nother year passed? As I write this message in early November, I start thinking back to the past year and forward to the next couple months. In the rear view mirror, I look at the changes and hurdles NCSG has made. Up ahead, I see several exciting new opportunities. At the beginning of this year, we sought ways to improve communications with members, board members and staff. Having proper communications on a routine basis should be a standard operating procedure for all businesses and companies. NCSG added an automated phone communication from Directors four times this year. I hope this has been well-received and has helped you feel more engaged with your organization. During my travels to industry events this year, I only heard positive comments in regard to the “robo calls”. Don’t worry, we do not plan to increase frequency of these calls, as we are aware that many people already receive many of these type calls (especially during campaign season). In regards to communications with board members and staff, milestones are set from time to time to ensure everyone is given a certain time period to complete their task. Earlier this year, building off of work that began about eighteen months ago, the CSIA and NCSG boards established a long-term lease agreement. I believe that this agreement will go far to help keep the bond between the two organizations strong. The two organizations complement each other, and with proper governance and leadership this mutually-beneficial relationship will last for many years to come. During our May 2010 annual planning meeting, we approved the funds to have these professional Public Service Announcements created as a tool for members to use in their areas to help promote the industry to the public. How much does it cost you? Just a little time to call your local radio station and send an email of the PSA link to the proper representative. It is my understanding that radio and TV stations are required by law to run a certain amount of PSAs. It doesn’t mean they have to run NCSG’s – but they just might. Help spread the word to the strong ethics and professional accountability of the Guild. We also took last year’s radio Public Service Announcements to the next level by adding the first video component. You may have seen it on Facebook or the NCSG web site recently. Right now, we’re working on a plan to
hopefully have this video go live on a national level with ABC and possibly other major networks later this season. Can you imagine, sitting down after a long day to watch some TV and see a Public Service Announcement for the NCSG? For many years, I have hoped to see some sort of national coverage. Perhaps very soon we may get some. If you have a Facebook page, I encourage you to share this video with your fans and help spread the message to increase awareness of our trade. In November, the NCSG board of directors met via phone conference and GoToMeeting. This type of meeting, when planned well in advance, has its place and provides the ability for the board to keep engaged, and enables progression of our goals without the travel expense involved holding board meetings at headquarters. While it does have its place, nothing compares to a face-to- face meeting with directors from all over the nation. I feel we have a diverse group of directors on the current board of directors and everyone has done their due diligence this past year. For this year’s board of directors’ election, two nominees from Region 4 have emerged from the depths of a chimney. One

candidate is from Missouri and the other is from Ohio. Good luck to both candidates and thank you for stepping up to the plate for your industry. With only a few weeks left in this calendar year, I want to reflect on something I recently became more aware of and thought would be good to share here. One of my friends drew my attention to the fact that while technology does make work more efficient and speeds up the processes of needed task, it also can take over your life (time snatcher) and you can find yourself with no paying attention to the more important things in life. A colleague of mine, that’s also in my MIX group family, recently wrote a quote: “Work like you’ll die tomorrow and live like you’ll die today”. That hit home for me and, for a short while, I was able to reflect on the essence of that quote without distraction. But our minds don’t stay focused on these type important ideals for very long when work is involved. I have been guilty at times with a lack of patience and I suspect that many of you have too, especially during this season. Think about it. Have you ever turned all of your electronics off and pondered that idea? The question is one of irony. The reason many of us have never pondered the idea, is many of us are reluctant to turn everything off, and that’s because we are so impatient. I can see that technology, while it allows us to be more efficient, can get in the way of our everyday lives if we don’t get out that lasso and pull back a little once in a while. Here are a few options my friend mentioned that really hit home with me:

• Invite a friend to an “untethered lunch” – no cell phones, no tablets, no TVs. Be sure to give them full attention and listen. • Schedule 30 minutes totally free of distraction. (My favorite spot is at day break sitting in the woods, watching the sun come up and the wildlife waking up. Other favorites are sitting at the end of a dock, sitting and watching a camp fire, or looking up at the stars on a clear night. Man what a stress reliever.) • Give yourself technology boundaries. For example, no technology before 8:00 AM, or on your lunch break, or after 9:30 PM, whatever. We’ve become slaves to the “urgent” and technology often makes us aware of the “urgent” needs. The email can wait. You can re-tweet tomorrow. • Pick up a book and keep it on your person. When you get stuck in a waiting room or your ride is late, read your book instead of answering Facebook messages or commenting on pictures. As we move forward to the end of the year, let’s plan to spend more time with family and friends during the holidays and remember to take those breaks away from the “urgencies” of work. I plan to work on my patience and dedicate some parameters to better reflect some healthy time management. And finally, similar to my colleague’s quote, I like to share one of my favorites: “Live like there’s no tomorrow, and die knowing you’ll live forever.” I look forward to seeing you in Orlando! Lloyd Green, Heat-Fab Founder, Passes Lloyd Green, industry icon and founder of Heat-Fab in Turner Falls, MA died May 7, 2011 at his home in Spofford, NH after a sixteen year battle with Multiple Myleoma. His obituary in the Brattleboro, VT Reformer reads, “Lloyd was most proud of the Franklin County area jobs and opportunities he created. Heat -Fab employed 120 at its sale (to Selkirk Corp.) in 2006. It continues to operate in the Turners Falls Industrial Park. I am considering installing hearth appliances. What do I need to do to get my business to this next level?
A
First and foremost, as with any new business venture, make sure you have the proper qualifications and credentials such as licensing, insurance coverage, available certifications, etc. If you do not currently sell hearth appliances then I would suggest building a relationship with a local hearth retailer. Research each appliance that you could potentially install and make sure you have the proper tools and equipment for the job. A stove lift, hand trucks and dollies among other items may be crucial additions to your lot of
equipment. One who is considering professionally installing hearth appliances will also need a basic knowledge of residential construction because mistakes can easily be made and could become costly. Upon arrival at a customer’s residence, remember everything is relevant when it comes to installing hearth appliances. Consider the roof type and pitch. Are there rain or heavy winds in the forecast? Is there a paved driveway and or concrete walkway where the appliance could be easily rolled to the customer’s porch? Is their lawn sloping on a hillside? How many steps are leading up to the entry way and is the porch or deck in good structural condition so that it can support you and a couple of your employees, your stove lift and the appliance? Is the doorway large enough to get the appliance through or should you choose another path? When inside the home, careful consideration must be made to where in the home the perspective appliance is to be installed. A proper pathway must be planned before bringing the appliance through, wood floors need special attention because they can be easily scratched or damaged. Now for the hearth planning, it is very important to plan out the hearth placement as well as the placement of the appliance; masking tape is a great tool for making templates on the floor and wall. At this point you must also consider floor protection, protection of the furniture in the room and the capturing of drywall dust by a plastic sheeting wall. Additional things to consider, are things like making sure the new installation meets the EPA requirements for lead paint contamination. Of course the age of the home will determine whether this step is necessary. You also need to keep your safety and that of your employees in mind. Other safety concerns would be proper roof safety with safety ropes etc., making sure your employees lift heavy objects in the correct fashion with proper back support. Because of the weight of most hearth appliances, wearing steel toed boots is a good idea. After the installation, double-check that all proper clearances are met. Going over the operation and maintenance procedures with the homeowner makes your customers more confident in their purchase and can result in their repeat business or their recommendation of you to their friends and neighbors.

Winter Weather Is Here but So Are Customer Expectations
I
have noticed in the last few years that customer expectations continue to rise as a result of the temperatures going down. It may just be the changing of the times, but whatever the reason it seems that people’s patience is wearing thin and the amount of common courtesy and respect has been greatly reduced across the board. In my company, we have always treated people with respect and common courtesy such as saying “yes ma’am” and “yes, sir” and have made a point to be professional and polite. Some people have taken our kindness and misconstrued it as weakness as if we should cave in to their persistent and aggressive manner. This may sound like a psychological assessment of the business and it is. We must try to understand their mindset.
Many things have changed in the recent years; number one being the declining economy and then there is the rise in the cost of living with higher utility rates. With a large percentage of the public being out of work, one can understand the pressure that many people are under. Some are in a position where they are forced to go back to using wood as their primary heat source and have realized they have existing problems with their wood heating system. A lot of folks think that if they ring our phones today, we will be on their doorstep tomorrow and will fix every issue with their system immediately and inexpensively. And others? Well… All I can say is that as smoke goes up the chimney; common sense seems to go out the window!
I don’t know about other companies, but for us what seems to work best with this type of customer is to, of course, always be polite, be confident, consistent and knowledgeable. We also make a point to stand firm and let them know who we

are, what we do, the cost of our services offered and what time frame we should arrive. When on the phone with customers, the conversation can easily change from their chimney problems to their personal problems but, by sticking to the script and not getting into a lengthy conversation, we have found that it forces them to conform to “our” mindset that we are a professional company operating within a certain parameter. Let your customers know, in a kind manner, the services that you offer. At times they may not be equal to what the customer expects, but finding out during the customer’s initial inquiry is much better than finding out after you have already arrived at the job site. When arriving at the job site, the technicians should stick to the script as well and stay on topic, performing the services in a professional, timely fashion, conveying their findings to the customer while being blunt, yet polite, and following up with a written report checked twice for accuracy with photos when necessary.
We strive for all communications with the customer to be fully understood. It is unfortunate when the customers have problems with their chimney systems whether it is damage in need of repair or an improper construction or installation. But in order to keep our sanity during the busy season, we must remember it is their problem and we cannot let them make it ours. As professionals, we are in the business to offer them the correct and safe remedy at a fair price. Then it is up to them to decide if our recommendation is the solution they desire.

Questions to Help You Defeat CHAOS in 2012 As you read this, it is December 2011 and it’s time for a review of 2011. Without a review of the present year, how do we make 2012 what we want to it to be? As this year draws to a close, it becomes time for us to look at how we plan to grow and prosper in 2012. It is of paramount importance that we look at things that did not meet our expectations in 2011 along with our success stories of the year. Proper planning means the diagnosis of each and how they got that way. One thing I often discuss with clients is the basis of why they are in business for themselves and what their goals were when they entered the business world as an owner. The line of questions will commonly be asked as follows: What was your reason for starting your own business? Why did you make this life altering decision? Was it to be your own boss? Was it to make more money? Was it to give you more freedom? Was it to allow you to pursue your personal goals in life? And did the business deliver to you the goals you started it for? In other words does the business today meet and in fact exceed the expectations you had the day you formed it and has it brought you the benefits you envisioned? If the above paragraph makes you think and ponder, that is good. Take a few minutes and answer the following twelve questions as a part of your year-end summary of your business and personal life: 1. What do you consider your greatest success in 2011? 2. What was your biggest disappointment? 3. What worries you most about your business right now? 4. If the Business Genie granted you three wishes about your business, what would those wishes be? 5. Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed? 6. Do you feel joy in running your business? 7. Do you feel joy in your home/personal life? 8. Are you making the money you need to live the life that you want?

9. Are your personal relationships better or worse than one year ago? 10. What would a perfect day look like to you? 11. What’s keeping you from having that perfect day? 12. What’s the most important thing you want to work on in 2012? Armed with this information, start planning for 2012 and beyond. As you sit in the same position one year from now, take out these notes. Do this as a part of your own long range planning for yourself and your business. File these each year and then use them the next year as a benchmark of your accomplishments and what areas just did not measure up. Realize when there are losses, either make needed changes or cut the losses, never ever just ride a dead horse! One thing is for certain, if we do not work on our weaknesses, we cannot convert these into strengths. One of the things I discuss often in my daily business tips on my Chimney & Venting Consultants’ Facebook page is CHAOS and how this criminal robs us of our emotional well-being, our time and our profits. But just like any enemy, CHAOS can be combatted and it can be overcome. As a successful business owner, you must make the decision to be the LION in your market. Now being the LION does not mean you have the biggest company, nor does it mean that you gross the most, nor does it mean you have the most employees. What it means is you are the go-to guy, you are the guy everybody wants, you are the guy that is the most valued and you actually have the privilege of choosing who your clients with be. The number one thing about being the LION is that this position will allow you to meet your needs and exceed your own expectations. Lastly, being the LION allows you the freedom that is associated with being the owner of a business within the free enterprise system that our country was founded upon!
One way for you to become the LION in your market is to decide who your role model in business is. Who, in your mind, is successful and who operates the way you truly wants to operate? Who has the business that meets the goals they set out to do, and who always seems to come out on top in the game of life? Once you establish this role model (perhaps this person can even function as a mentor), watch, learn, listen and implement. This may well be your leadin to a fantastic business model in the year of 2013 for your own business efforts. Note I said 2013 because development of the systems and methods is not overnight, but again you got to start! And the successful owner never stops, this where the famous line of Michael Gerber is never truer, you must spend time working ON the business, and not expend all your efforts IN working in the business. Set your 2012 goals to be the LION OF YOUR MARKET! If you need help, it is available to fight off the gremlins, the others that are your enemy and the army of CHAOS! Your efforts in 2012 are going to make 2013 and beyond a piece of cake. But, hey, you got to get started! Is this the day?

Tips to Prevent Illness this Winter The colder winter months are notorious for sniffling noses, deep coughs, achy bodies and fevers. It’s cold and flu season, which means it’s a good time to reduce your exposure to germs and stock up on supplies that will help you escape any illnesses, or at least help you tolerate any symptoms. Preventive care is key to avoiding the traditional winter illnesses of cold and flu. Here are some tips to keep those icky germs at bay: * Hand washing is very important, so stock up on soap and antibacterial cleansers and have them ready by every sink in your house. Also consider using disposable towels to reduce the potential for germs to transfer between family members. * Starting off healthy can help you be strong against invading viruses. You might be in need of extra fortification like fish oil or calcium, so ask your doctor about adding a vitamin regimen to your diet. * Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep can wear down your energy and immune system, leaving you more susceptible to viruses and germs. Make sure you have a comfortable pillow so you don’t wake up sore or spend the night tossing and turning. And if you struggle with letting your brain relax, a white noise machine or fan running on the lowest setting can calm you down. * Keep the house clean. Wash door handles, the phone and even
the handles on your appliances frequently to avoid the transfer of germs. Keep a good supply of sanitizing cleaners on hand to help speed up the cleaning process. * Get the flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone over the age of 6 months gets a flu shot. The nasal spray flu vaccine is also now available for people who qualify. As you’re making a list of all the supplies you’ll need to help prevent your family members from getting sick, make sure you look for discounts and coupon codes online at sites like CouponHeaven.com. Many stores listed on this time and money saving site offer discounts on vitamins, health supplements, cleaning supplies and even pillows, which in the long run can save you a good amount of money. I’ve found it rewarding to become involved in some of the issues facing sweeps and guilds and working the board in various planning capacities.” When asked what personal qualities and skills of value that he brings to the board and the Guild, Mitchell replied, “I feel that some of the qualities I continue to develop are the ability to follow-up with members’ questions and the fact that I enjoy working with people. Kenneth Hoelscher Kenneth Hoelscher is the owner of Abbey Road Chimney Sweeps in Brookville, OH. When asked why he seeks election, Hoelscher replied, “I grew up in this industry. Since I was five I knew I would be a sweep. I am always happy when I am working. Volumes of information has been shared with me by older, knowledgeable sweeps. It is time to give back by continuing this tradition. The National Chimney Sweep Guild wants your photos for our first photo contest, with winners to be announced at the NCSG Innovation 2012 convention in Orlando. There are three categories: Darwin Award: Best of the worst chimney, fireplace or wood stove installation. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something comes up that you just can’t believe. Best Fireplace Face Picture: Submit photos of great work you’ve seen with cultured stone, brick, or other materials. Best Masonry Construction: Submit the best of your own work constructing
chimneys, fireplaces, masonry heaters, etc. – if it has anything to do with fire it is eligible! Judging will be done by a panel of industry experts. There is no charge for entering the contest. Reflecting on the past twelve months I am encouraged by the continued efforts of NCSG to make strides on behalf of our members and the industry at large, and I look forward to what lays ahead in the year ahead.
Hundreds of sweeps came together for top-of-the-line education and unsurpassable coast-to-coast networking. Perhaps the highlight of the event was the culmination of years of incredible industry effort when the CSIA auction officially raised the final funds needed to retire the debt on the CSIA Technology Center. Congratulations and thanks go out to all who played a role in this phenomenal accomplishment.
We hit the ground running last January as NCSG represented the trade appearing before a hearing of the Federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration to articulate the challenges imposed on sweeps across the country by the existing and proposed rules on fall protection and walking work surfaces. This process has been slow at best, but the issuance of an actual set of proposed new rules this past year did show some promise.
NCSG continues to explore new opportunities to increase the value of membership by offering new and revised benefits. Beyond our unparalleled growing coupon program that is the result of the generosity of our diverse supplier members, we have introduced new and revised services this year including full service discounted office supply ordering, IT support and access to trusted and professional business consulting. We’ve even streamlined access to the Guild’s Technical Advisory Council.
We were very well-received in Washington in January and, despite continued slow development by the powers that be, we have reason to believe that our presence and comments had an impact. We are still in a wait-and-see mode with this, but we continue to monitor the discussions and OSHA continues to consider all of the input they have received for potential alteration to their proposed rules. Late winter marked an outstanding gathering of the industry’s best and brightest at NCSG Innovation 2011 in Hartford, CT.
This year we have also been pleased to release a series of radio, and most recently video, public service announcements. These spots have been created to provide you, the member, with a convenient way to share them with your local radio stations for free. The announcements can be used as-is, or they can be customized to include your own company’s contact information. As a public service announcement they are designed to remind the consumer of the need to have their fireplace inspected annually by a professional sweep…and you are that professional. The YouTube video created this past fall has the same public service message and is easy to add to your own website or social media site, and additional videos will be coming soon. If you haven’t been to NCSG’s website to check these announcements out, I encourage you to do so. While some are beginning to see some glimmer of hope in the national economy, NCSG appreciates that the economic challenges continue to have a draining impact on many of our members. We are pleased that we have been able to manage our resources in such a way as to continue offering a competitive level of benefits and member support without instituting a dues increase for the third year in a row. In addition, earlier this fall we introduced a new opportunity to pay your membership dues over the course of the year to help put you in control of your cash flow where your membership is concerned. As I mentioned last month, the insight of our members and the industry at large is important not only to NCSG, but to the ongoing success of the trade. To that end, together with CSIA’s help, we have recently launched the most comprehensive industry-wide survey in the Guild’s history. Every opinion counts, so if you have somehow not received your survey yet, please contact our offices and we will see that you get one right away. Your input will help guide our direction next year and in the years to come.
NCSG cares about the security of our members, and we care about the future vitality of the industry. If sweeps are unsuccessful entrepreneurs, or otherwise endlessly struggle from day to day, that’s not good for the sweeps and it makes it difficult to attract new sweeps to the fold. Our industry is far from saturated. The more individuals we can attract to the trade, the stronger the industry becomes for everyone. This is why part of the guild’s stated mission includes “…advancing the chimney and venting industry through public awareness of the trade.” We hope we can count on your feedback so that you can help us help you. There is no single formula that defines success. There are successful business models in all shapes and sizes, and the Guild represents every extreme and everything in between. Large companies can learn from small companies. Seasoned sweeps can learn from new sweeps. All can be successful in their own right. The end of the calendar year tends to produce a sense of nostalgia in most of us. As you look back at 2011, I hope that, on balance, you have enjoyed your trade. Even more so, I hope that you have learned from your trade. If you have had a successful year, take the time to understand what made it so. Don’t forget to document your processes so they can be duplicated next year. Share your success stories with others – the exercise not only benefits those with whom you are sharing, but it makes you stronger in the process; and that makes for a stronger industry for all of us. If you’ve had some struggles this past year, take the time to understand why so that you can improve next year. The professional resources available to you are virtually endless. Take advantage of educational opportunities that can improve your technical and business skills. Take advantage of networking opportunities through face-to-face meetings and electronic discussions. As you set your calendar for 2012, don’t forget to join NCSG in Orlando in February for the largest gathering of sweeps our industry has to offer. Learn for yourself how others define their success and discover ways to further mold your own. No matter how you celebrate it, I wish you and yours every happiness during the holiday season; and I especially wish you a personally and professionally profitable new year!
