So tough man Tommy finally got the stomach bug that’s been going around. Which means here I am, tapping away at a keyboard, when I could be enjoying this fine spring day snacking on squirrels. But I’m not complaining. Yvette – who will likely be beatified into sainthood if she keeps up this pace – is on double duty today with Adam and Peyton. The division of labor in this magazine factory typically goes something like this: Tommy gets Peyton in the mornings. Yvette gets Adam in the mornings. They swap children after nap time and then return home to throw ingredients and pans around in the kitchen and call it dinner. Every now and then, these amateur food scientists will drop me a sample. I really do think they should be eating more protein. Like, exclusively. Just a suggestion. We dogs love our meat. But we won’t turn down an apple core, either. This family should own an orchard for the amount of apples they eat every week. As the weather warms up, the grown-ups tease me with the smell of a cow on the grill, and the junior publisher throws me a half eaten apple. If you close your eyes, Fujis taste like flank steak.

At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I must add I am certainly charmed by little Peyton. She’s got wavy curls like a Portuguese Water Dog and her sugar kisses are absolutely delicious. I am very much looking forward to curling up with her for naps when she gets her big girl bed later this year. Adam’s bed is alright but with all of the tractors and books he’s got on it, I’d rather sleep on a pin cushion. But after seven years of publishing this priceless rag, I think these humans have done all right. It’s almost dinner time but since Tommy is still feeling puny, and saltines aren’t my thing, I’m going outside to befriend a squirrel or two. Enjoy! Nick Stafford

The Art of Becoming Smarter At Basic Necessities it starts with wine. Even though analyzing wine seems antithetical to the French mentality from which I learned to love and understand wine, I nevertheless tell my class to examine each wine (observing color, sniffing, swirling and only then tasting) for in drinking we kill off brain cells, while the art of studying something ‘grows’ them. Are you with me? So consider the latest theory, that of the herd of antelope. The herd can only run as fast as its slowest member. And this slowest member, at the back of the herd, is the one likely to be eaten by the panther, thus, by natural selection and survival of the fittest, allowing for the strengthening of the overall gene pool. The slowest antelope is culled and the herd now moves faster. Still with me? Now, the following may be a syllogistic or perhaps more accurately an enthymematic stretch, but let’s consider the question of your brain cells. All two of them. Since your brain can only think at the speed of its fastest cells… and alcohol kills brain cells, it follows that in drinking we’re killing off the slowest cells. Thus making ourselves

smarter. Alright, if the above rhetoric didn’t convince, let me ask if you’ve ever felt like conversation just flowed after a glass or two of wine? Ever wondered if indeed you really were that much wittier with the ancient elixir coursing inside? Well, turns out that just maybe you’ll wake the next morning and realize it wasn’t all a figment of your imagination. Studies have shown that there is a connection between the level of polyphenols in the brain and the brain’s activity. Polyphenols increase the brain’s activity by relaxing the vessels, making them wider and thus increasing their capacity. This serves not only to pump more blood to the head but also to increase the amount of oxygen and other nutrients which are necessary to the brain. Resveratrol, found in red wine, is a specific example of a polyphenol. And one of the foods with the highest polyphenol content of all? Dark chocolate. To kill off sluggish brain cells, try: Michel Picard, Pinot Noir, 2006 – Burgundy lovers, here’s a treat— soft raspberry and cherry fruit laced with earth tones—that doesn’t break the

For about two months, Justin Painter of Roseland has been making bracelets out of 550 Paracord – something he learned how to do from an after-school program teacher, Mr. Rose, at Nelson County Middle School where he’s in 6th grade. But Justin had already heard about these bracelets – and the wonder of paracord – on some of his favorite TV shows: The Discovery Channel’s Man, Woman, Wild and Dual Survival. (FYI: AMC’s hit zombie story Walking Dead, is another family favorite). Recently, his dad, Curtis Painter, made a jig for Justin so that he can make the bracelets even faster – sometimes up to a dozen an hour. The bracelets he makes are standard size – 8 or 9 inches, but what makes them special is that every inch of bracelet holds an entire foot of 550 Paracord: the stuff that connects parachutes to the people who need them to float down to earth. Justin has always been interested in the outdoors and his mom, Suzanne Painter, said he’d always had a survivalist mentality. But after years of hunting with his grandfather, playing in the woods, and camping, he decided to take it to the next level. Plus, he said, “It feels kind of awesome to have my own business in middle school.” When he first decided to make the bracelets, some of his friends were kind of wary – why would a middle school boy want to wear a bracelet? But when they learned of the bracelets’ special abilities (tying bundles of wood, climbing trees, making lean-tos), the bracelets got real popular real quick. Even some of the elementary schoolers are sporting them now, said Suzanne, noting her son’s entrepreneurship. “A lot of the kids, they have to do chores; like, little things that they’ll make $5 or $6 from their parents,” said Justin, who is enjoying a bit of freedom as well as a little pocket money. “But I’m making money of something I do. I have something to show for it.” The money is nice, said Justin, but for him the best part is that he’s doing something with his hands and making something that could potentially save someone’s life, like it does on Man, Woman, Wild. “My favorite thing is I like sitting down and doing stuff and watching how it comes together. It’s not all about making and selling them,” said Justin, who has seen people on his favorite TV shows use paracord for everything from repelling a cliff to making a makeshift bow and arrow to replacing shoe laces.

“I’ve always liked taking stuff apart and seeing how it all goes together and creating whatever I can think of.” Mom Suzanne is pleased with Justin’s newest hobby, too, and doesn’t mind that he’s got some money of his own these days. “I think that this is really something that he can learn the value of work from, and that nothing comes for free,” she said. “I’m hoping that by learning the value of money and what it takes to make money, he can appreciate it a little bit.” The bracelets, which Justin can make in just about any color requested, started off as a way to promote his survivalist mentality while making a few bucks – he was selling them for $5 each. But when his PawPaw, a cancer survivor, asked Justin to make one in purple and white to support the Relay for Life, something sparked within the boy and he stopped caring about his pocket money and started selling bracelets to support the Relay. Justin now has several organizations (including the Recreational Baseball League he plays for that got all of its equipment stolen at the start of this season) that he makes bracelets for in various colors. The proceeds he makes from bracelets in those colors benefit the organizations they represent. “It makes me feel good because I know a lot of people donate stuff like this, but it makes me feel good knowing that I’m helping, too,” said Justin. “I can make a difference with what I’m doing and I’m helping people and the whole community.” NCL

Letting in the spring light The spring color palette is breathtaking, but how can I keep the bright colors in my house from fading? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful spring views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. This spring, old is new again in Piney River where Dale and Vanessa Plummer are (re)opening Campbell’s. Once upon a time – since 1993 until about eight years ago – it was called Campbell’s Grocery. And now, after a brief stint as the Piney River General Store and a longer one out of business, the Plummer’s are re-introducing the country store as Campbell’s General Store. “My wife asked some people what they thought it should be called and they all said it had been Campbell’s and would always be Campbell’s” said Dale. “It went through three generations of Campbells, from what I understand.” After being in the Campbell family for about 75 years, Eddie Seamen owned it for about four years around 2000, according to Dale, still calling the place Campbell’s Grocery. When Dale bought the 30s-era building in 2004, he did a bit of remodelling and leased it out. However after only about nine months, the convenience store (then called the Piney River General Store) shut down. Dale and Vanessa have been working hard to re-open Campbell’s though, and the building is almost ready to go – it’s slated to open sometime between the 15th of April and the first of May – but there’s been a lot of necessary work done recently. continued on page 19

Mountain Landmarks, Part II STORY by LYNN COFFEY Last month’s column highlighted some of the local landmarks people are familiar with in the Nelson/Augusta County area. There were quite a few so I decided to write them in a two-part series so I wouldn’t have to leave any of them out. Here’s the rest of the list. The “GUM TREE”: Located near the top of Campbell’s Mountain Road, the GUM TREE is one of the most familiar landmarks for hunters, loggers and those who live nearby. The tree was once full and green but time and severe weather has taken their toll and much of the tree has now decayed and fallen down. No doubt when the tree is finally gone, the place where it stood will still be known by its former name. The “BALL FIELD”: Back in the early 1900s Tom Coffey, a baseball aficionado, actually build a regulation baseball diamond on top of a high ridge on his property in Chicken Holler. Tom’s son, John Massie Coffey, was such a good ball player that the Washington Senators sent a scout to this area and enlisted both Johnny and his good friend Hercy Coffey of White Rock for the big leagues. In the end, both men decided they’d rather stay in the mountains where they were raised and turned down the offer. But Johnny told me he always wondered how different their lives might have been if they became professional baseball players. The “STOMPIN’ GROUND”: This is another meeting place that the bear hunters use and is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Fork Mountain overlook. George Allen said it’s where hunters converge to talk over the day’s hunt. “SQUAREMOUTH ROCKS”: This old mountaintop cave can best be seen from the North Fork road but is actually located at the end of Chicken Holler on the old Tom Coffey property. It is said that the small cave with the perfectly square entrance, was used by Native Americans who carved hand and footholds into the rocks in order to access the cave opening. These handholds are still visible. There is a hole in the top of the cave which allows smoke from a fire to escape but not large enough to let the weather in, making it a perfect shelter for the Indians to inhabit. The view down to Tye River is spectacular and the last time I walked out to SQUAREMOUTH someone had carved a picture of Jesus into a small cedar tree that was growing there. “NORVAL’S FLAT”: This level section of land on the west side of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Irish Gap once housed the shanties built by the South River Lumber Company for employees cutting timber in that vicinity. When the timber was all cut, the shanties were loaded onto rail cars and hauled to their new location on the dinky railroad which was built through the mountains by the lumber company. This area was said to be named after a black family by that last name that lived here in the early days. “SPY ROCK”: Now a section of the Appalachian Trail, SPY ROCK is a huge outcropping located above the Montebello Fish Hatchery, on the

The Gum Tree, near the top of Campbell’s Mountain Rd., is showing its age. road to the old Averill Campbell homestead. Though it is a tough climb, many make the trip just to see the commanding view from the top. The “LISTENING TREE”: This particular tree, a small pine with low hanging limbs, is located on the left hand side of the Bald Mountain road and used by hunters who climb up to listen for the dogs that have struck a hot trail. The “HICKORY STAND”: This place, known by all the native mountain people, is located at the old Hercy Fauber home, which is now Skylark Farm. It was a lard stand of hickory trees that joined the tree farm on the Fork Mountain side. “DRY POND”: George Allen named the final two locations as places well known to all the area bear hunters. DRY POND is a wet weather pond located by the St. Mary’s river which during dry periods is just a small recess in the ground. “THE HACKIN’”: This familiar spot is located on the North Fork of the Tye River, above Clarence Coffey’s old homeplace, between the Pleas Taylor property and the Tye River. By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County April is Financial Literacy Month When I was a child, my family did their banking with a local bank. Every week, I accompanied either my Mother or my Father to the bank as they handled their weekly banking. This wonderful bank was home to the president’s parrot, who allegedly made loan decisions for the bank customers. Our weekly visits to the bank provided me the opportunity to feel comfortable in the environment of a bank and talking to the bank officials. This simple act of taking me to the bank each week - whether consciously or not on the part of my parents - provided me with an introduction to banking and personal finances. By the time I graduated from high school, I knew how to handle my checking account and basic banking routines. I also knew that when something was out of order with my account, I only needed to visit our friendly bank. I was particularly fond of the sweet woman that would occasionally call me or my Mother to ask if Julia was planning to make a deposit soon – a friendly way to suggest that my account was in

danger of being overdrawn. This was not a formal education – perhaps you could call it education by association. However, it is an experience that is now absent in most American households today. Thanks to direct deposit and electronic banking, most parents rarely have a need to visit the bank – other than to pull money from the ATM. Financial literacy in our country has declined significantly during recent years. Our young adults are bombarded with credit offers – but they have not even been provided with the tools to handle a basic checking account. Virginians have little to brag about – our state ranks 29th in the country in financial literacy according to a recent survey. Many organizations, including the Virginia Society of CPAs, are now supporting a variety of financial literacy initiatives. The VSCPA has been a strong supporter of the new curriculum requirement for Virginia high school students, which requires a one-credit course in economics and personal finances. This requirement

is in effect for the graduating class of 2015. April is Financial Literacy Month. During the month, many organizations will be promoting financial literacy initiatives. Online sites have educational games and videos – try www.feedthepig.org, sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs. These are all wonderful resources – but the best education starts at home. Think about what your child or grandchild would learn if you eliminated direct deposit and took her to the bank each week. Or, if you helped your teen open a checking account when he gets a summer job. When your teens have their own earnings and need to file their own tax returns, provide guidance – but don’t do it for them. Show them how you file your returns or introduce them to your tax preparer. Most of all, don’t be afraid to talk about money in front of the children. You might not always have the best command of your own finances, but that education by association is the best!

Staging your home to spring ahead of the competition

Spring can breathe new life into the housing market. With the April showers, and May flowers come more buyers… and, oh yes, more sellers. If you are planning to sell your home this spring, you need to differentiate your home. How? Consider price, marketing, and condition. Set a market-driven price, hire an agent who will aggressively market your home, and make sure that your home is in tip-top shape. Here are a few staging tips that can help your home spring ahead of the competition. Prepare for staging. Before staging, a house must first be cleaned, painted, and repaired as needed. It must also be de-cluttered. Remove books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear the countertops. Depersonalize! Pack away anything that makes the house “yours” instead of “theirs”. Take down fam-

ily photos and put away the family heirlooms and collectibles. Strip to the bare essentials. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding. Create positive focal points. Take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas and entice the eye to a new focal point. Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view. Highlight the key rooms. Kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets. Thoroughly clean the entire

kitchen and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and freshen a bath with new towels, shower curtain, bath mats, candles, and flowers to set the ambiance of the room. Don’t forget the outside. Outdoor living space is very appealing to buyers. Treat your deck, porch or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers. Spruce up the appeal. Room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics such as silk, lamb’s wool, or satin. Arrange fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk, or indoors on a foyer stand,

dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser. Strive for cheerful and bright. Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing all window coverings to bring the outside indoors. Appeal to all the senses. Make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon. In today’s market much of the competition could be considered a “deal” or a “steal”. In order to be competitive, you must have “appeal”! Out with the New, In with the Old I am as guilty as the next. Oh, new, new, new! I’ll take the hot on the market supertunia, a million bells petunia, a surfinia petunia, a bacopa… Ok, these are nice plants and they have been bred for unique colors, habits and textures, but the green industry is so interested in the new, that often times we forget what got us here in the first place – the tried and true heirloom annuals that got us into this gardening hobby to begin with. Within this group of plants are the ones that my grandma used to plant in her flower beds while I watched and ‘attempted’ my first shot of landscaping. I’ve come a ways since then but those standard annuals are still high on my list of go to plants. Vinca has been around for a while. The genetics of today’s selections are not too far from where they were way back when and the colors are still as vibrant during the heat of the summer when other annuals are wilting. Plant these in full sun, and after they are established, take that vacation knowing that when you return they will still be in full bloom under a July heat wave. Try the Cora series – boasting colors like rose, lavender, pink and white. Seed begonias were some of the first annuals that I learned to grow some 21 years ago while working at my first job out of Tech in Virginia Beach. The mix that I still grow and love in all designs are the Cocktail and Prelude series. The Cocktail series has a bronze colored leaf that really needs at least 6+ hours of direct sun a day to keep the nice foliage color while the Prelude series has a glossy green leaf that can take a bit more shade. Both series bloom in pink, red, white and even mottled tones. Use them for their glossy green or bronze foliage as accents with other annuals. With their compact habit, they also make a good combination planter for the deck.

And don’t forget about annual geraniums - hardy, drought tolerant and vivid colors from May til frost. The smell of them still softly lands me on my grandma’s porch deadheading them in the middle of the summer under her watchful eye. Available in a plethora of colors, plant them in containers or at near back of the mixed garden with other lower growing annuals nestled near their base. Yes, you still may have to deadhead them from time to time, but the continued show late into the season with minimal help from the watering wand is a bonus. No annual garden is complete without those rich, 3-4 inch blooms found in the Zinnia family. Great for cutting and ideal for the middle to back of the border, Zinnias have never lost their place in the annual border. Available in vibrant pink, yellow, white, rose and even lime green. While it is an ageless myth that Marigolds deter insects in the garden (they actually attract mites), they are still a wonderful addition to the back of any border. Classified as the ‘French type’ of Marigolds, the Inca series boasts blooms that are nearly 4 inches in diameter and available in cream, yellow, gold and orange. Once established, my landscape has shown that they rarely have disease issues and offer a continuous show of color until well into the end of summer. And finally, no shade garden is complete without traditional Impatiens. Although sensitive to cold starts in this area (plant after May 15), Impatiens are available in a host of colors including white, rose, lavender, pink, red and even stripped/mottled colors. Once established, expect color well into the end of summer and beyond. Not to say that a whole host of new annuals should be avoided, but don’t give up on these tried and true heirloom varieties.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Cholesterol Last time I wrote about the dangers of high blood pressure. You may recall, hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease and strokes. As most people know, high cholesterol is another risky factor that can lead to heart disease, vascular disease, and strokes, so I thought I better give it some attention too. Like hypertension, high cholesterol is silent—in other words, it doesn’t hurt! Well, it doesn’t hurt like a kidney stone hurts, but it sure can hurt your blood vessels! It just does it quietly and behind the scenes over time. Gradually, it clogs blood vessels. Often people don’t know it was ever a problem until they find themselves in a hospital being told they had a heart attack. I’m not usually one for trying to scare people into taking care of their bodies, but high cholesterol is scary! The first step in fighting off this silent, blood vessel clogging enemy is knowing what you are up against. That means seeing your doctor to have your cholesterol checked by a blood test. You need to be fasting (no eating for eight hours) to get an accurate reading. Most guidelines suggest

that everyone over 20 years old have their cholesterol checked every five years, and more frequently if there is a problem. If your cholesterol is high, there are lots of things that can be done about it. The first step is (you guessed it) diet and exercise! Generally, foods lower in fat have lower cholesterol. Also, fatty cuts of meat are high in cholesterol, as are most pork products and the skins of turkey and chicken. Changing the diet helps to keep excess cholesterol out of the body. But, your own liver may be working overtime making excess cholesterol. To stop that, medications are needed. Whether you need a medication or not is for you to discuss with your doctor, as there are many factors to consider. So, get your cholesterol checked and keep those blood vessels flowing free! Surfing the Internet for Exercises There is so much information available on the internet at our disposal. Many clients research their aches and pains prior to their evaluation with me. The knowledge gained by the internet is helpful because it stimulates questions; education and understanding usually results in improved outcomes in physical therapy and fitness. However, there are many occasions when clients arrive at the office reporting they looked up some exercises on the internet, did the exercises and it made their symptoms worse. There can be many reasons for the increase in pain. First, it might be that the exercise was not quite appropriate for the client. It shouldn’t be that complicated, should it? You have an achy area and look up an exercise for that area, do the exercise and it should help, right? It depends. When I used to teach clinically, I used to tell my students that you could have ten patients with back pain in the same region and there might be ten different reasons for that

pain indicating ten different treatments. We are all individuals with varying medical histories, varying physical restrictions, varying body types and varying abilities and there can be ten different reasons why each person has pain in that particular spot. Secondly, when performing an exercise from a picture even with written instructions, your mind and body will attempt to mirror the exercise. But due to various restrictions that might be present, unconsciously, your body will find ways to “cheat” or compensate to perform the exercise. The professional then determines why your body is compensating and adjustments are made in your technique or a different exercise is offered. It happens frequently even with the simplest of exercises. Even with athletes, verbal and physical feedback and instruction from the professional to the client is instrumental for safety, joint protection, alignment, correct technique and advancement of your exercise

Buying local – and eating local – never really went out of style in Nelson County, but as the eat local movement grows in popularity around the country, Benjamin Thompson and Will Gray are making it a business. Together, they run The Rock Barn. “The Rock Barn is really a mission for good food,” said Benjamin, or Ben, a Culinary Institute of America-trained professional chef. “Good for the community, good for our neighbors, good for us.” As Will explained, there are many “agents” involved in getting meat from farm to table: farmer, the slaughterhouse, the butcher, and the chef. Only after it’s passed through the hands of at least those four agents, is it finally served as pork chops, steak, chicken, etc. “At the end of the day,” said Will, “the system only works as well as the worst person in it.”

“You can have the best pig on the planet, but if someone does a sloppy job with the kill or an amateur job on the butchering, you’re going to have poor quality meat.”

And that’s where The Rock Barn comes in, said Will: “We wanted to take a look at that system and see how we can improve it.” He and Ben work to connect farmers who are already raising great animals with the chefs that could make the most of the meat. The Rock Barn (based at Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington) does a bit of catering, but primarily works with one farm (Piney River Farms of Nelson) and one slaughterhouse (Donald’s Meat Processor of Lexington) to butcher and distribute top-quality pork to restaurants and locals – focusing on using as much of the animal as possible. “It’s the only respectful way to look at meat,” said Will.

“We’re chefs by trade and butchers by passion,” said Ben, who learned the trade mostly by doing a lot of reading and taking on a few courses at Iowa State. “Sometimes they say the best way to learn about wine is to buy a corkscrew. Right now, The Rock Barn’s pork is in about 30 Charlottesvillearea restaurants as well as at the Nelson Farmers’ Market. This spring, they are hoping to snag a spot at the Charlottesville Farmers’ Market, too. But what makes them unique, though, are their monthly pork shares, which works kind of like a CSA, but with no monthly commitment. Each month, The Rock Barn takes orders for a “share” of pork and each member gets 10 pounds of pork – usually in about nine varieties – complete with recipes. And while there is no official store front, The Rock Barn welcomes visitors to its Arrington office and processing center – though be warned that they may be cutting meat during the visit (and please call ahead!). Some of the restaurants The Rock Barn works with now are top of the line – like The Ivy Inn and the Clifton Inn – but they are also starting to work up agreements with local schools to provide them pork. “We are not a gourmet butcher,” said Will. “Our goal is to take some of these whole hog models and make them acceptable at more of an institutional level.” But at the same time, Will says he wouldn’t want people to buy from The Rock Barn just because it’s local. “But because it’s the best.” NCL
