stick a “for sale” sign in a yard and expect something to happen. In today’s real estate climate in which purchasers have many options, yet less available funds, and sellers are confronted with stiff competition and escalating days on market, having a carefully crafted plan of execution for buying and selling is essential. Statistical findings from the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers may help market participants better understand one another and develop more customer centric approaches to buying and selling. Here are the most recent report highlights: Characteristics of Home Buyers; 50% of home buyers were first-time buyers; the typical first-time home buyer was 30 years old, while the typical repeat buyer was 49 years old; the median household income of buyers was $72,200; 20% of buyers

were single females and 12% were single males. Characteristics of Homes Purchased; the typical home purchased was 1,780 sq ft, was built in 1990, and had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; 77% of home buyers purchased a detached single-family home; New home purchases were at the lowest level in 9 years – down to 15% of all home purchases; 4% of buyers purchased a foreclosure and 6% purchased a short sale. The Home Search Process; Nearly one-third of recent buyers reported that their first step in the home buying process was looking for homes online; 9 of 10 buyers used the internet to search for homes; the typical home buyer searched for 12 weeks and viewed 12 homes; real estate agents were viewed as a very useful information source by 81% of buyers searching for a home. Home Buying and Real Estate Professionals; 83% of buyers

purchased their home through a real estate agent or broker; 48% of buyers found their agent through a referral from a friend or family member; 87% of buyers would recommend or use their agent again in the future. Financing the Home Purchase; 91% of home buyers financed their recent home purchase; Homes have been purchased with limited down payments: first time home buyers typically financed 96% of their home purchase, while repeat buyers financed 86% of their purchase. Home Sellers and Their Selling Experience; The typical seller lived in their home for 8 years before selling; 88% of sellers were assisted by a real estate agent when selling their home; 57% of sellers reported that they reduced their asking price at least once and 44% offered incentives to attract a buyer; 86% of sellers were at least somewhat satisfied with their selling experience. Home Selling and Real Estate

Professionals; 91% of sellers reported that their home was listed or advertised on the Internet; 41% of sellers who used a real estate agent found their agents through a referral from friends or family and 23% used the same agent that they used to previously buy or sell a home; More than 8 of 10 sellers would definitely or probably use or refer their agent again. Whether buying or selling, understanding the market participants may pave the way to a more successful real estate venture! *Statistics have been pulled from the 2010 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. the lowesville picture show STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

Lowesville may not have a movie theater, but it has a few barns. A few years ago, resident David Woolridge put his old barn to use as an outdoor movie theater. He bought an LCD projector and started showing a movie once a month. “It started out the third Friday of every summer month and we did it when the sun set,” he said. And this is the sixth year the Woolridges have put on the shows for family and friends. When they started, their now-11-year-old was still in first grade and their youngest – who is now 3 – wasn’t even a glint in their eyes. Jenny Cumby, David’s wife, says it all started when their oldest son went from being a homeschooled kindergartner to a first grader in public school. “He wanted to have a movie party and they would watch the movie Madagascar,” she remembers. “I was just thinking that everyone would be sitting in the living room, but the next thing I knew, David said, ‘No! We’ll show it on the barn!’ And we never did show Madagascar on the barn, but it was really cool.” It’s a bit hard to remember these days, but David says he’s pretty sure the first movie they showed was The Iron Giant. This year they’re showing (or have showed already – they started April 16) Alice in Wonderland, Despicable Me, Matilda and maybe Beetle Juice. The Woolridges wanted to show the movies they grew up watching – like Ghost Busters – but it turns out some of those movies they so fondly remember aren’t appropriate for today’s elementary schoolers. “There were just a couple scenes in [Ghost Busters] that weren’t appropriate for the under-8 crowd,” he said. “And Beetle Juice drops the ‘F-Bomb’ so we may have to choose another one.” But no matter what they’re showing, everyone has a good time. “The adults can either watch the movie or they can congregate and talk – sometimes drink wine,” said Jenny. “It’s a good time for everyone to get together and do something that’s fun and free and local.” NCL

When the Italian restaurant on 151 in Afton closed down not too long ago, it left a small, D’Ambola’s-shaped hole in our Nelsonian hearts. But now The Blue Toad is here to fill that hole – with ice cream. And burgers, and hot dogs, and shepherd’s pie, and Guinness Stew. And beer. Oh, the beer. “What our concept is going to be is the United States of MicroBeer,” said Blue Toad owner Todd Rath, adding that they’ll definitely feature local brews and wines, too. “But to keep people interested, we’re going to do the United States of MicroBeers. As you finish each state, we’re going to keep track of you. And when you finish the tour, we’ll give you a T-shirt.” A T-shirt and all the bragging rights you feel entitled to. Now, the United States of MicroBeers is a ways away and part of Phase Two of the Blue Toad, but Phase One will be here pretty soon. Phase One includes a playground for the little ones (including Todd’s two kiddies, both under age 4), a game of cornhole, and plenty of running around room. Plus, the ice cream. continued on page 38

Todd Rath, owner of The Blue Toad in Afton, says the existing deck at what used to be D’ambola’s, will now extend and wrap around to the front of the building.

Described by his wife as a “serial entrepreneur,” the Blue Toad represents a turning point for Todd. He put himself through college at Purdue University diving for golf balls. After a stint at IBM, he left to found online discount golf store behemoth RockBottomGolf. com. After selling his shares of the company, he started a logistics consulting firm. The Blue Toad

combines Todd’s business skills with a personal desire for a establishing a kid-friendly hang-out close to home. Blue Toad will open this summer with a slide open window serving soft serve ice cream (one of the only places to get it in the county) plus burgers, Zweigle’s hot dogs (a shoutout to Todd’s upstate New York upbringing), fries and the like. Todd, who has been called “Toad”

since his early years (hence the name of the pub), gave a lot of credit to all that Nelson County offers already, but believes the Blue Toad will definitely fill a niche in a county ripe with over-21 attractions, but lacking in kid-friendly eateries. “So we’re trying to throw a family element out there on the outside.” And definitely fun for the grownups on the inside. asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, This heat is killing me. How can I handle it better? The Dog Days of summer are almost here. Anyone who has spent a summer in Virginia knows how oppressively hot and humid it gets outside. Thank goodness for air conditioning. I sometimes wish that I had a job that allows more time outside, but on these hot summer days I’m thankful to work indoors. Heat related illness is serious and a preventable cause of death. Older people, children and people with chronic medical and mental conditions are more prone to heat stress. People suffer from heat related illnesses when their bodies are unable to properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating but sometimes is unable to do this effectively, especially when the humidity is high. Heat stroke is an emergency. Symptoms include an extremely high body temperature, hot and dry skin (no sweating), rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, unconsciousness. If you witness this happening call for medical care, get the

person in the shade and attempt to cool them down by putting them in a cool bath, or spraying with a cool hose. The best protection from heat related illness is air conditioning. People without air conditioned homes should spend the hottest times in places such as shopping malls, or other air conditioned places. Some communities have cooling shelters on very hot days. Drink plenty of cool and non-alcoholic fluids - be proactive and drink before you feel thirsty. If you must be outside then use common sense. Dress in light clothes and hats. Do not leave children or pets in cars. Use sun screen to avoid burning. Try to limit your outside times to early in the morning or in the evening, and stay in the shade. If you must be out in the heat, be safe and be smart, and remember that only ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.’ Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Training with the TV Just so we are on the same page: training with the TV does not mean the couch potato seated in the lazy boy chair with a case of beer, a bag of chips, a bag of Doritos and some dip, hunkered down to watch sports on TV all day. Some folks might call that a triathlon of sorts. However, there is an assortment of exercise programs on TV: yoga, core body work, pilates, power workouts and cardio workouts depending on the flavor of the day. And, you can also purchase any variety of exercise DVDs or view programs on websites. As with any product, there are the good routines and the awful routines. How do you know what is worth your money (and time) and what is junk if you don’t have an adequate knowledge of exercise? The first quality is that it must be safe so you are not injured while exercising. Therefore, the instructor should have an expertise of exercise. This is hard to discern prior to purchasing a DVD or watching a TV show. I often review clients’ DVDs

or exercise videos for them and offer modifications to certain exercises so they can perform the program safely at their current level. I advise individuals to work with a professional prior to buying anything, so that you have some working knowledge of safe technique and parameters when exercising with a DVD. It is also important to know your limits. When I review exercise routines on TV, video or DVD, I look for proper instruction and technique and examine the skill of the instructor. Recently, I had the opportunity to complete some of the P90X programs on DVD. The instructor for the P90X programs offered a nice warm up, instructed you to monitor your heart rate, took adequate rest breaks and he demonstrated proper technique and offered modifications. In addition, the workouts were challenging and he was a motivating instructor. I enjoyed them so I would certainly do it on a regular basis. It is important to enjoy the DVD if you are going to be with it for sixty minutes. Aspects such as the instructor teaching style, his/her

voice and content are vital to exercise repeatedly with it. The TV shows and DVD are a good adjunct to your regular exercise program to offer variety, to do on a rainy or snowy day, or to take along on a trip so you don’t lose ground when vacationing or traveling for

work. Remember they are a guide for you as you exercise but ultimately, you must know your own body, practice good technique and know your limitations to avoid injury and recognize when an exercise is inappropriate for you. Afterwards, you can plop into your lazy boy recliner!
