from thepublishers As I write this, I’m finalizing plans for the kids’ combined birthday party. Poor Adam didn’t get one last year because mommy was too busy having his sister. Surprise! Bam Bam is turning 3 and Pebbles is turning 1. We couldn’t swing a gravel pit for Bam Bam this year but he is getting his first bike. And as soon as he no longer needs training wheels, mommy can’t wait to get him stunt pegs. We’re hoping Pebbles gets a few more teeth for her birthday. She grabbed one of her brother’s apples the other day and tried to eat it, not easy when two teeth are all you’ve got. She enjoyed the white bean chicken chili we made the other night and even got to crawl around and chew on a leg bone. What kind of parents let their daughter chew on a hair barrette?! The things we find sweet – such as Peyton wanting to do everything her big brother does – is exactly what Adam finds annoying these days. Adam was lining up Lincoln Log stumps the other day (One, two, three, four ... eighteen, nineteen.) and Peyton came over and put one in her mouth (nineteen minus one). Adam loves playing with flash cards but don’t tell him his sister decapitated
Adam invited us into his boxwood fort.
President William McKinley, Jr., the “Idol of Ohio.” Assassinated six months into his second term, McKinley can’t seem to get a break. Sunday, October 23 is when mommy gets a break as she’ll be recovering from the previous day’s Tough Mudder. Monkey bars, wall climbs, fire, icy water. Piece of cake. Birthday cake. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com
Breathing, Part I If the breath in a human signifies life, so too is ‘breath’ important to the life of a wine, which can be considered from the time the wine is bottled to the time it is drunk or becomes oxidized. Yet if some air is beneficial, too much is not. Oxidation (too much air) in both humans and wine equals death, hence our hype over antioxidants. One doesn’t devote thirty years of life to wine tasting without developing a few bees in the bonnet and one of my most cherished bees about wine concerns the notion of tradition versus manipulation. Much is made today about devices that aerate wine to make it softer and smoother. In many households a Vinturi has replaced the old-fashioned crystal decanter. There are magnetic clips that sit on a bottle changing the wine’s molecular structure to something more palatable; there are breathable glasses that aerate in four minutes the equivalent of one hour. In wine tasting parlance, manipulation of the wine by the winemaker, often to promote the big, fruity, Parkeresque wines, is called
spoofilation. Cute, huh? Try throwing that out at your next wine tasting: “I like (or don’t like) this wine—it’s not overly spoofilated.” Or, “It’s a touch spoofy.” Extending this, I think we can continue spoofilating a wine by manipulating it to taste good, better and best with the use of technology. So one could ask, what’s wrong with this? That’s not for me to say. Wine tasting, like life, allows for multiple gray areas and is more a question of taste, style and to some extent tradition. I was recently with friends and we tasted through numerous Pinots, beginning with a ’78 Pommard, each time tasting first in a non-breathable glass, next in the breathable glass, and finally in the breathable glass with magnetic clip. I’ll admit that often the third option tasted best. Although then again I’m wondering, could we really tell after the sixth or seventh wine? But consider this: wine is a beverage whose history dates back some six to ten thousand years. Therefore, while the devices used to aerate are only trying to improve wine—and one surely cannot halt progress— maybe the real experiment is not
with the latest high-tech gadget but with the natural surroundings. I like to gather with friends, uncork wine, pour into glasses, sip, eat, talk, laugh and cry, allowing the wine to aerate naturally in the glass and the entire experience, through time, do the trick of not only opening up the wine… but also my heart and mind. Now that to me seems more romantic than a magnetic clip-wearing bottle. It seems I’ve let loose my bees from the bonnet and they’re buzzing. Next month I’ll share more practical tips on how long to breathe a bottle and which wines benefit most from decanting. For now, try serving the following by opening and decanting two hours before your meal. Tres Picos – This beautiful Garnacha from Spain is powerful and therefore warrants decanting and breathing. When decanted the wine opens showing complex aromas of tobacco, leather, blackberries and plums. Pair with roasted red peppers and grilled pork. $16

Fall breezes and cool views are here! It’s such a blessing to look out my windows and see the turning leaves. But can I keep the harsh sunlight out? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful autumn views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your breathtaking fall views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. I can make the color of the turning leaves more vivid and drastically reduce the heat from the sun. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.
Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

“Here on my farm, we call this organic training,” said Karen Walker-Cooke. “What I’ve done is used what we have on the farm to do training.” Throughout the course of her life, Karen’s coached gymnastics, managed and owned fitness clubs, and has been a trainer for more than 30 years. This time, the training is not for her. Karen, and her farm, is helping Team Nelson get ready for the Tough Mudder at Wintergreen Resort. At Karen’s farm, the Mudders hurdled barrels, crawled under fences, and ran with wheelbarrows full of rocks. And if that wasn’t dirty enough, Karen had the team run through a pond. One of the Team Nelson Mudders who visited Karen’s farm last month is Kerrie Faust, who recently ran the Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run in Richmond to prep for the Mudder. “Having a goal, such as a race, helps keep me motivated to exercise and make it a priority. This kind of event forces me to focus on my entire body,” she explained. “Being able to do that while contributing to a good cause and supporting Nelson County at the same time completes the picture.” Jack Muhler, a semi-retired engineering consultant as well as a Marine veteran, thinks the Mudder’s official charity – the Wounded Warrior Project – is a great one, too.

Lately, he says he’s been doing primarily 25Ks, but he’s done the Mud Run at the Amphibious Warfare center in Norfolk and run races up to 50K, and he’s even been training a bit more for the Mudder. Anthony Martin, on the other hand, has never run a competitive, public race. No marathons, no 10Ks for fundraising, no 5K fun runs, not even a 1 mile run/walk. Until now. And now, he’s jumping in head first. “My wife thinks I’m slightly crazy,” said Anthony, who you may know as the Amherst Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney running for Nelson County Attorney General. “You know, she supports me, but she kind of thinks I’m crazy at the same time.” If that’s the case, Anthony is in the company of 21 other like-minded Nelson County Life readers who have signed up for the mammoth event spanning the October 22-23 weekend. Team Nelson participates Saturday.

And that’s exactly what Vanessa gives the people in her fitness classes. “I always change it up,” she said.
“In life, you never know what’s going to come next and if you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you’re never going to progress.” And Team Nelson definitely doesn’t know what to expect. Although one team member – Terrence O’Neil, former Devil’s Knob Golf Course Superintendent at Wintergreen Resort – has a bit more of an advantage. “They hadn’t built any obstacles before I left, but I actually did run pretty much the entire course,” said Terrence, who recently moved back home to Long Island to take over the family golf business. “I went out there one afternoon with a GPS – they were kind of using me as a guinea pig. It was definitely, definitely difficult.”
PHOTOGRAPHY: NORM SHAFER
According to its website (www.toughmudder. com), the Tough Mudder is “not your average lame-ass mud run or spirit-crushing ‘endurance’ road race.” This race is much more: a 10-mile obstacle course designed by the British Special Forces and benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project, the Tough Mudder is designed to test “strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.” It’s not about finishing first – it’s just about finishing. And Team Nelson fully plans to finish. “The Tough Mudder, it just looks like a grown up playground with wall climbs, log jumps, getting muddy, electrical shocks,” said Yvette Stafford, publisher of the magazine you’re reading right now. “And I might just be suffering from delusions of grandeur or going through a pre-mature mid-life crisis, but it’s right in my backyard, so I can’t pass it up.” The 22 Team Nelson team members – who range from lawyers to teachers to writers to stay-at-home moms to the semi-retired and even include a fatherdaughter team – may not finish at the same pace. “But I think smaller groups of similar abilities will probably cluster together and help each other,” said Yvette. “Even if that means us hanging at the last obstacles for all of our group members to finish together.” Salena Hitzeman, an Arrington gardener, farmer, and artist, has raced before – she’s done a triathlon and a 5K – but never anything like this. She’s had to add a lot of strength training which hasn’t been too hard to fit into her schedule. “Farming does a lot!” said Salena, who was at first apprehensive to sign up for the Tough Mudder, but once she realized Nelson had a team, she was all for it. Training has been pretty intense for everyone. Yvette, for example, trains five days a week at the ACAC in Crozet and goes a few times a month to Karen Walker-Cooke’s farm to train, where the entire team held a training session in late September. Over at the ACAC, she takes classes three days a week with Vanessa Crawford who said that the Tough Mudder is way more than just a run. “I think you definitely need to have the cardio and the endurance, but I don’t think there is any one thing that will get you ready for something like this; it’s so out in left field,” she said. “It’s a matter of training in so many different things; it’s going to take so many different skills to get through something like the Tough Mudder.”
Earlier this year, Terrence did two of the Devil’s Playground 10Ks, but before that (and a preparatory 5K in Richmond) he had never done any competitive running. continued on page 36

One upon a time, more than 50 years ago, Afton Family Medicine opened its doors for the first time. Now, half a century later it’s getting ready to open its doors again – in a brand new, beautiful building. “We’re just very excited,” said Dr. Steve Schmitz. “We’re just thrilled to be close to opening and hope it all goes smoothly. We’re excited to be able to continue good care here.” Steve says the new facility will allow him and the rest of the staff to work better and more efficiently – plus there is space for more staff and even another doctor of demand calls for it.

New medical office nears completion STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS
“This is certainly a nicer facility,” said Steve, who started working with Afton Family Medicine (a division of Martha Jefferson Hospital) in 2004. “The old one served a great purpose for a long time and we all have a little nostalgia about that, but this [new one] is a state of the art facility and it’s going to be good for the next 50 years – really.” The old building was built under the supervision of Dr. Bob Raynor, who ran Afton Family Medicine for its first 50 years. The building was built by the people of the county for the people of the county. “It was important and remained important for a long time,” said Steve. “But we’re glad to have moved one and turn into something that works more with these times.” The new brick building, across the road from Afton Service Center on Route 151, is slated to open in early October and is located across the street and just a little ways down route 151 from the old location. Did you get a letter from the IRS?
By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Letters from the IRS Opening the mailbox to an IRS letter is rarely a happy event. In spite of efforts to make their letters easier to read, they are confusing and a bit scary. First of all…when you receive one of these…don’t panic! In my many years of tax practice, I would estimate that at least two-thirds of these letters are at least partially incorrect. The most important thing to do when you receive a letter from the IRS is to deal with it. Like a toothache, it’s not going to go away. Don’t hide it on the bottom of your bill stack. That will only make matters worse. There are generally three types of IRS notices. First, there are balance due notices – what you declared as estimates or withholding doesn’t match the IRS computer. These are relatively simple to diagnose by verifying what you put on the return. If they are right, you’ll need to pay it within the time frame noted. If they are wrong, you
will need to send them proof – copy of the withholding statement or the front and back of the canceled check used for the estimate payment. The second type of notice is referred to as a CP2000 letter. These have become much more common as the IRS has improved the capabilities of their computers. The IRS computer attempts to “match” the items reported on your tax return with the items reported to them on various Forms W-2 and 1099. If there is a difference, the CP2000 letter is produced by the computer. This notice requires a clear and concise response, with attachments documenting the response. The third type of IRS notice is notification of an office audit. As the CP2000 program has become widespread, office audits have become a rarity – generally limited to self-employed individuals. The notice will identify the items that the agent will want to review. You will need to provide this within the time
frame allotted in a well-organized fashion. Although the audit usually requests delivery in person, you can often arrange for mail delivery if you call the agent. It is critical to respond to any notice in a timely and efficient fashion. Once the time period for response has ended, any proposed changes to your return will be made and you may have lost the opportunity to challenge the proposals. If the IRS communication results in a change to your tax returns, you may need to amend your state returns. In addition, you should review your returns for later tax years for any potential adjustments. Seeking the assistance of a professional Tax Preparer may be well worth while when dealing with these matters, particularly in the case of a CP 2000 notices or an office audit. These professionals have experience with these matters and can assist in responding in the most efficient manner.
We can HELP! At least two thirds of these letters are partially incorrect ... Call us today!

What to expect when you haven’t “been there and done that” Tips for the first time home buyer
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Proper purchaser preparation proves paramount…makes me recall the tongue twister Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers. Perhaps such a twister exemplifies what lies ahead, especially through the eyes of a first time home buyer. While there may be twists, turns, and potential road blocks, this market, with more affordable home prices and 100% financing available, poses incredible buying opportunities. Now is the time to get your foot in the door! If you have never bought a home, here is a quick summary of what to expect, so that you can be better prepared. Hire an agent; Maybe hire isn’t the appropriate term because securing the professional help of a Realtor won’t cost you as the purchaser; typically, the seller pays the realtor fees. Enlisting the help of a dedicated buyer’s agent can make the home buying process more rewarding, and
a lot less intimidating. Set a price and get pre-approved; It’s not just the buyer that sets a price. Know your budget capabilities and limitations. Have a lender review and verify your finances including credit rating, debt, assets, and income. Being pre-approved ensures that you are only looking for homes that you can afford. It also strengthens your position with a seller when an offer is made. Define your needs & search; Set a timeline, determine needs and wants, establish location targets, communicate parameters, and begin searching. Determine, and convey to your agent the “have to have” verses “like to have” parameters. Be realistic; even though there are a lot of homes on the market, there most likely will not be an exact match. Make an offer; Now that you have found the place you want to call home, go get it! Have your
agent review recent sales activity of similar homes, so that you can draft a written offer that will be reflective of the market. While price is critical, it is not the only deciding factor for a seller. Among other things, the written contract should address conveyance of personal property, financing, deposit, settlement date, inspection rights, and/or other requests or contingencies. Negotiate; Accept it, your offer may not get accepted as delivered. In many instances there will be a counter offer. Be certain that you are adamant about the things that really matter. If you are a buyer strapped for cash and need to have seller paid closing costs, then make sure that is your primary point of negotiation. Keep in mind that negotiating is not a winner take all deal. Stay on track; Start checking off items on the post contract to-do list. With the guidance of your agent, ensure that you meet your deadlines
for tasks such as performing inspections and securing financing. Secure an attorney or closing company to perform a title search and prepare the closing documents. Stay on schedule; missing a critical component could cost you more than just the deposit. Pull out a chair; You have closed and the house is yours… and probably the banks. Don’t just unpack the table and chairs; sit, relax, and stay a spell. Owning a home can certainly be a good investment, but plan on staying for at least 5-7 years. Congratulations! Even though home buying may pose a few bumps in the road, crossing the finish line makes it all worthwhile. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Nelson County’s FFA Crops team heads to national competition in Indianapolis.
STORY by EMMA SAUUNDERS PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD
28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE SEPTEMBER 2011
This summer, while their classmates were hanging out at the pool or taking summer trips, the Nelson County FFA Crops Team practiced seven hours a day, four days a week. Their goal? To beat the Nelson County record: 6th place at the national competition in October of 2008. And they’re working hard to meet that goal. Ben Fitzgerald, Gavin Fitzgerald, Emma Saunders, and George Sheffield, along with Scott Massie (the Nelson County Middle School FFA advisor) are headed to Indianapolis, Indiana this month after placing first in the senior division of the state competition. But even though they swept the state level (and the individual team members all placed and/or took honors at the junior and senior levels), the national level is not going to be a breeze. Just for starters, they have to be able to identify 152 plants and seeds (as opposed to 100 at the state level), plus 37 insects, including their life cycles and even how the economic impact they have on today’s agricultural enterprises. Once in Indianapolis, the team will be given a hypothetical agronomic situation and have to develop a management plan within 70 minutes. Then, they have to present the plan to a panel of judges. Plus, they’ll have to identify agronomic equipment, determine the price of grain, complete a seed analysis, and more. At the state convention, the team competed, but had to wait two anxiety-filled days before hearing the results. But on June 30, they were named the 2011 Virginia state champions. The team heads to the National FFA Convention Oct. 18, but it’s not going to be a cheap trip. In order to offset the cost of the 545 mile trip, they’ll be hosting the 5th Annual Bluegrass Benefit at the Nelson County Middle School auditorium. The Little Mountain Band, In the Tradition, the James River Cut-Ups, and Long Mountain Grass will be performing from 3 to 10 p.m. Oct. 8. In addition to the bands, the benefit will feature a silent auction, refreshments, and raffles. All proceeds will benefit the state winning crops team as they make their way out west. NCL

October nostalgia
STORY by LYNN COFFEY
I have to admit, October is my favorite month of the year. Not just because it is my birth month but growing up in south Florida, it’s when we’d get a little break in the hot, humid weather. When temps would plummet into the 70s I’d dig out all my winter wear, amounting to a few light sweaters and long sleeve shirts and don them for school. By lunch time, it was back in the high 80s and I’d be perspiring for the rest of the afternoon. Moving to Love, Virginia, where the average temperature is about twelve degrees cooler than the Valley, has been right down my alley. October here in the Blue Ridge is a taste of heaven and always seems to put me in a reflective, nostalgic mood. It’s the time for crisp mountain mornings, pumpkins, cider, hayrides, and a myriad of autumn colors painting the trees. Each year I gather the most colorful leaves on our sugar maple trees and press them in the phone book, forgetting that when they dry, most of the color fades and their beauty is but a memory. It’s when we dig our potatoes and hunt for the last of the onions to braid and hang for the winter. October is the pungent smell of wood smoke spiraling out the chimney as we stoke the stove with a few logs to take off the morning chill. The same goes for the aroma of burning leaves. Our horses have a spring in their step and always buck a few times when we turn them out of their stalls for the day. The chickens run around frantically, trying to

catch as many grasshoppers as time will allow. And our herd of nowtame feral cats have that crazy look in their eyes as they race up and down trees with wild abandon and leave us little mouse presents on the back porch. It’s when the mountain people clean out their large copper kettles, preparing to make a batch of tangy apple butter. If you’ve never been in on this fall ritual, just ask around and someone can direct you to an orchard, church, or individual who will be making some this autumn. We used to drive up from Richmond before moving here to help Sonny and Bunny Stein make apple butter on October weekends and I remember how much fun it was. On Friday night we’d have a good old-fashioned apple “schnitzing”, where a bunch of folks got together to peel, core, and cut up apples to start the process early next morning. The men would build a fire under the kettle which was suspended above it on a metal stand and add cider to the chopped apples poured into the kettle. Then the long process of boiling down the butter begins, with everyone taking turns stirring. Sometimes two pennies are dropped into the kettle to keep the contents from sticking to the bottom. When the apple butter is ready to be canned, those pennies are bright and shiny from the acid in the apples. To keep the rhythm going while stirring, an old rhyme is repeated that goes like this; “once around the side, twice thru the middle, keeps the apple butter, from sticking to the kettle.” If you’ve never had hot apple butter smeared on a slice of homemade bread, why, you haven’t lived. The same with cider. If there’s a good apple harvest in the fall and you are lucky enough to know someone who runs a cider mill or has an old time hand-cranked mill, you are in for a treat that can’t be matched by the pasteurized product you now find in stores. Sweet, tangy and delicious, homemade cider can be drunk fresh or allowed to set until it starts to ferment a bit, which gives it a carbonated effect. Either way tastes great! Whether you’re lucky enough to live here or just passing through, may each of you enjoy the special joys that October brings in the Blue Ridge. NCL

OCTOBER 2011 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 33
John Clarkson, now the rural mail delivery man in Lovingston, was once a brick mason. While working one day, he met an impressive young man from the small village of Paura in El Salvador. “John just was real impressed with his intelligence and quickness and intuitiveness about his work and his work ethic and they got to be good friends on the job,” said John’s wife, Jonna Clarkson. So when Marvin Menavides went back home, John decided to go along for a visit. “Marvin had described this really remote, rural, impoverished community, but John said after his first trip that words could not describe the poverty that they saw.” The next time John went to Paura, Jonna went to. “We were so moved by these beautiful, eager, joyous children that we knew had no opportunities for education,” said Jonna who works here in Nelson as the Tye River Elementary School Guidance Counselor. When she asks her students what people need to live, they almost always list three things: food, water, and shelter. The people of Paura didn’t always have these things, so they started there – with a water filtration system, a church and community center that acts as shelter from natural disasters, and a corn grinder to help the women prepare meals more easily. But then they wanted to do more – and the Nelson community wanted to help. For the last six years, the people of Nelson have helped send about 20 Paura children each year

to school with the help of John and Jonna and their nonprofit the Emanuel Youth Mission. In the future, they hope to build a small medical center – though the water filtration system and water safety education has helped the percentage of people from Paura with gastrointestinal troubles go from 95% to 5%. And word of Nelson County’s kindness to Paura has spread. Last January, an island community down river heard about Paura’s clean water and they asked for a system, too. Not only did they not have clean water – the people of the Island of Monte Cristo didn’t have fresh water. They now have a system that desalinifies and cleans the drinking water and many fewer people there get sick each year. Jonna takes people from Nelson each year and she appreciates all the help she can get in any form. She says the people of Paura truly deserve it and appreciate it. Kelly Warring, who went with John and Jonna to El Salvador this summer, said visiting was a great experience. “To me, it’s just neat to see the two communities connecting in that way because the people [of Paura] know so much about Nelson County,” she said. She hopes an upcoming pancake fundraiser will help the people of Nelson learn more about Paura. “They’re just the most wonderful, spontaneous, genuine, joyous people,” said Jonna. “Despite the fact that they have very little as far as material things.” NCL

a double black diamond slope – from top to bottom. “I was exhausted by the end of it and that was with no obstacles and it was shorter than the course was going to be,” said Terrence. But despite the difficulty, the Tough Mudder has been a great way for the community to surround Team Nelson and prepare for the influx of Tough Mudders on their way. Local businesses have pitched in for team shirts and overall good will. “I think it’s a great reason for people who normally wouldn’t train so hard to really get together and have a dialog about what they’re doing and get out and run together and train together, and support each other,” said Salena. “It’s good to get to know people.” Even if it’s muddy. OCTOBER 2011 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 37
One of this summer’s biggest box office hits was Super 8, an alien flick about a horror-movie loving kid who accidentally films his town’s – and possibly 1979’s – biggest government cover up. Well, set the movie in 2011 and it could have been about Ammon Winder, a Nelson County horror-loving 11-year-old that recently successfully put on the Blue Ridge Bloodfest – a Virginia horror festival. “When I was little, I was scared to go into the video store,” said Ammon. His mom, Rosemarie Harper, said his older siblings used to tease him and he had a big fear of Chucky – even the covers of the videos. “But once I was 7 or 8, I started watching them. And by the time I was 9, I could watch anything with a straight face and not be scared at all,” said Ammon. “And last year I was 10 and I went to a horror convention and I thought it was really cool.” Rosemarie, who’s an actress and found out about the Gettysburg HorrorFind Convention from a colleague, took him there last summer. “It was like taking Ammon to Disney World except it was Jason instead of Mickey Mouse,” she said. Ammon was definitely one of the youngest attendees at HorrorFind, but had a blast and managed to make some connections and stay in touch

through Facebook. “When we came back from that, he started looking for things to do closer to home that weren’t going to be as pricey,” said Rosemarie. Unfortunately, he didn’t have much luck. “Ammon is the kind of kid who always has huge, grandiose ideas all the time,” she said. So when he said he wanted to have his own convention, his parents kind of laughed the idea off. “But I told my dad I wanted to, and we got it going,” said Ammon. “And it turned out a lot bigger than I thought it would.” He got a filmmaker – Kevin Della Cruise – to help him organize and things just took off. Ammon (who wants to be an independent film maker and has already made nearly half a dozen films) said this was definitely the first annual Bloodfest and the Blue Ridge can expect the second annual event next August. He says it’s important for horror lovers to have a place to go. Horror movies, after all, changed his life. “Watching a horror movie, to me, I think it started out as conquering my fears of horror films and it soon turned into less of a fear and more an experience that I like doing,” he explained. “I enjoy being scared and I enjoy the mood of horror.” NCL

40 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2011
A Specimen Worthy of a Spade A specimen is a plant that offers ornamental attributes to the landscape that, when placed in a sea of other plants, stands out from all the rest. Typically it is an ensemble of form, texture and color that captures the eye and demands attention. While some plants may offer ‘chin dropping’ characteristics while in bloom (a forsythia bush for example), rarely do such plants become categorized as ‘specimens’ since the bloom only lasts for a short while and the landscape is then left with the ‘ashes’ of the bloom and the typical drab foliage that ensues. As such, blooming plants rarely make ‘the cut’ and become known and used as specimens. On the contrary, stately evergreens that have unique form, color and texture and unique deciduous plants (plants that lose their foliage in winter) with attractive foliage AND branching habit are most commonly elevated to this status. For the small home garden I have a list of specimens I pull from and for the purpose of this article am going to focus on the Montgomery Spruce. The Montgomery Spruce, Picea pungens ‘Montgomery’ is a sport or mutation from a blue spruce that grows without a central leader and has the form of a pin cushion. The foliage is ‘Carolina blue’ like that of a blue spruce which really sets it off in the landscape. The ultimate size of the plant is rarely over 3-4 feet tall with slightly larger width with a slow growth rate. However, when planning on this specimen, overplant the area close to it with perennials that can be moved as the specimen grows so that the foliage of your Montgomery can be in closer proximity to other blooms for added contrast (I like for the area to almost look crowded). A Montgomery can come a couple of different ways; either on its own roots, like any typi-
cal plant, or grafted on a ‘standard’ or the root stock of its parent plant (Picea pungens) which then ‘lifts’ the ornamental features of the plant up to 18-24 inches creating a ‘lollipop’ look to the plant. I prefer having it on its own roots but have found that it looks awesome either way. It would be really difficult to ‘misuse’ a Montgomery spruce. However, bear in mind that as you deal with a plant this small, placing it beside a walk, against a wall or in an area where one can appreciate the detail is imperative. This specimen is not inexpensive (expect to pay over $100 for this plant), and therefore should be given a ‘front row seat’ in your landscape where ‘its dance’ can be appreciated. As usual, soil conditions are a must - a Montgomery is still a spruce and therefore requires well drained, amended soil that does not stay wet for extended periods. Once established, these plants are remarkably tolerant of dry soils but I do NOT recommend letting it go for extended periods without water - the first sign of water shortage usually spells certain doom for this plant. Once you locate your spruce in your landscape, be creative as to what you place around it. Pinks (Knockout Pink Rose), yellows (Black Eyed Susan) and oranges (Lantana, Butterfly Weed) do well around this plant as well as whites (Phlox) and even blues (I planted Salvia ‘Black & Blue’, amongst other plants, around mine this year and it looked great). Whatever you do, again, overdo it - in particular behind it as it will only add to the drama that will certainly play in your landscape with this new specimen. And above all, enjoy this plant as it is easy to grow, has very few problems and adds interest for the entire season.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, The common cold season is upon us again! What can I do to stay healthy? Runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, body aches, low grade fever—do these symptoms sound familiar? The common cold is just that, common. If you have school aged kids in the home (or if you are a school aged kid) it is even more common. For the very young (newborns and infants) and for seniors that have other health problems the common cold can be a serious illness, but for most people in between, it is just a serious pain in the rear—or should I say pain in the nose and head! The common cold is caused by viruses which are passed from person to person by contact with each other’s secretions. So, the first and most important form of protection is avoidance: hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. A well balanced diet, regular exercise, and plenty of sleep will keep your immune system in good shape, and help you fend off infections as well.
Echinacea is an often discussed herbal supplement when it comes to colds. Studies are conflicting, but it appears that Echinacea may help shorten the duration of a cold if taken at the first sign of symptoms, but it probably does not prevent infections. Vitamin C seems to boost respiratory defense mechanisms, but has not been shown to prevent colds. However, taking high dose Vitamin C might be beneficial after extreme exercise or after being in a very cold environment for a long time. Some studies suggest that zinc lozenges shorten the duration of a cold, but only the sugar free ones. Finally, there is a study showing that Vitamin E may actually worsen colds in the elderly. Bottom line? Eat well, sleep well, exercise, wash your hands and hope you stay healthy! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Have a question for him? theperfectfit By Agnes F. Schrider, PT Nelson Physical Therapy
Managing Stress with Exercise “Would you please go for a run?” This was usually a firm request or command from college roommates if I was cranky. If I missed a few days of exercise, I became very ornery which those close to me learned quickly. Physical activity has always been an outlet for stress for me. There are periods in your life when you will travel through difficult times. Moving to a new home, losing or changing jobs or caring for an ailing family member can bring hardship to us. Often, during this time, the exercise routine goes by the wayside. For some, it may be two to three weeks without exercise but for others it ranges from six months to years. Depending on the burden, there may be less time to exercise or you may be emotionally drained and physically tired. Stress increases your blood pressure, increases your resting heart rate, increases your respiratory rate and enhances your perception of pain and prolongs physical pain. It decreases your ability to think clearly
or make decisions. Even with the fatigue of tension, exercise helps you to cope and focus clearly during stressful times. Regular exercise releases endorphins (sometimes called the “runner’s high”) which can rejuvenate you. The act of taking time for yourself also reduces stress. It allows your mind a chance to gain perspective on the situation. We rarely take time just to be with ourselves and it is very difficult to find time even when we are not in the midst of crisis. Some executives and parents report they get their best ideas and solutions while they are working out. Being in another environment helps immensely. Walking on a regular basis stimulates the body and brain. When going through major changes in your life, it is likely you will have less time to exercise but I encourage you to take thirty minutes three days a week to walk, stretch, do yoga and strength work to relieve your stress. It will allow you to journey through the challenging period with a stronger mental and physical framework.

44 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2011
Jerky was not a turkey. He was a beagle. And quite regal! We’re not sure when we came up with this silly rhyme but it stuck.
Just when the kids were really starting to love and appreciate Jerky, our trusty hound decided to check out. But he went out like a champ. We had just put the kids down for the evening and were enjoying a late summer nightcap on the deck. Jerky had caught the scent of something down in the field and snapped away with the loudest of barks to chase it. Later that night, we noticed he was limping to one side. A muscle pull, we thought. Not too uncommon for an active dog who’s been with us since 2001. The next morning, he was dragging his hind legs and couldn’t feel a thing. We knew this wasn’t good and reacted instinctively by fixing him some pork sausage. You know, just in case this happened to be his last meal. It was. The next moments happened quickly. I let Adam do the unthinkable, which was to let him wander up to our room and jump on our bed which was full of neatly folded laundry. Peyton crawled around in the den and planted her nose and lips against a window as she watched us hover over the dog who had, moments earlier, dragged his body to scarf up a piece of french toast she had dropped. The smile on Peyton’s face as Jerky slung his tongue across her cheeks was sweeter than syrup. Being able to lay beside this dog as he got ready to leave this world, whispering “I love yous” into his floppy ears, was an incredible honor. Jerky had been with us since our days in Tennessee and rode in our Jeeps when we moved here. He knew us before you knew us. The lump in my throat is the size of Humpback Rocks right now, and I am running out of space. Jerky, we love and miss you so much and can only hope Millington and Angelo are showing you around, introducing you to all the fine ladies up there. You watch over these kids, ya hear? NCL
