from thepublishers Nature Boy is loving these Indian Summer days. So much so, he has figured how to take his shirt off in the car seat and throw it out the window. That is a big no-no. As part of birthday week (Adam, Peyton and dad celebrate theirs within days of each other), we went to the bay for a few days. Lacking summer’s searing sunshine and warm waters, we did the next best thing you could possibly do in that area on a rainy fall weekend: visit the birthplace of George Washington. Quickly bypassing the gift shop – which is much too knickknacky for nature boy – we traced the pea gravel walkway to the two-story brick colonial. We marveled at how well the home had stood up over the years, only to later learn it is a 1930’s remake of the original that had burned down in 1779. But never let the facts get in the way of a good story. In our ignorance, Adam delighted in climbing up the creaky, narrow staircase to the second floor where we imagined George Washington slept as a tot. In one room was a large bed. In the other, a smaller bed. “Warshton!” Adam exclaimed. Back down the steps. Now, back up the steps. Back down the steps.
We did this a bazillion times.
There’s another bedroom with a large bed and a child’s crib at the foot of it. Again, in our ignorance, we imagined a very pregnant Mary Ball Washington clutching that four-poster when the time came to birth this country’s first president. After his umpteenth run up and down the stairs, we left Washington’s make-believe boyhood home and took a few pictures, hitting the gift shop for a classy green George Washington key chain in the shape of Virginia. Now you know who it belongs to should Nature Boy throw it out the window. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Italian Idyll Vying with Nelson County for most beautiful place in the universe and long considered the most sensuous country in the world, at least by me, Italy has never lacked in style. Whether Ferragamo or Gucci, Lamborghini or Ferrari, the Italians have it. And then the wine.... I’d traveled the country as a youngster, hopping around the sensual boot with my sister or other students, engaging in such material pursuits as the quest for the perfect pair of leather boots or finding the best nicciola gelato and, once, lying in agony after becoming a tad greedy at a pasta tasting. The universe has its not so subtle ways of giving us our life lessons. Years later, Italy did not disappoint. Still resting on its Old World charm Italy gave us gorgeous weather, people, art, food and wine, wine, wine. The ancient Greeks called Italy “Enotria” land of the wine, and driving from north to south this was exemplified vine after vine. To honour the vine, we began our gluttony at the organic winery, Pratello, with a
wine tasting and nine-course meal on a stone terrace under the night sky. Favourites included the amazingly complex Lieti Conversari made from 100% Manzoni Bianco. This succulent white smelled of jasmine and lavender and tasted of limes, honeysuckle and brioche, $19. Of reds the winner was Rebo, Gran Riserva - a deep, silky, luscious wine made from Rebo and Barbera, $36. While the trip was generally gastronomic, with heavy doses of food and wine, it had not quite the hedonistic quality of my youth, and severely swollen stomachs were swapped for discretion and spiritual contemplation. As we navigated through linguine and leather handbags, our moods shifted subtly, as each found satiation from the instant gratification of shopping and eating and opted instead for acts of inward reflection, or outward generosity. Driving south to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, patron saint of animals and founder of the Franciscan order, we noticed hundreds of people walking with rainbow flags and banners. Neither a gay pride demonstration
nor a religious festival, it was instead a gentle march to inspire peace (pace in Italian) around the world. This peaceful demonstration set the tone for prayers and miracles to transpire in Assisi and beyond. An afternoon spent with the talented and passionate Elena Pantaleoni at La Stoppa was a highlight for many. On an earlier visit to the organic vineyards I told Elena that her wines were like none I’d ever tasted before. This she took fortunately as the compliment it was meant, for her wines are as unique as the La Stoppa terroir. Macchiona, 2005 – our unanimous favourite was earthy, smoky, full-bodied with deep plummy notes, $36. Gutturnio 2009 - also a Barbera/ Bonarda blend had more cherry and berry notes, $18. And the La Stoppa Barbera was so good that Lauren Spahr risked the Swiss police carting bottles back home to Geneva. continued on page 12 Normandy and Brittany, May 2012. 10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 2011
“One year the hatcheries sent out a special and the turkeys were half price,” said Patti Lou. “But it said you had to order them buy noon. So I called [my husband], Billy, and he said, ‘Do what you have to do.’” Those turkeys came a little while later through the mail – shipped as one day old chicks. Patti Lou Riker and her husband Bill Schutte purchased Tall Cotton Farm many years ago from the people who were farming it. Patti Lou kept her day job at the University of Virginia, but Billy wanted to get started with the farming. “I kind of thought he was kidding and so I ignored him,” said Patti Lou. Until one day she came out of a meeting and got a message from her husband. “Someone told me, ‘You’re supposed to meet Billy up on the hill; he has cows. Do you know what that means? And I said, ‘I’m afraid I do.’” Their first cows, Elizabeth and Louise, and their second pair, Grace and Kelly, came into their lives in 1996. And while Patti Lou is still working at UVa, now in laboratory computing, she is also quite the passionate part-time farmer. She now helps her husband keep everything from cows to quail. “What changed, for me, was reading an article about Joel Salatin,” said Patti Lou. “We were already using rotational grazing methods with our cows, but we didn’t have any other animals. We were concerned about keeping our methods as natural as possible, and the article I read mentioned how Joel would use laying hens following behind the cows to eat fly larvae. I was instantly hooked, and began buying his books and trying to figure out how to do things. That led us to beginning our first laying flock of chickens. Then meat birds. Then pigs. And turkeys. And well… Here we are.” Even though fellow farmers had told Patti Lou and Bill that she wouldn’t be able to keep chickens and turkeys at the same farm – the chickens come with a bio-organism that can give the turkeys blackhead disease – they were able to use moving pens and Joel Salatin’s methods to have both birds at Tall Cotton Farm. And even though it was Patti Lou who wanted the turkeys, Bill’s quite taken with the large birds, too. They now have 270 birds of various shapes, sizes, and breeds.
“It’s probably the creature we have that, if we had to settle on one creature, it would be the turkey,” said Bill. “The pigs are cool, but the turkeys…”
A Bourbon Red turkey, at left, sorts out its turf. However, it’s not all fun and games. Every year Bill has to be the one to take the turkeys to be cleaned so they can be packed, frozen, and sold before Thanksgiving – after 22 weeks of caring for the birds, that can be really tough – not to mention the logistics of transporting nearly 300 birds. “It’s very difficult when we take our birds to get ’em cleaned,” said Bill. But he is proud of the quality of the birds he’s selling to friends, family, and neighbors in Nelson. “They’re cleaned just like they are on your farm, only its USDA-approved and vacuum sealed. But it’s a lot of work to get them there.” The first year, Patti Lou and Bill gave away all their turkeys as gifts, but since then, the couple has been pre-selling all of their turkeys using an email list they get at the Nelson Farmers market. This year, the birds are going for $4 a pound and are anywhere between 10 and 30 pounds. And as for that once reluctant farmer? Well, she’s not so reluctant anymore. “Oh, I love my turkeys,” said Patti Lou. “I love raising the turkeys; it’s much better than I anticipated. I didn’t have any concept of what they would be like. But they’re a lot of fun. I wouldn’t trade raising them – I love it.” NCL

Each day brought new experiences from the black truffled Ciriole in Orvieto to a motorboat ride across a sun-sparkled sea around the isle of Capri. But for some, adventure lay still ahead. A daring feat to secure a café table landed Rosie Gantt in the hospital. But a broken wrist was not enough to stop this cheerful, vivacious, light-hearted vacationer and within hours, Rosie was out shopping the streets of Sorrento with her new Italian cast. If you missed the trip, no matter, you can still come celebrate Italy and all its sensual glories at Basic Necessities.

But why the The Blue Toad you ask? Well… when all these years of traveling came to an end and it was time to settle in and find Mr. and Mrs. Toad a place to live and raise their Toadlets, they decided on the Blue Ridge Mountains here in Afton, VA. Hence, the BLUE in The Blue Toad. So instead of fighting the name any longer, Todd decided to embrace the American way and exploit it – have some fun, make a cool logo, incorporate the look and feel of the great area he lives in, and show his customers a great time! And that’s how The Blue Toad was born.

d Building Residential Excellence Since 1983
RiverView Market cashier Bridget Worley checks out a customer. Cathy Larson and her sister-in-law, Julie Larson, want you to stop by some time. Preferably on a Sunday. “Come by and sit with all the church ladies,” said Cathy. “Before you know it, you’ll be talkin’ to everybody.” And that’s just what she imagined when she, her husband, and her husband’s sister (Julie) opened up Mountain View Market in Lowesville about five years ago. “Julie and I have always loved to cook; we’ve always had a lot of family gatherings and we always seemed to be the ones to cook. It was a dream of ours to cook for our friends and our neighbors,” said Cathy. “And we took that love of cooking for family and just expanded it to the community.” For a half a decade now, the Larsons have run Mountain View Market as part grocery store, part convenience store and part restaurant. But after a while, it became apparent that the 16 seats they had available for the restaurant’s customers just wasn’t enough. In fact, Cathy had even heard rumors that some people avoided the Market’s Sunday brunch altogether – knowing they’d have little chance of getting a seat. So when a convenience store less than two miles away from the Market came up for auction, the Larson’s jumped at the chance to expand and earlier this fall, they opened the RiverView General Store in Lowesville right on the county line. After spending nearly an entire year renovated the old convenience store, the Larsons opened the RiverView General Store on Sept. 1. While the outside renovations aren’t quite complete, the insides of the store have been completely redone and the Larsons hope the General Store will be much more to the community than simply a convenience store. “We feel it all comes back to two things,” said Cathy. “Great food, and being in a community atmosphere.” The RiverView General Store will have some convenience items, but it will also have groceries like you might find in a larger store. Sugar, for example, will come in five pound bags – not two pounders. They also offer a good selection of beer, gasoline, and a nice selection of hunting supplies. The store is even a game check location. Cathy said that there are a lot of little convenience stores “out here in the woods,” but that their goal was to really go above and beyond what was expected. They will even have meats and dairy in the shop. And even though they’re off the beaten path – just the way the Larsons like it – it’s where they want to be. Cathy moved to Nelson after retiring from a career in the corporate world up north, but even though she can’t call herself completely retired now, she definitely says she loves what she’s doing. “We’ve invested a lot of money, but we’ve also really invested our whole lives into this,” she said. “Our whole lives now revolve around these two businesses. We’re really focused on creating something that we’re really proud of; something that we love, and that the folks around us really love, too.” NCL
Exceeding your expectations in every detail, Bormann General Contractors has built, renovated and remodeled some of the finest homes in and around Nelson County including Wintergreen and Stoney Creek.

Fall breezes and cool views are here! It’s such a blessing to look out my windows and see the turning leaves. But can I keep the harsh sunlight out? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful autumn views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your breathtaking fall views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. I can make the color of the turning leaves more vivid and drastically reduce the heat from the sun. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.
Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

Autumn calls us home again, to a place we hold in our hearts. There’s no place like home in the Fall of the year, and there’s no place like the mountains to celebrate the beauty of the season. The brisk air and the view of richly colored leaves from a mountain home creates a deep sense of harmony. Creating homes in harmony with nature is a calling for Jeffery W. Caudill, founder of Winterwoods Homes.

These luxury log and timber frame homes are a tribute to the mountains,
trees, and changing seasons. Winterwoods Homes designs have helped define the resort and mountain lifestyle in Vail, Beaver Creek, Lake Tahoe, Telluride, Nantucket, Sonoma Valley, and in their homeland of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains where the dream began. Caudill started with seven original sketches based on what he would have wanted in his dream home throughout the stages of his
own life. Eventually, he created 18 original sketches - all of which were a culmination of Caudill sitting down with a sketchbook and drawing his heart out. Today, there is a far broader array of home concepts available, striving to fulfill that vision of the “dream home” for more customers with varied styles and we budget parameters. The Doby Mountain Lookout, the flagship home of Winterwoods Homes and the Winterwoods Homes Foundation, stands as the ultimate tribute to the vision that defines the entire spectrum of Winterwoods Homes designs. For it is here that the vision comes to life in a beautifully detailed, mountain retreat (pictured in this article).
The home is one with the mountains - constructed with reclaimed, recovered and recycled materials, featuring handscraped teak flooring, a natural stone fireplace, and antique barn boards reclaimed from the 1700s. From
Winterwoods partner and awardwinning interior design team at Slifer Designs, one of the nation’s top residential design firms and the leading authority in elegant resort interiors.

To our friends and
customers:
We know, you are wondering “What is taking so long, why aren’t they open yet???” Well, to make a short story into a novel, we grew. On our way to opening a ‘satellite store’ at the Wild Wolf Brewpub and Shopping Village we came to realize something, we absolutely love Nelson County and more specifically, Nellysford! So we decided to not only to move our entire store from Crozet to Nellysford, we decided to make it bigger and better! So we kept adding space, and the stack of blueprints kept getting bigger as the concept expanded. We took over one building, then another and another and finally a fourth! All are being renovated and expanded, and when we are done, we will have more than DOUBLE the space that we had back in Crozet! It’s a good thing too, because after our recent market trips, we have tons and tons (literally) of new items arriving, and we can’t wait to show them to you! So our ExtraZ!™ store is now going to be the new home of our jewelry and accessories lines (though to get the party started, it will also be housing our holiday items this year), and it will open simultaneously along with the Wild Wolf Brewpub in early November. Zestivities!® will open next door to ExtraZ!™, though we aren’t exactly sure yet what that date will be. If you are a Facebook or Twitter member, please ‘follow’ Zestivities!® there, and read about us right here in NCL, and we’ll keep you in the loop as to that date!
here we are, when we first started. With the center addition, this is what these two buildings will look like after they are connected.
We are building each space just as fast as we can, but we know that you have come to expect a fun atmosphere, a unique setting and a great experience when you come to Zestivities!®, and we are committed to making sure that we EXCEED your expectations with each new store! In the old store we were asked numerous times if we were part of a chain by folks that liked our decor, and that really was flattering, but we think that what we have planned for the Wild Wolf Village totally blows our old store away. But our biggest difference is that we’ll treat you like you’ve never been treated at a chain store, like only an independent store can and does! We’ll work to earn your business every day! Thank you for your patience and support!

Kids GROW UP so fast!
By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Children & Grandchildren As I write this, I am visiting with my newest grandchild. Just a few weeks old, he has no thoughts of anything beyond the next feeding and nap. As we all know, it will seem like no time at all before he is grown. I am often asked about the best way for parents and grandparents to save money for children for education or other long-term plans. The answer is the usual … it depends! The easiest and most common type of savings accounts for children is a custodial account. Since a minor cannot open an account in his own name, these accounts are opened by an adult as custodian for the benefit of the child. With these accounts, the child’s social security number is used for reporting income. Unless the amount of the child’s income exceeds $950 annually, there is no tax on the income. The downside of custodial accounts, is that at age 18 (or 21, depending on how the account is set up), the child has complete discretion over the account. And, a large balance in a custodial account may re-
duce the amount of aid for a child applying for scholarship or loan funds. However, the custodial account is the simplest option for accounts with less than $5,000 in value and is a perfect vehicle for children to become aware of the benefits of saving. Use of an education savings plan, commonly referred to as a Section 529 plan, provides more control by the custodian. In Virginia, there are two types of 529 plans. The VPEP is the Virginia Prepaid Educational Plan. Under this plan, the account holder signs a contract and agrees to fund an amount that is sufficient to fund tuition at a Virginia public school or its equivalent. Payment can be made in one or more lump sums or in monthly payments. The VEST is the Virginia Educational Savings Trust. Under this plan, the account holder contributes in discretionary amounts. There is no guarantee that this will be adequate to fund the required tuition levels. However, there is more discretion in these accounts in how the funds are
invested. Income from both VEST and VPEP accounts grows tax-free. There is also a Virginia tax deduction for contributions to the plan. Unused funds may be transferred to a sibling’s account. There is an excellent website with information at www. virginia529.com. Educational funding for children, however, should take a back seat to financial security for the parents. Security at home, including financial security, will provide a strong family surrounding that is more important for the development of healthy children. Are you funding your own retirement plans? Is your debt within controllable limits? Does your rainy day fund have ample funds to weather potential unemployment or an unforeseen emergency? A CPA or financial planner can often assist couples in focusing their financial plans. Begin these discussions early and have them at least annually. Before you know it, that little one will be off to college!

A real estate market update for Nelson County and the surrounding area
By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County
Are we up, down, or relatively unchanged? YES! The rollercoaster of ups and downs in the Charlottesville area real estate market continues. Here is an overview of what has happened for the first nine months of 2011 in the Charlottesville area real estate market with an emphasis on Nelson County. Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) 2011 Year to Date (YTD) 3rd Qtr Market Synopsis: CAAR just released the third quarter market report for Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Orange, and Nelson. Once again, there is good news and bad. One of the greatest glimmers of hope for market stabilization is that inventory, i.e., homes for sale, continues to drop. Currently there are 3,239 homes on the market, compared to 3,506 a year ago. The 7.6% float down of active inventory, reduces the supply, and hence brings us closer to a balanced market.
Overall Charlottesville area sales are down 2.3% from this same time period in 2010. This could be considered relatively stable with some areas exhibiting an increase (Charlottesville and Greene), and all other areas experiencing a slight downturn in sales. The median sales price fell area wide. The areas with the highest median sales prices are Albemarle ($276,975), Nelson ($235,000), and Charlottesville ($234,000). The days on market remains the same at an area average of 117 in 2010 and again in 2011. Nelson County YTD 3rd Qtr Market Summary: Active inventory is down 12.3% to 351 homes for sale from 400 during this same period in 2010. Unfortunately, sales are also down. Upon first glance it appears that Nelson took a significant hit in sales. In YTD 3rd Qtr, Nelson had a 15.8% (from 138 to 117) reduction in sales. (However, it is important to note that this time last year was a highpoint for
Nelson experiencing a 45.3% increase in sales compared to the area average of 3.6%.) As of mid October 2011 the sales have already jumped to 131 homes sold at an average price of $285,883, median of $225,000, average price per sq ft of $148.97, and average days on market of 190. 70% of these sales sold in less than 190 days on market; the other 30% sold in an average of 447 days after repeated price adjustments. In essence, the homes that sold within a 6 month window were more appropriately priced for market absorption. While home sales are down, I just had a 30 day window with 7 residential closings scheduled, so homes are still selling in Nelson! There are a lot of reasons to call Nelson County home. Pick your reason - the scenic beauty of the mountains, wide array of recreational opportunities, affordability of taxes when compared to many northern areas, proximity to Charlottesville for easy commut-
ing, or central location for vacationers from Washington, Richmond, Tidewater and other areas. Nelson will continue to draw new full time residents and vacation home buyers. However, statistics show that homes are not flying off the market so to speak. Hence, it is more important than ever, for sellers to be mindful of the big three marketing components – price, condition, and marketing. In order to achieve a sale, a home has to be priced within the market parameters, in good condition, and without a doubt it must be well marketed. Contact a local real estate professional to better understand how this data relates to a property that you plan to buy or sell. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Mobile ads come to Nelson Rob Masri grew up in a small town in Southwest Virginia and spent a lot of time at his father’s restaurant: Charlie’s. “And my dad preached the importance of making every single customer feel at home,” said Rob. “He would always tell me that if the same 40 or 50 customers didn’t come in every week after week and month after month, there’s no way our restaurant would survive.” So years later as he was putting together a business plan for Cardagin Networks, Inc., his father was his inspiration. “I saw that there were a lot of great places where a local business could advertise – magazines, newspapers, TV, Groupon, whatever – to get people to set foo into their storefront for the first time,” said Rob. “But once they were there, then what?” So Rob and his company created the software used as an app or mobile website on mobile phones that allows businesses to complete the customer life cycle. Cardagin provides a way for local businesses to stay in touch with customers while giving the customers access to unique coupons and sales available through Cardagin only. Cardagin started 10 months ago in Charlottesville with more than 100 businesses signed up before the Jan. 18 launch. They are now in 39 cities, including Nelson County, where they’ve partnered with Nelson County Life. “We’ve been tossing around the idea of offering some social media advertising options for our advertisers,” said NCL publisher, Tommy Stafford. “By partnering with Cardagin, we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel and become software developers. Plus, we like doing business locally.” “We started out very simple and it’s turned into a very elaborate movement that’s capturing the imagination of small business owners and really people everywhere,” said Rob. “And that’s the most fulfilling part.” NCL

Actor Richard Thomas hands Lifetime Achievement Award to Earl Hamner.
Hamner receives Literary Lifetime Achievement Award STORY & PHOTO by WOODY GREENBERG
The 14th Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards Celebration honored Earl Hamner with its Literary Lifetime Achievement Award Saturday, Oct. 15 held at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. The event was hosted by noted Virginia author Adriana Trigiani, who said she grew up in Big Stone Gap with six brothers and sisters watching “The Waltons”, which was about a similarly sized Virginia family. She said she was inspired by Hamner to become a writer and said other Virginia writers learned a great deal from him. “Earl taught us how to describe something, how to tell a story, how to be truthful and was never ashamed to have a big heart,” Triginiani told the overflow crowd, which included best-selling authors David Baldacci and John Casey as well as former Gov. Linwood Holton. She read passages from “Spencer’s Mountain” which was the basis for “The Homecoming” and “The Waltons” television series. Triginiani introduced a surprise guest, actor Richard Thomas, whose first great success was playing “John-Boy” on “The Waltons.” “Earl is the one person in my life responsible for the success I’ve had,” said Thomas, who has appeared on Broadway numerous times, has directed a number of Shakespearian plays, and has starred in many movies. “With ‘The Waltons’ we got to do not just a TV series but American short stories,” he said, adding that Hamner’s stamp was on every show. Hamner thanked his brothers and sisters, three of whom were in the audience, Jane, his wife of 57 years as of Oct. 16, and his two children, Caroline and Scott, who also attended. He told several jokes about getting old and ended with a passage from “Spencer’s Mountain” as a teenage Clay-Boy leaves his family to go off to college. NCL

A bare spot or numerous bare spots on a lawn is no reason to start over. Part of establishing a lawn is developing a root mass to stabilize the area and having a ‘nurse’ crop to shelter and shade new seedlings. An old lawn that has some areas that need rejuvenating has both of these. If you till and start from scratch, you remove both of these valuable resources making the area vulnerable to wash out and hot summer sun. If you keep in mind that you are only trying to grow seed late August until late October, and not worried about killing crab grass, weeds and such, you will be way ahead of the curve once the cold weather sets in. As I try to get across to all of my clients; create grass in the fall, clean up grass in the spring. Therefore in lieu of a complete makeover, surgically you can treat these bald areas of your lawn and address them without disturbing what is already there. I cannot accentuate timing more than with a seeding operation. Getting the seed down during the time frame discussed above, as well as timing your actual seeding just before a weather front moves through the area is imperative. It is a term called ‘setting the seed’ (providing soil/seed contact) and Mother Nature does it infinitely better than a watering wand or other manmade devices. Once the area is designated for repair, have a soil sample taken in order to make sure that all of your micro- and macro-nutrients are where they should be. Do not worry about the results if you haven’t gotten them back or if you are a bit behind the 8-ball on taking your sample – the seed will still germinate as planned without all of the amendments (unless the pH is just extremely low, <5). The entire area should be mowed as low as you can without damaging
the roots of the existing vegetation. This is partly in order to facilitate the spreading of the topsoil as well as briefly shocking the existing vegetation so that it does not continue to grow unchecked while the seed is germinating. You will NOT be able to cut the grass for at least 2-3 weeks so you don’t want that existing material to be 18 inches tall when you can make your first cut. With the area now mowed really low, aerate or disturb the entire area. This is mostly to breakup hard, baked areas, but also to have nice soil/seed contact with the first seeding. Once the area is disturbed, seed the area at ½ the normal rate. Now begin to spread your topsoil around the entire area at about 1.5 to 2 inches. Rake out any large dirt clods as well as any sticks or rocks – all of which is capable of preventing seed from germinating. Once this is done, seed again, this time at your normal rate. Seed is comparatively cheap in this equation so err to the high side. We often add a nurse crop of rye grass, but in this equation it is unnecessary as the exiting vegetation will nurse the young grass along. Cover the entire area with straw and water just to wet the straw and make it stick to the ground. If your timing is good, Mother Nature will ‘set the seed’ and provide the moisture needed to germinate the area. Within about 7-10 days, not only will you see the seed beginning to germinate, but the existing vegetation will have begun to grow again. Do not mow the area until the seed has gotten to around 2 inches or so – in doing so, do NOT enter the area with a zero pivot mower as all of your hard work will disappear with one turn of the machine. Once your soil report arrives, follow their recommendations.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have heard about recent outbreaks of food poisoning. How can I protect myself from this? Food borne illnesses are caused by eating or drinking foods that are contaminated with bacteria, viruses or parasites. Symptoms can range from a mild stomach upset to a more serious illness. Although many cases go undiagnosed, it is estimated that 76 million Americans get a food borne illness each year and 5000 people die as a result. Young children, elderly people, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems are the most at risk. The most common causes of food borne illness are bacteria, which may be present on foods when they are purchased. of food can occur during growing, harvesting, processing, storing, shipping, or final preparation. Symptoms of a food borne illness often resemble stomach flu but you should seek immediate medical care if you or child has diarrhea plus any of the following: high fever, blood in the stool, vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down, dehydration, confusion or shock. Most cases of food borne
illness are treated with fluids which may be given by mouth or by IV if needed. Other supportive care is given as needed. Although antibiotics are sometimes used in severe infections, they are usually not indicated and may increase the length of time that a person is contagious with the infection. In order to prevent food borne illnesses foods should be refrigerated or frozen promptly before preparation and after the meal is finished. Foods should be cooked properly and at a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria. Cross contamination in your kitchen can occur through cutting boards, knives, etc. Wash your hands, utensils and counter tops with warm soapy water before and after preparing foods. Keep raw meat, poultry and seafood and their juices away from ready to eat foods. Few things can ruin a good meal more than getting food poisoning. Attending to Your Aches We’ve all had them- aches and pains in our back, neck, shouldersall the trouble spots. We think the pain will dissipate after a couple days of rest and some ibuprofen. So we plug away at our daily life and move forward. The pain lessens and we think it’s gone and done. We got through it. Perhaps. Most of our minor aches do lessen in pain after a few days rest but the danger in allowing the pain to go unattended is that the body and mind make compensations in movement and posture. For example, you’ve been doing yard work for several hours. The next day your back aches so you take some ibuprofen. Maybe you rest and move gingerly. During that time, without you perceiving it, you start limping or holding your body differently due to the pain. A week passes and the pain decreases but the brain and body continue to
move as if you are still in pain. The body remembers the pain and the altered movement even though it is now less. These alterations in your body can continue and lead to further chronic pain years later. In fact, it is common to see foot pain eventually lead to hip pain and then low back pain. It is common for folks to have a minor surgery and years later to have pain that resulted from changes in posture, gait or atrophy of muscles that were never fully rehabilitated. Abnormal movement can lead to dysfunction later on. Muscles have a memory and it is important to retrain them and restore normal movement. Once pain becomes chronic (existing longer than three months), it takes longer to normalize motion and posture. Thus the moral of the story is to address your pain sooner rather than later to avoid chronic pain, to restore normal movement and prevent other dysfunction.

30 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2011
Thanksgiving is the day in November our nation collectively sets aside to thank God for the many blessings He gives us throughout the year. 2011 will mark the 31st Thanksgiving I’ve spent here in Love, Virginia. As I’ve gotten older and seen many younger people afflicted with life’s sorrows and diseases, I am realizing more and more that for some folks, just getting through one day is sometimes a major accomplishment. At this point I’ve survived sixty-four Thanksgivings and am looking forward to many more. In my own life I have had a lot to be thankful for. Growing up, my family was far from wealthy but we always had the basics that most
Americans take for granted such as food, shelter and clothing. We didn’t eat steak every night, our house was not in the country club section of town and I never wore designer clothes but I never went to bed hungry, always had a roof over my head and clean clothes hanging in the closet. I am also eternally grateful to parents who not only supplied these material things but gave me moral guidance and discipline as well. And I thank God He sent angels to watch over me as I was growing up. I was never a rebellious child but I had a wide streak of mischievousness and sense of adventure that bordered on the side of dangerous. Looking back at all the crazy things I did, it’s a wonder I’m even still here! Being a teenager in the 1960s with all the drugs and new freedoms taking place, I am thankful I was never part of that scene. So many of my friends were mortally wounded emotionally and physically by all that “freedom” that they never made it to adulthood. I have also been thankful that I was able to stay home with my children as they were growing up. You can say what you want but I am still convinced that a child benefits tremendously by having a stay-at-home mom. And although life has a habit of dealing some pretty bad hands, I have to say it was during the worst of times I drew closer to God and came to depend on His help to make me strong enough to get through the rough patches. The gift of pure, unadulterated laughter is another thing I will always be thankful for. Humor plays such an important part of our lives. It lessens pain and embarrassment as well as giving the body a real health boost. Our family has serious off-the-wall humor that takes the edge off life’s mishaps and pokes fun at our own frailties. Laughter may give us a few laugh lines but in the end it adds years to our longevity. This Thanksgiving I am especially thankful for good health. After spending most of the summer mending from a broken foot, I am now able to walk from here to there without the aid of crutches or a cane which is a blessing straight from heaven. There are so many things to be thankful for. When I’m having a day from “the bad place”, I take a minute to put things into perspective and realize how easy I have it. How easy we all have it. Most of all, I am truly thankful for life itself. How precious it is, even with all its imperfections and hassles. We are only a heartbeat away from losing it, changing our lives forever. LIFE: Love it. Savor it. Revel in it. Take time to enjoy it. But more importantly, be thankful for it. Not just this Thanksgiving but always. NCL

Today the Rockfish Gap Country Store has an extensive selection of antiques, home décor, jewelry and local art. There’s also running water, heat, air conditioning, and internet. New to the list of improvements are the solar panels that are now atop the store’s roof. Thanks to Waynesboro-based Sigora Solar, the RGCS was able to modernize its building by investing in a renewable energy source. Saving money is an easy decision, said owner Jim Gates. “A federal grant was available to us to have the panels installed, so we did it,” explained Gates, who happens to be the author’s father. “Eventually it should take care of about thirty percent of our heating cost.” Built during the 1930s just over the Nelson County line in Albemarle, Rockfish Gap Country Store was first used as a peach packing shed by Chesly A. Hayden. Not only was it the biggest produce warehouse distribution center in the county, but it also ranked among the top three in the state of Virginia for production. Back then the shed had no insulation, no running water, and the only electricity was used for the conveyer belt that ran the length of the shed. The structure’s changes are an example of how agricultural buildings throughout this rural region are adapting to survive in these economic times. When the peach business in Virginia slowed due to

increased sales further south, the shed was converted to a country store. Since its transformation, many alterations have been made; Solar panels being the most modern advancement. Andy Bindea, Chris Sine and Shawn Cooke make up the Sigora Solar crew responsible for installing the panels. This team attended a special training course which taught them the logistics of installing solar energy systems, but one extremely technical trick they didn’t learn in any class was to pour soda on the roof to make their feet sticky. Only five months old, Sigora Solar has already completed several jobs in the local area, including the new Martha Jefferson Medical Center on Route 151 in Afton, a project Gates oversaw in his main line of work as general contractor. Although the building has been undergoing a modern facelift, Jim and Kerry Gates have always been interested in keeping the cultural integrity of the building intact. Immediately upon entering the store, the retro candy selection, the rat cheese, and the vast array of jams and jellies are still in their original location, just as they were fifty years ago. “We wanted the store to keep the same feel and look but we had to modernize it,” Jim said, “We brought it more merchandise and we had to make it workable. Nobody wants to shop when its 120 degrees inside.” Keeping with the rustic appeal and the southern charm, the store has managed to keep the spirit alive with the building, inside and out. NCL

Coffey closes chapter on Backroads trilogy. STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS Her first book, Backroads: Plain and Simple Livin’, was published in November of 2009 by Quartet Books. Backroads 2: The Road to Chicken Holler, came out just one year later. After book number two, Lynn wanted to take a year off before writing another one – and she said she was still getting requests for a third – but her husband talked her out of it; said she’d lose her momentum. “My husband Billy had been such a big supporter,” said Lynn. “When we got married, he knew he was getting a bride and a newspaper, but he never knew about books.” Backroads 3: Faces of Appalachia came out last month and Lynn says it’s definitely the last. “I am just totally blown away that they have been such a hit,” said Lynn. “But I always felt that the mountain people and their culture is something that is worth preserving. It’s history from our area and it’s worthwhile.” NCL
NCL contributor Lynn Coffey chats with a reader at a recent book signing at The Nelson Center in Lovingston. Faces of Appalachia is available for purchase at various Nelson County locations, including the Visitor’s Center, and online at www.backroadsbooks.com.

When Lynn moved here in 1980 from South Florida (via Richmond), she realized that Nelson just wasn’t quite like any place else. “I moved right in where the mountain people lived – people that had been born and raised here – and they were still living the old way,” said Lynn. “I wanted to live a simple life and I wanted to have them teach me.” She asked around and she was not at all surprised to hear all kinds of interesting stories. But a year later, she and a neighbor decided these stories needed to be recorded. “All the mountain people – they were not shy! They wanted to be in that newspaper,” said Lynn. “So I did that for 25 years and I thought I was going to retire. But again, the mountain people asked me not to let their stories die.” So after retiring the Backroads Newspaper (which at one time published about 5,500 copies each month) in 2006, she decided to put some of her stories down in a more permanent format.
