from thepublishers Whether your roots to this land are indigenous or Old World, we can probably agree to this universal: there is something very primal about visiting a place on a map where water overlaps land. And if your toddler can be free to streak naked and run around like a wild thing, even better. Do I cringe every time the boy wriggles out of the belted seat of the shopping cart so that he can chase the bananas riding down the conveyor belt? Sure I do. Or when he asks for water at a restaurant and turns it over on himself because cold water feels mighty fine on a hot summer day? Of course . At our special place at the Bay, little boys are free to chase the geese that float and bob along the shoreline (picture, pg. 34). And if he gets a little hot, he can raise that bucket of salty water and dump it on himself. That’s what its there for. You can pass the time picking at the crusty barnacles that gather on the bulkheads. That’s what they’re there for. Soft enough to cushion weary feet, Mother Nature’s sand is gritty enough to give you a fine pedicure. That’s what it’s there for. The phone in the cottage doesn’t

ring because there isn’t one. Steamed crabs are cheap because this is where you get them. Sun and water make you sleepy. All three are very good for you. Many people don’t like this place because there’s not much to do. We like it because there’s not much to do. Pour me a drink. The kids are napping. We did absolutely nothing on our summer vacation. Following the footsteps of the past, Domaine Grand Veneur When a thin, pale seventy-two year old man decided to move to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the destiny of this corner of the Rhône Valley was forever changed. The man looked as though he had only a few months left to live, but for sixteen more years his dynamic character drove him not only to build a château more like a fortress than a palace but to plant a vineyard. All of this would be unimportant if the man in question was not John XXII, the second of the Avignon Popes, a man with enough respect to lead others to follow his example in the vineyard. Following in the footsteps of the wine-loving pope and this historical section of France, Mathieu Jaume decided in 1826 to grow vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and successive generations of the Jaume family have followed. In 1979 Alain and Odile carried on the tradition with the creation of Grand Veneur and a small 22 acre plot of land. Today the estate covers 170 acres and sons Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking

over from their father. Domaine Grand Veneur was yet another winery we visited on a trip already packed full of vineyard visits. We were lucky enough to be treated to a sumptuous tasting of all the appellations complemented by regional cheeses and charcuterie. And if it wasn’t enough that Christophe was generous in sharing both his wines and his passion, we were also taken out into the vineyards to see the rocky, scruffy soils on which this famous wine thrives. It also didn’t hurt that Christophe was tall, dark and handsome and that, together with his enthusiasm and passion for his work, was enough for a couple ladies in the group to desire to have his children. Alaine Jaume Vacqueyras, Grand Garrigue, 2009 – Long a special favourite, Vacqueyras is both rustic yet polished, rugged yet beautiful. The 2009 is especially lush, 2009 being a very fruit-forward, new-worldy kind of year. Think blue and black fruit: blueberries, blackberries, plums, figs, but also garrigue and lavender. Villages, ‘Les Champauvins’ 2008 – When we drove out in the vineyard to see the unique Châteauneuf terroir, Christophe took us down a lane. He asked us to look to the left, then to the right. We did. He asked if we could see any difference in the soil. We could not. It looked pretty inhospitable to growing anything other vines. And in fact there was not much difference, an arbitrary demarcation, yet on our right was AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape and on our left ‘Les Champauvins.’ In other words with the outstanding, silken ‘Les Champauvins’ your getting Châteauneuf taste at a Côtes-duRhônes price. $19 Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-duPape, ‘Les Origines’ – Opulent, rich and delicious. Richard Moore came to Lake Monacan for the first time as a 12-yearold boy scout from Lynchburg. The year was 1948 or 1949 and the lake was brand new. “The biggest thrill for us kids was to walk through the spillway with the water running through it,” said Richard, who is better known to current lake-goers as “Frog.” And the lake was still a thrill for him when he moved to Nelson in 1978 to be part of the start of the Wintergreen Police. “It was like coming home in a sense,” he said. These days, Frog lives right on Lake Monocan. Both his house and the lake are part of Wintergreen. In the house that he remembers as the old scout master’s cabin, he spends his days watching wildlife, talking to locals, and hanging out with visitors to the lake. “I can’t remember ‘em all, but I have had quite a few people that came up here as boy scouts and they like to visit and tell old war stories about scouting,” said Frog. Sarah Shelton, the manager at Basic Necessities in Nellysford, has spent the past twelve years making visits to Frog’s cabin, fishing in the pond behind Frog’s home.

“We would come over here and sit on the front porch and smoke cigarettes and look at photos and I’d wander down to the lake,” said Sarah, who doesn’t smoke those cigarettes anymore. “And then we’d go fishing and come back when it got near dark and sit in his house and play cribbage for an hour or two and then go home at night. It’s always been fun.” On a recent visit to see Frog, Sarah said he’s a bit of a fixture around Lake Monocan and while she can’t get over to see him as often as she used to, she still often remembers watching the wildlife from his front porch.

“It’s just so calm. [Frog] has tons of pictures of when we would sit on the porch at night and raccoons would walk up in the yard, and deer,” she said. “You can’t get that anywhere else.” One of Frog’s favorite things to do is relax on his front porch – whether he’s entertaining locals, visitors, or just the surrounding wildlife.

“I can enjoy just sitting here,” said Frog. “Just feeling next to nature – and I do see a lot of wildlife. It’s nothing for a deer to walk up in the yard. At one point I had a beaver path through the yard!”

Frog was an officer for the Wintergreen Police back in the late ‘70s. Friends and strangers alike recently pitched in to make some much-needed repairs to the modest lake-front cottage he calls home.

Over the years, Frog’s house got a little beat up, so a bunch of locals banded together to work on the house for him. A team from Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Greenwood and a group of Stoney Creek friends and neighbors have been working on the cabin – some doing the hard labor (when it’s not raining or in the high 90s!), and many others bringing food and drinks or helping to fund the project. After decades of living in the house, Frog said he’s met a number of generous people, but the ones who’ve donated their time and spend long, hard days fixing up his home top his list. “I really couldn’t believe it at first,” he said. “I couldn’t believe how hard they worked and how much they put into it.” Though the house is old and the lake is different, Frog wouldn’t go anywhere else. As the son of the house’s first tenant told him once, Lake Monocan is a magical place. “Ever since then I’ve weighed that thought and it is. It’s like a magical spot,” said Frog. “It’s different every day.” NCL

As the unofficial mascot of the Animal House Ball, Nelson the twoyear-old (mostly) yellow lab is pretty well-known in the county for which he was named. Nelson, who was found wandering on a road and turned in to Animal Control, got picked up by Almost Home, fostered, and finally adopted in October 2009, sharing a home with five kitties – also adopted, and, of course, his humans. Nelson’s humans, Krista Waibel and Andy Burdetsky, have an obvious soft spot for animals in need of a home, but Nelson is the couple’s first dog. And they fell in love with him right away. But Andy said his name needed some tweaking. “They had named him Clifford and his is not a ‘Clifford,’” he said. “He is a Nelson.” After about a year and a half of living with Nelson, Krista (who is on the Almost Home Board of Directors) and Andy (who is in a blues band) decided to start some musical fundraisers for the no-kill shelter. In March, they held a fundraiser at the Rockfish Valley Community Center and raised about $4,000. When that worked so splendidly, they decided to go bigger. The Summertime Rockin’ Blues will be at Pharsalia on August 6 from 3 to 7 p.m. with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance

and can be purchased through the Pharsalia website (www.pharsaliaevents.com). Live music will be provided by Pure Blind Luck, Karl Stoll and the Locals, Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs, the band Andy plays with. There will be food and beverages for sale and all the proceeds from food and admission will be split evenly between Almost Home, the Nelson County Community Fund, and a fund that will help improve the historic grounds of Pharsalia. Along with Robert Ballard and his wife, Susan Viemeister, Andy and Krista have been working hard to minimize costs (by, for example, building a stage instead of buying one!) to maximize donations. “Our main goal is to get as many people as we can; 300 to 500 people,” said Andy. “This is going to be a really fun thing.” And it’s for a great bunch of causes. Nelson, as somewhat of a mascot, might make an appearance but pets are not going to be allowed at the event. That doesn’t mean, however, that there won’t be any dogs around. Almost Home will be bringing dogs – and, if it’s not too hot, some cats – who are up for adoption. But let’s hope Nelson doesn’t have to get too close to those kitties. “He’s afraid to death of ‘em,” said Krista. “As it should be.” NCL

The dog days of summer are here. I want to lose the heat and keep my furniture and floors from fading. But can I keep my views? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. It’s now called the Nelson Community Day – with the concept of community being the focus of the day. According to the census bureau, the community known as Nelson County is home to about 15,000 people living in an area of 472 square miles. Among all the other tidbits in the census report is the average oneway commute for members of our community – it takes us an average of 30.7 minutes to commute to work. That indicates that most of us are traveling outside of our community to find a good job. If you’re one of those traveling the 30.7 or more minutes twice a day, you’ve likely considered starting your own business. And you have probably spent a few sleepless nights weighing the pros and cons. Will it work? The percentage of new small businesses that fail is very high, but yours doesn’t need to be one of them. If you are determined to succeed, then you must also be determined to

follow a few hard core rules. Cash is king – a business that runs out of cash will not succeed. That’s a pretty simple statement that is easily overlooked. You’ll need enough cash in your home accounts to cover up to six months of household expenses – perhaps less if your spouse has a secure source of income. In addition to that, you’ll need enough cash in your business accounts to cover up to six months of operating expenses. If cash is king, planning is the queen – You won’t know how much cash is needed to cover six months of operating expenses without a detailed business plan. Use the contractor’s budgeting rule – consider every possible expense and add 10 percent for Mr. Contingency. Pay every bill on time – especially Uncle Sam. If you have employees or subcontractors, pay them well and on time. Pay yourself last. Love what you do – if you don’t, how can you possibly convince your employees and potential customers that your services are the best in the

area? Learn how to tell your story. Most successful new businesses in the coming years will be those that provide a service – landscaping, contracting, catering, bookkeeping and computer consulting are the current top fields. Service is the key word – lavish your customers with the best to gain repeat business and new referrals. Use the community – in our own backyard, there is a wealth of experienced small business owners who are generous with their knowledge and a bit of necessary advice. Build up a group of mentors that you feel comfortable consulting for advice. Our community is one that supports and encourages local business development. The Nelson Community Day is set to be a fun-filled day for families and an opportunity to showcase and celebrate all things uniquely Nelson. A 2011 midyear real estate market summary

With so much to say and so little space, I am going to get right down to business. Here is a quick midyear summary of what “has” and “is” happening in the Nelson County real estate market. Land Countywide Summary: 23 parcels of land sold countywide. That is down from 27 parcels sold by midyear 2010. Countywide inventory is basically the same; there are currently 287 active land listings as compared to 289 this time last year. Wintergreen (Mountain): 4 lots sold at a median of $40,250. The value priced parcels have been most attractive to 2011 buyers because the median of the 4 lots that sold in midyear 2010 was $122,500. There are currently 48 lots for sale at a median asking price of $99,000. Stoney Creek: 3 lots have sold compared to 6 in midyear 2010. Fewer lots have sold, but at a higher price. The midyear 2010 median

was $88,000 and the midyear 2011 median is $95,000. While active inventory remains unchanged with 73 lots for sale, the median asking price has dropped from $112,900 to $105,000. County Properties (Excluding Wintergreen & Stoney Creek): 16 parcels of land sold; the number of sales and price per acre remain relatively unchanged from midyear 2010. Residential Countywide Summary: 92 homes have sold with an average price of $307,120 ($155 sq ft), median of $256,000, and average days on market (DOM) of 168; 13 of these properties sold for more than $500,000 while 35 sold for under $200,000. Midyear 2010, 87 homes had sold at an average price of $314,017 ($163 sq ft), median of $267,000 and DOM of 161. There is less inventory with 365 homes for sale at an average asking price of $387,631 ($188 sq ft) compared to this time last year in which 425

homes were for sale with an average asking price of $417,377 ($206 sq ft). Attached Homes (Condos/Townhouses): 18 (compared to 21 midyear of 2010) sold at an average price of $148,989 ($143 sq ft), median of $155,000, and DOM of 129. There are 116 condos available at an average asking price of $232,399 ($194 sq ft) and a median of $207,000. Wintergreen Detached Homes: 26 homes have sold at an average price of $427,391 ($187 sq ft), median of $383,750 and DOM of 248. Midyear 2010, 28 homes sold at a median of $422,000. There are 80 active homes with an average asking price of $477,211 ($191 sq ft), and a median of $449,500. Stoney Creek Detached Homes: 6 homes sold in midyear 2010 and again in 2011; the median remains similar as well at $395,950 in 2010 and $397,250 in 2011. There are 47 active homes with an average asking price of $576,039 ($184 sq ft) and a

median of $489,000. County Detached Homes (excluding Wintergreen & Stoney Creek): 42 homes have sold compared to 32 in midyear 2010. Sold non-resort properties indicate an increase in the number of transactions, as well as in the median sold price of $216,000 compared to $211,500 in midyear 2010. There are 122 homes listed at a median price of $264,746. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. Imagine your own version of the now-historic WWII Uncle Sam poster, but whatever it looks like, the slogan has the same message: The Wintergreen Ski Patrol is looking for new volunteers and anyone with a love of snow sports is welcome. Volunteering as a ski patroller requires a big time commitment and sometimes the training requires and even bigger one, but David Kilmer, a Roanoke resident and fairly new National Ski Patrol Organization (NSP) member says it’s definitely worth it.

“It’s absolutely one of the coolest things I’ve ever done in my life,” said David, a chiropractor who now acts as the instructor of record for the outdoor emergency care course which starts this year just after Labor Day. David, a chiropractor by day whose wife and daughter are taking the course this year to patrol with him, says he’s “eaten up” with patrolling. “I would encourage people that if they have a passion for the snow sports industry that we would welcome them,” he said. “It really is one of the

greatest things you could ever do.” While is somewhat of a novice, many people have been patrolling for decades. Judi Kaye, a Wintergreen resident who has been volunteering for almost 25 years, said that volunteer patrollers come from all over – as far as Virginia Beach and Washington, D.C., where she lived until 3 years ago. But now, with recent gas price increases, she thinks it’s a perfect time for more locals to get involved. Interested skiers should contact Debbie Gagen by September 1. NCL

Shortly after our family moved to Love we noticed a peculiar phenomenon taking place whenever we’d get in the truck and drive somewhere. Everyone we passed seemed to be waving at us. Since we were acquainted with only a handful of folks, after the first couple of waves we actually stopped to make sure the truck wasn’t on fire or the front wheel about to fall off. With everything mechanically intact, we ventured on wondering to ourselves, “Who ARE these people?” A neighbor cleared up the phenomenon by explaining that knowing someone was not a prerequisite for waving; it was a local custom used primarily in rural areas as a neighborly gesture when passing another on the open road. My curiosity peaked and I began to notice subtle differences in the waving game. People in cars, unless encrusted over with dirt which denotes living off a paved road, didn’t participate as much. Most wavers were in pick-up trucks, jeeps and other types of 4-wheel drive vehicles. Rules of the game are simple; even if you don’t recognize the “waver”, as the “wavee” you are expected to acknowledge and reciprocate when passing. A smile may be thrown in for good measure. Waving methods were as varied at the people using them and I marveled at the originality of those passing. Certain folks have what you’d call a “signature wave” that differentiates them from everyone else’s. Others throw up their hand willy-nilly or to fit a situation. For instance; if you suddenly round a bend and see one of your neighbors approaching in the opposite lane, you’ll always get a more enthusiastic wave out of that person who may have given only a nod of acknowledgement to the truck they

passed a half-mile back. Personally, I have no direct loyalty to any particular wave. At times I give a one-fingered salute, barely lifting my index finger off the steering wheel. This is a non-flirty, benign statement of friendliness that conveys, “Hello, I acknowledge your presence out here in the country where everyone is friendly.” Other times I put my entire hand up in the left side of the windshield, fingers extended, with no movement. I’ve also been known to give approaching vehicles one or two pulls of the light switch. This can be conveyed as a hello, slow down because Jesse Bridge’s cows are out or watch out for that patch of black ice on the road ahead. Some wiggle all fingers together while gripping the wheel with their thumbs. Others use the standard two-fingered V “peace” sign as their silent greeting. My husband Billy always uses the same salutation; a slight downward twist of all his fingers and thumb, rising a little above the steering wheel. But I’ve witnessed full-handed waves with generous wrist movement, or a slight tip of the fingers stationed on a west coast mirror. One of the most characteristic waves in our area belongs to Donnie Coffey who lives on Campbell’s Mountain Road. He employs a right handed circular motion, with a basic lift of his index finger. This particular wave is what they call a trucker’s wave, which I am told means, “wind ‘er up, there’s no radar in the vicinity.” However you decide to do it, the fine art of rural waving is alive and well and living in the hearts of those passing you on the back roads of Nelson. If you’re new to the area, get in on the tradition by remembering to wave back! NCL

Nelson County Community Day STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS When Robin Tackard was in grade school at Schuyler Elementary School in the mid-1970s, one of the greatest honors a girl could get was to be voted School Queen and have the honor of marching – along with the King and the rest of the court – in the Nelson County Day Parade. And as a past Miss Nelson County, Michelle Ashwell is glad that Nelson County Day – in a reincarnation of sorts – is coming back. The idea behind Nelson Community Day started three years ago, according to Kate Rutherford, the new events planner. “Since then, I have gathered an amazing group of people and we procured the venue [the high school] and invited every business, organization, and church that we know about,” she said. “When I started

planning Nelson Community Day, all these memories started flooding back to Nelson County residents [about Nelson Community Day] and it inspired people to help because they wanted to give their children those same memories.” Kate said her vision for the Aug. 20 event is somewhat of a glorified information fair. “We want to have something that provides people with resources about the businesses and organizations in the county but presents it in a fun way; make it feel kind of like a county fair,” said Kate, who lives in Faber with her husband and two young boys. “I wanted to offer something to the community that was free and fun in the summertime.” Unlike the Nelson County Day of old that Robin remembers, there

won’t be rides (like the Ferris Wheel Robin remembers), but there will be games, food, entertainment and lots of family fun. There will also be a blood drive and a family 5K with profits benefiting the SPCA. And like Nelson County Day, Kate hopes that Nelson Community Day will provide memories for years to come. Dealing with Hydrophobic Soils ‘The most important person in the nursery is the one holding the watering wand’. Old Nursery Saying While working at a large wholesale operation in Virginia Beach during the summer of 1993, I was exposed to a phenomenon that, to this day, baffles me a bit when I encounter it on jobs or in my nursery. The phenomenon is called ‘hydrophobic soil’ or, as you could guess from the Latin derivative, soil that will not get wet (even when watered). If you are a container gardener, undoubtedly you have encountered this and may, to this day, be wondering why your plant died. Recently on a job site, I encountered it in amended soil where annuals had been rotated in and out for years. From the surface, you will water your container or garden and believe that all is well as the water seems to move into the soil as normal. Beneath the surface however, a network of anaerobic activity looms and directs the water into a single channel, effectively keeping the soil completely dry. Only when the soil is disturbed with your finger or hand after watering and the anaerobic area seen, can this phenomenon be adequately diagnosed and ultimately treated. Hydrophobic soils are primarily found in the top 12-inches of highly ‘organic rich’ areas, a pile of leaves, grass clippings, pine bark, etc., or a container garden that has not been disturbed or watered for a bit. As the mix sits undisturbed and un-watered, temperatures escalate, oxygen is depleted and the same microorganisms that plants depend on for the process of turning organic matter to compost are unable to penetrate this dead zone leaving the mix in a suspended state of decomposition. Once this anaerobic network is stabilized, the soil that they occupy will be impervious to water and therefore will never produce fauna again if left undisturbed. Businesses that produce compost deal with this phenomenon on a

weekly basis. The key ingredient that they use to defeat it is oxygen, delivered by turning the mix with a large front-end loader, and water, delivered by continually wetting the mix during the decomposition process. Defeating hydrophobic soils in containers and home gardens are accomplished by similar methods involving disturbing the mix and injecting water into the soil or media with a watering wand (with the diffuser removed). By disturbing the mix and/or adding a burst of water from a wand inserted 4-8 inches into the soil surface, the microorganism’s selfmade anaerobic environment is broken up, often resulting in tan-like bubbles exuding from the infected soil as the water moves in. Due to the oxygen depleted environment that it forms, the wand must be inserted many times into a container or garden area in a 3-5 inch pattern and saturating the container with water in order to break up the microorganism and return the soil to its natural growing state. When you finish with this process, you should be left with soil that more closely resembles muck than a well amended soil. Close monitoring will be necessary for the next number of months in order to prevent another flare up. Some newer soil amendments aid in the absorption of water can be useful in deterring this from happening. However, if the soil is left un-watered for an extended period of time, the end result, no matter how many amendments, soil conditioners or water gels were added will be hydrophobic soils and ultimately plant death. For containers that are to remain ‘dormant’ for the winter months, the best way to prevent this phenomenon is to remove all of the soil from the container and either use it as a top dress for your garden (vegetable or landscape) or place it in your compost area where it is exposed to the winter’s elements for reuse the following season. Remember, the most important person in the garden holds the wand and regular watering will prevent hydrophobic soil.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Diabetes, Part 3 In my last two columns I have discussed Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is the disease where the body does not handle sugar well. As a result, elevated sugars in the blood damage the blood vessels and therefore hurt the eyes, kidneys, nerves, stomach, and most importantly the heart and brain. The biggest risk factors for getting “the sugar” are having a family history and being overweight. Since losing 5-10% of your body weight and exercising daily can help to control, stave off, and even cure the disease, I’d like to focus on that now. Excess fat in our bodies causes the muscles and other organs to not use sugar like they are supposed to. That leads to a buildup of extra sugar in the blood which is what is so damaging. I often have patients ask for a “diabetic diet.” I try to get them to understand that a diabetic diet is really just a well balanced diet with a focus on weight loss if the patient is overweight. We have found that more important than how much sugar you eat is how much you weigh. Of course, one of the quickest ways to cut out the weight

is by cutting out excess sugars. My general counsel about “anti-diabetic eating” is to avoid all the white starchy stuff (white bread, white pasta, white rice, and potatoes), and avoid the candy, soda, sweets and desserts. But most importantly, cut the calories to cut the weight! Exercise is the other major factor in bettering sugar control and staving off the complications of diabetes. 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise (brisk walking will due) 5 days a week is the minimum that is recommended. Of course this helps with weight loss, but the benefits for the diabetic patient go well beyond that. Studies have shown that exercise improves the body’s ability to regulate sugar in the blood stream independent of a person’s weight. Breathe It seems such like such a simple thing. And it is an automatic activity for our bodies. So, why is it when we are stressed or doing strenuous activities that we hold our breath? Perhaps, we think it will help the situation. I receive questions about breathing and lifting weights frequently. “Should I breathe in when I lift the weights?” “Or should I exhale when I lower the weights?” “How do I coordinate my breath with exercise?” Many folks seem to hold their breath when lifting a weight without being aware of it. Whether it is doing abdominal work, pushups, stacked weights or stretching, the breathing stops. It also occurs when people are lifting heavy objects such as furniture. What is the best technique? There are many depending on your purpose. I usually teach the easiest method that folks will remember; the less complicated the better. For myself, I use the K.I.S.S. principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Here it is: an easy breathing rule to use as you lift weights is to keep talking as you lift and lower the weight. As long as

you keep talking, you can’t hold your breath. So, as you lift weights, count your repetitions out loud as you lift. Even if you are whispering as you count, you won’t be holding your breath. The same principle holds true when doing cardiovascular work; talk with your exercise buddy as you are walking, running or cycling. It also makes the time go faster. Practicing breath work can take many forms as seen in meditation, yoga or mindfulness techniques. Research has demonstrated that breathing techniques lower your blood pressure and heart rate and reduce stress. It is a powerful yet simple tool to use. Many of my clients report that they “can’t relax.” So we start with breath techniques. There are many ways and also a variety of breathing techniques. This is just one of them. Lie or sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Allow your shoulders muscles to soften and your jaw and facial muscles to soften. Gently fill your belly with air as you breathe in and then empty the abdominal area as you exhale. Sometimes, placing your hands gently on your belly as you

“Rainbow Mountain is always open to anybody,” said current Rainbow Mountain owner and operator Jeff Begeman. “It’s not just for friends and neighbors. It’s for their friend and their friends. Eventually, we meet and we end up friends in the long run.” As long as the Rainbow Rules (sign in and clean up after yourself) are followed, everyone is welcome – free of charge – to visit the Rainbow Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. Located near the north fork of the Tye River in Montebello, Rainbow Mountain was purchased by Jeff’s family in 1981. “But it was too good to keep for ourselves so we decided to incorporate as a nonprofit and offer it to friends and the public,” Jeff explained. “Not everyone can afford a piece of property like this in a location like this and we find that people like to come out here and relax away from the city life. That’s basically what we’re into here.” Rainbow Mountain features about 8 campsites located throughout the grounds, plus lots of hiking, a swimming hole, and just some good, old-fashioned down-to-nature-type activities. No to mention the wolves. “I do have some wolves up here. Hybrids,” explained Jeff. So while they are his pets, they are highpercentage wolves and certainly look like they could be wild animals. People from far and wide come to enjoy the wilder-

For the most part, campers and explorers have been friends and friends of friends and even friends of friends of friends, but local Nelson families are always welcome – as long as they sign in! Karen Cash just started visiting Rainbow Mountain about a decade ago, but her husband’s been coming for more than 30 years. “It’s just a beautiful place,” said Karen. “We sit back and relax near the water. My husband and I, we walk a lot to see the scenery. It’s just such a lovely, wonderful place. Words can’t describe how it makes you feel when you’re up there. It’s a great, great family-oriented place.” In fact, Jeff said it was always a family dream to have a place like Rainbow Mountain. When they came to Nelson from Michigan in the early 1980s, it was like a dream come true. The nonprofit is currently going through a difficult time, financially, but Jeff is hoping they’ll pull through and be even stronger for it. Families love to come enjoy the natural mountain scenery. Plus, the wildlife is protected so going to Rainbow Mountain is like taking a step back in time. “I like the mountains,” said David Turner, a Virginia Beach, Va. native currently living in Kill Devil Hills, NC. who has been visiting Rainbow Mountain since 2008. “I like the wolves, the scenery, the laid-back, peaceful attitude. It’s a lovely place and I enjoy going to it.” NCL
