from thepublishers Adam has taken up with Tommy’s hair brush and we had to yank it out of his hand for the picture. But I guess there wouldn’t have been any harm. He was holding a racket in the last issue. For now Adam likes to brush his hair from back to front. We are waiting for the first time he runs that brush over a tick. I must admit, this season has brought out my inner chimp. All the pets are treated for ticks and such but that doesn’t keep them from hitching a ride on their backs every now and then. When Angelo is purring and I run my fingers over his head and find a tick, it’s like finding an Indian Head penny on the ground. I’m sure there’s an evolutionary component to this behavior as I don’t see many male chimps grooming their offspring. They say pregnancy brings out some vivid dreams. One of mine involved bunches of bananas (there again is that inner chimp) and assorted expletives. We won’t go into that. We are having to watch what we say more closely. It’s not that Adam has begun embarrassing me in grocery check-out lines just yet but he is starting to repeat many of the words we say. It’s as if he says them

once and banks them for later. Part of us thinks he is accumulating enough words in his arsenal to string together the most off-color remark at the most inappropriate time. It will probably happen when a head counter comes knocking on our door. Speaking of learning how to count, we have a DVD of old Sesame Street episodes that have been on heavy rotation lately here at the house. The guy that lifts open the red lid to reveal “two turtles” is creepy. But the bakery chef who tumbles down the stairs is hysterical: “Twoooo chocolate cream piesssss!!!!!! Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

The Art of the Picnic Alfresco dining reaches its epitome picnicking. For me there is no better setting to stimulate appetite and aesthetic sensibility than a grassy knoll overlooking vineyards‌or maybe a granite boulder jutting just above white caps on the sea, or an antique table under the shade of wisteria with the tsz-tsz-tsz of the cicadas in the background. Or perhaps just a quiet roadside beside a sunlit river here in Virginia. But before my prose turns completely purple, you get the picture and my passion for picnics. And no picnic is complete without a bottle of wine. Almost any wine can be a picnic wine, even that ’78 La Tâche, but more often picnic wines are those that are simple, complementing not only environment and temperature but your chosen fare. Chilled reds such as Gamay or whites and rosĂŠs are natural choices. Domaine du Père Caboche – from the Vaucluse, this simple wine is everything a Provençal rosĂŠ should be. Fresh notes of lemon blossom and peach are balanced by nice acidity. Because red wine quickly becomes heavy and heady on a day

warm enough to picnic, opt for a rosĂŠ which offers the body of a red with the cool acidity of a white. Pair with picnic olives, chèvres, smoked mussels and, if you can find them, sea urchins. $10.99 If seeking a white wine look no farther than the amazing biodynamic Guillemot-Michel Mâcon Villages, Quintaine – This is no ordinary, light-bodied Mâcon Villages. The commune of Quintaine has a special microclimate which allows it to make some of the finest Mâcon in the area. Pierrette and Marc Guillemot-Michel are topnotch vintners and their wine reflects it. Passion fruit, honey, lemongrass, baked apple and white peaches on the nose; the only fault this wine might have is to overshadow the food. $26.99 For the red wine drinker, lighter styles tend to work best. Therefore, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and Dolcetto are good bets. G. Descombes, Brouilly – Beaujolais has always been the quintessential picnic wine, but for those who say “yuckâ€? to Beaujolais Nouveau, there is more to the region than the fruity, frothy Nouveau. All Nouveau

is Beaujolais, but not all Beaujolais is Nouveau. There are ten “cruâ€? which tend to be the best wines produced in the region. Brouilly falls right in the middle and is therefore an ideal match with patĂŠ, saucisson and medium to full-flavored cheeses. $25.99 Organic. While we may normally think of taking inexpensive wines on picnics, no one says you can’t bring the Chablis Grand Cru you’ve been saving in the cellar. If you agree that an outdoor picnic is just about the best food and wine experience, then don’t hold back. Château Musar, 2001 – If tasted blind you’d think you were drinking an exotic, spicy Bordeaux, but Musar is Lebanese. Cabernet, Carignan, Cinsault and Grenache and, like all Serge Hochar’s wine, aged seven years in the bottle before release ensuring perfection when opened. Sit in the shade of the fig tree; sip and watch it evolve. Your picnic will become quite memorable. $48.99. Join Kay in Paris in September. Air, hotel, meals, wine, sightseeing all for $2945. We first ran a story about Nelson County’s shoefiti in Issue #25 (April 2007). In it we wrote about a Nellysford landmark, a pair of white tennis shoes hanging from a power line over Rt. 151. On March 23, 2010, we got an urgent Facebook tip from local Honey-Do handyman Chris Barksdale that the shoes had dropped. Racing into breaking news mode, Tommy Stafford hopped into the Jeep and snapped a picture of the grounded soles before an unidentified woman picked them up and took them away.

continued from page 10

Like many teenagers, Henry Davis’ car was an old, used pile of metal that got him from place to place, but unlike most kids, the car Henry, an Afton resident, drove in high school was a Model A Roadster.

12 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MARCH 2010

Henry Davis, 86, of Afton, works in the shop in his basement crafting the wooden cab and bed of the 1929 Model A Ford Huckster that he has built in his backyard over the last two years. This will be the fifth Model A Ford that he has completed by himself (opposite). A modern insurance ad lays in the back of Davis’ Huckster bed. The advertisement shows what a 1929 Model A Ford Huckster would have looked like new (below left). Last summer, after working on his 1929 Model A Ford Huckster for a year Davis had straightened and fixed several rusted parts of the car’s fenders and installed new wheel bearings. He’d also rebuilt the differential and installed the front cowl and windshield. The parts were temporarily bolted to the chassis to make sure everything fit together. (below right, courtesy of Henry Davis).

“I’ve had Model A Fords for quite a while,” said Henry, a member of the Skyline Chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America. “I just love old cars.” A lot of people in central Virginia seem to share Henry’s passion and the local club – which spans from Charlottesville to Staunton and up to Harrisonburg, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with about 60 members. The club is a chapter of the Model A Club of America as well as a division of the Model A Restores Club and is planning a huge celebration during the Summer Extravaganza the weekend after July 4 at the Ridgeview Park in Waynesboro.

In addition to a display of members’ prized vehicles, there will be a sectioned engine on display that club president Reggie Hiner hopes will spark the interests of young people. And if that doesn’t do it, he’s sure the little ones will have a lot of fun snapping a photo of themselves sitting in the driver’s seat of an antique Model A. After Henry’s first, Model As got pretty popular and he couldn’t afford another one until about 25 years ago when someone gave him an old chassis and he build a Roadster out of it. “And I’ve kept one ever since,” said the retired woodworker and industrial supervisor.

Henry Davis looks over the chassis of a Ford Model T in his yard. He says that this chassis is in better shape than the one he started with on the 1929 Model A Huckster that he has almost finished building. Davis is contemplating if he has another car in him after almost completing his fifth Ford Model A.

“I cannot afford an antique automobile, so I build them out of junk.” continued on page 14 MAY 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 13

Henry Davis walks from his shop to the 1929 Model A Ford Huckster that he has built from spare parts over the last two years. Below, Davis works on reinstalling a sticky door lock on the antique vehicle.

Henry has been a member of various chapters of the club for 20 some years – on and off – and encourages others – even young people with little knowledge of Model As to learn more about cars, like he has over the years. “I had to learn by reading books, I’m not a mechanic or anything,” said Henry, who doesn’t even have a nice garage at home. Though he’s never had been trained to work on automobiles, he’s kept at least one Model A on hand since he built his first one more than two dozen years ago. “I build one, sell it, and get the money to build another one.” Using that method, Henry has built five Model As, a Ford Mustang and a 1949 pick up truck. Right now he’s working on something called a Huckster. “It’s a pick up truck with a canopy on top,” he explained. “It has a wooden body – they used to sell produce out of it.” And starting this month, Henry hopes to put the Huckster back to good use – selling the small wooden items he makes down at the Nellsyford Farmer’s Market alongside his daughters who sell Hillside Herbs. “I’m going to use it to peddle my wares,” said Henry, who isn’t planning to sell the Huckster any time soon. “I’m going to try to keep this one as long as I can.” NCL

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 2010

This is the fifth Model A Henry Davis has built. He hopes to be done by May. He is planning to use the car to go to the Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford on Saturdays where he sells old fashioned childrens toys and hand-made dulcimers.

Henry Davis screws in the wooden strips that he made for the roof of the 1929 Model A Ford Huckster that he has built over the last two years. Davis says that almost every staqe of the restoration takes longer than he thought, as he basically is building it without plans from the parts of many different cars. Below, Davis tries to figure out why the horn on the Huckster has stopped honking.

Where’s the buyer?

athome withMarlo

Most popular home buyer resources

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Oh where, oh where, is that home buyer? Sellers can do a lot of things right and still miss the boat when it comes to attracting a buyer for their home. You can properly price the home. You can get it in pristine condition. You can even “primp and fluff” it so that any home stager would be proud. However, if you don’t get your home in front of the actual buyers, all that hard work will not necessarily generate a SOLD sign. I constantly preach the three key elements of selling a home… price, condition, and marketing. When you place the home on the “market”, make sure that you have a “marketing” plan. This is not a novel concept, yet it does not get the due diligence it needs. When selecting the right agent, don’t just hire based on relationships (family member, friend, or acquaintance), hire based on a marketing plan. If you want to get your home

in front of buyers, consider these buyer facts as reported by The 2009 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Buyer home purchase resources; Buyers use a wide variety of resources in searching for a home: 90 percent use the Internet, 87 percent rely on real estate agents, 59 percent yard signs, 46 percent attend open houses and 40 percent look at print or newspaper ads. Although buyers also use other resources, they generally start the search process online and then contact an agent. First point of contact; When asked where buyers first learned about the home that they actually purchased, 36 percent of buyers said a real estate agent; 36 percent the Internet; 12 percent from yard signs; 6 percent from a friend, neighbor or relative; 5 percent home builders; 2 percent a print or newspaper ad; 2 percent directly

from the seller; and less than 1 percent a home book or magazine. This is worth recapping. 36 percent of buyers first learned of the home that they purchased from the internet, while only a total of 3 percent of buyers first learned about their home from a print publication. Print advertising should not be ignored, but it should not be the primary focus of your agent’s marketing efforts. Most popular internet resources; Since so many buyers rely on the internet as a primary source of information, where exactly are they going online? Local multiple listing service web sites, such as Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors, were the most popular Internet resource, used by 60 percent of buyers; followed by Realtor.com and real estate company sites, each with 46 percent; real estate agent Web sites, 45 percent; other Web sites with real estate listings, 30 percent; for-saleby-owner sites, 17 percent; and local

print publication websites, 9 percent; other categories were smaller. In summary, online advertising is essential for success. The agent you hire should be able to detail how he/she is penetrating these buyer frequented web sources to ensure that your home is getting maximum exposure. Not every entry on one of these websites is the same. For example, a featured listing on Realtor.com can get 500% more exposure than a standard listing. Take the time to understand the “where, when and how’s” of your agent’s marketing plan. If you align with those who sell, you just might sell! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Local Chiropractor Offers $150.00 Worth Of His Services For Only $25.00 To Anyone Who Needs Help But Has Never Been To A Chiropractor Before (Or Has Not Been In A Long Time) Dear Friend, If you have ever thought about going to a chiropractor, but you have hesitated because you were not sure it was right for you, please read on… My name is Dr. Brian Prax and recently I decided to make a special offer to anyone in the area who is currently suffering from physical pain and would like fast, simple relief. I have agreed to “give away” (to anyone who asks for it) $150.00 worth of my services for only $25.00*. That’s right - $25.00*. I am calling it “Community Appreciation Week” and it is my way of saying “Thank You” to the people of Albemarle and Nelson counties for making my practice so successful in the 5 short years since I opened my doors. You should know that I’ll be donating 100% of that $25 to Hope Community Center. They’re a vital charity service that helps the homeless and refugees in Charlottesville. I have helped hundreds of people in the Albemarle and Nelson county area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. And now I would like to introduce even more to the many benefits that our profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you are suffering from any of the following conditions: • Migraine headaches • Lower back pain • Numbness or soreness in your arms or legs • Constant fatigue; lack of energy • Muscle spasms, sprains and strains And a whole host of other problems ranging from dizziness to ringing in the ears. Fortunately, if you are suffering from any of these problems right now, they may be relieved or eliminated by proper chiropractic care (commonly called “adjustments”). So if you have always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what it can do for you, now is the best time to do so because … For One Week Only May 17th-May 22nd 2010 $25.00* will get you all of the services I normally charge new patients $150.00 for! *(offer may not apply to Federal programs like Medicare or Medicaid)

24 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 2010

What does this offer include? Everything! You will get an in-depth consultation about your health and well-being … and a complete chiropractic exam… and a full set of computerized spinal scans that would normally cost you at least $150.00. The appointment will not take long at all. And like I said, I normally charge $150.00 for this (most of which just covers the full cost of the scans). But now, as part of this one-time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiropractic care and how it can help you eliminate the pain you are feeling. Before you come in, though, you will probably want to know a little more about me. So let me tell you some of my credentials… A BRIEF LIST OF MY QUALIFICATIONS I have been a chiropractor for over 14 years, graduating from Life Chiropractic College West in 1996. I have completed courses in industrial ergonomics, Car Accidents and I have extensive training in Sports Chiropractic – a specialty in chiropractic that focuses on sports related injuries to the spine and extremities (arms/ hands, legs/feet). I could go on, but I do not want to bore you. I just want to let you know that I am someone you can trust with your health. DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLY WORK?

I have not had a headache since the 2nd treatment about 2 months ago, and all of my other symptoms were also improved dramatically after a short period of time.” Veronica Suarez, Crozet, VA LIMITED TIME OFFER Obviously, with an offer like this, I cannot afford to do it for very long, so I picked May 17-May 22, 2010 as the dates to hold this special event. So if you would like to take me up on my offer and see what chiropractic care can do for you, all you have to do is call my office and set up an appointment for May 17 –May 22, 2010. Then, just give me a day to analyze your tests, and on the next day I will tell you what needs to be done that may help you with your problem. The number to call is: (434) 977-5433 Call anytime between the hours of 9:00 am and 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and tell the receptionist you would like to come in for the Special Introductory Examination during that week. I expect to get flooded with appointments for the Community Appreciation Week, so please call as soon as possible to assure that you do not miss out.

Absolutely! Chiropractors have helped many people where traditional treatment methods have failed. Listen to what some of my patients are saying…

Thank you very much and I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more productive life.

“. …with the help of the Prax family and staff, life is physically less painful, and I can drive longer. And for those of you who don’t like the cracking bones, the practice has all kinds of cool “toys”….I recommend anyone with bone issues, nerve or other problems go…” Vera Miller, Faber, VA

Sincerely,

“…the change was AMAZING! I felt better, had more energy, and best of all, I had no more migraines! I haven’t had one in three years. I AM A BELIEVER!” Ann F., North Garden, VA

P.S You may not have to suffer any longer. Chiropractic care could help get rid of your pain quickly and easily. And now you have no excuse not to get started, because I am going to give you over $150.00 worth of “start up” services – including a full set of computerized spinal scans for only $25.00. Also remember that I am donating all the proceeds from this week’s event to HOPE Community Center.

“…I had constant headaches and due to my car accident had neck, upper back, shoulder, forearm and wrist pain.

Don Rhodes, owner of Wine Tours of Virginia, above at right, talks to Mike and Paige Appler of Bridgport, Pennsylvania. about the Petit Manseng grape vines growing at Veritas Vineyard and Winery. The couple were taking a tour of several Nelson County wineries with Rhodes. continued from page 27 As you might guess, Don is pretty passionate about wine. And not just any wine – but Virginia wine (and beer!). “I fell in love with it years ago,” he said. “We were making good wine, people didn’t recognize it, they didn’t admit it.” Don said that despite the more than 170 wineries and vineyards in Virginia, people are still sneering at Virginia wine – even though varieties of it win international awards every year. Paige and Mike Appler of Pennsylvania took a tour with Don during an annual mini-vacation they take every April. The Applers love wine and know a lot about it – they’ve visited Napa, Europe and wineries all over the United States, but were pleasantly surprised by the wine they tasted in Virginia. Don’s tours are pretty intense and not for the winery hopper who just wants to drink a lot and have a good time. “It’s about learning about it, it’s about pairing food and wine, it’s about the people making it,” he said. “It’s not about getting schnockered.” Don, who also works at Devils Backbone Brewing Company and gives brewery tours in addition to winery tours, said that in any one of his typical tours, guests will visit two or three wineries and end up drinking the equivalent of 2-3 glasses of wine. He said that his goal is really for people to discover some wines they didn’t know about before – even if they’re experienced wine tasters. He’s been running tours since 2005 and says it’s going great – he can tell because he is already personally booked every Saturday through the end of June, although he has other guides to help him out. And after six years of giving tours, Don knows one thing for sure: he won’t stop until people start respecting the quality of the wine grown in the Commonwealth. And he’s definitely reaching that goal. “We’re just that good,” said Don. “We’re on that stage.” NCL

The Afton Christian School (ACS) is holds its annual fundraiser to benefit their small school May 29. Called the ACS Benefit Extravaganza, the event has gotten so large they had to move off premises to the Rockfish Valley Fire Department, said Head of School Lori Knight. In past years, the school (which includes grades K4 through 8 and serves about 45 students) has used funds raised through the Extravaganza to upgrade transportation, purchase new playground

shiner’sstory My name is Shiner and here is my story. On Christmas Eve 2007 my siblings and I were found by the side of the road one evening. The night was cold and wet and we were huddled one on top the other trying to stay warm and fiend off predators. Cars drove by and we nestled closer together, protecting each other. We were thin and emaciated looking more like little egrets than dogs. A car did stop and though scared we let the rescuer take us in and take us to a house with a fenced in yard. There we lived together, but I had a crooked front leg and soon became the underdog and picked on by my brothers and sisters. The tackled me until I cried out. But as much as they hurt me, I didn’t want them to leave. Yet one by one they were adopted by loving homes. I was left behind alone. I went to Almost Home, the Nelson SPCA were I was put in a room with a run. But I was very scared and couldn’t help barking at people who came by. I didn’t want anyone to touch me or take away somewhere worse. My brothers and sisters were all gone and I was alone among other scared dogs. I was told I would never find a home if I barked and taken once again to a foster home. I am happy here, but my guardian’s older dachshund has a tumor on his spine and she must spend her time and money caring for him.

and outdoor equipment and more. The new aspect of the fundraiser for this year is the cruise in car show that anyone can enter for $10. The public will vote and ACS will give out four trophies to the favorites on display. Also new this year, the school is teaming with Dominion Outdoors who will supply sporting equipment for the auction in addition to the various other items including antiques, homemade goods and electronics. The $5 entry fee for people ages 16 and up (kids are free!) allows access to all activities for the kids, plus the music and entry into the drawing for an iPod touch. So get everyone together – there’s fun to be had! NCL

If interested in fostering or adopting please call Kay Pfaltz, 434-277-9163.

Will you take me into your home forever? I am very, very loyal and lovable once I get to know you. If you take me, I will be scared of you for a week or so but if you feed me and speak gently to me, I will understand and show you great love. I will go on walks with you and do my own thing but always return. I will chase off the deer or rabbits if you have a garden. I can be loose at your house or farm without a fence because I will stay around to guard and protect you. If you are a single woman, you’ll have no fears with me around. I can act quite fierce to strangers who you’ve not okayed. I am not so good with new people but great once I get to know them. I am good with other dogs too, although I may bark at strange dogs. I am not good with cats. Sorry, just can’t help that one. I will be timid and bark at first, but you will find if you give me just a little time that I am goofy and lovable and loyal to a fault. I know how to sit, come, lie down and I’m told I’m an easy keeper. I will let you cut my toenails and brush my teeth…no big deal. In return for taking me in you will receive loyalty, protection, comic relief, joy and my unconditional love for as long as we are together. Can you open your heart and help me find a forever home? – Shiner

Success with Natives Each time I see a bulldozer preparing to excavate for a mountain home site, I try to grab my shovel and quickly remove all ferns and other flowering natives from the site before the bulldozer can destroy them. The vast majority of these refugees make it into my own personal landscape for me to enjoy for years to come. Now, after 10 years of rescue, my landscape is full of trillium, bloodroot, ferns and many other genus that are multiplying and moving throughout my landscape. So what’s the secret to success? First choose a site that only gets about 4-6 hours max of direct sunlight. Most natives are understory plants and do not need or want full sun. When choosing your area, try to find a spot that you can ‘let go’ and that is on the outskirts of your landscape or around an area that looks native like a drainage area or around the understory of some trees near a patio where you can enjoy their subtle beauty. Lack of soil prep is by far the leading reason that plants, in particular natives, do not survive and thrive. It takes more than a hole and a bucket of mulch to begin to prepare for our long hot and dry summers and cold winters. Compost, topsoil, peat moss, gypsum and organic (preferred) fertilizer are all important components of a soil stratum – in particular compost. Spading the area and then incorporating all of these amendments with a tiller is paramount in prepping a bed for native plants. In essence, you must think like Mother Nature and deliver to these compost loving plants a similar soil makeup that they live in naturally. Unfortunately for woodland plants,

hard or softwood mulch is NOT a component that Mother Nature delivers and you do not want to use it in this particular landscape area. In my landscape mulch has been shown to inhibit future seed germination and reduce the growth from creeping stolons or rhizomes (modified roots). Woodland plants spread naturally in their native environments and will do so in your landscape the conditions are right. Watering natives, and all plants for that matter, during planting, after they are planted and during the first year is critical for success. Before planting make sure that all plants are moist. Once the hole is dug and the plant is placed in the hole, water again to soak both the soil and the plant. Finally, after the hole is covered in, water a third time to soak the surrounding soil that is around the plant. During the first 90 days, the critical 90 as it is referred, water is the most essential thing that you can add to the plant – more important than synthetic food and any minor element that the makers of Miracle grow would have you believe. The reason is simple and can be found in the soil prepping process and in nature – natives are naturally adept to high compost areas and if you prep your soil correctly to mimic their natural environments, they do not need the TLC that non-natives require (like Proven Winners for example). After the first year your plants should be well established and require little attention. Where additional amendments are necessary, buy organic compost and broadcast it around the plants about 1 inch deep. Again, this is to ensure that the plants will reseed and multiply as they would in nature. Until our next article, enjoy the weather!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, What is a living will? Should I have one? Advanced medical directives are very important documents that all adults should have. These are instructions that specify what actions should be taken for your health in the event that you are no longer able to make decisions. Living wills and medical powers of attorney are forms of advanced medical directives. Living wills have nothing to do with which of your children gets your fine china or your hunting rifles once you are gone. Living wills can be very broad or can be very specific. Often they simply state that if your death is imminent that you would not want to delay your dying. The living will may list very specific medical care you do not want to have, such as blood transfusions. Or it may specifically state what medical care you do want, such as comfort measures like pain control. Because circumstances change over your life, a living will may need to be changed as you age. What you would want done as a 40 year old may be very different that

when you are 80 years old. Medical power of attorney gives the right of making health care decisions on your behalf to someone whom you chose. This allows for ‘real time’ decisions to be made by the appointed person. It is very important for the person to know what your wishes are so they can make decisions that you would want. It is very important to think about the future. Consider having an advanced medical directive and encourage your parents or adult children to have one also. Talk to your family members and loved ones about what you want and do not want to have done, and have it written in an appropriate document. Most medical offices or hospitals have forms available. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about this and provide him with a copy of your advanced medical directive to be included in your medical chart. Warming Up It is another beautiful Nelson County spring and the weekend warrior in us wakes up in these times. It is fun to get outside to garden, walk or play sports. Depending on your current physical fitness level, your body may have no problem jumping back into more physical activity or your body may experience aches and pains as you increase your activity level. One way to prepare your muscles and joints for activity is to take a few minutes to warm the tissues. The “warm up” is a 10-15 minute period of time prior to your main physical activity. The goal is to prepare the muscles, joints, heart and lungs that more stressful physical activity (beyond sitting) is on the way. For example, if you are going to walk or cycle for exercise, take the first 10 15 minutes of that walk or cycle nice and easy then progress to a faster walk or more strenuous cycle. This period of time is crucial to warm the muscles and prepare the heart for more physical activity. It also helps

to reduce musculoskeletal injuries. If you are going to play a sport such as tennis or golf, take 10-15 minutes to walk and stretch before hitting tennis or golf balls. It is important to warm the muscle prior to stretching. Even marching in place helps to gently increase your heart rate and warm the tissues prior to stretching. Often we are a rush to get to our activity and the warm up is forgotten. Too often, that is when an injury occurs. The other factor to remember is gradually work your way back into your activity level. In other words, don’t play three hours of tennis tomorrow after a winter without playing tennis. Give your body time to become conditioned and prepare it to prevent injuries. Enjoy and play! Agnes F.
