January Presidents Message – Kevallyn Paskos

2013

Dear NCPP, Happy Holidays to you and your families during this magical time of year. May your seasons be filled with family, friends, laughter and perfect lighting. This is also a great time to assess our lives, set personal with professional goals and reach for the stars. May your new year bring much health, happiness and renewed inspiration! November Vendor Night – WOW! We had an amazing evening filled with lots of new guests, new members and the awesome support of our preferred vendors. The evening was a hit with a special thanks going out to the NCPP Board Members who put in many hours of planning to coordinate it all. Hats off to Ann Gordon – Vendor Liaison, Mark Gebhardt and Bill Baker – Registration, Malcolm Slight – People’s Choice Print Competition, Lily Dong – Event Photographer, Michael Malerba – Sound Technician and Wayne Miller/Denny Weigand/Tod Gomes and Tom O’Connor for Event Marketing. Thank you to Bay Photo, Camera West, The Looking Glass, The Art of Picture Framing, Smug Mug, PPC, West Coast School of Photography, Lens Baby, Collages.net, Shelly Waldman, Hoodman, Concept Marketing, Sara Dean Makeup Artist, Info Gate, Fairies and Feathers Tutus and our very own Master Photographer Lisa Evans. Michael Malerba and Wayne Miller shared their much anticipated photography and lighting techniques with our many guests throughout the evening. We also had beautiful models on hand who shared their smiles and talents. Franci Lucero was a great asset to the team in assisting with posing of models. People’s Choice Print Competition – This was a special night to judge the various print submissions. The votes were submitted by NCPP with a secret ballot voting system. The competition included very creative prints but the final congratulations go to…1st Place – Kevallyn Paskos: “Lost”, 2nd Place – Malcolm Slight “Golden Gate Bridge” and 3rd Place – Denny Weigand “Zabriskie Point.” Awesome job to these photographic artists who submitted these images! NCPP/PPGBA End of Year Print Competition is just around the corner. This is always an exciting collaboration and we look forward to this special event. NCPP’s Board Member Team – We would like to congratulate NCPP on another successful year of doing business as a non-profit organization! With the success of Vendor Night and a new, monthly meeting location secured under our belt, we look forward to a prosperous and exciting 2013. The Board Members are doing a great job and eager to continue our momentum and synergy. We have new members to introduce and very talented guest speakers lined up so stay tuned for updates. Thank you NCPP members for your continued support! Sincerely, Kevallyn “You get what you expect.” Ann Gordon NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists. 4

NCPP Proudly Presents Shelly Waldman on January 10, 2013 Running and Growing Your Photography Business by the Numbers Shelly Waldman launched Business Juice, a small business consulting company focused on helping creatives understand business concepts and applying that understanding to their own small business. Shelly has an undergraduate degree in Business Economics from UC Santa Barbara; she has managed large budgets for university programs and has worked for one of the largest financial institutions in the country analyzing budgets. Today, in addition to Business Juice, Shelly continues to run Waldman Photography while still working in the financial industry and studying for her credential as a CFP (Certified Financial Planner).

Since January is the beginning of a new year, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on last year's performance. Shelly will discuss how to look at last year's numbers to forecast for 2013 and lead a panel discussion with fellow photographers about their struggles in running a business. Further, she has invited an accountant and a lawyer to talk about tax and law issues associated with growing a business and what needs to be in place when you hire your first employee. Shelly enjoys helping people succeed. Through Business Juice, she is able to provide one on one consulting to photographers, helping each business owner understand the foundational, financial and marketing concepts that will allow them to be successful at their craft and their business.

“Lost” by Kevallyn Paskos This was a planned “vision” portrait session that began with two sisters! Haley, the 7 year old model, was enjoying the experience while her little sister was doing everything possible to be a complete distraction (e.g. standing between photographer and subject while throwing branches)! I was fortunate to have a lovely, historical bridge background, sweet afternoon light and a cute kid willing to listen to posing instructions even with distractions. The architecture of the bridge and fall colored foliage, created a nice place to compose this leading lines image. My original goal was to do a classic, semismiling girl portrait but also wanted to create more thought by having the subject not smile and look…lost with her Teddy Bear friend. While editing in Lightroom, the more serious image stood out. In Photoshop, I did basic editing, applied an antique paper texture to the bridge architecture, softened skin, sharpened hair and cloned in more leaves near bottom of image. I hope to create a series of images in which a delicate subject is in an unfamiliar or contrasting environment. Stay tuned! Shot with Canon MK II, Canon fixed 85 mm 1.8, ISO – 200, F-stop 2.2, 1/200 , 580 EXII off camera left, Manual mode at 1/16 power, white umbrella used for fill, 2 pocket wizards.

This image was taken from the parking lot at the North end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Space Shuttle flew over Alcatraz and came straight toward the GG Bridge. Bad lighting, I was shooting toward the sun.

3nd place: “Zabriskie Point by: Denny Weigand

"The image is of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. I took ten vertical bracketed shots of this 270 degree view. I processed each image in HDR with the same tonal values, and then combined the resultant images into a panoramic image in Photoshop. A lot of work for one image, but it was, in my opinion, worth the effort!" Denny

NCPP Proudly Presents February TBD, 2013 – Jennifer Bagwell

“Boost Your Business on a Budget” Jennifer Bagwell has been a wedding photographer for 5 short years and with each year she has grown her business. In 2012 she shot 35 weddings as the primary photographer, which was 13 more than she did in 2011. She attributes her success to savvy marketing and building a brand based on happy clients, happy guests, and a social media frenzy. Jennifer will discuss the things that she tried along the way that worked and what didn't and how to make marketing investments with a great return. Learn how to create a brand that is talked about, celebrated and yields a fully booked schedule today and future clients for tomorrow. Petaluma based photographer Jennifer Bagwell has used her retail experience to get a leg-up in the photography industry. At Best Buy she worked on a special board that worked hand in hand with the Gallup Organization where they studied the psyches of different customers and their shopping habits along with studying work staff personalities and how to better utilize them to service customers. She was also the head of PR for Best Buy in San Francisco and handled all of their media relations while managing the SF store. Jennifer is a proud stay-at-home mom of two adorable children as well as a full-time photographer.
