from thepublishers Forgive me, but my mind has been in the gutter. I stumbled across this great idea online to drill a section of metal gutter into one of Adam’s bedroom walls and set books in it, facing outward. The thinking is if kids see bright book covers instead of boring spines, they’ll want to pick up a book and read it. But they must first know how to read. At our house, we are well-versed in the alternative three Rs: reading, reciting, and ripping. I read him the books. He recites the stories. He rips the pages. So, for about a week, those gutter shelves sat empty and the books went back in a safe place. But as you know, my mind stayed in the gutter. So naturally, we hopped in the Jeep and went to Wintergreen Hardware. Adam had his red Ford Explorer car (the right passenger side door won’t stay shut) and as our minds wandered, specifically to the gutter aisle, we found our next project: Downspout Motor Speedway. Downspout Motor Speedway is brilliant. What you do is you prop up one end of the downspout on say, a few sacks of manure, and then you feed the car at the top end and watch it shoot down the tunnel. Boys between

the ages of 3 and 4 will do this over and over again. Really. The only bad thing is Downspout Motor Speedway is an outdoor toy; it’s not the kind of thing we want Adam dragging all over the house with a curious sister tailing him. It stays outside. As for the gutter shelves? They had sat empty, as you know. But now, gutter shelf has become Gutter Parking Lot, an accessory to Downspout Motor Speedway. Available in white and brown for the holidays. There’s a joke there, but I don’t want Santa to skip our house. Merry Christmas! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

Holiday Picks Thibaut-Janisson, Cuvée d’Etat, Blanc de Blancs, Millésime 2008 – I don’t think you can go wrong with champagne, that versatile sparkling nectar that goes with everything from itself to oysters to cheese soufflé to rich game to the outstretched hands of the guests at your party. Champagne grapes are grown under the harshest conditions only to be enchantingly transformed into a foaming golden liquid that is as far removed from the dreary, black grapes as Julia Roberts is from a Hell’s Angel. There’s no magician’s act like it. Okay so, produced in Virginia, T.-J., Cuvée d’Etat is not true champagne, but please, blindfold me and ask me to guess. I’d sure be fooled. It’s a Blanc de Blancs which means all white grapes, and in champagne that means all Chardonnay. This is some of the finest sparkling wine I’ve tasted in a while, all the more so when you consider the price. And ladies take note, Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, declared that it was the only way to get sozzled and still stay sexy. My favourite quotation however is at-

tributed to the late Lily Bollinger who, when asked by a London reporter when she drank champagne, replied: “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it…unless I’m thirsty.” $32 Barthe René, Pinot Gris, 2008 - I cannot get enough of this wine and my passion has evidently spread to staff members as Sarah keeps grabbing bottles off the shelf to take home and serve with her red curry. Opulent, unctuous, round, rich, complex, yeasty with smoky yet slightly floral notes, this is a “food wine.” The Alsatians know how to make Pinot Gris better than anyone else and this organic example is one of the best you’ll find. Pair with chicken livers, kidneys, game and holiday fare such as white meats and roasts. $18 Medici, Pinot Noir, 2004 – Around Basic Necessities this wine needs no introduction as I serve it more than any other. Neither does it need my promotion. I feel, however, I’d be do-

ing a disservice to those who haven’t made its acquaintance if I went without a mention. My love of wine began with Pinot Noir, an aged Burgundy whose bouquet I easily still remember, the mnemonic power of the olfactory system the best of all the senses. The 2004 Medici smells and tastes like that first unforgettable experience…at one third the price. Pair with cheeses, white or dark fowl. $35 La Bastide St. Dominique, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2009 – I love the lush sensuality of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and this full-bodied wine is at its best when the temperatures dip. At home, it’s a fall/winter staple that I love to bring forth with holiday meals. Eric Bonnet of La Bastide St. Dominique is the unassuming wine maker behind the sensuous potion. A blend of mostly Grenache, this wine will cure any notions you might have about Grenache as thin or harsh. Here, it is made and aged to elegance and the price is a CDP bargain. $38 Happy holidays and remember to shop locally and buy humanely raised meats. Normandy and Brittany, May 2012. 10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2011

“I usually will go there and cut a lot of what I need from her holly trees,” Beth said. “And a lot of the spruce, the white pine and things, I just cut from our yard up in. We have five acres so we have lots of white pine and regular pine. But usually I won’t cut down trees, just limbs. Mainly it comes right from between the two of our houses.” Though Beth grew up in Nelson County, she lived in Hatteras, N.C. for about 20 years where she and her husband ran a restaurant together. She also spent three years as a floral designer at a garden center in Chesapeake. But Nelson was pulling her back – and the, perhaps, stronger pull of antiques – brought her to stone building at the corner of Rts. 29 and 6. “I always thought, ‘Maybe one day…’” said Beth, who remembers driving past the empty storefront that was once Walton’s Mountain Country Store every day. “It looked so lonely and sad sitting here.” So this year, Beth has a place to hang her Christmas wreaths and garlands. Her shop, Bittersweet Branch Primitives opened just this past spring. But setting up shop wasn’t easy. After a couple of tries, Beth got in touch with the current owners – the children of the original Walton’s Mountain Country Store owner Joyce Wood, and leased the place right away. Beth knew that the old building would be perfect for her antiques, gifts, and crafts. “A lot of people stop and take pictures of the building,” she said. “They just love the quaintness. It looks like a little chalet sitting in the middle of 29. It just has a feeling; it’s a warm little store. It’s cozy.” Cozy is perfect for Beth’s antiques, which, for her, are just a way of life. Her mother owned and operated the Meadowbrook Wallpaper Shop in Charlottesville for about 25 years, and her grandmother was an antiques dealer before that.

Even her shop, though new to her, has quite the history. Joyce Wood opened the Walton’s Mountain Country Store in 1982, but the building has been around much longer – it even survived Camille. Diane Nordt, one of the current owners and Joyce’s daughter, said she wasn’t sure exactly when the place was built, but knew that in previous lives it was both a gas station and a gun shop. Though Diane isn’t around every day to see what’s become of her mom’s shop, she is quite happy with Beth’s Bittersweet Branch Primitives. “I told Beth it felt like mom would have really liked her store and she would be happy with its use right now,” said Diane. “Beth has really good taste and I just feel like it suits the charm of the building.” The Walton’s Mountain Country Store was originally a place where locals and fans of the hit television series could come together, share a brownie or two and take in the peace of Nelson County. Bittersweet Branch Primitives is actually not quite different – plus an antique here or there. “You can just come in and have a cup of coffee,” invited Beth, adding that the coffee at her shop is not for sale – it’s just there for customers, guests, or anyone who meanders in to take a look at Beth’s fresh homemade wreaths or, on the other end of the spectrum, perhaps a bureau one of those original “Waltons” may have used. “Pretty much, it’s how I grew up; I guess it’s in my blood,” said Beth, who jokes that her friends tease her, saying the more beat up a piece is, the more she’ll like it. She takes it well, though. “I always knew I didn’t want anything new.” NCL

A few months back, we shared with you the story of the Wild Wolf Brewery expansion. Mary Wolf planned the grand opening of the new brew pub for her birthday – 11/11/11 at 11:11 a.m. “It went awesome,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier. It’s one of those things that you schedule and you hope it’s all going to work, but you don’t know for sure… but we’re extremely pleased.” Mary said that the menu – which uses all local meats and as much local produce as possible – has been very well-received by the community. “It’s kind of a gastro-pub,” Mary explained. Adding that there are some vegan and gluten-free options, and that everything (except three desserts that were just too good to leave off the menu) are completely made from scratch. And Danny, Mary’s son and a graduate of the World Brewing Academy at Siebel Institute of Technology, has been brewing up a storm in preparation for the opening of the brewery building just a few weeks after the 11/11 grand opening. So far on tap he’s got an American lager, the

Alpha Ale, the Pumpkin Ale and the Double Team White IPA. But those options will be increasing rapidly as Wild Wolf has gone from a 1½ barrel system (a nanobrewery) to a 15 barrel system and they are now officially a micro-brewery. And for now, things are going swimmingly. “We’ve had a few bumps and hiccups,” said Mary, “but I’m really exceptionally happy.” But wait, there’s more. In addition to the brewpub and the brewery building, Wild Wolf will open a beer garden this spring, and Mary has been working closely with Don Rich to turn the old tobacco shed-looking buildings on the property into a little shopping village. Don and his wife, Victoria, have already moved Zestivities! (a unique gift shop) from Crozet into a small space next to Wild Wolf, but it is slated to move into a larger space a bit later this month. HomebrewZ! (the home brew supply shop formerly known as Wild Wolf) and ExtraZ! (an accessories shop) will also be open by Christmas. Next up? TidbitZ! – a wine and specialty foods shop. Stay tuned! “Going to get the Christmas tree.” STORY by LYNN COFFEY Looking back, one of the most anticipated holiday traditions in my life has been going to the woods in December in search of the perfect Christmas tree. It was my dad’s and my job to troop into the wilds behind our house, weeks beforehand, to scout out likely prospects. The only trouble with trees growing in the woods is they never quite measure up to the perfect ones standing in parking lots with the clear white light bulbs strung overhead. It took a lot of walking and looking to find one with at least three good sides that would pass a young girl’s approval. The sparse side would always be finagled into the corner of the living room where no one could see its offending nakedness. One December I recall finding a white pine that looked full and bushy from any angle and I’d make daily runs to check on it until the appointed time of cutting. My excitement knew no bounds on the Saturday morning I led my dad to the spot it was growing and found

14 NELSON COUNTY LIFE DECEMBER 2011

instead only a fresh-cut stump, oozing with pine sap. I was as outraged as only a young girl can be when a prize is snatched out from under her very nose! Another time we brought home a tree, set it up and were standing back admiring it when my mother let out a shriek. Closer inspection revealed hundreds of tiny seed ticks crawling up the living room walls and across the floor. The only recourse was to drag it back to the woods from whence it came where it eventually turned brown and became a perch for the birds. The first Christmas after marriage is supposed to be filled with romance and I, as a 21 year old bride, explained the Christmas tree tradition and how I wanted to make it part of our new life. So we piled in our old Jeep, making a bad last minute decision to take our three puppies along for the ride and headed for a wooded section near where we lived. Rose colored glasses firmly in place, I envisioned my new hubby and I strolling hand in hand through the woods together, puppies romping with wild abandon beside us. In actuality, the pups didn’t do too well on their solo ride out. What they got was car sick and the retching noises coming from the back seat sort of took away from the festive air. The new husband wasn’t as patient as dear old dad and chopped down the first Charlie Brown tree he came to, throwing it in the back of the jeep where the pups emptied the last of their stomachs on it. The tree had to be sprayed down with water and had a few broken limbs after the traumatic ride home but was propped up in the corner nevertheless. It didn’t look too bad after a string of lights and some ornaments were hung on its sagging branches....until our pet raccoon came in, made a mad dash for the trunk and proceeded to climb up, knocking the entire tree over. With red balls rolling across the floor and the bucket of sand spilling onto our new avocado green shag rug, the husband covered his eyes and fled. The wife, I recall, cried. There was the tree we had to secure to the curtain rod with a piece of wire to keep it upright. And the giant 14 footer I topped out of a neighbor’s blue spruce and hauled back to the camp, only to have to cut it three times just to get it in the house. And who could forget the one we sprayed with artificial snow, making it look very Christmassy until the “snow” turned into a white, gelatinous substance that stuck to all the lights and ornaments, to say nothing of the floor. Oh the memories! In the last ten years we’ve broke tradition and cut a leafless sassafras tree which abound on our property and strung white lights through the bare branches and hung long silver tinsel that shimmers when the door is opened. There are no needles to vacuum up and the grandkids love the fact that they can sit under the tree. We’ve never had one of those color coordinated trees where all the decorations match or had a theme such as “The Country Look” or “Victorian Lace.” I’ve always felt a person’s Christmas tree should be an extension of themselves so ours was filled with ornaments like the hammered copper angel I labored over when I was in Brownies. Or the green plastic balls with brightly colored stripes that were my grandparents only tree decorations during the Great Depression. There were my parent’s German ornaments made of delicate spun glass that somehow never got broken all through the years. And the orange and green bubble lights that fascinated me as a child. I still love dragging out the boxes marked “Christmas Things” and unwrapping each treasure from its nest of newspaper, marveling again at all the memories that are attached to each piece. Like the white doves I cut out from Christmas cards one year because I was too poor to buy any new ornaments. Or the painted green sled made from popsicle sticks that my daughter made me in the second grade that accompanies the little plaster of Paris circle with her tiny fingerprints imprinted on it. There is the angel tree-topper that’s hard to put on and even harder to keep straight. And the simple brown cross made of twigs that reminds us what Christmas is really all about; the babe in the manger who willingly came to earth so that we may live forever. Each tree brought home, each ornament hung, will stay in my heart forever; a sweet remembrance of past Christmases where nothing ever matched but somehow fit together perfectly. From our cabin to yours, may each of you have a blessed and holy Christmas! NCL

Old cabins and barns, abandoned along a roadside, connect with your soul for a fleeting moment as you drive past. Their haunting beauty speaks to you. For some, they become part of an enduring passion. Antique wood from cabins and barns are given new life through the vision of Jeffery Caudill and those who have made it their life’s work to reclaim and repurpose remnants of our heritage. Caudill envisions the best repurposing of this rare, special wood into a home, and then works with a crew based in West Virginia to find treasures and hone them into a museum-quality restoration. The reclamation process is part of an award-winning documentary on the website, antiquecabinsandbarns.com, and may soon be featured in a CMT TV program. Naily boards and timbers from an antique Amish barn in Pennsylvania are now integrated throughout a luxurious mountain retreat, the Dobie Mountain Lookout. The latest find comes from a farm in Ontario, Canada, and will be used for a design gallery and offices for Winterwoods Homes under construction in North Carolina. The size and patina of these 300-year-old timbers promises to be a work of art. “When you step inside a Winterwoods Home, it feels like your own personal sanctuary,” says Caudill.

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your brilliant winter views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of freshly fallen snow, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

Where does our music come from? In the case of Nelson County, the traditional music – played on fiddles, banjos, guitars, dulcimers, harmonicas– and variously called “old-time,” “bluegrass” and, later, “country,” was a melange derived

from various European and African influences – English ballads, Irish and Scottish fiddle music, religious hymns and African-American blues. But it is music that was brought here by people, and one of the groups with the greatest influence on its evolution were the Irish who

came here in the 1840s and 50s to escape the great potato famine and English rule and, in the process, built our railroads, tunnels, turnpikes and canals. Clann Mhór, Gaelic for “The Great Family,” is a local organization devoted to researching and preserving the contributions of Irish immigrants to this region, and its focus of late has been on the workers who built the Afton Railroad Tunnel, engineered by Claudius Crozet. Kevin Donleavy, one of the group’s members, is particularly interested in the musical legacy of the Irish who came to Nelson County, and he is helping to organize a concert of Irish music for The Nelson Music Project that is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson Center on U.S. 29 in Lovingston. The King Golden Banshee Band plays a variety of traditional Irish music on guitars, fiddles, tinwhistles, flutes, banjos and bodhráns (a framed drum descended from old Irish war drums). Songs such as “Danny Boy,” “Old Apples in Winter,” and “The Lakes of Pontchartrain” tell stories that come down from the old country. Irish dancers will also perform, as will local folk musicians Kim and

Jimbo Cary. Donleavy says Cecil Sharp, an English music teacher who became interested in doing field work on folk songs that had crossed the Atlantic with the Irish, Scottish and English who came to America, came to Nelson County in 1918 and interviewed Fannie and Alex Coffey in White Rock, Philander Fitzgerald in Afton, Dol Small in Nellysford and Maria Tomes, an 85-year-old former slave of the Coleman family in the Rockfish Valley area. Sharp annotated the notes of the songs he heard while his secretary, Maud Karpeles, took down the words. Later, in 1950, Karpeles returned to Nelson and recorded songs sung by Florence and Napoleon Fitzgerald, descendants of Philander Fitzgerald. Donleavy believes that their songs may have come from the Irish railroad workers who worked on the Afton Railroad Tunnel in the 1850s. Donleavy and the King Golden Banshee Band will be keeping those Irish influences alive at the Dec. 3 concert at the Nelson Center. There will also be a display of railroad artifacts. Tickets will be $10 at the door. Proceeds go to Clann Mhór and the Nelson Music Project of Oakland Museum. Call 434-2635940 for more information. NCL

No, Virginia, Santa Claus will not help you with your taxes.

By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County

Santa Claus and Taxes No, Virginia, Santa Claus will not help you with your taxes. However, along with putting up the holiday lights, December is a good time to put your tax and financial house in order. Here are a few last minute reminders: If you have employment or selfemployment income, there are several methods to reduce your current tax by investing funds for retirement. These include Individual Retirement Accounts and 401K plans. Pay yourself first - contribute as much as possible before year-end to these plans. We can assist in recommending the best choices and amounts for you. Are you self-employed? If so, it is time to start organizing your deductions for the year. Most selfemployed individuals overpay their income taxes because they overlook deductions or simply fail to keep track of them. And (no surprise!), the IRS loves to audit those with no organization system. We can assist in recommending a method of organization that works for you. December is a good time to have a

review with your investment advisor. If you have investments in taxable accounts, review your portfolio prior to year-end to consider selling holdings with loss positions. You may deduct up to $3,000 in net losses per year. If you have not had adequate tax withholding or payments for the year, there is still time to make corrections. Additional withholding can be paid prior to December 31st. If you do not have wages subject to withholding, you should make an estimated tax payment prior to mid-January for 2011. Our community has many charitable organizations that are in need of additional funding this year. If you itemize deductions, payments made prior to year-end by check or credit cards are deductible. If you have a large pledge to satisfy, consider donating appreciated stocks. You will avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation and you can deduct the full value of the donation. While you’re in the attic pulling out the holiday decorations, take

some time to organize unneeded clothes or household items. Make a list of the items and their estimated value prior to delivering them to the thrift shop. You’ll feel great having a clean attic and helping the thrift shop restock their shelves. Don’t forget to get a receipt if you want to deduct these items. If you are over age 70 ½, you should verify that you have taken the full amount of your Required Minimum Distribution from IRA and similar accounts. There is a provision that expires in 2011 that allows you to direct all or part of your RMD directly to a charity. This avoids the income tax on the distribution, but you may not also claim a charitable donation for the amount. As 2011 draws to a close, we give thanks for the wonderful community in which we live and work. Enjoy the holidays and spread the joy among family, friends, and those that are in need. Best wishes for the happiest of holiday seasons and blessings for the New Year.

Interesting tidbits of information about our local real estate market

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

It’s the holidays… a time to enjoy the festivities with family and friends. For some of us, it may be a time to lighten up and perhaps not take life too seriously, as a gift at home states: “Don’t take life too seriously, because no one gets out alive.” No!!! That gift is not for me … it’s for a friend, someone I know… seriously! However, in my own attempt to be of good cheer, I shall not darken your candlelight, joy filled homes with anything that could be perceived as too heavy, depressing, or otherwise unstable. Here are some interesting tidbits of information about the 2011 real estate market in Nelson County and Wintergreen. What month did the most residential sales occur? October has had the highest number of sales followed by April. The slowest months have been August followed by July. Even though the 4th quarter has not concluded, it appears that the 3rd quarter

will have been the slowest. What area within the county has seen the most sales? Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the area locality with the most sales is Afton with 12 at an average price of $283,331. Arrington has seen the second highest number of sales with 11 at an average price of $151,841 and a median of $100,000. What area is the most expensive? Most affordable? Excluding Wintergreen, the most expensive county locality is Afton with an average price per sq ft of $164 and the least expensive is Wingina with an average price per sq ft of $48. What was the most expensive residential property to sell in Nelson County? The highest selling property sold at $1,050,000; it was a new construction, custom built, log home in Stoney Creek with 2.51 acres and 5,628 finished sq ft. Least expensive residential find? The least expensive home was a distressed

property with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, built in 1976 on .96 acres in Arrington; it sold for $20,000. What was the largest home sold? 3 homes sold with more than 5,000 finished sq ft; the largest was on Wintergreen Mountain with 7,644 sq ft and it had 9 bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms. Smallest? The smallest residential sales included a 550 sq ft condo at Wintergreen and a 670 sq ft home in Afton. What was the largest acreage sold? The largest unimproved property to sell was a 1,617 acre parcel in Lovingston with a price tag of $2.3 million. Smallest parcel sold? The smallest was a .38 acre parcel at Wintergreen which sold at $42,000. Have distressed sales made an impact? Nelson County has not been as hard hit as many areas across the nation. However, we have not been immune to the housing crisis either; 24% of all sales in Nelson County, including Wintergreen, have been

distressed sales (foreclosures, short sales, etc…) Excluding Wintergreen, the localities that have been most affected are Arrington with 7 and Afton with 6 distressed sales. What is the longest that a home has been on the market before selling? There are 5 homes that took more than 1,000 days to sell. A condo at Wintergreen took 1,364 days (3.74 years) to sell. Shortest days on market? On the flip side, 8 homes sold in less than 10 days on market. in vets’ offices, restaurants, and hardware stores,” said Betsey Abbey, who volunteers at the thrift store and took the lead in securing places for the trees. “Top to bottom, all over Nelson.” Each of the trees will have paper ornaments featuring animal pictures. A person can choose an ornament (to keep!) and on the back there will be a wish list of things the shelter needs – from bleach and paper towels to puppy chow and kitty litter to gift cards and cash donations. When one or all of the things are purchased, the items can be returned to the place of the tree or directly to the shelter. Trees will be up through the first week of January. Not only is it great for the animals, it’s great for the whole family: “This is a good way to teach your kids to share,” said Kathy. “There are other things that need help at Christmas.” NCL

Care for Crape Myrtles Crape Myrtles or Lagerstroemia are a group of plants ranging from a few feet tall to over 18 feet in height. The colors available to designers and homeowners has mushroomed due to breeding in the US and abroad. What used to be a market dominated by about 5 varieties is now an open ended chasm of colors and sizes that have moved crape myrtle from the back to the front of the border, or anywhere between. However, lack of care and poor maintenance of this group often times leaves the homeowner feeling less than happy about this selection. Here are my top success tips about this group and what to avoid. In my experience, the number one cause of crape myrtle death after transplanting is lack of water. In particular during the first year to 18 months or the ‘establishment time’, Lagerstroemia require about an inch of rain per week – slightly more during the hotter months of summer; slightly less during the colder months of winter. While the leaves will curl warning you of moisture stress in the summer, winter offers no such indicator. Winter’s irrigation answer lies in well-timed watering when the weather is about to change drastically from warmer to cold. If the plant is under moisture stress and the mercury drops rapidly, the water that was in the tissue cannot be replaced and severe desiccation or plant death results – in particular if the cold snap is lengthy. However, if the plant is watered adequately, the plant stores up reserves in the roots allowing for this transpiration and no damage follows. Once established, however, Lagerstroemia are relatively drought tolerant. Feeding crape myrtle is all about one application in the spring using

a low nitrogen, acid based fertilizer with a formulation like a 5-10-5. The fertilizer should be placed in the water or ‘drip-line’ of the plant’s weekly watering and should always be timed with a nice soaking. Higher nitrogen fertilizers will result in tons of leaves and growth but with very little flowers. When in a quandary as to whether to feed or not, base your decision on the leaf color and presence or absence of blooms – deep green color with little to no blooms = no fertilizer; light green color with tons of blooms = fertilize. Contrary to popular belief, Crape Myrtle need FULL sun. Full sun is defined by at least 8 hours of direct sun a day in the summer. The result of placing these plants in the shade is a lighter color to the foliage, poor bloom set and leaf drop. If you do not have a site that offers this amount of sun, do not waste your money on this plant. Insect control is primarily found in eliminating the impact of one chewing bug – the Japanese beetle. Control with this insect can be found in any contact insecticide like Sevin or a systemic insecticide like Bayer Systemic Insecticide. Typically the timing of the application is around the first of June for either insecticide. Obviously if you are using a systemic insecticide, only one application is necessary per year while in using any contact insecticide, multiple applications are necessary. If you are not yet using Bayer Systemic Insecticide, why? It really is that good… In regards to pruning, don’t whack away at the Crepe Myrtle but carefully remove the lower branches in an effort to create more of a tree than a bush shape. The end result show off its nice bark in the winter months. Merry Christmas!

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My knee hurts. Would a cortisone shot fix it? Cortisone (or steroid) shots can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal pains. Cortisone is a steroid chemical that the body naturally produces. In a shot, we use a man made version. Its purpose is to reduce inflammation. Often a joint or bursa hurts a lot when there is inflammation from an injury, overuse, or arthritis. The steroid is put directly into the joint where the inflammation (and resultant pain) is by a shot. This allows us to use a high dose of steroid into one specific area so that there really aren’t many side effects in the body overall. The following are a few situations where a steroid shot may be considered. A painter who works with his arms overhead starts to get shoulder pain. We try exercises and medicines by mouth, but he is still having a lot of trouble. A shot of steroid in the shoulder may cut down inflammation enough to both stop his pain and allow his joint to heal. Another example might be a runner with knee pain. After careful determination that there is no broken bone or

torn tendon, a steroid shot placed into the knee may give great relief. Or, an otherwise healthy person starts to have hip pain every time she lies down on her left hip. There is a bursa there that can get irritated and does quite will with a steroid injection. Cortisone shots can be used many other places as well, these are just a few examples. Certainly there are risks from a steroid shot, but they are generally minor and rare. It does hurt a little as it is a shot! But we use a numbing spray before inserting the needle. Skin color change in the injection area is possible. On occasion people get a “steroid flare” where the pain gets worse before it gets better. Finally, joint infection is possible (but very uncommon). Doctors use careful sterilizing techniques to prevent this. So, if you have joint pain that is not going away, see your doctor. Perhaps a steroid injection would help you. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Have a question for him? Email him at AskTheDr@ nelsoncountylife.com. Even the early morning dusting of snow didn’t keep people from filling up the big tent at Cardinal Point’s 8th Annual Oyster Roast. Served up by Rappahannock River Oyster Company, guests spent the weekend pairing the molluscs with plenty of wine and live music from The Cashmere Jungle Lords and The Atkinsons.

34 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2011

It will probably be mid-December before Lelia and Darrell Stevens are done cleaning these shoes. Money raised from sales will be donated to the Salvation Army location in Waynesboro and Lynchburg. To get your hands on a pair or two, call Lelia at 434-361-2220.

After October’s Tough Mudder event at Wintergreen Resort, there were lots of tired, hungry, bruised athletes up on that mountain. There was plenty of beer, quite a few energy bars, and plenty of mud. Lots and lots of mud. And the muddiest thing of all? The shoes. That’s why many of the Mudders decided to abandon their kicks after the event. Too tired and/or exhilarated to worry much about washing them, many threw off their shoes and started celebrating (and/or recovering) right away. No one thought much about those shoes (there turned out to be about 400 or 500 pairs of them) until Darrell Stevens of Beech Grove drove past the field and saw them just sitting there. And since he hates to see much of anything go to waste, he brought them home in his pickup truck. “When he first brought them to the house, I just kind of looked at them,” said his wife, Le-

lia, of the 800-plus caked-with-mud sneakers. But then they came up with a plan – Lelia and Darrell decided to sell the shoes for five bucks a pair to benefit the Salvation Army. And whatever shoes are left will head over there, too. “Except the Salvation Army doesn’t want dirty shoes,” said Lelia. And these were really dirty shoes. After power washing them outside, Lelia takes them into her house and washes 4 to 5 pairs a day. Every day. So far, the Stevens have sold 60 pairs and hope to raise at least $300 for the Salvation Army. Lelia says that after her thorough cleaning, some of them look almost as good as new. They have all shapes and all men’s and women’s sizes. The Stevens said, though, that they’re just happy to help. “We didn’t do this for the notoriety or the publicity,” Lelia explained. “Salvation Army deserves it. We just try to do little things to help people.” NCL

For months they called us crazy. But now, they can call us Tough Mudders. With temps hovering in the low 30s that chilly October morning, TEAM NELSON conquered the mammoth 9+ mile obstacle course at Wintergreen Resort. Though happy and cheery in their team picture (between nerves and nearby port a-johns, we’re not sure we ever got the entire team to say cheese at the same time), the grueling obstacle course tested the team’s physical and mental toughness. At the finish line, there were smiles, beer, a free t-shirt and a sweatband. And oh yes, the memories. Greg Ebelherr and Mike Manthey

As part of money raised from shirt sales and sponsorships, TEAM NELSON was proud to present Wintergreen Adaptive Sports with a $500 donation. Many thanks to those who bought shirts, as well as to our sponsors: Blue Mountain Brewery, Nelson Physical Therapy & Wellness Center, Anytime Fitness, Mountain Area Realty, Rice & Rice Dentists, and Zestivities.
