from thepublishers It is amazing to think that this issue marks our fifth anniversary of publishing this priceless rag. 61 issues and hundreds of pages later, we find ourselves neither in heaven nor in hell. Instead, it seems we are firmly implanted in a state of pregatory. Be careful what you wish for when you dream of a White Christmas. You might get 5 feet of it spread out over the entire season. And when you’re snowed in, there’s not much do to but be merry and hold hands. We saw Jerky at the lawyer’s office the other day presumably drafting letters of emancipation. As the senior beagle, I don’t think he ever dreamed he’d be living his twilight years being chased around by a kid wielding a wooden tennis racket. But Adam sure does love his “Dog dog.” Adam needs another playmate anyway, one without a tail and an inclination to shed. If this baby comes with a set of mag wheels, Adam will be thrilled. Just about anything that spins grabs his attention these days. After emptying out the dolly we use to wheel around magazines, Tommy turned it upset down for Adam. He spun those things for at least half an hour. There

are some things Fisher Price can’t make. They also can’t make old men with stretchy wrinkles. Schuyler native Earl Hamner, Jr. wrote us a little note congratulating us on our fifth anniversary. basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Pairing Wine With Possum Over the course of a week I am asked a variety of questions concerning wine and wine pairing, but one of the most frequent, not to mention colorful, questions I’m asked is, “Which wine is best for possum?” Now I always give the question the same amount of reflection whether the person asking just drove up in a rusted pick-up or a Porsche SUV. I look them in the eye and ask, “How big is your possum?” Because you see, the size of the possum will affect which wine I’ll select trying to match the strength and body of the wine with the body of the possum. When pairing wine, it’s not so much a question of red versus white as it is body. Keeping aesthetics in mind, the novice wine taster (in thinking he’s making the right pairing when equating “fur color” with the color of the wine) might think a white wine best. But possums can also be dark gray or even brown, therefore a red wine is probably most suitable. As always when deciding whether red or white, temperature and weather will affect the choice, but fortunately

for us in Virginia, possums (whose correct name is actually opossum) do not really hibernate, and abound throughout the year. Season, therefore, should not matter. The winter months, however, can be hard on these arboreal marsupials, so keep a steady supply of red wine on hand. They will appreciate it. Possums are omnivores, so you’ll have no trouble finding a menu to suit them, which brings us back to wine. The last question I ask is: “Now are you sure your possum likes wine?” Some have to be trained to it. Our bestselling possum wines: Don Ramon – From Spain where possums are rare, but their mystique still lingers. This is great value wine, loaded with ripe, juicy fruit which might remind your possum of the bounty days of summer scavenging. $8.99. The modern styles of Garnacha in Spain are continuously being perceived worldwide as wines of extraordinary

good quality. The wine is fruity, juicy and nice depth and ripe tannins, but has elegance and lightness. Tres Ojos means “three eyes” and is fitting for our possum friends who could benefit from a third eye as they can be somewhat blind by day. $8.99 La Vieille Ferme – Smooth, light and simply delicious. This is an great bargain. No need to break out the Château Margaux for the possums next door. They’re happy with whatever you serve. They eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, live in the present taking each day as it comes and don’t care about vintages, labels, expensive or snob-appeal bottles of wine. $8.99. Happy April’s Fool. Support your local growers, buy local and organic, eat mostly a plant-based diet washed down with lots of wine and serve to avoid possums in the road. Possums have families too.

“You think of it being Canada, Vermont, up in New England,” said Melissa Hutchison of the Wintergreen Nature Foundation who, along with Josh Palumbo, decided to experiment with the Sugar Maples at Wintergreen. “A lot of people don’t know we have Sugar Maple this far south.”

But Melissa, who has done a lot of docent work taking people to see taps up north but never worked through the whole maple sugaring process, said that at with Wintergreen’s high elevation, making syrup from the maples is completely possible. Melissa and her team tapped the Maples February 25th and collected sap for 13 days until March 10, the day of the Maple Sugaring Wednesday Exploratory program. They got about 30 gallons of sap out of six taps. The day of the program, the maple sugaring experimental team began boiling the sap to make it into maple syrup. While they boiled – the process took about 8 hours – Melissa led a group of brave hikers through the snow to see the taps in a little grove of trees. Eventually, the 30 gallons of sap were boiled down into about a pint of syrup that everyone enjoyed on top of a midday pancake meal. They syrup they made wasn’t exactly the same as you can get from the store (give them a break, it was their first time!) but many attendees said it was definitely tasty. continued on page 15

continued from page 13 “A little bit thinner than you’d find at the store, but comparable,” said Karen Omohundro of Richmond, who attended the workshop with her husband, Jeff, and their two sons, Jack (age 7) and Kevin (age 6) who were on spring break from school. The syrup was good, but the Omohundros’ favorite part was getting to the maple trees and seeing the sap actually running out. Tom Marker and his wife, Barbara, who live in Wintergreen and are Wintergreen Nature Foundation volunteers, also enjoyed the trip. “It was a delightful event,” said Tom. “It was nicely bound with hiking, being outdoors, learning, and good eating.” Melissa said the experiment was a success and the Foundation hopes to repeat it next year. “Hopefully,” she said, “In a bigger and better format!” NCL

When Sybil and Robert Martino of Stoney Creek lost their son in 2005, they could have done a lot of things. But what they decided to do was much more than was expected of them. When Michael Martinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chopper was shot down near Ramadi in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Sybil said her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fellow Marines were wonderful to her and her family. They wanted to do something in return. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When my son was serving, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d send him packages all the time and I knew how much it meant to him,â&#x20AC;? said Sybil.Â â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d hear that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d get packages from people he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know and how much it meant to him. And oftentimes, lots of times, there are Marines out there that for whatever reason, they are not getting packages from home.â&#x20AC;? So Sybil, her family, her friends, and now her neighbors are going to change that. Last year, Sybil had a list of 70 servicemen and women that she sent care packages to over the holidays, but she realized that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re fighting all the time and wanted to continue sending packages. Now her list has expanded and Sybil needs help finding people to make and send care packages for about half of the 248 Marines on her list. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to get packages out to all of them,â&#x20AC;? she said. The students of both elementary schools, plus the middle and high schools are working together with their PTAs to promote active and healthy lifestyles while raising money for the PTA and Rockfish River Elementary playground campaign. Of course, the Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backbone Brewing Company brew master was only kidding. Really, he was just excited about reaching the hundred mark on New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day. And that hundredth brew â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a pilsner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; was really good, at least Jason thought so. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because really thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my favorite type of beer,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was going to something strong, blatantly celebratory, but I decided to do something for myself.â&#x20AC;? Jason, who has been brewing for almost 14 years, has been really happy with both the beer that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been brewing at Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backbone and the people who have been drinking it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not to mention the state-ofthe-art equipment heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been using. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really happy with what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m producing and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really glad I get a lot of good feedback, too, from the guests,â&#x20AC;? he said. If you are like me, you probably couldn’t be happier this year to be out with the snow and in with the daffodils. Spring is a favorite time of year for the housing market. With the April showers, and May flowers come more buyers… and, oh yes, more sellers. If you are planning to sell your home this spring, you need to differentiate your home. How? Consider price, marketing, and condition. Set a market-driven price, hire an agent who will aggressively market your home, and make sure that your home is in tip-top shape. Here are a few showcasing tips that can help your home spring ahead of the competition. Prepare for staging. Before staging, a house must first be cleaned, painted, and repaired as needed. It must also be de-cluttered. Remove books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear the countertops. Depersonalize! Pack away anything that makes the house “yours” instead

of “theirs”. Take down family photos and put away the family heirlooms and collectibles. Strip to the bare essentials. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Create positive focal points. Take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms. Kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets.Thoroughly clean the entire kitchen and then add

the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and stage a bath with decorative towels, soaps, candles, spa baskets, flowers, and floral pictures to set the ambiance of the room. Don’t forget the outside. Outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal. Room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics such as silk, lamb’s wool, or satin. Arrange fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or indoors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser.

Strive for cheerful and bright. Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing all window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses. Make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. In today’s market of short sales and foreclosures, much of the competition could be considered a “deal” or a “steal”. In order to be competitive, you must have “appeal”!

continued from page 25 Cleared your schedule for April 24th yet? You might want to – that’s the night of Trees On Fire’s pre-release party at the Jefferson Theatre in Charlottesville. Rob Mezzanotte of Faber, the band’s guitarist, vocalist and saxophonist, said that his group definitely has a unique sound.

“You could say rock,” he said. “Like a rock/ pop/electronica. And we definitely have a pretty good funk kind of thing to us.” So there’s something for everyone and this local group only plays once every few months in the Charlottesville area so now’s the time to hear them. The show is a celebration of their first fulllength record which will be officially released May 4 (but there will be copies available at the April 24 show). Rob and three of his band mates – Justin “Espo” Esposito (violin, keyboard, vocals, guitar), Blake Hunter (guitar, vocals) and Brian Wahl (bass guitar) – all went to school together

in Boston to study classical music. Blake, who is from the area, talked up central Virginia so much they all decide to come down. That’s when they decided to start working with Paul Rosner (drums), another local, to start doing something new with their musical talents. “It was an organic process,” said Rob. “We just did what needed to happen and it took on a life of its own, really.” Even the band’s naming process was organic. It just so happened that after several months of trying to figure out a name for the group, three band members saw trees on fire in one day – it’s hard to miss something like that. And due to the organic nature of the group, their first album is entitled “Organica.” Produced

partly in Charlottesville and partly in Louisiana, the album features 14 tracks written collaboratively by the group. “Me and Blake bring tunes to the table that we’ve thought up, ideas and songs, and then we all get together and record and try to write all the parts and arrange it,” said Rob. He said that the songs on the album are up for interpretation, but he thinks people from all walks of life with various tastes will enjoy the music. “It’s definitely a brand new sound that I’ve never heard before and I think people will appreciate [it],” he said. “Every time we play the music, wherever we go, people kind of freak out. It’s got a good general appeal.” NCL

continued from page 29 At 45, Susan thinks she might be the oldest woman on the team, it takes up a lot of time some weeks and sometimes she gets some bumps and bruises, but she loves the roller derby nonetheless. The Charlottesville Derby Dames was started in February of 2006 as the Roller Derby initiative when a few Charlottesville-area girls decided they want to form a team. “But it was probably November 2008 before things really got ‘rolling,’ so to speak,” said Susan, who joined in May of 2008. The movie Whip It starring Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page of Juno fame came out last year and the Charlottesville Derby Dames saw a surge in membership then, but interest in roller derby has really been growing for several years now – and Susan says for good reason. “It’s a sport that’s just so different from any other sport,” she said. “Only women do it, although there are co-ed teams.

Contemporary roller derby, an all women’s sport (although co-ed leagues are starting to crop up), came into existence early last decade. Founded in California, roller derby is now popular throughout the United States, and also abroad. Derby participants pick their names and register them internationally so Susan is the only Vixen DeBrawl in the world. Roller derby takes place on an oval track and the competitions are called bouts. Each team has five people playing at a time – four blockers and a jammer. The goal is to get your team’s jammer to pass as many other people as possible and the blockers do what you might expect – they block. “There’s a lot of knocking people down,” said Susan. Although there are rules that say you can’t elbow anyone or do anything too vicious. “It’s really a great sport because girls of all sizes can do it,” she said, adding that it’s a great way to get in shape. Plus, women from all backgrounds are getting into roller derby. The Charlottesville Derby Dames, who practice at a warehouse in Charlottesville as well as the National Guard Armory, have members who are nurses and hospice workers. There’s a nurse and a UVA

fine arts librarian. On the team, there are six women from Nelson County, but Susan is the only one who participates in bouts at this time. The others, all fairly new, are all still considered “fresh meat.” Erika Mitchell of Faber, Naomi Annabelle of Afton, Becky Birnbaum of Afton, April Winsheimer of Nellysford and Siporah Winsheimer of Roseland (and all the other fresh meat) still have to complete their skills tests. Required skills include the ability to fall properly, stop, hit, and skate. Derby girls have to be able to skate 20 laps in five minutes and five laps in one minute, which is pretty fast, especially for women, like Susan, who haven’t skated since junior high school. Siporah Winsheimer, the newest recruit to the Charlottesville Derby Dames hadn’t skated since she was about 17 and has only been to three practices, but loves the derby already. The day after her first practice, she said she remembers crying because her body was so sore, but that didn’t keep her away. And they’re always looking for new members. “It’s the most fun sport I’ve ever done,” said Susan. “It’s really athletic. It’s great exercise. It’s all women. Lots of friendship and camaraderie.” NCL

The Reverse Stack - Slope & Tree The recipe for an eyesore could be the following: dig a hole on a slope and plant a tree with the root ball even with the high side of the slope. Your eyesore is realized as a ‘blister’ of mulch and a high root ball emerge as a neighbor to your new tree. There is a more creative approach that not only places the tree flush with the slope, but also adds an interesting hardscape and makes for much easier watering and mulching. We call it a reverse stack and it brings out the beauty of the tree by eliminating the issues associated with planting on slopes. Note: you will need to have on hand a good supply of stones that are suitable for stacking into a small retaining wall to accomplish this project. Once you have marked the area where your tree is to be planted, dig a hole that is big enough for your tree and deep enough so that the root ball will be level with the top of the soil on the lower side of the slope. This requires a much deeper cut on the high side of the slope than is typical. Remember, the soil on the lower side of the slope that will be level with the top of the root ball is now your reference point for the elevation of the entire project found in the next step. After the hole is dug, stand below it, face up the slope and envision a perfect half moon directly above and outside the hole you have dug for the tree with the high point of the arc away from you. The arc of the half moon shape is going to be your retaining wall and therefore an additional cut must be made. Cut a perfect half circle extending approximately 2 ½ feet from the tree trunk (or center of your hole). Remember, the entire work area, the area you have cut, must be at your reference level which is the soil on the lower side of the slope - level with your root ball. The 2 ½ foot radius will

be allotted as follows: 1 foot for the stones, 18 inches for space for the root ball, for future growth and for your mulch. The arc of this half moon cut should be a 90 degree wall of dirt that you will stack your stones against. The cleaner and more circular that you can perform your cut using the tree trunk as the center of the radius, the better the finished project will look. Next, go ahead and plant your tree and fill in the around the roots with proper soil amendments and water thoroughly. Now it is time to stack some stones. Stack the stones in the half moon arc until they are as high as the undisturbed soil above your cut, but no higher. When you are finished, the wall should start low on both sides of your half circle, and gradually gain height as you approach the middle of the arc. Your stones should be flush on a vertical plane for strength and for a nice clean effect. Don’t worry about the stones being jagged on the back side (against the undisturbed soil on the high side of the arc) since this area will not be visible. Place weed fabric behind the stones to prevent soil from leaching through and then fill behind the fabric and stones with the extra material excavated from the site or your soil amendments. Gently tamp this soil so that it is nice and tight. Once your wall is built, mulch the area between the tree and the stone retaining wall and then mulch the lower slope of the tree at the same 2 ½ foot radius to form a complete circle. When done properly, a mower should be able to drive a complete circle around the area and not disturb the tree, mulch or your new wall and your neighbors will marvel at your creative genius in dealing with the rolling hills associated with Nelson County! asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine 2010 Weight Loss Part II The last time I wrote here, I reminded us of what we already knew, two thirds of America (and that includes Nelson) is overweight. That not only makes us look bad but also makes us unhealthy in lots of ways. A long time ago when I wrote here, I discussed the weight loss equation, which goes like this: eat/drink less calories + burn more calories= weight loss. This is the key to losing weight. The equation is simple, the reality of making it happen is not simple. But just because it is not easy doesn’t make it not doable. Most days in my clinic I see real people who have worked hard and lost weight. They are healthier and happier for it. In various ways they have all followed the weight loss equation. I would like to examine the equation in this and my next few columns. But, before we can even get to the equation, we have to get motivated. There is no sense in trying to follow the equation if we know we won’t. We have to get to a point where we are serious about losing weight. We

have to be willing to change. On the food intake side of the equation we have to expect to give up things we like to eat and drink. We have to be willing to be slightly hungry at times. We have to be extremely honest with ourselves about what we are eating and when. On the burning calories side, we have to recognize the limiters keeping us from being active and be willing to try to overcome them. We have to be creative to find ways we can burn calories. We have to be willing to watch less TV and otherwise make weight loss a priority. If we do these things, and lose weight, the benefits far out way the cost. Health improves. Self image improves. We gain energy and strength. We live better. In my mind that is worth getting motivated for. If you agree, then you are ready to live the weight loss equation. Expecting Too Much Too Soon It has been a long winter; a winter where we have spent more time than usual indoors. Whether it has been rain or snow, we have not been outside as much (except to hit the ski slopes and I am thankful for that). Some of the recent comments I have heard lately are: “I gained the ten pounds back!” “I don’t have as much energy.” And, “I have gotten out of the habit of exercising.” Cabin fever has struck. The loss of strength, flexibility and endurance happens very quickly especially for the older population. Unfortunately, it takes longer to regain it. In just a few days without exercise, we become sluggish and irritable without the outlet for stress and our muscles quickly move to a deconditioned state. But the beauty of the human body is that it is adaptable. When returning to exercise, remember that there is no magic pill (regardless of what you see on TV) that will make you fit. It does take discipline and commitment as does anything worthwhile. And, know that you may have to ease back into the

exercise routine. Establish the habit of exercising first; schedule exercise into your week- at least 5 days – even if it is 15- 20 minutes. Then gradually increase your time. Keep the exercise appointment with yourself. Most importantly, allow your body and behaviors time to adapt and change. Many individuals expect physical changes overnight therefore setting themselves up for failure. All the Twinkies eaten over the years and lack of exercise didn’t bring you to your current state overnight- it was a gradual process. And, conditioning is gradual process if you want lasting health and fitness as opposed to an impermanent fad diet attempt at health. Lifelong health involves life style and behavior changes. This is the difficult challenge of attaining health and wellness. Start with goal setting. Pick three goals and write them down. Post them where you will see them every morning. I recommend that one of the goals is to exercise 5 days a week. Stick to your commitment and enjoy your journey to good health.

Dear Tommy and Yvette, For some time now I have intended to welcome you to Nelson County. Now in celebration of your fifth year among us I would like to make it official. This may seem an impertinent gesture on the part of an old man who has not lived in Nelson for the last fifty years, who now makes his home on a hillside in Studio City, California, but I was born in Nelson, my heart is till there, and I hope to rest there when I die. Being aware that you transferred here from Tennessee I have made inquiries and am told that you have adapted quite well to the quaint folkways of our beloved Nelson County. I have it on good authority that there have been no major scandals such as failure to place hand over heart when mentioning Robert E. Lee, or sipping imported wine when the finest wines in the world are a stone throw from where you live. I do understand you have not quite mastered our speech patterns, that there are still traces of Tennessee when you pronounce certain words.. Time will undoubtedly take care of the problem and you all will soon speak correctly like the rest of us so you need not be embarrassed when speaking in public. The second purpose of this letter is to request that you remove me from y our subscription list. It is threatening to my well being, to my peace of mind and to my marriage. Jane announces that Nelson County Life has arrived at home when I arrive from my office at the end of the day. I rush to my room and read every word. I mention it when I arrive at the dinner table.. “Yes,” she answers, “I read it. Nice feature article, some good stuff on gardening, and some sensible information on weight loss, and good tips about health care and how to buy wine. I read the whole thing!” “Did you read the “This Old House” section I ask innocently. “Yes, there was a picture of a pretty little log cabin,” she answers. This is my opening and I pounce! “Ideal summer home!” I exclaim. “I think we should buy it! “Earl, we have a summer home,” she tells me. “It’s on bluff on the ocean at Laguna Beach with a nice beach and a view of Catalina!” “I know,” I cry, “But this one is in the mountains!” “We live on a mountain,” she reminds me. “We right on top of one of the Santa Monica Mountains!” “Yes,” I admit, “But it’s in Hollywood. Probably not a real mountain at all, probably some location left over from an old Warner Brothers movie set.” “I assure you, its very real,” she says. “I want to go home!” I declare, encouraging just the tiniest hint of a tear to appear in my eyes. Jane is a sensible woman and has dealt with this hysteria before and so she says, “Suppose I were to subscribe to a paper from my hometown of Davenport, Iowa and tried to drag you off there every time an issue arrived!” The point is made. The very idea of spending my summers in Davenport, Iowa causes me to quickly change the subject and eat my dinner. One further point. While I will not be receiving the entire copy I wonder if you would please cut out the column where you all pose with son, Adam, and send it to me. My heart is old these days and rarely skips a beat. It did one evening last November when your child, obviously a prodigy, obviously headed for a noble future, actually held out his arms to me, a stranger and allowed me to hold him! I will never forget the moment. Already a citizen of Nelson County with the typical Nelsonian traits of good looks, inbred hospitality, outgoing affection, trusting acceptance, a promising future, excellent manners and loving to be hugged.
