April Presidents Message – Kevallyn Paskos
2013
Dear NCPP, Spring is in the air and so excited for this special time of year. This is my favorite season and things just feel so fresh and clean! Everywhere you look there are gorgeous trees, flowers and other pretty landscapes. Hope you are also enjoying this nice weather as we all embark on our busy season! Happy shooting. March Guest Speakers – Scot and Sharon Benton – Studio B This amazing couple believes that lighting and posing go together. Can’t have one without the other. Benton Photography showed us basic posing and to focus on the details that define professional photographers. This amazing duo does this with synchronicity, teamwork and a successful business. Scot’s strength is lighting while Sharon’s is posing. They showed how this team works together to create the images that Studio B is known for. Studio B’s presentation was incredibly fun and upbeat. This was a very inspiring and motivating evening and got the crowd going! Print Competition – We had a great variety of competition entries and the lineup was awesome. The final congratulations goes to…1st Place – Wayne Miller “Sky Pilot“ and 2nd Place – Malcolm Slight “Lemonade for Anyone”. Great job to these artists! Make sure to get ready for next month’s print competition and surprise raffle prize. PPC Judging Academy – April 30, 2013 presented by Tim Mathiesen, M.Photog.Cr. F-ASP, PPA National Jury Chairman. Tim Mathiesen has put together a workshop for prospective jurors so that we can raise the quality of all competitions around the state. The details of this class are: An all day workshop on the judging process, based on the PPA judging system and a place on the PPC qualified judging list. This workshop is very intense and involves hands on judging and discussion of the many aspects of judging. We are looking forward to planning this event! Please visit our NCPP website for more information. Tim Meyer – Lighting Styling Workshop – Sunday May 19, 2013 presented by Tim Meyer. NCPP would like to invite you to join us for a day full of lighting techniques and posing. Tim will illustrate how your choice of light shaping tools, metering, ratios, facial analysis and posing all work together to produce consistently high quality images. This class will be about light styling - using light to shape and make statements about style - and will provide the opportunity for you to develop a professional level of portrait lighting skills. The material will be geared toward introductory to intermediate skill levels, but will provide a review of fundamentals that even seasoned photographers may find beneficial. Although, taught in a studio environment, this class will be valuable to photographers who work in studio and with natural light. Sincerely, Kevallyn “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” Joseph Chilton Pearce
NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. 2013
PPC Judging Academy 30 APRIL 2013 Tim Mathiesen, M.Photog.Cr. F-ASP PPA National Jury Chairman
Photographic print judging is a very enlightening and challenging process. It takes courage and confidence to begin the process. Most photographers want to learn about judging to improve their own photographs and learn to be objective when it comes to commenting and judging other images. Over the last 2 years, there have been more changes in our judging process than in the last 3 decades. With the addition of digital files, the process of evaluating images has risen to a higher level. Learning to evaluate what is now called Electronic Imaging causes more concern and confusion. This workshop will be an extensive, all-day event. We will cover all aspects of the judging process, including terminology, scoring, ideology, digital vs. print, presentation, and conduct. We want members who are passionate about image competition and who want to improve their photography and learn the judging process. PPC is preparing a list of qualified jurors which will be given to each of the PPC affiliates. To be included on this list it will be necessary to complete a judging workshop and pass the evaluation at the completion of the workshop. This seminar is limited to 15 participants. Cost – PPC Members $49, non-PPC members $79 9 am – 5 pm James Brian Studio 1727 Bonanza St Walnut Creek, CA 94596 To sign up: http://www.ppconline.com/image-judging-academy/

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point.
2013
1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: · Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). · Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: · PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg · Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: · Fee: Cost per each image is $5.00 by Tuesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. · Images: E-mail images as an attachment, not imbedded, to lilydong888@gmail.com Limit of 30 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Comp Chair on a month by month basis. The Print Comp Chair may also limit the number of entries to 1 image per photographer if there are more than 30 images entered. · Late entries: Email entries and fees submitted after Tuesday Midnight or (Walk-ins accepted on zip drive) at the door, $10 fee per each image, with a deadline of 6:50pm the night of the meeting. · Incorrect entries: The photographer will be notified via email if their entry is not to specification. If the image is not returned correctly it cannot be entered.

“Sky Pilot” by Wayne Miller The image “Sky Pilot” was created with several images for the electronic imaging category. The main subject, Thomas, was captured at a shoot we did on Mare Island and I extracted him from the background. The smaller planes were captured from the Auburn Air Show “Thunder in the sky”, several years ago and the larger WWII plane was captured from the Half Moon Bay “Dream Machine Show”. All the planes were extracted in Photoshop. These images were then brought into Photoshop as individual layers and set at different opacities for the effect. The smoke effect is from brushes that I made by shooting smoke trails from burning incense and a small strobe. Each smoke brush was sized and rotated with a different color and opacity effect, (each is on its own layer.) The grid was a texture mosaic tile also made into a brush. The lighting effect was another brush I made using images of cracks in concrete and lines that I skewed in Photoshop with the Warp tool. The above brushes were made over several years of trial and error. I never know when one or more brushes will add to the effect that I want in an image. The process starts with the main subject and then I bring in other elements until I reach the final image that I like. The whole process sometimes takes several hours over a few weeks, starting and stopping while waiting for inspiration. Wayne

Heads Up Veterans! and Thank You PPC by Ann Gordon
Heads Up Veterans; and Thank You PPC I know there aren’t many of us veterans out here in the world of professional photographers, but I’m very sure I’m not alone. I’m a Vietnam Era Naval Officer and I got my first “real” camera during my first tour. There have been several wars and actions since and even peacetime veterans will find this information valuable. Several years ago our affiliate president came back from the quarterly PPC affiliate meeting with information on the California Business Code to share with the veterans, if any, in NCPP. A little nugget for sure, but for me worth over a thousand dollars thus far. As a veteran I do not have to pay for my business license anywhere here in California! This section of the California Business Code was written in 1941 for the vets returning from WWII and last modified on 22 February 2013. So it is current, relevant, and valuable for those of us who can still find our DD214s. Anyone wanting more information on all the value of that piece of paper is welcome to contact me at: Email: ann@gordonpetphotography.com Phone: 510-222-4115 So here it is: California Business and Profession Code Section 16100-16105 16102. Every soldier, sailor or marine of the United States who has received an honorable discharge or a release from active duty under honorable conditions from such service may hawk, peddle and vend any goods, wares or merchandise owned by him, except spirituous, malt, vinous or other intoxicating liquor, without payment of any license, tax or fee whatsoever, whether municipal, county or State, and the board of supervisors shall issue to such soldier, sailor or marine, without cost, a license therefor. Are you paying for a license that is due you for free?

Why Be Certified? Being a successful professional photographer takes more than a camera. A Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation will help you: • • •
Show the industry and potential clients that you have the knowledge and the talent to back up your business. Let clients know you mean business and that your knowledge and skills are cutting edge…before they meet you. Earn prestige, more clients, and simply put…more money for your business.
If you are interested in raising the bar and become a CPP Certified Professional Photographer: • Let's start a study group. The recommended book London, Stone & Upton. Photography. 2011 (10th edition) has eighteen chapters. • Read a chapter or two a week and have a Q&A each week. • We can meet at a specific location or better yet meet once a week for an hour on Goggle + Hangout (its free and you can save time) • Upcoming examination in the Bay Area in June or July. We can have one in SF area if enough are interested. CONTACT me to sign up or more information: Wayne Miller, Cr. Photog., CPP Certification Liaison Professional Photographic Certification Commission 2010, 2011, 2012and 2013 email:; wm@wmphotos.com or 925-330-8737 WHY WAIT??? Your education and Certification is your key to future success!
