from thepublishers So we’re still waiting for BPL: Baby over Power Line. Seriously, BPL – Broadband over Power Line – is apparently on hold as I type because the IBEC crews had to go to Texas for Hurricane Ike. They must be stretched pretty thin so let’s wish them luck. It looks like we’ll have to wait at least another month before we upload our issue to the printer from the comfort of home. But enough about the woes of uploading. Let’s talk about downloading. As you can see, the download has yet to begin, though it appears that things are progressing. Hold up three fingers – hint, hint. The official due date’s September 28 which means we should hopefully have a little baby boy in the next “From the Publishers” picture. But who knows? Maybe we’ll get Broadband before Baby. Any bets? The other night, when I should have been busy working on the magazine, I shut off the computer and put together one of the baby shower gifts, a Papasan Cradle Swing. Depending on the setting, the swing rocks back and forth and plays nature sounds like frogs and crickets. “I want one,” Tommy said as he came down the stairs to steal a peak of what one of my friends calls a neglectomatic. Ribbit, ribbit. Some of the best baby gifts run

without batteries. They are the handmade knitted blankets, sweaters and bonnets we have received from a group of ladies we refer to as the Aunt Colony. Too young to be grandmothers, and hesitant to call them old wives, we consider them to be aunts. And my, can they knit! Lest we forget, we’d like to apologize for the typo in George McKinney’s blurb last month about him getting an award for 58 continuous years of lying – we meant flying. As one reader noted, no wonder his FAA background check took forever. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com

Grower champagnes The term “grower champagne” means a champagne grown and produced by an individual grape grower. In the U.S. we’re used to the grandes marques, the big houses or conglomerates such as Moët & Chandon, Veuve Cliquot, Perrier Jouët and the like, words that have become brand names and which account for 97% of sales outside of Europe. But consider this: it’s the growers, in other words the farmers, who own 90% of Champagne’s vineyards, valued at around $1 million an acre. Sounds great, doesn’t it? It would be if the farmers could make enough wine to offset costs, but few of the 15,000 growers own more than five acres and many only a couple. Thus, they’re forced to sell to one of the coopératives or large houses who account for 80% of champagne’s production, yet own only 10% of champagne’s vineyards. (Moët & Chandon alone produces 2 million cases in annual production, 200,000 of which is Dom Pérignon.) Only about 4,000 of these smallholder farmers make their own wine, tending their small plots like gardens, with incredible care and attention so that they express the individuality of the wine.

The term for this—a term with which many people are now familiar—is terroir. This untranslatable French word has its root in terre which means earth, land, ground or soil and terroir refers to the confluence of weather, soil and environment that gives a vineyard an identifiable character. Therefore, the big houses, who buy grapes from all over the region of Champagne, sometimes from as many as a thousand different vineyard sites, cannot possibly have terroir except as a general sense of what the region of champagne is like. But to understand the difference between a Côte des Blancs—that wonderful region within Champagne, growing mostly Chardonnay grapes and producing lighter champagnes—and a cuvée made in the Montagne de Reims with more Pinot Noir than Chardonnay, one would need to buy a grower champagne. So how do you know if a champagne is “grower” or not? You look (or ask your wine rep to look) for the tiny little letters RM somewhere on the label which stand for recoltant manipulant or “harvester handled.” Think of estate-bottled wines. The same tiny letters on one of the grandes marques

will most likely read NM or négociant manipulant, and refer to the shipper not the grower. The big house champagnes can still provide pleasure, so if you just love Tattinger, Comptes des Champagnes, by all means spend the big bucks and drink and enjoy. But the grower champagnes often offer much better value for your dollar—a fact not unimportant for us U.S. citizens of the depreciating currency and budget deficit—and at the same time, will offer you a distinctive taste and sense of terroir. Good champagne is about taste, great taste in fact; it’s not about falling for marketing magic. Roland Champion, Grand Cru, Chouilly, Blanc des Blancs, Brut - This is a delicate and glorious Blanc des Blancs (all Chardonnay) with a yeasty nose and perfect balance. Of the 312 villages in Champagne, there are only seventeen Grand Cru villages, one of which is Chouilly. Perfect as an aperitif or accompanying light dishes. $59.99. If that sounds like a lot, consider that Dom Pérignon is $150-$175 and Crystal more still.) Kay Pfaltz is co-owner of Basic Necessities in Nellysford.

got And views? would you like to enjoy them? Is there any place in the world as beautiful as Nelson County in the fall? In my personal opinion, I would say there isn’t. And, come winter, Nelson’s winter wonderland is breathtaking. There is nothing better than enjoying each season, and all the spectacular splendor that Nelson has to offer right from the comfortable setting of your own home. Every time I am driving through Nelson County and see all of those gorgeous homes with their windows facing those amazing views, the blinds and curtains are all pulled. Why are these spectacular views being blocked out? Am I missing something? Should you not be soaking in the view from your Nelson dream home, enjoying the sense of openness and flow from the outdoors to the inside of your home? I have to believe that it is not the homeowners’ fault. With all of that sunlight pouring in it has to be very hot, and very bright, and not to mention the fading of the floors, furniture, and everything in between. What is a homeowner to do? Of course they want to enjoy their views, but they don’t want everything in their home destroyed by the sun, and that air conditioning just can’t keep up. Fortunately, there is a solution that can solve everyone’s problem: 3M Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting. Window film allows homeowners to still see out of their windows, and to keep out the damaging rays of the sun. Look at film like a water filter. If you put a water filter on your tap, you eliminate the harmful chemicals in

your water. Film will eliminate 99.9% of the UV rays, and can reduce the amount of glare by as much or as little as you like depending on the film you choose. What about all of that heat gain that comes through the windows? Film takes care of that as well. It used to be that darker films were more effective. Thanks to 3M, that is no longer the case. With its new Prestige line of window films, Clear View Window Tinting can now apply a clear film to windows that will reduce as much heat and fading as some of the darkest films out there. What about the film going bad, peeling, or changing colors? 3M has taken care of that with a residential lifetime warranty. If anything goes wrong with your window film, 3M and Clear View Window Tinting will replace it free of charge. 3M was rated the third most innovative company in the world last year by Money Magazine ( just behind Toyota, and Google ) for being a world leader in adhesives, and many other products. The 3M name is one to stand behind. So please get those views back that you fell in love with the first time you saw them. Having Clear View Window Tinting install 3M window film on the windows in your home will make you see Nelson County the way it was truly to be intended, and that is by you. To find out more about the amazing new films from 3M Corporation, call Darin Martin, Jr. with Clear View Window Films at 434-996-TINT (8468) or go to www.clearviewtint.com.

continued from page 12 “I started driving a tractor about 12 years ago” Bo proudly said from atop her recently purchased orange hydrostatic Kubota, complete with front end loader and bucket. “I had borrowed people’s tractors for years and years. You can wear out your welcome.” So Bo went on the hunt earlier this year. “I looked at one in Buckingham County and the price was right!” Of course, no tractor purchase would be complete without a party to honor its arrival. A few months ago Bo had hers. And in one word, she said it was “fabulous.” In other parts of the world or even other parts of the U.S., seeing a woman driving a tractor might be a little unusual, but in Nelson, it’s very usual. “Oh, no, no. I’ve never seen a woman that lives in Chile mowing the grass, using a trimmer or anything. I was glad to see it here,” said Nancy Hellerman of Goodwin Creek Farm & Bakery in Afton. The day we talked to her, she was all about green – John Deere green. But she’s usually a Kubota girl too. “The John Deere is a lot more fun,” she explained. Nancy was born and raised in South America and moved to the United States a few years ago. Before moving to Goodwin Creek, she had never even been on a lawn mower, much less a tractor. “It was fun, lots of fun,” Nancy laughs, remembering the first time she rode a tractor. As a kid, I too remember my first ride on a tractor. It was with my dad back in West Tennessee feeding the cows in the winter. The days before the big round bales.

Bo Holland of Screech Owl Farm was so thrilled about getting her Kubota, she threw a tractor party (above). When she’s not baking bread, Nancy Hellerman tends to the field at Goodwin Creek Farm on her John Deere (right). Yvonne Harris of amFOG uses her Mahindra to load anything from firewood, to mulch, to mums (opposite, top). Heidi Crandall of Hat Creek Farm tunes out the world on her Deere (opposite, right).

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2008

We would hook up an old wooden trailer, fill it with bales of hay from the barn and head off to the pasture. A Ford with gray fender wells, and two shifters for the gears.

Today, these women drive much nicer tractors, though all of theirs are still open cab like the Ford back on the farm. Yvonne Harris of a.m.FOG on the Nelson-Albemarle County line had her first tractor ride at age 11 on her grandmother and uncle’s farm in Cumberland County. “It was a green one, open cab,” was all she could recall. But she’s more certain of what she drives today. “It’s a Mahindra,” Yvonne said proudly. Gesundheit! Years and years passed from the time she rode a tractor as a young girl until Yvonne every got her new tractor at a.m.FOG. “It was almost like I didn’t know how to drive it, but I was also very pregnant,” Yvonne remembered. She said she even got it stuck up to the axles right off the back of the delivery truck. About 12 miles south, in Roseland, after driving a tractor for roughly 20 years at Hat Creek Farm, it’s second nature to Heidi Crandall. “I grew up in a family of 10 and though we didn’t live on a farm, we visited my grandparent’s farm,” she said from her John Deere pulling a bush hog to cut the pasture. “My dad

helped teach me how to work on cars, change the oil or a tire, so I was kind of industrial.” For Heidi, using a tractor is more than just a way to get work done. “It’s very therapeutic,” she explained. “You’re just on a different level and seeing everything from that tractor level gives you a different perspective.” But it’s not all fun and games for these women- some people aren’t as used to seeing members of the “fairer sex” working the farm. “Oh I get the weird looks, yea,” said Yvonne, back in Afton. “Especially when I’ve got a skirt on and I’m running the store and need to get a load of mulch. I walk out and hop on the tractor and they look at me like, ‘You’re loading the mulch?’” But none of these ladies find anything odd about driving tractors. They think they’re just as good, maybe better, than some of their male counterparts who do. “Why not? I don’t see why not,” said Nancy. “I don’t think there’s a guy out here in Nelson that would discredit a woman driving a tractor, especially if it’s a couple working on a farm,” Heidi says. “I can drive anything,” added Bo. It was peach picking and fiddling time at Saunders Brothers Farm Market where shoppers enjoyed classic fiddle tunes as they stocked up on fresh fruit from the orchard.

A sure sign summer is waning, the Montebello Community Market featured kettle tables and tables of antiques and crafts, not to mention kettle corn and the famous Montebello cobbler, which happened to be blueberry this year. The yearly event benefits Montebello Volunteer Fire & Rescue.

OCTOBER 2008 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 19

Dear Chuck,

Prison letters to former G-man published in new book STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD

When Chuck Brown joined the FBI a lifetime ago, he never thought he’d be where he is now: writing a book about the prisoners he counsels. “My job was working to put offenders behind bars,” he said, remembering what he did as a special employee. Now, as a prison minister, things are different. Back then, he didn’t even know prison ministry existed. “Over a period of time, as I got older and mellowed, I became active in my church and I became very active when I was introduced to prison ministry.” Three years ago, Brown, a faithful Catholic who ministers to people of all faiths, took his first step on the other side of the bars. At first he was worried that the men he became close to would feel threatened by a former FBI agent on the other side and within one year, he was delighted to be wrong. Instead, when the prisoners learned of his history, Brown said many of them respected him for it. “I thought my visiting time was over,” he said. “But most of the men really looked at [my experience with the FBI] as a positive thing, to see somebody who spent a number of years putting people behind bars come and visit them on the other side.” As he developed relationships with the men he counseled, Brown and the prisoners began exchanging letters to continue conversations started during their face-toface meetings. After years of writing and receiving more than 1,500 letters, Brown is compiling them into a book. Inside is the first book by the former agent and the men he speaks with in prisons were surprised he was writing, but not because Brown is unskilled. Actually, for just the opposite reason, they were surprised that he would choose to write about them.

Andy Burdetsky “They had knowledge of my skydiving adventures and my scuba diving adventures and they said, ‘Well you’re a pretty interesting guy, so why don’t you read a book about yourself?’” Brown recalled. “And I said, ‘No, it’s going to be about you and how you feel about what you’ve done that’s landed you in jail, I prison.’” And that is exactly what the book centers around. Brown says many of the men in contact with him most often feel truly sorry for the things that brought them to prison. On man in particular wrote a poem at the end of a letter called “Twenty Years is Not Enough.” Brown cannot read it without becoming emotional. “Twenty years is not enough, you say. What I have done is wrong. There is no forgiveness for me,” the poem reads. “I will know no peace, no joy or love. You want me to pay for my sins for the rest of my days. Well, I began the day I was born.”

While he acknowledges that some men who repent and receive rehabilitation during their prison stints are able to succeed later in life, especially those who discover a more faith-based way of living, but Brown says that when prisoners are sent out into the world, the majority of the men- who run the gamut in age, personality and profession- are not totally rehabilitated and society is not educated enough to recognize the ones that are. He, of course, does not believe that just anyone should be handed a second chance, especially without rehabilitationthere are some crimes, he says, that deserve punishment. But he believes that if just some of the money spent on rehabilitation and counseling, the American prison system could be much more successful. “And I see the dignity in each of these men,” he said. “I think what we need to do is to recognize that they are human beings and give them an opportunity.” NCL

Brisk temperatures, apple cider, college football. Ah, fall is finally here. But… where are those leaves? They’ll be here, don’t worry, said Josh Palumbo, forest management coordinator for The Wintergreen Nature Foundation. He’s just not sure when or for how long. “I expect to have pretty good color up here by October first at the latest,” Josh estimated. “Especially if we get some 40-degree nights and [then] we’ll see it by late September.” The colors of autumn are actually the true pigments of the leafs drifting to the ground. The green is actually a mask of sorts, a fake color, chlorophyll, caused by photosynthesis. That’s the science of it. continued on page 46

A Smart Move

It’s a good time to buy a home in Virginia

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Some buyers are already taking advantage of the situation and are not sitting on the sidelines. If you’ve got good credit, a plan to stay in your next home for at least a few years, and have found your dream home, snap it up. According to the Virginia Association of Realtors, making a home purchase now may be a smart move. Here are several things you should know about Virginia’s real estate market.

Since November 2004, the average price of a typical Virginia home has appreciated about 42%.

There is no such thing as a national real estate market. Real estate markets are not the same everywhere. When you are looking to buy or sell, pay close attention to sales price trends and inventory in your target market. Most Virginia real estate markets have fared much better than perceived from national real estate headlines.

Housing demand is expected to grow. Estimates show the Commonwealth’s population will increase by almost 500,000 by 2010. These new Virginians will need a place to live!

Home prices are still higher than they were three or four years ago. Homeowners who have been in their homes for several years are most likely to reap financial rewards when selling.

A house is a place to make a home, not just a buck. Most purchasers buy a home to live in and not to flip. The value of strong communities, rooted families, civic pride, comfortable retirement, and a higher quality of life can’t be expressed on a balance sheet.

Mortgage funds are available. Buyers with good credit and realistic affordability expectations can qualify for a loan. Even those with damaged credit or limited means can get help through organizations such as the Virginia Housing and Development authority. Owning a home builds wealth in a

way that renting can’t. According to the Federal Reserve Board, the average renter’s net worth is $4,800, while the average homeowner’s net worth is $171,000. Clearly it pays to own a home!

Use a Realtor and get 26% more for your home. The median selling price of single family “For Sale by Owner” homes in Virginia was $249,500 compared with $313,400 for Realtor assisted home sales in 2006.

First time home buyers have an extra incentive to buy. First time home buyers are a target market; in 2006 they accounted for 29% of all Virginia home sales. This population has an extra purchase incentive because qualifying first time home buyers can receive a tax credit up to $7,500 for a limited time. The home purchase must be made by July 1, 2009.

Now is the time to buy. Housing inventory levels are the highest in years and interest rates are low. If you are a buyer, this market is for you. If you are selling first, price your home correctly. Competitive pricing is important because well priced homes sell faster.

It’s prime time for second homes. Savvy investors and prospective retirees know real estate is important to their portfolios. About one third of all home sales are second homes or vacation properties; Virginia has plenty of inventory and many desirable second home destinations such as Wintergreen Resort.

What can happen when two churches worship as one. STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2008

Nearly half a century ago, two Lovingston-area churches decided to pray together. Lovingston Baptist and Mountain Cove Baptist had been sharing the same pastor, Rev. Bob Taylor. On the first Sunday of October 1959, members of both congregations gathered at Lovingston Baptist to worship as one. The parishioners who prayed together stayed together and, in 1961, built a new church and named it Calvary Baptist. When Rev. John Gordon took over as pastor in 1967, he was leading a merged flock. Even so, he says he couldn’t tell its members apart. “I don’t even remember a time when there was a difference or a hard feelings between the people that came and I had a hard time identifying the people that came from both churches,” Gordon says. “They just fit, they got along well.” It was a good thing they did. Just two years into his post as Calvary’s pastor, Rev. Gordon witnessed an already-unified church become even more so. It was August 19, 1969. “Our church softball team was playing at the school across the road,” Rev. Gordon says, looking across U.S. 29 to the brick building facing him. “It started to sprinkle rain but the game continued and it wasn’t raining hard and they finished the game.” Rev. Gordon and his family lived in the parsonage next door to the church. The sprinkling rain later turned into a storm so intense, water began leaking into the window sills. Rev. Gordon put the storm doors down, mopped up the water, and went back to bed. Gordon’s morning routine was to swing by the Lovingston Post Office before beginning his work day. “So about 8:00 or 8:30, somewhere along there, I went over to get the mail and when I did, I became aware of what had happened.” He returned home to get his wife. “Ruth,” he told her, “you’re going to have to ride with me over to Lovingston and see the damage. Because I don’t have the ability to describe what has happened.” As they surveyed the damage, the Gordons ran into a friend who had told them about what had happened in Ponton’s Cove. One of the three houses there, the Giles’, was gone. Rev. Gordon’s oldest daughter had spent the night at the Spencer home which was still standing, but the family was unaccounted for. Rev. Gordon brought his wife back home and headed north to Ponton’s Cove. The good news was his daughter and the family she stayed with were alright. The bad news was that much of the area was destroyed and scores of people were missing. With downed power lines and a water system that had been destroyed, even Lovingston’s survivors faced an uncertain future. Luckily, Calvary Baptist had its own well and it’s electricity was still running. “As a result, the church became a focal point for the feeding of people and we immediately started checking on our people and people were coming to Lovingston who had nothing to eat.” Those days, Rev. Gordon says, went by as a blur. The church ladies filled the kitchen making sandwiches and handing out food to people who came by. The pews in the sanctuary were filled with a truckload of shoes, thanks to a generous donation from a shoe company in Lynchburg. Rev. Gordon’s last year at Calvary Baptist was 1974. Given what he experienced as its pastor, Rev. Gordon is not surprised the church has continued to prosper. 40 years after Hurricane Camille, and 50 years after the two congregations merged, Calvary Baptist is preparing to celebrate its Year of Jubilee. As Calvary’s history shows, a church that prays together, stays together. NCL

Rev. John Gordon joined Calvary Baptist as its pastor in 1967 (opposite and top). His congregation was made up of two churches, Lovingston Baptist and Mountain Cove Baptist, which merged in 1959 (above, left and right). A ground breaking ceremony for the new church was held in 1960 (above) and the new church was completed a year later (right). To kick off its year-long Jubilee celebration, the church will have one of its former pastors preach on Sunday, October 5. For more information, call 434-263-5010, or visit CalvaryBaptistNelson.com.

WATCH THEM PLAY October 4, 2008, 9:30am - 11am Monticello Mustangs vs. Nelson Governors @ Monticello High School (rear fields) October 18, 2008, 11am - 12:30pm Nelson Governors vs. Fluvanna Flucos Gold @ Albemarle High School (rear fields) October 25, 2008, 11am - 12:30pm Albemarle Patriots Red vs. Nelson Governors @ Charlottesville High School As well as Nelson County High School’s football team did last year, it’s looking like the team will be even stronger in just a few years. “If all these kids stay together,” Coach Jimmy Koschara said of his team of 10- and 11-year-olds, “Nelson County High School will be absolutely blessed to have a team like this of this size.” This year, Koschara has 12 returning players, many of whom have been working together for six years already and he’s been working with them ever since. The Nelson Youth Football League, part of the Thomas Jefferson Youth Football League, teaches the basics of football to children between the ages of 8 and 14, though many begin playing at younger ages and continue all the way through high school. Nelson County has one team for each of the three age groups: the 8- and 9-year-old Founders, the 10and 11-year-old Governors and the middle schoolaged Presidents.

Tracy Adkins, an organizer for the NYFL, has a son on the Founders team. Adkins said her 9-yearold, Brice, has been playing since he was 5 years old. When they’re that young, they play flag football and don’t use pads and Adkins was happy to see her son getting exercise and having fun. While she’s still gung-ho about those things, like most of the football moms, she’s getting worried now that the kids are older. As the boys get bigger, the rules of the games start changing. The oldest group of players, the Presidents coached by Rodney Campbell, play by Virginia High School League rules and have even spent time in the weight room with the Nelson County High School football teams. Brice isn’t there yet, but that doesn’t keep his mom from noticing the changes. “Now that they [use] the pads and stuff … I get a little nervous,” she admitted. “But of course, Dad

pushes for it, so, you know, he’s happy. All the dads are.” Alaska may have hockey moms, but Nelson is chock full of football dads. “Everything down here is strictly volunteer, each team has a head coach and then we got several assistant coaches,” Adkins explained. “Most of the guys that are doing the coaching are parents, their kids are on the team.” Like Koschara, whose son Hunter is a returning Governor. Koschara doesn’t coach alone, though. And this year three of his assistant coaches played for Nelson County High School. This season, the Governors on Koschara’s team have a tough schedule. They’re playing teams from Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Monticello and Fluvanna. “They’re all big teams,” said Koschara, but he’s not worried. “We’ve got a heck of a lot more heart.” NCL

road trip!

A pair of “Jeans” make its way to Woods Mill STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by TOMMY STAFFORD Just a few days ago they were complete strangers but now, Jean – who goes by Jeannie to avoid confusion – and Gene McGaughey and Chuck and Jane Strauss are “new best friends.” And they’re sharing a house. Both couples are what Jane calls Evergreeners, members of the Evergreen Club, a group of people who like to travel and meet new people. They open up their homes to people passing through and in exchange, get free lodging when they’re visiting the home of a fellow Evergreener. “It’s been wonderful,” Jean said of her and Gene’s Evergreen Club experience. “I could become a salesperson for Evergreen. Everyone has been so nice and welcoming and you want to stay longer.” “It’s an amazing group of people,” Jean continued. “Somebody told us, ‘When you join Evergreen, it’s not that you’re inviting strangers into your home,

While touring Central Virginia, the McGaugheys plan to visit several local atrractions.

you’re inviting friends that you haven’t met yet.’” Jeannie and Gene were staying for a few days with the Strauss’ in Woods Mill on their way back to Green Valley, Arizona. From Nova Scotia. Oh, and they’re on a motorcycle. They bought the bike just after retiring in 2000 and have since put 90,000 miles, this trip being their longest. They left Arizona August 12 and hope to return September 30. It’s a long trip, but they make the most out of it – even in the rain. So far the West-Coasters have driven through New York City, visited with friends in New Hampshire, coincidentally met up with fellow Green Valley residents in Bar Harbor, stayed with two Chuck-and-Judy pairs and continue to make friends everywhere they go. continued on page 33

Scott and buddy, Silas Mays, prepare for a horse show.

When Lindsey Osborne was growing up, she didn’t go to school. She went to the farm. Rodes Farm, to be exact. Lindsey, now 27, and her siblings were – for the most part – home schooled and their mother worked at Rodes Farm. The horses were like their classmates, friends and confidants. And they introduced her to people, too. “Yea, it was definitely my source of, you know, it was all the social interaction,” she explained. “All my friends rode and there was a tremendous amount of responsibility in having horses.” Many young people, Lindsey included, learned a lot more at Rodes Farm then they ever could have in a classroom. “Not only are you caring for [the horses], there’s also a partnership that you’re developing,” said the young woman who now works as a supervisor, one of the first jobs her mom had at Rodes Farm. “There are so many life lessons that you acquire from it, definitely.” Now that the farm, one of the public farms left, is in danger of shutting its doors, the community is rallying together, trying to keep it open for generations to come. Phil Chabot, president of Rodes Farm Stables Foundation, Inc., joined to help come up with a solution that didn’t involve getting rid of the horses and the land. “The whole point of the objective is to make sure that [Rodes Farm] can continue to operate,” said Phil of the plan the association hopes to enact. Rob Sullivan, Wintergreen Resort’s General Manager, says he supports community efforts to maintain the Rodes Valley lifestyle. “What we’re trying to accomplish here is a community based collaboration that allows the stables to go and continue operate, but alleviates the responsibility of the operation of the stables from [Wintergreen Partners, Inc.]” After simply keeping it open, Chabot hopes the Foundation will stay together and work to make the farm even better. He’s thinking horse rescue, therapy, educational programs that work with Nelson County Schools – you name it. He and many others in the community feel that it’s very important that the farm be preserved. Not just for the people who love it now and work with the horses. “First is,” he started, “I think it’s important that open space be preserved.” Nelson has a lot of open space, but this particular space has memories attached. Phil’s daughter rode there for six years, as did countless Nelson children. “It’s amazing how many people that place has touched in one way, shape or form,” he said, thinking of the letters, e-mails and phone calls he has received from people supporting the foundation. Plus, there are young horse lovers yet to come. Lindsey has seen children from far away that have no experience with animals immediately dote on them, love them, care for them.

Lindsey with Harper, her beloved thoroughbred mare. That’s him today in the main photograph, opposite page. “I think in this day and age, kids need that, they need to keep that connection with being outside and taking care of animals and what’s real,” she said, thinking of guests that bring children from inner-city Washington, D.C. or New York. “It’s that connection to the natural world.” But it’s not just the youngest of new riders that benefit from the interaction with horses. Lindsey says riding can help in many facets of life. When she’s had a rough day, she said there’s nothing more soothing than taking a nice, long walk with your horse. But on the other hand, competitive riding has helped Lindsey become a leader and a caretaker. “It develops all parts of you,” she said. NCL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

Like elves working in Santa’s workshop, nurseryman around the country each year work on improving goodies for gardeners from sea to shining sea. Of these genii that decorate every garden center from now until Christmas, one particular genus excites me each year more and more due to their innate ability to draw me into my favorite time of year – fall. They are the pansy. And aside from their name, there is nothing ‘pansy’ about them… In choosing your pansies for the fall, remember one rule that will determine whether they decorate your landscape for the next 6 months or just a few days post-purchase – that rule is timing. Once you make it to about the end of September, pull out those pruning sheers and/or shovel and begin making space for them – whether it be removing old, spent annuals or improving soil for a new area. This may contradict your better garden sense because your annuals may actually be perking up from the decreased humidity and cooler nights and therefore could be putting on a show similar to their early spring display. Trust me, ripe them out. Even though pansies are tough, without time to put our new root growth, frost and freeze are tougher and Father Time

does not offer countless warm opportunities in the fall for them to grow as we approach record cold and snow falls this fall (and yes, this is wishful thinking!). In regards to varieties, you have dozens to choose from. The biggest factor that should dictate which ones go where should always be bloom size – close to the house, bigger blooms (2 ½ inches); away from the house, smaller blooms (1-1 ½ inches). The reason is actually quite simple. Smaller blooming varieties typically have many more flowers per plant while bigger blooming varieties have fewer blooms per plant. Therefore close to your house you can actually appreciate the size, texture and color much better than while moving along at, let’s say, 20 miles per hour. However, when you choose the smaller flowering varieties and plant them in mass, an F-14 approaching Mach 1 would be able to appreciate the color (Ok, that may be a stretch, but you get my point). Remember also that the smaller flowering varieties typically recover faster from inclement weather since they have more flower stalks per plant and each bloom has less surface area to be affected by ice, snow and freeze than the larger blooming varieties. As for color, I try to keep dark colors

(blues and purples) planted with lighter, complimentary colors just behind (whites and yellows), especially when it comes to roadside plantings. I feel that this tactic helps to draw the eye to the darker color – especially if the two colors are indeed complimentary. So if you go for the blue with a yellow eye near the mailbox, try a yellow or offyellow as its backdrop. If a total mix is your medicine, implement this planting near the house so that a guest can appreciate each and every color and not just see a mosaic of shades if viewed from a car window. Remember, the

closer you get to your house, the more detail can be appreciated. As always, after planting water well and feed with a well-rounded, slow release fertilizer. By the way, if you don’t want to deadhead your pansies then don’t – research has shown that it really does not help that much. My personal favorite series are the Sky (Clear Sky & Skyline), Majestic Giant, Delta, Matrix and Bingo Series. With these series, in regards to color, the sky is the limit. Until our next article, Happy Gardening!

continued from page 39 While Chuck and Jane don’t ride atop a twowheeled vehicle, Ruby, they’re car, has more than 100,000 miles on it and Chuck said most have been logged during the last four years. They’ve been Evergreen Club members since 2000 when Jane saw it mentioned in the newspaper. So far they’ve been to New Mexico, Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Dakota and back around. “We’ve just used it constantly,” raved Jane. And they’ve met a lot of great people like the McGaugheys. Chuck knew as soon as they pulled into the driveway that they’d be fast friends. “As soon as they came, got off their motorcycle, I just knew these were going to be typical Evergreeners that you just feel comfortable with,” he said. He’s not traveling for a while, he’ll be having his second knee surgery in November, but he and Jane definitely plan to get back into the game when he’s done recovering, he said. “We’re going to come to Arizona.” NCL

Arizona retirees Jeannie and Gene McGaughey are in the middle of a cross country trip that includes a stop at the home of fellow Evergreen Club members Chuck and Jane Strauss of Woods Mill. Club members open up their homes to fellow Club members when they travel. TOMMY STAFFORD

Hunter’s Motivation What is hunting doing in the “Ask The Doc” column (or, as Yvette calls it, the “What Up Doc” column) you might ask? Well, this time of year hunting has a lot to do with everything to a lot of folks. Really, it is an activity that has a lot of potential health benefits. If you aren’t a hunter, I’d encourage you to read on, as there are some thoughts here for everyone. As fall draws near I see some interesting things happen in my clinic. There is always a lot of excitement around school being back in (and a lot of colds too), and flu shots tend to be on everyone’s minds (“when will they be in?”– I think I can hear that question in my dreams!). But I am always most impressed with the motivation of the hunters. This time of year I see guys who are on disability for back pain figuring out how they can make it in to the woods for a hunt, overweight people walking to get in shape for the steep climb to their stand, people eating healthy game animals and therefore lean meats containing little to no cholesterol. Hunters take time to be still in the wild and clear their

Another reason why people trust Afton Family Medicine.

minds – a great form of “de-stressing.” The bottom line is, hunting is extremely motivating to hunters. It drives them to work on their health, so they can enjoy what they are doing. There is a lesson here for everyone: find what motivates you and use it for your health’s benefit! Enjoy playing with your grandkids? Use that to motivate you to chase them in the yard (exercise) or serve them healthy foods (and therefore better your own eating habits). Knees hurt? Pain can be a great motivator if you use it to your advantage: find a way to eat less and therefore loose weight to take the pounding off the knees and lesson your pain. Good health does not “just happen.” We have to work at it. Finding what motivates you and using that to better your health is a very worthwhile activity. Nia Gets You in Shape from the Inside Out Certified Nia instructor Betty Kerr wrote this month’s column: Nia is a form of fusion fitness that blends dance, martial arts and healing arts to create a high powered and fun workout. The 52 movements in Nia routines are drawn from nine fitness disciplines including tae kwon do, tai chi, yoga, modern dance and jazz dance. Combined with fantastic music that ranges from Celine Dion to Dead Can Dance, Nia opens doors to creative free dance while providing a sophisticated cardiovascular workout. Nia was created by Debbie and Carlos Rosas during the days of the aerobics “revolution.” What stirred the change in their philosophy was the recognition that there were too many injuries from high impact aerobics and fitness was more like hard work than a joyous opportunity to cut loose and have fun. They developed Nia, a fitness practice whose fundamental principles include the joy of movement and the body’s way; or rather, moving the body the way it was designed to be moved. These two principles eliminate the

40 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2008

risk of impact injuries and make an hour long Nia class something to look forward to every time. Exercise that is performed strictly for its own physical sake, divorced from emotions and the human spirit is rarely satisfying over the long run and eventually it fails to be sustainable. Nia integrates one’s neurology (including mind, emotions and spirit) with the outer body or musculature through a holistic comprehensive approach that combines several classic movement forms like yoga and tai chi. And then there’s great music and the easy to learn routines that bring people back for more. Nia can help you lose weight in a fun atmosphere and aids with stress reduction while building strength and cardiovascular fitness. Boogie to the best music! Agnes F. continued from page 26 That’s how you see the colors and decide which tree will be your favorite to gaze at as the days get shorter. Well, most people. Josh can’t really seem to decide. “Sugar maples are great, they’ve got some nice oranges but they also have red pigments in there, they’ll have yellow, they’ll have all three of those. said Josh. “I love black gum sassafras. I like the reds, the reds are real nice. Unfortunately, this year Josh isn’t sure how great the leaf watching around here will be, color-wise. “Those trees were real stressed with moths [and lack of water], and they’re all going to drop early, he said. “So that will affect the Blue Ridge Parkway’s color. The stressed trees, ones that didn’t get enough water or just haven’t had a great year are already changing, Josh said. And some canopy trees won’t change for weeks.

But he expects the area to be pretty full with “leaf peepers or “leaf lookers anyway. The colors make for a good hike, but Josh said people come up to Wintergreen no matter what the leaves are doing. And it makes for a more-than crowded Blue Ridge Parkway. Many locals avoid it like the plague during October and November. “The parkway’s absolutely hopping, I avoid it at all costs. You get too many leaf peepers he joked. But he understands why. “I understand why they’re there. It’s pretty nice. In addition to the Wintergreen Fall Foliage Festival that will be held Oct. 13 and 14, there are about a dozen hikes trekking out into the mountains every Saturday in the leaf-falling months. “You kind of have it all, said Josh of his trees. “You have the yellows and oranges and reds and the browns all going at once. NCL
