care of patients. NCAP Joins NC Stakeholder Group on Menthol & Flavored Tobacco Ban NCAP signed on with 14 other organizations to ask the FDA to grant the Citizen Petition, that was filed over seven years ago, which called on the FDA to prohibit menthol as flavor in cigarettes. In the NC multistakeholder letter, organized by the North Carolina Alliance for Health, we pointed to evidence which demonstrates menthol makes it easier for young people to start smoking, and that menthol contributes to health disparities. In the 1950’s, less than 10% of Black Americans who smoked used menthol cigarettes. Today, 85% of all Black smokers use menthol cigarettes compared to just 29% of White smokers. Wingate Leading the Pack in Opioid Outreach Campaigns NCAP extends its congratulations to our Wingate team of pharmacy students participating in the Opioid Stewardship Training. They led the pack this month, hosting outreach campaigns and earning their certificates of completion in this high-demand scope of practice. Outreach Campaigns spanned a variety of topics ranging from appropriate medication disposal, fentanyl use
evaluation, updates on the treatment of substance use disorder, hosting of drug take-back events in local pharmacies to an evaluation of highschool students’ knowledge on the appropriate use of opioids and the legal and health risks associated with misuse. Kudos to all of you for your creativity and commitment to public service. If you know or see any of these students in the hallway, reach out and give them a big pat on the back for a job well done! Our shining stars this month were Brooke Ballenger, Allyson Barnett, Tyler Boyd, Lora Holloman, Nam Le, Savannah Racketa, and Gabrielle Troxler. REMEMBER! If you are enrolled in the Student Pharmacists Opioid Stewardship Certificate training and are looking for an outreach project, NCAP is still actively recruiting students to provide Harm Reduction education to independent community pharmacies across the state. We have everything you will need to carry out the project. If interested, please email cheryl@ncpharmacists. org.
