thepublishers’daughter Hello. My name is Peyton Ashley Stafford and I am the newest Nelson County Life. I was supposed to be born on my big brother’s birthday, September 28. But since I am a lady, I decided to hang out in mommy’s tummy a little longer so that we wouldn’t fight over birthday parties and presents. I didn’t want to be an October baby so I waited until September 30 to come out. On my brother’s first birthday, he woke up mommy around her usual wake up time and he came out before lunch. How boring. I woke mommy up in the middle of the night during a rain storm. People were calling it a tropical depression. Whatever that means. Daddy drove mommy and me to the hospital in the pitch black with the windshield wipers going. That was fun! Mommy was sipping a thick shake in the car. It tasted okay. When we got to the hospital, mommy jumped in a wheel chair. Wee! Daddy stopped to talk to a friend who happened to be there. Daddy likes to talk. Splash! Mommy jumped into a bath tub and I moved around in there for a while. Mommy didn’t say any bad words but she did say “Dear

God” once. I’ve heard good things about Him. He must be nice. I came out head first and started crying because I wasn’t expecting to come out so quickly. I’m glad someone caught me. Then everyone started saying how big I was. Anyway, I got some nice presents for my birthday: a mommy, a daddy, a brother, dogs and a cat. By the way, I wasn’t named after a football player. Peyton’s the name of the girl who checked out dad’s groceries when he was doing fill-in weather at a television station in Shreveport, Louisiana. basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Rising alcohol levels Part II Reasons for higher alcohol (discussed last month) vary, but the end result seems to be a homogenized international style wine that while praised by many critics and pleasing to the widest range of people, and thus touted and sold in grocery stores, is nevertheless lacking in expression of place, in other words terroir. I find this sad, if not somewhat disturbing. Will wines from Italy one day taste no different from those of France, Spain or even Australia? If our world is one of pendular swings—we the people necessarily following what’s dictated by what we’re able to buy in the stores—then perhaps the fad of highly alcoholic wines will pass, the way that over-oaked Chardonnays did. But high alcohol may be more complex than a stylistic preference for oak when we consider the earth’s changes. In Paris two months ago with the wine tasters, I was more conscious than usual of alcohol levels. And it was perhaps no surprise that in the wine bars, those temples devoted to the art of tasting, drinking, pairing and admiring

wine, the wines represented—primarily those from the Loire and Beaujolais— were also those with lower levels of alcohol and higher acidity, thus better complimenting food. Yet there may be a place for high-alcohol wines and the following gracefully handle and balance their alcohol. (Keep in mind that producers are taxed on the amount of alcohol, and wines are allowed some leeway between what appears on the label and what is actually in the bottle. Wines under 14% can fluctuate by 1.5 percentage points, which explains why so many wines have traditionally been labeled 12.5%. Above 14%, a producer must pay a higher tax, so it’s possible that’s a wine listing 13.5% might really be more.) La Bastide St. Dominique, Châteauneufdu-Pape, 2007 – This CDP is about as good as it gets without getting into stratospheric prices. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault, it’s smooth and silky, while still maintaining great depth, complexity (earth and barnyard on the nose) and lots of fruit due to the opulence of Grenache. Aged for 18 months in stainless steel tanks, this wine is the wine I

take to friends, always assured it will receive rave reviews. Pair with heavier fare such as strong cheeses or game…or drink on its own, it’s so darn good. Get the 2007s while they last; they’re historically outstanding Rhônes. (Parker called it the vintage of his lifetime.) $38.99 Alcohol 15%. Notoriously high in alcohol, Zinfandels are excellent winter and holiday wines. Seghesio Zinfandel, 2008 - Begun 1895 by Edoardo Seghesio, the family farm is a collection of sustainably farmed estate vineyards, hand-tended by the Seghesio family. This beautiful, rich, jammed-laced wine was number one on Wine Spectator’s list in 2007. At $25.99, a true bargain. 15.5%. Edmeades, Zinfandel, 2007 – Natural yeast fermentation in small bins, hand punchdowns, minimal manipulation. Built around several vineyards planted fifty years ago. Smoke, graham cracker, chocolate, fruit…think raspberry s’mores. Even for old-world palates, it’s hard not to like this wine, and it’s always an easy crowd pleaser. $22.99. 15.2%

“I remember I went home and I was one of the first ones at the house for Thanksgiving and I went in and Mom knew I was sick. And I don’t know what I said it, I guess to make her feel better, but I said ‘Mom, I’m okay.

I feel like something really good’s going to happen.’”

12 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2010

That’s when Jimmy’s mom put her hands on his shoulders and started singing. Maybe he said that because he’d had a pretty good night up on the mountain. He hadn’t had a night off in years, and when some friends invited him to a show up at Wintergreen he agreed to go – it’d been a long time since he’d done something fun and relaxing. “Sure enough, I went up there and Lew DeWitt was there,” said the Nelson County native turned country music star. Yes, that Lew DeWitt. The man who sang tenor for the Statler Brothers. And it was just a few weeks after that Thanksgiving Day long ago when he got a call from the Statler Brothers about filling in for Lew, who had to take some time off to take care of his health. He flew down to Nashville – his very first flight – and auditioned for his heroes. And none of that ever could have happened if he hadn’t grown up right here in Nelson County. “My first time ever singing in public was at the Rockfish Elementary School when I was in 4th grade,” remembered Jimmy after a recent trip to what is now the Rockfish Valley Community Center’s stage. “The song was called Green Beret.” Walking through the halls of the Community Center brought back a lot of memories for the singer, guitarist, and writer who now lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee. “I remember that those bathrooms there had a lot of echo and I used to sing,” he reminisced. “I remember once when I finished, I heard someone clapping and it was the principal, Mr. Shelton. And he said ‘Son, that’s real nice, but you’re going to have to back to class.’ That was in my first grade class.” While Jimmy was going to school at Rockfish Elementary, he, his parents, and his eight brothers and sisters lived in what is now The Meander Inn. (Jimmy says the belief that the Statler Brothers once owned the property is nothing but local lore, perhaps inspired by the fact he once called the farm house home). He said that the Inn is a lot more furnished now than it was when he lived there because his family didn’t have a whole lot of money. “But there was so much love,” he said. “That’s what filled the house.”

Then in 1967, the Fortunes moved to Jimmy’s grandfather’s place in Lovingston that the family now lovingly calls The Homestead. From that Lovingston home, Jimmy went to Lovinstgon Elementary School – where he had his first ever paying musical job with some buddies: Curtis and David Kidd and Sammy Wright. “The phys. ed. teacher hired us to come up and play at the school one night. He said he’s pay us a dollar a piece to play at the parentteacher conference night,” said Jimmy. That night, they walked a mile to the school, played a set, and got their promised dollars. And as they walked out of the school with newly padded wallets, they walked right into a little restaurant nearby and ordered milk shakes. “It was the first dollar, and we blew it,” said Jimmy. But that night was the first time he

can remember really thinking he could make money at music. Jimmy’s always been a hard worker but he was right – music is what made him money and made him a star. From Lovingston Elementary School, Jimmy continued at Nelson Junior High and then Nelson County High School. Now, even though Jimmy lives in Tennessee now, Nelson County is still home. “Nelson County was just such a wonderful place to grow up. I had great friends and I had a family that was together,” he said. “It was like a fairy tale life, really.” When he brings friends to Nelson for the first time, Jimmy says they often remark about what a magical place Jimmy calls home. “And Nelson County is,” Jimmy said fondly. “And when you go back there, the warmth of the people is still there.” NCL

Country music singer Jimmy Fortune strums a tune during a recent walk down Memory Lane that took him to the Rockfish Valley Community Center. Jimmy was a student there when the Center was an elementary school. He remembers singing in the rest room. And so did the school’s principal, Mr. Shelton. On a tour of his old haunts, Jimmy made a stop at Oak Hill Baptist Church and the family home place in Lovingston (opposite). NOVEMBER 2010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 13

[ this month’s question ]

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring flowers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn. Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views! Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color. This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows. The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a filter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window film blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare. The wonderful thing about window film is that it still

allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot about your majestic views. When window film is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass. The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window films, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the film will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window films with a lifetime warranty. 3M window films have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. 3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry. Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window films is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented films that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window films significantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction. So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window films is so beautiful you won’t even notice them. Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window film better than anyone in the area. Recently opened once again, the new Java Depot will be open 7 days a week: weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. And in between those hours, we’re welcome to anything they’ve got in stock. “If we have it, we will serve it. That’s going to be the motto,” said Edith. “If the griddle is going, you can have a hamburger at nine in the morning. If you want a breakfast biscuit in the afternoon and I still have biscuits, happy trails, I’ll fix you that, too. If you want fried bologna, I have bologna, we’ll do fried bologna. But the sausage gravy? I will have to have a lot of talking to about that one.” NCL

E

Java Depot’s newest owner does not like biscuits and gravy. “It’s a European thing, you know?” asked Edith Fischer, longtime Nelson resident who hails from Switzerland. Her Swiss accent is strong when she’s talking about the food she’ll serve – sandwiches, breakfast biscuits, coffee and Boar’s Head Meat – but she slips into pure Nelson-speak when she talks about the time she spent at Nelson High (that high with two syllables, folks). Edith hopes to cater to the locals first. “They’re here 365 days,” she says. But, of course, day skiers and tourists are welcome at the little café at the bottom of the mountain, too.

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS

Every year, kids get pounds upon pounds of Halloween candy. Some eat it within the week and others are throwing away pillowcases full of stale Smarties and melted M&M Minis during spring cleaning. Either way, there’s a dentist willing to help. For the first time, Drs. Jim and Jennifer Rice and their practice, Rice & Rice, are participating in the Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program, a nationwide program that helps kids’ teeth stay healthy while providing soldiers stationed overseas a little taste of home. “They can enjoy a little Halloween – maybe a little late, but at least they can have a holiday,” said Jennifer, adding that they

often include notes of encouragement and thanks to the service men and women. Wondering how kids are convinced to give up their store of sweets? In case the notion of helping others isn’t enough (which Jennifer says it often is), kids can make money giving up the goods. “Bring the uneaten, unopened candy,” instructed Jennifer. “We’ll weigh it and pay $1 per pound and we’ll also give you a glowing tooth brush.” NCL To sell back some candy, visit the Crozet or Nellysford office of Rice & Rice dentists from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1. A real estate market update for Nelson County and the surrounding area

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Here is the good news and the maybe not so good news. The good news is that more properties are selling. Depending on your perspective, the not so good news is that properties are not selling at a higher price point. Let’s not dwell on the negative, like the national news media; let’s celebrate the fact that our local market is showing an increase in sales activity year over year. Here is an overview of what has happened for the first nine months of 2010 in the Charlottesville area real estate market with an emphasis on Nelson County. Home Sales; there were 2111 homes sold in the Charlottesville area in the first three quarters of 2010, which was up 3.6% (+74 sales) from 2009. Albemarle (+6.1%), Fluvanna (+18.8%), Greene (+9.5%), Louisa (+14.3%), and Nelson (+45.3% - 95 in 2009 to 138 in 2010), all showed an increase in sales, while Charlottesville (-17.3%) and Orange (-8.5%)

showed a decrease. Nelson experienced the highest spike in sales comprised of an increase in both county and resort sales. Median Sales Price; the median home price in the Charlottesville area decreased by $900 (-0.4%) compared to the first three quarters of last year. There are four counties that showed increases in their median prices: Albemarle (+1.7%), Fluvanna (+1.8%), Louisa (+5.9%), and Orange (+2.5%). The other areas showed a decline as follows: Charlottesville (-2.5%), Greene (-1.4%), Nelson (-10.7%), and the Valley (-1.0%). Contributing to the decline in median price for Nelson may be some of the recent bargain sales; eight homes sold below $100,000. Price per Square Foot (Finished); the average price per square foot of finished space in homes is not an exact science, but a downward trend is evident throughout the Charlottesville area. Average price per

finished sq ft in first three quarters of 2010: Area average 140; Albemarle 148; Charlottesville 163; Fluvanna 117; Greene 129; Louisa 113; Nelson 164. While the sq ft price for Nelson is higher than any of the other areas, it is still down when compared to the same time period in years past - 175 in 2009, 192 in 2008, 208 in 2007, and 211 in 2006. Sq ft prices are location specific. Wintergreen Resort properties still carry a higher price per sq ft. Not including resort properties the county price per sq ft is currently 121. Homes in the county located in Nellysford and Afton are currently around 151 per sq ft. Days on Market (DOM); overall the Charlottesville area has seen some stability in days on market. However, Nelson is showing an increase of DOM from 157 to 171. Homes have sold in as little as 3 days all the way up to more than 1400 days. Homes that are priced properly will be more likely to quickly sell.

Homes that are currently for sale in Nelson County have an even higher DOM of 218 and counting because they have not yet sold. Inventory; excess inventory continues to be a concern. Until the number of homes for sale is substantially reduced, home prices will remain soft. The Charlottesville area has 4% more homes on the market than this time last year. In Nelson our inventory of residential homes for sale is hovering around 400 which is slightly below the midyear inventory of 425. Contact a real estate professional to better understand how this data relates to a property you plan to buy or sell.

the wolfs are wild for beer Mother-son team launch Nelson County’s third brewery.

Danny Wolf and his mom Mary Wolf pose at their recently opened store, Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford where they sell beer, wine and soda making supplies (above). They also plan to start selling beer by the growler in November. At right, a batch of yeast sits on the counter. NOVEMBER 010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE

Mary and Danny Wolf’s goal is to build a home for Wild Wolf Brewing Company within the next year. But in the meantime, they’ve opened a home brew shop at the Valley Green Shopping Center in Nellysford. As of November 1, in addition to selling home brew and soda-and wine-making supplies, Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford offers growlers. Danny has brewed at home for a while and turned his passion into a profession after attending Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. The Wolfs decided to open a home brew supply

shop in addition to their brew pub because Danny loves to make beer and he wants to share his hobby with others. “I really like the whole do-it-yourself aspect,” he said. “I like producing something myself that people appreciate.” But while it is fun, beer making is definitely not easy. “Beer brewing has a combination of a lot of science but is also very artistic,” said Mary who thinks these two draws might be what led her son to home brewing.

“It’s an incredibly in-depth field,” explained Danny. Not to mention the business skills he’s had to learn – with the help of his mom, a retired VP in the corporate world who spent her days looking for and working on new technologies. “I’m very entrepreneurial,” said Mary. “So when I saw the craft [brewing] industry, I had a hard time not moving forward with it.” And move forward they did. The Wolfs specialize in all-grain brewing which means, essentially, brewing from scratch instead of using pre-made extracts. Not really sure what that

means? No worries – Danny does demos ever Saturday and he’d love to show you what he’s talking about. Danny looks forward to brewing beer from around the world – from a nice American Pale Ale to a Belgian Blond. “I plan on producing a variety of things,” he said, adding that he’d one day like to have 30 to 50 beers to rotate throughout the year. For now, though, he’s starting with that American pale ale and the Belgian blond. Plus a pumpkin beer, whisky oak Scottish, American lager, Saison with honey and pear, and a Belgian quadruple. The

growlers will sell for $5 each and the fill-up will start around $9. Mary says the price will depend on the complexity of the beer, but that most will be just $9 or $10. The Wolfs are waiting to close on the perfect property – but definitely want to be on the Brew Ridge Trail. They want you to love their beer, but they’d be happy for you if made something great, too. “It’s fun,” said Danny. “Something you can do at home. People who cook well and like to show off their food – it’s the same kind of thing. It’s really nice to be able to make something that people enjoy.” NCL

Grain and chunks of pumpkin begin to cook as Danny Wolf stirs a batch of pumpkin beer at Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford (above). As he pours hops into his wort, the hops begin to foam as it cooks (below). Beginning in November, Wild Wolf will be selling beer by the growler.

“Grab your partners, dosado!” STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2010

Everyone’s heard that call but does anyone actually take it seriously? Well, the Grand Squares certainly do. A dosado is a traditional square dancing call – almost as popular as the simple promenade – that invites two dancers to approach one another, circle with their backs facing, and then go back to their original positions. Sound harder than you imagined? Have no fear, the Grand Squares will teach you everything they know. The Grand Squares, part of the Shenandoah Valley Square and Round Dance Association, is a Nelson County square dance club whose mission is “education and appreciation of the traditional folk dance and music with emphasis on Western Square dance.” But it’s a lot different than the barn dances

of yesteryear, said Grand Squares member and caller Chuck Chesteen. The group has danced and taught square dancing in Nelson for more than a quarter century but it is always looking for new dancers. Each September, the Grand Squares being their 12-month Main Stream introductory square dance lessons. The class meets the third Thursday of each month and once the course is completed, beginners are invited to join the club’s monthly dances, which take place the third Friday of every month complete with refreshments, decorations and a monthly theme. It’s important to note here that even though classes started last month, new dancers are welcome to join in for the October lesson. After that, though, there may be too much to catch up

on. Spectators are always welcome at the Friday dances, though. “It’s just a lot of fun,” said Vicki Vestal, one of the club’s vice presidents. Vicki took her first square dancing lessons fourteen years ago and even though she took a while to decide to learn and then later took a decade long hiatus, square dancing has been on her mind ever since. “I liked it from the first time I tried.” Vicki said that square dancing is great exercising and members of the club do have some great times, Grand Squares is about more than that. “We just think it’s part of our heritage here in Virginia,” she said. In fact, it was adopted as the official folkdance of the Commonwealth in 1991. “It’s important to keep it alive.” NCL

We developed a really good friendship over the three years,. “ said Sherry Wheeler, owner of Ambrosia. “I’ll

It’s a lot different now with him gone. Richard and I always had more to talk about, but life happened: kids, publishing this magazine, etc. But we will miss that funny man, and wish we’d had just a little more time to talk with him again. But, Sherry says she knows exactly what Richard would say right now:. “Get over it and move on! she laughed. We’ll move on, Richard, but it won’t be quite the same. NCL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

A Deal is a Deal As a landscape designer, I feel it is extremely important to ‘lower the roof’ on a home by installing trees that are 10 feet or more upon installation. However, away from the home, in areas where you want to maybe add some interest, create a future screen (just in case a lot is sold next to you) or just plant a tree, bareroot trees cannot be left out of the equation. No tree, in my opinion, is as adaptable as one that was started either bareroot or as, ok here I go, ehemmmm, a 5-foot, ‘blue light special’ bargain from your local box store (and yes, that was hard to say). The reason is simple – trees planted small or, better yet, bareroot, seem to be quite adaptable and very forgiving to micro environments such as low water, poor nutrients/soil and extended vacations. Yes, the wait is considerably longer, but the bounty can be equal or greater than that found by installing a larger tree and the maintenance (aka watering) is minimal. Bareroot trees should be purchased from reputable vendors as a ‘feathered’ or lightly branched tree typically around 5-7 feet in height. These trees should be installed only in the late fall once they have dropped their leaves for one main reason – water levels in this time frame consistently rise from the end of September until around the end of April. Translation? More conducive growing conditions exist for bareroot material from the end of September until around the middle of January (since you don’t want to plant at the end of the ‘wet season’). When installing your bareroot tree, dig your hole as wide as the longest horizontal roots will stretch from the side of the plant – and then add 4 inches to either side. Your depth should be the exact depth needed, no more. Remove all of this soil and

mix it with compost and an organic (preferred) fertilizer and then replace it back in the hole around your tree, making sure that the roots stay horizontal as you replace the soil. Your soil ratio should be 3 parts native soil to 1 part compost since you do not want to modify the consistency of the soil too much and create a wicking effect from your tree to neighboring soil. Remember, the name of the game is ‘carefree’ not ‘high maintenance’. Water your tree well so that all air pockets are removed and excellent soil/root contact is established. Mulch as always – typically a 1 foot radius from the tree. When planting a tree of this size keep in mind that foraging animals, aka deer, sometimes like to either eat the foliage and/or bark from these younger trees and/or often times use them as territory boundaries or sparring partners for the annual ‘rut’ or mating season in the late fall. For this reason, a guard or shelter should be installed with each tree to prevent it from coming up on the nights menu or, worse yet, to be ‘marked’ (or horned) by a ‘love sickened buck’ during the deer’s yearly mating season. These shelters either come as a tube that is wrapped around the tree and attached with cable ties or you can make your own – 4 ‘t-stakes’ from your local farm and seed store driven in a square around the tree with chicken wire wrapped around the outside of the stakes. Prune as needed each fall or winter and keep neighboring weed growth down to allow minimal competition for water and nutrients. Feed as you would your other trees in your landscape and water during an absolute drought – in particular the first 2 years. Remember, this is not totally ‘care free’ but is about as close as you are going to get. Until our next article, Happy Fall!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My son hit his head 2 weeks ago and now has headaches. Should I worry about this? A church is looking for someone to pull the rope so that the bell will sound on Sunday mornings. A man applies for the job, but instead of pulling the rope he runs head first into the bell. He then falls out of the church tower to his death. Someone asks who he is. The pastor answers, “I don’t know, but his face rings a bell.” In all seriousness, your son likely has a concussion, or “had his bell rung.” A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that temporarily interferes with the way your brain works. In the news recently, there have been frequent reports regarding concussions in NFL players as a result of repeated blows to the head. Such injuries can have long term consequences. There have also been a lot of media reports about concussions suffered by military personnel. Locally, I have seen 2 youths with concussions – 1 from falling off a horse and the other from hitting his head trying to catch a baseball.

Any type of injury to the head can cause a concussion. Symptoms of a concussion can include headache, confusion, and dizziness, ringing in the ears, memory loss or slurred speech. You can even get a concussion without getting hit in the head, such as in a car accident with a sudden stop. A person with a recent head injury who suffers a repeat concussion can have long-term side effects, even if the subsequent injury is very mild. Because of this, anyone suffering from a concussion should limit or eliminate activities that pose re-injury risk for at least a few months, some would say forever. If you sprain your ankle, your ankle needs protection and rest. The same is true of your brain. If you have suffered any type of head injury and are experiencing persistent symptoms or complications, be sure to see your medical provider. Meditation and Mindfulness Although associated with Buddhism and other faith traditions, meditation is universal. And anyone can do it. And it’s free! You can’t say that about most things these days. Many images arise with meditation: “clearing the thoughts” in your head, trying to attain “higher state” or chanting “Om” several times. Meditation can be transforming with practice but, simply, meditation is paying attention on purpose. That may sound easy but consider how many times during the day we try to “multi-task” thinking we are being productive. In actuality, the brain can only focus on one task at a time. The brain stops one task, so it can perform another. What usually happens is that we do several tasks with less attention to each one; instead of performing one task well with our full attention. Most people that tell me that they do not have time to stop and sit quietly for thirty minutes or even ten minutes. Their schedules are too busy. Certainly, how are you possibly

going to get everything done? It is a valid question and perhaps, I suggest, that is the very reason to take the time to meditate for your health. With the current level of medical diagnostic testing, research has demonstrated that meditation for a short time daily can have profound affects on your health and well being. There are positive changes in your immune system, GI system, stress level, central nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal system. It is a “self –regulatory practice” that can promote your own health and well being. Mindfulness encompasses meditation and refers to being attentive to each moment without judgement. When someone is talking to you, giving that individual your full attention instead of thinking of the other place you would rather be. In practice, it is challenging because we are always rushing off to the next activity. Our society does not reward us for stopping and taking a moment to breathe. We are pushed to be more

babylove Name: DOB: Time: Weight: Length: Place:

Peyton Ashley Stafford September 30, 2010 4:15 am 9 lbs. 12oz. 21.5 in. Charlottesville, VA

It’s a good thing we didn’t dilly dally when I felt the first rush. When we went to bed the evening of September 29, this baby was officially “late.” Her due date was September 28, which is Adam’s birthday and official due date. Though we were fully expecting baby #2 to crash his party, she decided to wait until the morning of September 30, a Thursday. It was 1:45 a.m. when I felt the first wave. Strong enough to wake me up, I told Tommy he should probably get up. There was no time for a shower, unlike last time. But I did go to the kitchen and make myself a whey shake. Pouring it into a mason jar, it looked like a batch of sour dough starter. I was already in the passenger seat of the car when Hayley arrived to trade places with us. Within a half hour or so, we were already on the road to Martha Jefferson Hospital in what Tommy described as a monsoon. Adventure! We park at the entrance of the hospital and Tommy hands the car keys to a guy in a uniform. Wearing boxers and a T-shirt (attractive), I seize the closest wheel chair. As Tommy wheels me up to Labor & Delivery, he briefly stops to chat with someone he recognizes. Can he not see that his wife is in labor? It was Ray Uttaro, our county’s Emergency Services Director. And yes, this was an emergency!

By the time a nurse had showed us to our room, I was ordering Tommy to fill up the tub. Dr. Christine Wamhoff happened to be the doctor on call (bonus!). Smiling at me she said, “Please don’t deliver the baby in the water.” I told her I’d jump out when I was ready to push, but that she’d better be here to catch! At this point I was close to being 7 centimeters dilated. When I labored in the tub with Adam two years prior, I remember an avalanche of expletives poured out of my mouth. This time was different. I remember moaning a mantra – “Open Peyton” – and I think the worst thing I said was “Dear Gawwwwd!!!!” To be honest, I was a bit worried I wouldn’t notice when my body needed to push. Silly me. It was like a train had hit me. The baby felt really low and I looked at Tommy and shouted “PUSH!”. You see last time, I chose a different four-letter word because I was ignorant and didn’t know better. I have matured. Things start getting exciting when you’re ready to push. Nurses put on their game faces. Husbands start fidgeting. And by the time Doc Wamhoff entered the room, I was winding up for the pitch. When I wrote about Adam’s birth two years ago, I said the following regarding the pushing stage: For the record, pushing is great. It is more than great. It is fabulous. I love pushing. Pushing should be President!

I still stand by that message. And call me a crazy natural birth zealot (I’ve been called worse), but there is nothing more empowering than feeling your child being born and being fully conscious of the event. The female body is built to do this. Believe in it. Tommy tells me I pushed about 5 or 6 times. On that last push, I grunted like a man and out came a pink baby girl. There she was, on my chest! I remember thinking this delivery was a tad easier than Adam’s. She even felt smaller. The time on the clock was 4:15 a.m. When the nurse took Peyton to clean her up and record her vitals, I heard a bunch of “Wows” in the room. They were staring at the readout on the scale: 9 lbs. 12 oz. I may be only 5 ft. 2 in. tall but I grow ‘em big! Adam was 8 lbs. 1 oz. and 19.5 in. Peyton was nearly a 10 pounder and 21.5 inches long. We weren’t expecting that. Not. At. All. The way we look at it, there’s more to love.

Adam goes back and forth between thinking his sister’s really cool, and thinking she’s just okay. If she had a set of wheels to spin, she might be more fun at this point. Either way, he’s going to be a great big brother!

Me with daddy and mommy in the recovery room. I look like en Eskimo.

Antique Cast Iron Columbian Fairy Cook Stove Central VA Great fancy cook stove from the late 1800s or early 1900s. We don’t expect many people still use these but this would look great in someone’s home. Most of it comes apart for easier lifting ~ My wife & I can move it fairly easily. Measures 29 inches tall 32 – 40½ inches wide by 27 inches deep. Shows normal evidence of use, wear & age ~ Good Condition ~ Looks great to us. can be seen at The Covesville Store www.covesvillestore.com.
