from thepublishers Hours before the blizzard hit, we had to make a choice between going to Waynesboro for diapers, or to Covesville to snag an old Flexible Flyer. We went to Covesville. And it’s a good thing we went early in the day. As I type, much of US 29 in Nelson and Albemarle Counties are impassible or shut down. Several of our friends driving home from Charlottesville were on the road for hours. Some of them had to ditch their cars along the highway and walk home. At the taking of this picture, we had at least 18 in. of snow and drifts were measuring a good 2 feet high. And it seems as if the snow is falling harder. It is quite beautiful. Beauty, though, is in the eye of the beholder who is not stuck in traffic. The dogs. We built this nice wooden overhang out back to keep our dogs comfortable as they do their morning business during a snow storm. In the summer, we like to use it as a deck. The cat stayed inside tonight. Smart cat. On the agenda today: upload this issue, shovel snow, build snowmen. At some point, perhaps tomorrow, we will sled down the hill. I can’t

guarantee you we will be able to make it back up. Just kidding. It’s actually nice to be snowd in. A warm fire, snow flakes falling, and a dwindling stack of diapers. But we’ll be fine. Adam’s got a dump truck and a front end loader. Happy New Year! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Châteauneuf-du-Pape The winter winds of January, a bleak, white sky and a fire in the wood stove are signals stirring me to whip out the Châteauneuf-du-Pape—a big, alcoholic, robust wine which despite its strength is immensely approachable and easy to love. Châteauneufdu-Pape sits in the départment of the Vaucluse one the the most picturesque in France and a region associated with Provence, while Châteauneuf is very much a wine of the southern Rhône. Châteauneuf-du-Pape owes not only its name (New Castle of the Pope) but also its existence to the Popes of Rome. The destiny of this area was much altered when a 72year-old man decided to live there. The old man was short, thin and pale and looked as though he had only a few months to live, but for sixteen more years his dynamic character drove him to build a château more like a fortress than a palace. All this would be unimportant if the man had not been John XXII, the second of the Avignon Popes, (Clement V’s successor) reigning from 1316 to 1334. And although the castle was blown up by the Germans in WWII, its ruins still

loom over the tiny village today. The presence of the papal court in Châteauneuf encouraged winegrowing. John XXII planted a small vineyard from which some excellent wine was harvested and the wine from the area became the fashion of the times, even inspiring one of Alphonse Daudet’s short stories in which he describes a fine bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. La Bastide St. Dominique, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2007 – Robert Parker called 2007 in the Rhône the vintage of his lifetime. And the glory of the 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Papes is that while they will age beautifully, most of them are ready for consumption now. And what heady, fruit-forward consumption it is! This one from the talented Eric Bonnet of La Bastide St. Dominique is no exception—very fruit-forward and smooth. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, it has ripe notes of dark cherries, crushed currants and plums, layered with cocoa and vanilla. $38.99 Domaine Grand Veneur, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2007 – I like Alaine Jaume of Domaine Grand Veneur not only because his wines are outstand-

ing but also because he practices sustainable viticulture. Seventy percent Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, this CDP exhibits a deep ruby/purple color followed by notes of cassis, black raspberries, licorice and a hint of camphor. A long finish that lasts nearly a minute. Drink now and over the next 12-15 years. $39.99 La Bastide St. Dominique, Secrets de Pignan, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2007 – Made from sixty plus yearold vines, this wine is what great Châteauneuf should emulate. Another candidate for aging but equally… you won’t mind drinking it now. The same red and black fruit aromas, yet layered among the fruit are spicy notes, as well as licorice, tobacco, black tea, bittersweet ganache and leather. This is a complex wine for a special occasion. It will pair best with strong cheeses, stews or game. Decant early, but make sure to sip and observe how, over the course of a day, it evolves. Rich and powerful, but unlike the old banking CEOs, it’s pure elegance as well. $52.99 Join Kay in tasting wine in Italy. Kpfaltz@cstone.net

“I’m a snowmaker. I make snow. That’s what I do,” Donny said. He would rather be sitting on the beach somewhere – or on a riverbank, fishing. He makes his job sound pretty simple, but in reality, it’s a little bit more difficult than he makes it seem. “I had to learn the consistency of the snow – what was too wet, what was too dry,” he explained. Plus they have several layers of snow, all of different consistencies. First, there’s a base of thicker, hard snow. Donny puts that there so the light, fluffy, skiable snow doesn’t melt away too quickly. When Donny first started as a snowmaker at Wintergreen in 1991, things were not like they are now. Back then, they did everything by hand. “We actually could put a little more personality into it,” he said. “Now it’s all automated, it’s a lot less physical work. There’s not much art too it. Back then … you could take a little more pride in it because you had to work so hard just to get it right.”

12 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JANUARY 2010

Now, if there are any changes to make or problems to fix, Donny or one of the four other snowmakers, just calls down to the compressor room where a few people in front of computers make some adjustments. But just because the job is a bit more computerized, that doesn’t mean it’s a piece of cake for the snowmakers like Donny. During ski season, he works 12-hour days, seven days a week. He gets a little bit of free time during the warmer months (to pursue his fishing hobby) but being a snowmaker is a year-round job. And for all his work, Donny doesn’t even ski anymore. “I’m a single father raising three kids on my own. I can’t afford to get hurt,” he said. Donny and his three children, ages 19, 18 and 10, live in Roseland. And even though they spend most of the time dad has off in Nags Head or Kitty Hawk – anywhere warm with a beach – Donny wouldn’t move for anything. “I like the county lifestyle. It’s nice and mellow and quiet,” he said of the place he’s lived since he was 10 years old. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else than where I live for the world.” NCL

a new taste The Smiths have been at Afton Mountain Vineyards for almost eight months now. In those months, they’ve learned a lot about wine making, a lot about the wine business, quite a bit about social networking and advertising, and, most recently, they’ve learned a lot about renovating a winery. It’s been exhausting, but in a good way. “I mean, there are mornings when [my husband] Tony and I, we’re standing out on the deck with our cups of coffee going, ‘Do you believe this is where we live? This is the most awesome place in the world,’” said Afton Mountain owner Elizabeth Smith. And it’s getting even more awesome. The tasting room at Afton Mountain is getting a bit of a face lift and a little bit of a relocation, too. It’s not going far, though, just down the hill. “This is such a beautiful site,”

said Elizabeth. “We’ve told everybody that, yes, it’s pretty up there, but it’s even prettier down here with the lake, the view.” Plus, they needed some extra room – the old tasting room tended to get a bit crowded, especially on nice fall weekends. The new space will also provide a great place for weddings and special events. There’s an area for a nice, outdoor ceremony and a tentable pad of grass for a small- to medium-sized reception. The Smiths have also built into the new tasting room a few bridal suites where the bride and groom can prepare on the big day. For those who loved the original tasting room, though, have no fears, it will still be around. The “Vintage” Tasting room will be available for smaller private events and for occasions when the larger, new tasting room is in use. NCL

More than 30 Nelson County families struggling economically during this recession ate a wonderful Christmas Dinner thanks to their friends and neighbors. Unity in Community, a community-based outreached ministry that has put together Christmas baskets since its inception two years ago, will be providing local families with a basket full of food and small gifts to make this year’s holiday just a little bit brighter. “Our goal is to help those less fortunate than ourselves,” said the group’s founder, Delores (DeeDee) Green. “I believe working together we can be a part of a solution for a better tomorrow for our whole community.” DeeDee worked together in 2007 with the 14 Tye River Valley Churches to start Unity in Community as an outreach “referral agency” to help struggling Nelson County families. Unity in Community works closely with other groups and agencies to help county residents get the help they need – the organization doesn’t always have the money or assistance to dole out directly. “We can offer support, we can offer assistance and direction when approached by someone who has a need,” she said. “Some people just don’t know where to go, they may feel overwhelmed. They can contact Unity and Community and we try to assist them.” Unity in Community is always looking for new members and church representatives, DeeDee said the organization would not be able to work in the community as it does without help. “Unity in Community would not be possible without the love and dedication that our members give and the love and benevolence of the churches,” she said. “Together, we make it happen.” NCL

A summary of real estate credentials, designations, and certifications

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions, but few of us actually attain them. The average number of times that the same New Year’s resolution is made is ten. Either the resolution was finally achieved, or once and for all abandoned. Perhaps more important aspirations evolve, such as selling a house in tough economic times. If you plan to buy or sell a home this year, set realistic goals and milestones and align yourself with “enabling” people. When interviewing an agent, ask for educational credentials. While this is not a comprehensive list, here is an explanation of a few certifications and designations that may help you decide which agent can best help you to attain your goals. GRI, Graduate Realtor Institute; GRI is a professional designation recognized nationwide as the standard for real estate professionalism and knowledge. It involves intense study, covering many special aspects of real estate such as residential marketing,

cost basis, appreciation methods, investment real estate, construction, real estate tax concepts, exchanges, capital gains, and various types of mortgage programs. CRS, Certified Residential Specialist; CRS is the symbol of excellence in residential real estate. This real estate designation is awarded to experienced realtors who complete advanced training in listing and selling. It provides systems and strategies that can boost productivity and effectiveness in listing, selling, pricing, technology, and marketing. ABR, Accredited Buyer Representation; this is “The Benchmark of Excellence in Buyer Representation.” Designees receive service training that is geared toward the buyer’s best interest. The course covers agency, service delivery, marketing and promotion, and negotiation and risk management. SRES, Senior Real Estate Specialist; course participants are edu-

cated about senior specific lifestyles so they can learn how to meet the special needs of maturing Americans when selling, buying, relocating, or refinancing residential or investment properties. e-PRO, National Association of Realtors Approved Internet Certification; the e-PRO Certification Program is specifically designed to keep agents on top of technology changes and help them thrive in the world of online real estate. It promotes competence in technology and marketing. Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource Certification; 3rd quarter 2009 stats indicate that 1 in every 196 households will be impacted by foreclosure (nationwide: 1 in every 136). SFR designees are the recognized experts in distressed property transactions. They can counsel sellers on how to avoid foreclosure, alternatives to foreclosure, and short sale qualifications. In addition, designees can navigate buyers through the

delays, aggravations, and red tape of a distressed property purchase. QSC, Quality Service Certification; this certification is for sales professionals willing to be held to a standard, which requires accountability, reliability and consistency - the ongoing delivery of quality service on each transaction. Certification helps service professionals to deliver their best by completing the training program, passing an exam, signing a commitment, and participating in a client-based survey process. “If you do what you have always done, you always get what you always got.” Hire an agent willing to learn and adapt to market changes. Best of luck with your 2010 goals and resolutions! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. warstories

A doctor in Chichi Jima STORY by JENNIE TAL

Gene, who is originally from the Boston area but now lives in Stoney Creek, was a doctor during the war. He was asked to stay in Japan after the war had ended to take part in a trial. “Everybody had gone home except me,” he remembered. “I wrote it up, stayed over in Guam putting everything together in a document.” The trial was conducted primarily in Korean, so Gene said that with all the translations going on (Japanese to Korean to English and back again), he had plenty of time to write everything down verbatim. His journal, in addition to the official Naval copy, was used to put together all the facts of Chichi Jima. During the war, it came to the attention of the U.S. Navy that several American flyers had disappeared on or around the Japanese island of Chichi Jima, but were never reported by the Japanese military. Gene believes he was assigned to the trial because the major in charge thought there might be some medical autopsies needed. He turned out to be right. “We eventually found out that [the Japanese] had killed them all and cannibalized some of them,” said Gene, who’s memories, photographs and writings were recently featured in a non-fiction book called Sorties Into Hell – The Hidden War on Chichi Jima by Chester Hearn. Gene said that original copies of his journal and many of the photographs he took while in Japan are now owned by the National Archives. He said that the author of the book found him about four years ago. “That’s easy to do on the Internet,” he said. “He’s a very good man.” Gene said that Chester Hearn has written several stories about the Navy and WWII, but he hasn’t been the only one to contact Gene about his experiences on Chichi Jima. “I’ve had contact from a man in Australia about Chichi Jima [who believes his grandfather was there] and I had a man at Osaka University in Japan contact me and wants to talk to me about Chichi Jima,” said Gene. He came back from the war and accomplished a great deal throughout his lifetime. He worked as a urologist on staff at the Cleveland Clinic until 1964 where he performed one of the very first successful kidney transplants. After his time there, he joined with some friends and created a large urologic group in Norfolk that became part of the new medical school. He bought his first property in Wintergreen in 1974 and when he retired in 1984, he continued working in medicine investigating the quality of work done by hospitals for Virginia Medicare.

TOMMY STAFFORD

In the spring of 1946, when most American soldiers were returning from the European and Pacific battlefields of World War II, Gene Poutasse stayed there.

“And I’ve been a professional woodworker since 1980,” said Gene, who makes interesting little boxes in his Wintergreen shop. But he never really forgot about his time in Chichi Jima – although he said it’s not as difficult to remember as one might think and he’s glad Chester Hearn decided to write a book about it. “It’s not hard, I think about them all the time,” he said, noting that he has read through his journal several times as well. “It runs through my mind, I experience what we learned, how we did it. [Chester is] interested in that sort of thing and found that [the story of Chichi Jima] was an unwritten chapter that needed.” NCL

Prayer flags flutter at the Serenity Ridge Retreat Center. It is believed that the blessings printed on the prayer flags are carried into the world by the wind.

“So, I’m a monk and my job is … to practice meditation and to help people – people who might be sick or [have] some problem or struggle,” said the jovial monk who just moved to the United States and started learning English four years ago. “I talk to them and do the ceremony and the rituals. Many people come to Serenity Ridge and they talk about their problems … The world is full of problems, but ourselves have to have happiness” The Serenity Ridge Retreat Center is part of the Ligmincha Institute, a nonprofit organization started in 1992 by Geshe Tenzin Wangyai Rinpoche. “As construction, renovations and landscaping have continued on the property, the contributions of labor by sangha members and the blessing of the land by visiting masters are seen and deeply felt in the serene beauty of the building and land,” reads the Web site for the retreat center. Geshe (which is a level of study similar to a PhD) Tenzin Rinpoche moved to Charlottesville in 1992 after falling in love with the city while on a visit from Rice University in Houston, TX where he performed research with grant and scholarship money. “I fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains,” he said. He researched, and continues to research, for scholarly publications about the history and ancient texts of Bon Buddhism, but he also has published several more popular books. “It means more accessible mediation books,” he said. Bon Buddhism is an ancient form of Tibetan Buddhism – the country’s oldest spiritual tradition. “It includes teachings and practices applicable to all parts of life, including our relationship with the elemental qualities of nature; our ethical and moral behavior; the development of love, compassion, joy and equanimity; and Bon’s highest teachings of the “Great Perfection,” dzogchen,” according to Ligmincha’s Web site.

Geshe Tenzin Wangyai Rinpoche started Ligmincha Institute in 1992. It is a nonprofit organization which runs the Serenity Ridge Retreat Center near Faber.

Bon, which is more than 17,000 years old, is older than Buddha himself. Rinpoche and Lhari-la met several years ago at the monastery in Nepal where Lhari-la was teaching art. “He has an international community of meditation centers,” said Lhari-la about Rinpoche. “So he sent me [an] invitation letter and he invited me to come to Mexico in 2006.” Rinpoche wanted Lhari-la, a talented artist, to paint the inside of a Stupa (a dome-shaped shrine) built by the Ligmincha Institute in 2006. After a year in Mexico, Lhari-la came here to Nelson, near where Rinpoche lives with his wife and son in Charlottesville. More than 15 years after moving to Virginia, Rinpoche knows that this is the place for him and for the headquarters of Ligmincha. “I think basically Serenity Ridge is the place where we are trying to work with nature and trying to work with the environment and trying to create a space that is very much peaceful,” said the Tibetan monk who spent most of his childhood in India. “People come from around the country and around the world to learn and grow [here]. It’s very selfhealing and [a place of] self-discovery, while at the same time, it’s a place this ancient knowledge can be preserved. It’s really a home base for people from all over the world in this tradition.” NCL

STORY by AARON LEE PHOTOGRAPHY by KIM RAFF

Every morning Marcel McNicoll stands at the edge of a field behind his Afton home and takes a picture of Humpback Mountain. That view, that mountain, are two of his favorite things about moving to Nelson County this year. As McNicoll faces the mountain each morning, he stands with his back to the built-in-1840 house that he and his wife Danielle Savard left Silver Spring, MD to open up as the county’s newest bed and breakfast, Le Bleu Ridge, which hosted its first guests in October. “It was a bit crazy of us to open up a business in the middle of a recession,” McNicoll said. But he and Savard looked for years – in places like Puerto Rico and along the Chesapeake Bay – to find a place like the one the Quebec natives now own next door to the Flying Fox Winery along Virginia 151. (It was only by chance, while vacationing in the Shenandoah Valley, that they came through Nelson and got hooked.) The couple said they are taking the business, like their lives these days, slow. Savard, who is studying for a master’s degree in health and nutrition education, wants to make Le Bleu Ridge a center for “good healthy food.” Or what she called, “tasty healthy.” Part of her passion for turning people on to healthy eating comes from being diagnosed a decade ago with Type-II diabetes. “At the beginning, I didn’t know anything and I was scared,” Savard said. That diagnosis prompted her to lose weight and change the way she eats, she said. And it has prompted interest from people looking for a place that can cater to a diabetic diet. “I realized that we needed to experiment [with different foods],” she said. “You need to try things that make you feel better.” And her attention to dietary detail can be found in three-course breakfasts she prepares for guests where fruit is always served and the portions are not picture-menu-breakfast-joint overwhelming that can leave behind a sluggish feeling in its wake. No, these portions filling, diverse and the right size. On top of being all-natural or organic. During a recent visit breakfast included crepes – one of Savard’s specialties. With a renovation of the house planned for the spring, the couple is currently accepting guests into a room in the main house and into the historic cottage that sits between their house and the Flying Fox. In both places, guests will find organic linens and bedding to sleep on that face plenty of windows that have views of Humpback Mountain ... and, if they’re up early enough, possibly a look at the guy who keeps taking its picture. NCL

Marcel McNicoll and Danielle Savard, orginally from Quebec, Canada, purchased The Page House during the summer of 2009 and opened Le Bleu Ridge Bed and Breakfast. Part of what makes Le Bleu Ridge unique is that Savard is focusing on cooking local, organic and gluten free meals on site. JANUARY 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 31

How to use an AllĂŠe A good way to draw attention and focus to a specific area of a landscape design is to use straight lines. Adding an allĂŠe to a landscape adds a particularly striking feature that you and your guests will enjoy while wandering through your gardens. An allĂŠe is a straight garden-walk defined by trees or hedges that leads to an eye catching focal point. There are several options for using an allĂŠe. To create an allĂŠe, start with a circular area 16 feet in diameter. Choose three small trees of the same species, such as Japanese Snowbell, and frame the area just outside the circle at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. The 12 o’clock space will be the entrance to the circle or outdoor room you are creating. Next, choose an evergreen shrub, such as boxwood, that will get no taller than 4 feet. Space five of these shrubs just in front of the three trees in the semi-circle formed from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock. These shrubs provide a backdrop to the focal point. The approach to this circular area is where the allĂŠe comes into play. Plant two lines of trees to form a ‘tunneled’ pathway to the 12 o’clock entrance. Some nice tree options are Crape Myrtles if you are going for deciduous or Cryptomeria if you would prefer evergreen. (If you are having trouble envisioning this, think of a lollypop – the allĂŠe is the ‘stick’ and the circular outdoor room is the ‘candy’.) Next add a central hardscape such as a patio or water feature inside your circular room as a focal point. The effect will be a stunning view down the allĂŠe to your focal point of choice. You can finish with seasonal color. A second option is to use the wall of a structure, such as a house or shed or even a high wall by itself, as one

of the lead-in lines of the allÊe. By using the wall of a structure for one line of the allÊe and a planting for the second line, an equally appealing design can be accomplished. As with the above option, an ending focal point is imperative. Begin by forming a circular area as done above in the first example. However, this time start at the end of your structure or wall. Plant your first tree about 7 feet away and at a 45 degree angle off the corner of your structure wall for your 3 o’clock spot or 9 o’clock spot depending on which side of the structure you are working. Then plant the other two in their respective 6 o’clock and 9 or 3 o’clock spots. (If you are having trouble envisioning this, we are doing the exact same thing as above yet this time we are using a structure as one of the tree lines so you have to form your circle at the end of the structure.) Once your circle is outlined, plant evergreen shrubs of your choice to fill in the circle and make a more secluded nook. Next pick the tree variety you would like to plant to form the second line in the allÊe, parallel to the wall, to form your tunnel. Now, because you are using a structure and the two lines of this allÊe are vastly different, you also need to pick another shrub variety to add to both sides in order to give them a similar character. These shrubs will be planted, equally spaced, against your structure. A sister to these shrubs will be planted opposite, intermittent with the trees. To finish your allÊe, place a hardscape such as a bench or bird bath in the center of your circle to provide a focal point and capture attention. Be creative in your choice of trees and shrubs and the location that they are planted to get the maximum effect of an allÊe in your landscape. Happy New Year!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My daughter brought home a note from the school nurse warning about Reye’s Syndrome. What is this all about? With cold and flu season upon us it is a good time to be reminded about this rare but serious condition. You probably remember being told not to give children aspirin or aspirin containing products. This is because of Reye’s Syndrome. Reye’s Syndrome affects all of the body’s organs but is most harmful to the brain and liver. The disorder commonly occurs during recovery from a viral infection. An acute increase in pressure in the brain develops and massive accumulations of fat occur in the liver and other organs. Symptoms may include persistent vomiting, listlessness, confusion, irritability, seizures and loss of consciousness. There is no cure for Reye’s Syndrome and the treatment is directed towards decreasing the pressure in the brain and limiting damage to other organs. Recovery from Reye’s Syndrome is variable and the outcome is determined by the amount of brain damage that occurs.

Aspirin is the major preventable risk factor for Reye’s Syndrome, although it is not known how aspirin triggers the illness. It is recommended that people under the age of 19 years not use aspirin containing products. Several over the counter medications contain aspirin, or salicylates, and it is important that you read the labels of medications that your children use. You might be surprised by some of them! Reye’s Syndrome is a rare but very serious condition that is associated with a viral illness and aspirin use. During this cold and flu season be sure that you are using caution when treating your sick children. Avoid aspirin and aspirin containing medications. If you are unsure if a medication is safe to use ask your pharmacist or call your physician. More information can be found at www.reyessyndrome.org. Mindfulness in the New Year Call it what you will but as one year ends and a new one starts, we do tend to take stock of things in our lives. New Year’s resolutions. Goal setting. The 2010 Agenda. Getting a fresh start. It can be a time of reflection and a time where we put things into perspective. It can also be a daunting task as we may have the tendency to want to “do it all.” As someone who used to try to do it all (with perfection), with two young children, a small business and some volunteer work, I realized, during my daughter’s first year of life, that it is a completely unrealistic goal to get it all done. Accepting that realization and knowing I am not a failure because of it was a huge process and it didn’t happen overnight. What helped me in that process? Something called mindfulness. Mindfulness is described as many things but essentially it is attending to the moment at hand. That could mean giving someone your full attention when they are talking to you.

It could mean that we don’t try to multi –task so much but take pleasure and focus on one task at a time. It could mean that we pay attention to the aches in our body and address them. It could mean that we attend and acknowledge any emotions and feelings that we are having in a particular moment without self criticism. Mindfulness could also just mean taking a moment to sit and enjoy a beautiful day. Why is it so important? Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can improve outcomes for people suffering from ailments such as heart disease, anxiety or panic attacks, stress, chronic pain, cancer, HIV/AIDS, headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, menopause and weight management. In any health issue, there is a link between our emotional state and our physical state. How do you get started? Set aside 10 minutes for yourself everyday. Sit or lie comfortably. Become aware of your breath and breathe naturally. Attempt to clear your mind of all of your “To Do Lists” , worries or concerns.

This can be very hard to do at first but do not get frustrated as it takes some practice. Other tools are to write down your thoughts each day; keep a journal. Some folks learn mindfulness techniques in Yoga or Meditation

classes which can be helpful. Give it a try and give yourself some time and you will notice a difference in yourself and how you respond to others and to stress. Have a lovely New Year!

STORY by JENNIE TAL

This New Year’s Eve, there might be a few more partiers out and about thanks to Mountain Valley Taxi, a new taxi service in Wintergreen. Allen Lee recently realized that Nelson County was home to only one taxi service located in Lovingston – quite a haul from the mountain. And the guy who runs that one doesn’t work at night. So Allen saw a need to be filled – something he’s been doing a lot of lately. “I keep looking for niches that are not being filled by some other business on the mountain,” he said. In addition to the taxi service, Allen runs Smokey’s Black Bear Café in the Wintergreen Real Estate Office building. After a long career as a CPA and another one as a real estate agent, Allen moved up to Wintergreen to escape the monotony of office life. “And before I knew it, all my friends were here,” he said. “And I love the weather and I love the mountains.” So he stayed. He worked for eight years at Devil’s Grill at Wintergreen Resort before

deciding to open a place of his own this July, which happened in a very roundabout way. After he and a friend started touring Virginia historic sites within an hour’s drive, he realized that Nelson County could benefit from a tourism service, too. He approached the Wintergreen Real Estate office to see if they would be interested in working with him to start Virginia Adventure Tours. But while he was there, he discovered the empty café in the office and knew he could bring it back to life. What started as a pretty sparse, basic menu now includes North Carolina BBQ, sandwiches and Brunswick Stew – there’s something for everyone at Smokey’s – even free wifi – and Allen runs Mountain Valley Taxi and Virginia Adventure Tours (which he hopes to really start focusing on next summer) right out of the same building. He’s been pretty busy lately, but it’s been worth it. He, so far, has been able to do it all. “If I have a little bit of notice,” he said, “I can do anything.” NCL

snowday

The snow that fell over Nelson County Friday evening December 18, through Saturday December 19, 2009 was one for the record books.

Tractor-trailers jackknifed on highways. Motorists either spent the night in their cars or inched their way home. One mom carried her toddler on her back up a steep snowy driveway.

If you were at home, that was a good place to be. Depending on where we sunk the yard stick, we got anywhere from 18 inches to 2 feet of snow in Greenfield.

36 NELSON COUNTY LIFE JANUARY 2010

Kelly Kahle, who lives next door to Rockfish Presbyterian Church, lost a green house in the storm. The snow accumulation you see here on Rt. 151 was only the beginning.

The Lloyds on Horseshoe Mountain woke up to more than 2 feet of snow.

Stranded motorist along Rt. 151 at Rockfish Presbyterian.

Joanie’s dog is getting around better than her car.

Joanie Saunders sent in this picture of her horses from her farm just south of Lovingston.
