Snowpocalypse in 2011? Bring it.

from thepublishers I’m not sure whether to write about this morning’s diaper blowout at Basic Necessities (witnessed by Dan the landscaper) or of memories of last year’s snowpocalypse. It’s hard to prepare yourself for either event, much less describe it in words. Mother nature gives you clues to the arrival of big snowstorms. If you haven’t had a big one in a while, you’re bound to have one soon. The same goes for diaper blowouts. If you haven’t had a big one in a while, you’re bound to have one soon. At least they didn’t have to call out the National Guard on this one. But the stress such blowouts – and snowstorms – can inflict on families is tremendous. They say shoveling snow can increase your risk of having a heart attack. The scientist who said that has obviously never changed a diaper. To prevent injury, experts say you should lift from the legs. When changing a diaper, you lift the legs. To scoop up the snow, you need to have plenty of shovels. To scoop up the other stuff, you need plenty of baby wipes. Sometimes friends will call you

the next day and ask how much you’ve gotten in your part of the country. I find that to be a rather personal question and one worth passing on. There’s another analogy I am dying to tell you about but it’s frankly, too dirty for page 5. Dirtier, much dirtier, than the diaper that inspired it. Happy New Year! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Old World, New World What do they mean, these static terms? New World generally denotes those wines displaying more fruit and coming from North and South America, South Africa or Australia, whereas Old World implies Europe. To better understand, try this little experiment: Smell the wine. New World wines often smell of plums or cherries (fill in the fruit), and taste of them too. Old World wines may reveal fruit on the nose, but on the palette there is more acidity, cranberries for instance, instead of blackberries or raspberries. This makes sense when we realize Europeans view wine as a beverage to drink with meals—and to pair with food and not taste ‘flabby’, wines need a certain acidity—whereas many New Worlders drink wine as a cocktail. I taste wine with a friend whose palette usually prefers the New World, while I have always considered my taste buds Old World. But after testing her on some older Bordeaux, she may be switching camps, and while I don’t like to admit it, my palette may be morphing into what I think of as

immediate gratification‌the fruit-forward wines of the New World. But labels discomfit me and I wonder are they remotely valid, for this is the same dualistic thinking that seeks understanding by labeling young/old, male/female, gay/straight, black/white, (pink/purple). And just as when we attempt to define a person with labels and miss his soul, do we also diminish a wine by preformed opinions? Consider that South Africa’s Constantia was around long before Bordeaux had produced much more than shad on a spit, and the wines of Chile predate Spain’s Rioja by about three centuries. Maybe our labeling of wine is as simplistic, and erroneous, as our labeling of people. Sometimes we need to turn off our brains in order to open our hearts. So once more, to better understand, close your eyes, let go of preconceived notions, and just smell it‌. Then taste it‌. Then savor it. Labels go out the window, don’t they? Yet for labels’ sake, three to try. Then you decide. But always taste wine, and life, with an open mind‌and heart, and take labels with a grain of salt

for rarely do they tell the whole story about someone‌or even some wine. New World: Erales Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 – Mendoza, Argentina. Last of the beautiful 2005 vintage. Rich, dense, yet silken and smooth. Blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and chocolate. $29.99. Old World: Mas de Gourgonnier – This beautiful property outside of St-RĂŠmy de Provence produces not only organic wine, but also olive oil and apricot butter. Look for notes of garrigue, earth, tobacco, spice and plum. $16.99 Old World meets New World: So I tell my friend I’ll bring wines we both like‌and to date, we’ve not rejected a one. Domaine de Grand Veneur, ‘Les Origines’ Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2006 – Combines the sumptuous fruit of New World with the complexity and earthiness of Old World. Notes of licorice, blackberries, blackcurrant, spices, vanilla, Provencal herbs and lavender. This wine will evolve in the bottle over years to come. Who did this?

Pete Swiderski’s inner kid. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

DECEMBER 010 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 9

As a kid down in Florida, Pete was fascinated by the fruit growers who would spray down their citrus trees with water to create an icy layer of protection before a rare southern freeze. “It was kind of freakish to see a big icicle laden tree in our neighborhoods,” said Pete, who remembers breaking off the longer icicles to play with. “It was kind of a neat, Wonderland-ish kind of thing.” Fast forward to Pete playing with his own daughter on a cold, Virginia winter day when he had a childhood flashback and thought, “Inga would love this.”

A very own ice castle for his little girl.

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2010

But he took it a step further and created a 30foot wide area with big ice crystals everywhere. It’s caught a lot of attention from passers-by on Route 151 in the heart of Nellysford where the Swiderskis live. “Step on it. Stomp on it,” said Pete Swiderski, excited, thinking about how his inner kid and his real kid like to play in the ice. “I’m crunching it with my feet right now.” And Inga certainly does love her icy wonderland. She knows to be careful – it’s slippery after all, but dad says “she likes to break off ice pieces until her little fingers are too cold and she wants to go inside and have some hot chocolate.” During the first early December freeze, Pete climbed up an eight-foot ladder and set his hose to spray a light mist into the air. With the hose balanced on a tree, the water starts up high

enough that it’s usually already formed ice pellets before it hits the ground and starts to create stalagmites taller than Inga. And where it hangs? Natural, icy stalactites. “And before long, a little five-centimeter branch will be three inches thick with ice,” said Pete, who owns Pete’s Backhoe Service, which, ironically, does a lot of work getting rid of winter precipitation. Conditions for creating something like this would definitely have to be less than freezing, but the frigid cold spell we’ve had this winter has been ideal. “When it’s 25 degrees or less, that can really zap any heat that’s keeping the water fluid and turn it into ice really quickly,” he said. “I could almost hear it turning into little ice pellets.” But the super cold temps have their downside,

too – Pete’s hose almost froze on one of the coldest nights. He rearranged it though, and said that usually as long as the water is continually moving, it won’t freeze up. Cold or not, Pete’s enjoying the time he’s spending outside with Inga and he loves that he makes other people happy, too. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s beautiful and it is just kind of out of the ordinary,” said Pete. “I’m glad to see people driving down the road get a little kick out of it.” Cars have stopped to take pictures and Pete thinks it’s great, but he’s not sure Inga quite understands. “She made the reference to being a rock star,” said Pete. Well rock out, Inga. You’ve got a pretty cool dad and a pretty awesome personal ice castle. NCL

[ this month’s question ]

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge and the sparkle of freshly fallen snow in the valleys. Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and ski. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views! Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color. This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful winter views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows. The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. It is applied to the inside of your windows, and is a filter of all of the harmful aspects of sunlight. Window film blocks 99.9% of the UVA/UVB rays, infrared and solar heat gain, and glare. The wonderful thing about window film is that it still allows natural light into your home. Oh, I almost forgot

about your majestic views. When window film is applied to your home you will still be able to see all of your views! In fact, your views and colors may be more distinct than clear glass. The company I own is Clear View Window Tinting. We are proud dealers of 3M Window Films. 3M was recently ranked #3 in Business Weekly’s “World’s 25 Most Innovative Companies” list, and ranked #12 on Forbes “America’s Most Reputable Companies” list. Not only did 3M invent window films, but they are the only company that produces its own polyester and makes its own adhesives. This ensures the film will be optically clear, and is made to last a lifetime. 3M backs all of their window films with a lifetime warranty. 3M window films have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. 3M has recently awarded Clear View Window Tinting with one of only eight national awards for outstanding growth. We have achieved this by offering the best consultations, installations, and service in the industry. Our biggest goal is to have the opportunity to educate homeowners. Our consultations include applying samples to your windows, then explaining the differences between each sample. What’s great about 3M window films is they come in many varieties and perform very well. 3M has invented films that are clear to dark to everything in between. 3M window films significantly out perform all other window treatments as far as UVA/UVB and solar heat reduction. So open your blinds, and remove your sheets off the furniture and get the natural sunlight and views you deserve, because 3M window films is so beautiful you won’t even notice them. Make your home more comfortable by using a brand you can trust in 3M and a local company that understands window film better than anyone in the area. announces the association of

DAWN PERUSSE Left to right: Project managers Jeff Fletcher and Jim Taggart stand with investors Pat and John McCray at the construction site of the Virginia Distillery Company north of Lovingston.

“So here we are a year later,” said Virginia Distillery Company (VDC) board of directors member Pat Jones McCray. “It’s been a work in progress as we’ve gone along but it seems like it’s just zoomed by.” And here’s to hoping the next year goes by quickly, too, because that’s when we’ll see the first whisky from the distillery under construction in Eades Hollow. During these cold, short days of winter, construction crews worked hard to put the walls up and the windows and doors in on the building before shutting down the operation for the coldest winter months. But even though they’re just now getting the walls up, a lot had to be done before they could get to that step. This construction project was a little backwards from most. They won’t be installing the major systems (steam piping, boiler, electricity, mill, etc.) until next spring, but the distilling equipment is already set in place. “The equipment is so large that we literally had to build the building around the equipment,” said John McCray, another member of the board of directors. One of the largest pieces of equipment is the mashtun, a large tank that will hold a metric ton – that’s 2,200 pounds – of malted barley flour and quite a bit of hot water. Inside the mash tun, the brewing process begins. Once it’s open, the distillery will offer tours to tourists and residents alike, demonstrating the brewing and distilling process, which, at VDC, goes almost clockwise around the building. It starts with the mash tun, but the start of the tour will give visitors a peek at a different part of the distilling process – a group of large tanks that will be hoisted up and set on frames just above the mezzanine floor. These fermenting tanks are not only intended to look awesome, but they’ll be just the right height for distilling operators to access the tops of the tanks from the mezzanine. VDC will eventually be making single malt whisky, but that has to age for four or five years – give or take, depending on the climate – so it’ll be a while before VDC is done, but in the meantime, the McCrays say they might have something else for us to look forward to. “We’re looking at introducing a new spirit,” said Pat. “An un-aged one.” And after several years of dreaming, for Pat it’s the sooner the better. RELAX!

By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County

Choosing Your Tax Preparer I still remember filing my first tax return – I had worked as a waitress when I was 16 and had $8 of withholding. Under my Father’s stern eye, I filled out my own return to file for my refund. The returns are much more complicated these days and there’s a lot more than $8 on the line. Here are some guidelines to consider. Self-Preparation: There are many good packaged software applications that you can utilize to prepare your own return. If your situation is relatively straight forward and you are generally savvy with computers, this is a good choice. However, you may overlook deductions and credits that are available to you. If the IRS finds errors on your self-prepared return, you should consider using the services of a Paid Tax Preparer. Paid Tax Preparer: This is a new term this year - all Paid Tax Preparers must now register with the IRS and follow IRS rules. Storefront preparers – these include chains as well as solo operations. Some

locations provide year round services – which is important in case you have a problem with the return after April 15th. The larger chains usually require their preparers to have a certain level of training and utilize good systems to prepare your return and maintain the confidentiality of your records. Enrolled Agents – these individuals often work within other firms. EAs must pass a tough IRS exam and meet annual continuing education requirements. They are also authorized to represent you if you are audited by the IRS. Certified Public Accountants – these individuals must meet a stringent examination process that covers accounting and business matters in addition to taxes. They are licensed by the state and must meet annual continuing education requirements. Most CPAs specialize in a particular area of accounting or taxation. CPAs may represent you if you are audited by the IRS. Choosing a Paid Tax Preparer is like choosing a doctor for your finances. You want someone that is experienced, reputable, licensed, and is easy to

communicate with. If they are a CPA, you can verify their license status with the state. Arrange a “get acquainted” interview with them – you should take a copy of last year’s return with you to discuss. Your Paid Tax Preparer must meet certain IRS regulations – they must sign the return and give you a complete copy. If the Preparer fails to sign the return or promises larger refunds than others, you should be wary. You can make the best of your relationship with your Paid Tax Preparer if you provide them with organized documentation for your return. Make an appointment to see them to make sure their attention is focused on your situation when you are there. And, have your list of questions prepared in advance to be sure you don’t overlook something. Remember that you are personally responsible for filing the returns correctly and on time. When you receive your prepared return, review the information carefully before you sign it. Ask questions if there are items that you don’t understand.

Turning 60 seemed like a now or never place to be. I had a knee full of arthritis and a penchant for sitting on the couch. I knew in my heart that this was not the way I wanted to face my senior years. I needed something that would motivate me to do what I hated most. . . . . exercise. Now or never indeed. So I started at 5 Star Health and Fitness, a year and a half ago. I liked having several options for working out, one-on-one personal training, group personal training, weight lifting class, cardio class, and yolates. I immediately took to group personal training. Those classes had all the benefits of a personal training session with the added benefit of having a social group to chat, and maybe commiserate with. I found friends my age who had been working out for several years and who served as role models for what I hoped to achieve. No matter which class I choose, I see people I know and like who make the training fun. My trainers, George and Andy, always challenge me beyond what I would ever do on my own. And for all the grunting and sweating over the last 18 months, I can boast that my endurance and strength have grown steadily. My knee is no longer painful on a daily basis. I can stand tirelessly for long periods of time without getting tired. I sleep like a baby at night. Five Star Health and Fitness is the gift I have given myself as an investment in the quality of my life. I can truly say that I feel younger now than when I started. Turning back time is a pretty good feeling! Ruth Powell

“If you do what you have always done, you get what you always got.” This is the time of year to reflect on where you have been and where you want to go in the New Year. Regardless of how lofty the goal, careful evaluation and planning can yield success. If your goal is to sell a home in 2011, you may want to seriously consider these tips to ensure that you are making the right move! Select the right agent; All agents are NOT the same. That would be like saying all homes are the same because they all have roofs and floors. Agents may be subjected to the same market conditions, but how an agent chooses to respond to the environment to generate results, can and does vary greatly. This is not the sales market to hire a part-time, cost constrained, corner cutting, “that’s the way I have always done it” agent. Align with a real estate professional

with a track record of success. Any agent can list a home, but not just any agent can get it sold.

and identify what buyers have actually been willing to pay for similar properties.

Set the right price; When the market is slow, there are very few buyers and limited opportunities to make a sale. Hence, it is imperative that you set a market driven asking price. Overcome the temptation to set a seller-driven asking price, the price you paid for it, plus the cost of repairs, commissions, and other markups. In addition, don’t be lured into listing with the agent suggesting the highest list price. An “asking price” does not automatically equate to a “selling price”. The list price of your home should only be based on meaningful facts and figures as derived from current market statistics. A list price should be supported by a CMA, comparative market analysis. Comparing your home with active and recently sold properties will define the current competition

Create the right conditions; Properly showcasing your home may enable it to spring ahead of the competition. With so many choices, buyers can afford to be picky and may not be willing to accept a less than perfect product. Before you put the house on the market, make those much needed repairs and renovations. Change the outdated light fixture, replace the stained carpet, and fix that dripping sink. And yes… thoroughly clean and stage it!

I know … you should have called Marlo last year.

Have the right attitude; Work toward a win-win situation. When an offer is rejected there are no winners, so don’t be easily insulted and dig your feet in the sand. Even though you have a bottom line, don’t absolutely refuse to budge. The cost of holding out could have greater finan-

cial and emotional consequences. Keep the right frame of mind; Expect and deal with the unexpected. Getting contracts to closing is much more difficult than it used to be, especially if the purchaser is a borrower. In particular, government loan programs may produce last minute delays during final investor review. Don’t be alarmed if the underwriter requires an updated appraisal or some other condition to be satisfied just prior to closing. Unless you are dealing with a cash buyer, these last minute requests may be unavoidable. Best wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2011!

when it comes to volleyball and dra Annie Saunders is a champion. Twice. This year, Annie Saunders was part of two state championship-winning teams from Nelson County High School - the Lady Governors volleyball team and the drama team which is now two-time state champion of the VHSL one act competition. Annie has been playing volleyball since seventh grade and has been interested in drama since she was young, but this is the first one act competition she has participated in at Nelson. It was tough for her to balance both activities this fall - she even had to leave partway through the volleyball state finals to make it to the regional one-act competition - but in the end, she said it was worth it “The stress of getting in rehearsals and making time to sleep, let alone breathe, after volleyball and rehearsal was crazy!” said Annie, a junior at NCHS. “But winning just made everything worthwhile; getting so close to all of those people, working so hard, it felt soooo good winning.” This is the second consecutive year that Nelson County has topped the state in the acting competition, but the first-ever state championship for the Lady Governors volleyball team. Coach Vicki Crawford, who has been head coaching the team since 1982 and only made it to the state tournament one other time (2006), said that this championship was an unbelievable experience and the ultimate reward for years and years of hard work. “It was something that was so exciting and a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true,” said Vicki, who said that this team had a harder work ethic and more dedication that almost any team she’s ever coached. “It was like the ultimate prize; you work so hard and you finally win the ultimate prize.” Both Vicki’s team and the team of actors led by NCHS drama teacher Diana Driver have been working extremely hard for several months. Before the school year even started, the Lady Governors attended - and won - a pre-season invitational in August. Diana, who was on maternity leave for the start of the school year, was reading plays all summer and sending in her top choices for her students and the long term substitute teacher NCHS graduate TJ Ferguson to evaluate. Senior Taylor Goff said they chose The History of Tom Jones (based on the novel by Henry Fielding) because it had a part for everybody. “We wanted something that showcased everyone,” she explained. Diana said that last year’s team (which included Taylor) won with a pretty serious drama, so this year she encouraged them to choose a comedy. Though they had less than a month between the start of rehearsals (Oct. 11) and the district competition (Nov. 7), these teens worked hard and pulled off a win.

“Every day,” said Diana of how often the drama team rehearsed. “It was definitely every day and sometimes in the evenings and sometimes on the weekends. It’s a huge time commitment for the kids, and being in a small school, they’re all involved in lots of other things.” But Annie can tell you that even though it’s hard work, being involved can lead to great things and she has some advice for her fellow multi-taskers: “Take a deep breath. Don’t freak out quite yet; keep pushing through the tough times, you can sleep later!” But she knows that everyone has a limit, too. “Don’t do too much; take on only as much as you can do. I may have taken on a little too much this fall, but everything happens for a reason, God willing, and someday, somewhere, this challenge will pay off.” And with two state championship rings coming her way, someday might end up being some day soon. Forcing Spring Bulbs If you enjoy the fall as much as I do you sometimes go from autumn to Christmas in a whirlwind of busy activity and don’t get to all those fall garden projects, specifically that box of bulbs you bought to plant back in September. Having leftover bulbs in your possession right now is not a lost cause. You have two options: 1) plant them ASAP and watch them bloom later than normal, or if the ground is too frozen to plant by now 2) give them a cold treatment and plant them in pots for bringing indoors for you to enjoy (and don’t worry – you can still plant them after they bloom). Bringing bulbs indoors and getting them to bloom out of cycle is called ‘forcing’. It is not a difficult process especially if you select daffodils (my favorite ‘everything resistant’ spring bulb) or tulips (caviar for every known herbivore). For sake of example, let’s force daffodils. A quick note: for indoor blooms around Christmas or New Years you need to plan to start your bulbs in a cooler in October when it is obviously still too warm to force out of doors. Forcing is typically divided into processes: cold/moist treatment and then the ‘waking process’ as you increase temperatures and light for the actual bloom cycle. Daffodil bulbs require a 13-week cold treatment where temperatures stay around 35-48 degrees. This can be accomplished in an old refrigerator (your only source for October forcing since outdoor temps are way too warm) or ‘healed in’ (buried under mulch or straw) in your landscape around your home. If you choose the refrigerator, make sure that you are not storing any vegetables or fruits in it as these products are producing a gas called ethylene as they mature and ripen – natural for them, deadly for your

bulbs. While ‘healed in’ they will be receiving natural moisture during a typical late fall and winter, in the refrigerator they will need to have a constant moist media - that typically means potting them in a 6-inch pot or so with a loose potting soil. Unlike planting bulbs in the landscape whereby you would plant the narcissus 3-times the height of the bulb in depth, your bulb should be planted at or near the top of the pot with the tip of the bulb barely exposed. Remember, the fridge is your only resource for the cold treatment if you force for Christmas and New Years since soil temperatures will not be nearly cold enough to give you any aid until well into November. Don’t be afraid to fill that pot up with color with bulbs literally side by side. Once you have gotten your bulbs past the 13-week cold treatment, you are now ready to bring them inside or out of the fridge to begin the actual blooming process. By bringing the temperatures up and increasing the light on the bulb (place them in as much sun as possible), your plant will begin to produce a flower in 3-4 weeks. Once you see a bloom form, feel free to move your plants around the house as a decrease in light will actually extend the blooming period. As for fertilizer, save it – that bulb has all the food it needs for this first bloom right there in its core saved up from the nursery. After your plant has bloomed you are free to plant it in your landscape in the spring. Plant your bulbs using the equation found above of 3-times the height of the bulb in depth and drop a bit of organic fertilizer in the hole while you are planting. Although they may not bloom the next season, rest assured that they will be back, on cycle, the following season. Until our next article, Happy New Year!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine I was running the Charlottesville Marathon several years ago and 25 miles into the race I passed a woman who was running the half marathon that started at the same time. The back of her shirt said: “The miracle isn’t that I finished, the miracle is that I has the courage to start.” I have given this much thought over the last few years. This is a quote from John ‘the Penguin’Bingham who in his mid 40’s changed his lifestyle from sedentary to active. He is now an avid runner and a writer and motivational speaker. Dictionary.com defines courage as the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger or pain without fear. The same website defines change as making the future course different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone. So what does this have to do with health? Many of us would like to change the future course of our health but change is difficult and can be frightening. It is much easier to be resigned to the current course. So what if I don’t exercise today? Who cares if I overeat tonight, or if I drink too much? Every time I try

to quit smoking I fail, so why bother? Most of us have asked these or similar questions in the past. To make change we need to understand ourselves, and why we do the things we do. Understanding what causes our behaviors can allow us to make plans for change. We also need motivation. Maybe you want to see your grandkids graduate. Maybe you want to play ball with the kids or hike to the good fishing holes or deer stands. Maybe you just want to feel better. Change is hard and making long term changes takes courage. Where does this courage come from? That’s tough, because the answer will be different for each of us. The New Year is approaching – as you think about choices and resolutions, be brave. Believe in miracles and have the courage to start! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Have a question for him? Email him at AskTheDr@ nelsoncountylife.com. Resisting Change If I had any vocal talent, I would break into David Bowie’s song, “Ch- Ch- Changes…” but my nine year old daughter pleads with me to lip sync only so I’ll keep my singing confined to the car. Each New Year, we hope for something better to arrive; perhaps a stable economy, perhaps a rosier job or perhaps better health. Each year, we resolve to improve ourselves in some manner. Maybe, we’ll actually keep the New Year’s resolutions we make this year. It is rare that we follow through with the resolutions and maybe it is because we are so talented at resisting change. We make the resolutions because we want to get in better physical shape and lose weight but, heaven forbid, if we have to change anything to reach that goal. W.H. Auden writes: We would rather be ruined than changed; We would rather die in our dread Than climb the cross of the moment And let our illusions die.

It is easier to sit in our discomfort even though we are unhappy than to make a change. It seems crazy but we do it all the time; an unhappy discomfort is still more familiar than the unknown. When we think about changes in our physical body; the physical discomfort from starting an exercise program or going without dessert or changing eating patterns can be very unsettling. Why go there when the piece of cake makes us feel so good for that instant? Each year, we make the resolution to lose weight or start an exercise program because we know that our health is valuable and our health is valuable to those around us. We know it is important; we know it is what we should do. My suggestion this year is to try one change at a time. Set a reasonable goal. When you feel as if you have met that goal, then strive for another. We are so good at criticizing ourselves when we fail because we attempt too many changes at once. Who can manage all that change? It is too uncomfortable. So, we resist

Jami Becker first took to the ice when she was about six years old. Now the manager of the ice skating rink, she has yet to slip and slide at Wintergreen, but plans to. Skating outside for this Fort Lauderdale, Florida girl will be a bit of a change – she’s only ice skated in indoor rinks before. “There have been a lot of inquiries for years about ice skating, so I think there’s a lot of excitement for it,” said Jamie. And more than anything, Jami has been happy to see everyone out on the ice enjoying themselves – she knows that this rink is sure to please. “I was four years old and with my godparents on a pond,” remembers Meredith Hansen, Wintergreen Resort comfort and sales administra-

PAUL PURPURA

Desiree LaRoche grew up in Michigan with homemade mittens. She skated, but it was no easy task for her and her friends to get on the ice. “It was about a half mile from my house and probably about 0 degrees,” she said. But it gets even colder: “We had to shovel the snow off first.” But no matter how cold it got, the skating was worth it and when they got too cold, they’d head home to warm up. “We’d wrap our hands in towels and cry because we had practically frostbitten our fingers and toes but the next day we were out there again,” remembered Desiree, who works in Wintergreen Resort’s Ski Information Office and recently took to the ice after a 20-year intermission. She said it took a while for her legs to get used to skating, but her body seemed to remember after a while. “You just start going again and it is coming right back,” said Desiree, who is really excited about the new rink. “Having more to do outdoors is just always perfect because I remember my life … we were outdoors all the time and I think it’s special, you know? It’s just special.”

If you’re not one to hit the slopes, you can now hit the rink. New to Wintergreen Resort this winter is Shamokin Ice, an outdoor skating rink. Before it opened to the public, several Resort staffers gave Shamokin a test run. And boy, did skating on ice bring back some memories. PAUL PURPURA

tive assistant. “That’s one of my first memories with my godparents.” She said she took to skating pretty naturally as a child, but now that she’s grown she realizes that a good ice skater needs to be very patient. Meredith, who took those first few glides in Roanoke, said she’s carried this memory with her always, but it’s been about 10 years since she last skated. And how did she think she fared during her first trip down memory lane on ice? “Practice makes perfect, for sure,” she said. “But it’s nice to laugh at yourself and to laugh at everyone else. Just the good spirit of it all.” Cooking and skating both require balance, says Joe Bissonnette, a sous chef at Devil’s Grill at Wintergreen Resort. “And both things are exciting,” said Joe, a Michigan native who was a frequent skater – he even played ice hockey – before moving to Virginia in 2003. He’s been spending the last seven years working on his skiing techniques and on one ski-filled day, Joe had only had his skis off for about five minutes before slipping on some skates. “It’s a little bit like skiing except that it took a few minutes for me to cross over my feet again,” he said. “I was nervous at first, but by the time I got out there … it’s like riding a bike.” “One of my childhood idols was Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins,” said Marvin White, Director of Sales at Wintergreen Resort. “I grew up in Boston and everyone that grew up in Massachusetts was an ice skater.” Starting in early December, Marvin and his friends would head out with hockey gear, place their goals atop a frozen pond and go at it. Now, decades later, Marvin is most looking forward to taking his 7-year-old daughter skating. And the best part is that it’ll be an outdoor rink – just like the one he learned to skate on. “You couldn’t ask for a better setting.” NCL

Life’s final months deserve specialized care “Taking care of my mother at home during her terminal illness was difficult. My wife and I felt inadequate, and that brought feelings of guilt. So we turned to Hospice of the Piedmont for help. Their specialists provided all the expert support we needed. They kept mother’s pain under control and even delivered her prescriptions to our home. Later, she moved to their Hospice House for full-time professional care and lived her final weeks to their fullest.
