If I were playing it safe, I’d paint the room Celery Sticks GLG15. But I’m not much for gender neutral color schemes especially when much of the house already looks like dying grass. So Morning Walk VN58 it is. Barber Shop 06-10. That is not a paint color, but it is a milestone in Adam’s young life. Aside from his mother’s pregnant mommy brain forgetting to bring money to a place of business, Adam’s first professional hair cut went very well. Lollipops are wonderful things. So are ATM machines, When it was all said and done, my boy looked like a little man. He could run for office with that haircut. Or lend money. Not that I don’t like his new coif, but I am eager to see the wild curlies behind his ears come back in the fall. The kind of hair that votes politicians out of office. Or that borrows money from the piggy bank in his room. If it is true that the baby’s room is to be painted Morning Walk VN58,

then it should be interesting to see what her hair ends up being like. If it’s anything like Adam’s, she’ll have it down to her knees by age 2 if I leave it be. As for names, don’t even try to get it out of us. That’s the one secret we are keeping to ourselves. However, since her due date is predicted to be the day on or before her brother’s birthday, we can speculate on nicknames. Maybe we should paint the room Party Crasher 09-28. Enjoy! Tasting in Italy: The Art of Living Well In May, despite missed flights due to volcanic ash and soggy spring rains, a group of mostly Nelson county wine tasters traversed Italy from Lake Garda to Tuscany, to Umbria and on to the Amalfi Coast. As Elizabeth Gilbert pointed out, the Italians have perfected Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;arte dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;arrangiarsi, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the art of making something out of nothing,â&#x20AC;? and equally, Il bel far niente, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the beauty of doing nothing.â&#x20AC;? Here there is a mentality of life, and it concerns largely a farming way of life that, with its respect for animal, land and tradition, encompasses the Slow Food Movement (begun in Italy), and yet so much more. High points of the trip included a nine-course dinner at organic farm and winery Pratello on Lake Garda the night we finally arrived, dazed and jetlagged; a day spent with Elena Panaeleoni and Giulio Armani of La Stoppa winery in Piacenza. What was supposed to be a quick two-hour visit turned into an entire day as we began in the vineyard, where Elenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for her land and eighty-year old vines was contagious. We were joined by Rocco, Tinto and Bianca, vineyard

dogs, and visited the cellar to meet winemaker Giulio. Then the tasting. But what a tasting. With Grana Padano cheese, salamis, prosciutto, herb and seed-coated chevres. And when Jonathan Hohman asked Elena to disclose her favorite vintage, an aged bottle arrived from the cellar. A high point for me involved not fermented grape juice, but mud-caked pigs. Filippo of Tierre di Siena, also responded to the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enthusiasm during a prosciutto tasting and drove us to visit the sagacious souls behind this Italian delicacy. He joined us at his friend Silviaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wine shop in San Gimignano, where we tasted wines from her estate, La Marronaia, another organic producer, respecting the land which has been farmed for centuries. But when Jonathan tried his question, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is your favorite vintage?â&#x20AC;? Silviaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s answer, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The next one!â&#x20AC;? put an end to tasting older vintages. On the bus there was discussion about the merits of one wine over another as well as private recipes concerning the proper preparation of chicken. The Imperial Hotel Tramontano in Sorrento (birthplace of Torquato Tasso and home briefly to writers such

as Geothe, Byron, Shelly, de Musset, Lamartine, Keats, Leopardi and Ibsen) provided a majestic backdrop, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, for many a balcony wine tasting. But as nice as this grand old luxury hotel was, in the end it was the sense of camaraderie that developed amongst the group that made the trip; it was the light clouds drifting above and days of gentle sunshine after rain; it was simple, fresh local food...and oh yes, it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt that all was washed down with great, local, organic wine. Richard Christy uses a hatchet to rough out the shape of a decoy at his studio in Montebello (opposite). Some of the patterns that he uses to begin to cut out the basic shapes of the birds hang from his table. Richard uses a rasp to refine the body of a miniature swan decoy (right). This decoy is about one-fourth the size of a real swan. He later marks the spot where he will carve nostrils on the beak. For feathers on a yellowleg shorebird decoy, Richard uses a fine brush to paint them.

And that’s how his second career as a decoy carver got started. While he was still working as a chef in Sandbridge, Virginia (just south of his hometown of Virginia Beach), he lived and worked seaside between the Atlantic Ocean and Buck Island Bay where he met people from families who had been carving decoys since the turn of the century. “These were all people that were fisherman and when they weren’t fishing, they became hunting guys,” said Richard. “And back in the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s, that area was prolific in the waterfowl industry.” So he started going to shows and trying to learn how to carve decoys. But it turns out that a lot of the “old timers” were pretty secretive when it came to their methods. “But I convinced them to pass their trade onto youth,” said Richard. “All of them became my mentors and they all had their own styles of carving and their way of doing things. And I just took my ability of carving ice and took it to the wood side.” Now, decades later, Richard is retired from his work as an executive chef and living in Montebello. There, he carves decoys in his cabin studio (he also rents out the cabin) which is on the planned Virginia Artisan Trail. Recent technologies have changed hunting and the art of decoy-construction, so Richard’s decoys, while usable in hunting, are more often purchased to be decorative pieces in peoples’ homes. And even more interestingly, he ages them after they’re completed so they look like the old-style decoys. “As we’ve progressed in technology, still today I carve mine by old fashioned methods,” said Richard. “They’re all going to be irregular and have their own expressions and attitudes.” NCL

You already missed their “jam session,” but the Nelson County Master Gardeners want to invite you to the rest of their food preservations classes. Sandy Gallagher, the president of the Nelson County Master Gardeners, first got in touch with people at the Virginia Cooperative Extension when she realized that it was becoming more and more common for locals to be growing their own produce or participating in a cooperative extension. “It was natural for the transition to canning to come along,” said Sandy, who added that folks young and old have shown an interest in this ageold activity. “I’m an old lady and my mother used to do it when I was a kid. In the olden days, we did a lot of canning. It was something I began to think of was sort of a lost art.” But it’s found now! Tracy Nedza, a family and consumer science agent for the Central Virginia Cooperative Extension said that even though canning has been done throughout history as part of family farms and communities, canning has come a long way.

“People used to do things the way their grandmothers did them and their grandmothers before,” said Tracy. “But now food safety is a science and there are certain processes that are needed to keep food safe and keep the quality good.” Sandy said she noticed the same kinds of things. Her mother used to seal jars with wax but now the jars used in canning are sealed using controlled temperatures. And your grandmother’s pressurizer is a thing of the past. Sandy said her mother’s pressure cooker used to explode all the time, getting green beans all in her hair. “But now they’ve built these things so that they’re foolproof and safe,” she said. Tracy added that in addition to saving money, families today are using canning as a way to control what they’re eating. Plus, it’s a great way to spend some quality time together or make great homemade gifts. After the first workshop, held on a Saturday, everyone took home a jar of strawberry kiwi jam. Sandy’s jar was empty by Monday morning. NCL

She’s been around horses all her life, and she adopted the first horse she ever had. But when she adopted Hope a couple years ago, she realized she needed to do more. “I just sort of felt like doing it one at a time wasn’t enough anymore,” said Maya who operates Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue, Inc. “I really wanted to be able to help more horses on a larger scale.”

The nonprofit foster-based rescue organization has placed several horses and even a donkey over the last couple years, but they’ve taken in a couple of residents as well, including Prince and Lucy. “With the economy these days, there are a lot more horses that are needing help,” explained Maya. “We take in horses that are abused or abandoned or neglected. We also take in horses [when] their owners can’t afford them any more.” Their first fundraiser – an open house and yard sale at Rodes Farm – is July 17 starting at about 8 a.m.

Tough economic times have made it increasingly more difficult for prospective home purchasers to obtain financing. While there are many silver bullets that can kill a loan, the number one reason for initial loan denial is poor credit. If you are struggling to get financing for a home purchase, be persistent and align with the right professionals, so that you can be guided down the path that just might lead to your new front door. Here are a few tips to help understand and boost your credit score! Credit overview; a FICO score is a grade on your overall credit worthiness. Scores range from 300 to 850. Interpreting scores: 800 and up – flawless (13% of population); 720-799 – excellent (27% of population); 680-719 – good/great; 620-679 – average/fair; 580-619 – poor credit;

500-579 – bad credit; Below 500 – start rebuilding! Factors in your score: 35% – Payment history; 30% – Amounts owed; 15% – Length of credit history; 10% – New type of credit; 10% – Types of credit used. Get a copy of your credit report; you can’t begin to improve your score until you know what exactly it is you need to tackle. To get a free copy of your credit report visit www. AnnualCreditReport.com. Clean up your credit report; sometimes things slip through the cracks and something that you paid off or previously cleared up may still be showing on your credit report. Remove the card from your wallet and resist the temptation to use it. Don’t max out the card OR close

Saving 10% on a department store purchase is not worth the additional hit on your credit. Get current on delinquent accounts; an estimated 35% of your credit score is based on payment history. Getting current on delinquent accounts can make a huge difference in your score. Pay off your debts; make a GetOut-Of-Debt Plan. Instead of growing your debt, the goal is to reduce it. Seek professional assistance and stick with the plan! Contact creditors; if you are in a difficult financial situation, call your

creditor to ask for assistance. Be cautious; some hardship programs may help relieve the current financial burden, but can negatively impact your credit (not making your payments can too!). Call your Realtor; if you are trying to repair credit so that you can make a home purchase, call your real estate agent. Rest assured that you are not the first client with credit issues. The agent should have a little black book of resources and can refer you to a loan officer or financial professional that can help you reach your goal. David owns Madhops, a hopyard in Massies Mill. A hopyard, like a vineyard for grapes, is a place where hops is grown before it is used to brew beer. Three years ago, David, a carpenter in residential construction by day, heard about a national shortage in hops. The larger companies, like InBev who now owns Budweiser all had contracts with large hops growers so their products weren’t in danger, but David was concerned about all the local and craft brewers that depend on hops for their products nowadays. “The craft brewing industry is just booming,” said David. “Nelson County has two breweries. Charlottesville has two. And I hear more are on the way. And because of the shortage, I decided to utilize my farmland to create more of a local product.” David used to have some farm animals, but since he came into ownership of the place in the late 1970s, he’s been using the land mostly for growing hay. He’s still cutting hay off of a lot of the land, but now one acre is devoted to growing hops of five varieties: Cascades, Willamette, Chinook, Galena and Zeus. Much like how different grapes are combined to create different flavors in wines, different varieties of hops are tossed in to create different flavors in beer. “It’s sort of like Italian cooking,” said David. “A little of this and a little of that.” He’s quick to say he’s not a brewer, but he does know a little something about the trade. And according to David, with the exception of uniquely flavored beer like orange or strawberry, the hops are what gives the beers their flavors. The other ingredients are fairly similar between brews. Three years ago, he flew to Washington state for a hops growers convention, found a distributor and bought 4,000 rhizomes (the underground plant system that grows the hops). Three years, $15,000, and a lot of hard physical labor later, he’s got a hopyard that will produce about 2,000 pounds of dried hops this year. “There’s definitely been a big learning curve,” said David, who built, with the help of his family and his one employee Donny Carter, the one acre plot of 16-foot trellises that the hops require. “But it’s been very interesting to learn a new topic. I’m 61 years old and have a tendency to do the same things so this has been a great way to learn something new.” David doesn’t have any current plans to expand his crop, which is all grown organically, but he says he could if the demand required it. He doesn’t have any ongoing contracts right now, but at a hopyard viewing last month, David met with several local brewers (including Taylor Smack of Blue Mountain Brewery and Jason Oliver from Devils Backbone Brewing Company) who David said are interested. What’s most interesting to David is the prospect of working with a local brewery to use fresh hops to brew a very unique beer. “It’s very highly valued out in the West Cost in Seattle and Portland,” he explained. “They take the hops right off the vine and brew beers with them. They are much more flavorful. It’s sort of akin to using fresh herbs in cooking versus dried.” Sounds good to us! NCL

When the weatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice, Hal Loken goes up in the air about once a week. He uses a plane to get up, but on his way down, he has no motor, no parachute, no nothinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Well heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got one thing: His glider. A glider (or a sailplane) is a type of aircraft without an engine that uses natural lift to glide (or soar) long distances at pretty high speeds. Hal, a retired aerospace engineer and a Roseland resident whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been â&#x20AC;&#x153;soaringâ&#x20AC;? since 1966, is one of about 40 members of Shenandoah Valley Soaring, a glider club that operates out of Eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nest Airport over in Waynesboro. Members recently gathered at a field in Roseland to soar into the air. Gliders get up in the air by being towed behind what glider pilots call â&#x20AC;&#x153;power planes.â&#x20AC;? Hal and a few other SVS members are licensed to fly both types of planes. Once they get up to about 3000 feet, the glider disconnects from the power plane and soars like an eagle before heading back to Earth. Visitors are always welcome at Eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nest and will often get a

ride with a pilot like Hal. Visitors are especially welcome if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in becoming glider pilots. The process can take some time, but Hal says he has students old and young. In fact, one of his students is just 12 years old! â&#x20AC;&#x153;Typically, if you get a teenager, it is amazing how fast they learn,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Especially with all the video games they play!â&#x20AC;? Becoming a glider pilot can happen one of two ways. A pilot with a conventional license can add a glider rating, but non-pilots can learn to fly gliders from scratch. There is some flight time required as well as a written test administered by the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure that everyone up in the air knows what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing. But Hal, who first started soaring with the Brown University Soaring Club in Coventry, Rhode Island by launching gliders with a winch (a contraption that uses a powerful stationary engine and some cable to launch the plane), said that all the hard work is worth it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just to be up there in the air. The music and the drinks – you can get those from anywhere at DBBC. But not the frogs. To hear those croakers, you’ve gotta sit outside. “We’ll assume people want to sit out on the front patio so they can get the direct view of the three ridges,” said Chris Trotter, DBBC

general manager. “But they all end up pointing over to the [pond]’s direction.” Daniel Gayle of ClearView Water Gardens was brought in to construct the pond when DBBC owner Steve Crandall decided to put one in. He said that as with all his ponds, the one at Devils Backbone is a great way to give a little bit of an aesthetic touch that isn’t too hard to maintain. And while Daniel knows the benefits of his water gardens, he was a bit sur-

prised by how popular this particular pond has become. “I didn’t expect it to be as big of a deal as it is to the point where people are fishing in it,” said Daniel who’s been creating water gardens for about a decade. “I’ve heard stories of kids jumping in there, people swimming and all kinds of crazy stuff, really.” Turns out, those stories are true. Chris said some of the Backbone’s guests have gotten just a bit too close …

Like that guy who jumped in a few weekends. And the kiddies who want to jump right in. “And we did have one gentleman here who was actually fly fishing,” laughed Chris. But despite those few incidents, Chris said the pond has definitely become part of the package at Devil’s Backbone. “The pond has really become as much a part of the identity of the restaurant as anything else.” NCL

A Fun Filler I am always looking for interesting fillers for both the shade and sun garden. Often times a filler is a unique balance of form, texture and color in relation to other species that are found in the same locale. White and green variegation is a 4-letter word in my landscape dictionary since it commands so much attention that all other species around it fade to the distance. Time and creativity must be spent to mute the color by using hues of like and contrasting colors to makes a successful break from that strong yellow foliage to other more soft colors like blue and pink. However, a more tasteful variegation is a combination of mostly greenery with hints of yellow – just enough variegation to look interesting but not shout out ‘HERE I AM’. Variegated Solomon’s Seal or Polygonatum odoratum ‘Variegatum’ is that unique combination of form, texture and yes, tasteful variegation that complements other shade and part sun species. Variegated Solomon’s Seal is an upright, spreading perennial with a main stem and opposite green leaves with a subtle yellow outline – Zones 4 to 9. The plant is a rhizome or modified root that spreads underground to eventually create a mass. The best site to plant this species is a full shade or part sun garden but I have had success in many gardens where it gets up to 6 hours of early morning sun. It is a useful tip to remember that if you wish for a shade or part-sun plant to thrive in your garden in a sunny location, choose early morning eastern sun and not the long hot western exposures that are very difficult for your shade plant to adapt to. When planting Polygonatum, remember that it tends to creep so locate it in an area where it can do what it wants to do naturally. Proper soil preparation is a must, as always, but it has been known to tolerate a host of soils including our famous, or infamous (depending on your vantage point), Nelson County

red clay. As with all rhizomes, plant so that the ‘club’ from which the stems grow is just above or slightly below the soil level (similar to German Iris). The best combinations to use with Variegated Solomon’s Seal is as broad as the palette of plants you can choose from. I often like to use it with pinks and blues as it contrasts nicely with these two colors. Any of your blue or pink Phlox stolonifera or divaricata work well with this as do Endless Summer, Limelight and Annabelle hydrangeas. With its unique texture and form you can even incorporate a host of ferns (Japanese Beech Fern is my personal favorite), periwinkle, hosta or even natives such as Trillium or Virginia Bluebells. Remember to always locate your Polygonatum to the front of the border since its eventual height is only around 12-18 inches. You can easily go two different directions with its unique color: complementary colors such as other yellows and greens or contrasting colors such as the aforementioned blues and pinks. Hardscapes always work well with this species including any upright feature such as a birdbath, birdhouse or even water feature where the Variegated Solomon’s Seal can reach up around the base of the feature to bring needed height similar to how any spike-like plant complements these upright structures. Purchase this species in groups as it will fade to oblivion if it does not have at least 4 buddies in close proximity to it. Over time, these 5 plants will fight and hold their own to create a mass around your structure that will be instantly noticed by anyone that walks or sits in their proximity. And for the cut flower enthusiast, use it rationally the first year and generously in years to come with any sun or shade arrangement where its unique color, form and texture will highlight just about any arrangement of complementary or contrasting color. asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, The ticks are crazy this year! Do I need to worry about tick bites? The ticks seem to be everywhere and the number of questions that I get about tick bites has increased dramatically this spring. The cases of Lyme Disease in central Virginia are increasing in number and Lyme disease is considered endemic in the area. Lyme Disease is transmitted by infected black legged ticks. After several days to several weeks about 70-80% of infected people will develop a painless rash. As the rash gets larger the center clears giving the “bull’s eye” rash. Other symptoms may include headache, fever, fatigue, muscle and joint aches and neck stiffness. You can prevent tick born infections by avoiding the ticks. Tick infested areas like tall grass and dense vegetation should be avoided. You should frequently check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks. Tick repellents are available both for people and pets. Removing ticks as soon as possible is important because ticks need to be attached for 24 hours before an infection is spread. Ticks are best removed

by grasping the tick close to the skin with forceps and gently pulling straight out. Try to get the whole tick – leaving the mouth parts in the skin may cause irritation at the site. Routine antibiotic use for tick bites is not recommended. However, a single dose of doxycycline can be used to prevent infection if a black legged tick has been on for at least 24 hours (the tick should be significantly engorged with blood) and the antibiotic can be taken within 72 hours of tick removal. Avoiding ticks and removing ticks as soon as they are discovered are the best prevention of Lyme Disease and other tick related infections. Awareness of symptoms is important because these infections are easily treated in early stages.
