on the cover Photographer: Hayley Osborne Along with Starlet, Luna is one of Anne Buteau’s TRECiest horses. Story on page 9.

Just when we thought we were running out of things to write about, Adam gives us some material. It’s deadline week and we had just put Peyton down for the night. After a meticulously elaborate bedtime routine that includes brushing teeth (Mom: Just a little bit. Adam: Let me do it!), finding the right toys to cuddle with (Fire truck! Red car! Blue car!), we are finally getting ready to “get cozy” and “tuck in.” But little boys can be hard-headed. 10 seconds before Hug–Kiss– “Mama love you,” Adam bounced up, his head smashing into my left cheek bone. You know when stars spin around a cartoon figure’s head? That was mama. As I slumped into a nearby chair to recover, Adam stopped rubbing his head and began crying. His arms outstretched, he jumped off the bed and ran to me. At this point, I wasn’t sure if the tear running down my cheek was from the collision or from the pride of seeing my son charge at me with love, knowing I was hurt. He hugged me tight and I told him I was okay and it was just an accident. He wrapped his arms around my neck hard, as I felt a knot begin to form just below my eye. This was

actually a good moment, if you can believe it. If there’s anything good about a physical injury – albeit minor – it is the fact it makes you grateful for what you have. Just the other day, toddling Peyton was walking under one of the maples out back when she tripped and landed on a root. I saw that knot on her forehead swell up just like mine. After a minute or two of crying and hugging, her wavy curls had slid back into position, hiding the bruise and framing the face of the sweetest little tough girl I know. Tommy is bruise free this week. Which is fine with me because I’m out of room to write. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com

That Rosé Time of Year I will accept any time of year for rosé so much do I love quaffing that pinkish liquid, but for most people, warm weather signals rosé. Rosé is the red wine drinker’s summer wine. Highly versatile in food pairings, rosé fills a niche on days too hot for red and pairs with barbeque, fish, grills, pastas, cheeses and is often a perfect compliment to Asian cuisine. My love of rosé probably stems from symbolic memory of glasses sipped on Mediterranean shores or beside olive groves and wisteria as the cicadas’ chant filled the soft evening air. Back then in the dark ages, rosé was not popular the world over and in Provence it often came in squiggly shaped bottles and wasn’t very good. It was all about what it represented: the Provençal light, the smell of lavender, a slice of heaven…. Now, however, there are excellent rosés and to help you choose from the vast array on wine shop shelves, I’ve listed what I consider the crème de la crème. Château Roubine, 2011- Appellation Côtes de Provence, this is the quintessential Provence rosé and one of the

oldest working vineyards in the area, dating from the Knights Templars. A blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Cabernet mostly with a “petit” percent, as they say, of Carignan, Tibouren, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Look for bright, mineral-laced aromas of pink grapefruit and anise, with a subtle floral quality. Tingly, tangy citrus and red berry fruit on the palate but enough acidity to keep it the perfect spring/ summer wine. Sip as an aperitif or pair with fish, shellfish, poultry, light pasta dishes. $16 Von Buhl, 2011 – New for us, this wine’s elegance, overall excellence and subtly of flavours surprised me when I tasted it earlier this year. From the Pfalz region of Germany and made from 100 % Pinot Noir, it has delicate strawberry aromas, beautiful acidity and will pair with salmon, goat cheeses, Asian cuisine. Not to be missed. $21 Knipser, 2011 – Also from the Pfalz in Germany, this was a favourite of many customers last year. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Redolent of fresh white peaches, red berries and cherries. Multilayered and complex. $22

Strawberry Patch

Mother’s Day Brunch

Domaine de la Mordorée, Côtes du Rhône Rosé, La Dame Rousse, 2011 - A perennial favourite at Basic Necessities. Made from Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre. Deep pink, slightly orange colour typical of Mordorée rosés. Aromas of crystallized oranges and cherries, hints of aniseed. Very round palate, fresh and a long finish. Pair with fowl, white meats, grilled lamb with Provence herbs, fish soup, fried fish, pastas, pizzas. National retail $18.99. Our price $16. Château de Ségriès, Tavel, 2011- No list of rosé would be complete without one Tavel and this example is from the beautiful de Lanzin family in Lirac (cousins to the Delormes at Mordorée.) A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette, Syrah. 90 pts. Wine Advocate. “Powerful and focused, with a big core of red cherry, raspberry and red currant fruit laced with spice and tobacco hints. A nice stony note weaves in on the finish, adding length and cut.” National retail: $19.99. Our price $18.

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE MAY 2012

“When I was a child, I was your typical ponycrazy child,” said Anne. “But my parents weren’t into horses.” Anne’s daughter, Elizabeth is 8. That’s about how old Anne was when she began taking riding lessons. And it’s a good thing she did. Today, Anne is one of six people on the United States Equestrian Team. She never gave up on her dream and now, therefore, will be traveling to Portugal in September to compete in the World Championship for a sport called TREC (an acronym for the French name of the sport – Techniques de Randonnée Équestre de Compétition). According to Anne, TREC is “a sport which suits horses and riders of any level and size because there are different levels… The idea is to develop horsemanship skills and the confidence to get around out in the wilderness.” Despite a fairly severe back injury in December of 2010, Anne (a transplanted Brit who’s been in Nelson since 1997 when she and American-born husband Dan came for a one-year job and never left town) has worked up her strength and competed for several months before being selected for the U.S. team. These days, when she’s not working as a natural hoof care provider, she is bouncing back and forth between her Shipman home and the training center in North Carolina. There, she trains with different horses and a variety of courses in order to prepare for the unique three-part competition she’ll be a part of at the end of the summer. When she arrives in Portugal (hopefully with Elizabeth in tow – husband, Dan, has to stay home and mind the farm), she meets her horse and has 10 days to train with the new animal. Then the competition begins: “The first part is a 45 kilometer ride,” Anne explained. There will be a map that she and her competitors will be allowed to look at (and copy down) for twenty minutes. “Then we go out and we get on our horses and we start going. We’ve never been to this place before so it will be totally new… You have to be concentrating the whole time.” After six or seven hours of riding, Anne and her teammates will – ideally – be in the right place when the points are tallied. Riders get points for making optimum time, coming into checkpoints from the right direction and following the proper course, among other things.

Anne Buteau of Shipman hopes to take her daughter Elizabeth with her to Portugal where Anne will compete in the TREC World Championship as a member of the U.S. team. Originating in France, the equestrian sport is gaining popularity in the U.S.

As if preparing for the TREC championships wasn’t enough, there is plenty of work to do on the farm. Besides raising animals, Anne spends much of her time as a natural hoofcare provider. The next day features two shorter portions of the competition. The first portion is an obstacle course: “You have to be in balance with your horse and your horse has to move really smoothly” whether it’s jumps or ditches or riding up and down and incline and going over bridges,” explained Anne. The final part of the competition is called Control of Gait. In this portion of the competition, the rider has to communicate with the horse and coax it to walk as fast as it can without changing into a trot and then to canter as slow as it can, without breaking the canter. She is particularly excited that her daughter and other young people are getting the chance to learn about TREC. Anne trains on most of her 6 horses and ponies since she’ll be working with a brand new horse for the competition, but says that Luna and Starlet are the “TRECiest.” Elizabeth, though, who recently attended a TREC workshop in Louisa where she was in charge of her pony, Gandi. continued on page 13

Letting in the spring light The spring color palette is breathtaking, but how can I keep the bright colors in my house from fading? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful spring views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen significant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year. 3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your breathtaking spring views. For those of you without blinds, I can take care of everything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of budding trees 0, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat. For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

Myth vs. Reality 3M™ Window Films for your home are so amazing I often wonder why they’re not in most homes. Below, I dispel some of the myths you may have heard: MYTH: Window tinting will make my windows or room dark, and ruin my views. REALITY: I perform free consultations and I will apply a variety of film samples on your windows. I will label them and explain to you how they perform. I guarantee that there will be at least one sample that provides a more stunning view than your current windows and will still let in a tremendous amount of sunlight. MYTH: Window tinting will bubble, peel, and distort. REALITY: 3M™ is one of the most reputable and innovative companies in the world, and we use their window films. They do not bubble, peel, or become distorted. They back their window film with a lifetime warranty. MYTH: Nothing can really protect the interior of my home except for shadles or blinds. REALITY: Window tinting is the solution! Knowledge is power, power is change.

“I just think that getting children to be more aware of the countryside and be safe produces adults who are more environmentally conscious,” said Anne. “It’s a really good sport for promoting recreational use of wilderness areas and state parks. You don’t have to have a fancy horse.” TREC is a relatively young sport and very new to the United States, so there aren’t any financial sponsors, but Anne said she couldn’t be more pleased to be representing her adopted country. “How often will you get the chance to support America in a sport?” she asks to anyone who asks her about her training regimen or the cost of competing. “It’s a really exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am determined to raise the money to get there!” said Anne. “And until I go, I have to work, work, work!” NCL If you’d like to help Anne meet her fundraising goal, you can contact her at www.hoofhelp.net or annebuteau@yahoo.com to schedule her to talk to your classroom, organization, or group of friends about TREC, navigating through the wilderness, natural horse care, or her experience as a representative of the country.

A Mother’s Day Tribute to “Bubba Jean” STORY by LYNN COFFEY Her name was Laverta Jean Bruce Coffey but her four children and several others she raised, affectionately called her “Bubba Jean” and the nickname stuck. In high school, the first time she laid eyes on a quiet, blond-haired boy by the name of Saylor Coffey she announced to her friends, “That’s the boy I’m going to marry,” even though they had yet to be introduced. It was something she knew in the depths of her heart and sure enough, they married after graduation. Becoming Saylor’s wife (or “Billy” as he was called) brought a different way of life right from the start. Like so many young married couples, they started out living with Billy’s parents until they could build a house of their own. Always a homebody, Laverta wanted nothing more from life than to be a good wife to the husband she adored and have his children. They had four; Teresa, David, Mike and Rebecca, who were the delight of her life. I made her acquaintance in 1980 when I moved to Love and we became neighbors. The Coffey family was blessed with an abundance of musical talent and was always in demand at gospel sings and church homecomings. Laverta played the upright bass and I can still see her in my mind’s eye, plucking those strings and harmonizing in her low alto voice.

The Rockfish Valley Foundation, Friends of Rockfish Watershed and the Rockfish Valley Community Center invite you to:

She had short black hair streaked with gray and dark, merry eyes. Her ample lap was always filled with squirming children or some type of animal, both of which she’d rise to the defense of if she thought they were being mistreated. But what I remember most was her laughter; rich and full bodied, just like the rest of her. One winter she slipped on the ice and severely broke her ankle. I was out delivering the Backroads newspapers and stopped in for a visit. There she was, lying on a hospital bed with her foot propped up, drinking ginger ale. “Come in and sign my cast”, she yelled good naturedly and wouldn’t let me leave until I had signed a bit of nonsense on it. In the spring of 1987 I began attending Mt. Top Christian Church in Love, where the Coffey’s were members. I loved sitting one row behind them, watching their crazy antics as they filed in for services. At a time when my own marriage was disintegrating, it pained my heart to see such unabashed joy and yet it strengthened my belief that good marriages were still possible. I watched as Laverta’s quiet faith grew in the years that followed and she and her youngest daughter, Bec, and I began singing together as a trio in church. Our practice sessions were filled with hilarity and it did my heart good to be around people who still knew how to laugh. We found we had a common interest in photography and I was impressed to know Laverta had set up a film processing lab in the bathroom of her home where she developed prints she took of the family. She had just begun going with me on some of my Backroads interviews when the unthinkable happened. Laverta’s life ended when at 42 years of age, she died in an auto accident. Her death devastated the whole community, leaving us numbed and raw. There were so many at her funeral they had to open the church windows so the people standing four-deep outside could hear the service. Healing was a slow process but gradually the family began to move on, their faith deepening through the tragedy. Five years later another unthinkable thing happened. The friendship Billy and I shared as neighbors suddenly caught fire and we married in the spring of 1993. I found myself living Laverta’s life, with a loving husband, four more children and two grandchildren I know she would have loved gathering on her lap. When Billy and I moved into our new log cabin, I came across the last studio portrait of Laverta and Billy found in a closet of his former home. I dusted it off and hung it on the wall among all the other photographs. I wanted everyone to know she would always be a welcome presence in our home; a dedicated Godly woman who loved and prayed for her family. And that is why on this Mother’s Day, I’d like to pay tribute to the special woman who will always be revered and remembered ... “Bubba Jean.” NCL

Rockfish Valley Watershed Improvement Plan Community Meeting May 16, 2012 at 7pm at the Rockfish Valley Community Center This meeting will unveil the Watershed Improvement Plan which details how the Rockfish River can return to a safe and healthy condition. The North Fork Rockfish, South Fork Rockfish and mainstem Rockfish River do not meet water quality standards for bacteria. In addition, Taylor Creek does not host as rich and diverse aquatic life population as it should. During a state-directed water quality study which took place from December 2010 to September of 2011, bacteria was determined to be coming from human sources including unsewered residences and failing septic systems, livestock directly depositing fecal matter into the streams, and pasture and residential lands. The sediment in Taylor Creek was determined to come from streambank trampling by livestock and channel erosion. After determining the sources of bacteria and sediment, a committee representing interested agencies, organizations, and local citizens began working on a Watershed Improvement Plan detailing ways to improve water quality in the Rockfish. Recommendations include fixing straight pipes and failing septic systems, providing alternative water sources for cattle, restricting cattle access to streams, planting trees along waterways to provide filtration and shade for the river, and improved management of pasturelands. The meeting will feature speakers from the State and local agencies involved, discussion and exhibits from local groups regarding available assistance for home and landowners. LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED sourced from favorite Rt 151 venues. Everyone is welcome to attend, learn more about the issues and easy ways to improve water quality in the Rockfish Watershed. Self-Employed? Need Help? Lower your tax burden with better record keeping.

By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Time to Pay the Piper! One of my earliest memories of tax filing dates back to the days when my Father would prepare his own return. For about a week prior to the deadline, his desk was full of papers and his disposition was beyond grumpy. Being an engineer, he was always punctual for every event… so it surprised me that the taxes were always delayed until the inevitable last minute. I remember the year that I rode with him to the post office late at night, so I could mail the taxes while he drove around the block. If you review the data on historical tax rates, you can understand his distress. Today, the average federal income tax rate for a median income family is under 6 percent – in 1968, it was about 10 percent. So, we should be happy, right? Well, there’s more to the story we now pay some type of user fee or consumption tax on everything that is purchased (yes, I do remember the days when Virginia had no sales tax!). And, income taxes do not include

the social security taxes imposed on working taxpayers. In 1968, the rate was about 6 percent – today it is more than 15 percent. If you are an employee, your employer pays half of this amount – but those that are self-employed pay the full amount. Self-employed taxpayers typically have the most difficulty in meeting their tax obligations. Not only is more record keeping required to prepare their returns, they typically have no withholding from their pay and are required to send quarterly payments to meet their payment obligations. And, when money is tight, the quarterly payments are often set aside, leaving these taxpayers with overwhelming tax liabilities. As with many large hurdles, the way to manage these liabilities is taken from Caesar’s war strategy – Divide and Conquer. For those that are faced with this dilemma, here is the simple Divide and Conquer strategy: • First, be sure that all returns are timely filed. The IRS will not work

with you until you have done so. • Secondly, estimate and pay your current year (2012) tax payments on time. This is the second IRS priority. • Finally, determine the amounts due for all prior years. Estimate how much you can reasonably afford to pay the IRS each month. Now that you are armed with your strategy, it’s time for battle. You can either complete Form 9465 and mail it to the IRS or contact them by telephone. If you have completed the first two steps and are able to make monthly payments that will eliminate the old debt in 3 to 5 years, the IRS will almost always accept your payment plan. Use this same Divide and Conquer strategy with any amounts due to the state as well. You will be surprised to find that the IRS and the states are generally willing to work out a reasonable payment plan. And, don’t forget that good recordkeeping is the key to reducing your overall tax burden, particularly if you are selfemployed.

The 2008 Tax Assessment for Nelson County has been reinstated

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Typically it is “out with the old and in with the new”, but not for Nelson County tax payers. The Board of Supervisors decided to reject the 2012 tax assessment and go back to the 2008 assessment… at least for the time being. Here is a quick overview of the tax assessment situation for Nelson County property owners. 2012 Tax Assessment - Rejected Don’t act so surprised! I heard rumblings of discomfort from quite a few property owners when the 2012 tax assessment was rolled out. Complaints were across the board – from alarm at such a drastic drop in value to concern for not receiving enough of an adjustment in value. Many of you spoke up and were heard. Whether incorrect or just inconsistent, the Board of Supervisors rejected the reassessment conducted by Blue Ridge Mass Appraisal. 2008 Tax Assessment - Reinstated Virginia code states that a county the size of Nelson must have

a new assessment every four to six years. The previous assessment was done in 2008, four years ago, so the county still has the remaining two years to reassess. The Supervisors are currently accepting bids and plan to award a contract to conduct the reassessment by the end of 2012. The selected company will be revisiting property owners to gather the necessary data needed to reissue new tax assessments to be released in January of 2014. Until the 2014 release, Nelson County will be collecting taxes based on the 2008 tax assessment values. Tax Rate What will happen with the tax rate? If the county had accepted the 2012 tax assessment, with lower property values, the county may have increased the rate by a proposed $0.23 ($0.78 per $100 of assessed value). The current tax rate is $0.55 per $100 of assessed value. Since the 2008 tax assessments are remaining in place, the rate will not

increase as excessively. However, the need to generate additional funds for the county budget has necessitated an incremental increase. The proposed increase, being voted on in April, is to increase the tax rate by $0.05 bringing the rate to $0.60 per $100 of assessed value. Tax Calculations How will that impact the amount of taxes paid? Here is how to calculate the tax amount. Sample calculation for a property assessed at 250,000 in 2008 with the current tax rate and the proposed tax rate: At the current tax rate of $0.55: Divide 250,000 by 100 and multiply that figure by $0.55 = $1,375 of taxes due annually. At the proposed tax rate of $0.60: Divide 250,000 by 100 and multiply that figure by $0.60 = $1,500 of taxes due annually. If the proposed tax rate increase is passed, this will result in an increase of taxes paid of $125 per year. FYI - Just for fun: I was curious

how the tax rate could affect my personal bottom line. Utilizing the 2008 tax assessment and the current $0.55 tax rate, I have been paying $1,842 per year in real estate taxes for my primary residence. Keeping the same 2008 tax assessment value with the proposed rate change ($0.60), I will now be paying $168 more per year. (*with the 2012 tax assessment value and proposed rate ($0.78), I would have paid $92 more per year.) Questions? Contact the Commissioner of Revenue office at 434-2637070. No one likes paying taxes. However, we should all be pleased that we live in a county that is willing to hear and address our concerns! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

‘Lay-Down’ Cypress Just like any other new, untested plant in the market, the crowd goes crazy until we finally see what a Leyland Cypress is all about – an insect trap and a kite (as they blow over due to shallow roots). I fail to see the value in a tree that is installed and has perennial issues regarding wind and insects – especially the dreaded ‘bag worm’. Yes, they grow quickly and thus produce a hedge in as little time as just about any other plant. Problem is that not everyone has the ‘life expectancy’ to plant a Leyland, water it, fertilize it, watch it grow, watch it fall over (after being consumed by bag worms), <repeat>, <repeat>, etc. A number of other evergreens have been introduced to the marketplace that I feel are worthy of taking over the ‘crown’ of hedges. One of my favorite trees for producing a hedge is the Cryptomeria japonica ‘Radicans’ (or the Japanese Cryptomeria). Growing to a height of 20-25 feet with a spread of 10 feet, Radicans is a beautiful specimen and/or hedge due to its interesting ‘fingerlike’ needles and exfoliating bark (resembling a native cedar tree). They tend to do best on the eastern side of houses where they hold their deep green color year round. Not to worry though, as they can also take the western side of a residence showing only a bronzing cast in heavy wind during the winter. With no real issues with insects or deer, I find this one to be an excellent choice in many situations. Thuja have been in the market for quite some time. However, Green Giant (Thuja standishii x plicata – just in case you were wondering!) and its sister Steeplechase are relatively new to the market.

Both have deep green foliage that is almost one dimensional or flat-like in appearance. While Green Giant becomes quite large, 35+ feet by 15 feet wide, Steeplechase is a bit shorter and a bit narrower. Both seem to handle wind nicely and have no real issues with insects (to my knowledge). They have also shown little interest from deer. Where broad plants are allowed and a wider skirts is acceptable, I find it quite hard to beat a Norway Spruce. Unlike the Blue Spruce that everyone flocks to due to their ‘Carolina Blue’ color (yes, even me), the Norway offers a deep rich green color and flaunts a stately, Christmas tree shape. Growing to over 40 feet in height and 20+ feet in spread, leave plenty of room for this big guy to mature. There are many designs that I have done where a Norway Spruce was used for a Christmas tree just for the aforementioned attributes. All in all, this is definitely one of my blue chips for designs. For a light blue cast that has shown to keep its blue (at least in my landscape), Cupressus arizonica var. glabra ‘Carolina Sapphire or the Carolina Sapphire Cypress has shown a lot of interest for many years now. Growing to around 25 feet in height and around 12-15 feet in spread, this tree looks like a nicely shaped blue cedar with regards to its foliage and its bark. I have seen them planted on both western and eastern exposures and show little issues with both wind and cold. I have not experienced any issues with deer or insects (thus far) and consider this to be a nice alternative for both hedges and specimens. Avoid planting this guy in shade as it will quickly lose its color and remain mostly green.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have just been diagnosed with macular degeneration, but I don’t understand what this means for me. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. It affects the macula – the part of the eye that provides sharp central vision needed for driving, recognizing faces, reading, etc. The vision loss may come slowly in some people and more quickly in others. Despite the loss of central vision, people with AMD do keep their peripheral vision. People who smoke are twice as likely to suffer from AMD as those who do not smoke. It is also more common in Caucasians and those with a family history of macular degeneration. Early stages of AMD often have no symptoms and are generally found during routine eye exams. In dry AMD (90% of cases) the light sensitive cells break down gradually blurring the central vision in the affected eye. In wet AMD abnormal blood vessels in the eye grow under the macula. These blood vessels may leak and cause swelling and damage to the macula. Straight lines may

appear wavy, or there may be central vision loss. Over time, dry AMD can develop into wet AMD. Treatment for wet AMD may involve injections to prevent the growth of new blood vessels. If dry AMD progresses, then certain specific high dose supplements containing antioxidants, zinc and copper may be recommended to slow the progress. Do not start these supplements unless recommended by your doctor. Having AMD and vision loss can have a profound effect on your life and coping with this can be difficult. You should engage your family and friends for emotional support. Counseling may be needed to cope with the emotional difficulties. Depression may develop and need to be treated. Support groups are available. Be sure to get regular eye exams and report any vision changes to your doctor immediately. Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Lighten the Load Many individuals wish to keep increasing the weights during strength training. It seems to make sense: to strengthen a muscle, keep increasing the load. Bench press as much as you can. There is truth to that training method. And folks feel as if they have accomplished more if they add more weight. However, with all populations, more weight is not necessarily better for you. There is an immense amount of knowledge known about how the body ages; from joints to muscles to discs. The more we can protect these tissues as we age the less chance of self induced injuries. A common and frequent training correction, we make with the fitness members who are strength training is to lighten the weights. Why? There is a tendency for individuals to speed through the exercises relying on momentum to “power” through the exercise. In the process, technique falters, different muscles are being relied upon and the effect of strengthening is lost. It is so important to focus on tech-

nique. Proper technique enables the desired muscle to be recruited and helps promote alignment and posture which are important for diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis. In addition, focusing on your technique prevents joint and muscle injuries. Too much weight may recruit other muscles improperly. The mind requests that you lift the weight and the body is going to find any way it can to complete the mission. The amount of weight to lift is the amount that you can lift with proper technique. Repeat that SLOWLY WITH PROPER TECHNIQUE as many times as you can. It may be 8 repetitions, 10 repetitions or 15 repetitions. REST. Resting of the muscle can be achieved by switching to another exercise or just resting for 30 seconds for that muscle recovery. Then repeat the set 2-3 times. Lowering the weights slowly during your exercise (perhaps to a count of four) strengthens the muscles eccentrically (the muscle fibers lengthen) which helps with power. Give the muscles two days rest between workouts. So

At press time, NCL Worldwide Headquarters in Greenfield received a ransom note from a gang of bears claiming to have kidnapped Nelly May, the Nelson Farmers’ Market mascot. Be vigilant. And pass the ketchup.

We have taken the cow you call “Nelly May” to protest the failure of recognizing bears in the area. Bears were in the valley long before cows ever were. Yet they are the ones getting all the attention at the market and in the news, and what are they even good for? How many cow role models do you see in the U.S.? One. That darn Chick-Fil-A cow. And he can’t even spell. Now think of all the bears. There’s Smokey, Yogi, Winnie, Paddington, and even the Bernstein Bears. All teaching valuable life lessons. We want equal rights and equal media attention. We are the high profile celebrities in these parts. Our infrequent appearances are much more exciting than any old cow . Our stipulations are as follows: We want bird feeders back – Why punish the birds with malnourishment? They never did anything to you. No more locks on the dumpsters – You don’t see cow proof dumpsters anywhere, do you? We want “Bear Crossing” signs posted – Everyone always thinks about the deer, but what about us? Don’t we deserve the right to cross the road safely? Take down the “Do not feed the bear” signs – Why single us out like that? Do you think we don’t see what’s going on? Just because smell is our principle sense doesn’t mean we can’t see and read the signs you post about us. Give us what we’re asking for and only then will you see your precious Nelly May again. Signed, The Bear Brigade

A few years ago, Bill Sykes came out of a peaceful retirement to become an education docent for the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Day in and day out, Bill works with Education Animals (or, as he likes to call them, Wildlife Ambassadors) to help educate the people – mostly children – of central Virginia of everything that Wildlife has to offer. Little did he know seven years ago that he’d be taking wild, but non-releasable, birds out into wine country to get some grown-ups involved. “Programs that we do for children in schools and in libraries are requested by the organizations because they know what the Wildlife Center does and know that education is an important part of our mission,” said Bill. “But when I go to a winery or Basic Necessities, many of the people that are there don’t know anything about what we do. In this way, we reach people who just don’t know anything about us,

so they learn about this wonderful local nonprofit that’s right around the corner from where they’re spending an afternoon.” Wings Over Wine Country started last fall and has expanded this spring to include Birds Over the Brewpub. Most of the events consist of Bill and some of his bird friends visiting a winery or a brewery and chatting with locals, but one upcoming event (Birds Over the Bistro) at Basic Necessities will be a bit more involved. “I think Basic Necessities has a bit of a reputation [as animal lovers] as we’re always taking donations for the SPCA – this was just a natural fit,” said Basic Necessities’ Sarah Shelton, who is organizing the event in the restaurant’s new back yard. As a specific fundraiser for the Wildlife Center, this June 2 event will feature wine tasting, hors d’ouevres and, of course, Bill and the birds. NCL

bark buckets

STORY by JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

After spending the winter season working in Charlottesville, the warmer weather is calling, and Rachel Williamson is ready to get dirty at

Fairweather Farm.

“I guess I wanted to figure out a way I could work outside and work for myself,” said the young entrepreneur of Fairweather Farm. “I really love being in the woods and making things with my hands. I’ve always done different crafts because I feel that I need to; I compulsively need to make things.” Seven years ago down in North Carolina, a friend taught Rachel how to make baskets – or buckets – out of tree bark. These days, the Tulip Poplar Baskets are Rachel’s best seller – which is lucky, because she loves making them. “I really like the Tulip Poplar baskets because Tulip Poplar is so prolific around here and it’s a resource I feel really good about harvesting,” she said. “And it has a lot of character; each basket is going to be really different.

Rachel went to just two craft shows last year, but this year she’s planning to expand to do six to ten. In expanding her business, she’s gone from taking bark from the trees herself, to getting some from Darrell Campbell Sons Logging, a company she says will be an integral part of what’s going to make her business a success this year. But she does still have her table in the woods where she can make the baskets under the trees. In addition to the baskets, Rachel makes and sells teas and culinary herbs that she sells at the Charlottesville Holiday Market. They are also available closer to home at Greenwood Gourmet. “I just fell in love with it,” said Rachel, who now sells her products online at www.fairweatherfarmers.com. “I’ve sent them to France and California and all over the country; that’s kind of neat feeling a little bit of Nelson all over the place, as well as providing tea that’s local to locals. That’s really fun to share with people – I like making people happy.” Between the baskets, the teas, and the spices, Rachel feels like she fills a part of Nelson’s local market that hasn’t been filled before. “I’ve grown vegetables commercially and it seemed like there were plenty of people doing that,” she said. “But I didn’t see anyone doing the culinary herbs and teas – no one else was filling that niche.” NCL
