from thepublishers If you turn your head ever so slightly, that old knotty pine kitchen island collecting dust in the basement will look like a chicken coop. Yes, we’re back to the chickens. Adam’s flock. I honestly don’t think we’d be so into the chicken thing again if it hadn’t been for that basement brainstorm. New coops are quite pricey and Mrs. Dameron’s old kitchen island is free. True, we’ll have to build on to it a little but a big part of me just wants to be able to say that our chickens lay eggs in our kitchen island. As with any project we consider undertaking, we study it to death. Clearly, we are not raising chickens because it’s a money saver. However, how nice would it be to have fresh eggs in your backyard and “harvest” the chickens in the fall so that you have plenty of meat for the winter? Two feet of snow has a way of rearranging the way you look at your food supply. At least it did for us. Though we’ll be tempted to name our chickens, I know we shouldn’t. So we’ll do just the opposite. Here’s what we won’t be naming them: Anne Boleyn George Boleyn Thomas Cromwell

You can tell we’ve been Netflixing The Tudors. Instead, if we are to name the chickens at all, we should consider their fate. If you turn your head ever so slightly, that big chicken flapping in the dust looks like a Cordon Bleu to me. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Paradoxically Speaking Munch on foie gras, slosh back wine, slather butter on baguettes and watch the pounds shed off and your heart pump better than ever. You’ve heard of this, with a few variations, but equaling to the same in the end whereby the French eat and drink as they please remaining healthy and slender. The French Paradox. Over the past decades Americans have come up with varying guesses why this is so (the French walk more, their portions are smaller, the water, the air) and various French paradox derivatives to promote health and longevity (Resveratrol). But neither Resveratrol nor the French paradox has been proven, so the guessing is still left to us. Many customers, especially when looking for “headache-free wines,” will tell me they can drink wine in Europe and feel great but not so in the U.S. Is it that the European wines don’t have sulfites? No, sulfites are a byproduct of the process and only a few wines are made without them. Is it because they put preservatives in the wines to ship to

the U.S.? No. Then what is it? Apart from the fact that you and your husband, (significant other, dog, fill in the blank) are on holiday and very happy? I think it’s this: Even as fast food is becoming more prevalent in France and three-hour lunches are no longer the norm, the Europeans still view food and wine as not only a part of life but a way of life. There is still the joy of shopping daily for a meal a mere few hours away. (Can we see how this might be different from driving to Sam’s Club and stocking up on boxed, frozen and canned goods for the next month or in anticipation of the next big snow?) There is the ritual and tradition of preparing: real food, fresh food which may have come in from the country that same morning. There is the sitting down and sharing of it with family and friends. But so too do we Americans do all this, therefore where does the difference lie? Perhaps the use of Resveratrol gives us a first clue. While we are looking to food and wine to promote health and longevity and thus make us happy, the French look to food and wine for happiness, thus

live longer because they are happy. Neither olive oil nor garlic (Mediterranean diet) nor wine should be used as a means to an end (for then that end fails to succeed) but as ends in themselves. Because they sustain us, food and wine should be treated with reverence, something born easily when growing one’s own vegetables or stomping one’s own grapes. Château Gaudou, Cahors – From the South West region of France (where people often live well into their 100s), Cahors is called “the black wine” so dark and dense is it. But not to worry, this blend of Merlot, Malbec and Tannat is tannic, yet rich, smoky and silken with ripe blackberry aromas. The highest proportion of polyphenols (heart-protecting antioxidants) are found in the Tannat grape (…only a column-writing geek American would say such a thing; the French would never think that way.) Pair with strong cheeses, duck and stews. $12.99

But just because caboose owners are cooler doesn’t mean they have to let the world know it. They can be humble too, and let the caboose do most of the talking. Kind of like John Pfaltz and his friends do with the red Pennsylvania Railroad caboose they’ve restored in their last four years of free time.

“If I had any idea about what it was going to involve, I probably wouldn’t have done it,” Pfaltz, a retired University of Virginia professor and father of Basic Necessities’ founder Kay Pfaltz, said.

FEBRUARY 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 13

John Pfaltz fixes coffee on a working coal stove inside the restored 1941 Pennsylvania Railroad Caboose. Pfaltz worked to purchase the caboose and restore it with the help of a group of people. The caboose has become an unofficial meeting place for the group.

But he doesn’t mean that. There was satisfaction in Pfaltz’s voice recently as he thumbed through pictures of the caboose when it was first parked on an abandoned bend of track - not far across Nelson’s northern border into Albemarle County - that Pfaltz leases from Red Hill Quarry for $10 a year. It’s those pictures that show the caboose’s transformation from a heap of weathered steal skin and chipped-paint guts into summer-camp cozy. Pfaltz and a friend spotted the caboose in 2005 while traveling in Pennsylvania. He later found the caboose for sale online, bought for $8,000 and moved it on its own wheels to Albemarle. From there the caboose has, in several cases, made friends of strangers from people who heard about

the restoration and offered up a combined 600 hours of expertise and sweat that, among other things, has rehabbed the air-brakes, replaced rotted flooring and painted the car into place where on a mild day in December six men sipped coffee by the caboose’s coal stove. People like Fred Terry who lives in Nelson County and is one of only a few who worked on the caboose restoration who actually worked for a railroad, Pfaltz said. Tom Benedetto is VP of Virginia Electronic Components in Charlottesville and equates visiting the caboose to that of “an old friend.” “The first day you’re here, you just kind of fall in love with it,” Bennedetto, who lives nearby, said. “Some days I’ll come over here and bring my lunch and just sit.”

Sit and watch as trains pass on the same Norfolk Southern rails that also weave through Nelson County.

Travis Koshko, chief meteorologist for CBS19 stumbled on the caboose while wandering around the county with a camera when he was new to the area a couple of years ago. A Pennsylvania native, he thought, “What is a Pennsylvania Railroad caboose doing in the middle of the woods in Central Virginia?” And so he wandered over when he saw Pfaltz working. “It was definitely a neat find,” Koshko, who has volunteered time to the project that last April became certified to run on any railroad tracks in the country. Pfaltz is hoping to hitch it to a passing train this summer and take it to a festival. A trip Pfaltz would like to make with the caboose. Although, “They ride rough,” he said. Well, yeah, but it’ still cool. NCL

[ this month’s question ]

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring flowers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn. Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views! Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color. This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows. The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a filter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window film blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare. The wonderful thing about window film is that it still

allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot about your majestic views. When window film is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass. The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window films, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the film will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window films with a lifetime warranty. 3M window films have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. 3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry. Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window films is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented films that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window films significantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction. So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window films is so beautiful you won’t even notice them. Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window film better than anyone in the area. dogtale The Dog Who Came in from the Cold

Are there any compassion hearts out there who could help a man and a dog? This very sweet and vulnerable black and white dog was left behind his mobile home on Thanksgiving Day when his owner died. His situation only came to the attention of animal rescuers after the New Year (after the big snow and weeks of freezing temperatures). It turns out that a man living in the neighboring trailer had taken pity on the dog and fed him. This man had fallen on hard times and was out of work with no phone or electricity. So it appears that the man who had the least did the most. One good turn deserves another. If you can find it in your heart to foster a dog until a loving forever home can be found, call - 1-1 or - 1-9 9 . – Kay Pfaltz

A 2009 year-end market summary

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Knock on wood, seriously, knock on wood… we may finally be there! Yes, it is with guarded optimism that I report that we may have arrived. According to the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR), we may have already been there. Based on the sales figures for the past two years, the market was at its lowest point between July 2008 and June 2009. Here is an overview of what happened in 2009 in the Charlottesville area real estate market with particular emphasis on Nelson County. Homes Sold; There were 2,730 homes sold in the Charlottesville area in 2009, which was down by 261 (8.7%) from 2008. Nelson experienced a reduction of 12% with 139 homes sold in 2009 compared to 158 in 2008. 65% of the homes were sold in the 3rd and 4th quarters which could be indicative of the market strengthening, and also, of first time home buyers scrambling to get a home before

the anticipated Nov 30 tax credit expiration. (Of course we now know that this tax credit has been expanded and extended into 2010.) Median Sales Price; The median sales price suggests that Nelson home values have decreased. However, it may also reflect an increase in homes sold in the lower price ranges. Many properties that sold could be termed a “deal” or a “steal”. A “deal” property would have been aggressively priced within the market driven parameters, while a “steal”, often a distressed property such as a foreclosure or short sale, would most likely have been priced below the market for a quick sale. The median home price of attached homes in the Charlottesville area declined by $20,823 or 7.8% from last year. (Median Sales Prices in 2009: Albemarle 285,000; Charlottesville 246,750; Fluvanna 201,978; Greene 245,000; Louisa 209,900; Nelson 278,500 -down 7.2% from 2008).

When it comes to real estate, the choice is obvious. Call Marlo! Assoc. Broker 434.996.3525 Email: Marlo@InsistOnThatGirl.com Web: InsistOnThatGirl.com Market Data: HomeValueMarketReport.com

Insist on that girl!

Price Per Square Foot (Finished); These figures are also indicative of

the reduction in home values. All areas showed a decrease in the average price per square foot. Nelson County, thanks to the large number of resort properties, has historically led the way in price per square foot. However, this year it tied with Charlottesville. If you factored out the resort properties, the sq ft price would have been even lower. (Average price per finished sq ft in 2009: Area average 143; Albemarle 152; Charlottesville 171; Fluvanna 120; Greene 128; Louisa 114; Nelson 171 which is down from 192 in 2008, and 209 in 2007.) With no crystal ball in these hands, I can just hope, and plan, for a better 2010! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

72 Acres of Opportunity

Don’t get snowed …

Marlo G. Allen

Inventory of Homes for Sale & Days on Market (DOM); The basics of supply and demand remind us that high inventories equate to lower prices. The good news is that the Charlottesville area market may be strengthening as the inventory of homes for sale has been slowly declining. However, inventory is still high. In a balanced market the area should have 2,000-2,500 homes and we currently have 2,877 homes on the market as compared to 3,086 at this time last year. The fact that the DOM has stabilized, combined with a decrease in inventory, may indicate a positive change in the market. In 2009 the average DOM was 120 compared to 119 in 2008. Average DOM in Nelson significantly dropped from 154 in 2008 to 135 in 2009. This too could be indicative of quickly moving “deals and steals” inventory.

This is your chance to own 72 acres of privacy with a 4 acre pond and a bold creek. Make it your farm, your place of recreation, your place to get away, your place to call home! The property has a nearly 3,000 sq ft, well-constructed, home that has been meticulously maintained; the one level, open flow design, boasts cathedral ceilings in the living room, two wood burning fireplaces, hardwood and ceramic tile floors, gourmet kitchen with large pantry, custom cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms, 4 or 5 bedrooms in addition to a second family/rec room and a study, finished basement, 2 car garage, workshop, covered front porch and back deck, all with magnificent mountain views. The acreage is gently rolling with nearly 5 acres of four board fencing for horses or livestock. The property is partly cleared and was once pastured; a sizeable amount could easily be converted back to pasture again. The wooded areas have a good mix of pines and hardwoods with meandering trails throughout for horseback riding, ATVs, or hiking. Don’t miss this opportunity to not just have a great home, but also a remarkable piece of land. Invest in your future; own this home on 72 acres for about the same price as a resort home on less than an acre.

helpinghaiti You may remember a story we ran in the August 2008 issue regarding Marlo Allen’s recent mission trip to Port Au Prince. The trip was organized by Haiti Outreach Ministries, an organization that sponsors several churches and schools in the Caribbean nation. Shortly after the earthquake hit January 12, Marlo was one of several area HOM volunteers who received an email from Leon Dorleans, a Haitian pastor who oversees four of the churches HOM sponsors:

Our experienced CPAs will assist in maximizing your tax deductions and provide suggestions for planning for 2010. For a free initial consultation, call our office today!

Located on Beech Grove Road, across from Wintergreen Winery

... Our church compounds (Cite Soleil and Blanchard) are being used as places of refuge, away from the danger of any houses and trees that could fall on the people. Thank God for the soccer field in C/S as well as the one in Blanchard. Both being used as camping grounds for the people in the community. Some of you might remember Boselor, known to some of you as Bosie , he was found died (sic) yesterday inside a class room with several of the students where he used to go to school. Another college student from Blanchard church was also found dead in a class room in Port-au-Prince. I heard of couple more from Cite Soleil church but

I’ve been able to confirm that information yet. Expect to hear more about from me later on today. The total people that have been injured and died from the quake couldn’t possibly be known by any one person or agent. I heard reports anywhere from 50,000 - 100,000. I don’t know how many but I’ve seen too many dead bodies on the streets of Port - au - Prince yesterday. It was a very sad and provocative day of my life. I seriously question our government’s ability, specially their possibility and capability to help with the situation even half way decent ... Marlo, who writes the “at Home with Marlo” column in this magazine, says HOM is in the process of raising additional money to help in disaster relief efforts. The weekend volunteer ski patrol at Wintergreen Ski Resort has some new members these days, and most of them are a little shorter than you might expect. The Wintergreen Youth Ski Patrol was started four years ago for kids under the age of 15 who were interested in patrolling the slopes at the resort. Don’t expect to see them performing first aid on injured skiers, but they do just about everything else with the grown-up patrollers. “We wake up at the crack of dawn and go [to Wintergreen] and I’ll ski from like 9 in the morning to 4,” said 13-year-old Julia Kilmer, a secondyear youth patroller from Troutville. In addition to working on their skiing or snowboarding skills, Julia and the others – there are about 20 youth patrollers between the ages of 11 and 15 – go through different first aid programs

taught by Meggan Monaghan and Cathy Ballard. While they’re not allowed to practice their new skills at Wintergreen, they can use the CPR and other first aid skills they learn at home if their friends or family members ever get hurt. They’ve also taken trips in ambulances and will occasionally help the grown-up patrollers open the slopes up in the morning. “Meggan is the best instructor I’ve really ever had,” said Julia of her young instructor who is also a volunteer patroller. She said Meggan and Cathy have a lot to teach the youngsters. “I learned CPR and I learned the Heimlich maneuver.” Julia, who attends Roanoke Valley Christian School and plays soccer and volleyball when she’s not skiing, said she’s worlds ahead of her friends when it comes to safety and first aid. She said some of them don’t even know what some of the skills she’s learning are all about. Fifteen-year-old Nikolai Majorin is one of the oldest members of the youth patrol. The Albemarle High School freshman will be eligible next year to join the volunteer patrol squad at Wintergreen and, like many of his peers, he’s ready for the challenge. NCL

The Dowdy’s original home was heavily damaged in a tornado May 8, 2008.

30 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2009

Sharen said her family was lucky, though, because even the house was destroyed, everyone inside was unharmed and her neighbors have been wonderful. “There were a lot of people in the community who donated things to us,” she said. “You find out just how warm this community is and just how they pull together when something happens.” She and her husband and son have also been fortunate to have relatives living close by – just across the street, actually – that were willing to let them stay in the basement. “I was very grateful to have a place to go, but I’ll tell ya, I’m glad to be above ground soon!” said Sharen the day her new modular home arrived on two trucks January 12. The new three-story home, which will be named Blackburn Wood after Sharen and Ed’s mothers, is called the Shore Front and it’s made by a Rocky Mount company called Mod-U-Kraf. When the Dowdy’s started thinking about building a new home, they contacted Nelson County local Mike Crandal who set them up with the new place. The old house was burned as a training exercise for local fire departments and the new house is on the same site but a little farther up the hill to allow for a better view. Plus, it’s quite a bit bigger. “We have three children and one grandchild and we always wanted a place for the kids to come home and visit at Christmas,” said Sharen. “Something where everyone could be comfortable but not something too big to handle.” Sharen, like the optimist she is, said the tornado was a blessing in disguise for her family. “We always intended to build, we just didn’t realize it would come about this way,” she said. “It really was something like the Phoenix coming out of the ashes. Yea, there was this freak thing that happened, but it was the catalyst to make something better happen.” NCL

Winter Lights Just because the winter sun sets at 5:00 p.m. doesn’t mean we always get to drop everything and settle in to our homes for the night as soon as it gets dark. Many of us are just getting off of work as the sun sets and arriving home to a landscape bathed in darkness. An unlit landscape often offers hazards that even the most agile cannot avoid. It doesn’t have to be that way – and you won’t go broke or need a PhD to light up. With the kits that are now available at the box stores, you can now illuminate your landscape for around $500 – highlighting hardscapes, lining walks and up-lighting trees in the hours found in just one weekend. The package that you are in search of is LOW voltage lighting products. Low voltage means that you do not have to bury the line 18 inches in the ground for fear of electrocution since the power unit has reduced the overall charge of your line that will power your lights. However, when you hear low voltage, don’t yawn and think ‘solar’ quality in regards to output – in my opinion, low voltage dominates today’s solar lights with bright LED and other lighting options. When choosing your lights think carefully about what you are truly trying to accomplish. Light up a walk or parking area? Highlight a statue in a garden alle (from last month’s article in NCL)? Up-light a unique tree? Whatever you may want to do, the resources are there – you just need to stop, strategize and be creative. In my opinion, it is better to be strategic and light less than carpet bomb your entire landscape with illumination. Remember, for each light that you pick up, you need to add up the watts. The end result of all of your watts for your lights will determine your power needs in your transformer. The power unit or transformer

that you will need is approximately 5X5X10 inches, attaches to your wall and plugs into a 110 power outlet. The units come rated in watts. Take your sum total of watts from your lights and match it with a transformer that has a BIGGER number than your sum – that is your transformer. Obviously err to the higher side since long runs of electric lines can decrease the ultimate power to the lights. The line that leaves this unit has just 2 leads or wires therefore there is no trick to which wire goes to which terminal – they both work the exact same way. The same is therefore true once you attach your light to the other end – both wires are the same regarding charge (I told you this was easy). The wire will come in 25, 50 and 100 feet sections so measure your distances carefully before purchasing and then add 25% to your final number as you will invariably either miscalculate or forget about going around a tree or sidewalk. Even though they show the unit with the wire above ground, I still bury it to around 3 inches which is just outside the range of both a landscape edger and lawn aerator – not to mention pets, children or lawnmowers. The lights are connected using a pseudo, alligator clip-like thing that has two pieces that sandwich the main line between them and then locks into place (watch out for your fingers as these are sharp and indiscriminant). Each light comes with its own hook up so don’t worry about finding these clips. Once you have connected all of your lights, plug in the unit, switch to on and VOILA, landscape lighting for the homeowner. The transformer does have the ability to light for specific hours of the day or to run continuous – just read the manual and follow the instructions. Until our next article, happy gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine 2010 Weight Loss, Part 1 Hello and happy 2010! For the next several columns I write, I am going to focus on one of the most important health issues I can think of: Overweight America. Two out of three Americans weigh too much. Consider that the average male 5’10” should weigh about 155 pounds, and the average woman 5’5” should weigh about 130. Look around, how many people do you see that weigh these kind of numbers? Not a lot, and that is a problem. Why is it a problem? Because we don’t look as good as we should? Yes, that is one reason often thought of, but worse than that is this: being overweight can cause high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer (of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, breast, colon, rectum, and prostate), depression, gall bladder disease, irregular periods, infertility, heart disease, liver disease, arthritis, skin problems, sleep apnea, stroke, and diabetes to name a few things. Or, put another way it causes BADNESS!! The above seems like a long list of impersonal words, but in my office every day I see real Nelson County people who have disease caused at

least in part by being overweight. Many times per month I diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes. We send people out of the office in the rescue squad who are having a heart attack more often than anyone would like. High blood pressure is commonplace. Joint pain and sleep problems are running rampant and a person’s frustration over the weight they have gained is something I am witness to at least 15 times per day. The medical issues around too much weight can seem overwhelming. But, the good news is that weight can be lost. It is not easy, but I am privileged in my work to also see people who have successfully made big changes to lose weight and end up healthier for it. In the coming months I will explore how one goes about losing weight. Maybe here in Nelson we can help slim down Overweight America and live healthier and happier lives. Getting A Tune Up Recently, a long time client of mine returned for physical therapy stating she had some aches in her hip and knee but it wasn’t “that painful”. She said she wasn’t as hurt as some of the folks I treat and felt bad about coming to therapy. After further evaluation, we discovered she couldn’t perform certain tasks that she could do the year before. I told her it was good that she came in now instead of waiting for her physical function to decline further. It is important to consider the caring for yourself body as you consider performing the maintenance work on your car. Truthfully, individuals treat their cars better than themselves. Cars receive regular oil changes, oil and air filters changed, fluid refills, tires rotated and balanced, alignment performed, timing belt changed, annual tune ups and even detailing without a second thought. It is standard care for the automobile. Why? Because you want it to perform well and to avoid a breakdown. How about similar care for your body? Don’t you want your body to perform well?

Don’t you wish to avoid illness? Study after study has demonstrated that preventative health care costs less and reduces risk for a number of preventable diseases. In addition to regular physicals, you should include regular fitness assessments of your physical function, endurance, body chemistry, strength and flexibility. Periodic sessions with your personal trainer are recommended to advance your exercise program. If you never change your fitness program, your body accommodates to it and the strength and endurance won’t improve. So, take the time to put the right fuel in your body and to do the preventive maintenance so you’ll avoid a breakdown and a towing to the hospital. Agnes F. Revolution a backyard

STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

Chances are, you’ve been to a festival sometime in the last couple years and chances are, you heard some music. But when was the last time you were able to take the kids to a festival where you knew they’d enjoy themselves and also come back with a little bit more knowledge about their history and the world around them? This May, you’ll be able to do just that when you head out to the Backyard Revolution hosted by Devils Backbone Brewery right here in Nelson County. Adrienne Young, a musician who lives in Wingina, has been passionate about music, history and local food for quite some time and is finally able to put everything together. Backyard Revolution debuted last summer, making a number of appearances in Nelson and in Albemarle at larger events like the Brew Ridge Trail Music Festival and the Crozet Music Festival. This year, in conjunction with the SurLie Foundation, a 501(c)3, the Backyard Revolution will take place May 8 and 9 as a standalone festival. The SurLie foundation, also started

by Adrienne, is a local nonprofit organization whose goal is to build pride in the heritage of central Virginia, increase interest in self-sustainability, and support small businesses in the local economy. Adrienne, who’s first CD was nominated for a Grammy nomination and who will be putting out her next CD this summer, has been working as a musician her whole life and is also the spokesperson for the national Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaigns, a program of the Food Routes Network. Together with her fiancé, Luke Ramsey, a historic preservationist, she hopes to make this festival a fun, lasting experience for attendees. “I’m hoping that somehow through this reconnecting with our history in a way that’s tangible, whether it’s making the soap or weaving the yarn or butchering the hog, there’s somehow going to be a transference of acceptance and the understanding that we did the best we could and that really our job is just to always take what we’ve got, learn from what worked and what didn’t and try to make the best choices for the future.” NCL

Adrienne Young works on a radio promotion with Brad Savage at 106.1 the Corner in Charlottesville. She has a twice monthly radio show called “Backyard Revolution” that helps promote a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Young’s interest in rural living and sustainable agriculture has led her to start a festival also called Backyard Revolution, which aims to promote Virginia’s rural culture and help show people how to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

SOLD! – Antique Pie Safe ~ Punched Tins We found this piesafe in Nelson County Virginia. It probably dates from the first half of the 1800s. The drawer was hand dovetailed & hand chamfered. All of the poplar boards were hand planed. Has 6 tins in front that were hand punched. Looks like a wagon wheel design. Was probably painted & then refinished long ago. Has remnants of old paint. Looks like the back 2 feet were reinforced but this isn’t an issue to us especially since it is a primitive/country piece. Posted By: Covesville Stores 22931 - Covesville 434-295-9496 $395.00
