from thepublishers Santa says there’s a dump truck in Adam’s future but maybe all he really wants is another dust pan. Though its home is the wall near the wood stove behind the Alcatraz baby gate, Adam has taken it many places, namely the hallway, the kitchen and the den. If you’ve ever freed anyone from prison, you know it takes a lot of skill and near surgical precision. It is also helpful to have a distraction. Distractions here usually come in the form of phone calls. A parent answering a ringing phone is like a prison guard falling asleep in your cell. We call this opportunity. Adam senses opportunity and sticks his arm through the gate, grabbing the handle of the pan, turning it to negotiate its release. Though the dust pan is now in Adam’s possession, it is not yet truly free. The next step is to blend in. If you are to blend in to this house, you are either a furry four-legged animal, a bundle of magazines, a wall that needs a little touch up of paint, or a free-ranging child dragging a common household object. So, Adam flips the dust pan upside down and starts pushing it along the floor, over rugs and thresholds. Along

the way, that dust pan passes family upon family of dust bunnies hiding behind doors and under jelly cabinets. The boy and his dust pan are blending-in quite well. As will the Christmas Tree we are getting. Adam was still too young to experience much of it last year. But this year, we’ll have plenty of pine needles to pick up. That’s what dump trucks are for. Merry Christmas! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com Ti Voglio Bene “The rich are different from you and me.” So wrote a young F. Scott Fitzgerald to an even younger Hemingway. Tweaking that a little I’ll say, “The Italians are different from we Americans.” They seem to love life at all times, and a central part of life is wine. Italian cooking may well rank as more people’s favorite (myself included) over any other world cuisine. Stepping into Italy…the following will make beautiful holiday wines: Accordini, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, 2006 – If wines could be sainted, this one surely would be nominated. It is rich, spicy, concentrated, smooth, with intense aromas of cherries. A blend of primarily Corvina (the finest red grape found in Valpolicella), Rondinella and Rossignola. The grapes dry on racks until November, then are aged on the lees for fifteen days in the Ripasso (repassed) style which increases the final alcohol and phenolic (what makes wines healthy!) content. Corvina is particularly good for dried grape wines, and the Veneto from which Valpolicella comes, is the only region where any serious quantity of

wine is still made using dried grapes. This was the only way the Greeks and Romans had of increasing the resulting wines’ alcohol and sugar content. Such wines are described as Recioto, and if all the grape sugar is fermented out to alcohol, they’re called, Amarone, or “bitter”. A word of caution: there are vast amounts of Valpolicella that are thin and pale, yet bottled up just the same by the millions to be shipped to Italian or Italianate restaurants the world over. To avoid the insipid, look for “Superiore” on the label. Valpolicella described as Superiore must be at least 12 % alcohol and aged at least a year before bottling. Look also for a reliable producer, or ask at your local wine shop. $18.99 Malvasia – From the superb property outside of Piacenza, La Stoppa, run by the vivacious and passionate Elena Pantaleoni, comes this festive sparkling Malvasia, made from 100 % Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. The wine has the deep, rich amber color of Malvasia and its honeyed, caramelized taste is deceptive against high acidity, making for a beautiful aperitif or equally a dessert course. The ideal companion to shortcrust pastries and biscuits, it’s elegant

and unique, all organic and I can’t sing its praises enough for a sumptuous holiday sparkler...and it’s beautiful in the glass. $16.99 From Italy, we hop to Spain with another unusual sparkling wine. Musva – Thirty km west of Valencia is the co-operative Cheste Agraria that produces this delicious sparkler. Musva is made from 100% Muscat grapes (hence the name, a blend of Muscat and Valencia) and deliciously perfumed with Muscat’s famed exotic white flowers and sweet lychee, all enveloped in succulent orange blossom aromas. Totally different. Totally wonderful. $15.99 Okay, so Hemingway reputedly argued back to Fitzgerald, “Yes, they have more money.” And to finish up, I’ll extend the analogy I began and say, “The Italian just have better food.” And wine? Food, wine…Italian, Spanish, French…better? No, just different. I think it comes down to a question of mentality of life. Try for yourself. I don’t think any of these will disappoint. And happy holidays to all. Kay Pfaltz is co-owner of Basic Necessities in Nellysford.

But wide-slam open doesn’t win races on its own, so it’s helpful the 11-year-old Nellysford native pairs his speed with stamina and style.

“I see a young kid that once he straps that helmet on he’s more focused than some of the adults I’ve seen in my life,” Chuck Cusson, past president of the Virginia Mini-Cup Racing Association, said. “He’s a nice, clean driver.” Prior to 2009, Koschara spent close to four years gassing around in a go-kart racing circuit where the cars pushed 40 mph. “Once he found victory lane, he was pretty much a regular there,” Cusson said of Koschara’s karting days which began shortly after Koschara and his dad, Jimmy [whose racing blood runs back into his days working pit crews], started hanging around Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro.

This year, Koschara graduated to the Mini Cups, which look like NASCARs that could fit completely on a pallet jack. And his skills spilled over nicely into the minis with the nine top-three finishes over 15 races, earning him Rookie of the Year and enough points to win the championship series stacked with seasoned racers who are, in some cases, more than four times Koschara’s age. “Racing against him is about as fun as it can get.” driver Justin LaDuke, 14, of Rocky Mount, N.C., said. LaDuke, also one of the VMCRA’s youngest racers, led the 2009 championship series in points coming into the final race of the season in October at Shenandoah Speedway; only to be edged out when Koschara finished first and LaDuke finished fifth. Koschara is now talking about his plans next season to run a few races in the Grand Stock series where the cars are, well, car-sized cars - think Chevrolet Monte Carlo. “It’s going faster, it’s bigger, it’s more aggressive racing,” Hunter said of Grand Stock. Although, for non-racing fans it’ll still be another five years before most people see Koschara behind the wheel. He’s planning to make that debut in a Camaro. NCL

Though the face of Nelson County has changed over the years, it has still managed to hang on to its old ways. Lynn Coffey noticed that 25 years ago. That’s when she and a neighbor started a free monthly magazine called Back Roads. “Our neighbors here… they were doing all of the old things,” said Lynn. “And we thought that was worth reading because that culture was going away. It was fading… so we thought.” continued on page 17

continued from page 15 Well, after just one year, Lynn was on her own, but she stuck to it and published Back Roads until 2006 when she “retired.” “I was really just enjoying my retirement, but I found that I was actually still dreaming about interviewing people,” she said. “And people would call me and say, ‘Hey, you know I’m making homemade butter today.’ And I found that I could not not do it. So I would go and interview people even though I had no place to put it.” So after hearing time and time again that she should write a book, Lynn has finally decided just to go for it. “Last winter I had a lot of time on my hands and I just started to put it together,” she said. And now, with the help of Quartet Books, that book, Backroads: Plain Folk and Simple Livin’, is being published. Over the course of the last three decades, Lynn’s style and talent have definitely improved. “When I look back, oh my goodness, [those early issues of Back Roads were] so bad,” she exclaimed. Back then, she was making little 8-page papers and handing them out at about 25 houses. “Even though it was terrible, they really loved it and they wanted more,” said Lynn.

So more they got. Eventually the paper got up to 40 pages, which is not easy considering Lynn was doing everything herself – from interviews, to writing, to photographing and even layout and distribution. After a while, she cut the paper down to 24 pages and that’s where it stayed for the majority of its existence. And it was always free. “I wanted the people who I was interviewing to have it. Most of them were mountain people on a fixed income,” she said. “But it was for them that I was doing it, so I never did charge.” Unfortunately, her book will not be free. But it will be worth the $20 it costs. Her publisher told her that books are generally $19.95, but Lynn turned down that idea right away. “I’d have to have 500 rolls of nickels!” she said. So the book is $20 exactly and Lynn will be selling it herself, right out of her house. Pick up a copy any time from the house in Love – just not on Sundays. “You know, even God took a day off,” said Lynn. NCL

To order a copy of Lynn’s book by mail, call her at (540) 949-0329.

We have no clue how old this cash register is but we do know it is time to celebrate Wintergreen Grocers’ first birthday; before that, we knew it as Valleymont. It is a safe guess the register dates back to when the dollars inside it were backed by gold. However the age of Wintergreen Grocers’ proprietor, Paul Koschara, is a matter of dispute.

Tax incentive for first-time homebuyers AND current homeowners

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Don’t delay! This is an opportune time to buy a home. Home prices have dropped, interest rates are low, and the federal government has extended the tax incentive for first-time homebuyers. In addition, the tax credit has been expanded to include current homeowners. Even if you already own a home, you may qualify for a home purchase tax credit. Read more to see how the tax credit has been modified and to see if you qualify to save money by making a “timely” home purchase. Home Purchase Period: The qualifying house hunter has until April 30, 2010 to find a home AND have it under contract. This means that the home must be selected and the contract ratified by this date. The settlement or closing on the home must occur on or before June 30, 2010. Amount of Incentive: The credit is equal to 10% of the cost of the home, up to a maximum credit of

$8,000 for first time buyers and $6,500 for repeat buyers. Homes that cost more than $800,000 are ineligible. Credit Logistics: This is a tax credit, which is even better than a tax deduction because it is subtracted directly from your tax liability. If the credit is more than your total tax liability for the year, you will receive a refund check for the balance. A married buyer filing separately is only eligible for up to a $4,000 credit as a first time home buyer and $3,250 as a repeat home buyer. Eligible Properties: Any single family residence (including a detached, modular, or manufactured home, condo, co-op, townhouse, etc…) that will be used as a principal residence. First-time Homebuyer Qualifications: A first time homebuyer can take advantage of the full $8,000 credit. This is an individual who has not owned a “primary” home for the

past three years. For married joint filers, both must meet the first-time buyer criteria to take the credit on a joint return. Opportunity worth noting: As long as you do not own the place that has been your primary residence for the past three years, you may still qualify. In essence, you could own other real estate and still qualify! Current Homeowner (or Repeat Buyer) Qualifications: Existing homeowners who have lived in their current home for five consecutive years out of the past eight years are eligible for up to a $6,500 tax credit when they purchase another primary residence. Opportunity worth noting: Based on current guidelines, the existing homeowner does NOT have to sell the current house to qualify for this tax credit. However, the home purchased does have to become the new primary residence. Also, there is no requirement that the existing homeowner has to buy “up”, so the

homebuyer could downsize. Income Guidelines: There are income limitations. Individuals with an adjusted gross income up to $125,000 (or $225,000 if filing jointly) are eligible for the full tax credit. The credit is phased down for those earning more. It is not available for those with incomes above $145,000 (or $245,000 if filing jointly). This incentive is good news for buyers and sellers. While the buyer gets the tax credit, a “motivated” seller may be a lot more likely to attract a “motivated” buyer. To better understanding how this tax credit may apply to you, please consult your lender, accountant, or other financial professional.

Wintergreen Performing Arts’

The first Christmas House Tour organized by Wintergreen Performing Arts featured one home. This year, the number has tripled. “Folks had so much fun last year we wanted to include more houses this time around, said Kaye Pietrowicz, the tour’s chairperson. Last year’s tour, which raises money for WPA, featured the home of Hank and Barbara Gibb. “This year Al & Ginny Simpson have opened their home up, Kaye said. “We call it the sister house to the Gibbs’ home from last year. It will have lots of live musicians, lots of decorations and more. The Gibb home is a historic home. Contrast that with the newer home of Steve and Margaret Macik on nearby Monacan Drive. As part of the tour, their house will have wine and cheese, along with vendors selling everything from Christmas wreathes to Christmas books. The last stop on the tour takes you to Cedar Meadows to the home of Bobby and Annie Mae Rose. They are planning an extensive Charles Dickens’ Village display. “This is something to see. It not only has the people, it has the trains, it moves. It’s astonishing, Kaye says. NCL The WPA Christmas House Tour kicks off at 1PM Sunday, December 5. The homes are open until 5PM that day and can be toured in any order. Tickets are available at www.wintergreenperformingarts.org for a cost of $20 in advance until the end of November, or $25 after that and at the door. For more information call 434-361-9097.

A Christmas Tradition STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by BEN HERNANDEZ

Some people look forward to a good snow storm in December. Others get excited about Christmas candy or a visit from the man in red. And, yes, there are those who can’t wait for a kiss under the mistletoe. But ask anyone in Afton what they are most excited about this holiday season, and you’re sure to hear about Tom and Mona Ashley’s Christmas light display.

DECEMBER 2009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 27

Once upon a time, the Ashleys went to Kmart and came home with a light up sleigh complete with Santa Claus and reindeer.

You can check out the Ashley’s lights on Bland Wade Road in Afton. And don’t worry about slowing down as you drive by – everyone around you will be doing the exact same thing.

28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2009

Fast forward six years and their yard is a must-see for anyone who lives nearby – and many who don’t. “They tell their friends about it, too,” said Mona. “A lot of people that we don’t even know come by.” The Ashleys have come a long way since that one sleigh. Every year they add to their collection. Tom said they probably have about 35 or 40 figurines of all sizes – all twinkling in white and clear Christmas lights – plus a driveway lined with

candy canes and snow men and nearly 20 Christmas trees. “We do have an awfully big yard,” said Mona. But her favorite light-up ornament isn’t on the yard. Her prized possession, a life-size singing, dancing Santa Claus, spends December on the front porch. NCL

Smoke Signals

STORY by AARON LEE PHOTOGRAPHY by KIM RAFF

Jeremiah Becker, cook, feeds the smoker with wood outside of Paulie’s Pig-Out. 30 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2009

Paul, owner of Paulie’s Pig-Out in Afton, prepares his pulled pork for sandwiches on a stove in his kitchen.

Paul Matheny’s career as a concert tubist began and ended during the same week back in middle school because he couldn’t read music. So, he ditched band class and signed up for home economics. Seemed like a logical move for a kid whose grandmother would put him to work helping her prepare meals at the Miller School in Albemarle County. “I would go with her during the summer and make mash potatoes for 300 people,” Matheny said. In the years since, he’s graduated from lunchroom potatoes to the handpulled Boston butts and dry-rubbed ribs he slow smokes in the parking lot of Paulie’s Pig-Out in Afton. The smoke comes from apple and hickory wood he gets from his land, and the customers, well, they’re stopping from all over. “I can see faces when people drive by,” Matheny said of passersby’ rubbernecking. When they walk through the door, Matheny encourages them to sign the whiteboard walls that cover the waiting-area. Since opening in September, customers from Key West to Massachusetts have put in orders. But while the pork baits people, the sides of baked macaroni and cheese and desserts like coconut custard pie are fast becoming calling cards, Matheny said. “You don’t come here if you’re on a diet,” said Matheny, whose first job, at 14, was in the kitchen at Gaslight in Charlottesville. “Everything I’ve eaten has been real good,” said landlord John Falls, of Afton, whose family opened Fall’s Grocery in the same location during the mid-1940s and operated it for decades. Paulie’s sits at a crook in the road along Virginia 151 and was most-recently a restaurant specializing in gizzards and livers. Gizzards and livers are on Paulie’s menu, too. Along with baked chicken. And then there’s the rolls and buns that Nancy Foster, a longtime family friend of Matheny, makes. The recipe is the same one she used during 26 and a half years as a lunch lady and cafeteria manager for Albemarle County Schools. “I love BBQ and his is so good,” Foster said. NCL

The Greenery The best variety of greenery is Magnolia DD Blanchard which exhibits exquisite foliage of deep green on the top and brown on the bottom. It is best to plant DD Blanchard in plenty of sun and in an area that will allow it to reach its full 30-40 foot height. Just about any florist you speak with will be eyeing any and all large American Boxwoods around this time of the year. Without pruning, this species can get upwards of 8 feet or more so prune and plan carefully. Sun or shade works just fine. Leyland Cypress provides an excellent backbone to any decoration with its deep, rich green foliage. Another added advantage is that Leyland grows like a weed – sometimes adding as much as 2-3 feet per season. Plant in full sun and allow for 25+ feet of growth. Some of the newer varieties of evergreens available include Cryptomeria Yoshino which also boasts excellent growth rates along with very desirable foliage. Allow for 30 feet tall by 15 feet wide when planting. White Pine and Spruce have been solid standbys for years for Christmas greenery. When planting these varieties stick to the species and choose locations that are a fair distance from your home so it can grow to their full size. Plant both in full sun. The Fillers A great filler for wreaths and the like is Winterberry or Ilex verticillata

‘Sprite’. This plant boasts absolutely stunning, dime-sized berries this time of year and they hold well into the holiday season. Choose a full sun site and allow for 4 feet of growth. Don’t forget your male! Another red-berried variety is a cousin to Sprite called Sparkleberry. This variety grows somewhat larger than Sprite but is equally adorned with wonderful red berries. Plant in full sun in a spot allowing for about 6-9 feet of size. Although I would never be a strong advocate of variegated plants, Chamaecyparis ‘Gold Mop’ is a nice touch to the holiday wreath. Plan on ‘Gold Mop’ to grow to around 6 feet in width and height and full blazing sun. One slower growing variety for that golden color with different texture is Aucuba ‘Gold Dust’. This plant really stands out with it mottled yellow color on a deep green leaf. Plant in shade and allow for around 5 feet in height by 4 feet in width. With the breeding that is being performed in the Genus Buxus or the common boxwood, some varieties with very different foliage have emerged including a golden variety called Elegantissima. This variety’s foliage holds well and adds a very stately golden touch to a wreath or other decoration. Plant in part shade and allow enough space to get to around 4 feet tall by 3-4 feet wide. The best blue is the common Blue Spruce. No plant has the combined growth rate (to handle seasonal cuts for decorations) and deep blue color to compete with it. A blue spruce should be planted in full sun and in enough space to allow for a very large specimen. The key in choosing all of these is to be creative in your landscaping as a source, and in your harvesting of these varieties so that your cuts are minimum while young but increase as your plants grow in size. Merry Christmas from all of us here at Saunders Landscapes.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Doc, I am tired all the time and I think I have hypothyroidism. What do you think? I see lots of folks who think there is something medically wrong with them because they are tired. Often, when I hear about their life and schedule, it is no wonder they can’t keep their eyes open! They are up with the kids early, running around all day, working, playing, watching TV, exercising or not, shopping, and not sleeping a whole lot. I certainly fall into a pattern like this some days too – “well if I stay up a little later tonight I will get it done...” What to do about that I don’t know, but it is certainly clear that most of the time people who are tired have a good reason to be that way. But, there are some people who have medical reasons to feel run down, tired, sleepy, or out of energy. Anemia, sleep apnea, depression, and hypothyroidism are some of the possible causes. I think the most common thing people think of when they consider whether they have a medical cause for feeling run down is hypothyroidism. The thyroid is a gland at the bottom of the neck in the front that makes thyroid hormone. Thyroid

helps to control all kinds of things like: heat and cold tolerance, mood, alertness, hydration, hair and nail health, muscle strength, and weight management. If the thyroid quits working (which can happen for a variety of reasons such as infection or a person’s own immune system destroying the thyroid gland) then all of those systems the thyroid controls can go haywire. Generally people become tired, down, constipated, cold sensitive, achy, and they gain weight. A blood test is usually all that is needed to diagnose the problem. Once found, it is fairly easy to treat by using medicine to replace the missing thyroid hormone. So, if you have several of the above symptoms, and can’t think of a good reason in your lifestyle to cause them, it probably is worth talking with your doctor about it to see if the testing is warranted for you. Obstacles Preventing Exercise Do you exercise? Many might answer, “ I don’t have time” or “I tried it for awhile but it didn’t help.” Some may even label themselves “lazy”. Perhaps those responses come quickest to the tongue but there could be a myriad of other reasons why you weren’t successful with exercise. Certainly your work and family schedule can be a huge hurdle but here is a list of other obstacles that may prevent you from starting an exercise program: Seasonal affect disorder (SAD) ADHD Food allergies Insulin instability Lack of sleep Pain Fibromyalgia Depression Perfectionism Toxic relationships Not many would jump into exercise when any of these ailments are

occurring. It can be very difficult to take that first step especially if you feel as you have “failed” in previous attempts at an exercise program. Consider perhaps that your previous attempts at exercise may not have been what your body needed. Regular exercise has been demonstrated to improve management of everything from diabetes to depression. The first step is to communicate your health goals and ailments to your health care provider so that the issue can be treated. Then consult professionals when you are ready to begin an exercise program. For many, education and guidance concerning exercise parameters may take a few sessions but the investment in your health is worth it. Agnes F. Nelson County Community Fund STORY by WOODY GREENBERG PHOTO by PAUL PURPURA

The Local Food Hub recently wheeled in more than 400 pounds of potatoes to The Nelson County Pantry in Lovingston. The Pantry is one of several area charities who have received help from the Nelson County Community Fund. For more information, you can write to them at P.O. Box 253, Nellysford, VA 22958. The economy has not been kind to non-profits, particularly those that serve the low-income community. Foundation support has diminished as endowments fell with the downturn in the stock market. Businesses struggling with declining demand cut back on donations. And here in Nelson County, the Opportunity Ball, which was one of the largest fundraisers for local non-profit organizations, has been cancelled as directors of the Nelson County Community Fund decided it should not be held this year because of challenging economic times. In place of the Opportunity Ball, the NCCF is soliciting donations by mail, hoping that the holiday spirit will inspire an outpouring of help-thy-neighbor charitable giving. Over at the Nelson County Food Pantry, one of the beneficiaries of the NCCF, the volunteers who pack food for people who have fallen on hard times are hoping for the best. The NCCF has awarded $400,000 to 36 different area non-profits since its inception ten years ago. The NCCF operates as a clearing house for tax-deductible donations, which are then targeted for worthy non-profit programs and organizations serving the county. “The bottom line is that in these economic times, there are more and more people in need of

38 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2009

assistance, particularly with their food budgets,” says Dick Nees, president of the Pantry’s board of directors. “Our client list has grown by 30 percent over the past 18 months. There are people coming here who have never been here before, never asked for help before.” The Pantry was organized in 1997 by concerned citizens and several local church ministers. Operating at first out of the basement of the old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lovingston, today the Pantry has its own building on the grounds of the new St. Mary’s just north of the village of Lovingston. Every month the Pantry packs and distributes food to more than 300 households representing more than 750 individuals, according to Marian Dixon, vice president. It is operated solely by community volunteers and students from North Branch School and, in the past, Nelson County High School. Dixon says they ordered 350 turkeys for Thanksgiving. She hoped it would be enough. If the Pantry uses NCCF grants to help feed people, the Monticello Area Community Action Agency concentrates on the need for shelter. According to MACAA’s Margaret Morton, from May to October, 2009, five families have received assistance in paying their mortgages to avoid fore-

closure. Each of these families had fallen on hard times after being laid off or having their hours at work substantially reduced. Prior to this they were earning anywhere from $50,000 to $110,000 a year and had never received assistance from MACAA or any other agencies. The families were also referred to other MACAA programs that provide financial counseling to help them avoid foreclosure in the future. MACAA has also used NCCF grant money to help with families’ rent payments. MACAA has received $15,000 from NCCF over the past two years, and Morton says much of it has been going to help people with their electric bills. “There are more this year than ever before,” she says, noting that many people have sharply higher bills due to recent rate increases. MACAA has also helped a woman with colon cancer and other medical needs with a new air conditioner to make her days more comfortable. The NCCF has also made grant awards to the Blue Ridge Medical Center, the Dental Trailer at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, and the Nelson County Community Development Foundation, which helps low income families with emergency home repairs and builds homes for low- and moderate-income people.
