I remember when Angelo the cat brought us a bunny. We didn’t take a picture of that.

If genes have anything to do with it, Peyton’s natural Mohawk will begin to flatten out like Adam’s did in about a month. Which means we are taking pictures like crazy because she won’t have a Mohawk again until she rebels against us. Mohawks, yes.

Extra piercings, no.

Peyton’s getting to the point that she wants to be a big kid, if you can imagine. At the dinner table, her eyes double from the size of almonds to walnuts as she lusts for the food we put in our mouths. I gave her some overturned-apple-truck-in-Tyro applesauce the other day but she spit it out. It will come.

She probably wouldn’t mind having what was on her brother’s plate the other night: pork chops, roasted potatoes and broccoli. How do you get a little boy to eat his meat and potatoes? Not that we’re complaining.

I’m sure he’ll eat the potatoes later this year when we dig them up from our garden. At that point, they will

be raw, crunchy and smothered with dirt. Just like Adam.

The other day, daddy took Adam for a gentlemans’ lunch and surprisingly, he did very well. He took his pals, Bert and Ernie, with him. After finishing his meal, Adam began tilling the soil using Ernie and Bert as hoes. After a ride in the washer, the two are sunbathing together on the deck.

If they stick around long enough, Adam might bring them a bunny.

Identifying Grape Varieties Part I When I lived in Paris, I did a quick, intensive Master’s in London where I had to stay for the course of that year.

Missing my adoptive city, I’d return as often to Paris as my studies allowed.

Once I popped over the channel for a weekend fix and trotted directly to one of my favorite wine bars, Ma Bourgogne under the arcades of the elegant and classical Place des Vosges. This was in November, just after Beaujolais Nouveau Day and the festive spirit of that happy day that kicks off the European holiday season was still all around…but so too were bucketfuls of Beaujolais Primeur, needing to be consumed quickly.

I sat and ordered my meal and a carafe of the house Côtes du Rhône.

I loved the simple carafes the wines came in, made of cracked glass without labels or extra adornment. When the waiter brought me the carafe, I thought the wine looked exceptionally purple, but I had only to take the first sniff to discern that this was not the Côtes du Rhône I’d ordered but yesterday’s now tired Beaujolais

which they were trying to pawn off on the unsuspecting tourist with the thick American accent. I sniffed and said politely in French, “I’m so sorry, this is Beaujolais; I asked for Côtes du Rhône.” And there folks, was probably my greatest coup in wine tasting.

I like to tell that story to wine enthusiasts and always get the same response. “I’d love to be able to do that.” Well, you can. Anyone can.

While this is a lovely little story, the truth of it is that Gamay, the grape from which Beaujolais is made, is instantly recognizable. Anyone, who has every smelled and tasted, and paid attention while doing so can pick out the Gamay grape. And anyone who’s ever had just a titch too much Beaujolais during the Nouveau revelry can recognize it three cafés away. But no names here. Certain varietals (this is the fancy name for grape varieties) are more recognizable than others. My wine tasters, for instance, can tell Gamay and Pinot Noir immediately…and just by sniffing, not even tasting. So let’s begin with the easy, aromatic grapes.

Gamay –Wines made from Gamay tend to be light-colored, often with

a strong blue tinge which provides a first clue before smelling (or ‘nosing’ in wine-tasting parlance.) Adjectives used to describe the aroma include “fresh” and “fruity” while many Beaujolais, the wine most associated with Gamay, can result in potent banana aromas. If smelling Beaujolais Nouveau, in addition to banana notes, look also for boiled candy, pear and nail polish on the nose. To get started, begin with a young Touraine from the Loire or a Beaujolais. Try G. Descombes, Brouilly - Smell and look for the above aromas. If none of these descriptors fit, come up with your own original terms that you can lock into your brain and remember. And always have fun.

Oh, and the waiter’s face when I made my pronouncement? Perhaps, I caught an initial look of surprise, but if he was stunned, he quickly hid his surprise and promptly brought me that rough and ready Côtes du Rhône which I’d been dreaming about in London.

There’s an unspoken language between a cow and his owner.

Donnie Truslow is fluent in it.

And so is Temple Grandin.

We can’t think of many celebrities we’d chase for a story. But Temple Grandin happens to be one of them.

An autistic woman who’s made a career from studying the behavior of cows, her story became an HBO movie that earned Claire Danes a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of the woman many people consider a genius.

Knowing that the Virginia Forage and Grassland Council had booked her for this year’s Winter Forage Beef Conference, we knew Temple would have to pass through Nelson County to attend speaking engagements in Madison Heights and Weyer’s Cave.

What better place to meet than at the intersection of Routes 6 and 151? The property of Jim and Louise Whitley, River Run Farm is home to Donnie Truslow’s cows.

“It just kind of started off as a hobby and then it wound up the hobby got bigger,” said Donnie Truslow. He bought his herd from Hughes Swain in 1992 as he was retiring as Nelson County’s extension agent.

“I have 33 brood cows and 13 of them had calves and I have one herd bull and then behind the house I’ve got 18 heifers.”

Do the math and Donnie’s got his hands full.

But there’s more to raising cattle than feeding and maintaining fences. If you ask Hughes, he’ll tell you cows can be a lot like people.

“There’s a lot of differences in the way you handle cattle,” Hughes says. “If you know a lot of people and different people and watch them some times, you’ll see a lot of differences. And sometimes you’ll find people that holler and knock and beat and stuff like that in cattle.They don’t stand for that.”

As Donnie, Hughes, Jim and the cows huddle behind a ridge that acts as a natural wind block,

Temple’s story of life as an autistic woman who made a career out of studying animal behavior was recently made into an HBO movie, Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes. Grandin has authored several books, including Humane Livestock Handling which includes drawings for corral designs and information on cattle behavior during handling.

Temple is making her way up Route 6 in a rented minivan driven by Culpeper County extension agent Carl Stafford. Though the HBO movie undoubtedly boosted her popularity, Hughes knows exactly why she’s in demand among the cattle crowd.

“Her reputation has followed her all over the livestock industry. She’s been a leader in animal behavior, and particularly with cattle.”

Though there’s a science to humane cattle management, Hughes hints at something bigger he can’t quite put his finger on. The cows have turned to look at us, as if they know we’re talking about them.

“I don’t know exactly what the theory is, but you have to be quiet and easy with them. And if you do that, why, you can have ‘em.”

As Temple’s ride rolls up, we meet her at the farm entrance and hop into Hughes’ SUV to ride back to the ridge. There, she and Donnie begin walking downhill and are quickly out of sight.

continued from page 11 For about 20 minutes, Temple roamed the pasture with Donnie and liked what she saw. The cows looked healthy. And for those of you who know how the land lays at River Run Farm, the mountain views, Temple said, were remarkable.

Temple and Donnie’s chat shifted to design, in particular, Temple’s preferred design of round bale feeders.

“Instead of just having the regular straight bars on the slant holes, they had kind of an ‘S’ shape. They said it wastes less hay ... about 10 percent less hay. This brings up the whole thing that sometimes a very simple modification of a design can make a big difference in how much hay you waste.”

Donnie cuts his own hay and says if he had to buy it – he feeds between 500 to 600 rolls a year – he’d be leaving a lot of money on the table. For newer farmers starting out with their first herd, expenses can be daunting, Hughes says. When he became the extension agent in 1956, raising cattle was easier, moneywise.

“Then it was fruit, apples and peaches, but we also had a big cattle operation. It’s now at this point in time, probably down around 13, 12 [thousand]. People have gone out of cattle. Farming is not a real lucrative business. The production costs have gone so high and the cost a farmer receives for his products has also increased, but not at the same pace.”

For frugal farmers starting small, Temple has some advice.

“Well, obviously they can’t get in and get totally expensive with equipment, but I think there’s a few basics I think you’ve got to have. A single file alley with a head gate on the end of it. You’ve got to have something to put cattle in so that you can doctor them. Some people have been advocating these dart gun like things but the problem with that is it absolutely wrecks meat when you shoot animals with these things. I think a head gate is something you need to have. Not those fancy corrals.”

Using lumber Jim milled from the property, Donnie and his brother, Calvin, have built a simple cattle chute with the head gate Temple’s

talking about. Donnie and Calvin’s design includes a clever hinged gate at the end that keeps Donnie from having to climb on the boards to handle a cow if needs to.

“And another principle is taking your animals and just have them walk through the head gate,” Temple says. “You know, get them trained to go through the head gate and they’re going to get treats. And then they’re going to be easier to get in. Because if the animals voluntarily cooperate with handling, you don’t have to have really fancy facilities.”

It’s no coincidence Temple’s science-based philosophy regarding animal behavior often intersects with her philosophy in dealing with autism. As portrayed in the movie, Temple’s mother was a firm and patient woman. Good farmers tend to be firm, yet patient as well.

“I try to combine my personal experiences with the real practical scientific information – do the same thing with livestock.

“I want to teach animals to move quietly, you know. If you’ve been in a cow herd, I want to teach them to

transfer from one pasture to another in a quiet manner. But then, on the other hand, I want to teach them manners. I can’t have them jumping on a four-wheeler to get supplement off the back of a four-wheeler. That can be really dangerous.”

Sounding a bit like a wise parent, cows, Temple says, need to be taught manners.

“They’re not going to get the feed until they stand nice. Pushing and shoving, we can’t have that. And you get in very bad habits racing from one place to another. You want to not let that get started. Call them in.

Make them stand. Then you open the gate and they got to go by you and go by you quietly.”

So contrary to popular belief, you don’t always treat cattle like cattle, so to speak. The rough, loud ways of Midwestern feed lots are foreign here.

“It’s a process you learn about handling,” Hughes says in a quiet voice. “I don’t think it’s written down in the books.”

Donnie Truslow and his brother Calvin built this cattle chute using native lumber. Such a device with a head gate mounted at one end is a must-have for small cattle farmers, Temple Grandin says. Training cows to walk through the head gate and receiving treats at the end is one way to accustom them to the process. Humane handling methods, Temple says, are not only kinder to the animals but it produces better meat. Though some people advocate the use of dart guns for handling, Temple says repeated shooting damages the meat.

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge and the sparkle of freshly fallen snow in the valleys.

Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and ski. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views!

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color.

This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful winter views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows.

The simple yet extremely effective solution is window film. Window film is also known as window tinting. This is how window film works. If it’s been a while since you’ve stepped inside the Nellysford IGA, now’s the time to run out of milk and head on over.

For a while now, the IGA has been reinventing itself – thanks in no small part to a man named Jim Blackwell.

In fact, you may have seen a recent IGA promotion featuring a Blackwell Family Super Bowl Favorite.

Jim, who retired recently from a 44-year career with grocery chain Ukrops, came to Nelson for a chance to make a difference.

“I felt like there was an opportunity for me to come up here and to help out,” said Jim, who was skeptical at first. “But after coming up and meeting with Joe Lee and his family, I decided that I wanted to take on this challenge and hopefully I could really help them be successful.”

And so far, so good, says Jim. He said his goal is not for the Nellsyford IGA to be just a convenience store, but to be a true community grocery store.

“And what that really means is we’re adding variety,” he said. “And not just adding [any] products, but adding products that people want.”

In addition to the physical face life, which includes lots of additional products, full shelves, end caps on existing shelves (bought from Ukrops), and a brand new hot foods department, new and returning customers should expect some new, more accurate pricing and a very different feeling to come from the IGA experience.

“We’re trying to make sure we have a great deal of warmth for our customers,” said Jim. “We want this to be a great shopping experience for them.”

And if they don’t carry something? Well, just ask Jim or the store manager and you just might be surprised what shows up on the shelves in a few weeks.

“If we don’t have the item, then we’re going to take a look at getting the product,” he said.

“We’re right on top of that. We’re making the phone call back and letting them know that we’re getting that item in and it’ll be on the shelf.”

Now that doesn’t mean they can carry everything that a superstore can. The store got a pretty great makeover, but it’s still pretty small.

“You know, we are a certain size store – not a big store by any means,” said Jim. “But we can certainly look into it and make sure that if we don’t carry it, we have an alternative.

One of Jim’s goals is to help local customers by making that weekly trip out of the county unnecessary – at least when it comes to groceries. The IGA has about 125 in-store specials every week that Jim feels makes the tiny – but now very well-stocked – store competitive.

“To drive all the way out to Charlottesville or someplace like that to shop, that doesn’t make sense,” he said, but people need their food and he said the IGA is now the place to get it. “What we want to do is make sure that when people come in here, they feel great and if they have 15 things on their shopping list, we want them to get 15-plus things. We don’t want them to go out of here with 12 or 10 things and have to go somewhere else to get two or three. It is very, very important to us that we keep our shelves in great shape.” NCL

Charitable Intentions When I meet with clients, I particularly enjoy hearing of their charitable intentions - this is one area where each of us can make a difference in an area that is important to us. And, donations are deductible for those that itemize deductions - thus, the U.S. Treasury is supplementing our donations. As many of us are busy this month putting together those important tax deductions, here are a few tips on maximizing your charitable contributions.

Who – only contributions to religious organizations and public charities recognized by the IRS are deductible. If in doubt, check the IRS website at www.IRS.gov. Donations to political organizations or to private fund raisers (such as for victims of accidents) are not deductible.

You might also want to verify the integrity of an organization. A good source for this information can be found at www.Guidestar.org.

What – anything (almost)! Of course, cash donations that are properly documented by canceled check or charge statement are deductible.

You must have a written acknowledgement from the charity for gifts of $250 or more. If you receive any benefit from your donation (such as tickets to ball games or dinner), you must deduct the value of these benefits from your donation.

You may also deduct out-of-pocket expenses incurred on behalf of a charity. Examples of this include travel, supplies, uniforms, and postage. Use of your auto is deductible at the rate of 14 cents per mile plus tolls and parking.

Most non-cash contributions are deductible at their fair market value.

Donations to thrift stores should be documented with an itemized list and a receipt from the charity. Estimated values of thrift store items can be obtained on the internet – or just check out the prices at your local thrift store.

Most donations of vehicles are limited to $500, since charities usually auction these items to turn them into cash. You may deduct the full value of the vehicle if the organization utilizes it in furtherance of their

exempt function - either the organization retains the vehicle and utilizes it for their use or they transfer the vehicle to a needy individual. You will need documentation from the organization to substantiate the proper deduction.

If you have a large pledge to satisfy, consider making a donation of appreciated stocks. You will avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation and you can deduct the full value of the donation.

If you are over age 70 ½, you may direct all or part of your Required Minimum IRA Distribution to be paid directly to a charity. This avoids the income tax on the distribution, but you may not also claim a charitable donation for the amount. This provision expires at the end of 2011.

When – Donations are deducted in the year paid by check or credit card.

Be sure any acknowledgements that you receive note the correct year.

Regardless of the rules, we encourage you to donate and become involved in your favorite charitable organizations.

Even though this market may favor buyers, achieving a favorable outcome still requires prospective home owners to make some tough calls. If you plan to buy a home in 2011, here are a few key tips to consider so that you quite literally make the right move!

Select the right agent. Any agent can show a home, but can that agent provide advice and guidance that protects the buyer’s best interest?

Sellers will frequently interview agents to determine the most qualified candidate. However, buyers often select the person who just so happens to be at the right place at the right time. When simply going with the individual whose name is on the sign, the greeter at the open house or the friendly face on floor duty, the buyer may be settling for convenience rather than qualifications. Research the web and local print publications, seek a referral from a local resident or business

owner, or at the very least call several agents to better understand who knows the area and has the expertise to do the job. Make sure that the agent is working on your behalf. A buyer’s agent agreement ensures that the selected agent will work to obtain the best possible terms for the buyer.

Make the right preparations.

Know your budget capabilities and limitations. Buyers should get preapproved before starting the home search. Pre-approval clearly indicates what the buyer can afford. It also strengthens a buyer’s position with a seller by validating that there should not be any “insurmountable” financing obstacles.

Identify the right home. Establish timelines, acceptable price points, location parameters, and property preferences that clearly identify “hope to have” as opposed to “must have” features. If getting a bargain is the driving force, ask the agent to identify

deals and/or steals. These aggressively priced properties, often short sales or foreclosures, may not meet all of the buyer preferences, but can provide a great investment opportunity, especially if the prospective purchaser can see beyond a home’s imperfections.

Negotiate the right terms. In cooperation with the real estate professional, set a plan of action that will meet your targeted terms. A comparative market analysis (CMA) is not just a seller tool; it can also guide buyers and ensure that the offer is in line with similar sold properties. While price is critical, it is not the only deciding factor for a seller, so make the other offer requests work for you, and not against you. Don’t try to negotiate everything, instead negotiate the essentials, the things that really make a difference to you and your bottom line. Who cares if you get the lawn mower if you pay more than the home is worth? Hence, don’t clutter the contract so that the

essentials are lost in translation. For example, if getting the home at a discounted price is the primary goal, keep the rest of the offer clean. A quick closing with few contingencies can help motivate a seller. If you are a buyer strapped for cash and need to have seller paid closing costs, then make sure that is your primary point of negotiation. An offer has to entice the seller to sell, and even in this market, sellers still say no.

Once the contract is ratified, partner with the agent to ensure that you meet all of the contractual obligations and deadlines. And, when the house is your home, plan to stay at least 5-7 years!

Curtis Matthews can tell some great stories, but he lets his fingers do much of the talking. He is widely considered Nelson County’s premiere banjo picker, having developed a unique style since he began playing as a youngster. Now 78 years old, and still active in the logging business, his truest love, besides his wife Janice and son David, is playing the banjo.

Although he came from a musical family – his mother played piano and his brother the harmonica - his first venture with a musical instrument was not auspicious.

“I was ten or twelve years old and I was out splitting some wood for our cook stove and all of a sudden I pulled up a stick and I said ‘This looks like the neck of a fiddle.’“ He doesn’t know how he got that in his head – the family did not own a fiddle, though some relatives played them.

“I forgot about cutting wood and got me an old cigar box and stuck the wood to the box so I had a neck and body. I got little pegs to put the strings on but I didn’t have any strings. I went to the back porch and ripped off some screen wire and put four strings on. Then I needed to make me a bow so I got a peach tree limb. I had heard people say something about horse hair. I had a horse so I pulled some hair out of the horse’s tail and put it on that thing.”

He could not, however, get the fiddle to make any musical sounds. “I had heard someone say they put resin on the bow but we didn’t have any. So I got some molasses and put that on it. The sound kept getting worse.” The climax of the story?

“My mother found out I had torn the screen on the back porch and I got a good whippin’.” continued on page 30

On March 19, at Nelson County High School auditorium, a number of musicians Matthews has played with over the years, including Jimmy Fortune of Statler Brothers fame, will gather to honor a man many consider to be their mentor with a concert that kicks off Oakland Museum’s Nelson Music Project.

The goal is an exhibit at Oakland tracing the county’s musical heritage and the Matthews tribute is the first in a series of events to explore some of the many musical genres played in the county. The theme will be “Music By and For the People of Nelson County.”

“Curtis helped so many people,” Fortune says.

“None of us would be where they are without him.

He’s a big reason I got my big break. He taught me to keep my nose clean – stay away from drugs and alcohol. That’s one reason the Statler Brothers took me on.”

Among the other musicians who will play with Matthews are members of the Allen family, although they live in the Shenandoah Valley now, they are originally from Nelson. Matthews played with Carver Allen, now deceased, who lived in Wheelers Cove, which is not far from Woods Mill, where Matthews lived. “A fine man,” Matthews

remembers. “He and his brother played the fiddle and banjo in perfect harmony.”

He also remembers that 22-year-old Carver Allen was out plowing a field and was taking a break when he saw the preacher come by in a shiny buggy. “Carver got to talking to himself – ‘where is that preacher going? Oh my goodness, I’m supposed to be getting married.’”

Matthews was in a band with other talented musicians from Wheelers Cove, members of the Fortune family – George Thomas, who played guitar, and his brother Dabney, who played mandolin. “George decided he wanted to play the fiddle and later learned how to make them,” Matthews says. His son David plays a George Thomas Fortune fiddle.

Back in the day, Matthews and his cohorts played “home dances” all around the county. “They would remove all the furniture from the living room and if the crowd was too large they would choose some of the couples to dance. We’d play ‘Soldier’s Joy’ for couple number one and then couple number two and so on to couple 25. We had to play ‘Soldier’s Joy’ for a long time.”

After playing it for perhaps an hour or so, Matthews remembers, “we stopped and then this guy who was a little drunk came up to us and said he’d sure like to hear us play ‘Soldier’s Joy.’” Matthews can tell dozens, maybe hundreds of stories like that one. He has played with musi-

cians at fiddlers’ conventions and in many different bands. “I was at a fiddlers’ convention and met Ted Lawhorne from the Shenandoah Valley and he was just learning to play the fiddle. We were at a jam session and Ted said he only knew two or three tunes and I said we’d play those two or three tunes as long as he wanted to. It was positive way of looking at it and it encouraged him to stay with the fiddle. He later played on stage at the Grand Ol’ Opry.”

Matthews’ recollections of the musical scene in the county dating back to the 30s, 40s and 50s includes encounters with the Carter family, who stayed in Faber for a few weeks, with Don Reno, who played in Lovingston, and the square dances he played with the Fortunes in the old Quonset hut in Lovingston. He also taught and played with Eddie Witt, once the track coach at Nelson County High School and then at James Madison University. Witt, who has played in Nashville with Phil Vasser, will be among those gathering to honor Matthews on March 19.

Matthews can demonstrate different styles of banjo playing, and he did so at a recent interview with local musician Jimbo Cary. The interview, which includes many of the stories above, was recorded on video for the Nelson Music Project and will be part of the musical heritage exhibit at Oakland, as will a DVD of the March 19 concert. Pruning 101 Proper and timely pruning inquires are perhaps some the most frequently asked questions poised to me before, after and during a landscape installation. If you read an article about pruning on the internet or in a magazine you will find as many different concepts as you do articles. The basics are both determined by the plant and how it grows, when it flowers, and for me, the aesthetics of the landscape – mainly I like blooms that linger, even though they are dead, well into the end of winter. Here are some basic rules that may help when you pick up those shears this year.

One of the most basic rules of pruning is called the ‘May Rule of Pruning’. If a plant blooms before May 1st prune it as soon as its flowers are spent - early spring flowers, before May 1st are produced on last year’s woody growth and obviously pruning before the bloom will remove the current bloom buds. Examples: Azalea, Camellia, Forsythia, Rhododendron, Spirea. If a plant blooms after May 1st, prune it before it flowers – typically in the late winter (late February / early March).

Summer flowers produced after May 1 are on new woody growth and pruning stimulates new growth and therefore greater flower production.

Examples: Crape Myrtle, Hydrangea (panicle type). When in doubt, look at the buds - large, bloom-type buds (typically swollen and much larger than ordinary buds) should not be pruned off until the plant blooms.

Routine maintenance or ‘cleaning up’ of plants that do not bloom is something that I like to do in late February. This is to reduce the time that one has to look at that ugly pruning cut – the closer you get to when the plant begins to grow, the less time you have to look at the cut (which in my opinion, as necessary as it is, is never attractive). This

includes many varieties such as liriope, boxwood, roses, English laurel, etc. When pruning shrubs, always look at the overall shape of the plant and take out any branches that compete with the rounded shape that you are trying to create. Long weak growth or ‘suckers’, known for growing 2-3 feet a year and congest the inside branching structure of the plant, should be completely removed at this time as well. Rarely will you need to cut ALL branches on any shrub except if you are trying to keep a plant in a tight shape (boxwood) or if you are pruning a rose.

A note on roses - I have never had any ill-effects from pruning most roses, especially ‘Knock-Out’ roses, late in the winter.

When pruning young trees such as Oak, Maple, Dogwood, etc., always carefully examine the branching structure of the tree and take out any limbs that are growing into other limbs, those that criss-cross from one side to the other and those that are competing, where applicable, with the leader. Also continue to cut lower limbs, where applicable, so that the tree both begins to develop the characteristic large head found with many shade tree canopies and does not impede routine maintenance (i.e. mowing, weeding, etc.).

The cut on the tree should always be about ½ inch or so from the main trunk, outside of a swollen area where the limb leaves the trunk, as it helps the tree heal itself faster.

Never use ‘healing solutions’, such as tar, to paint onto the wound as this only increases the humidity inside of the wound and invites insects to bore into this area to ‘raise a family’.

When in doubt, research, read and watch. Proper pruning is not difficult, it just takes patience and some basic rules.

Gluten is a protein in foods that are processed from wheat, barley and rye.

It gives foods a chewy texture and is part of the reason that bread is so good!

Gluten is an additive in many foods, such as imitation meats, and is often used in vegetarian or vegan foods.

Celiac Disease causes damage to the lining of the small intestine as a result of the body’s reaction to gluten.

This prevents absorption of some nutrients. Celiac disease may develop at any point in life and is being diagnosed with increasing frequency.

It often runs in families and people with Celiac Disease are more likely to suffer from other illnesses. It is estimated that 1 in 133 American’s have Celiac Disease.

The gastrointestinal symptoms of Celiac Disease vary. A person might have abdominal pain, a change in appetite, gassiness or bloating, nausea or vomiting. They may have unexplained weight loss. There may be diarrhea or constipation. Stools may float, be bloody or fatty and foul

smelling. There can be symptoms not related to the GI system. These can include easy bruising, anemia, depression, skin conditions, muscle cramps and pain. These symptoms are not specific to Celiac Disease.

The first step in diagnosis is to suspect the disease. Blood tests for certain antibodies can help make the diagnosis. An upper endoscopy may be done to biopsy the small intestine to make the final diagnosis.

A gluten free diet treats Celiac Disease. It is not cured but damage to the intestine usually heals after several months. Eating a gluten free diet is very challenging. Some foods put on their labels whether or not they contain gluten. There are even cooking magazines specifically for gluten free foods! Celiac Disease has received a lot of media attention recently. “Instead of going ‘Arrrggg,’ I’m out there going ‘Ahhhh,’” said Seay Harshaw Delgado, using her voice and her music, as she often does, to explain why it’s important for her – as a singer/songwriter and as a citizen of the world – to sing for peace.

“I don’t know, I think about being a force for good in the world,” she explained. “I feel called that way. I feel that God works through me and with me in what I create.”

And Nelson County is one place that keeps her singing for good. Seay has been all around the world. But everything keeps coming back here.

Born in Charlottesville and currently living in Nashville, Seay still considers the Blue Ridge her home. Growing up, she listened to a lot of vocal music, but she says she was definitely a child of the ‘80s and was moonwalking with Michael Jackson.

Her varied listening styles inspired her to create a vast repertoire of songs of her own.

“I’ve got country songs, I’ve got R&B songs, I’ve got pop songs, and jazz,” she said. Even then she was moving toward the more artistic, but after the death of a friend about 10 years ago, she decided to refocus her energies and sing for peace and for healing. One album in particular, A Winter Blessing, has several Blue Ridge-inspired songs.

Seay has lived in Nashville for about 15 years now and has worked on a number of exciting projects there. Currently, on top of trying to release her own follow-up records, she’s working with country singer Clay Walker on some soundtrack pieces for a film called Alone Yet Not Alone which is set to be released next fall.

Even in all that excitement, one of the things that Seay enjoys most about her work is hearing from people around the world that have been touched by her music.

“It’s not so far anymore,” she said. “We live in a global community and you can connect with anyone or anything or any place, anywhere. All around the world.”

But from anywhere, all around the world, these mountains in Nelson County – particularly along the Blue Ridge Parkway – is the only place Seay calls home.

“This is the only place that I get grounded or get balanced,” she said. “There’s an energy here. You feel it. There’s just something here that’s really special and you feel it and you want to be in this energy.” NCL
