About the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center

left: The bronze sculpture Hannah watches over the Terry Center

The Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center, at 110,000 square feet, is one of the nation’s largest veterinary hospitals and is twice the size of the original Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The heart of the new center remains an outstanding medical community that includes 123+ faculty, 83 house officers (interns and residents), some 115 students, and 179 staff members — all dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of over 20,000 small animal patients yearly, most of them referred by private practice veterinarians. Clinical Services include Cardiology, Dermatology, Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and General Surgery. The hospital is named for the late Randall B. Terry, Jr. of High Point, N.C. Mr. Terry was a businessman and newspaper publisher who dearly loved his Golden Retrievers. When his dog Nike became ill in 1998, Mr. Terry’s veterinarian referred him to the Internal Medicine Service at the NCState Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The compassionate care that Nike received impressed Mr. Terry and led him to become a great friend and supporter of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM),including a term as president of the N.C. Veterinary Medical Foundation (NCVMF). Randall Terry died in May of 2004. The following year, the R.B. Terry Jr. Charitable Foundation provided the CVM with a $20 million pledge to initiate his vision of a veterinary medical center that would be a national model of excellence for compassionate and leading-edge health care for companion animals. A private fund-raising campaign and appropriations from the N.C. General Assembly, along with the Terry gift, made the $72 million medical complex a reality in 2011. Beyond the immediate care for companion animals, the Terry Center and the continued support of the Terry Foundation are helping to develop the Centennial Biomedical Campus by encouraging CVM efforts in biomedical research, bio- and agro-security, food animal health and food safety, ecosystem health, animal welfare, and the critical training of the next generation of skilled veterinarians and veterinary researchers.

Juliet Barrus A native of Kinston, North Carolina, Juliet Barrus received her Bachelors degree in art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She continued in the Fine Arts Program in Art and Design at East Carolina University and later attended the New York School of Design. Over the years she has pursued her study with various artists across the country. Juliet paints in both watercolors and oils, preferring oil paint because of its ability for a bolder application of paint. Her watercolors, which reflect her training in architectural rendering, are mostly color studies for her oil paintings. Her style reflects her years of understudy with Sarah Blakeslee Speight as well as the instruction of Ovanes Berberian, Scott Christensen and Kevin MacPherson.

John R. Havrilla I started painting when I was eight years old, following in the footsteps of my father. Up until 2008 most of all my work consisted of landscapes and seascapes. After painting a portrait of my two Newfoundlands in 2008, and a few other family pets, I decided to switch to painting pet portraits. It has been the most satisfying decision I ever made. A pet portrait touches people’s lives like no other artwork. I work hard to capture the spirit of the pet and work closely with the client to make sure that I meet their expectations. I work in oil on canvas from 16”x20” and up. All Tuxie and Tillie

Richard Hedgecock One thing I’ve learned over the years is that, for the sake of honesty in my art, I should paint from what I have lived. Animals are what I know, and so they have become the focal point in most of my paintings. There are plenty of wildlife artists out there; but my experience with animals has been of those tamed by humans, and once tamed, dependent on them.

Catch Me If You Can

radiates from a painting when it strikes an element of truth, and that beauty is what I am after. I believe I am a storyteller at heart, and the story behind a painting is more important to me than any technical quality like texture, temperature or balance. To me, those things are simply the vocabulary from which I built my narratives.

Cindy Boney Reddish Life and family have kept me busy for many years, but now I find myself creating artwork that is meaningful not only to me, but to those that share their love for art. Stepping away from life’s everyday activities and commitments has allowed me to engage my talent on a much deeper and meaningful level with myself, family, friends, and God. My drawings, therefore, come from solitude and quietness that I experience everyday which brings clarity, joy, and fulfillment. When you know God is leading you somewhere, even though it feels unknown, there is a sense of peace that you are where you are suppose to be. That is where I am now and I am grateful for the courage and strength He has given me. cb one y @ cb one y de signs .c om

The History of Our Collection

In early 2011, with the Terry Center scheduled to open in May of that year, the need for art came to the attention of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation (NCVMF) Board of Directors. The NCVMF is an advisory and advocacy group that attracts support for the NCState College of Veterinary Medicine. Because every penny that had been raised for the new medical center was needed to build and equip the hospital, there was no allocation in the budget for art. The Board received permission to assume the task of acquiring art for the building and quickly created an Art Committee to direct the project. The mission of the committee was to place in the hospital quality, animalthemed art that would compliment the building, enhance the experiences of both the clientele and the staff, and celebrate the animal-human bond. Every piece of art on the walls was given to the Foundation. Each piece was reviewed and approved by the Art Committee before inclusion in the collection. Some were submitted by the artists themselves, and others were offered by clients/ supporters of the CVM. A special group of paintings were donated by grateful artists whose own animals had been treated at the college. Two special projects have provided the Terry Center with unique displays. The Oncology Photo Project, a gallery of photographic portraits of cancer survivors, brings comfort and hope to all who see it. The other project, an arrangement of pet collages produced by third-grade students from Kinston, NC, brightens the hall with its uninhibited creativity and thoughtfulness. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the many artists and donors who have made this collection of art possible. Art donated after the publication of this catalogue in the autumn of 2013 may be seen at the Foundation’s website. For information on donating art or to discuss other ways to support the NCVMF, please contact: NCVMF, Inc. www.cvm.ncsu.edu/ncvmf 919-513-6660

No state funds were used in the creation of this catalogue.
