from thepublishers Only Adam would go to the beach and find himself a pine cone. Or, as he would say it, “nine cone.” Just wait until he figures out the swimming thing. After putting an issue to bed, the last thing I want to do is refocus my pair of eyes on a stack of word-filled paper. While on vacation at our undisclosed location, I broke my rule and read Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay by William W. Warner. It is the book to read when you are on the bay, especially when you are pregnant. Because crabs wear their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, the only way their bodies can grow is by molting. As a female crab approaches her final molt, the male crab becomes restless and begins a courtship. Sometimes the coquettish female plays hard-to-get but ultimately, the male cradles her and she begins to molt, revealing a mature body that is ready for mating. In a lovers’ embrace, the pair swim attached as the relationship is consummated over a period of several hours. The female is now a sook. At this point, various animals in the kingdom leave their mate. Not the blue crab. He stays with the sook for a good 48 hours more until her soft

shell hardens up, cradling her to safer waters. Only then will the Jimmy leave so that the sook can rest up and give birth in the spring. After the spring spawn, the now older females spend the rest of their lives in the water, volunteering, playing bridge with the ladies, etc. Sometimes, they go on what’s called a “summer run,” visiting the waters of their youth. One last visit to the place they fulfilled their purpose of becoming mothers. And as a new wave of mating “doublers” pass before them, they float away into deeper waters and die. We should all swim so beautifully. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

Summertime wines Summertime, and the living is‌better with a glass of wine. Remember childhood summers? Running barefoot, chasing fireflies, lying in the cool cut grass of evening staring up at the stars, or feeling the steamy warmth after a shower? But more than anything, the sense that summer was timeless—long, sunlit days yawned and stretched into eternity. School was out and we could be lazy, languid and listless. It didn’t matter where we grew up, we all shared that slowed-down, livin’ is easy sense of summer. Yet it seems as the human race works harder, rushes more and pushes for faster technologies we need more than ever to slow down. (Although maybe in Nelson County we’ve found the last bastion of yesterday’s paradise.) A week ago, one of my wine tasters told me that she wanted to slow down but in order to stop and just be, she needed a glass of wine—not the alcohol, but the ritual. Perhaps we can all stop for a moment and breathe in summer’s warmth, with or without wine. The following are summertime sippin’ wines. Pull the cork and sloooow down.

Domaine Lalanne – Produced in the heart of Gascony, Armagnac country, Lalanne is a blend of 40 % Colombard, 30 % Gros Manseng and 30 % Ugni Blanc. It’s light and refreshing with notes of candied lemons, lemon grass and hay. A nice change from Pinot Grigio. $10.99 Domaine de l’HĂŠmonière, Sauvignon Blanc, Touraine – Touraine could be considered the heartland of the Loire. It’s an area that produces a lot of young, fruity Gamay-based wines, and the white counterpart to these is the young, spritely Sauvignon Blanc. Look for racy, grassy, grapefruit notes, without the minerality or maturity of neighboring Sancerre, but without the price tag either. This little Touraine is beautiful chilled well and sipped over lunch or on its own. Pair with oysters, fish or goat cheeses. $12.99 Schilcher Sekt Strohmeier - The beautiful amber-colored sparkling rosĂŠ from Austria is for the person who’s tried everything. Totally unique it’s made from 100 % Blauer Wildbacher. Dry, with yeasty, baked bread notes and a touch of rhubarb on the nose. Perfect for pairing with cheeses, salmon, olives or cold vegetables. I popped the cork

and sat with a friend—a pond before us, the mountains around us and, as the sun lowered swapping the heat of the day for the warmth of the wine within us, the moment was magical. $19.99. No added sulfites. Domaine de la MordorÊe, Tavel – If Tavel is the king of rosÊs, then MordorÊe (meaning woodcock) may well be the king of southern Rhône producers. There’s an argument for it anyway. Owned and run by brothers Fabrice and Christophe Delorme, the 135-acre estate produces outstanding wines. As if it were not enough that Christophe is tall, handsome and a dedicated family man, he’s also a dedicated winemaker (and terroirist) and an ardent supporter of organic viticulture. No herbicides, pesticides or fungicides go into any of his wine. His Tavel is a big wine—deep, dark rosÊ in color, more amber and almost red. But it’s loaded with fruit. Look for orange blossom, strawberries, watermelons and cherries. This is the red wine-drinker’s summer drink. Perfect match for barbecue, grilled meats, Asian cuisine and cheese. $22.99 Join Kay in the Southern Rhône Valley in April 2011. Kpfaltz@cstone.net

[ this month’s question ]

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring flowers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn. Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views! Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color. This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows. The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a filter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window film blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare. The wonderful thing about window film is that it still

allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot about your majestic views. When window film is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass. The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window films, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the film will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window films with a lifetime warranty. 3M window films have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. 3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry. Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window films is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented films that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window films significantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction. So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window films is so beautiful you won’t even notice them. Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window film better than anyone in the area. AUGUST 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE

The crew of the batteau “Rosalee” pushes the boat free from a ledge as they make their way from Bent Creek to Wingina. The low level of the James River made this leg particularly difficult. Captain Byrne Nelson catches a quick nap (opposite). The grueling eight day James River Batteau Festival is comprised of 8 legs that take the hand-made wooden boats 120 miles from Lynchburg to Maiden’s Landing near Richmond.

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE AUGUST 2010

Roger and Byrne Nelson grew up on the James River. But not until this year did they truly experience it. For eight days, the brothers lived, worked, slept, and ate on the river in their handmade batteau as part of the 25th anniversary of the James River Batteau Festival. They put the boat in the water one day before the official June 19 start of the festival that started in Lynchburg and ended the following Saturday 120 miles down the river at Maiden’s Landing. According to his brother, Byrne has been participating in the festival on and off since it started. And Roger, who lives in Wingina, started crewing a few years ago on a boat belonging to their good friend Charlie Davis.

“But Byrne wanted to be more involved with the festival this year,” said Roger. And involved they got. Together with another family friend, Dave Bryan, the brothers spent nearly four months dedicated to their batteau. But because of the perpetual winter we seemed to have, they couldn’t start the actual construction until March 13. “We worked just about every Friday, Saturday and Sunday all day long and on into the night,” said Roger who is vice president of the Virginia Canals and Navigation Society which helps organize the batteau festival. “And then we worked Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights.”

“I loved being on that river with everybody. Everybody brings something individually out there. Everybody is different. Every boat is different. Every crew is different. But it’s good that they all come together and do a historic reenactment of an event,” said Byrne, who lives in Buckingham County. “I really enjoy participating in keeping something like this alive.” Roger Nelson, head boatman of the batteau “Rosalee” tries to figure out a different route through a small rapid on the James River after getting hung up on the rocks.

JULY 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 11

12 NELSON COUNTY LIFE AUGUST 2010

Roger Nelson, head boatman, works the front sweep aboard the batteau “Rosalee” Monday June 21, 2010 as the boat travels down the James River on the third leg of the 25th anniversary of the James River Batteau Festival. Byrne Nelson jokes with Brian Coffield, of Boyd Tavern (below left). Zac Howie poles the “Rosalee” along the James River during the 120 mile trip. A very tired Ned Nelson gets a pointer from his uncle Byrne Nelson, as the “Rosalee” arrives in Wingina (below right). Although the 8-day trip is quite arduous the crew still found time to relax and enjoy themselves.

Roger, like his brother and many other members of the Virginia Canals and Navigation Society, has a real passion for the James. Next year, he’ll be the organization’s president and in addition to a membership drive, he has lofty aspirations. “My goal is to see the Canal Society move into a building. There are all these artifacts from the big dig in Richmond and we need a small museum,” said Roger. “It’ll take a while, it won’t happen overnight, but we’ll get it done. It’s one of my goals in life.” Though the brothers worked on the batteau with some friends, they made it a family affair and named the batteau Rosalee after their mother. Many of the other boats were named after places or other people (mostly men), but Roger said Rosalee sounded river-like and they all decided that it would be nice to honor their mother who passed away in 1994. “Dave didn’t have any problem with that,” he said. “Mom had us down on the river when we were little kids. She was an avid canoeist when she was young. I have a photo of her in the Delaware river canoeing solo back in the ‘40s.” For this 25th anniversary run of the James River Batteau Festival, 25 batteaux launched from Lynchburg on June 19. And it wasn’t always easy getting down the river. “It was hot and the water was low. Some of these folks have ten years on us. I’m 57 and I was taking a beating,” said Roger. Only 19 batteaus went the full 120 miles, but many of those got through thanks in part to the Nelson brothers and their crew. In fact, as they were helping eight batteaus through the rocks, they missed the 25th anniversary celebration in Roger’s hometown, where many of the festivals founders lived. By the time they got close to Wingina, a couple batteaus were already stuck in the rocks, but the Nelsons found another way. But batteaus kept coming through and kept getting stuck. So after getting those batteaus out of the rocks and around the other side of the river, they formed a little group and picked up the rocks to make a little dam to prevent any more incidents. Do they wish they’d made it to the celebration instead? “I have no regrets, it’s good to help people,” said Roger, happily. “Some of those boats probably would have been out there all night long.” “We all put our own personalities into it,” added Byrne. “We just work together for a common goal: getting down the river and having a good time.” NCL

AUGUST 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 13

Once upon a time, STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by NORM SHAFER

This cabin owned by Jeffrey and Kay Fracher was recently rebuilt in Afton. The cabin was owned by Kay’s father. He bought it in the 1950’s and had it moved from the Blue Ridge Parkway to his land in Glass Hollow.

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE AUGUST 2010

James Webb bought some property in a hollow off Route 151 and brought to it an old, very old cabin. Now, his daughter, Kay Fracher, is visiting that Afton cabin as often as she can. But, as with most fairy tales, there’s a little bit more to the story than that.

During the restoring of Jeffrey and Kay Fracher’s cabin the bottom row of logs was found to be rotten. Luke Furrow of Riverview Construction had to dig out the old foundation and pour a new one, and completely rechink the logs. Luke (bottom, at right) restored the cabin with the help of employee Adin Ray.

James lived in Waynesboro but his father, Julian Webb, started the Blue Ridge Veneer Plant at the foot of Afton Mountain. James wanted very badly to buy some property on Glass Hollow, but since he wasn’t from there originally, it was hard to find anyone to sell him the land. But he was smart and came up with a plan: he had a friend from the plant purchase the land and then sell it to him the next day. James also found an abandoned 2-story hand hewn cabin up off the Blue Ridge Parkway, bought it, had it moved to his new 54-acre property and re-assembled it as a one story cabin with a bathroom. He caused quite a stir, but everything was forgiven when James got the first telephone in the hollow and invited all of his new neighbors to use it as they please. And that’s how the Webbs ended up in the hollow. But James died ten years later and his wife passed away in the early 1990s and it’s been difficult for his two grown children to keep up with the place. “I didn’t like to go over there,” said Kay. “It was pretty funky.” But now that Kay and her husband Jeff are retired, they decided to give life back to the cabin – which is about 200 years old. Their original budget was $25,000 but they ended up doing about $90,000 of work on the place. But now the 20-by-40-foot main room has a fully functional kitchen, a big open space with a fireplace and there’s a bathroom with all new fixtures. They have a bed, reading chairs and a very cozy living space. But no TV and no Internet. And both say the money was well spent. “We walk, hang out with the dogs, read,” said Jeff. “It’s just as beautiful as Nelson County can be.” NCL

A stone fireplace is a focal point in the interior of the cabin.

The side entrance to the cabin.

A 2010 midyear market snapshot

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

I really love numbers, but I never have enough space… In a nut shell, the Nelson County real estate market is showing some signs of improvement. More properties are selling, but not necessarily for more money. Here is a midyear snapshot. Land Countywide Summary; midyear - 27 parcels of land sold countywide. That is up from 19 parcels sold by midyear 2009. Countywide inventory is higher; there are currently 289 active land listings as compared to 256 this time last year. Wintergreen (Mountain); midyear - 4 lots have sold with an average price of $105,000 and a median of $122,500. This same time last year, only 2 lots had sold. There are currently 62 active lots at a median asking price of $99,700 compared to 51 lots at a median of $110,000 in midyear 2009. Stoney Creek; midyear - 6 lots have sold. Last year only 2 lots had

sold by midyear. While more lots have sold in 2010 the median price has dropped to $88,000 from a median of $110,000 in 2009 year end. There are currently 73 lots for sale at median lot price of $112,900. County Properties (Excluding Wintergreen & Stoney Creek); midyear - 17 parcels of land sold. In comparison to midyear 2009, more land has sold and at a higher price per acre. Residential Countywide Summary; midyear – 87 homes have sold with an average price of $314,017 ($163 sq ft), median of $267,000, and average days on market (DOM) of 161; only 14 of these properties sold for more than $500,000 while 32 sold for under $200,000. Midyear 2009, 49 homes had sold at an average price of $353,123 ($183 sq ft), median of $280,000. There are currently 425 homes for sale with an average asking price of $417,377 ($206 sq ft) compared to this time last year in which

But they didn’t have the budget to get that full-size unit, so they bought a retired trash truck, combined that with the small truck they already had and, voila, new command center and extraction truck. But after eight years of use, Curtis and the rest of the department were ready for a change. At just under 300K, the standard Hackney-built chassis was a frugal buy, and the truck will only get used two to three dozen times each year, but the vehicle was so unique it was featured on the cover of Virginia Fire EMS Magazine. With just $100,000 in grants from the commonwealth, nearly two-thirds of this truck was paid for using money from private donations and a capital fund drive. Wanna check it out (or volunteer with the squad)? The truck is up on the mountain and visitors are always welcome. “The bottom line is, the equipment that we run is paid for by the community,” said Curtis. “People should know what they’re paying for.” NCL

Last month you got a first glimpse of Wintergreen Fire & Rescue’s brand new mobile command unit. Now, here’s the real scoop on the $262,000 mobile command unit and heavy tactical truck that does it all. It carries tools used to cut cars apart or fight structure fires. It can provide 360 degree lighting, like it did after the April Blue Ridge Parkway shootings. And – maybe most importantly – this truck has a bank of radios making it possible to communicate with pretty much anyone in the area. Wintergreen has four ambulances, two response vehicles, and four fire pieces split between the valley and mountain stations. But that’s not always enough. “Back in the ‘90s, we had a very small truck that carried just the basic compliment of extraction tools. Then in 2002 we decided to go to a full-size heavy truck with a command center on it,” explained Wintergreen Fire & Rescue’s Chief Curtis Sheets.

outstanding in his field The Wintergreen Adaptive Sports guy calls it quits. STORY by JENNIE TAL PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

26 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 2010

Michael Zuckerman has worked hard his whole life. “Now it’s time to go play,” says the retiring executive director of Wintergreen Adaptive Sports (WAS). And play he will. Though he’s been up on the mountain for almost 30 years now, winter sports are not passé for him yet. “My winters are definitely going to be spent at another mountain somewhere skiing my brains out,” he said. He’ll also be visiting the Caribbean with his wife to snorkel and relax and he’ll want to get some gardening in at house in Afton, too. So even though he’s technically retiring August 31, this former special education teacher is not planning to slow down at all. There’s no official replacement for Michael yet, and he’s playing a bit of a roll in searching for the next executive director, but he said he’s working on retiring gracefully by letting Wintergreen Resort and the person who comes in to take control over where WAS is headed – even though Michael knows exactly where it’s been: The active pre-retiree said the organization started extremely organically in 1984. At that time, Michael was an instructor at the ski school and

someone approached him asking if he’d want to work with amputees. He ran the show solo until about 1995 when he set up the nonprofit that was then called Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing (since the group now does kayaking, canoeing and golf, they changed “Skiing” to “Sports” a couple years ago). Back then, Michael and the half dozen volunteers he worked with stored their supplies in a closet up on the mountain. “It’s now 16 years later and we have a slope side building that’s been added onto twice, our own portable wheelchair accessible bathroom, the building at Lake Monocan, $75,000 worth of equipment [and] 150 volunteers,” he said. But what they have is not nearly as important as what WAS does. “What we do is absolutely magical,” said Michael, speaking not only of the people with disabilities that he’s worked with over the years, but also of their families and the students he’s inspired to work in fields like outdoor recreation, prosthetics and wheelchair design. “It’s transformative… we show people what’s possible… It’s incredibly powerful stuff.” Michael said he’s going to miss the organization terribly, but that the timing is right for his departure. “It’s time for somebody else to take it on.” NCL

For Nelson County visitors and residents alike, this part of Virginia is like a little piece of heaven on earth. But two men of the cloth are taking God’s word for it that it’s time to leave – at least for now. One – Reverend Tommy Thompson, formerly of Rock Spring United Methodist Church – is heading East while the other – Reverend David Cameron, formerly of Rockfish Presbyterian Church – is heading West. Rev. Thompson is moving with his wife, Leslie and two young children (9-year-old Daniel and 5-year-old Grace) to the Eastern Shore town of Parksley, Virginia where he will preach at Grace United Methodist Church and spend his free time fishing in the ocean with Daniel. Pastor Pamela Baldwin moved here from Craigsville and started at Rock Spring UMC July 4. Rev. Cameron is moving with his wife and children to Albuquerque, New Mexico to the congregation of Emanuel Presbyterian Church in the Knobb Hill. His last sermon at Rockfish was July 11 and while the Faber congregation doesn’t have a new permanent pastor yet, the interim pastor search committee is on the lookout. And while both are sure that this is the right thing for them to do, neither is finding it particularly easy to leave the place we all know and love. “There [are] so many good memories, said Rev. Thompson. “The hills, the mountains. And I say that because I never rode a bicycle until I moved here. Since then he’s ridden several centuries – that’s 100 miles folks. “And secondly, he continued, “I won’t forget the gardening. I never gar-

higher authorities dened before I moved here, but the people; just walking into their gardens and getting to know them and becoming a gardener because of them has been very meaningful for me.” “What I’ve thoroughly enjoyed about being in Nelson County is just the variety of people here in this county that I never expected when I came here,” said Rev. Cameron. “I am constantly still stunned by the wealth of experience and the funny idiosyncratic behaviors and personalities that just make it a wonderful place to live.” When Rev. Cameron first game to Rockfish Presbyterian in 1999, he got the sense that most people felt like the church was “the Wintergreen church” and was full of “people who aren’t from around here.” One of the things he’s most proud of is the way the congregation has become so involved in the community during his service. By engaging in community service like serving lunch once a month at the Rockfish Valley Senior Center he feels like the tension has eased. Rev. Thompson has been most inspired by his former congregation’s community involvement as well. “[One] big way the church has become part of the community is through the Children’s Food Pantry Project, started largely by Olivia Ellis,” he said. “Two years ago she got our children to pack twenty or so little paper bags with food items children would appreciate and hand them out at the Nelson Food pantry once a month… Now they put together 200+ bags each month.” NCL

Wind. You can’t see it. You can’t always hear it. And sometimes, you can’t even feel it. But one Nelson County man is proving you can get some power from it. Steve Crandall, owner of Devils Backbone Brewing Company and Tectonics II, a construction firm, has installed the first and only wind turbine of its kind in the county. It connects to an electric panel which goes directly into the power grid. And not only is it saving a little bit of money by offsetting electricity costs, but Steve sees it as a bit of a morale and job booster to his crew. “Being in the building business, we’re seeing our construction activity slow,â€? he pointed out. “Green jobs, you know, this may help fill the void. And I may be able to keep my guys working at the same time [as I] generate a little electricity for folks and stop buying oil from people that don’t like us.â€? Steve worked with the county to establish an ordinance for turbines like his. “The county did a tremendous job,â€? he said. “There are different tower heights allowable in different areas. And it’s going to be something we’re going to start seeing pop up. Because they do make sense.â€? The one he installed, a 2 ½ KW Turbine, is expected to yield 400500 kilowatts each month, but could – with really good wind – get up to 2,000 kilowatts in that same time period. “Of course, there [are] larger turbines for other areas,â€? he added. “You can supply your electricity needs for entire households with that – it’s a very cost-effective, easily serviceable unit.â€? To see Steve’s turbine in action, swing by Devils Backbone in Beech Grove. NCL

Often times we get so caught up in working in our landscape that we forget that the number one objective is to ultimately have fun and relax. The payback for that backbreaking, sweat provoking work and sunburned skin has to be more than enjoying the view from indoors as you collapse into bed in the evenings. What better environment could you ask for than a shaded patio with audible water flowing and a rocking chair to unwind at the end of the day? Or maybe for the kids (and even ‘senior kids’) a tire swing, a grassy hop scotch court, or the traditional croquet or badminton court. The addition of one or two simple features will allow you a place to relax and enjoy your yard while adding a nice touch of personality to your landscape. Even if you are ‘planted out’, here are some fun things to consider. A tire swing is a magnet for kids and adults alike. Find a tall tree with a branch at least 10-15 inches in caliper (or circumference) and toss a heavy gauge nylon climbing rope over it. Now cut a section out of an old garden hose that is long enough to drape over the entire branch and thread the rope through it so that the hose remains at the top of the branch both protecting the tree and extending the life of the rope. Make a trip to your local tire dealer and procure a large truck tire and tie it to the rope about 2 feet from the ground and voila! – a resting/play area for both the young and the old. Those Christmas lights in the attic have much more potential than the 4 weeks (or less) in December they are strung on your Christmas tree. Around any outdoor sitting area, Christmas lights strung from branches illuminate table with a soft glow, creating the perfect setting for an evening meal or drink. Best yet, in-

sects are less attracted to these lights than their incandescent big brothers thereby providing a nice relief from mosquitoes and other night flying nuisance critters. Regarding mosquitoes, make sure that all of your birdbaths, fountains and even some drain pipes from the gutters have a ‘mosquito dunk’ floating or sitting in them to kill the larvae before they develop an insatiable appetite. It is a hockey puck size wafer that releases a chemical that kills the larvae that the adult mosquitoes deposit in the water. Don’t worry, chemical engineering has developed this product with sniper-like accuracy for just the mosquito and not any other non-target species (i.e. birds, bats, moths, etc.). Any old lanterns sitting in the garage from your parent’s home or from countless antique sales are a very unique element that, with a little work (and a new wick and citronella oil) can illuminate paths with the element of fire – something very difficult to duplicate with electric lights. With your lantern ready, pay a visit to most any hardware stores for 6 to 8 foot hanging basket rods that stick into the ground (usually under $20). Along a grass or stone path or even around a patio, place these rods about 10+ feet apart and hang your lantern. ‘Hop scotch’ graffiti finds its way onto every driveway sooner or later if young children are around and chalk is available. The problem is heat from the driveway and the FedEx man makes it difficult to play. Try this: find some old bricks and place them in the ground at soil level in the ‘hop scotch’ pattern in a relatively flat area in your lawn. The kids will find a new passion for this old game (not to mention that it looks really cool). Until our next article, be creative!

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Weight Loss Part 4 Eat/Drink Less Calories + Burn More Calories = Weight Loss Above is the weight loss equation. If a person is motivated to follow it, he or she can lose weight. All diets and weight loss programs follow it, whether they say so or not, for it is the only way weight is lost. The last column I wrote looked at the eating side of the equation; let’s look at the burning side today. The key ingredients for burning calories are motivation and elevation of heart rate. First, we have got to be motivated to be more active if we want to burn calories. The TV is the ultimate motivation destroyer. I think the first step to being more active and burning calories is to turn off the television. Suddenly, there is more time, less couch sitting, and an active instead of passive mind. If television is not the limiter keeping you from activity, then

figure out what is. Is it the weather? Stress? Commitments? Don’t like to sweat? Be honest with yourself, find the limiter, and find a way around it. Remember, if you aren’t motivated you aren’t going to burn calories. Once you are motivated, you have to get your heart rate up. Walking, running, or aerobics class does this. But, so does dancing, the Wii, gardening (with a little focus on keeping moving), wood splitting, skipping, playing ball, or chasing your kid around the yard. Find something you like that gets your heart rate up, do it, and burn some calories. I promise that as you get more active it becomes more fun and easier. You will lose weight and live better.

theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Physical Therapy

The Best Match Recently, I visited with a friend and physical therapy colleague. As we were catching up, the topic turned to work. She was recounting how some of her clients wanted to start running or return to running after an injury. She told me that she tells many of them that they “don’t have the body to be a runner” and should choose another sport. My first response was that she was pretty direct and quick to squash a client’s goals but then I thought she may have a valid point. And, she may be saving them from further injury. She has some track and runner’s qualification to say what she said. She was an accomplished hurdler, her husband is a retired track coach and they are still in the track and field business. So, she has been around runners most of her life. When individuals want to start an exercise program, it is difficult to match the person to an activity especially if there is a complicated medical history. However, it is not impossible. Considerations include

training for cardiovascular, strength, flexibility and balance within a safe range. Parameters of time and frequency need to be established. And, your current fitness level needs to be established; not what you used to do “years ago”. For some individuals, that may mean starting to exercise while sitting in a chair. For others, it may mean walking 30 minutes, five days a week. Injuries are also a factor. For example, I swam competitively for many years and even after I stopped competing, I continued to swim for exercise. After two shoulder surgeries, I couldn’t swim at the intensity that I desired and had to search for something else to challenge me. I turned to cycling which is something I continue today. As you become more physically fit, your activity will progress and change. In fact, it is good that your exercises change so you have some variety in the program. I encourage folks to exercise in many different ways so that exercising doesn’t become stale and your body is constantly challenged.
